Vladimir Makanin a Russian prose writer, renowned for his portrayal of humans' urge for brutality in an impassionate, straightforward manner. He portrays human beings as pessimistic, inhabiting a world of darkness and confusion and belonging to deranged and brutalized crowd. He criticizes intelligentsia as being guilty, apathetic and isolated and representing apprehension and grief.

Two characteristics of Iurii Trifonov's recent work are the use of narrative reticence and stylistic methods used to convey an impression of time. Trifonov's use of temporal structures and how they affect his characters has been largely ignored by critics. Trifonov considers it essential to understand the time in which characters lived. Truth is established, compressed and corrupted by finite time, since each political era shapes the perception of truth. Trifonov uses space as a metaphor for finite time and its distortions, and he uses stylistic compression to reinforce the distortion.
