Introduction: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with radial acquisition regime (RADAR; RADAR-DWI) is a fast spin echo (FSE)-based DWI imaging technique that is known to be robust to magnetic susceptibility artifacts and distortions as compared with echo planar imaging DWI (EPI-DWI). Several reports have suggested that the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values obtained with FSE-based DWI are different from those obtained with EPI-DWI. The purpose of this study was to create phantoms that mimic the T 2 and ADC values of various tissues and to demonstrate the ADC values obtained with RADAR-DWI and EPI-DWI in low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems., Methods: Several phantoms were created using sucrose and manganese (II) chloride tetrahydrate mimicking various tissues. RADAR-DWI and EPI-DWI were used to scan the phantoms, and the obtained ADC values were compared., Results: The ADC values obtained with RADAR-DWI were significantly higher than those obtained with EPI-DWI for all phantoms (P < 0.05). The ADC values obtained by RADAR-DWI ranged from 0.70 ± 0.01 to 1.21 ± 0.02 ( × 10 -3 mm 2 s -1 ). Considering the prevalence of ever-changing conditions in the natural world, investigation of photosynthetic responses in C 4 plants under fluctuating light is needed. Here, we studied the effect of dynamic illumination on photosynthesis in totally 10 C 3 , C 3 -C 4 intermediate, C 4 -like and C 4 dicots and monocots at CO 2 concentrations of 400 and 800 μmol mol -1 . C 4 and C 4 -like plants had faster photosynthetic induction and light-induced stomatal dynamics than C 3 plants at 400 μmol mol -1 , but not at 800 μmol mol -1 CO 2 , at which the CO 2 supply rarely limits photosynthesis. C 4 and C 4 -like plants had a higher water use efficiency than C 3 plants at both CO 2 concentrations. There were positive correlations between photosynthetic induction and light-induced stomatal response, together with CO 2 compensation point, which was a parameter of the CO 2 -concentrating mechanism of C 4 photosynthesis. These results clearly show that C 4 photosynthesis in both monocots and dicots adapts to fluctuating light conditions more efficiently than C 3 photosynthesis. Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the most common disease among patients requiring dialysis for the first time in Japan. Multidisciplinary care (MDC) may prevent the progression of kidney failure. However, the effectiveness and timing of MDC to preserve kidney function in patients with DKD is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether MDC for patients with DKD affects the preservation of kidney function as well as the timing of MDC in clinical practice., Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we identified patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and DKD from April 2012 to January 2020 using a nationwide Japanese healthcare record database. The fee code for medical guidance to prevent dialysis in patients with diabetes was used to distinguish between the MDC and non-MDC groups. The primary outcome was a 40% decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate, and secondary outcomes were death, hospitalization, permanent dialysis, kidney failure with replacement therapy, and emergency temporary catheterization. Propensity score matching was performed, and Kaplan-Meier and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed., Results: Overall, 9,804 eligible patients met the inclusion criteria, of whom 5,614 were matched for the main analysis: 1,039 in the MDC group, and 4,575 in the non-MDC group. The primary outcome did not differ between the groups (hazard ratio: 1.18, [95% confidence interval: 0.99-1.41], P = 0.07). The groups also did not differ in terms of the secondary outcomes. Most patients with DKD received their first MDC guidance within 1 month of diagnosis, but most received guidance only once per year., Conclusions: Although we could not demonstrate the effectiveness of MDC on kidney function in patients with DKD, we clarified the characteristics of such patients assigned the fee code for medical guidance to prevent dialysis related to diabetes., (© 2024. Background: In real-world clinical practice, treatments selected for patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) without kidney replacement therapy (KRT) have not been reported. This study investigated the oral treatments used in these patients and the changes in their use in recent years. Additionally, we studied the factors affecting tolvaptan dose reduction or discontinuation., Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the medical records of 160 hospitals in Japan. Patients with ADPKD or polycystic kidney disease registered on the database between January 2014 and December 2020 were selected. Changes in prescription proportions over time were assessed using the Cochran-Armitage test. We focused on patients prescribed with >15 mg of tolvaptan daily to identify the factors related to its dose reduction or discontinuation and used Multivariate Cox regression analysis to evaluate them., Results: Tolvaptan use in patients with ADPKD in the CKD without KRT stage has increased. As of 2020, 25% of patients were treated with tolvaptan. Overall, 3639 patients with ADPKD were enrolled in the database, of whom 156 were treated with tolvaptan. Of these, 64 patients (41%) reduced or discontinued tolvaptan during the observation period. The presence of an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 at the beginning of the treatment was associated with a higher risk of tolvaptan dose reduction or discontinuation., Conclusion: The proportion of patients with ADPKD treated with high-dose tolvaptan is increasing. Introduction: The double inversion recovery (DIR) technique suppresses two types of tissue signals with different T1 values by applying two inversion recovery (IR) pulses with different inversion times (TI). In contrast, the double tissue suppression with multi-echo acquisition and single TI combining HIRE (DOMUST-HIRE) method, is a technique enabling the white-matter-attenuated inversion recovery (WAIR) images by setting one inversion time (TI) in a sequence based on the multi-echo method and subtracting the second echo image from the first echo image. Here, we propose a new sequence that can provide the gray-matter-attenuated inversion recovery image based on the DOMUST-HIRE method., Methods: In this small clinical study, we performed determination of optimal TI and physical evaluation by imaging a subject's head with T1WI and our proposed method for GAIR images., Results: Our proposed method could increase the contrast ratio and the contrast-to-noise ratio between white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM), whereas the signal-to-noise ratio WM and GM decreased than with T1WI method., Conclusions: Our proposed method can be used to suppress GM and CSF signals., Implications for Practice: The use of our proposed method in low-field MRI systems could provide GAIR image., (Copyright © 2023 The College of Radiographers. Excessive hip flexion torque to prioritize leg swings in the elderly is likely to be a factor that reduces their propulsive force and gait stability, but the mechanism is not clear. To understand the mechanism, we investigated how propulsive force, hip flexion torque, and margin of stability (MoS) change when only the hip spring stiffness is increased without changing the walking speed in the simple walking model, and verified whether the relationship holds in human walking. The results showed that at walking speeds between 0.50 and 1.75 m/s, increasing hip spring stiffness increased hip flexion torque and decreased the propulsive force and MoS in both the model and human walking. Furthermore, it was found that the increase in hip flexion torque was explained by the increase in spring stiffness, and the decreases in the propulsive force and MoS were explained by the increase in step frequency associated with the increase in spring stiffness. Therefore, the increase in hip flexion torque likely decreased the propulsive force and MoS, and this mechanism was explained by the intervening hip spring stiffness. Introduction: The fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) method is one of the most important magnetic resonance imaging techniques for the brain, and the high-intensity reduction (HIRE) method is an imaging technique to obtain cerebrospinal fluid suppression images by subtracting long echo time images from short echo time images. In contrast, the double inversion recovery technique suppresses 2 types of tissue signals with different T1 values by applying 2 inversion recovery pulses with different inversion times. However, the double inversion recovery method requires the setting of 2 inversion times in a sequence; thus, its use is limited to relatively high-specification equipment. Introduction: Fat-suppressed images are essential in clinical practice but are often affected by magnetic field inhomogeneity, resulting in poor image quality. We hypothesized that salt (99% sodium chloride [NaCl]) could be used as a magnetic field uniformity assist pad and verified whether salt pads improve magnetic field uniformity and the fat suppression effect in low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems., Methods: We conducted a small clinical study where coronal 2D fast spin-echo T2-weighted MRI with fat suppression was performed. The subjects were 10 healthy volunteers (six men and four women) with no surgical history, with a mean age of 20.5 years (range, 20-30 years). Under field environments, fluctuating light conditions induce dynamic photosynthesis, which affects carbon gain by crop plants. Elucidating the natural genetic variations among untapped germplasm resources and their underlying mechanisms can provide an effective strategy to improve dynamic photosynthesis and, ultimately, improve crop yields through molecular breeding approaches. In this review, we first overview two processes affecting dynamic photosynthesis, namely (i) biochemical processes associated with CO2 fixation and photoprotection and (ii) gas diffusion processes from the atmosphere to the chloroplast stroma. Next, we review the intra- and interspecific variations in dynamic photosynthesis in relation to each of these two processes. It is suggested that plant adaptations to different hydrological environments underlie natural genetic variation explained by gas diffusion through stomata. This emphasizes the importance of the coordination of photosynthetic and stomatal dynamics to optimize the balance between carbon gain and water use efficiency under field environments. Finally, we discuss future challenges in improving dynamic photosynthesis by utilizing natural genetic variation. The forward genetic approach supported by high-throughput phenotyping should be introduced to evaluate the effects of genetic and environmental factors and their interactions on the natural variation in dynamic photosynthesis., (© The Author(s) 2022. In this study, we developed a photonic band microscope based on hyperspectral Fourier image spectroscopy. The developed device constructs an infrared photonic band structure from Fourier images for various wavelength obtained by hyperspectral imaging, which make it possible to speedily measure the dispersion characteristics of photonic nanostructures. By applying the developed device to typical photonic crystals and topological photonic crystals, we succeeded in obtaining band structures in good agreement with the theoretical prediction calculated by the finite element method. This device facilitates the evaluation of physical properties in various photonic nanostructures, and is expected to further promote related fields.

The proton concentration gradient (ΔpH) and membrane potential (Δψ) formed across the thylakoid membrane contribute to ATP synthesis in chloroplasts. Additionally, ΔpH downregulates photosynthetic electron transport via the acidification of the thylakoid lumen. K+ exchange antiporter 3 (KEA3) relaxes this downregulation by substituting ΔpH with Δψ in response to fluctuation of light intensity. In the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) line overexpressing KEA3 (KEA3ox), the rate of electron transport is elevated by accelerating the relaxation of ΔpH after a shift from high light (HL) to low light. However, the plant cannot control electron transport toward photosystem I (PSI), resulting in PSI photodamage. In this study, we crossed the KEA3ox line with the line (Flavodiiron [Flv]) expressing the Flv proteins of Physcomitrium patens. In the double transgenic line (Flv-KEA3ox), electrons overloading toward PSI were pumped out by Flv proteins. Consequently, photodamage of PSI was alleviated to the wild-type level. The rate of CO2 fixation was enhanced in Flv and Flv-KEA3ox lines during HL periods of fluctuating light, although CO2 fixation was unaffected in any transgenic lines in constant HL. Upregulation of CO2 fixation was accompanied by elevated stomatal conductance in fluctuating light. Consistent with the results of gas exchange experiments, the growth of Flv and Flv-KEA3ox plants was better than that of WT and KEA3ox plants under fluctuating light., (© American Society of Plant Biologists 2022. Photosynthesis occurs mainly in plant leaves and is a fundamental process in the global carbon cycle and in crop production. The exploitation of natural genetic variation in leaf photosynthetic capacity is a promising strategy to meet the increasing demand for crops. The present study reports the newly developed photosynthesis measurement system 'MIC-100,' with a higher throughput for measuring instantaneous photosynthetic rate in the field. MIC-100 is established based on the closed system and directly detects the CO2 absorption in the leaf chamber. The reproducibility, accuracy, and measurement throughput of MIC-100 were tested using soybean (Glycine max L. (Merr.)) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown under field conditions. In most cases, the coefficient of variance (CV) for repeated-measurements of the same leaf was less than 0.1. The photosynthetic rates measured with the MIC-100 model showed a significant correlation (R2 = 0.93-0.95) with rates measured by a widely used gas-exchange system. The measurement throughput of the MIC-100 is significantly greater than that of conventional open gas-exchange systems under field conditions. Although MIC-100 solely detects the instantaneous photosynthetic rate under a given environment, this study demonstrated that the MIC-100 enables the rough evaluation of leaf photosynthesis within the large-scale plant populations grown in the field.

The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of carbonyl oxygen in esters using H 2 is an attractive method for synthesizing unsymmetrical ethers because water is theoretically the sole coproduct. Herein, we report a heterogeneous catalytic system for the selective HDO of esters to unsymmetrical ethers over a zirconium oxide-supported platinum-molybdenum catalyst (Pt-Mo/ZrO 2 ). A wide range of esters were transformed into the corresponding unsymmetrical ethers under mild reaction conditions (0.5 MPa H 2 at 100 °C). The Pt-Mo/ZrO 2 catalyst was also successfully applied to the conversion of a biomass-derived triglyceride into the corresponding triether. Physicochemical characterization and control experiments revealed that cooperative catalysis between Pt nanoparticles and neighboring molybdenum oxide species on the ZrO 2 surface plays a key role in the highly selective HDO of esters. Drought stress is a major limiting factor for crop growth and yield. Water availability in the field can cyclically change between drought and rewatering conditions, depending on precipitation patterns. Concurrently, light intensity under field conditions can fluctuate, inducing dynamic photosynthesis and transpiration during the crop growth period. The present study aimed to characterize carbon gain and water use in fluctuating light under drought and rewatering conditions in two major crops, namely rice and soybean. We conducted gas exchange measurements under fluctuating light conditions with rice and soybean plants exposed to drought treatment (9-13 days) imposed by withholding water and subsequent rewatering treatment (8-9 days). Drought stress significantly reduced the maximum CO 2 assimilation rate (A) in soybean but not in rice. Under drought conditions, A increased after a step increase in light and then gradually decreased in both crops, resulting in the significant reduction of steady-state A in rice and soybean. Moreover, drought stress delayed photosynthetic induction in both crops even when it had relatively small impact on maximum A. These results suggest that the drought effects on photosynthesis should be evaluated based on induction, maximum, and steady states. The delayed photosynthetic induction under drought owing to the reduced gas diffusional conductance via stomata resulted in a substantial loss of leaf carbon gain under fluctuating light conditions. Meanwhile, rewatering, after drought, completely recovered photosynthesis under fluctuating light in both crops. Global warming threatens food security by decreasing crop yields through damage to photosynthetic systems, especially Rubisco activation. We examined whether co-overexpression of Rubisco and Rubisco activase improves the photosynthetic and growth performance of rice under high temperatures. We grew three rice lines-the wild-type (WT), a Rubisco activase-overexpressing line (oxRCA) and a Rubisco- and Rubisco activase-co-overexpressing line (oxRCA-RBCS)-and analysed photosynthesis and biomass at 25 and 40°C. Compared with the WT, the Rubisco activase content was 153% higher in oxRCA and 138% higher in oxRCA-RBCS, and the Rubisco content was 27% lower in oxRCA and similar in oxRCA-RBCS. The CO 2 assimilation rate (A) of WT was lower at 40°C than at 25°C, attributable to Rubisco deactivation by heat. On the other hand, that of oxRCA and oxRCA-RBCS was maintained at 40°C, resulting in higher A than WT. Notably, the dry weight of oxRCA-RBCS was 26% higher than that of WT at 40°C. We measured angle-resolved reflection spectra of triangular-lattice photonic crystal slabs fabricated in a silicon-on-insulator wafer in the mid-infrared region. We achieved a high angle-resolution measurement by means of our homemade optical setup integrated in the sample chamber of an FT-IR spectrometer. By examining the reflection peak frequency as a function of the lateral component of the wave vector of the incident light and applying the selection rules expected from the spatial symmetry of electromagnetic eigenmodes in C 6v -symmetric structures, we successfully obtained the dispersion relation and the mode symmetry of the photonic crystal slabs, which agreed well with numerical calculations by the finite element method. We also found the redistribution of diffraction loss between A 1 - and E 1 -symmetric modes, which was caused by the Dirac-cone formation due to their effective degeneracy.

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is considered to be one of the major environmental factors influencing stomatal functions and photosynthesis, as well as plant growth in crop and horticultural plants. In the greenhouse cultivation, air temperature and relative air humidity are regulated by switching on/off the evaporative systems and opening/closing the roof windows, which causes VPD fluctuation. However, it remains unclear how VPD fluctuation affects photosynthetic and growth performance in plants. Here, we examined the effects of the VPD fluctuation on the photosynthetic and growth characteristics in lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.). The parameters for gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence and biomass production were evaluated under the conditions of drastic (1.63 kPa for 6 min and 0.63 for 3 min) or moderate (1.32 kPa for 7 min and 0.86 kPa for 3 min) VPD fluctuation. The drastic VPD fluctuation induced gradual decrease in stomatal conductance and thus CO 2 assimilation rate during the measurements, while moderate VPD fluctuation caused no reduction of these parameters. Furthermore, data showed moderate VPD fluctuation maintained leaf expansion and the efficiency of CO 2 diffusion across leaf surface, resulting in enhanced plant growth compared with drastic VPD fluctuation. Taken together, fine regulation of VPD can be crucial for better plant growth by maintaining the photosynthetic performance in lettuce. Fourier transform (FT) spectroscopy is a versatile technique for studying the infrared (IR) optical response of solid-, liquid-, and gas-phase samples. In standard Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers, a light beam passing through a Michelson interferometer is focused onto a sample with condenser optics. This design enables us to examine relatively small samples, but the large solid angle of the focused infrared beam makes it difficult to analyze angle-dependent characteristics. Here, we design and construct a high-precision angle-resolved reflection setup compatible with a commercial FT-IR spectrometer. Our setup converts the focused beam into an achromatically collimated beam with an angle dispersion as high as 0.25°. The setup also permits us to scan the incident angle over ∼8° across zero (normal incidence). The beam diameter can be reduced to ∼1 mm, which is limited by the sensitivity of an HgCdTe detector. The small-footprint apparatus is easily installed in an FT-IR sample compartment. As a demonstration of the capability of our reflection setup, we measure the angle-dependent mid-infrared reflectance of two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs and determine the in-plane dispersion relation in the vicinity of the Γ point in momentum space. We observe the formation of photonic Dirac cones, i.e., linear dispersions with an accidental degeneracy at Γ, in an ideally designed sample. Our apparatus is useful for characterizing various systems that have a strong in-plane anisotropy, including photonic crystal waveguides, plasmonic metasurfaces, and molecular crystalline films.

The dynamics of leaf photosynthesis in fluctuating light affects carbon gain by plants. Mesophyll conductance (gm) limits CO2 assimilation rate (A) under the steady state, but the extent of this limitation under non-steady-state conditions is unknown. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the dynamics of gm and the limitations to A imposed by gas diffusional and biochemical processes under fluctuating light. The induction responses of A, stomatal conductance (gs), gm, and the maximum rate of RuBP carboxylation (Vcmax) or electron transport (J) were investigated in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.)) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). We first characterized gm induction after a change from darkness to light. Each limitation to A imposed by gm, gs and Vcmax or J was significant during induction, indicating that gas diffusional and biochemical processes limit photosynthesis. Initially, gs imposed the greatest limitation to A, showing the slowest response under high light after long and short periods of darkness, assuming RuBP-carboxylation limitation. However, if RuBP-regeneration limitation was assumed, then J imposed the greatest limitation. gm did not vary much following short interruptions to light. The limitation to A imposed by gm was the smallest of all the limitations for most of the induction phase. This suggests that altering induction kinetics of mesophyll conductance would have little impact on A following a change in light. To enhance the carbon gain by plants under naturally dynamic light environments, attention should therefore be focused on faster stomatal opening or activation of electron transport., (© American Society of Plant Biologists 2020. We provide an extensive and systematic investigation of exciton dynamics in droplet epitaxial quantum dots comparing the cases of (311)A, (001), and (111)A surfaces. Despite a similar s-shell exciton structure common to the three cases, the absence of a wetting layer for (311)A and (111)A samples leads to a larger carrier confinement compared to (001), where a wetting layer is present. This leads to a more pronounced dependence of the binding energies of s-shell excitons on the quantum dot size and to the strong anti-binding character of the positive-charged exciton for smaller quantum dots. In-plane geometrical anisotropies of (311)A and (001) quantum dots lead to a large electron-hole fine interaction (fine structure splitting (FSS) ∼100 μeV), whereas for the three-fold symmetric (111)A counterpart, this figure of merit is reduced by about one order of magnitude. In all these cases, we do not observe any size dependence of the fine structure splitting. Heavy-hole/light-hole mixing is present in all the studied cases, leading to a broad spread of linear polarization anisotropy (from 0 up to about 50%) irrespective of surface orientation (symmetry of the confinement), fine structure splitting, and nanostructure size. These results are important for the further development of ideal single and entangled photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots.

Stomatal density ( SD ) is closely associated with photosynthetic and growth characteristics in plants. In the field, light intensity can fluctuate drastically within a day. The objective of the present study is to examine how higher SD affects stomatal conductance ( g s ) and CO 2 assimilation rate ( A ) dynamics, biomass production and water use under fluctuating light. Here, we compared the photosynthetic and growth characteristics under constant and fluctuating light among three lines of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.): the wild type (WT), STOMAGEN/EPFL9 -overexpressing line (ST-OX), and EPIDERMAL PATTERNING FACTOR 1 knockout line ( epf1 ). ST-OX and epf1 showed 268.1 and 46.5% higher SD than WT ( p < 0.05). Guard cell length of ST-OX was 10.0% lower than that of WT ( p < 0.01). There were no significant variations in gas exchange parameters at steady state between WT and ST-OX or epf1 , although these parameters tended to be higher in ST-OX and epf1 than WT. On the other hand, ST-OX and epf1 showed faster A induction than WT after step increase in light owing to the higher g s under initial dark condition. In addition, ST-OX and epf1 showed initially faster g s induction and, at the later phase, slower g s induction. Cumulative CO 2 assimilation in ST-OX and epf1 was 57.6 and 78.8% higher than WT attributable to faster A induction with reduction of water use efficiency ( WUE ). epf1 yielded 25.6% higher biomass than WT under fluctuating light ( p < 0.01). In the present study, higher SD resulted in faster photosynthetic induction owing to the higher initial g s . epf1 , with a moderate increase in SD , achieved greater biomass production than WT under fluctuating light. Droplet epitaxy allows the efficient fabrication of a plethora of 3D, III-V-based nanostructures on different crystalline orientations. Quantum dots grown on a (311)A-oriented surface are obtained with record surface density, with or without a wetting layer. These are appealing features for quantum dot lasing, thanks to the large density of quantum emitters and a truly 3D lateral confinement. However, the intimate photophysics of this class of nanostructures has not yet been investigated. Here, we address the main optical and electronic properties of s-shell excitons in individual quantum dots grown on (311)A substrates with photoluminescence spectroscopy experiments. We show the presence of neutral exciton and biexciton as well as positive and negative charged excitons. We investigate the origins of spectral broadening, identifying them in spectral diffusion at low temperature and phonon interaction at higher temperature, the presence of fine interactions between electron and hole spin, and a relevant heavy-hole/light-hole mixing. We interpret the level filling with a simple Poissonian model reproducing the power excitation dependence of the s-shell excitons. These results are relevant for the further improvement of this class of quantum emitters and their exploitation as single-photon sources for low-density samples as well as for efficient lasers for high-density samples.

The dispersion relation and the angle-resolved reflection spectra of triangular-lattice photonic crystal slabs of the C 6v symmetry were examined by the finite element method. The Dirac-cone dispersion relation on the Γ point of the reciprocal space was confirmed. The reflection spectra showed unique selection rules that agreed with the analytical calculation by the k · p perturbation theory. The distortion of the liner dispersion relation of the Dirac cones due to diffraction loss was also reproduced well by the numerical calculation, while we found distortion-free Dirac cones materialized with E 2 -symmetric modes.

We introduce the concept of a quasi-triply-degenerate state (QTDS) and demonstrate its relation to an effective zero refractive index (ZRI) in a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice photonic crystal (PC) of all dielectric pillars. A QTDS is characterized by a triple band structure (TBS), wherein two of the bands manifest a linear dispersion around the Γ-point, i.e. a Dirac-like cone, while the third is a flat zero refractive index (ZRI) band with a frequency that is degenerate with one of the other bands. Significantly, we find that while triple degeneracy of the bands is not observed, the three bands approach one another so close that the observable properties of PCs adapted to the QTDS frequency perform as expected of a ZRI material. We closely examine the ZRI band at the Γ-point and show that by varying the PC material and structure parameters, the ZRI band behavior extends over a wide range of dielectric refractive indices enabling materials made with polymeric constituents. Moreover, the ZRI characteristics are robust and tolerant over a range of frequencies. Furthermore, the computational screening we employ to identify QTDS parameters enables the rational design of low-loss 2D ZRI materials for a broad range of photonic applications, including distributing a common reference phase, cloaking and focusing light.

We materialized the isotropic Dirac-cone dispersion relation in the mid-infrared range by fabricating photonic crystal slabs of the C 4v symmetry in SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafers by electron beam lithography. The dispersion relation was examined by the angle-resolved reflection spectra with our home-made high-resolution apparatus, which showed a good agreement with the dispersion relation and the reflection spectra calculated by the finite element method. The reflection spectra also agreed with the selection rules derived from the spatial symmetry of the Dirac-cone modes, which proved to be a powerful tool for the mode assignment.

There is a large variation in CO 2 assimilation rate per unit of leaf area (A) within or among crop species, which can be exploited to improve A by elucidating the mechanisms underlying such variation. The objective of the present study is to elucidate the genetic factors affecting the variation in leaf photosynthetic capacity among soybeans. Here, we conducted field experiments over three years, using Enrei, a leading variety in Japan, Peking, a landrace from China and the chromosome segment substitution lines derived from their progenies. The gas exchange measurements were conducted to evaluate A among soybean. Peking showed higher A than Enrei after the flowering in all the years. The genetic analysis identified two novel quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to variation in A, which were located on chromosome 13 (qLPC13) and 20 (qLPC20). The Peking allele at qLPC13 increased A by 8.3 % in the Enrei genetic background, while the Peking allele at qLPC20 decreased A by 15.3 %. The present study is the first report on QTLs affecting a genotypic variation in leaf photosynthetic capacity among field-grown soybeans. The stomatal density (SD) can be a promising target to improve the leaf photosynthesis in soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr). In a conventional SD evaluation, the counting process of the stomata during a manual operation can be time-consuming. We aimed to develop a high-throughput technique for evaluating the SD and elucidating the variation in the SD among various soybean accessions. The central leaflet of the first trifoliolate was sampled, and microscopic images of the leaflet replica were obtained among 90 soybean accessions. The Single Shot MultiBox Detector, an algorithm for an object detection based on deep learning, was introduced to develop an automatic detector of the stomata in the image. The developed detector successfully recognized the stomata in the microscopic image with high-throughput. Using this technique, the value of R 2 reached 0.90 when the manually and automatically measured SDs were compared in the 150 images. This technique discovered a variation in SD from 93 ± 3 to 166 ± 4 mm -2 among the 90 accessions. Our detector can be a powerful tool for a SD evaluation with a large-scale population in crop species, accelerating the identification of useful alleles related to the SD in future breeding programs.

We show by the first-order perturbation theory and the configuration interaction method that the Coulomb interaction in quantum rings mixes electron-hole pair states with the same total angular momentum, which makes it difficult to observe a clear excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) effect. To avoid this situation, we propose the use of a combined structure of a quantum dot on the top of a quantum ring with an applied static electric field. Under moderate experimental conditions with respect to the applied electric and magnetic fields, we show that we can observe the excitonic A-B effect due to the reduction of the Coulomb interaction and an increase in the difference between the average radii of the electron and hole trajectories.

We formulated an efficient numerical method for the dispersion relation of polaritonic channel waveguides and applied it to ZnO (wurzite) and ZnSe (zinc-blende) waveguides. The dispersion relation obtained by our calculations is distinct from that of bulk crystals. We found that important contributions to light propagation were made by two modes in the frequency range below the transverse exciton frequency, which was confirmed by comparing the group index obtained by our calculation with Fabry-Perot interference experiments. The numerical error of our method was estimated to be less than 1 % by comparing it with an analytical solution for a model structure. Our calculations predict an extremely small bending loss, which was estimated from the spatial decay rate of evanescent waves outside of the waveguide.

Background: There are some cases in whom a sufficient improvement in fractional flow reserve (FFR) could not be achieved even if anatomical results indicated satisfactory stent deployment. We investigated the relation of abnormal findings between intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and coronary pressure pullback measurement (CP-PB)., Methods: IVUS and CP-PB were investigated after stent deployment in 60 vessels in 53 patients. CP-PB criterion for adequate stent deployment was defined as a ratio of coronary pressure at the stent distal edge to the proximal edge (Psd/Psp) that is greater than 0.95., Results: Residual pressure gradient across the stent which was indicated by Psd/Psp≤0.95 was present in 11 (18%), and four of them were caused by insufficient stent expansion (incomplete apposition and asymmetric dilation), and five of them were caused by issues with stent edge (edge dissection and incomplete coverage of the plaques). Insufficient FFR recovery which was recorded at distal part of target vessel was present in 10 (17%), and the main causes corresponded to inadequate stent deployment in half of the lesions, and presence of residual lesion at a non-stent segment in the other half. There were six lesions in whom Psd/Psp was ≤0.95 but FFR was ≥0.80. Disagreement between IVUS and CP-PB findings was seen in 12 (20%)., Conclusions: Residual pressure gradient across the stent can reflect not only an insufficient stent expansion but also issues with stent edges. The decision of optimum stent deployment as assessed by IVUS and CP-PB was mismatched in 20% of cases, therefore careful attention should be paid to decoding the CP-PB findings., (Copyright © 2016 Japanese College of Cardiology. Recent studies have shown that bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP-9) can induce osteogenic differentiation in human periodontal stem cells and human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs). Bone morphogenetic protein 9 may be used in periodontal tissue regeneration because of its potent osteoinductive ability. Human periodontal ligament cells also have been demonstrated to produce stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), which is important for stem-cell homing and recruitment to injured sites. In the present study, we examined the involvement of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling axis in osteogenic differentiation and SDF-1 production in human PDLFs stimulated with BMP-9 in osteogenic medium supplemented with dexamethasone and ascorbic acid. Pretreatment of the cells with LY294002, a PI3K-specific inhibitor, suppressed not only BMP-9-enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity but also expression of a BMP-response gene (inhibitor of DNA binding 1) and osteogenic marker genes (runt-related transcription factor 2, osterix, bone sialoprotein, and osteopontin). In addition, BMP-9 up-regulated SDF-1 production, and the production of SDF-1 was suppressed by LY294002. The protein SDF-1-alpha was identified as a major isoform of SDF-1 that was regulated by BMP-9. Irradiance continuously fluctuates during the day in the field. The speed of the induction response of photosynthesis in high light affects the cumulative carbon gain of the plant and could impact growth and yield. The photosynthetic induction response and its relationship with the photosynthetic capacity under steady-state conditions (P max ) were evaluated in 37 diverse soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] genotypes. The induction response of leaf photosynthesis showed large variation among the soybean genotypes. After 5 min illumination with strong light, genotype NAM23 had the highest leaf photosynthetic rate of 33.8 µmol CO 2 m -2  s -1 , while genotype NAM12 showed the lowest rate at 4.7 µmol CO 2 m -2  s -1 . Cumulative CO 2 fixation (CCF) during the first 5 min of high light exposure ranged from 5.5 mmol CO 2 m -2 for NAM23 to 0.81 mmol CO 2 m -2 for NAM12. The difference in the induction response among genotypes was consistent throughout the growth season. However, there was no significant correlation between CCF and P max among genotypes suggesting that different mechanisms regulate P max and the induction response. The observed variation in the induction response was mainly attributed to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activation, but soybean lines differing in the induction response did not differ in the leaf content of Rubisco activase α- and β-proteins. Future studies will be focused on identifying molecular determinants of the photosynthetic induction response and determining whether this trait could be an important breeding target to achieve improved growth of soybeans in the field.

Lanthanoid series are unique in atomic elements. One reason is because they have 4f electronic states forbidding electric-dipole (ED) transitions in vacuum and another reason is because they are very useful in current-day optical technologies such as lasers and fiber-based telecommunications. Trivalent Er ions are well-known as a key atomic element supporting 1.5 μm band optical technologies and also as complex photoluminescence (PL) band deeply mixing ED and magnetic-dipole (MD) transitions. Here we show large and selective enhancement of ED and MD radiations up to 83- and 26-fold for a reference bulk state, respectively, in experiments employing plasmonic nanocavity arrays. We achieved the marked PL enhancement by use of an optimal design for electromagnetic (EM) local density of states (LDOS) and by Er-ion doping in deep subwavelength precision. We moreover clarify the quantitative contribution of ED and MD radiations to the PL band, and the magnetic Purcell effect in the PL-decay temporal measurement. This study experimentally demonstrates a new scheme of EM-LDOS engineering in plasmon-enhanced photonics, which will be a key technique to develop loss-compensated and active plasmonic devices.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the association of moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) with fractional flow reserve (FFR) after stent implantation., Background: Patients with moderate CKD have a higher prevalence of severe and diffuse coronary artery disease, and have increased risk of cardiovascular events even after stent implantation. On the other hand, in some patients, FFR could not be sufficiently improved even after stent implantation. However, the association between these pathophysiological processes is unclear., Methods and Results: A total of 102 patients with stable angina, in whom a stent was implanted for the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) lesion, were included. Patients with a severely decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR; > CKD stage 4) were excluded. Patients were stratified into 3 groups: those with an estimated GFR (eGFR) ≥ 60 mL per min per 1.73 m(2) (stage 0-2), 45 to 59 mL per min per 1.73 m(2) (stage 3a), and 30 to 44 mL per min per 1.73 m(2) (stage 3b). FFR after stent implantation (post-stent FFR) was significantly lower in the stage 3b group than in both the stage 0-2 group and the stage 3a group (P < 0.01). Post-stent FFR had a significant positive correlation with eGFR (r = 0.223, P = 0.024). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that eGFR was an independent predictor of post-stent FFR., Conclusions: Moderate CKD was independently associated with insufficient improvement of FFR after stent implantation. The compositional dependence of the structure and properties of spinel-type solid solutions, Zn(A,Ga)2O4 was investigated by comparison with samples hydrothermally prepared and those after heat treatment at 1000 °C in air. Nanocrystalline spinel-type solid solutions in the whole composition range in the ZnAl2O4-ZnGa2O4 system were directly formed from the aqueous precursor solutions of ZnSO4, Al(NO3)3 and Ga(NO3)3 under hydrothermal conditions at 180 °C for 5 h in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide. The incorporation of aluminum into the lattice, Zn(AlxGa1-x)2O4, resulted in lower crystallinity of the spinel. The relationship between the lattice parameter of as-prepared samples and the Al atomic ratio in the spinel composition was slightly apart from the ideal linear relationship that was obtained in the samples after heat treatment at 1000 °C. The optical band gap of both as-prepared solid solutions and those heat treated linearly increased from 4.1~4.2 to 5.25 eV by the incorporation of aluminum ion into the lattice, Zn(AlxGa1-x)2O4. Two main broad-band emission spectra centered at around 360 and 430 nm in the range of 300-600 nm were observed in the spinel solid solutions under excitation at 270 nm, thought their broad-band emission spectra and their peak wavelengths subtly changed depending on the composition and heat treatment.

We have experimentally shown significant suppression of metal-induced fluorescence (FL) quenching on plasmo-photonic metasurfaces by incorporating a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of sub-nm thickness. The FL signals of rhodamine dye molecules have been several-ten-fold enhanced by introducing the SAM, in comparison with the previous configuration contacting molecules and metal surfaces.

The range (0.75-0.80) of fractional flow reserve (FFR) is known as the gray zone. Although the FFR of 0.80 was recently adopted as the cutoff value for coronary revascularization, the long-term clinical outcomes of patients with angiographically moderate coronary artery stenosis (FFR: 0.75-0.80) remain unknown. The objective of the present study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of patients with angiographically moderate coronary artery stenosis, whose FFR was 0.75-0.80. One hundred and twenty consecutive patients, for whom coronary revascularization was deferred based on FFR, were categorized to groups I and II, in which 55 and 65 patients had FFRs of 0.75-0.80 and 0.81-0.85, respectively. Adverse cardiac events included all-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization for the FFR-measured and -unmeasured arteries, congestive heart failure, and admission for chest symptoms. Patients were followed up for 7 years after coronary angiography. Event-free survival rates of all adverse cardiac events were 73 % in group I and 63 % in group II (P = 0.35) and those of adverse cardiac events related to the FFR-measured artery were 94 and 85 % (P = 0.08). Throughout the follow-up period, the medication rate of statins was significantly lower in group II than in group I (P = 0.008). Seven-year clinical outcomes of patients with the gray-zone FFR were good. Furthermore, FFR-measured artery-related events in patients with the gray-zone FFR tended to occur less frequently than in patients with better FFR of 0.81-0.85. Optimal medical therapy is required for them, regardless of coronary stenosis severity and FFR.

Packaged dual-band metasurface thermal emitters integrated with a resistive membrane heater were manufactured by ultraviolet (UV) nanoimprint lithography followed by monolayer lift-off based on a soluble UV resist, which is mass-producible and cost-effective. The emitters were applied to infrared CO 2 sensing. In this planar Au/Al 2 O 3 /Au metasurface emitter, orthogonal rectangular Au patches are arrayed alternately and exhibit nearly perfect blackbody emission at 4.26 and 3.95 μ m necessary for CO 2 monitoring at the electric power reduced by 31%. The results demonstrate that metasurface infrared thermal emitters are almost ready for commercialization.

Background: Papaverine is useful for evaluating the functional status of a coronary artery, but it may provoke malignant ventricular arrhythmia (VA). The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, and clinical and ECG characteristics of patients with papaverine-induced VAs. METHODS AND RESULTS: The 182 consecutive patients underwent fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement of 277 lesions. FFR was determined after intracoronary papaverine administration by standard procedures. The clinical and ECG characteristics were compared between patients with and without ventricular tachycardia (VT: ≥3 successive premature ventricular beats (PVBs), or ventricular fibrillation (VF)). After papaverine administration, the QTc interval, QTUc interval, and T-peak to U-end interval were prolonged significantly. Single PVBs on the T-wave or U-wave type developed in 29 patients (15.9%). Polymorphic VT (torsade de pointes) occurred in 5 patients (2.8%), and of those, VF developed in 3 patients (1.7%). No clinical and baseline ECG parameters were predictors for VT or VF except for sex and administration of papaverine into the left coronary artery. Excessive prolongation of QT (or QTU), T-peak to U-end intervals and giant T-U waves were found immediately prior to the ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs), which were unpredictable from the baseline data., Conclusions: Intracoronary administration of papaverine induced fatal VTAs, although the incidence is rare. Excessive prolongation of the QT (and QTU) interval appeared prior to VTAs; however, they were unpredictable.

We demonstrate fiber-optic magnetometry using a random ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamond coupled to a tapered optical fiber, which provides a waveguide delivery of optical fields for the initialization, polarization, and readout of the electron spin in NV centers.

Objectives: To evaluate the first experience of real-time instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) measurement by clinicians., Background: The iFR is a new vasodilator-free index of coronary stenosis severity, calculated as a trans-lesion pressure ratio during a specific period of baseline diastole, when distal resistance is lowest and stable. Because all previous studies have calculated iFR offline, the feasibility of real-time iFR measurement has never been assessed., Methods: Three hundred ninety-two stenoses with angiographically intermediate stenoses were included in this multicenter international analysis. Instantaneous wave-free ratio and fractional flow reserve (FFR) were performed in real time on commercially available consoles. The classification agreement of coronary stenoses between iFR and FFR was calculated., Results: Instantaneous wave-free ratio and FFR maintain a close level of diagnostic agreement when both are measured by clinicians in real time (for a clinical 0.80 FFR cutoff: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [ROC(AUC)] 0.87, classification match 80%, and optimal iFR cutoff 0.90; for a ischemic 0.75 FFR cutoff: iFR ROC(AUC) 0.90, classification match 88%, and optimal iFR cutoff 0.85; if the FFR 0.75-0.80 gray zone is accounted for: ROC(AUC) 0.93, classification match 92%). When iFR and FFR are evaluated together in a hybrid decision-making strategy, 61% of the population is spared from vasodilator while maintaining a 94% overall agreement with FFR lesion classification., Conclusion: When measured in real time, iFR maintains the close relationship to FFR reported in offline studies. Background: The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes chronic kidney disease (CKD) guidelines recommend that CKD be classified based on the etiology, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and degree of albuminuria. The present study aimed to establish a method that predicts the presence of microalbuminuria by measuring the total urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (TPCR) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors., Methods and Results: We obtained urine samples from 1,033 patients who visited the cardiovascular clinic at St. Luke's International Hospital from February 2012 to August 2012. We measured the TPCR and the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) from random spot urine samples. We performed correlation, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, sensitivity, and subgroup analyses. There was a strong positive correlation between the TPCR and ACR (R2 = 0.861, p<0.001). A ROC curve analysis for the TPCR revealed a sensitivity of 94.4%, a specificity of 86.1%, and an area under the curve of 0.903 for detecting microalbuminuria for a TPCR cut-off value of 84 mg/g of creatinine. The subgroup analysis indicated that the cut-off value could be used for patients with CVD risk factors., Conclusions: These results suggest that the TPCR with an appropriate cut-off value could be used to screen for the presence of microalbuminuria in patients with CVD risk factors. This simple, inexpensive measurement has broader applications, leading to earlier intervention and public benefit.

In the last two decades, tissue-engineering approaches using scaffolds, growth factors, and cells, or their combination, have been developed for the regeneration of periodontal tissue and bone. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of rat dedifferentiated fat cells (rDFATs) with a poly lactic-co-glycolic acid/hydroxylapatite (PLGA/HA) composite on bone formation in rat calvarial defects. Twenty animals surgically received two calvarial defects (diameter, 5 mm) bilaterally in each parietal bone. The defects were treated by one of the following procedures: PLGA/HA+osteo-differentiated rDFATs implantation (PLGA/HA+rDFATs (OD)); PLGA/HA+rDFATs implantation (PLGA/HA+rDFATs); PLGA/HA implantation (PLGA/HA); no implantation as a control. The animals were euthanized at 8 weeks after the surgery for histological evaluation. The PLGA/HA composite was remarkably resorbed and the amounts of residual PLGA/HA were very slight at 8 weeks after the surgery. The PLGA/HA-implanted groups (PLGA/HA+rDFATs (OD), PLGA/HA+rDFATs and PLGA/HA) showed recovery of the original volume and contour of the defects. The newly formed bone area was significantly larger in the PLGA/HA group (42.10 ± 9.16 %) compared with the PLGA/HA+rDFATs (21.35 ± 13.49 %) and control (22.17 ± 13.08 %) groups (P < 0.05). The percentage of defect closure (DC) by new bone in the PLGA/HA+rDFATs (OD) group (83.16 ± 13.87 %) was significantly greater than that in the control group (40.61 ± 29.62 %) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the PLGA/HA+rDFATs (OD) group showed the highest level of DC among all the groups. The present results suggest that the PLGA/HA composite is a promising scaffold and that PLGA/HA+DFATs (OD) may be effective for bone formation.

Optical and electrical control of the nuclear spin system allows enhancing the sensitivity of NMR applications and spin-based information storage and processing. Dynamic nuclear polarization in semiconductors is commonly achieved in the presence of a stabilizing external magnetic field. Here we report efficient optical pumping of nuclear spins at zero magnetic field in strain-free GaAs quantum dots. The strong interaction of a single, optically injected electron spin with the nuclear spins acts as a stabilizing, effective magnetic field (Knight field) on the nuclei. We optically tune the Knight field amplitude and direction. In combination with a small transverse magnetic field, we are able to control the longitudinal and transverse components of the nuclear spin polarization in the absence of lattice strain--that is, in dots with strongly reduced static nuclear quadrupole effects, as reproduced by our model calculations.

We theoretically examine the bending loss of organic molecular-crystal nanofibers for which the light propagation is carried out by optically anisotropic exciton polaritons. Previous experimental studies showed that the leakage of light for bent thiacyanine nanofibers was negligibly small even for the radius of curvature of several microns. We formulate a finite-difference frequency-domain method stabilized by a conformal transformation to calculate the bending loss as a function of the radius of curvature and the propagation frequency. The present method is applied to the thiacyanine nanofiber and numerical results that support the previous experimental observation are obtained. The present study clearly shows that the polariton nanofiber gives a novel possibility for bent waveguides to fabricate optical microcircuits and interconnection that cannot be attained by the conventional waveguides based on the index guiding.

Objectives: This study aimed to review the safety of a reusable sealing instrument, BiClamp(®), as an alternative to the mechanical stapler for interlobar fissure division in pulmonary lobectomy., Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of 95 patients who underwent pulmonary lobectomy performed by a single surgeon between November 2005 and March 2010. The patients were divided into two groups according to the period before and after introduction of the BiClamp(®): 29 patients who underwent fissure division with staples only (staple group) and 66 patients who underwent the same procedure mainly with the instrument (BiClamp(®) group)., Results: There were 60 (63.2%) male and 35 (36.8%) female patients, with a mean ± SD age of 67.5 ± 10.8 years. Comparison of the characteristics of the two groups revealed that the BiClamp(®) group included significantly more cases of lobectomy by video-assisted thoracic surgery and far fewer completely lobulated lungs; 6 of 66 patients (9.1%) compared with 9 of 29 (31.0%) of the staple group. Except for 18 patients who underwent division using staples owing to thick parenchyma of the interlobar fissure, we attempted to divide the fissure of 42 patients in the BiClamp(®) group. Solo use of the BiClamp(®) was possible for 25 of 60 patients (41.7%) with an incomplete fissure. Eight patients (13.3%) needed one staple cartridge in combination with BiClamp(®), five (8.3%) needed two cartridges and four (6.7%) patients needed three (combined use). In most cases, except for right upper or middle lobectomy, the division of the interlobar fissure could be performed by sole use of the BiClamp(®). Incidence rates of prolonged air leakage and pneumonia were not significantly different between the two groups (respectively, 6.9 and 3.4% in the staple group vs 10.6 and 9.1% in the BiClamp(®) group)., Conclusions: The study results demonstrate that the division of the interlobar fissure in pulmonary lobectomy with BiClamp(®) is safe and feasible in most cases. While the results point out the limitation that division of the right upper or middle lobe may still be a challenge, they show the potential benefit of staple reduction. Less use of staples results in reduced medical costs and carbon dioxide emission, contributing to 'ecosurgery', which ultimately conserves the global environment.

Core-level and valence band spectra of In x Ga 1- x N films were measured using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES). Fine structure, caused by the coupling of the localized Ga 3d and In 4d with N 2s states, was experimentally observed in the films. Because of the large detection depth of HX-PES (∼20 nm), the spectra contain both surface and bulk information due to the surface band bending. The In x Ga 1- x N films ( x = 0-0.21) exhibited upward surface band bending, and the valence band maximum was shifted to lower binding energy when the mole fraction of InN was increased. On the other hand, downward surface band bending was confirmed for an InN film with low carrier density despite its n-type conduction. Although the Fermi level ( E F ) near the surface of the InN film was detected inside the conduction band as reported previously, it can be concluded that E F in the bulk of the film must be located in the band gap below the conduction band minimum.

Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) may enhance periodontal wound healing by inducing angiogenesis. We sought to investigate the effect and the mechanism of action of EMD on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production by human gingival fibroblasts. Cells were stimulated with EMD, transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), or fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), with or without antibodies to TGF-β1 or FGF-2. The levels of VEGF in the culture media were measured using an ELISA. We examined the effects of SB203580 [a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor], U0126 [an extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) inhibitor], SP600125 [a c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor], and LY294002 [a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt inhibitor] on EMD-induced VEGF production. Enamel matrix derivative stimulated the production of VEGF in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Treatment of human gingival fibroblasts with antibodies to TGF-β1 or FGF-2 significantly decreased EMD-induced VEGF production, whereas the addition of exogenous TGF-β1 and FGF-2 stimulated VEGF production. Enamel matrix derivative-induced VEGF production was significantly attenuated by SB203580, U0126, and LY294002. Our results suggest that EMD stimulates VEGF production partially via TGF-β1 and FGF-2 in human gingival fibroblasts and that EMD-induced VEGF production is regulated by ERK, p38 MAPK, and PI3K/Akt pathways.
