Objectives. To describe prevalence of breast milk feeding among people with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy and examine associations between breast milk feeding, timing of maternal infection before delivery, and rooming-in status during delivery hospitalization. Methods. We performed a retrospective cohort study using data from Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee of whether people with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy in 2020 initiated breast milk feeding at birth. Results. Among 11 114 (weighted number) people with SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy, 86.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 82.4%, 87.6%) initiated breast milk feeding during birth hospitalization. People with infection within 14 days before delivery had significantly lower prevalence of breast milk feeding (adjusted prevalence ratio [APR] = 0.88; 95% CI = 0.83, 0.94) than did those with infection at least 14 days before delivery. When stratified by rooming-in status, the association between timing of infection and breast milk feeding remained only among infants who did not room in with their mother (APR = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.68, 0.88). Conclusions. Pregnant and postpartum people with SARS-CoV-2 infection should have access to lactation support and be advised about the importance of breast milk feeding and how to safely feed their infants in the same room. O presente texto discute as contribuições do artigo A América Latina na encruzilhada do tempo presente, de Muniz Ferreira, que traça um percurso histórico da América Latina dos anos 1930 até os dias de hoje, constantemente sublinhando as tensões entre as forças dominantes (neo)liberais e conservadoras e as forças progressistas e discutindo a situação sócio-econômico-política na maioria dos países da região. Na primeira parte do texto, dialogamos diretamente com as ideias de Ferreira, acrescentando, onde possível, outras observações complementares às suas análises. Na segunda parte, criamos em diálogo entre Ferreira (2022) e Butler ([2015] 2018; [2009] 2015), com base em um problema que ambos/as confrontam em suas escritas: a dificuldade de fazer com que as pessoas reconheçam as condições que têm em comum, apesar de suas diferenças, para fazer atuação política conjunta em prol de melhorias permanentes em suas condições de vida.

Postevent processing (PEP), the engagement in detailed and repetitive self-focused review of one’s performance in social situations, is theorized to maintain pathological social anxiety. However, little is known about interventions that may impact this maintenance factor. The current study examined the impact of brief mindfulness training (BMT) on PEP among socially anxious individuals. There were 77 participants (75.32% female, 63.64% non-Hispanic/Latinx White) with clinically elevated social anxiety who attended one appointment in the laboratory during which they were randomized to receive a brief mindfulness-based training (n = 37) or no training (i.e., thinking as usual control group; n = 40). After the training period, participants underwent a 3-minute social anxiety induction task, after which they were instructed to apply their thinking strategy. Participants were then asked to complete 2 weeks of daily online surveys that included a PEP induction task, instructions to use their thinking strategy following PEP induction, and a measure of state PEP. Individuals in the BMT condition reported a significant reduction in state anxiety posttraining compared to individuals in the control condition. Conditions did not differ on state PEP after the social anxiety induction task. However, compared to those in the control condition, participants in the BMT condition reported significantly greater decreases in state PEP over the 14-day follow-up period. Thus, this brief mindfulness-based strategy may be useful for individuals with clinically elevated social anxiety who engage in PEP, a cognitive vulnerability factor implicated in the maintenance of social anxiety.

Despite experiencing problems related to using cannabis, very few undergraduate cannabis users are interested in treatment for cannabis-related problems or benefit from cannabis-focused online personalized feedback interventions (PFIs). Thus, it may be important to determine whether individuals perceive their problems as distressing, as only those who are distressed by their problems may be motivated to change their cannabis use or benefit from cannabis-related interventions. The current study examined cannabis-related problem distress, its relation to motivation to change cannabis use, and whether problem distress impacted outcomes of a problem-focused online PFI. Past-month cannabis-using undergraduates who endorsed experiencing at least one cannabis-related problem in the past 3 months were randomized to a PFI (n = 102) or a personalized normative feedback (PNF)-only condition (n = 102). Problem distress was robustly related to readiness, importance, and confidence to change cannabis use at baseline. Among those with high levels of problem distress at baseline, those in the PFI condition reported a greater decrease in problems than those in the PNF-only condition. This was not the case among those with lower levels of problem distress. Further, the number of cannabis-related problems did not moderate intervention outcomes. Cannabis users who perceive their problems as more distressing may be more motivated to change their cannabis use and more likely to benefit from a problem-focused PFI relative to a PNF-only intervention. Results have implications for the personalization of cannabis-focused interventions to maximize the impacts of interventions and decrease cannabis-related problems. Throughout its history, New York has received several archaeological objects as gifts, including a mid-fourth-century BCE Greek funerary stele. Dr John Huston Finley, the third president of City College, saw a stele when he was in Greece and asked the Greek Government to gift the stele to the college. The stele, dubbed the ‘Marathon Stone’ by Finley, was dedicated and proudly displayed at City College, now of the City University of New York. This article explores the gift’s context by drawing on contemporary newspaper reports, Finley’s tenuous association of the stele with the battle of Marathon, and the gifting of an archaeological object as a means for promoting ties between City College and Greece. The article then examines the context for the stele’s display, the Neo-Antique Lewisohn Stadium, and argues that the display of the stele and erection of Lewisohn Stadium both embodied Finley’s aspirations for City College to rival Columbia and New York Universities. The demise of the stadium in 1973 and the removal of the stele to a basement signaled a major shift in the significance of the classics, classical art, and Neo-Antique architecture at City College, as well as the changing priorities of the institution.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly facilitates controlled coatings on a variety of surfaces with the ability to manipulate the composition through the thickness by selection of the complementary pairs. However, the characterization of these composition profiles tends to be destructive and requires significant compositional differences that can limit their utility. Here, we demonstrate the ability to non-destructively quantify the depth dependence of the allyl content associated with the selective incorporation of poly(sodium acrylate-co-allylacrylamide) (84 : 16 mol : mol) (allyl-PAA) in LbL films based on the assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and PDAC/allyl-PAA. Although the atomic composition of the film is not dramatically influenced by the change between PAA and allyl-PAA, the absorption in the IR near 1645 cm−1 by the allyl group provides sufficient optical contrast to distinguish the LbL components with spectroscopic ellipsometry. The use of IR spectroscopic ellipsometry can determine the thickness of layers that contain allyl-PAA and also gradients that develop due to re-arrangements during the LbL process. With multiple films fabricated simultaneously, the location of the gradient between the 1st and 2nd series of multilayers (e.g., first PDAC/PAA bilayers and then PDAC/allyl-PAA bilayers) can be readily assessed. The results from a variety of different multilayer architectures indicate that the gradient is located within the thickness expected for the 1st deposited bilayer stack (PDAC/PAA or PDAC/allyl-PAA). These results are indicative of a dynamic dissolution–deposition process (in- and out- diffusion) during the fabrication of these LbL films. These results provide additional evidence into the mechanisms for exponential growth in LbL assemblies. The ability to quantify a gradient with the low contrast system examined indicates that spectroscopic IR ellipsometry should be able to non-destructively determine compositional gradients for most polymer films where such gradients exist.

Summary: Volatile short-chain fatty acids such as butyric and acetic acid have been supplemented in poultry rations as a feed ingredient and nutritive supplement. A novel Clostridium fermentation solubles broth (MiruTyton), containing short-chain fatty acids, minerals, and amino acids, was supplemented in a standard corn/soybean meal–based ration at a rate of 750, 1,500, 3,000, and 6,000 mg/kg to achieve approximately 277, 554, 1,108, and 2,216 mg/kg of ammonium butyrate in the diet. After 6 wk, supplementation at all levels did not cause significant changes in the blood parameters or any live performance metric of mixed-sex Cobb-500 broilers (N = 1,920). Research suggests that individuals may benefit from participation in a partial hospital program (PHP) following discharge from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Indeed, PHPs are designed to facilitate further stabilization and skill-building before discharge to the community. As a result, our hospital-located in a large metropolitan area in the Northeastern United States-has long maintained a commitment to providing this critical level of care. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, these in-person PHP services were discontinued in response to public health recommendations and to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff. To maintain this important point along the psychiatric care continuum, hospital leadership encouraged our PHP team to pursue an alternative approach to treatment delivery: video-based telepsychotherapy. This article describes the development of a virtual PHP that serves acute psychiatric patients stepping down from inpatient hospitalization. First, we provide an overview of the original in-person PHP and then discuss the process of its transition to a virtual format. Next, we describe in detail the components of our newly developed virtual PHP, highlighting adaptations necessitated by patients and staff being remote from our physical hospital. Finally, we present preliminary evidence of our virtual PHP's acceptability and feasibility, based on experiences with our 23 patients to date; discuss lessons learned from this program development effort; and recommend future directions for research and clinical practice. Information provided herein aims to guide the development of other virtual PHPs and telepsychotherapy programs that similarly strive to offer intensive treatment to an acute psychiatric population.

Smokers with elevated anxiety sensitivity (AS) have poorer smoking cessation outcomes. Smokers with elevated anxiety/depression report worse smoking cessation outcomes and greater AS. Thus, it is important to examine the utility of intervention strategies that target AS in the context of smoking cessation. Hatha yoga encourages the implementation of present-centered awareness in the face of discomfort, which may be a potential therapeutic strategy to reduce AS. The current study examines the impact of hatha yoga on AS among 51 smokers. Participants were randomly assigned to hatha yoga or wellness control on their quit/reduce smoking day. Compared to the control, the yoga condition reported significantly less AS at one-week follow-up. This relationship was moderated by baseline anxiety/depression, such that among individuals with elevated anxiety/depression, yoga was related to less AS than the control. Hatha yoga may serve as an additional strategy for successful smoking cessation in individuals with high AS.

Survival for patients with high-risk neuroblastoma (HRNB) remains poor despite aggressive multimodal therapies.To study the feasibility and safety of incorporating a genomic-based targeted agent to induction therapy for HRNB as well as the feasibility and safety of adding difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) to anti-GD2 immunotherapy.Twenty newly diagnosed HRNB patients were treated on this multicenter pilot trial. Molecular tumor boards selected one of six targeted agents based on tumor-normal whole exome sequencing and tumor RNA-sequencing results. Treatment followed standard upfront HRNB chemotherapy with the addition of the selected targeted agent to cycles 3-6 of induction. Following consolidation, DFMO (750 mg/mOf the 20 subjects enrolled, 19 started targeted therapy during cycle 3 and 1 started during cycle 5. Eighty-five percent of subjects met feasibility criteria (receiving 75% of targeted agent doses). Addition of targeted agents did not result in toxicities requiring dose reduction of chemotherapy or permanent discontinuation of targeted agent. Following standard consolidation, 15 subjects continued onto immunotherapy with DFMO. This combination was well-tolerated and resulted in no unexpected adverse events related to DFMO.This study demonstrates the safety and feasibility of adding targeted agents to standard induction therapy and adding DFMO to immunotherapy for HRNB. This treatment regimen has been expanded to a Phase II trial to evaluate efficacy.

Objective To describe prevalence of breastmilk feeding among people with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and examine associations between breastmilk feeding, timing of maternal infection before delivery, and rooming-in status during delivery hospitalization. Methods Retrospective cohort using data from five states reporting initiation of breastmilk feeding of infants at birth among people with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy in 2020. Results Among 9760 (weighted N) people with SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy, 86.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 83.3%-88.7%) initiated breastmilk feeding during birth hospitalization. People with infection ≤ 14 days before delivery had significantly lower prevalence of breastmilk feeding (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 0.90, 95% CI: 0.82, 0.97) compared to those with infection > 14 days before delivery. When stratified by rooming-in status, the association between timing of infection and breastmilk feeding remained only among infants who did not room-in with their mother (aPR 0.78, 95% CI: 0.66, 0.92). Conclusion Pregnant and postpartum people with SARS-CoV-2 infection should be advised about the importance of breastmilk feeding, how to safely feed their infants in the same room, and have access to lactation support.

Microbial proteins are potentially important alternatives to animal protein. A safety assessment was conducted on a Clostridium protein which can serve as a high-quality protein source in human food. A battery of toxicity studies was conducted comprising a 14-day dose-range finding dietary study in rats, 90-day dietary study in rats and in vitro genotoxicity studies. The allergenic potential was investigated by bioinformatics analysis. In the 90-day feeding study, rats were fed diets containing 0, 5.0, 7.5, and 10% Clostridium protein. The Clostridium protein-containing diets were well-tolerated and no adverse effects on the health or growth were observed. Significant reductions in neutrophil counts were observed in all female rats compared to controls, which were slightly outside of reference ranges. These effects were not deemed to be adverse due to the absence of comparable findings in male rats and high physiological variability of measured values within groups. A No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) of at least 10% Clostridium protein, the highest dose tested and corresponding to 5,558 and 6,671 mg/kg body weight/day for male and female rats, respectively, was established. No evidence of genotoxicity was observed and the allergenic potential was low. These results support the use of Clostridium protein as a food ingredient.

Onondaga Lake in central New York State was listed as a Superfund site in 1994 due to industrial disposal of pollutants. A biomonitoring program was conducted to assess exposure to over 70 legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern in populations disproportionately at risk for exposure residing near Onondaga Lake and to educate these communities on how to reduce exposures. The populations of focus were refugees from Burma and Bhutan and low-income, primarily African American, anglers (urban anglers). These communities consume locally caught fish for economic as well as cultural reasons and therefore may be at higher risk of exposure. This study focuses on assessment of exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and associations with local fish consumption. Using respondent driven sampling, 311 refugees and 89 urban anglers were enrolled in the study. Following informed consent, study participants provided blood and urine specimens and completed a questionnaire. Percentiles of locally caught fish meals in the past 12 months by race/ethnicity groups showed that the Burmese participants of Karen ethnicity were the highest consumers, with a median of 135 meals compared to 103 meals for the other Burmese participants, 70 meals for the urban anglers, and 44 meals for the Bhutanese participants. Compared to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015–16 sample of the general U.S. population, the Karen participants had markedly elevated perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) levels with median serum concentrations 9.5 times greater (41.6 ng/mL vs. 4.4 ng/mL) and 26.9 times greater (2.69 ng/mL vs. 0.10 ng/mL), respectively; the other Burmese participants had moderately elevated levels of PFOS and PFDA with median serum concentrations 3.0 times greater (13.3 ng/mL vs. 4.4 ng/mL) and 7.3 greater times greater (0.73 ng/mL vs. 0.10 ng/mL), respectively; and, PFAS levels were not elevated in the Bhutanese or urban angler cohorts. Male gender was consistently the strongest predictor of PFAS exposure among all study cohorts. A positive association between local fish consumption was indicated only for PFOS among urban anglers. An association between local fish consumption and PFAS was not statistically significant among the refugee cohorts, perhaps due to the lack of ‘lower-end’ exposure or exposure variability. Community events were held by the program staff to present the biomonitoring results and distribute community outreach materials with visual aids specific for the study populations to promote safe fish eating.

The bacterial DNA damage response pathway (SOS response) is composed of a network of genes regulated by a single transcriptional repressor, LexA. The lexA promoter, itself, contains two LexA operators, enabling negative feedback. In Escherichia coli, the downstream operator contains a conserved DNA cytosine methyltransferase (Dcm) site that is predicted to be methylated to 5-methylcytosine (5mC) specifically during stationary phase growth, suggesting a regulatory role for DNA methylation in the SOS response. To test this, we quantified 5mC at the lexA locus, and then examined the effect of LexA on Dcm activity, as well as the impact of this 5mC mark on LexA binding, lexA transcription, and SOS response induction. We found that 5mC at the lexA promoter is specific to stationary phase growth, but that it does not affect lexA expression. Our data support a model where LexA binding at the promoter inhibits Dcm activity without an effect on the SOS regulon.

The current paper presents a biopsychosocial model of cannabis use and anxiety that focuses explicitly on aspects of anxiety that may contribute to cannabis use and use-related problems among individuals with elevated anxiety. Elevated anxiety and anxiety disorders are common among individuals who use cannabis and those with cannabis use disorder (CUD). One possible explanation for this co-occurrence may be that symptoms associated with anxiety disorders (i.e., physiological arousal, subjective anxiety, and avoidance) may place anxious individuals at risk of using cannabis to cope with these symptoms. A review of the literature on the relationships between facets of anxiety and cannabis use and related problems partially supports the utility of this model and informs future directions for research and treatment in this area.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals with elevated social anxiety are thought to be at high risk for developing cannabis-related problems because they use cannabis to cope with anxiety-provoking social situations. Social anxiety is unique among the anxiety conditions in that it is characterized by both elevated negative affect (NA) and lower positive affect (PA). Yet it is unclear whether persons with elevated social anxiety use cannabis to decrease their NA or to increase their PA. METHODS: Thus, the current study examined the role of PA and NA (including cannabis use to increase PA and to decrease NA in social situations) on cannabis use frequency and related problems among current (past three-month) cannabis users (N = 278). RESULTS: Social anxiety was significantly correlated with NA, PA, cannabis use to decrease NA, and use to increase PA. Serial mediation analyses tested the paths between social anxiety, affect, use to manage affect, typical cannabis use frequency, and cannabis use-related problems. Contrary to prediction, social anxiety was not indirectly related to use frequency or related problems via NA or PA generally. Rather, social anxiety was indirectly related to cannabis problems via the serial effect of use to cope with NA and typical use frequency and via the serial effect of use to increase PA and typical use frequency. CONCLUSIONS/IMPORTANCE: Social anxiety may be associated with using cannabis to decrease NA and increase PA specifically in social situations, which increases cannabis use frequency and thus, problem risk.

Polymer membranes represent a low cost, low energy solution to separating biologically derived chemicals from fermentation. However, the performance of these membranes is commonly limited by fouling caused by biological components, but additives are also included in typical fermentation broths that can interact with the polymer membrane. Here, we examine how a common polyol antifoam agent (Antifoam 204) dramatically swells and plasticizes a high performing biobutanol membrane copolymer of hydroxyhexafluoroisopropyl and n-butyl substituted norbornene. When equilibrated against 1 wt % (aq) butanol, the solvent in the copolymer increases from 40 vol % at 1 ppm of antifoam and >80 vol % at 100 ppm of antifoam. The effect of the antifoam on the properties of the copolymer as determined by QCM-D is much more significant than that of the butanol concentration. Even with 4 wt % butanol (greater than typically viable for biobutanol), the copolymer swells

Smokers suffer from high rates of anxiety disorders, presumably because some individuals with anxiety disorders rely on smoking as a maladaptive attempt to manage anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious smoking cessation treatment, yet outcomes are worse for patients with elevated anxiety. The integration of CBT for smoking cessation with False Safety Behavior Elimination Therapy (FSET) may be useful with anxious smoking cessation patients, as smoking to manage anxiety and associated negative affect can be targeted as a false safety behavior (i.e., behavior aimed at decreasing anxiety in the short-term but which may maintain or exacerbate it in the long-term). Here, we describe the integrated treatment, Treatment for Anxiety and Smoking Cessation (TASC), and the successful use of it with two smoking cessation patients—one with comorbid generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and one with clinically elevated social anxiety that did not meet diagnostic threshold for an anxiety disorder. Data support the feasibility of TASC as a viable approach to smoking cessation treatment for patients with comorbid anxiety disorder and with elevated anxiety that does not meet diagnostic threshold. Future controlled trials are now warranted to further evaluate the intervention.

BACKGROUND: Socially anxious individuals seem to be at a high risk for alcohol-related problems because they drink to cope. Yet social anxiety is unique among the anxiety conditions in that it is characterized by lower positive affect (PA). It is unclear whether drinking to cope is related to drinking to decrease negative affect (NA) or increase PA. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether social anxiety was related to more drinking problems via the sequential relations between affect (NA or PA), drinking to change affect (decrease NA or increase PA), and drinking quantity. We also tested whether the indirect effect of drinking to increase PA was significantly less than that of drinking to decrease NA. METHODS: Past-month drinkers with clinically elevated social anxiety (n = 174) and those with more normative or lower social anxiety (n = 362) completed an online survey. RESULTS: Social anxiety was indirectly related to drinking problems via the sequential effect of NA, drinking to decrease NA, and drinking quantity. Social anxiety was indirectly related to drinking problems via the sequential relations of PA and drinking quantity and of drinking to increase PA and drinking quantity. The indirect effect of drinking to increase PA did not significantly differ from drinking to decrease NA. CONCLUSIONS/IMPORTANCE: Socially anxious drinkers may drink not only to decrease NA but to increase PA in social situations. Both of these drinking motives appear to play important roles in socially anxious drinkers’ experience of drinking-related problems.

OBJECTIVE: Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) is a suicide-specific, episodic clinical entity that is theorized to characterize acute suicide risk. Little work has examined the role of ASAD in mental health conditions linked to suicide risk. Thus, the current study examined whether depression, social anxiety, panic, and alcohol-related problems were related to suicide risk via ASAD history. METHODS: 527 undergraduates completed an online survey. RESULTS: Depression, social anxiety, and alcohol problem risk (but not panic) were robustly, significantly related to suicide risk, but only social anxiety and depression were robustly related to ASAD history. Depression and social anxiety symptoms were indirectly related to suicide risk via ASAD. CONCLUSION: ASAD may serve as potential explanatory pathway through which some mental health conditions may lead to greater suicide risk.

To review data published in the past 5 years to evaluate the utility of our biopsychosocial model of social anxiety’s relation to substance misuse to evaluate the model’s utility and update it. Data support the utility of our revised model—e.g., socially anxious persons report using substances to manage subjective anxiety, despite evidence that some substances may not have a direct effect on physiological responding. Other factors with promise include social influence, cognitive processes (e.g., post-event processing), and avoidance. Data highlight the importance of context as socially anxious persons use some substances more in some high-risk situations, despite lack of relation between social anxiety and use generally. Sociocultural factors remain understudied. This updated model is a theory- and data-driven model of the relations between social anxiety and substance misuse that can inform future work to improve substance-related outcomes among this especially vulnerable group.

College cannabis use continues to rise, yet few students voluntarily seek treatment for cannabis use, despite use-related problems. Thus, the campus judicial system may be one way to identify high-risk cannabis users and intervene with them. Despite research indicating that brief motivational interventions (BMIs) decrease risky alcohol use among students sanctioned for psychological services following campus alcohol policies violations, extant data do not support BMI for students who violate cannabis polices. Thus, the aims of this review paper are to (a) review the extant literature of BMI for cannabis use among sanctioned students, (b) discuss some unique issues concerning BMI for cannabis use, and (c) provide case examples of promising novel ways BMI may be used to address unique needs of these students. Given the wide range of cannabis use and related problems experienced by these students, personalized approaches to BMI-based interventions may improve outcomes for these students.

In Escherichia coli, SOS-induced mutations are caused by the translesion synthesis (TLS) activity of two error-prone polymerases (EPPs), Pol IV and Pol V. The mutational footprint of the EPPs is confounded by both DNA damage and repair, as mutations are targeted to DNA lesions via TLS and corrected by the mismatch repair (MMR) system. To remove these factors and assess untargeted EPP mutations genome-wide, we constructed spontaneous SOS mutator strains deficient in MMR, then analyzed their mutational footprints by mutation accumulation and whole genome sequencing. Our analysis reveals new features of untargeted SOS-mutagenesis, showing how MMR alters its spectrum, sequence specificity, and strand-bias. Our data support a model where the EPPs prefer to act on the lagging strand of the replication fork, producing base pair mismatches that are differentially repaired by MMR depending on the type of mismatch.

To review data published in the past 5 years to evaluate the utility of our biopsychosocial model of social anxiety's relation to substance misuse to evaluate the model's utility and update it.Data support the utility of our revised model-e.g., socially anxious persons report using substances to manage subjective anxiety, despite evidence that some substances may not have a direct effect on physiological responding. Other factors with promise include social influence, cognitive processes (e.g., post-event processing), and avoidance. Data highlight the importance of context as socially anxious persons use some substances more in some high-risk situations, despite lack of relation between social anxiety and use generally. Sociocultural factors remain understudied. This updated model is a theory- and data-driven model of the relations between social anxiety and substance misuse that can inform future work to improve substance-related outcomes among this especially vulnerable group.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has contributed to thousands of hospitalizations and deaths worldwide. Although alcohol use has increased in response to the pandemic, no known studies have identified transdiagnostic risk factors for greater drinking in response to COVID-related distress. Individuals with more difficulty with emotion regulation may drink more during the pandemic to manage pandemic-related distress. The current study tested whether difficulty with emotion regulation was related to greater estimated blood alcohol content (eBAC) during a typical week in the past month and if this was due to COVID-related distress and drinking to cope with the pandemic. The sample consisted of 347 past-month drinking undergraduates in Louisiana, a state with some of the U.S. highest rates of COVID-19 infections and related deaths. Difficulty with engaging in goal-directed behaviors was related to greater past-month eBAC and this relation was mediated by the sequential effects of COVID-related worry and drinking to cope with the pandemic. Results indicate that individuals with difficulty engaging in goal-directed behaviors are especially vulnerable to greater eBAC during the COVID-19 pandemic which may be due in part to their vulnerability to more COVID-related worry which may lead to more drinking to cope with the pandemic.

Objective: Nonanoic acid (NA) is one of a series of straight-chain aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, acids and their derivatives with a well-documented history of use as a synthetic flavoring in human food. As part of a safety evaluation of NA for use as a flavoring in animal feed, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the ability of turkeys to tolerate NA at levels relevant to practical feeding practices. Materials and Methods: A total of 594-day-old BUT Premium turkeys (300 males and 294 females) were allocated at random to 40 floor pens containing either 15 males or 13 to 15 females. Poults were fed one of 4 treatment diets in crumble (0 to 14 days) or pellet (15 to 59 days) form containing 0 (control), 100, 300 or 1000 mg NA/kg complete feed for 59 days. General health and performance were monitored for the duration of the study. At days 57 and 59 of age, blood samples were taken and birds were sacrificed and necropsied for histopathological examination of the digestive tract. Significant differences were considered at P ≤ 0.05 and near-significant trends at P ≤ 0.10. Results: NA had no effect on mortality (Pχ2 = 0.54), average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P = 0.11), average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.12) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P = 0.45) in poults over the 56-day feeding period. No treatment-related effects on blood parameters or tissue pathology were observed. Conclusion: The results of the study support the safety and tolerance of NA to turkeys at dietary levels of up to 1000 mg/kg which will provide a considerable margin of safety compared to anticipated practical conditions of use as a feed flavoring. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Major depressive disorder is among the most common psychiatric disorders globally and is a leading cause of impaired functioning and psychiatric hospitalization. One setting to which individuals with major depressive disorder may present for treatment is a partial hospital program (PHP). PHPs represent a surprisingly feasible and effective environment in which depression symptoms can be therapeutically impacted. In this chapter, we discuss how basic components of evidence-based treatment for depression can be incorporated into a PHP to facilitate significant treatment gains and reductions in depression symptom severity in a short-term treatment model. We briefly review gold-standard depression treatment approaches largely informed by cognitive behavioral therapy principles and demonstrate through vignettes how they can be administered in a PHP setting, drawing on our experiences at McLean Hospital’s Behavioral Health Partial Hospital Program (BHP) in the United States (US). We discuss how PHPs not only provide vital clinical treatment but also can integrate research and clinical training to advance the mental health field.

Our objective is to make a first attempt at outlining a Cu(-ir) Linguistics, based on criticisms of Queer Studies and observations about Queer Linguistics. This attempt isn’t limited to a theoretical proposition; it shall be put into practice by way of two case studies involving discourses about discrimination related to the use of dildos: one about a bisexual woman and another about heterosexual men who enjoy being penetrated by their female partners. Through the analysis of these cases, focusing on subversions and reinforcements of heteronormative discourses, our Cu(-ir) Linguistics will attempt to fill gaps in research regarding specific desires and sexual practices, seeking to destabilize definitions of sexuality based on the gender of one’s partner(s)., Nuestro objetivo es hacer una primera tentativa de delinear una Lingüística Cu(-ir), a partir de unas críticas a los Estudios Queer y observaciones sobre la Lingüística Queer. Postmortem evaluations of two patients revealed the classical TDP-43 pathology of FTD/ALS, as well as huntingtin-positive, ubiquitin-positive aggregates in the frontal cortex. The neostriatal atrophy that pathologically defines Huntington?s disease was absent in both cases. Our findings reveal an etiological relationship between HTT repeat expansions and FTD/ALS syndromes and indicate that genetic screening of FTD/ALS patients for HTT repeat expansions should be considered. Zone annealing, a directional crystallization technique originally used for the purification of semiconductors, is applied here to crystalline polymers. Tight control over the final lamellar orientation and thickness of semicrystalline polymers can be obtained by directionally solidifying the material under optimal conditions. It has previously been postulated by Lovinger and Gryte that, at steady state, the crystal growth rate of a polymer undergoing zone annealing is equal to the velocity at which the sample is drawn through the temperature gradient. These researchers further implied that directional crystallization only occurs below a critical velocity, when crystal growth rate dominates over nucleation. Here, we perform an analysis of small-angle X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and cross-polarized optical microscopy of zone-annealed poly(ethylene oxide) to examine these conjectures. Our long period data validate the steady-state ansatz, while an analysis of Herman's orientation function confirms the existence of a transitional region around a critical velocity, v(crit), where there is a coexistence of oriented and isotropic domains. Below v(crit), directional crystallization is achieved, while above v(crit), the mechanism more closely resembles that of conventional isotropic isothermal crystallization. College cannabis users report using more cannabis during the weekend than on weekdays, yet little attention has been paid to the role of weekend and weekday-specific motives for use. The present investigation evaluated the impact of weekend and weekday-specific cannabis motives on cannabis use and related problems among current (past-3 month) cannabis using undergraduates (N = 276). Participants reported more cannabis use motives during the weekend than weekday. Enhancement and social motives were greater than coping, conformity, and expansion motives during weekends. Enhancement and conformity motives were indirectly related to problems via cannabis use frequency for both weekdays and weekends. Yet social, coping, and expansion motives were indirectly related to problems via cannabis use frequency for only weekdays. Findings support the differential impact of weekend and weekday-specific motives on cannabis use and related problems.

Over the past century, industrialization and urban practices have resulted in the contamination of the Great Lakes ecosystem—the world's largest surface freshwater system—that provides drinking water and recreation to more than 40 million residents. In 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes and surrounding areas. Funded by GLRI, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry initiated the Biomonitoring of Great Lakes Populations (BGLP) program. The objective of the program is to assess human exposure to legacy and emerging contaminants in the Great Lakes by measuring the body burden of contaminants in potentially susceptible populations. The BGLP program consists of a series of cross-sectional studies carried out collaboratively with states that are funded through ATSDR. The first BGLP Program (BGLP-I) began in 2010 and was completed in September 2015 through cooperative agreements with state health departments in Michigan, Minnesota, and New York. The three state programs targeted susceptible adult populations living in designated areas of contamination. Contaminants measured in all populations include mercury, lead, mirex, hexachlorobenzene, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, and selected polychlorinated biphenyl congeners. In addition, some chemicals of emerging concern, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were measured in several populations. The biomonitoring results helped guide public health actions to mitigate chemical exposures in these vulnerable Great Lakes populations. We provide an overview of the BGLP-I program's study populations, designs, and general methods. This overview provides a lead-in for subsequent manuscripts that present human biomonitoring data for legacy and emerging contaminants in culturally diverse susceptible populations—i.e., shoreline anglers, sport anglers, American Indians, and Burmese immigrants—residing in seven areas of concern.

Neuroblastoma is a sympathetic nervous system tumor, primarily presenting in children under 6 years of age. The long‐term prognosis for patients with high‐risk neuroblastoma (HRNB) remains poor despite aggressive multimodal therapy. This report provides an update to a phase II trial evaluating DFMO as maintenance therapy in HRNB. Event‐free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) of 81 subjects with HRNB treated with standard COG induction, consolidation and immunotherapy followed by 2 years of DFMO on the NMTRC003/003b Phase II trial were compared to a historical cohort of 76 HRNB patients treated at Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium (BCC) hospitals who were disease‐free after completion of standard upfront therapy and did not receive DFMO. The 2‐ and 5‐year EFS were 86.4% [95% confidence interval (CI) 79.3%‐94.2%] and 85.2% [77.8%‐93.3%] for the NMTRC003/003b subset vs 78.3% [69.5%‐88.3%] and 65.6% [55.5%‐77.5%] for the historical control group. The 2‐ and 5‐year OS were 98.8% [96.4‐100%] and 95.1% [90.5%‐99.9%] vs 94.4% [89.3%‐99.9%] and 81.6% [73.0%‐91.2%], respectively. DFMO maintenance for HRNB after completion of standard of care therapy was associated with improved EFS and OS relative to historical controls treated at the same institutions. These results support additional investigations into the potential role of DFMO in preventing relapse in HRNB., What's new? The long‐term prognosis for patients with high‐risk neuroblastoma (HRNB) remains poor despite aggressive multimodal therapy. This phase II clinical trial update is the first study to demonstrate statistically and clinically significant improvement in event‐free and overall survival in HRNB patients as a result of DFMO administration following standard upfront therapy relative to a closely matched historical control. The findings support DFMO maintenance as a novel strategy to prevent relapse in a high‐risk population for relapse following frontline treatment.

Between 2010 and 2015, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) conducted a biomonitoring program to gather exposure data on Great Lakes contaminants among licensed anglers and Burmese refugees living in western New York who ate locally caught fish. Four hundred and nine adult licensed anglers and 206 adult Burmese refugees participated in this program. Participants provided blood and urine samples and completed a detailed questionnaire. Herein, we present blood metal levels (cadmium, lead, and total mercury) and serum persistent organic pollutant concentrations [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and trans-nonachlor]. Multiple linear regression was applied to investigate the associations between analyte concentrations and indicators of fish consumption (locally caught fish meals, store-bought fish meals, and consuming fish/shellfish in the past week). Licensed anglers consumed a median of 16 locally caught fish meals and 22 store-bought fish meals while Burmese refugees consumed a median of 106 locally caught fish meals and 104 store-bought fish/shellfish meals in the past year. Compared to the general U.S. adult population, licensed anglers had higher blood lead and mercury levels; and Burmese refuges had higher blood cadmium, lead, and mercury, and higher serum DDE levels. Eating more locally caught fish was associated with higher blood lead, blood mercury, and serum ∑PCBs concentrations among licensed anglers. Licensed anglers and Burmese refugees who reported fish/shellfish consumption in the past week had elevated blood mercury levels compared with those who reported no consumption. Among licensed anglers, eating more store-bought fish meals was also associated with higher blood mercury levels. As part of the program, NYSDOH staff provided fish advisory outreach and education to all participants on ways to reduce their exposures, make healthier choices of fish to eat, and waters to fish from. Overall, our findings on exposure levels and fish consumption provide information to support the development and implementation of exposure reduction public health actions.

O presente artigo examina se, apesar de permitir maiores desconstruções e desnaturalizações das categorias de sexualidade que usamos hoje em dia, a Linguística Queer sofre de um dos problemas que afeta os Estudos Queer em geral: uma “norma homossexual oculta” (GUSTAVSON, 2009), ou priorização do estudo de homens gays. Embora a Linguística Queer tenha prestado maior atenção às performances discursivas de lésbicas, ainda há uma lacuna de pesquisas sobre performances de outras “orientações” sexuais e performances discursivas relacionadas a práticas sexuais que desestabilizam o binário heterossexual/homossexual. Portanto, pretende-se discutir alguns exemplos de estudos recentes realizados no campo da Linguística Queer que vão além da “norma oculta homossexual”: um sobre performances de mulheres bissexuais e outro sobre performances de adeptos/as da prática de pegging.

Axon degeneration occurs in all neurodegenerative diseases, but the molecular pathways regulating axon destruction during neurodegeneration are poorly understood. Sterile Alpha and TIR Motif Containing 1 (Sarm1) is an essential component of the prodegenerative pathway driving axon degeneration after axotomy and represents an appealing target for therapeutic intervention in neurological conditions involving axon loss. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by rapid, progressive motor neuron degeneration and muscle atrophy, causing paralysis and death. Patient tissue and animal models of ALS show destruction of upper and lower motor neuron cell bodies and loss of their associated axons. Here, we investigate whether loss of Sarm1 can mitigate motor neuron degeneration in the SOD1G93A mouse model of ALS. We found no change in survival, behavioral, electrophysiogical or histopathological outcomes in SOD1G93A mice null for Sarm1. Blocking Sarm1-mediated axon destruction alone is therefore not sufficient to suppress SOD1G93A-induced neurodegeneration. Our data suggest the molecular pathways driving axon loss in ALS may be Sarm1-independent or involve genetic pathways that act in a redundant fashion with Sarm1.

This study tested status-contingency theory and conversion theory on a task in which members made ordered judgments instead of dichotomous judgments. In groups, participants discussed whether “under God” should be in the pledge of allegiance and reached consensus on an ordered scale. Members’ contributions were scored for integrative complexity. In groups with more dispersion of opinion, members with opinions less discrepant from other group members did not have higher integrative complexity than members with more discrepancy of opinion, failing to support status-contingency theory for nondichotomous decisions. In support of conversion theory, members with more discrepant opinions were more influential when they had higher integrative complexity in their arguments. Replicating past research, groups with longer discussions had higher integrative complexity.
