This paper explains how Leibniz's theological and cosmological views, as well as his criticism to the positions held by Descartes and Spinoza on those topics, entail an account for a radically objective conception of beauty. After introducing, in the first section, the place of aesthetics in the philosophical systems of the rationalists, the second section focuses on showing Leibniz's own definition of beauty and establishing a criterion of aesthetic objectivity based on arguments and ideas from contemporary aesthetics and the history of philosophy. In the third section, I examine Leibniz's argument against Cartesian voluntarism and Spinoza's subjectivism in relation to the notion of beauty. In the fourth, I evaluate whether Leibniz's ontological proposal on beauty is compatible with the definition of objectivity developed in the second section. I conclude that Leibnizian cosmology and metaphysics posits that beauty must be independent of any subjective corroboration, since the beauty of things is logically prior even to their existence, which results in an autonomous and objective conception of beauty., El presente trabajo busca explicar cómo la filosofía de Leibniz da cuenta de una concepción radicalmente objetiva de la belleza a partir de las posiciones teológicas y cosmológicas defendidas por el alemán en contra de Descartes y Spinoza. Después de introducir, en la primera sección, el lugar de la estética en los sistemas filosóficos de los racionalistas, la segunda sección se centra en exponer la definición de belleza propia de Leibniz y configurar un criterio de objetividad estética con el aporte de discusiones filosóficas históricas y contemporáneas. En la tercera sección, se revisa el argumento de Leibniz contra el voluntarismo cartesiano y el subjetivismo de Spinoza en relación a la noción de belleza. En la cuarta, evaluaremos si la propuesta ontológica sobre la belleza de Leibniz es compatible con la definición de objetividad desarrollada en la segunda sección. Se concluye que, a la luz de la cosmología y metafísica leibniziana, la belleza debe ser independiente de toda corroboración subjetiva, ya que la belleza de las cosas es lógicamente anterior, incluso, a la existencia de éstas, lo que resulta en una concepción autónoma y objetiva de la belleza.

Boghossian defends an updated version of Wittgenstein’s and Carnap’s view that analyticity should be stated in terms of implicit definitions. In contrast to Boghossian, Williamson believes that there is no way of understanding analytic truths that makes analyticity useful in philosophy. Within the scope of this thesis, these ‘post-Quinean’ attempts to describe analyticity and the analytic explanation of a priori will also be presented and critically reviewed.

This paper focuses on the clarification of the notions of unconscious perceptions («petites perceptions»), perceptions, and apperceptions in Leibniz’s theory of consciousness in order to answer two questions: 1) Ad intra, i.e. intra-substantially: How does an unconscious event become conscious within a single simple substance? 2) Ad extra, i.e. inter-substantially: where does consciousness arise in the hierarchy of monads? To answer these questions I will first analyse the theory of consciousness Leibniz framed in his metaphysics, with a focus on the most conflicting passages and problem that arise when defining consciousness. Second, I will examine the most commented interpretations that currently exist about this problem. I will focus on the positions of Rocco J. Gennaro, Larry M. Jorgensen, Christian Barth and Alison Simmons. Finally, I will propose a new interpretation of Leibniz’s theory of consciousness., El presente artículo se centra en el esclarecimiento de las nociones de percepciones inconscientes («petites perceptions»), percepciones y apercepciones en la teoría de la conciencia en Leibniz con el fin de responder dos preguntas: 1) Ad intra, es decir, intra-sustancialmente: ¿Cómo un evento inconsciente se vuelve consciente dentro de una misma sustancia simple?; 2) Ad extra, es decir, inter-sustancialmente: ¿dónde puede decirse que surge la conciencia en la jerarquía de mónadas? The text analyzes the fundamental principles around which Gabriel Tarde builds his approach to social life. This perspective, elaborated towards the end of the 19th century, is remarkably displaced with respect to both the holisms and the individualisms that dominated the social sciences and the humanities during the following century. One of the main reasons for this is that his philosophical starting point was not Kant, Hegel or Marx, but Leibniz. Tarde elaborates a (neo) monadological social theory. That is, he produces an infinitist conception of the social articulated around an ontology and an epistemology of infinitesimals and their associated concepts. This is what the paper intends to show., El texto analiza los principios fundamentales en torno a los cuales Gabriel Tarde construye su aproximación a la vida social. Esta perspectiva, elaborada hacia fines del siglo XIX, se encuentra notablemente descentrada tanto respecto de los holismos como los individualismos que dominaron las ciencias sociales y las humanidades durante el siglo siguiente. Una de las principales razones de ello es que su punto de partida filosófico no fue Kant, Hegel o Marx, sino Leibniz. Tarde elabora una teoría social (neo) monadológica. Es decir, produce una concepción infinitista de lo social articulada en torno auna ontología y una epistemología de los infinitesimales y sus conceptos asociados. Esto es lo que se propone mostrar el presente trabajo.

The seminar will explore the phenomenon of a priori knowledge. We'll consider some notable attempts to account for a priori knowledge in the history of philosophy (e.g., by Plato, Descartes, Hume, and Kant), some influential critiques of the notion; we will end by considering some contemporary approaches to the a priori.

Los males mundanos han problematizado la existencia de un Dios omnipotente, omnisciente y omnibenevolente desde hace siglos. Así, el sufrimiento del inocente o la permisión del mal evidente han puesto en tela de juicio los atributos divinos a la par que su existencia. Ante esta situación, el teísmo se ha visto en la obligación de dar respuestas para defender la figura divina. En 1710, la publicación de los Ensayos de teodicea de Leibniz tendrá como objetivo justificar a Dios de manera racional, afirmando que este es «el mejor de los mundos posibles». En ese mismo siglo, el terremoto de Lisboa terminará con el optimismo leibniziano y, más tarde, Kant situará al hombre en el centro del problema. De este modo, el hombre se erige como responsable del mal, con lo que surge la convicción de que ya no necesitamos a Dios para darle respuesta. El problema del mal tal como venía siendo planteado antes de la era moderna pierde así su razón de ser. En el siglo XX, barbaries como la de Auschwitz ponen en entredicho la moralidad humana, lo que parece traer a Dios de vuelta y replantea una cuestión que solo había atañido al hombre en el último siglo y medio., Worldly evils have problematised the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent God for centuries. Thus, the suffering of the innocent or the permission of obvious evil have questioned the divine attributes as well as their existence. In view of this situation, theism has been forced to provide answers in order to defend the divine figure. In 1710, the publication of Theodicy aimed to justify God rationally, stating that this is "the best of all possible worlds". In that same century, the Lisbon earthquake put an end to Leibniz's optimism and, later, Kant placed man at the centre of the problem. In this way, mankind stands as responsible for evil, which leads us to believe that God is no longer needed to provide an answer. The problem of evil as it had been raised before the modern era thus loses its reason for being. In the 20th century, barbarities such as Auschwitz question human morality, which seems to bring God back and reframes a question that had only concerned mankind in the last century and a half.

Muratori is known universally as a “father of history”, particularly insofar as he rediscovered the Middle Ages through the study of original documents; and later as the driving force behind a new aesthetic taste, one which relieved Italy from “Conceptism”, drawing it towards the poetics of the verisimilitude; not to mention a religious reformist, capable of surprising anticipations. Less well known is Muratori the “philosopher”, although even his contemporaries judged him so, and a number of recent encyclopaedias of philosophy provide him with a well-deserved mention. The essay sets out to show how Muratori’s theoretical and moral system made good use of both his direct and epistolary contacts with the higher reaches of European culture (from Leibniz to Montesquieu to the English Sensists, etc.). The hope remains that the city of Modena, which organises a highly attended “festival of philosophy”, might now take notice of its most prestigious citizen.

Between the years 1678 and 1685 Leibniz composed two treatises entitled Circa Geometrica Generalia (C.G.G.) and Notationes Generales (N.G.) where he presented a cryptic theory of the origin of positive integers closely related to the Mystery of the Trinity.This work aims at giving an interpretation of Leibniz’s mathematical ideas in terms of the concept of determinatio. Use is made of such an hypothesis in order to clarify the theological import of Leibniz’s conception., Entre los años 1678 y 1685 Leibniz compuso dos tratados – Circa Geometrica Generalia (C.G.G.) y Notationes Generales (N.G.) – en los cuales expone una críptica teoría del origen de los números enteros positivos estrechamente vinculada al Misterio de la Trinidad. Este trabajo propone una interpretación de las ideas matemáticas del filósofo mediante el concepto de determinatio. Tal hipótesis se utiliza para esclarecer el sentido teológico de la proposición leibniziana.

In this article, we present the reception that Leibniz’s theory known as the doctrine of optimism had in modernity. Although it is the interpretations of Kant and Hegel that will occupy us, to contextualize the doctrine of the best possible worlds it will be essential to refer to the immediate receptivity that the thesis had in the Enlightenment. Next, we analyze Kant’s text On some Observations about Optimism and his defense of Leibniz’s thesis. We dedicate the last section of the article to the lesson that Hegel devoted to the question of Leibniz’s optimism in his Lectures on the History of Philosophy., En este artículo se presenta la recepción que tuvo en la modernidad la teoría de Leibniz conocida como doctrina del optimismo. Aunque son las interpretaciones de Kant y de Hegel las que nos van a ocupar, para contextualizar la doctrina del mejor de los mundos posibles, será imprescindible referirnos a la acogida inmediata que la tesis tuvo en la Ilustración. A continuación, se analizará el texto de Kant «Algunas observaciones sobre el optimismo» y su defensa de las tesis de Leibniz. Dedicamos el último apartado del artículo a la lección que Hegel dedicó a la cuestión del optimismo de Leibniz en sus Lecciones sobre la historia de la filosofía.

This article offers an analysis of the concept of continuity, as it has been developed by two of its main exponents, Leibniz and Peirce. It begins defining the meaning of the concept, pointing out the different properties of the continuum identified by Leibniz and Peirce. After that, it takes into account the consequences and philosophical applications that the concept has for both philosophers, especially in their ontologies. In the first place, it exposes what Leibniz called the law of continuity and its different versions. Then, what Peirce called «synechism», which encompasses the whole set of ideas of this philosopher about continuity and its philosophical implications. Here we try to show, especially, how synechism is the key to the understanding and solving of many logical, epistemological and metaphysical problems, such as the axioms of logic, the justification of knowledge, mind body dualism, evolutionism and Realism about the universals., El presente artículo ofrece un análisis del concepto de continuidad, tal como fue desarrollado por dos de sus principales exponente, Leibniz y Peirce. Comienza por definir el significado del concepto, señalando las diferentes propiedades del continuum identificadas en ambos autores. Después señala las consecuencias y aplicaciones filosóficas que el concepto tiene para ambos filósofos, en especial para la ontología. En primer lugar, expone lo que Leibniz llamó la ley de continuidad y sus diferentes versiones. Luego, se habla de lo que Peirce denominó «sinequismo», que constituye el conjunto de ideas de este filósofo acerca de la continuidad y de sus implicaciones filosóficas. Aquí se intenta mostrar, especialmente, como el sinequismo constituye la clave para la comprensión de muchos problemas lógicos, epistemológicos y metafísicos, como el de la validez de los axiomas de la lógica, la justificación del conocimiento, el dualismo mente cuerpo, el evolucionismo y el realismo acerca de los universales.

This article begins with a historiographical incursion into the baroque philosophies of G. W. Leibniz and Baltasar Gracián, mediated by Gilles Deleuze’s studies on the Baroque and the concept of «fold». From there, I will try to offer a critical evaluation of the controversial cultural phenomenon that is contemporary transhumanism, guided by the thesis according to which the idiosyncratic features of 17th century’s thought and life («baroque ethos») survive in our days in the form of a Neo-Baroque. Specifically, I will show that: i) our epoch is strongly conditioned by a context of cultural crisis in which a cultural movement —transhumanism— tries to save an ideal, which is no longer theological as in the classical Baroque but anthropological; ii) the operative function proper to this contemporary Neo-Baroque is the «over-fold», which allows us to take charge of the unavoidable technological component that anthropology currently presents, El presente artículo parte de una incursión historiográfica en las filosofías barrocas de G. W. Leibniz y Baltasar Gracián, mediada por los estudios de Gilles Deleuze sobre el Barroco y el concepto de «pliegue». A partir de ahí, se tratará de ofrecer una evaluación crítica del controvertido fenómeno cultural que es el transhumanismo contemporáneo, guiada por la tesis según la cual los rasgos idiosincrásicos del pensamiento y la vida en el siglo XVII («ethos barroco») perviven en nuestros días bajo la forma de un Neobarroco. Concretamente, mostraremos que: i) nuestra época está fuertemente condicionada por un contexto de crisis cultural en el que un movimiento —el transhumanismo— trata de salvar un ideal, que no es ya teológico como en el Barroco clásico, sino antropológico; ii) la función operatoria propia de este Neobarroco contemporáneo es el «sobrepliegue», que permite hacerse cargo de la insoslayable componente tecnológica que presenta actualmente la antropología.

In this article, I will try to elucidate the characterization of the European Baroque that Deleuze proposes in The Fold to isolate the idiosyncratic traits it shares with the Hispanic Baroque, defining as they are of an ethos directed towards an alternative Modernity to the one that finally prevailed. I will, thus, transit from Deleuze’s interpretation of the Leibnizian philosophy of the subject as a «mannerism» to the Gratian characterization of the hero and the world, to show that in both approaches there is an ontology of power that belies the essentialism of the subject characteristic of Cartesian Modernity in favor of an internal or immanent evaluation of the subject shaped in times of crisis and with a markedly Stoic inspiration., En el presente artículo, se tratará de dilucidar la caracterización del Barroco europeo que Deleuze propone en El pliegue, con miras a aislar los rasgos idiosincrásicos que comparte con el Barroco hispano, definitorios como son de un ethos encaminado hacia una Modernidad alternativa a la que finalmente se impuso. Transitaremos así de la interpretación de la filosofía leibniziana del sujeto como un «manierismo» que ofrece Deleuze a la caracterización graciana del héroe y el mundo, con miras a mostrar que en ambos planteamientos hay una ontología de la potencia que desmiente el esencialismo a propósito del sujeto característico de la Modernidad de cuño cartesiano, en provecho de una evaluación interna o inmanente del sujeto conformada en tiempos de crisis y con una marcada inspiración estoica.

Specifically, Leibniz’s use of the principles can be considered a practical application of Suárez’s approach regarding principles in the Metaphysical Disputations., G. W. In this article, I will try to elucidate the characterization of the European Baroque that Deleuze proposes in The Fold to isolate the idiosyncratic traits it shares with the Hispanic Baroque, defining as they are of an ethos directed towards an alternative Modernity to the one that finally prevailed. I will, thus, transit from Deleuze’s interpretation of the Leibnizian philosophy of the subject as a «mannerism» to the Gratian characterization of the hero and the world, to show that in both approaches there is an ontology of power that belies the essentialism of the subject characteristic of Cartesian Modernity in favor of an internal or immanent evaluation of the subject shaped in times of crisis and with a markedly Stoic inspiration., En el presente artículo, se tratará de dilucidar la caracterización del Barroco europeo que Deleuze propone en El pliegue, con miras a aislar los rasgos idiosincrásicos que comparte con el Barroco hispano, definitorios como son de un ethos encaminado hacia una Modernidad alternativa a la que finalmente se impuso. Transitaremos así de la interpretación de la filosofía leibniziana del sujeto como un «manierismo» que ofrece Deleuze a la caracterización graciana del héroe y el mundo, con miras a mostrar que en ambos planteamientos hay una ontología de la potencia que desmiente el esencialismo a propósito del sujeto característico de la Modernidad de cuño cartesiano, en provecho de una evaluación interna o inmanente del sujeto conformada en tiempos de crisis y con una marcada inspiración estoica.

Between the years 1678 and 1685 Leibniz composed two treatises entitled Circa Geometrica Generalia (C.G.G.) and Notationes Generales (N.G.) where he presented a cryptic theory of the origin of positive integers closely related to the Mystery of the Trinity.This work aims at giving an interpretation of Leibniz’s mathematical ideas in terms of the concept of determinatio. Use is made of such an hypothesis in order to clarify the theological import of Leibniz’s conception., Entre los años 1678 y 1685 Leibniz compuso dos tratados – Circa Geometrica Generalia (C.G.G.) y Notationes Generales (N.G.) – en los cuales expone una críptica teoría del origen de los números enteros positivos estrechamente vinculada al Misterio de la Trinidad. Este trabajo propone una interpretación de las ideas matemáticas del filósofo mediante el concepto de determinatio. Tal hipótesis se utiliza para esclarecer el sentido teológico de la proposición leibniziana.

This article offers an analysis of the concept of continuity, as it has been developed by two of its main exponents, Leibniz and Peirce. It begins defining the meaning of the concept, pointing out the different properties of the continuum identified by Leibniz and Peirce. After that, it takes into account the consequences and philosophical applications that the concept has for both philosophers, especially in their ontologies. In the first place, it exposes what Leibniz called the law of continuity and its different versions. Then, what Peirce called «synechism», which encompasses the whole set of ideas of this philosopher about continuity and its philosophical implications. Here we try to show, especially, how synechism is the key to the understanding and solving of many logical, epistemological and metaphysical problems, such as the axioms of logic, the justification of knowledge, mind body dualism, evolutionism and Realism about the universals., El presente artículo ofrece un análisis del concepto de continuidad, tal como fue desarrollado por dos de sus principales exponente, Leibniz y Peirce. Comienza por definir el significado del concepto, señalando las diferentes propiedades del continuum identificadas en ambos autores. Después señala las consecuencias y aplicaciones filosóficas que el concepto tiene para ambos filósofos, en especial para la ontología. En primer lugar, expone lo que Leibniz llamó la ley de continuidad y sus diferentes versiones. Luego, se habla de lo que Peirce denominó «sinequismo», que constituye el conjunto de ideas de este filósofo acerca de la continuidad y de sus implicaciones filosóficas. Aquí se intenta mostrar, especialmente, como el sinequismo constituye la clave para la comprensión de muchos problemas lógicos, epistemológicos y metafísicos, como el de la validez de los axiomas de la lógica, la justificación del conocimiento, el dualismo mente cuerpo, el evolucionismo y el realismo acerca de los universales.

G. W. Leibniz was a regular reader of the philosophical work of Suárez, reading that left a deep trace in his metaphysics. Specifically, Leibniz’s use of the principles can be considered a practical application of Suárez’s approach regarding principles in the Metaphysical Disputations., G. W. Leibniz fue un lector frecuente de la obra filosófica de Suárez, lectura que dejó una huella profunda en su metafísica. This article begins with a historiographical incursion into the baroque philosophies of G. W. Leibniz and Baltasar Gracián, mediated by Gilles Deleuze’s studies on the Baroque and the concept of «fold». From there, I will try to offer a critical evaluation of the controversial cultural phenomenon that is contemporary transhumanism, guided by the thesis according to which the idiosyncratic features of 17th century’s thought and life («baroque ethos») survive in our days in the form of a Neo-Baroque. Specifically, I will show that: i) our epoch is strongly conditioned by a context of cultural crisis in which a cultural movement —transhumanism— tries to save an ideal, which is no longer theological as in the classical Baroque but anthropological; ii) the operative function proper to this contemporary Neo-Baroque is the «over-fold», which allows us to take charge of the unavoidable technological component that anthropology currently presents, El presente artículo parte de una incursión historiográfica en las filosofías barrocas de G. W. Leibniz y Baltasar Gracián, mediada por los estudios de Gilles Deleuze sobre el Barroco y el concepto de «pliegue». A partir de ahí, se tratará de ofrecer una evaluación crítica del controvertido fenómeno cultural que es el transhumanismo contemporáneo, guiada por la tesis según la cual los rasgos idiosincrásicos del pensamiento y la vida en el siglo XVII («ethos barroco») perviven en nuestros días bajo la forma de un Neobarroco. Concretamente, mostraremos que: i) nuestra época está fuertemente condicionada por un contexto de crisis cultural en el que un movimiento —el transhumanismo— trata de salvar un ideal, que no es ya teológico como en el Barroco clásico, sino antropológico; ii) la función operatoria propia de este Neobarroco contemporáneo es el «sobrepliegue», que permite hacerse cargo de la insoslayable componente tecnológica que presenta actualmente la antropología.

L’objet de cette recherche consiste à montrer comment Leibniz est parvenu à réaliser un projet très tôt identifié :celui de fonder scientifiquement le droit naturel. L’analyse des textes choisis, qui couvrent une période très courte (1666-1677), et la méthode génétique adoptée, nous ont permis de dégager l’évolution progressive de la doctrine du juste. Nous exposons d’abord le contexte dans lequel Leibniz entreprend ce projet, pour montrer ensuite comment, dans la Nova Methodus de 1667, il entend mettre en œuvre ce projet. Sa compréhension de la fin du droit comme évitement du mal, ainsi que l’absence de moyens de démonstration, ne permettent pas de considérer que le projet fut accompli. Nous montrons qu’il se réalise dans les Elementa juris naturalis (1669-1671). En effet, on peut considérer que Leibniz est parvenu à mettre en œuvre ce projet par la formulation des définitions de la justice et des vertus morales d’une part, et par la formulation des règles à partir desquelles il est possible de démontrer l’ensemble des préceptes du droit d’autre part. Par ailleurs, à partir de la définition de la justice comme habitude d’aimer tous les hommes, nous montrons que la science du droit est désormais orientée vers l’accomplissement de la félicité de tous les hommes.Après la rédaction des Elementa, Leibniz séjourne quelques années à Paris. Pendant son séjour, il rédige un ensemble de textes qui réforment les concepts préalablement établis de sagesse et de félicité. L’analyse de ces textes nous a conduits à une approche plus introspective de la sagesse et du bonheur. L’une des avancées est que Leibniz considère la tranquillité de l’âme dans son articulation au fait d’être capable d’aimer tous les hommes. In the present text it is intended, on the one hand, to put Leibniz's thinking in relation to those positions that he tried to reconcile from an overcoming perspective, that is, absolute determinism and theological voluntarism, -which will serve to expose his own system of modal notions in a clear and concise way- and, on the other hand, to attend to the difficulties involved in trying to maintain a traditional standpoint in theology from a rationalist position; some of which, we consider, can be illustrated from a new perspective by attending to the Leibnizian defence of miracles., En el presente escrito se pretende, por un lado, poner el pensamiento de Leibniz en relación con aquellas posiciones que pretendió conciliar desde una perspectiva superadora, esto es, el determinismo absoluto y el voluntarismo teológico, -lo cual servirá para exponer su propio sistema de nociones modales de una forma clara y concisa- y, por otro lado, atender a las dificultades que entraña el tratar de mantener una posición tradicional en teología desde una posición racionalista; algunas de las cuales, consideramos, pueden ilustrarse desde una nueva perspectiva al atender a la defensa leibniciana de los milagros.

This paper aims to examine the Leibnizian concept of mathematical fiction, emphasizing Leibniz’s view on the fictional character of infinitary notions. Firstly, a set of five conditions that fiction has to fulfill to be mathematically admissible is proposed as a general framework for the investigation. Based on Leibniz’s conceptions of symbolic knowledge, mathematical fiction is proposed as the class of confused notions that lack denotation due to the impossibility of their object. Departing from the analysis of the impossibility in terms of inconsistency, it is shown that Leibniz admits other forms of impossibility, especially for the infinitary notions. Thus, we propose impossibility as geometric irrepresentability and impossibility on the grounds of incompatibility with architectonic principles. In this way, the output of our examination supports the admission of three types of mathematical fiction: fiction1, which corresponds to the inconsistent notions, fiction2 that includes geometrically unrepresentable notions, and fiction3, which applies to “architectonically” impossible notions. In conclusion, infinitary concepts, without being inconsistent, correspond to the type of fiction2 andfiction3. Finally, it is concluded that Leibniz’s concerns focus on the impossibility due to incompatibility with architectonic principles rather than on the issue of geometric irrepresentability. Also we propose  some general issues about the relationships between Mathematics and reality in Leibniz’s philosophy., El objetivo de este trabajo es examinar el concepto leibniziano de ficción matemática, con especial énfasis en la tesis de Leibniz acerca del carácter ficcional de las nociones infinitarias. Se propone en primer lugar, como marco general de la investigación, un conjunto de cinco condiciones que una ficción tiene que cumplir para ser matemáticamente admisible. Sobre la base de las concepciones de Leibniz acerca del conocimiento simbólico, se propone la ficción matemática como la clase de nociones confusas que carecen de denotación a raíz de la imposibilidad de su objeto. Tomando como punto de partida el análisis de la imposibilidad en términos de inconsis  tencia, se muestra que Leibniz admite otras formas de imposibilidad, que afectan especialmente a las nociones infinitarias. Proponemos así la imposibilidad como irrepresentabilidad geométrica y la imposibilidad por incompatibilidad con principios arquitectónicos. Así, el resultado de nuestro examen fundamenta la admisión de tres tipos de ficcionalidad matemática, la ficción1, que se corresponde con la noción inconsistente, la ficción2 que incluye las nociones geométricamente irrepresentables y la ficción3, que se aplica a las nociones “arquitectónicamente” imposibles. En conclusión, los conceptos infinitarios, sin ser por sí mismos inconsistentes, corresponden al tipo de ficcion2 y ficción3. Finalmente, se concluye que Leibniz está más preocupado por la imposibilidad por incompatibilidad con principios arquitectónicos que por la cuestión de la irrepresentabilidad geométrica.

The question of “why there is someone rather than no one” compels us to revisit Leibniz’squestion of “why there is something rather than nothing”, as implied by his principle of sufficientreason, full determination, and trust it provides. 1) We will pursue that implication in some detailuntil we arrive at the dimension that Leibniz attributes to someone, and this someone’s propertieswithin his system. 2) On the basis of a succint historical consideration that contrasts Descartes with theNeoplatonic background (animism), and reviews Spinoza’s reaction (monism and immanentism) to hispredecessor (dualism), I will attempt to illustrate Leibniz’s (transcendent) position on the question thatguides us. 3) But the question is still pertinent today, vis à-vis certain positions—naturalism or nihilism,for example—that would contend that there is no one rather than someone. 4) To this end, we will assessthe extent to which Leibniz helps us, on the one hand, and, on the other, just how far we ought to strayfrom him, or from a traditional interpretation of his concept of reason., La cuestión de ‘Por qué hay alguien más bien que nadie?’ obliga a retomar la que indaga por qué hay algo y no más bien nada, que debemos a Leibniz y que implica su principio de razón suficiente, la completa determinación y la confianza que ello provee. 1) Perseguiremos esa implicación con cierto detalle hasta lograr la dimensión que Leibniz le otorga aalguien y sus propiedades en su sistema. 2) Mediante una sucinta consideración histórica a partir del contraste de Descartes con el trasfondo neoplatónico (animismo), y un recuento de la reacción de Spinoza (monismo e inmanentismo) frente a su predecesor (dualismo), intentaré ilustrar la postura de Leibniz (trascendente) respecto de la pregunta que nos orienta. 3) Pero la pregunta es pertinente todavía hoy frente a posturas que apostarían a que más bien >nadie que alguien, tales como el naturalismo o el nihilismo, 4) para lo cual finalmente valoraremos cuánto nos ayuda Leibniz, y qué tanto hemos de apartarnos de él, o de una tradicional interpretación de su concepto de razón.

The controversy between Leibniz and Malebranche regarding the relationship between substances is addressed. Four hypotheses are proposed to explain this interaction: physical influence (scholasticism), immediate divine assistance (occasionalism, Malebranche), identity (Spinoza), and prior harmony (Leibniz). Leibniz's critical position regarding the other three hypotheses is explained. Regarding the first hypothesis, Leibniz and Malebranche agree that it is not viable. Leibniz's critique of Malebranche's occasionalism (second hypothesis) and Spinoza's substantialist monism (third hypothesis) are explained. And finally it is analyzed, from the hypothesis of prior harmony (fourth hypothesis), the way in which Leibniz takes advantage of the dispute with occasionalism, both in Malebranche's version and in Pierre Bayle's, to claim the autonomy of reason in the field of second causes. The notion of the nature of things, the principle of diversity and the principle of sufficient reason play a fundamental role in this., Se aborda la polémica entre Leibniz y Malebranche en torno a la relación entre las sustancias. Se plantean cuatro hipótesis para explicar esta interacción: la influencia física (escolástica), la asistencia divina inmediata (ocasionalismo, Malebranche), la identidad (Spinoza) y la armonía previa (Leibniz). Se explica la posición crítica de Leibniz respecto a las otras tres. En relación con la primera hipótesis Leibniz y Malebranche están de acuerdo en que no es viable. Se explican la crítica de Leibniz al ocasionalismo de Malebranche (segunda hipótesis) y al monismo sustancialista de Spinoza (tercera hipótesis). The object of this article is to clarify the Leibnizian concept of reason by analysing his project to found a society or academy of sciences in Germany. Leibniz’s writings on this subject present a theoretical and practical plan that would knowingly be at the service of the rational configuration and constitution of the real by creating an entity for general wellbeing and technological progress for the benefit of society. In the particular illustrated conception that underlies the creation of the academies, Leibniz brings together fundamental elements of his thinking, such as the idea that the defence of rationality is only possible for humans if both the individual and the communities participate in the universal principles of rationality from a specific perspective., Este artículo contribuye a aclarar el concepto leibniziano de razón a partir del análisis de su proyecto de fundación de una sociedad o academia de las ciencias en Alemania. Los escritos de Leibniz sobre esta temática nos muestran un plan teórico y práctico puesto conscientemente al servicio de la conformación y constitución racional de lo real, mediante la institución de un organismo para el bienestar general y el progreso técnico en beneficio de la sociedad. En la particular concepción ilustrada que subyace a su proyecto de fundación de academias Leibniz pone en juego elementos fundamentales de su pensamiento, como la defensa de que la racionalidad sólo es posible para el ser humano en tanto que el individuo y las comunidades participan de los principios universales de la racionalidad desde una determinada perspectiva.

During his epistolary exchange with Spinoza, Tschirnhaus argues the impossibility of deducing the nature of particular bodies from extension alone. This objection lies in his incapability to detach himself from Descartes’ substantial conception of bodies as finite parts of matter. Nevertheless, this question becomes obscured by Leibniz’s irruption at a crucial point of the correspondence. His interference will transform a physical dispute into a theological one. This paper aims to show that the metaphysical issue detected by Leibniz consists in the radical affirmation of the principle of plenitude, upheld by Spinoza in proposition 16 of the first part of the Ethics, as well as the heretical consequences that follow from it. The examination of the role that Leibniz’s critique played in the development of the discussion will allow us to read in a new light both Tschirnhaus’ paradoxical attitude and Spinoza’s enigmatic and elusive answers., Durante su intercambio epistolar con Spinoza, Tschirnhaus defiende la imposibilidad de deducir la naturaleza de los cuerpos particulares a partir de la sola extensión. El motivo de esta objeción reside en su dificultad para desmarcarse de la concepción sustancial de los cuerpos como partes finitas de la extensión sostenida por Descartes. The problem of evil has tormented human beings since time immemorial. Therefore, reflections on this question and its compatibility with the existence of an almighty, omniscient and good God have always been a part of our human existence, especially in the Judaeo-Christian world. Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas, among others, contributed to the building of a philosophicotheological response to that question that was considered for a long time as a proposal that, even though it didn´t solve the problem entirely, at least shed light on it. However, after Kant, many thinkers have radically rejected the possibility of a theodicy, conceived as a speculative reflection of a metaphysical basis for the problem of evil and its relation to God. In this rejection, whose main object is the Leibnizian justification of divine innocence, are often included other responses like the Augustinian position. This essay tries to analyze both stances in order to reach a conclusion, in the light of the traits that Ricoeur considers as essential to every theodicy, as long as the objections commonly posed to Leibniz, also affect the Augustinian approach., El problema del mal ha atormentado al ser humano desde tiempo inmemorial. De ahí que las reflexiones acerca de dicha cuestión y su compatibilidad o no con la existencia de un Dios todopoderoso, omnisciente y bueno no hayan dejado nunca de acompañarlo, especialmente en el mundo judeocristiano. San Agustín y Santo Tomás, entre otros, contribuyeron a forjar una respuesta filosófico-teológica a la cuestión, que se mantuvo durante mucho tiempo como una luz que, si bien no la esclarecía por entero, se creía al menos que la iluminaba suficientemente. Sin embargo, después de Kant, muchos han rechazado radicalmente la posibilidad de la teodicea, concebida como reflexión especulativa de base metafísica acerca del problema del mal y su relación con Dios. En ese rechazo, dirigido especialmente a la justificación leibniciana de la inocencia divina, a menudo se incluyen también otras respuestas como la del propio San Agustín. Este trabajo se propone analizar ambas posturas para concluir, a la luz de los rasgos que Ricoeur cree esenciales en toda teodicea, si aquello de lo que suele acusarse a Leibniz afecta también a la posición agustiniana.

The way Leibniz applied his philosophy to mathematics has been the subject of longstanding debates. A key piece of evidence is his letter to Masson on bodies. We offer an interpretation of this often misunderstood text, dealing with the status of infinite divisibility in nature, rather than in mathematics. In line with this distinction, we offer a reading of the fictionality of infinitesimals. The letter has been claimed to support a reading of infinitesimals according to which they are logical fictions, contradictory in their definition, and thus absolutely impossible. The advocates of such a reading have lumped infinitesimals with infinite wholes, which are rejected by Leibniz as contradicting the partwhole principle. Far from supporting this reading, the letter is arguably consistent with the view that infinitesimals, as inassignable quantities, are mentis fictiones, i.e., (well-founded) fictions usable in mathematics, but possibly contrary to the Leibnizian principle of the harmony of things and not necessarily idealizing anything in rerum natura. Unlike infinite wholes, infinitesimals - as well as imaginary roots and other well-founded fictions - may involve accidental (as opposed to absolute) impossibilities, in accordance with the Leibnizian theories of knowledge and modality.

This article presents historical contributions of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculation (FTC) which could be mediated by technological tools. It seeks to identify in the arguments of Newton and Leibniz, a heuristic potential for the construction of structures to solve a problem that over time has been known as the FTC, under the theoretical and methodological framework of the ontosemiotical approach. The results of this update scan of Newton and Leibniz’s arguments are presented with the mediation of the mathematical software Geogebra. The exploration results articulate historical and technological factors on the FTC and they could be applied on the curricular area, for instance, in the design of tasks for the training of college students., Este artículo presenta aspectos históricos del Teorema Fundamental del Cálculo (TFC) que podrían ser mediados por herramientas tecnológicas. Esta exploración pretende identificar en los argumentos de Newton y de Leibniz, un potencial heurístico para ser incorporados en ambientes de aprendizaje del cálculo en las universidades. Se presentan los resultados de una exploración de actualización de los argumentos de Newton y de Leibniz con la mediación del software matemático Geogebra. Los resultados de esta exploración articulan factores históricos y tecnológicos del TFC, que podrían usarse de manera curricular, por ejemplo, en el diseño de tareas para la formación universitaria.

In this paper I examine some of Bertrand Russell's philosophical presuppositions underlying his discovery of paradoxes in Cantor's set theory: Kant's a priori and synthetic judgments, Leibniz's logicism, the Hegelian worldview, St. Anselm's ontological argument., En este artículo examino algunos presupuestos filosóficos de Bertrand Russell que subyacen a su descubrimiento de las paradojas en la teoría de conjuntos de Cantor: los juicios a priori y sintéticos de Kant, el logicismo de Leibniz, la cosmovisión hegeliana, el argumento ontológico de san Anselmo.

The purpose of this research is to reconstruct the notion of practical identity in both Aristotle and Leibniz in order to show to what extent, the Hanoverian is indebted with Aristotle and to what extent one proposal can be distinguished from the other. To achieve this we do two things: on the one hand, we analyze the Aristotelian notion of praxis and moral agency trough his notion of habituation; on the other hand, we notice the practical dimension that Leibniz assigns to his notion of personal identity, based on his notions of conscientia and moral quality., Resumen El presente trabajo de investigación tiene por objetivo reconstruir la noción de identidad práctica tanto en Aristóteles como en Leibniz, a fin de mostrar en qué medida el hannoveriano es deudor del Estagirita y en qué medida se distingue una propuesta de la otra. Para lograr esto hacemos dos cosas: por un lado, analizamos la noción aristotélica de praxis y de agencia moral a la luz de su noción de habituación; por otro lado, damos cuenta de la dimensión práctica que el hannoveriano adscribe a su noción de identidad personal, a partir de sus nociones de conscientia y cualidad moral.

In the present text it is intended, on the one hand, to put Leibniz's thinking in relation to those positions that he tried to reconcile from an overcoming perspective, that is, absolute determinism and theological voluntarism, -which will serve to expose his own system of modal notions in a clear and concise way- and, on the other hand, to attend to the difficulties involved in trying to maintain a traditional standpoint in theology from a rationalist position; some of which, we consider, can be illustrated from a new perspective by attending to the Leibnizian defence of miracles., En el presente escrito se pretende, por un lado, poner el pensamiento de Leibniz en relación con aquellas posiciones que pretendió conciliar desde una perspectiva superadora, esto es, el determinismo absoluto y el voluntarismo teológico, -lo cual servirá para exponer su propio sistema de nociones modales de una forma clara y concisa- y, por otro lado, atender a las dificultades que entraña el tratar de mantener una posición tradicional en teología desde una posición racionalista; algunas de las cuales, consideramos, pueden ilustrarse desde una nueva perspectiva al atender a la defensa leibniciana de los milagros.

The object of this article is to clarify the Leibnizian concept of reason by analysing his project to found a society or academy of sciences in Germany. Leibniz’s writings on this subject present a theoretical and practical plan that would knowingly be at the service of the rational configuration and constitution of the real by creating an entity for general wellbeing and technological progress for the benefit of society. In the particular illustrated conception that underlies the creation of the academies, Leibniz brings together fundamental elements of his thinking, such as the idea that the defence of rationality is only possible for humans if both the individual and the communities participate in the universal principles of rationality from a specific perspective., Este artículo contribuye a aclarar el concepto leibniziano de razón a partir del análisis de su proyecto de fundación de una sociedad o academia de las ciencias en Alemania. Los escritos de Leibniz sobre esta temática nos muestran un plan teórico y práctico puesto conscientemente al servicio de la conformación y constitución racional de lo real, mediante la institución de un organismo para el bienestar general y el progreso técnico en beneficio de la sociedad. En la particular concepción ilustrada que subyace a su proyecto de fundación de academias Leibniz pone en juego elementos fundamentales de su pensamiento, como la defensa de que la racionalidad sólo es posible para el ser humano en tanto que el individuo y las comunidades participan de los principios universales de la racionalidad desde una determinada perspectiva.

This paper aims to examine the Leibnizian concept of mathematical fiction, emphasizing Leibniz’s view on the fictional character of infinitary notions. Firstly, a set of five conditions that fiction has to fulfill to be mathematically admissible is proposed as a general framework for the investigation. Based on Leibniz’s conceptions of symbolic knowledge, mathematical fiction is proposed as the class of confused notions that lack denotation due to the impossibility of their object. Departing from the analysis of the impossibility in terms of inconsistency, it is shown that Leibniz admits other forms of impossibility, especially for the infinitary notions. Thus, we propose impossibility as geometric irrepresentability and impossibility on the grounds of incompatibility with architectonic principles. In this way, the output of our examination supports the admission of three types of mathematical fiction: fiction1, which corresponds to the inconsistent notions, fiction2 that includes geometrically unrepresentable notions, and fiction3, which applies to “architectonically” impossible notions. In conclusion, infinitary concepts, without being inconsistent, correspond to the type of fiction2 andfiction3. Finally, it is concluded that Leibniz’s concerns focus on the impossibility due to incompatibility with architectonic principles rather than on the issue of geometric irrepresentability. Also we propose  some general issues about the relationships between Mathematics and reality in Leibniz’s philosophy., El objetivo de este trabajo es examinar el concepto leibniziano de ficción matemática, con especial énfasis en la tesis de Leibniz acerca del carácter ficcional de las nociones infinitarias. Se propone en primer lugar, como marco general de la investigación, un conjunto de cinco condiciones que una ficción tiene que cumplir para ser matemáticamente admisible. Sobre la base de las concepciones de Leibniz acerca del conocimiento simbólico, se propone la ficción matemática como la clase de nociones confusas que carecen de denotación a raíz de la imposibilidad de su objeto. Tomando como punto de partida el análisis de la imposibilidad en términos de inconsis  tencia, se muestra que Leibniz admite otras formas de imposibilidad, que afectan especialmente a las nociones infinitarias. Proponemos así la imposibilidad como irrepresentabilidad geométrica y la imposibilidad por incompatibilidad con principios arquitectónicos. Así, el resultado de nuestro examen fundamenta la admisión de tres tipos de ficcionalidad matemática, la ficción1, que se corresponde con la noción inconsistente, la ficción2 que incluye las nociones geométricamente irrepresentables y la ficción3, que se aplica a las nociones “arquitectónicamente” imposibles. En conclusión, los conceptos infinitarios, sin ser por sí mismos inconsistentes, corresponden al tipo de ficcion2 y ficción3. Finalmente, se concluye que Leibniz está más preocupado por la imposibilidad por incompatibilidad con principios arquitectónicos que por la cuestión de la irrepresentabilidad geométrica.

The controversy between Leibniz and Malebranche regarding the relationship between substances is addressed. Four hypotheses are proposed to explain this interaction: physical influence (scholasticism), immediate divine assistance (occasionalism, Malebranche), identity (Spinoza), and prior harmony (Leibniz). Leibniz's critical position regarding the other three hypotheses is explained. Regarding the first hypothesis, Leibniz and Malebranche agree that it is not viable. Leibniz's critique of Malebranche's occasionalism (second hypothesis) and Spinoza's substantialist monism (third hypothesis) are explained. And finally it is analyzed, from the hypothesis of prior harmony (fourth hypothesis), the way in which Leibniz takes advantage of the dispute with occasionalism, both in Malebranche's version and in Pierre Bayle's, to claim the autonomy of reason in the field of second causes. The notion of the nature of things, the principle of diversity and the principle of sufficient reason play a fundamental role in this., Se aborda la polémica entre Leibniz y Malebranche en torno a la relación entre las sustancias. Se plantean cuatro hipótesis para explicar esta interacción: la influencia física (escolástica), la asistencia divina inmediata (ocasionalismo, Malebranche), la identidad (Spinoza) y la armonía previa (Leibniz). Se explica la posición crítica de Leibniz respecto a las otras tres. En relación con la primera hipótesis Leibniz y Malebranche están de acuerdo en que no es viable. Se explican la crítica de Leibniz al ocasionalismo de Malebranche (segunda hipótesis) y al monismo sustancialista de Spinoza (tercera hipótesis). Y finalmente se analiza, desde la hipótesis de la armonía previa (cuarta hipótesis), el modo en que Leibniz aprovecha la disputa con el ocasionalismo, tanto en la versión de Malebranche como en la de Pierre Bayle, para reivindicar la autonomía de la razón en el ámbito de las causas segundas. En ello juegan un papel fundamental la noción de naturaleza de las cosas, el principio de diversidad y el principio de razón suficiente.

The problem of evil has tormented human beings since time immemorial. Therefore, reflections on this question and its compatibility with the existence of an almighty, omniscient and good God have always been a part of our human existence, especially in the Judaeo-Christian world. Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas, among others, contributed to the building of a philosophicotheological response to that question that was considered for a long time as a proposal that, even though it didn´t solve the problem entirely, at least shed light on it. However, after Kant, many thinkers have radically rejected the possibility of a theodicy, conceived as a speculative reflection of a metaphysical basis for the problem of evil and its relation to God. In this rejection, whose main object is the Leibnizian justification of divine innocence, are often included other responses like the Augustinian position. This essay tries to analyze both stances in order to reach a conclusion, in the light of the traits that Ricoeur considers as essential to every theodicy, as long as the objections commonly posed to Leibniz, also affect the Augustinian approach., El problema del mal ha atormentado al ser humano desde tiempo inmemorial. De ahí que las reflexiones acerca de dicha cuestión y su compatibilidad o no con la existencia de un Dios todopoderoso, omnisciente y bueno no hayan dejado nunca de acompañarlo, especialmente en el mundo judeocristiano. San Agustín y Santo Tomás, entre otros, contribuyeron a forjar una respuesta filosófico-teológica a la cuestión, que se mantuvo durante mucho tiempo como una luz que, si bien no la esclarecía por entero, se creía al menos que la iluminaba suficientemente. Sin embargo, después de Kant, muchos han rechazado radicalmente la posibilidad de la teodicea, concebida como reflexión especulativa de base metafísica acerca del problema del mal y su relación con Dios. En ese rechazo, dirigido especialmente a la justificación leibniciana de la inocencia divina, a menudo se incluyen también otras respuestas como la del propio San Agustín. Este trabajo se propone analizar ambas posturas para concluir, a la luz de los rasgos que Ricoeur cree esenciales en toda teodicea, si aquello de lo que suele acusarse a Leibniz afecta también a la posición agustiniana.

The question of “why there is someone rather than no one” compels us to revisit Leibniz’squestion of “why there is something rather than nothing”, as implied by his principle of sufficientreason, full determination, and trust it provides. 1) We will pursue that implication in some detailuntil we arrive at the dimension that Leibniz attributes to someone, and this someone’s propertieswithin his system. 2) On the basis of a succint historical consideration that contrasts Descartes with theNeoplatonic background (animism), and reviews Spinoza’s reaction (monism and immanentism) to hispredecessor (dualism), I will attempt to illustrate Leibniz’s (transcendent) position on the question thatguides us. 3) But the question is still pertinent today, vis à-vis certain positions—naturalism or nihilism,for example—that would contend that there is no one rather than someone. 4) To this end, we will assessthe extent to which Leibniz helps us, on the one hand, and, on the other, just how far we ought to strayfrom him, or from a traditional interpretation of his concept of reason., La cuestión de ‘Por qué hay alguien más bien que nadie?’ obliga a retomar la que indaga por qué hay algo y no más bien nada, que debemos a Leibniz y que implica su principio de razón suficiente, la completa determinación y la confianza que ello provee. 1) Perseguiremos esa implicación con cierto detalle hasta lograr la dimensión que Leibniz le otorga aalguien y sus propiedades en su sistema. 2) Mediante una sucinta consideración histórica a partir del contraste de Descartes con el trasfondo neoplatónico (animismo), y un recuento de la reacción de Spinoza (monismo e inmanentismo) frente a su predecesor (dualismo), intentaré ilustrar la postura de Leibniz (trascendente) respecto de la pregunta que nos orienta. 3) Pero la pregunta es pertinente todavía hoy frente a posturas que apostarían a que más bien >nadie que alguien, tales como el naturalismo o el nihilismo, 4) para lo cual finalmente valoraremos cuánto nos ayuda Leibniz, y qué tanto hemos de apartarnos de él, o de una tradicional interpretación de su concepto de razón.

The language of the early calculus was much more geometrical than the analytic and algebraic style that was pioneered by Euler and still dominates today. For instance, functions such as sin(x) and log(x) were largely absent from the early calculus, with geometric paraphrases used in their place. From a modern standpoint, one may be inclined to assume that the eventual triumph of the more analytic perspective was a straightforward case of progress, and that the geometric aspects of the early calculus were a historical artifact ultimately hampering this development. Interestingly, however, in private notes, the pioneers of the calculus showed a readiness to disregard traditionalism and operate freely in a more proto-modern style than they allowed themselves in their publications. This suggests that the adherence to the geometrical mode in published works was a deliberate choice selected with full awareness of the analytic alternative. Indeed, the geometrical paradigm was no mere blind conservatism or lip service to classical foundations; rather, it arguably had genuine merits, for example, as an intuition-boosting heuristic strategy. This aspect of the early calculus can serve as a case study that illuminates the relation between official expression and informal thought in mathematics more generally. For one thing, it complicates the common historiographic assumption that fidelity to historical thought is best achieved by following the original text’s mode of expression as closely as possible.

In this dissertation, I analyze the distinction between different types of infinity that Leibniz identifies throughout his philosophical and mathematical works. By attending to these differences, I show how Leibniz’s rejection of infinite number as a contradictory notion does not entail the impossibility of infinitely small lines. Chapter 1 explains the differences between three grades of infinity that Leibniz identifies in a 1676 taxonomy on the infinite and how this taxonomy was an attempt to avoid paradoxes of the infinite. It also contains a description of a separate taxonomy of the infinite that Leibniz gave in 1706, in which Leibniz explicitly bans any type of infinity that is a whole composed of infinity many distinct parts. Chapter 2 treats five places where infinity lines arise in Leibniz’s mathematics: infinite number, the composition of the continuum, infinite series, infinitesimals and their bounded infinite counterparts, and unbounded infinite lines. Looking at the different ways Leibniz evaluates each of these concepts, we see that infinitesimals and bounded infinite lines stand on firmer conceptual footing then the others from Leibniz’s point of view. Chapter 3 argues that Leibniz’s claims that infinitesimals are “fictions” or “impossible,” this is in reference to a specific type of impossibility that he calls the impossible per accidens. Unlike the absolutely impossible, this type of impossibility is not rooted in contradiction, but conflict with metaphysical principles that bar their existence in the order of created things. Hence, Leibniz’s stance towards infinitesimals allows them to be perfectly coherent entities for the purposes of geometric reasoning, despite his ban on their existence within the physical world.
