The E 1/2 potential associated with reduction of the linearly-functionalized 6,6'-biazulenic scaffold is accurately correlated to the combined σ p Hammett parameters of the substituents over >600 mV range. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the 2,2'-dichloro-substituted derivative revealed unexpectedly short C-Cl bond distances, along with other metric changes, suggesting a non-trivial cycloheptafulvalene-like structural contribution.

The preparation of halogenated benzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic diimide derivatives is challenging because of the possibility of competitive incorrect cyclizations and S N Ar reactivity. Here, we demonstrate that bypassing traditional cyclic anhydrides and instead directly reacting dihalobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acids with primary amines in acetic acid solvent successfully provides a range of desirable ortho -diimide products in good yields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that sterically challenging N -derivatizations can be readily achieved under microwave reactor conditions. The halogenated diimides described here are attractive building blocks for organic materials chemistry.

In this work, the encapsulation of [CdBr 6 ] 4- by six cations, [Co(dien) 2 ] 3+ has been described with the help of single crystal X-ray structural study in the complex, mer -[Co(dien) 2 ] 2 [CdBr 6 ]Br 2 . The complex anion, [CdBr 6 ] 4- has been obtained through solution method while attempting to synthesize complex dianion, [CdBr 4 ] 2- . This newly synthesized complex has been initially characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic studies (IR, NMR and UV-Visible). IR and NMR studies have been used for the isomeric identification of [Co(dien) 2 ] 3+ . Single crystal X-ray structure determination has revealed the presence of two complex cations, [Co(dien) 2 ] 3+ , one complex anion, [CdBr 6 ] 4- , and two Br - anions. The complex has crystallized in monoclinic crystal system with space group, P2 1 /n. N -benzyl-cinchonidinium bromide, C 26 H 29 N 2 O + ·Br - , with the systematic name ( R )-[(2 S ,4 S ,5 R )-1-benzyl-5-ethenyl-1-azoniabi-cyclo-[2.2.2]octan-2-yl](quinolin-4-yl)-methanol bromide, is a quaternary ammonium salt of the cinchona alkaloid cinchonidine. This salt is widely used as a chiral phase-transfer catalyst and chiral resolution agent. Both classical and non-classical hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, as well as anion effects have been shown to play key mechanistic roles in the catalysis of cinchona alkaloids. X-ray structural determinations and computational studies were used to investigate halogen interactions in two halogenated oxindoles. Comparative analyses of the interaction energy and the interaction properties were carried out for Br···Br, C-H···Br, C-H···O and N-H···O interactions. Employing Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT), the basis set superposition error (BSSE) corrected interaction energy (E int (BSSE)) was determined using a supramolecular approach. The E int (BSSE) results were compared with interaction energies obtained by Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM)-based methods. Reduced Density Gradient (RDG), QTAIM and Natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations provided insight into possible pathways for the intermolecular interactions examined. Comparative analysis employing the electron density at the bond critical points (BCP) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) showed that the interaction energies and the relative orientations of the monomers in the dimers may in part be understood in light of charge redistribution in these two compounds.

A metal/ligand cooperative approach to the reduction of small molecules by metal silylene complexes (R 2 Si=M) is demonstrated, whereby silicon activates the incoming substrate and mediates net two-electron transformations by one-electron redox processes at two metal centers. An appropriately tuned cationic pincer cobalt(I) complex, featuring a central silylene donor, reacts with CO 2 to afford a bimetallic siloxane, featuring two Co II centers, with liberation of CO; reaction of the silylene complex with ethylene yields a similar bimetallic product with an ethylene bridge. Experimental and computational studies suggest a plausible mechanism proceeding by [2+2] cycloaddition to the silylene complex, which is quite sensitive to the steric environment. The Co II /Co II products are reactive to oxidation and reduction. Reactions between 3,4-propylenedioxythiophenes (ProDOTs) and N -alkyl isatins under ambient conditions result in isomerically pure indophenine materials as confirmed by TLC and 1 H NMR analysis. The resulting low band gap materials exhibit favorable inter- and intramolecular interactions, high thermal stabilities, low energy electronic transitions, and amphoteric redox behavior.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of cyclometallated complexes of Pd(ii) incorporating the mixed donor ligand 1-oxa-4,7-dithiacyclononane ([9]aneS 2 O) are presented in this study. Complexes of the form [Pd(C^N)([9]aneS 2 O)](PF 6 ) (C^N = 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) 1b, 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppyCHO) 2b, 7,8-benzoquinoline (bzq) 3b, 2-benzothienylpyridine (btp) 4b, 2-phenylbenzothiazole (pbt) 5b), were obtained in high-yield from a simple two-step synthetic scheme. All of these complexes were fully characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, IR, combustion analyses, and most (1b, 2b, 4b, 5b) by X-ray crystallography. Solution 1 H and 13 C NMR studies of [Pd(C^N)([9]aneS 2 O)](PF 6 ) complexes demonstrate complicated [9]aneS 2 O behavior at room temperature. Variable temperature NMR reveals dynamic bonding of the [9]aneS 2 O ligand consistent with the presence of both endodentate and exodentate bonding modes. This is in stark contrast to the related [9]aneS 3 (1,4,7-trithiacyclononane) cogeners that demonstrate fluxional endodentate bonding only in solution. X-ray structures reveal only exodenate [9]aneS 2 O bonding in this series, unlike the related [9]aneS 3 complexes that show endodenate bonding with an axial PdS interaction. DFT calculations performed on endo and exo [9]aneS 2 O bonding forms of 4b, as well as a transition state calculation for interconversion, suggest reasonable access to both bonding forms based on the energy barrier. Natural bond order calculations provide further evidence for a weak axial PdO interaction in the endo form of 4b.

A new chloranilate compound with 1-(2-fluorophenyl)piperazine has been synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction. The atomic arrangement can be described by an H-bonded 3D network, formed by anionic entities, organic cations and H 2 O molecules linked together via NH…O, OH…Cl, CH…Cl and CH…O hydrogen bonds. The vibrational absorption bands of the various characteristic groups of this compound have been identified by infrared spectroscopy. Moreover, the thermal and dielectric analyses have shown that the title compound has a phase transition at 393 K. The surface mapped over the d norm property, highlights the A⋯H (AO, C, Cl and F) as the main intermolecular contacts. On the other hand, the geometry, intermolecular bonds and harmonic vibrational frequencies of the title molecule have been investigated using the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) method. The stability of the structure obtained, as well as the charge transfer within the molecule, have been confirmed by determining the energies of the HOMO and LUMO levels and the theoretical gap energy. In this work, we report the stabilization of the reduced states of pyromellitic diimide by charge-balancing the imide radical anions with cationic pyridinium groups attached to the aromatic core. This structural modification is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Characterization by (spectro)electrochemical experiments and computations reveal that the addition of cationic groups to an already electron-deficient ring system results in up to +0.57 V shifts in reduction potentials, largely as a consequence of charge screening and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowering effects. This formal charge-balancing approach to stabilizing the reduced states of electron-deficient pyromellitic diimides will facilitate their incorporation into spin-based optoelectronic materials and devices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

The title compound, C 6 H 4 BrNS, crystallizes in the space group P 2 1 / n with one complete mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The non-H atoms are nearly planar (r.m.s for non-H atoms = 0.071 Å), with the nitrile group oriented anti-periplanar with respect to the thio-phene S atom. Inter-molecular Type I centrosymmetric Br⋯Br halogen inter-actions are present at a distance of 3.582 (1) Å and with a C-Br⋯Br angle of 140.7 (1)°. Additional weaker C-H⋯N, C-H⋯S, and S⋯π inter-actions are also present. A Hirshfeld analysis indicates Br⋯Br inter-actions comprise only 1.9% of all the inter-atomic contacts.

A new series of π-conjugated oligomers based on the 4,4 dihexyl-4 H -cyclopenta[2,1- b :3,4- b ']dithiophene vinylene repeating unit has been prepared and characterized by X-ray, electrochemical, spectroscopic (UV-Vis absorption, emission and Raman) and density functional theory methods. The oligomers in their neutral, oxidized and reduced forms have been investigated. The neutral compounds show a longer mean conjugation length than oligothiophenes and oligothiophene-vinylenes and display very rich redox chemistry with the stabilization of polycationic states of which the radical cations and dications are strong NIR absorbers, the latter displaying singlet diradicaloid character. An interesting complementarity between the sequence of aromatic-quinoidal structural segments in the radical cations and dications has been described and interpreted. Two derivatives with the 4,4 dihexyl-4 H -cyclopenta[2,1- b :3,4- b ']dithiophene vinylene unit, disubstituted either with electron donor, bis(triaryl amino) groups, or acceptors bis(dicyano-methylene) caps enforcing a quinoidal structure in the dithiophene-vinylene bridge, have been also synthesized and characterized. The radical cation of the triarylamine compound and the radical anion of the tetracyano compound similarly display hole and electron charge localization, or confinement, in the nitrogen and dicyano surrounding parts, or class II mixed valence systems, while their dication and dianion species, conversely, are open-shell diradical ( i.e. , polaron pair) and closed-shell ( i.e. , bipolaron), respectively. The preparation of these new π-conjugated oligomers gives way to the realization of compounds with new electronic properties and unique structures potentially exploitable in organic electronics.

The synthesis and characterization of base-stabilized and base-free pincer-type bis(phosphine)/silylene [P 2 Si]Ru complexes are reported. The base-free complex readily reduces CO 2 and CS 2 via silylene-assisted hydride transfer, affording structurally distinct products with silicon-to-ruthenium formate and dithioformate bridges.

A bis(phosphine)/triflatosilyl pincer-type Rh(i) complex can reversibly store one equivalent of H2 across the Si-Rh bond upon triflate migration from silicon to rhodium. The triflatosilyl complex serves as an effective precatalyst for norbornene hydrogenation, but Si-OTf bond cleavage is not implicated in the major catalytic pathway. The combined findings suggest possible strategies for M/Si cooperation in catalytic processes.

The asymmetric units for the salts 4-(4-fluoro-phen-yl)-1-isopropyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium iodide, C11H13FN3 (+)·I(-), (1), 1-isopropyl-4-(4-methyl-phen-yl)-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium iodide, C12H16N3 (+)·I(-), (2), 1-isopropyl-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium iodide, C11H14N3 (+)·I(-), (3), and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium iodide, C9H10N3 (+)·I(-), (4), contain one cation and one iodide ion, whereas in 1-benzyl-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium bromide monohydrate, C15H14N3 (+)·Br(-)·H2O, (5), there is an additional single water mol-ecule. There is a predominant C-H⋯X(halide) inter-action for all salts, resulting in a two-dimensional extended sheet network between the triazolium cation and the halide ions. For salts with para-substitution on the aryl ring, there is an additional π-anion inter-action between a triazolium carbon and iodide displayed by the layers. For salts without the para-substitution on the aryl ring, the π-π inter-actions are between the triazolium and aryl rings. The melting points of these salts agree with the predicted substituent inductive effects.

We report the reactions of several heteroallenes (carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and phenyl isocyanate) and carbon monoxide with a three-coordinate, bis(phosphine)-supported Rh(I) disilylamide (1). Carbon disulfide reacts with 1 to afford a silyltrithiocarbonate complex similar to an intermediate previously invoked in the deoxygenation of CO2 by 1, and prolonged heating affords a structurally unusual μ-κ(2)(S,S'):κ(2)(S,S')-trithiocarbonate dimer. Carbonyl sulfide reacts with 1 to afford a structurally unique Rh(SCNCS) metallacycle derived from two insertions of OCS and N-to-O silyl-group migrations. Phenyl isocyanate reacts with 1 to afford a dimeric bis(phenylcyanamido)-bridged complex resulting from multiple silyl-group migrations and nitrogen-for-oxygen metathesis, akin to reactivity previously observed with carbon dioxide. The ability of 1 to activate carbon-chalcogen multiple bonds via silyl-group migration is further supported by its reactivity with carbon monoxide, where a nitrogen-for-oxygen metathesis is also observed with expulsion of hexamethyldisiloxane. For all reported reactions, intermediates are observable under appropriate conditions, allowing the formulation of mechanisms where insertion of the unsaturated substrate is followed by one or more silyl-group migrations to afford the observed products. This rich variety of reactivity confirms the ability of metal silylamides to activate exceptionally strong carbon-element multiple bonds and suggests that silylamides may be useful intermediates in nitrogen-atom and nitrene-group-transfer schemes.

A convenient synthetic scheme was developed to access a series of square-planar Pt(II) complexes of the form (TBA)[Pt(CN)3(CNR)] (TBA = tetra-n-butyl ammonium cation, R = CH3, c-C6H11, p-(C2H5)-C6H4). These heteroleptic complexes were characterized by combustion analyses, single-crystal X-ray structure determinations, HRFAB-MS, (1)H NMR, ATR-IR, solution UV-Vis, and solid-state emission spectroscopies. Surprisingly, each of these complexes exhibit low energy room temperature solid-state luminescence in the absence of intermolecular Pt-Pt interactions. Additionally, the polymorphic behavior of (TBA)[Pt(CN)3(CN-c-C6H11)] was elucidated through a combination of single-crystal X-ray structure determinations, X-ray powder diffraction, and mass uptake experiments. Vapoluminescence and polymorphic transformations of (TBA)[Pt(CN)3(CN-c-C6H11)] were concomitant with water vapor absorption. A new double-salt complex [Pt(terpy)Cl] [Pt(CN)3(CNCH3)] (terpy = 2,2',6',2''-terpyridine) was also synthesized and characterized by combustion analysis, ATR-IR, HRFAB-MS, and solid-state UV-Vis and emission spectroscopies. The vapoluminescent properties of this salt in response to water were examined by mass uptake experiments, ATR-IR, and solid-state emission spectroscopy. A principal component analysis (PCA) of the solid-state emission changes induced by water vapor confirmed the presence of an intermediate emissive species.

In the structures of the 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazoly-3-yl)methyl-substituted pyridine compound, C11H11N7, (I) and the iodide triiodide salt, C13H17N7 (2+)·I(-)·I3 (-), (II), the dihedral angles between the two triazole rings and the pyridine ring are 66.4 (1) and 74.6 (1)° in (I), and 68.4 (2)° in (II), in which the dication lies across a crystallographic mirror plane. The overall packing structure for (I) is two-dimensional with the layers lying parallel to the (001) plane. In (II), the triiodide anion lies within the mirror plane, occupying the space between the two triazole substituent groups and was found to have minor disorder [occupancy ratio 0.9761 (9):0.0239 (9)]. The overall packing of structure (II) can be described as two-dimensional with the layers stacking parallel to the (001) plane. In the crystal, the predominant inter-molecular inter-actions in (I) and (II) involve the acidic hydrogen atom in the third position of the triazole ring, with either the triazole N-atom acceptor in weak C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds in (I), or with halide counter-ions through C-H⋯I inter-actions, in (II).

The title compounds, C36H28OP2S2, (1), and C36H28OP2Se2, (2), exhibit remarkably similar structures although they are not isomorphous. The whole mol-ecule of compound (2) is generated by twofold symmetry, with the ether O atom located on the twofold axis. Both compounds have intra-molecular π-π inter-actions between terminal phenyl rings with centroid-centroid distances of 3.6214 (16) and 3.8027 (14) Å in (1) and (2), respectively. In the crystal of (1), short C-H⋯S hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules, forming chains along [001], while in (2) there are no analogous C-H⋯Se inter-actions present.

The crystal structure of the title salt, C8H12N(+)·C4H3O4 (-), consists of a 2,5-di-methyl-anilinium cation and an hydrogen maleate anion. In the anion, a strong intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond is observed, leading to an S(7) graph-set motif. In the crystal, the cations and anions pack in alternating layers parallel to (001). The ammonium group undergoes inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions with the O atoms of three different hydrogen maleate anions. This results in the formation of ribbons extending parallel to [010] with hydrogen-bonding motifs of the types R (4) 4(12) and R (4) 4(18).

Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophenes were oxidized under mild conditions with m-CPBA to yield the corresponding bis-sulfones (or tetraoxides). These sulfones possess red-shifted absorption and emission spectra relative to the parent molecules. Electrochemical analyses reveal that the benzodithiophene molecules are transformed from electron donors to electron acceptors.

The title compounds, [Mo(C5H5)(COCH3)P(CH3)2(C6H5)(CO)2], (1), and [Mo(C5H5)(COCH3)P(C2H5)(C6H5)2)(CO)2], (2), have been prepared by phosphine-induced migratory insertion from [Mo(C5H5)(CO)3(CH3)]. Both complex mol-ecules exhibit a four-legged piano-stool geometry with trans-disposed carbonyl ligands along with Mo-P bond lengths and C-Mo-P angles that reflect the relative steric pressure of the respective phosphine ligand. The structure of compound (1) exhibits a layered arrangement parallel to (100). Within the layers mol-ecules are linked into chains along [001] by non-classical C-H⋯O inter-actions between the acetyl ligand of one mol-ecule and the phenyl and methyl phosphine substituents of another. In the structure of complex (2), a chain motif of centrosymmetrical dimers is found along [010] through C-H⋯O inter-actions.

In the title compound, C13H10N2O4, the nitro groups are twisted significantly relative to the benzene rings [dihedral angles = 16.64 (18) and 28.02 (11)°]. The benzene groups are nearly perpendicular to each other [dihedral angle = 87.72 (6)°]. Short inter-molecular N⋯O and C⋯O [2.981 (2) and 3.060 (2) Å, respectively] contacts suggest possible weak π-inter-actions between nitro groups and between benzene and nitro groups. In addition, there are π-π inter-actions between one benzene group and an inversion-related equivalent [inter-planar separation = 3.494 (2) Å].

In the title complex, [Co(C6H15N2)Cl3], the Co(2+) ion is coordinated in a distorted tetra-hedral fashion by three chloride ions and one N atom of the piperazine ring; the ring adopts a chair conformation with the N-Co and N-CEt bonds in equatorial orientations. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected by N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, generating (10-1) sheets.

In the title mol-ecular salt, (C10H16N2)[CoCl4], the piperazine ring of the phenyl-piperazine dication adopts a chair conformation and the phenyl ring occupies an equatorial orientation. In the tetra-chlorido-cobaltate(II) dianion, the Co-Cl bond lengths for the chloride ions not accepting hydrogen bonds are significantly shorter than those for the chloride ions accepting such bonds. In the crystal, the components are linked by N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, generating [001] chains.

The title compound, [Mo(C5H5)(C2H3O)(C12H9O3P)(CO)2], was prepared by reaction of [Mo(C5H5)(CO)3(CH3)] with tris-(furan-2-yl)phosphane. The Mo(II) atom exhibits a four-legged piano-stool coordination geometry with the acetyl and phosphine ligands trans to each other. The O atom of the acetyl ligand points down, away from the Cp ring. In the crystal, mol-ecules form centrosymmetrical dimers via π-π inter-actions between furyl rings [the centroid-centroid distance is 3.396 (4) Å]. The dimers are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into layers parallel to (100).

The title compound, [Mo(C(5)H(5))(C(2)H(3)O)(C(13)H(13)P)(CO)(2)], was prepared by reaction of [Mo(CH(3))(C(5)H(5))(CO)(3)] with methyl-diphenyl-phosphane. The Mo(II) atom exhibits a four-legged piano-stool coordination geometry with the acetyl and phosphane ligands trans to each other. There are several inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions involving carbonyl and acetyl O atoms as acceptors. A close nearly parallel π-π inter-action between the cyclo-penta-dienyl plane and the phenyl ring of the phosphane ligand is present, with an angle of 6.4 (1)° between the two least-squares planes. The centroid-to-centroid distance between these groups is 3.772 (3) Å, and the closest distance between two atoms of these groups is 3.449 (4) Å. Since each Mo complex is engaged in two of these inter-actions, the complexes form an infinite π-stack coincident with the a axis.

In the title compound, (C(16)H(36)N)(2)[Pd(C(4)N(2)S(2))(2)], the Pd(II) center adopts a distorted square-planar geometry due to the four-membered chelate rings formed by coordination of the 2,2-dicyano-ethyl-ene-1,1-dithiol-ate (i-mnt) ligands [bite angle 75.0159 (17)°]. The bond distances in the coordinated i-mnt ligands indicate some delocalization of the π-system.

In the title compound, (C(16)H(36)N)(2)[Pt(C(4)N(2)S(2))(2)], the Pt(II) center adopts a distorted square-planar geometry due to the 4-membered chelate rings formed by coordination to the S atoms of the 1,1-dicyano-ethyl-ene-2,2-dithiol-ate (i-mnt) ligands [bite angle 74.35 (4)°]. The bond distances in the coordinated i-mnt ligands indicate some delocalization of the π-system.

We report the synthesis and full characterization for a series of cyclometallated complexes of Pt(II) and Pd(II) incorporating the fluxional trithiacrown ligand 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane ([9]aneS3). Reaction of [M(C insertion mark N)(micro-Cl)]2 (M = Pt(II), Pd(II); C insertion mark N = 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) or 7,8-benzoquinolinate (bzq)) with [9]aneS3 followed by metathesis with NH4PF6 yields [M(C insertion mark N)([9]aneS3)](PF6). The complexes [M(C insertion mark P)([9]aneS3)](PF6) (M = Pt(II), Pd(II); Cinsertion markP = [CH2C6H4P(o-tolyl)2-C,P]-) were synthesized from their respective [Pt(C insertion mark P)(micro-Cl)]2 or [Pd(C insertion mark P)(micro-O2CCH3)]2 (C insertion mark P) starting materials. All five new complexes have been fully characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies in addition to elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal structural determinations. As expected, the coordinated [9]aneS3 ligand shows fluxional behavior in its NMR spectra, resulting in a single 13C NMR resonance despite the asymmetric coordination environment of the cyclometallating ligand. Electrochemical studies reveal irreversible one-electron metal-centered oxidations for all Pt(II) complexes, but unusual two-electron reversible oxidations for the Pd(II) complexes of ppy and bzq. The X-ray crystal structures of each complex indicate an axial M-S interaction formed by the endodentate conformation of the [9]aneS3 ligand. The structure of [Pd(bzq)([9]aneS3)](PF6) exhibits disorder in the [9]aneS3 conformation indicating a rare exodentate conformation as the major contributor in the solid-state structure. DFT calculations on [Pt([9]aneS3)(ppy)](PF6) and [Pd([9]aneS3)(ppy)](PF6) indicate the HOMO for both complexes is primarily dz2 in character with a significant contribution from the phenyl ring of the ppy ligand and p orbital of the axial sulfur donor. In contrast, the calculated LUMO is primarily ppy pi* in character for [Pt([9]aneS3)(ppy)](PF6), but dx2-y2 in character for [Pd([9]aneS3)(ppy)](PF6).

A crystal structure showing an unusual trinuclear Cd(II) cluster bridged in mu3 fashion by a carbonate ligand is reported. The carbonate ion is formed by fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide from the corresponding cadmium mononuclear complex containing an aza crown ether.

Oligothiophene sulfones of up to six rings can be conveniently prepared by the direct oxidation of butyl-substituted thiophene oligomers with m-CPBA in dichloromethane. Reverse selectivity of oxidized rings is observed relative to previously reported systems without beta-substitution. The selectivity in the trimer and hexamer is confirmed with single-crystal X-ray structure data. The sulfones possess red-shifted absorptions and increased electron affinities relative to the parent oligomers.

A Pt(II) molecular square containing four fluxional trithiacrown ligands at the corners is prepared by transition metal-mediated self-assembly.

We analyze the electronic and molecular structures for the ground and excited electronic states of aromatic terthiophene (3T), the quinodimethane 3',4'-dibutyl-5,5' '-bis(dicyanomethylene)-5,5' '-dihydro-2,2':5',2' '-terthiophene (3Q), and isologues with the middle ring S-oxidized (3TO2, 3QO2). These represent extremes of electron rich and deficient ground states, often exhibiting complementary properties. Oxidizing the central sulfur atom affects the molecular structure, electron affinity, and photophysical properties of both pi systems. The consequences for 3T include de-aromatization of the central thiophene, red-shifting of the electronic absorption spectrum, and lowering of the reduction potential. The electron deficient quinoid 3QO2 shows an enhancement of electron affinity from reducing the electron-donor ability of sulfur, and a blue-shifting of its electronic absorption spectrum was seen. Fluorescence emission is quenched in the sulfonated terthiophene, and the contrary effect again would be expected upon sulfonation of a quinoid emitter. Raman vibrational spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies are analyzed in conjunction with theoretical calculations.

A series of tricyanovinyl (TCV)-substituted oligothiophenes was synthesized and investigated with a number of physical methods including UV/Vis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements, X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry. Mono- or disubstituted oligomers were prepared by the reaction of tetracyanoethylene with mono- or dilithiated oligomers. The comparative effects of the symmetric and asymmetric substitutions in the electronic and molecular properties have been addressed. These oligomers display dramatic reductions in both their optical and electrochemical band gaps in comparison with unsubstituted molecules. The analysis of the electronic properties of the molecules was assisted by density functional theory calculations, which are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. TCV substitution influences the energies of the frontier orbitals, especially with respect to the stabilization of LUMO orbitals. X-ray structural characterization of a monosubstituted oligomer exhibits pi-stacking with favorable intermolecular interactions. NLO results agree with the role of the intramolecular charge-transfer feature in the asymmetric samples. These results furthermore exalt the role of conformational flexibility in the disubstituted compounds and reveal an unexpected nonlinear optical activity for symmetric molecules. Regarding the electronic structure, the interpretation of the vibrational data reflects the balanced interplay between aromatic and quinoid forms, finely tuned by the chain length and substitution pattern. The electronic and structural properties are consistent with the semiconducting properties exhibited by these materials in thin film transistors (TFTs).

A unique trinuclear cluster containing two short Pt-->Ag dative bonds was prepared and characterized crystallographically. Two monocationic orthometalated Pt(II) complexes containing 2-phenylpyridine and the tridentate ligand 9S3 (1,4,7-trithiacyclononane) exhibit axial sulfur interactions with Pt as well as short dative bonds. The Pt-->Ag dative bonding results in a dramatic shortening of the axial Pt-S distance in each Pt complex cation, relative to the mononuclear Pt complex. Evidence for Pt-Ag interactions in solution is also presented.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(8)H(18)N(2)(2+).2I(-).CH(3)CN, the dication lies on a mirror plane containing the molecular dication threefold axis. The structure displays C-H...I interactions between H atoms of the 1,4-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane dication and the iodide anions. The H...I distances are in the range 2.96-3.18 (4) A. The dications pack forming channels along the b axis, which contain the iodide anions and acetonitrile solvent molecules.

A series of new quinodimethane-substituted terthiophene and quaterthiophene oligomers has been investigated for comparison with a previously studied quinoid oligothiophene that has demonstrated high mobilities and ambipolar transport behavior in thin-film transistor devices. Each new quinoidal thiophene derivative shows a reversible one-electron oxidation between 0.85 and 1.32 V, a quasi-reversible one-electron second oxidation between 1.37 and 1.96 V, and a reversible two-electron reduction between -0.05 and -0.23 V. The solution UV-vis-NIR spectrum of each compound is dominated by an intense (epsilon congruent with 100 000 M(-1) cm(-1)) low energy pi-pi transition that has a lambda(max) ranging between 648 and 790 nm. All X-ray crystal structures exhibit very planar quinoidal backbones and short intermolecular pi-stacking distances (3.335-3.492 A). Structures exhibit a single pi-stacking distance with parallel cofacial stacking (sulfur atoms of equivalent rings pointed in the same direction) or with alternating distances and antiparallel cofacial stacking (sulfur atoms of equivalent rings pointed in the opposite direction). Examples of the layered and herringbone-packing motifs are observed for both the parallel and the antiparallel cofacial stacking. Analysis of the X-ray structures and molecular orbital calculations indicates that all of these compounds have one-dimensional electronic band structures as a result of the pi-stacking. For structures with a unique pi-stacking distance, a simple geometric overlap parameter calculated from the shape of the molecule and the slip from perfect registry in the pi-stack correlates well with the transfer integrals (t) calculated using molecular orbital theory. The calculated valence (633 meV) and conduction (834 meV) bandwidths for a quinoid quaterthiophene structure are similar to those calculated for the benchmark pentacene and indicate that both hole and electron mobilities could be significant.

The crystal structure of the title compound, C6H16N+.C24H20B-.CH2Cl2, displays an N-H...pi interaction between the triethylammonium cation and a phenyl ring of the tetraphenylborate anion. The distance between the ammonium H atom and the edge of this phenyl ring is 2.40 (3) A. The ammonium group and the aryl moiety are nearly perpendicular, forming an intramolecular dihedral angle of 90.4 degrees. A C-H...pi interaction between the disordered dichloromethane solvate molecule and a phenyl ring of the tetraphenylborate anion is also present.

Tricyanovinyl-capped oligothiophenes of up to six rings have been synthesized and characterized. The substituted oligomers display dramatic reductions in both their optical and electrochemical band gaps in comparison to unsubstituted oligomers. The solvatochromic behavior of the terthiophene-substituted molecule was investigated in a variety of solvents. The reaction of the [Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(4)](2-) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) ion in aqueous solutions produces two different nitrosyl complexes, depending on the pH of the solution. At acidic pH, complex cis,cis-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(ONO)(NO) was isolated. At neutral or basic pH, [Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(4)](2-) reacts to give cis,trans-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(NO)(OH). Both new complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis and UV-vis, IR, (1)H NMR, and (15)N NMR spectroscopy. A single-crystal X-ray structure of cis,trans-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(NO)(OH) was also obtained. cis,cis-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(ONO)(NO) isomerizes in acetone or water solution to give a mixture of the trans,cis-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(ONO)(NO) and cis,cis-Ru(bpy)(ONO)(2)(NO(2))(NO) linkage isomers as determined by (1)H and (15)N NMR spectroscopy. A single-crystal X-ray structure of a solid solution of cis,cis-Ru(bpy)(ONO)(2)(NO(2))(NO)/trans,cis-Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(2)(ONO)(NO) was also obtained. This pair of isomers is the first crystallographically characterized compound with nitro, nitrito, and nitrosyl ligands. The kinetic studies of the Ru-NO(2) --> Ru-NO conversion reactions of [Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(4)](2)(-) in buffered solutions from pH 3 to pH 9 complement previous studies of the reverse reaction. The reactions are first order in [Ru(bpy)(NO(2))(4)](2-). At high pH, the reaction is independent of the concentration of H(+) while, at low pH, the reaction is first order in the concentration of H(+). The rate determining step of the high pH reaction involves breakage of the Ru-NO(2) bond while, at low pH, the mechanism involves a rapid reversible protonation of a NO(2) ligand followed by the rate determining loss of hydroxide to produce a nitrosyl ligand.

A three-channel cross-reactive sensor array based on vapoluminescent platinum(II) double salt materials has been characterized. Two arrays were studied, one consisting of [Pt(CN-cyclododecyl)4][Pt(CN)4] (1), [(phen)Pt(CN-cyclohexyl)2][Pt(CN)4] (2), and [Pt(CN-n-tetradecyl)4][Pt-(CN)4] (3) materials, where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and a second array that has compound 3 replaced by the mixed double salt material [(phen)Pt(CN-cyclododecyl)Cl)]2[(phen)Pt(CN-cyclododecyl)2]2[Pt(CN)4]3 (4). Compounds 2, 3 and 4 are characterized here for the first time. Inclusion of solvent vapors into these materials often leads to dramatic shifts in their solid-state absorption and luminescence spectra. In these studies the arrays were exposed to a set of 10 test solvent vapors to determine the ability of each cross-reactive array to give reproducible vapoluminescent spectra characteristic of each solvent vapor. It was discovered that temperature programming between solvent vapor exposures greatly improved the reproducibility of the luminescence spectra obtained. A statistical analysis of three-dimensional resolution factors between pairs of solvent clusters in principal component space supported this assertion. The success of the temperature programming protocol was limited by the thermal stability and the sensitivity to low background water vapor levels of some platinum(II) double salt materials. The ability of the cross-reactive sensor array to differentiate between two different solvent vapors over a large concentration range was also investigated. Acetone and methanol were found to occupy two distinct regions of the three-dimensional principal component space. Detection limits for acetone and methanol were estimated from the principal component analysis as 75 and 6 g/m3, respectively.
