Herein, conductive polymer membrane with excellent performance was successfully fabricated by integrating carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly (trans-3-(3-pyridyl) acrylic acid) (PPAA) film. The drop-casting method was employed to coated MWCNTs on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, and PPAA was then electropolymerized onto the surface of the MWCNTs/GCE in order to form PPAA-MWCNTs membrane. This enables the verification of the excellent performances of proposed membrane by electrochemically determining catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) as the model. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that the proposed membrane exhibited an obvious electrocatalytic effect on CC and HQ, owing to the synergistic effect of PPAA and MWCNTs. Differential pulse voltammetry was adopted for simultaneous detection purposes, and an increased electrochemical responded to CC and HQ. A concentration increase was found in the range of 1.0 × 10−6 mol/L~1.0 × 10−4 mol/L, and it exhibited a good linear relationship with satisfactory detection limits of 3.17 × 10−7 mol/L for CC and 2.03 × 10−7 mol/L for HQ (S/N = 3). Additionally, this constructed membrane showed good reproducibility and stability. The final electrode was successfully applied to analyze CC and HQ in actual water samples, and it obtained robust recovery for CC with 95.2% and 98.5%, and for HQ with 97.0% and 97.3%. Overall, the constructed membrane can potentially be a good candidate for constructing electrochemical sensors in environmental analysis.

This paper presents a novel nano-material composite membrane for detecting aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The membrane is based on carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) @ antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO)-chitosan (CS). To prepare the immunosensor, MWCNTs-COOH were dissolved in the CS solution, but some MWCNTs-COOH formed aggregates due to the intertwining of carbon nanotubes, blocking some pores. ATO was added to the solution containing MWCNTs-COOH, and the gaps were filled by adsorbing hydroxide radicals to form a more uniform film. This greatly increased the specific surface area of the formed film, resulting in a nano-composite film that was modified on screen-printed electrodes (SPCEs). The immunosensor was then constructed by immobilizing anti-AFB1 antibodies (Ab) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on an SPCE successively. The assembly process and effect of the immunosensor were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Under optimized conditions, the prepared immunosensor exhibited a low detection limit of 0.033 ng/mL with a linear range of 1 × 10−3–1 × 103 ng/mL. The immunosensor demonstrated good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. In summary, the results suggest that the MWCNTs-COOH@ATO-CS composite membrane can be used as an effective immunosensor for detecting AFB1.

In this proof-of-concept study, a novel hybrid nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensor was developed for the simultaneous detection of four DNA bases. For the modification of the working electrode surface, graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) were synthesized using a solvothermal method. GOQDs were then used for the preparation of a hybrid nanomaterial with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GOQD-MWCNT) using a solvothermal technique for the first time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the GOQDs-MWCNTs. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with the GOQDs-MWCNTs using Nafion™ to prepare a GOQD-MWCNT/GCE for the simultaneous determination of four DNA bases in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0) using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The calibration plots were linear up to 50, 50, 500, and 500 µM with a limit of detection at 0.44, 0.2, 1.6, and 5.6 µM for guanine (G), adenine (A), thymine (T) and cytosine (C), respectively. The hybrid-modified sensor was used for the determination of G, A, T, and C spiked in the artificial saliva samples with the recovery values ranging from 95.9 to 106.8%. This novel hybrid-modified electrochemical sensor provides a promising platform for the future development of a device for cost-effective and efficient simultaneous detection of DNA bases in real biological and environmental samples.

Glucose sensors based blood glucose detection are of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes because diabetes has aroused wide concern in the world. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used to cross-link glucose oxidase (GOD) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by a composite of hydroxy fullerene (HFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and protected with a glutaraldehyde (GLA)/Nafion (NF) composite membrane to prepare a novel glucose biosensor. The modified materials were analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The prepared MWCNTs-HFs composite has excellent conductivity, the addition of BSA regulates MWCNTs-HFs hydrophobicity and biocompatibility, and better immobilizes GOD on MWCNTs-HFs. MWCNTs-BSA-HFs plays a synergistic role in the electrochemical response to glucose. The biosensor shows high sensitivity (167 μA·mM−1·cm−2), wide calibration range (0.01–3.5 mM), and low detection limit (17 μM). The apparent Michaelis–Menten constant Kmapp is 119 μM. Additionally, the proposed biosensor has good selectivity and excellent storage stability (120 days). The practicability of the biosensor was evaluated in real plasma samples, and the recovery rate was satisfactory.

The need for Alpha2-Macroglobulin (α2-M) detection has increased because it plays an important role in the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, few sensors can realize the high-sensitive detection for α2-M with characteristics of being fast, flexible, wearable and portable. Herein, a biosensor based on a MnFe2O4@chitosan/MWCNTs/PDMS composite film was developed for α2-M detection. Due to the excellent magnetoelastic effect of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles, the stress signal of the biosensor surface induced by the specific antibody–antigen binding was transformed into the electrical and magnetic signal. Chitosan-coated MnFe2O4 particles were used to provide biological modification sites for the α2-M antibody, which simplified the conventional biological functionalization modification process. The MnFe2O4@chitosan particles were successfully prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method and the property was studied by TEM, FT-IR and XRD. MWCNTs were employed to enhance electrical conductivity and the sensitivity of the biosensor. The detection limit (LOD) was reduced to 0.1299 ng·mL−1 in the linear range from 10 ng∙mL−1 to 100 µg·mL−1, which was significantly lower than the limit of health diagnostics. The biosensor is fabricated by a simple method, with advantages of being rapid and highly-sensitive, and having selective detection of α2-M, which provides a novel method for the early diagnosis of DN, and it has potential in the point of care (PoC) field.

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), a type of inactive enzyme largely present in fish liver cells, is essential for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Monitoring ALT activity in the blood/hepatocellular layer has been demonstrated to be a sensitive sign of liver dysfunction and an essential method for determining the health status of fish. This study details the development of a multi-layer material (hybrids of graphene oxide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GO/MWCNTs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and glutamate oxidase (GluOx) enzyme) immobilized localized surface plasmon resonance based unique fiber structure biosensor for the quantitative determination of ALT biomolecules at concentrations ranging from 0 to 1000 U/L. For this kind of detection, a novel taper-in-taper with four tapered (TIT4T) structure based on single-mode fiber has been developed. In addition to AuNPs, GO/MWCNTs were immobilized in the probe's sensing region to increase its LSPR efficiency and sensitivity. Synthesis of AuNPs was carried out utilizing the Turkevich method. The selectivity of the sensor is ensured by the effective immobilization of GluOx on the surface treatment. The linearity of sensor is in the range of 0–1000 U/L, whereas the sensitivity, limit of detection, and detection time are individually found at 7.5 p.m./(U/L), 4.84 U/L and 20 min, respectively. After evaluating the prospective applications of the sensors, the sensors' reusability, reproducibility, stability, pH test, and selectivity have all been found to be satisfactory. Nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs) are widely used for drug delivery. One of the main challenges is to clarify their interaction with hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), the lack of which leads to oncological and cardiovascular diseases. In the presented study, N-MWCNTs were synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition and irradiated with argon ions. Their chemical state, local structure, interfaces, Stone–Wales defects, and doping with nitrogen were analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Using experimental data, supercells of functionalized N-MWCNTs with an oxygen content of 2.7, 4 and 6 at. % in carboxyl groups were built by quantum chemical methods. Our analysis by the self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding (SCC DFTB) method shows that a key role in the functionalization of CNTs with carboxyl groups belongs to Stone–Wales defects. The results of research in the decoration of CNTs with HIF-1α demonstrate the possibility of wave-diffusion drug delivery. The nature of hybridization and relaxation determines the mechanism of oxygen regulation with HIF-1α molecules, namely, by OH-(OH–C) and OH-(O=C) chemical bonds. The concentration dependence of drug release in the diffusion mode suggests that the best pattern for drug delivery is provided by the tube with a carboxylic oxygen content of 6 at. %.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) serve as nanoparticles due to their size, and for that reason, when in contact with the biological system, they can have toxic effects. One of the main mechanisms responsible for nanotoxicity is oxidative stress resulting from the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, oxidative stress biomarkers are important tools for assessing MWCNTs toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in male rats. Our animal model studies of MWCNTs (diameter ~15–30 nm, length ~15–20 μm) include measurement of oxidative stress parameters in the body fluid and tissues of animals after long-term exposure. Rattus Norvegicus/Wistar male rats were administrated a single injection to the knee joint at three concentrations: 0.03 mg/mL, 0.25 mg/mL, and 0.5 mg/mL. The rats were euthanized 12 and 18 months post-exposure by drawing blood from the heart, and their liver and kidney tissues were removed. To evaluate toxicity, the enzymatic activity of total protein (TP), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S–transferase (GST), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), nitric oxide (NO), and catalase (CAT) was measured and histopathological examination was conducted. Results in rat livers showed that TEAC level was decreased in rats receiving nanotubes at higher concentrations. Results in kidneys report that the level of NO showed higher concentration after long exposure, and results in animal serums showed lower levels of GSH in rats exposed to nanotubes at higher concentrations. The 18-month exposure also resulted in a statistically significant increase in GST activity in the group of rats exposed to nanotubes at higher concentrations compared to animals receiving MWCNTs at lower concentrations and compared to the control group. Therefore, an analysis of oxidative stress parameters can be a key indicator of the toxic potential of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Органосиликатный композит на основе тетраполиэтиленгликолята кремния и многостенных углеродных нанотрубок серии «Таунит» разной степени окисления применили для модификации угольно-пастовых электродов. Методом циклической вольтамперометрии исследована электрохимическое поведение электродов. Показано, что с точки зрения эффективности переноса электронов наилучшей является система на основе неокисленных многостенных углеродных нанотрубок в присутствии редокссоединения – гексацианоферрата (III) калия (Ks ̴ 0,19 ± 0,01 см·с-1), For fixing carbon nanotubes, we used silicon tetrapolyethyleneglycolate, which acted as a polymer matrix. The electrochemical characteristic of the heterogeneity constant is investigated by the method of cyclic voltammetry. It is shown that from the point of view of electron transfer efficiency, the best system is based on the initial multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the presence of a redox compound – potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) (Ks 0,19 ± 0,01 cm · s-1).

Polymer foam that provides good support with high energy return (low energy loss) is desirable for sport footwear to improve running performance. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) foam is commonly used in the midsole of running shoes. However, EVA foam exhibits low mechanical properties. Conventional mineral fillers are usually employed to improve EVA's mechanical performance, but the energy return is sacrificed. Here, we produced nanocomposite foams from EVA and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) using a chemical foaming process. Two kinds of CNT derived from the upcycling of commodity plastics were prepared through a catalytic chemical vapor deposition process and used as reinforcing and nucleating agents. Our results show that EVA foam incorporated with oxygenated CNT (O-CNT) demonstrated a more pronounced improvement of physical, mechanical, and dynamic impact response properties than acid-purified CNT (A-CNT). When CNT with weight percentage as low as 0.5 wt% was added to the nanocomposites, the physical properties, abrasion resistance, compressive strength, dynamic stiffness, and rebound performance of the EVA foams were improved significantly. Unlike the conventional EVA formulation filled with talc mineral fillers, the incorporation of CNT does not compromise the energy return of the EVA foam. From the long-cycle dynamic fatigue test, the CNT/EVA foam displays greater properties retention as compared to the talc/EVA foam. This work demonstrates a good balanced of mechanical-energy return properties of EVA nanocomposite foam with very low CNT content, which presents promising opportunities for lightweight-high rebound midsoles for running shoes. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are receiving special attention due to their remarkable thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. The present work reports an innovative synthesis procedure to decorate MWCNTs with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) via pulsed reverse deposition technique using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on choline chloride and glycerol as an electrolyte at room temperature, not requiring any previous surface modification of MWCNTs. MWCNTs decorated with Ag-NPs disclose a significant enhancement of their electrochemical performance as demonstrated by the increase of electrode stability and specific capacitance. Electrochemical characterization of the composite material was performed using cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge curves, achieving a specific capacitance up to 28.50 F. g−1, against 4.70 F. g−1 for the commercial MWCNTs in a three-electrode system. Retention of the specific capacitance up to 99% for the Ag-MWCNTs composites compared with a value of 78% for electrodes modified with commercial MWCNTs. The Ag-MWCNTs composites were characterized through SEM/EDX analysis, ultrahigh-resolution STEM, in which the Z – Contrast image was collected, and Raman analysis to prove the successful attachment of the Ag-NPs to the MWCNTs surface. AFM was performed to evaluate the conductivity of the composites.

Cadaverine is a biomolecule of major healthcare importance in periodontal disease; however, current detection methods remain inefficient. The development of an enzyme biosensor for the detection of cadaverine may provide a cheap, rapid, point-of-care alternative to traditional measurement techniques. This work developed a screen-printed biosensor (SPE) with a diamine oxidase (DAO) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) functionalised electrode which enabled the detection of cadaverine via cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The MWCNTs were functionalised with DAO using carbodiimide crosslinking with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), followed by direct covalent conjugation of the enzyme to amide bonds. Cyclic voltammetry results demonstrated a pair of distinct redox peaks for cadaverine with the C-MWCNT/DAO/EDC-NHS/GA SPE and no redox peaks using unmodified SPEs. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to isolate the cadaverine oxidation peak and a linear concentration dependence was identified in the range of 3–150 µg/mL. The limit of detection of cadaverine using the C-MWCNT/DAO/EDC-NHS/GA SPE was 0.8 μg/mL, and the biosensor was also found to be effective when tested in artificial saliva which was used as a proof-of-concept model to increase the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of this device. Thus, the development of a MWCNT based enzymatic biosensor for the voltammetric detection of cadaverine which was also active in the presence of artificial saliva was presented in this study.

The research on flavonoids has exponentially grown since their first therapeutic evidence, in 1937. They are effective in vitro in a wide range of human diseases, particularly those mediated by free radicals, such as cancer, atherosclerosis, AIDS, or neuronal diseases. However, their applications have been reduced due to their low solubility, poor absorption, and rapid metabolism. Flavonoid encapsulation in nanocarriers significantly improves their oral absorption, protects the drug against degradation, decreases the first-pass hepatic effect, and makes absorption through the lymphatic system easier. In this work, carbon nanotubes were used as nanocarriers of 7-hydroxyflavone, 7-HF. The encapsulation of 7-HF into pristine single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and into -COOH functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes has been investigated. The equilibrium association constants were estimated. The structural backbone of 7-HF, two benzene rings linked through three carbon atoms that form a pyran heterocyclic ring containing a keto group, seems to play a key role in the 7-HF/CNT interactions, although other types of interactions are also at work. The development of tunable UV-curable polymeric composites for functional applications, taking into consideration environmental issues and additive manufacturing technologies, is a research topic with relevant challenges yet to be solved. Herein, acrylic composites filled with 0–3 wt.%. polyaniline/ multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PANI/MWCNT) are prepared by Digital Light Processing (DLP) in order to tailor morphology, thermal, mechanical, and electromechanical properties. Viscosity, real-time infrared spectroscopy, and cure depth tests allow optimizing resin composition for suitable DLP printing. 2 wt.% is the maximum filler content reproducibly embedded in the polymer matrix. The advantages of PANI/MWCNT (50/50 wt.%) compared with single-component composites include safety issues, enhanced printability, increased electrical conductivity and thermal stability, and lower electrical percolation threshold (0.83 wt.%). Above this threshold the composites display excellent piezoresistive response, no hysteresis, and stability for over 400 compression cycles. The pressure sensibility (PS) of 2 wt.% composites decreases with applied pressure from PS ≈ 15 to 0.8 Mpa−1 for maximum pressures of 0.02 and 0.57 MPa, respectively. The adsorption-related applications of CNTs to solve environmental pollution problems have received considerable attention in recent years. Carbon nanotubes are strong materials with the capacity to form covalent bonds. These features can be improved with various modifications. The use of CNTs in the adsorption of heavy metals has become widespread. MWCNT-Metal pairs can be important for many different applications. The aim of this study is to investigate the Ag(I) ions adsorption capacity of MWCNTs from aqueous solutions using the experimental design method. A full factorial design was employed to optimize the adsorption of Ag(I) ions onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The effects of process parameters such as the initial Ag(I) concentrations (10 and 100 mg/L), pH (2 and 8) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes dosage (0.1 and 1.0 g/L) on Ag(I) adsorption were investigated on the adsorption process. Under acidic conditions, the removal efficiency of silver ions was found to be high by using MWCNTs. According to the results of factorial design calculations, the maximum adsorption capacity was found as 0.998 mg/g.

Conductive polymers and their composites have been widely applied in different applications, including sensing applications. Herein, we constructed a conductive composite of polypropylene, carbon black, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PP/CB/MWCNTs) to experimentally study its sensing behaviors in a humid thermal environment. The as-synthesized PP/CB/MWCNT composite polymer was immersed in simulated sweat in deionized water at 67 °C. Regarding their electrical and mechanical properties, different experimental parameters, such as cyclic loading and hygrothermal aging, were investigated by recording the mass changes, carrying out strain sensing experiments, and performing dynamic mechanical analyses before and after the immersion test. The results reveal that the filler content improved the rate of water absorption but decreased at higher concentrations of the solution. The sensitivity of the material decreased by up to 53% after the hygrothermal ageing and cyclic loading. Moreover, the sensitivity under cyclic compression loading decreased with an increasing immersion time, qualitatively illustrated by an effective quantum tunneling effect and conducting path model. Finally, hygrothermal aging reduced the composite’s glass transition temperature. This reduction was the most significant for specimens immersed in deionized water, ascribed to the moisture absorption, reducing the molecular chain activity.

The use of nanofillers with high surface area and extreme purity in polymer composite is an effective strategy to obtain high performance polymeric nanocomposites. Therefore, the effect of nanofillers such as carbon nanotubes (CNT), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and their hybrid on rubber-based composites was studied. In this study, rubber nanocomposites were fabricated by using room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber matrix and nanofillers (i.e. CNT, TiO2, and CNT-TiO2) through solution casting method. Here, the purity and surface area of CNT (purity: >96% and BET surface area: 300 m2/g) and TiO2 (purity: >98% and BET surface area: 165 m2/g) were estimated by field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (FESEM-EDX) and adsorption isotherms. The mechanical properties of the rubber nanocomposites were enhanced by incorporating nanofillers. The compressive modulus was 2.18 MPa for unfilled composites and increased to 6.8 MPa (CNT), 3.95 MPa (CNT-TiO2), and 2.44 MPa (TiO2) at 5 phr, respectively. Similarly, the tensile strength was 0.54 MPa for unfilled composites and increased to 1.37 MPa (CNT), 1.33 MPa (CNT-TiO2) and 0.61 MPa (TiO2) at 5 phr, respectively. Further, the actuation displacement was improved with increasing input voltage and it was 2 mm for CNT, 1.6 mm for CNT-TiO2 hybrid and 0.5 mm for TiO2 at 10 kV. Moreover, a series of experiments show the potential application in piezoelectric actuation.

Disposal of contaminated wastewater causes many serious problems especially when it gets mixed with the ground and seawater. It is, therefore, important to apply any remedial action to eradicate dangerous pollutants from the aqueous effluents and to avoid exposure of this wastewater to aquatic life. The research results discussed herein deal with the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Congo Red (CR) dye from wastewater by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an adsorbent. Different factors like solid dosage, initial pH and concentration, time, and temperature were studied to understand the behavior and mechanism of adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity in case of a single component system was found to be 302 mg/g and 300 mg/g for Congo Red and Rhodamine B, respectively. Moreover, the mechanism of adsorption was best described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of CR and RhB was exothermic when these were removed from a single dye system. However, the overall process became endothermic for concurrent removal of both dyes from the solution. The research results showed that the MWCNTs could successfully be utilized to remove the dye from the industrial wastewater.

Carbon materials of different structural and textural properties (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon cryogel, and carbonized hydrothermal carbon) were used as adsorbents for the removal of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol from aqueous solutions. Chemical modification and/or activation were applied to alter surface characteristics and to increase the adsorption and desorption efficiency of carbon materials. Surfaces of treated and untreated carbon materials were characterized through the examination of the textural properties, the nature of surface functional groups, and surface acidity. It was found that the adsorption capacity of tested carbon materials is not directly proportional to the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. However, a high ratio of surface mesoporosity affected the adsorption process most prominently, by increasing adsorption capacity and the rate of the adsorption process. Adsorption of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. Calculated mean adsorption energy values, along with the thermodynamic parameters, indicated that removal of selected hormones was dominated by the physisorption mechanism. High values of adsorption efficiency (88-100 %) and Langmuir adsorption capacities (29.45-194.7 mg/g) imply that examined materials, especially mesoporous carbon cryogel and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, can be used as powerful adsorbents for relatively fast removal of estrogen hormones from water.

The cylindrical carbon molecules feature high aspect ratios (length-to-diameter values) typically above 103, with diameters from about one nanometer up to tens of nanometers and lengths up to millimeters. This unique one-dimensional structure and concomitant properties endow carbon nanotubes with special natures, rendering them with unlimited potential in nanotechnology-associated applications. Carbon nanotubes are members of the fullerene family. Although the first fullerene molecules were discovered in 1985 [1], it was not until Sumio Iijima reported his findings in 1991 about needlelike carbon tubes in Nature that carbon nanotubes came to public awareness [2]. Since then, carbon nanotubes with various structures have been discovered. According to the number of graphic shells, they are mainly categorized as single-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes reported by Sumio Iijima were multi-walled carbon nanotubes synthesized by arc discharge methods. Two years later, two sets of researchers working independently, Sumio Iijima and Toshinari Ichihashi [3], along with Donald Stimson Bethune and his colleagues at International Business Machines Corporation [4], synthesized single-walled carbon nanotubes, using transition-metal catalyzed arc discharge. A single-walled carbon nanotube can be described as a long tube formed by wrapping a single graphene sheet into a cylinder with diameter of about one nanometer, the ends of which are capped by fullerene cages [5]. The fullerene structures, with alternating structures of five hexagons adjacent to one pentagon, form the surface with desired curvature to enclose the volume. The sidewalls of carbon nanotubes are made of graphene sheets consisting of neighboring hexagonal cells. Other polygon structures, such as pentagons and heptagons, constitute defects of sidewalls. The cylindrical sidewalls can be produced from different rolling directions to make single-walled carbon nanotubes with distinct structures and properties. Due to cylindrical symmetry, there are only a handful of methods that are effective in making seamless cylinders, and they are characterized by the chiral vectors with integer indices (n, m). To establish the chiral vector, two atoms in the graphene sheet are selected, with one serving as the origin of the vector pointing toward the other atom. The graphene sheet is then rolled in a way that allows the two atoms to coincide. Under these circumstances, the chiral vectors form a plane perpendicular to the longitude direction of nanotubes and the lengths of the chiral vectors are equal to the circumference. Three different types of single-walled carbon nanotubes are distinctly characterized, named "zigzag", "armchair", and "chiral" [5]. These structural variations result in differences in electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes are concentrically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube assemblies with different diameters [5]. The distance between adjacent shells is about 0.34 nanometer. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes differ from single-walled carbon nanotubes not only in their dimensions, but also in their corresponding properties. Various techniques have been developed to produce carbon nanotubes in sizable quantity, high yield, and purity, while maintaining a reasonable cost. Well-developed techniques include arc discharge, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition, and most processes involve costly vacuum conditions. Arc discharge was initially used for the synthesis of fullerenes. In a typical experimental setup, a chamber filled with low-pressure (50 to 700 millibars) inert gas (helium, argon) is where the reaction takes place. Two carbon rods are placed end-to-end as the electrodes, separated by a few millimeters, and a direct current of 50 to 100 amperes (driven by a potential difference of 20 volts) generates a high discharge temperature to sublime the negative electrode, leaving soot where carbon nanotubes are found. This method is the most common way to synthesize carbon nanotubes and perhaps the easiest way. The quality of carbon nanotubes depends on the uniformity of plasma arc, catalysts, and the selection of filling gases [5]. A mixture of carbon nanotubes is usually produced; thus, purification processes are needed to remove the fullerenes, amorphous carbon, and catalysts. Laser ablation was first employed to produce carbon nanotubes in 1995 [5]. A pulsed or continuous laser is used to vaporize a graphite (or graphite metal mixture) target in an oven with a temperature of 1,200 °C filled with inert gas at a pressure of 500 torr. Carbon vapors cool down rapidly during expansion, and carbon atoms quickly condense to form tubular structures with the help of catalyst particles. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes can be synthesized when pure graphite is vaporized, and single-walled carbon nanotubes are grown from graphite-transition metal (cobalt, nickel, and the like) mixtures. The method is primarily used to synthesize single-walled carbon nanotubes with high selectivity and in a diameter-controllable way by tailoring reaction temperatures. The resulting products are usually in the form of bundles. Laser ablation is the most-costly technique due to the involvement of expensive lasers and high-power input. Chemical vapor deposition is the most promising way to produce carbon nanotubes on an industrial scale. This process utilizes high energy (temperatures of 600-900 °C) to atomize gaseous carbon sources, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and acetylene. The resulting reactive carbon atoms diffuse toward a catalyst-coated substrate and condense to form carbon nanotubes [5]. Well-aligned carbon nanotubes can be synthesized with precisely controlled morphology, provided that proper reaction conditions are maintained, including preparation of substrates, selection of catalysts, and the like. Novel chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties absent in other materials have been discovered in carbon nanotubes [5]. Pristine carbon nanotubes are inert to most chemicals and need to be grafted with surface functional groups to increase their chemical reactivity and add new properties. For single-walled carbon nanotubes, electrical conductivity is dependent on the chiral vector and independent of the length as determined by quantum mechanics. Considering a chiral vector with indices (n, m), carbon nanotubes are metallic in some cases and semiconducting in other cases. Along the longitude directions, carbon nanotubes show superior mechanical strength, with the highest known tensile strength and elastic modulus among known materials. As for thermal properties, carbon nanotubes outperform diamond as the best thermal conductor. Applications of carbon nanotubes are aimed to make use of their unique properties to solve problems at the nanoscale. Their high surface area, together with the unique ability to carry any chemical compounds after surface modification, offers carbon nanotubes the potential to be used as nanoscale catalyst supports with high catalytic reactivity and chemical sensors. They are known to be the best field emitters due to their sharp tips, which can concentrate electric field easily, enabling them to emit electrons at low voltages. This property has special applications in field emission flat-panel displays and cold-cathode electron guns used in microscopes. In nanoelectronics, single-walled carbon nanotubes have been used to fabricate transistors that can function at room temperature and are potential candidates for devices operating at terahertz frequencies [5]. Engineering materials using carbon nanotubes as additives have exhibited capability to make plastic composites with enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. Graphene is a two-dimensional form of crystalline carbon, either a single layer of carbon atoms forming a honeycomb (hexagonal) lattice or several coupled layers of this honeycomb structure [6]. The word graphene, when used without specifying the form (for example, bilayer graphene, multilayer graphene), usually refers to single-layer graphene [6]. Graphene is a parent form of all graphitic structures of carbon: graphite, which is a three-dimensional crystal consisting of relatively weakly coupled graphene layers; nanotubes, which may be represented as scrolls of graphene; and buckyballs, spherical molecules made from graphene with some hexagonal rings replaced by pentagonal rings. The theoretical study of graphene was started in 1947 by physicist Philip Russell Wallace as a first step to understanding the electronic structure of graphite [6]. The term graphene was introduced by chemists Hanns-Peter Boehm, Ralph Setton, and Eberhard Stumpp in 1986 as a combination of the word graphite, referring to carbon in its ordered crystalline form, and the suffix -ene, referring to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in which the carbon atoms form hexagonal, or six-sided, ring structures [6]. In 2004 University of Manchester physicists Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim and colleagues isolated single-layer graphene using an extremely simple method of exfoliation from graphite [7]. Their "scotch-tape method" used adhesive tape to remove the top layers from a sample of graphite and then apply the layers to a substrate material. When the tape was removed, some graphene remained on the substrate in single-layer form. In fact, derivation of graphene is not a difficult task by itself; each time someone draws with a pencil on paper, the pencil trace contains a small fraction of single-layer and multilayer graphene. The achievement of the Manchester group was not only to isolate graphene flakes but also to study their physical properties. In particular, they demonstrated that electrons in graphene have a very high mobility, which means that graphene could possibly be used in electronic applications. In 2010 Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for their work [6]. In these first experiments, the substrate for graphene was silicon naturally covered by a thin transparent layer of silicon dioxide. It turned out that single-layer graphene created an optical contrast with the silicon dioxide that was strong enough to make the graphene visible under a standard optical microscope. This visibility has two causes. First, electrons in graphene interact very strongly with photons in the visible light frequencies, absorbing about 2.3 percent of the light's intensity per atomic layer. Second, the optical contrast is strongly enhanced by interference phenomena in the silicon dioxide layer; these are the same phenomena that create rainbow colors in thin films. The basic electronic structure of graphene and, as a consequence, its electric properties are very peculiar [6]. By applying a gate voltage or using chemical doping by adsorbed atoms and molecules, one can create either electron or hole (a region where an electron is missing that acts as a positive electric charge) conductivity in graphene that is similar to the electrical conductivity created in semiconductors. However, in most semiconductors there are certain energy levels where electrons and holes do not have allowed quantum states, and, because electrons and holes cannot occupy these levels, for certain gate voltages and types of chemical doping, the semiconductor acts as an insulator. Graphene, on the other hand, does not have an insulator state, and the electrical conductivity remains finite at any doping, including zero doping. Existence of this minimal electrical conductivity for the undoped case is a striking difference between graphene and conventional semiconductors [6]. Electron and hole states in graphene relevant for charge-carrier transport are similar to the states of ultra-relativistic quantum particles, that is, quantum particles moving at the speed of light (the ultimate velocity in nature, according to the theory of relativity). The honeycomb lattice of graphene actually consists of two sublattices, designated A and B, such that each atom in sublattice A is surrounded by three atoms of sublattice B and vice versa [6]. This simple geometrical arrangement leads to the appearance that the electrons and holes in graphene have an unusual degree of internal freedom, usually called pseudospin [6]. In fact, making the analogy more complete, pseudospin mimics the spin, or internal angular momentum, of subatomic particles [6]. Within this analogy, electrons and holes in graphene play the same role as particles and antiparticles (for example, electrons and positrons) in quantum electrodynamics [6]. At the same time, however, the velocity of the electrons and holes is only about one three-hundredth the speed of light. This makes graphene a test bed for high-energy physics. More specifically, some quantum relativistic effects that are hardly reachable in experiments with subatomic particles using particle accelerators have clear analogs in the physics of electrons and holes in graphene, which can be measured and studied more easily because of their lower velocity [6]. An example is the Klein paradox, in which ultra-relativistic quantum particles, contrary to intuition, penetrate easily through very high and broad energy barriers [6]. Consequently, graphene provides a bridge between materials science and some areas of fundamental physics, for example, relativistic quantum mechanics. There is another reason why graphene is of special interest to fundamental science: it is the first and simplest example of a two-dimensional crystal, that is, a solid material that contains just a single layer of atoms arranged in an ordered pattern [6]. Two-dimensional systems (surfaces, membranes, and interfaces) are of huge interest not only for physics but also for chemistry and other natural sciences. In many respects, two-dimensional systems are fundamentally different from three-dimensional systems. In particular, due to very strong thermal fluctuations of atomic positions that remain correlated at large distances, long-range crystalline order cannot exist in two dimensions. Instead, only short-range order exists, and it does so only on some finite scale of characteristic length, a caveat that should be noted when graphene is called a two-dimensional "crystal". For this reason, two-dimensional systems are inherently "flexural", manifesting strong bending fluctuations, so that they cannot be flat and are always rippled or corrugated. Graphene, because of its relative simplicity, can be considered as a model system for studying two-dimensional physics and chemistry in general [6]. Other two-dimensional crystals besides graphene can be derived by exfoliation from other multilayer crystals (for example, hexagonal boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, or tungsten disulfide) or by chemical modification of graphene (for example, graphane, hydrogenated graphene, or fluorinated graphene). Modern electronics (for example, integrated circuits in computer chips) are basically two-dimensional in that they use mainly the surface of semiconducting materials [6]. Therefore, graphene and other two-dimensional materials are considered very promising for many such applications. Using graphene, for example, it should be possible to make transistors and other electronic devices that are much thinner than devices made of traditional materials. Many other applications have been proposed. For example, graphene, being electrically conducting, transparent, strong, and flexible, may be a prospective material for use in touch screens [6]. Graphene also has very high thermal conductivity and, therefore, could be used to remove heat from electronic circuits. The field of graphene science and technology is relatively new, having emerged since Geim and Novoselov's work in 2004 [6]. In the decades that followed, it remained difficult to say which applications would prove to be the most popular. Progress depends not only on the basic science but also on the development of new ways to produce graphene on an industrial scale. For example, obtaining graphene by exfoliation is too expensive for mass production. Methods proposed include the formation of graphene layers by burning silicon carbide or by chemical vapor deposition of carbon on the surface of some metals such as copper or nickel. These methods would allow the production of samples of graphene that were macroscopically large in two dimensions (for example, up to tens of centimeters) but still atomically thin. From unique physical properties to mechanical properties, graphene offers tremendous opportunities for the development of fundamentally new material systems [8]. In particular, the exceptional physical and mechanical properties offer scope for the development of graphene-reinforced polymer matrix composite materials. Significant agricultural and industrial activities necessitate the regular monitoring of nitrate (NO3−) ions levels in feed and groundwater. The current comparative study discloses an innovative user-friendly electrochemical approach for the determination of NO3− over polyaniline (PAni)-based modified electrodes. The electrochemical sensors concocted with PAni, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT), and gum arabic (GA). The unique electrode material GA@PAni-CNT was synthesized by facile one-pot catalytic polymerization of aniline (Ani) with FeCl3/H2O2 in the presence of CNT and GA as integral components. As revealed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), the anchoring/retention of NO3− followed by reduction is proposed to occur when a GA@PAni-CNT electrode is immersed in phosphate buffer electrolyte containing NO3− that eventually results in a significantly higher redox activity of the GA@PAni-CNT electrode upon potential scan. The mechanism of NO3− anchoring may be associated with the non-redox transition of leucomeraldine salt (LS) into emeraldine salt (ES) and the generation of nitrite (NO2−) ions. As a result, the oxidation current produced by CV for redox transition of ES ↔ pernigraniline (PN) was ~9 times of that obtained with GA@PAni-CNT electrode and phosphate buffer electrolyte, thus achieving indirect NO3− voltammetric determination of the GA@PAni-CNT electrode. The prepared GA@PAni-CNT electrode displayed a higher charge transfer ability as compared to that of PAni-CNT and PAni electrodes. The optimum square wave voltammetric (SWV) response resulted in two linear concentration ranges of 1–10 (R2 = 0.9995) and 15–50 µM (R2 = 0.9988) with a detection limit of 0.42 µM, which is significantly lower. The GA@PAni-CNT electrode demonstrated the best detection, sensitivity, and performance among the investigated electrodes for indirect voltammetric determination of NO3− that portrayed the possibility of utilizing GA—stabilized PAni and CNT nanocomposite materials in additional electrochemical sensing applications.

Adefovir (ADV) is an anti-retroviral drug, which can be used to treat acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and chronic hepatitis B (CHB), so its quantitative analysis is of great significance. In this work, zirconium molybdate (ZrMo2O8) was synthesized by a wet chemical method, and a composite with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was made. ZrMo2O8-MWCNTs composite was dropped onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare ZrMo2O8-MWCNTs/GCE, and ZrMo2O8-MWCNTs/GCE was used in the electrochemical detection of ADV for the first time. The preparation method is fast and simple. The materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). It was electrochemically analysed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Compared with single-material modified electrodes, ZrMo2O8-MWCNTs/GCE showed a vastly improved electrochemical response to ADV. Moreover, the sensor complements the study of the electrochemical detection of ADV. Under optimal conditions, the proposed electrochemical method showed a wide linear range (from 1 to 100 μM) and a low detection limit (0.253 μM). It was successfully tested in serum and urine. In addition, the sensor has the advantages of a simple preparation, fast response, good reproducibility and repeatability. It may be helpful in the potential applications of other substances with similar structures.

Caffeic acid is an antioxidant that has been widely been related to the health benefits of people in recent years. In this paper, the amino side chains of chitosan (CS) were modified with protoporphyrin IX by amide cross-linking, and then Zn ions were chelated. The properties of metalloporphyrin-preparing functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Zn ions chelated by protoporphyrin IX composites were used as sensitive-selective electrochemical biosensors for the determination of caffeic acid. The morphology and structure of nanocomposite Zn–PPIX–CS–MWCNTs were observed by X-ray spectroscopy mapping (EDX mapping), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical behaviors of Zn–PPIX–CS–MWCNT-modified glassy carbon (GC) electrodes were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results show that the modified electrode had good electrocatalytic activity towards caffeic acid with a wide linear range of 0.0008–1.6 mM, an excellent sensitivity of 886.90 µAmM−1cm−1, and a detection limit of 0.022 µM. In addition, the caffeic acid sensor had excellent reproducibility, stability, and selectivity to various interfering substances. Therefore, the modified electrode prepared by this experiment can also be applied to electrochemical sensors of other substances.

As a by-product of wheat planting, wheat straw is an abundant agricultural residue with the highest cellulose content of all agricultural fibers. Its resourceful utilization contributes to alleviating the environmental problems it caused. In this study, cellulose from wheat straw (WS) is used as a dispersing agent to prepare a novel multi-walled carbon nanotube-modified nickel foam (NF) electrode. The new electrode is investigated for electrochemical properties relevant to supercapacitors. The 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation is chosen to produce cellulose nanofibers (CNF) from wheat straw. The prepared CNF is used to facilitate the uniform dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and favor the formation of a stable CNF-CNTs membrane on the nickel foam skeleton. The influence of dispersing materials and content of CNF on the electrochemical performance of electrodes is investigated. It is revealed that the incorporation of CNF can improve the electrochemical stability of electrodes. Moreover, it also exhibits optimum capabilities (70.2% capacitance retention from 1 to 40 mA cm−2) when CNF:MWCNT = 1:0.7. The areal capacity of the CNF-MWCNT/NF electrode for a scanning rate of 5 mV s−1 is twice that of the MWCNT/NF electrode and 30 times that of the NF electrode, indicating it is a promising candidate to ensure the synchronization of a green environment and energy development.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified on the tips and inner walls by 12-chloro-12-oxododecanedioic acid-methyl ester groups and then added to the polyamide composite membranes to prepare MWCNT-CH2OCOC12H23O2 membranes for desalination. The characterization results of transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform, infrared transform, and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the 12-chloro-12-oxododecanedioic acid-methyl ester group was successfully grafted to the entrances and inner walls of the MWCNTs. The performance of the MWCNTs’ composite membranes was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle, and filtration test. The modified membrane morphology is more uniform, and there is no structural damage. The grafting of carbon nanotubes with methyl 12-chloro-12-oxydodecyldicarboxylate could improve the hydrophilicity of the membrane. Under identical conditions, the water flux of MWCNT-CH2OCOC12H23O2 membranes was higher than that of the pristine carbon nanotube’s membrane, and the desalination rate was also slightly improved.

Rutin is a flavonoid glycoside compound, which is mainly transported via the blood circulation system in the human body. The monitoring of the blood concentration of rutin is of great significance in many fields such as pharmacology and pharmacokinetics. In this work, a biosensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), hydroxyl fullerenes (HFs), and laccase (Lac) nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrodes was constructed. The modified materials were characterized with a transmission electron microscope (TEM), cyclic voltammograms (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). CTAB is used to disperse MWCNTs and improve hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of MWCNTs, while the use of Lac can enhance the oxidation of catechol structure in rutin, thus significantly improving the sensitivity and selectivity of the modified electrode. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) studies showed that the determination linear ranges of rutin were 0.1 µmol L−1 to 2 µmol L−1 and 2 µmol L−1 to 11 µmol L−1, with the determination limits of 30 nmol L−1 and 95.5 nmol L−1, respectively. The proposed biosensor can be used to detect rutin tablets and serum samples with high recovery, which indicates a good accuracy of this method, and the results are consistent with those measured by the traditional ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) method. Hence, this biosensor has potential practical application value in rutin drug quality testing and clinical blood drug concentration monitoring.

Releasing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into ecosystems affects the biofilm formation and metabolic activity of bacteria in aquatic and soil environments. Pristine (pMWCNTs), oleophilic (oMWCNTs), hydrophilic (hMWCNTs), and carboxylated (cMWCNTs) carbon nanotubes were used to investigate their effects on bacterial biofilm. A pronounced probiofilm effect of modified MWCNTs was observed on the Gram-negative bacteria of Pseudomonas fluorescens C2, Acinetobacter guillouiae 11 h, and Alcaligenes faecalis 2. None of the studied nanomaterials resulted in the complete inhibition of biofilm formation. The complete eradication of biofilms exposed to MWCNTs was not observed. The functionalization of carbon nanotubes was shown to change their probiofilm and antibiofilm effects. Gram-negative bacteria were the most susceptible to destruction, and among the modified MWCNTs, oMWCNTs had the greatest effect on biofilm destruction. The number of living cells in the biofilms was assessed by the reduction of XTT, and metabolic activity was assessed by the reduction of resazurin to fluorescent resorufin. The biofilms formed in the presence of MWCNTs reduced tetrozolium to formazan more actively than the control biofilms. When mature biofilms were exposed to MWCNTs, dehydrogenase activity decreased in Rhodococcus erythropolis 4-1, A. guillouiae 11 h, and A. faecalis 2 in the presence of pMWCNTs and hMWCNTs, as well as in A. guillouiae 11 h exposed to cMWCNTs. When mature biofilms were exposed to pMWCNTs, hMWCNTs, and cMWCNTs, the metabolism of cells decreased in most strains, and oMWCNTs did not have a pronounced inhibitory effect. The antibiofilm and probiofilm effects of MWCNTs were strain-dependent.

More than 400 papers were written in 2021 on the application of carbon nanomaterials in various fields. The high demand for the use of such materials has increased due to a sharp increase in the demand for semiconductor materials and materials for supercapacitor electrodes and other electrical devices. Despite the unique physical properties of carbon nanomaterials, there are limitations to their use. To solve this problem, various methods of modifying the surface, both through chemical interactions and physical adsorption, were proposed. One of these methods is chemical modification. The evaluation of effect of chemical treatment parameters on the properties of carbon nanomaterials is an urgent task due to the fact that the chemistry of the processes is poorly understood. In this work, the effect of concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids on the change of specific surface area, elemental composition, composition of functional groups, and also on the change of specific capacitance was considered. It is believed that both the porosity and the functional groups formed during oxidation contribute to the change in specific capacitance. The specific surface area of all samples decreased on average by a factor of 1.5–3 after the chemical treatment. Different oxygen and sulfurcontaining functional groups are observed after the chemical treatment. The highest specific capacitance of the treated carbon nanofibers was 114 F/g. A hybrid electromagnetic nanomaterial, which is a matrix based on a conjugated polymer of poly-3-amine-7-methylamine-2-methylphenazine with dispersed magnetite nanoparticles immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes, has been synthesized. In situ magnetometry was used to study the kinetics of the hydrogen reduction of Fe3O4 immobilized in the structure of a ternary nanocomposite in magnetic fields of different intensities. An increase in the magnetite reduction reaction rate with the formation of metallic iron nanoparticles at T=420∘C and at a magnetic field strength in the range of 60–3000 Oe was observed. The dependence of the degree of conversion of Fe3O4 on the magnetic field strength was established.

This study aims to increase the specific surface area of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by forming and subsequently removing various metal oxide nanoparticles on them. We used facile methods, such as forming the particles without using a vacuum or gas and removing these particles through simple acid treatment. The shapes of the composite structures on which the metal oxide particles were formed and the formation of multi-vacancy-defect MWCNTs were confirmed via transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The crystallinity of the formed metal oxide particles was confirmed using X-ray diffraction analysis. Through specific surface area analysis and Raman spectroscopy, the number of defects formed and the degree and tendency of defect-formation in each metal were determined. In all the cases where the metal oxide particles were removed, the specific surface area increased, and the metal inducing the highest specific surface area was determined.

Magnesium matrix composites are extensively used in automotive and structural applications due to their low density, high strength, and wear-resistant properties. To reach the scope of industry needs, research is carried out regarding enhancing the mechanical and tribological behavior of the magnesium composites by reinforcing the nano-sized reinforcements. In the present work, research has been carried out to enhance the properties of the magnesium AZ91D hybrid composite by reinforcing carbon fibers (CFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with varying weight percentages (AZ91D + 0.5% CF’s + 0.5% MWCNT and AZ91D + 0.75% CF’s + 0.75% MWCNT, respectively). The experimental tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical and tribological behavior of the composites. The test results showed that the addition of CF and MWCNT reinforcements improved the hybrid Mg composite’s hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength compared to the base Mg matrix. The AZ91D + 0.75% CF’s + 0.75% MWCNT hybrid composite showed a 19%, 35%, and 66% increased hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength, respectively, compared to the base Mg AZ91D. The wear test results also showed the improved wear resistance of the Mg composite compared to the base matrix. The enhanced wear resistance of the composite is due to the addition of hard MWCNT and CF reinforcements. The wear rate of the AZ91D + 0.75%CF’s + 0.75% MWCNT composite for a load of 30 N at a sliding distance of 1500 m is lower as compared to the base matrix. The SEM micrographs of the worn surfaces revealed the existence of abrasive wear. The improved mechanical and tribological behavior of the magnesium composite is also due to the homogeneous distribution of the hard reinforcement particles along the grain boundaries.

In this study, the phase-structure and rheological response-behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) modified asphalt-binder (MWCNTs-MA) were measured and quantified in the laboratory. The changes in the molecular dynamics due to MWCNTs modification were simulated and quantified based on the intermolecular interaction energy computations, electrostatic potential surface analyses and phase-structure modeling of the asphalt-binder matrix. The rheological properties such as the asphalt-binder viscosity and complex modulus, of both the base and modified asphalt-binders, were determined using the standard Brookfield viscometer (BV) and dynamic shear rheology (DSR) test devices, respectively. In comparison to the base asphalt-binder, the corresponding BV-DSR test results exhibited higher viscosity and complex modulus for the MWCNTs modified asphalt-binder, with reduced sensitivity and susceptibility to temperature variations. From the study results, it was observed that MWCNTs significantly improved the rheological properties and high-temperature performance of the asphalt-binder. Overall, the study has demonstrated that MWCNT modified asphalt-binder has great promising potential for application and usage as a road-pavement material, particularly with respect to mitigating the high temperature related distresses such as rutting.

The Vickers hardness and Young’s modulus of the hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramics with a small amount of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by using ultramicrotester Shimadzu for dynamic tests DUH-211. Small concentrations of MWCNTs were from 0.05 to 0.5 wt.%. The argon inert atmosphere and vacuum condition were taken for the prevention of the MWCNTs oxidation. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area SBET of the HA-MWCNTs composites was determined by thermal adsorption-desorption of nitrogen. It was found that for HA-MWCNTs sintered in the Ar atmosphere, an increase in the concentration of nanotubes up to 0.5 wt.% leads to a decrease in porosity near 3 times in comparison to HA without MWCNTs additives. The small amount of additives of multi-walled carbon nanotubes leads to an increase in hardness of 1.3 times and compression strength of composite and compression strength of composite that is comparable in absolute values with the literature data of enamel hardness (3–5 GPa) and compression strength (95–370 MPa). The absolute values increase close to linearly with the increase of nanotube concentrations. The Young’s modulus of sintered composite slightly changes with the variation of concentrations of nanotubes and close to the enamel (75–100 GPa). The ratio of plastic work to total work and the ratio of elastic (reversible) work to the total work of deformation of composite HA/MWCNTs are practically constant at a studied range of MWCNTs concentration. The additives of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes lead to both an increase in the elasticity index of ~1.5 times and an increase in the resistance to plastic deformation of ~3 times, which improved the tribological performance of the surface. Plastic and elastic (reversible) work slightly changed.

Increasing applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) indicate the necessity to examine their toxicity. According to previous studies, CNTs caused oxidative stress that impaired β-cell functions and reduced insulin secretion. Our previous study indicated that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) could induce oxidative stress in pancreatic islets. However, there is no study on the effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on islets and β-cells. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate effects of MWCNTs on the oxidative stress of islets and the protective effects of caffeic acid (CA) as an antioxidant. The effects of MWCNTs and CA on islets were investigated using MTT assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), the content of glutathione (GSH) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and insulin secretion measurements. The lower viability of islet cells was dose-dependent due to the exposure to MWCNTs according to the MTT assay. Further studies revealed that MWCNTs decreased insulin secretion and MMP, induced ROS creation, increased the MDA level, and decreased activities of SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, and content of GSH. Furthermore, the pretreatment of islets with CA returned the changes. These findings indicated that MWCNTs might induce the oxidative stress of pancreatic islets occurring diabetes and protective CA effects that were mediated by the augmentation of the antioxidant defense system of islets. Our research suggested the necessity of conducting further studies on effects of MWCNTs and CA on the diabetes.

The impacts on the morphological, electrical and hardness properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plates using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as reinforcing fillers have been investigated, using MWCNT loadings between 1 and 7 wt%. Plates of the TPU/MWCNT nanocomposites were fabricated by compression molding from extruded pellets. An X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the incorporation of MWCNTs into the TPU polymer matrix increases the ordered range of the soft and hard segments. SEM images revealed that the fabrication route used here helped to obtain TPU/MWCNT nanocomposites with a uniform dispersion of the nanotubes inside the TPU matrix and promoted the creation of a conductive network that favors the electronic conduction of the composite. The potential of the impedance spectroscopy technique has been used to determine that the TPU/MWCNT plates exhibited two conduction mechanisms, percolation and tunneling conduction of electrons, and their conductivity values increase as the MWCNT loading increases. Finally, although the fabrication route induced a hardness reduction with respect to the pure TPU, the addition of MWCNT increased the Shore A hardness behavior of the TPU plates.

In order to realize effective monitoring for the working performance of seismic isolation structures, a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/methyl vinyl silicone rubber (VMQ) composite was prepared via mechanical blending using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)hexane (DBPMH) as vulcanizing agents. The effects of the different vulcanizing agents on the dispersion of the MWCNT, electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and resistance–strain response of the composites were investigated. The experimental results showed that the percolation threshold of the composites prepared with the two vulcanizing agents was low, while the DCP-vulcanized composites showed high mechanical properties and a better resistance–strain response sensitivity and stability, especially after 15,000 loading cycles. According to the analysis using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier infrared spectroscopy, it was found that the DCP contributed higher vulcanization activity, a denser cross-linking network, better and uniform dispersion, and a more stable damage–reconstruction mechanism for the MWCNT network during the deformation load. Thus, the DCP-vulcanized composites showed better mechanical performance and electrical response abilities. When employing an analytical model based on the tunnel effect theory, the mechanism of the resistance–strain response was explained, and the potential of this composite for real-time strain monitoring for large deformation structures was confirmed.

Rutin is a natural antioxidant flavonoid compound with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral effects that is used to prepare drugs with wide application in clinical treatment. Therefore, the quantitative detection of rutin has important practical significance. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) modified with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and 1-butyl-3-methylimid (ionic liquid, IL) was developed for the super-sensitive detection of the flavonoid rutin. The properties of these modified materials were analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), cyclic voltammograms (CVs), and electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS). CMC was used to disperse MWCNTs to further enhance their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. The modified MWCNTs improved the sensitivity of rutin detection. The square-wave voltammetry (SWV) technique showed that the linear range of rutin concentration determination was 0.01 μM to 1 µM and 1 µM to 10 µM. The minimum concentration detection of rutin was 0.83 nM and 6.6 nM, respectively. The proposed sensor presented good selectivity for rutin and successfully analyzed rutin content in the pharmaceutical rutin tablets. These results are consistent with those measured by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). Therefore, this sensor has latent application value in the analysis of rutin in food and drug tablets and nutraceutical samples.

The bioavailability and mobility of phenanthrene (Phe) adsorbed by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) may be substantially influenced by nonionic surfactants used both in the synthesis and dispersion of MWCNTs. The adsorption mechanisms of Phe adsorbed onto MWCNTs under the different nonionic surfactants Tween 80 (TW-80) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) in the aqueous phase were investigated in terms of changes in the MWCNTs’ compositions and structures. The results showed that TW-80 and TX-100 were easily adsorbed onto MWCNTs. Phe adsorption data onto MWCNTs were better suited to the Langmuir equation than the Freundlich equation. Both TW-80 and TX-100 reduced the adsorption capacity of Phe onto MWCNTs. When TW-80 and TX-100 were added in the adsorption system, the saturated adsorption mass of Phe decreased from 35.97 mg/g to 27.10 and 29.79 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the following three reasons. Firstly, the hydrophobic interactions between MWCNTs and Phe became weakened in the presence of nonionic surfactants. Secondly, the nonionic surfactants covered the adsorption sites of MWCNTs, which caused Phe adsorption to be reduced. Finally, nonionic surfactants can also promote the desorption of Phe from MWCNTs.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess excellent physicochemical and structural properties alongside their nano dimensions, constituting a medical platform for the delivery of different therapeutic molecules and drug systems. Hydroxytyrosol (HT) is a molecule with potent antioxidant properties that, however, is rapidly metabolized in the organism. HT immobilized on functionalized CNTs could improve its oral absorption and protect it against rapid degradation and elimination. This study investigated the effects of cellular oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (oxMWCNTs) as biocompatible carriers of HT. The oxidation of MWCNTs via H2SO4 and HNO3 has a double effect since it leads to increased hydrophilicity, while the introduced oxygen functionalities can contribute to the delivery of the drug. The in vitro effects of HT, oxMWCNTS, and oxMWCNTS functionalized with HT (oxMWCNTS_HT) were studied against two different cell lines (NIH/3T3 and Tg/Tg). We evaluated the toxicity (MTT and clonogenic assay), cell cycle arrest, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Both cell lines coped with oxMWCNTs even at high doses. oxMWCNTS_HT acted as pro-oxidants in Tg/Tg cells and as antioxidants in NIH/3T3 cells. These findings suggest that oxMWCNTs could evolve into a promising nanocarrier suitable for targeted drug delivery in the future.

A high-performance aromatic thermosetting copolyester containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ATSP-MWNTs) was synthesized, characterized, and tribologically tested against cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy) as a potential replacement for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in artificial joints. By investigating the tribological properties of ATSP-MWNTs, crosslinked UHMWPE vs CoCrMo alloy, it was found that ATSP-MWNTs exhibited a lower and more stable friction coefficient and negligible wear. Unlike the case of ATSP-MWNTs, an obvious wear was present for UHMWPE. It is believed that transfer films in ATSP-MWNTs help to stabilize and decrease friction and wear. In addition, large and aggregated particles of UHMWPE seem to contribute to an increase in friction and wear.

The thiol compound 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a potential cathode material. The redox reactions of the mentioned thiol compound are slow at room temperature but can be enhanced using electron transfer mediators. The electrochemical oxidation of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole on the surface of carbon electrodes modified with Ruthenium(III) Schiff base complex was studied by voltammetric methods and amperometric flow injection analysis. The electrocatalytic properties of Ruthenium(III) Schiff base complex on glassy carbon and screen printed carbon electrodes are enhanced by the addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and Nafion. Voltammetric studies showed that anodic oxidation of DMcT on a modified glassy carbon electrode occurs at a potential of +0.28 V vs. Ag/AgCl in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 6.50). Flow injection amperometric measurements were performed at +0.20 V vs. Ag/AgCl in Britton-Robinson buffer solutions pH 6.50 at a 0.40 cm3 min–1 flow rate. The results of amperometric measurements for modified screen printed and glassy carbon electrodes showed that the screen printed electrode had a lower value of detection limit (0.38 mg dm–3) and quantification (1.28 mg dm–3), and a linear dynamic range from 1 to 500 mg dm–3 of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole. Modified glassy carbon electrode provided a linear dynamic range up to 750 mg dm–3 of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole with a detection limit of 3.90 mg dm–3 and quantification of 13.20 mg dm–3., 2,5-dimerkapto-1,3,4-tiadiazol (DMcT) je tiolni spoj i potencijalni katodni materijal. Redoks-reakcije navedenog tiolnog spoja sporo se odvijaju pri sobnoj temperaturi, ali se mogu ubrzati upotrebom medijatora za prijenos elektrona. Elektrokemijska oksidacija DMcT na površini ugljikovih elektroda modificiranih rutenijevim(III) kompleksom sa Schiffovim bazama, ispitana je voltametrijskim metodama i amperometrijskom analizom s injektiranjem u protok. Elektrokatalitička svojstva rutenij(III) kompleksa sa Schiffovim bazama na elektrodi od staklastog ugljika i printanoj ugljikovoj elektrodi poboljšana su dodavanjem višeslojnih ugljikovih nanocjevčica i Nafiona. Voltametrijska ispitivanja pokazala su da se anodna oksidacija DMcT na modificiranoj elektrodi od staklastog ugljika odvija na potencijalu od +0,28 V u odnosu na Ag/AgCl u Britton-Robinsonovom puferu (pH 6,50). Amperometrijska mjerenja provedena su na +0,20 V u odnosu na Ag/AgCl u Britton-Robinson puferu pH 6,50 pri brzini protoka od 0,40 cm3 min–1. Rezultati amperometrijskih mjerenja, za modificiranu elektrodu od staklastog ugljika i printanu ugljikovu elektrodu, pokazali su da printana ugljikova elektroda ima nižu vrijednost granice detekcije (0,38 mg dm–3) i kvantifikacije (1,28 mg dm–3) te linearni dinamički raspon od 1 do 500 mg dm–3 DMcT. Modificirana elektroda od staklastog ugljika pokazala je linearni dinamički raspon do 750 mg dm–3 za DMcT, granicu detekcije 3,90 mg dm–3 i kvantifikacije 13,20 mg dm–3.

Protein is a kind of basic substance that constitutes a life body. The determination of protein is very important for the research of biology, medicine, and other fields. Lysozyme is relatively small and simple in structure among all kinds of proteins, so it is often used as a standard target detector in the study of aptamer sensor for protein detection. In this paper, a lysozyme electrochemical sensor based on aptamer competition mechanism is proposed. We have successfully prepared a signal weakening electrochemical sensor based on the lysozyme aptamer competition mechanism. The carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified on the glassy carbon electrode, and the complementary aptamer DNA with amino group was connected to MWCNTs. Because of the complementary DNA of daunomycin into the electrode, the electrochemical signal is generated. When there is a target, the aptamer binds to lysozyme with higher binding power, and the original complementary chain breaks down, resulting in the loss of daunomycin inserted into the double chain and the weakening of electrochemical signal. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to determine lysozyme, the response range was 1–500 nM, the correlation coefficient was 0.9995, and the detection limit was 0.5 nM. In addition, the proposed sensor has good selectivity and anti-interference.

A membrane composed of polyethylene terephthalate nanofiber and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PET NF-MWCNTs) composite is used to adsorb methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to study the surface properties of the adsorbent. Several parameters affecting dye adsorption (pH, MB dye initial concentration, PET NF-MWCNTs dose, and contact time) are optimized for optimal removal efficiency (R, %) by using the Taguchi L25 (54) Orthogonal Array approach. According to the ANOVA results, pH has the highest contributing percentage at 71.01%, suggesting it has the most significant impact on removal efficiency. The adsorbent dose is the second most affected (12.08%), followed by the MB dye initial concentration of 5.91%, and the least affected is the contact time (1.81%). In addition, experimental findings confirm that the Langmuir isotherm is well-fitted, suggesting a monolayer capping of MB dye on the PET-NF-MWCNT surface with a maximum adsorption capacity of 7.047 mg g−1. Also, the kinetic results are well-suited to the pseudo-second-order model. There is a good agreement between the calculated (qe) and experimental values for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Carbon capture is one of the important methods to achieve carbon neutrality. In this paper, a simple and reliable method for the preparation of poly(anthraquinone)/multi-walled carbon nanotube composites (PAQ/MWCNTs) for capturing carbon dioxide is proposed. Using constant magnetic stirring, 1,4-anthraquinone (1,4-AQ) was allowed to accumulate on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) substrates via π–π. The poly(anthraquinone)/multi-walled carbon nanotube composites were produced by this continuous process. Besides, the carbon cloth electrode prepared from PAQ/MWCNTs composites was subjected to redox potentials for carbon dioxide capture. Results showed that PAQ/MWCNTs composites had good redox reversibility, their carbon dioxide capture capacity was 7.80 mmol·g−1 while the material utilization rate reaches reached 73.4%.

In this paper, a stainless steel fiber coated electropolymerized aniline, without and with carbon nanotubes (SS/PANI and SS/PANI/CNT), along with CNTs modified carbon paste electrodes (CPEs), were prepared. The electrodes were characterized by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and applied for the detection of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). For all the electrodes, the oxidative peak current showed a linear dependence on the 4-CP concentration in the range of 0.05–0.5 mmol/L with R2 ≥ 0.991. SS/PANI/CNT electrodes showed greater sensitivity for the detection of the 4-CP than the SS/PANI and CPEs. For all of the aniline-based stainless steel electrodes, both the LOD and LOQ decreased with the increase in the number of electropolymerization cycles. The lowest LOD (0.38 µmol/L) and LOQ (1.26 µmol/L) were observed for the SS/PANI/CNT electrode modified in aniline solution during 30 cycles. The methods were successfully applied to the analysis of 4-CP in real samples (tap water and river water). The results demonstrated the good agreement of the added and found concentrations of the 4-CP. The recovery and precision were from 95.12% to 102.24% and from 1.53% to 6.79%, respectively. The proposed electrodes exhibited acceptable reproducibility, admirable stability, and adequate repeatability and showed potential for the analysis of 4-CP in water.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grown on a stainless-steel foil by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The MWCNTs were functionalized with carboxylic groups (COOH) on their surfaces by using oxidation and acid (3:1 H2SO4/HNO3) treatments for improving the solubility property of them in the solvent. The functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) were conducted to prepare the solution by continuous stir in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and Triton X-100. The solution was deposited onto a bendable substrate such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a fabricated silver interdigitated electrode for application in a room-temperature gas sensor. A homemade-doctor blade coater, an UNO R3 Arduino board and a L298N motor driver are presented as a suitable system for screen printing the solution onto the gas-sensing substrates. The different contents of f-MWCNTs embedded in PEDOT:PSS were compared in the gas response to ammonia (NH3), ethanol (C2H5OH), benzene (C6H6), and acetone (C3H6O) vapors. The results demonstrate that the 3.0% v/v of f-MWCNT solution dissolved in 87.8% v/v of PEDOT:PSS, 5.4% v/v of DMSO, 3.6% v/v of EG and 0.2% v/v of Triton X-100 shows the highest response to 80 ppm NH3. Finally, the reduction in the NH3 response under heavy substrate-bending is also discussed.

A unique approach was utilized to develop multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) silver (Ag) membranes. MWCNTs were impregnated with 1 wt% Ag loading, which resulted in a homogeneous dispersion of Ag in MWCNTs. MWCNTs impregnated with Ag were then uniaxially compacted at two different pressures of 80 MPa and 120 MPa to form a compact membrane. Compacted membranes were then sintered at two different temperatures of 800 °C and 900 °C to bind Ag particles with MWCNTs as Ag particles also act as a welding agent for CNTs. The powder mixture was characterized by FESEM, thermogravimetric analysis, and XRD, while the developed samples were characterized by calculating the porosity of membrane samples, contact angle, water flux and a diametral compression test. The developed membranes showed overall large water flux, while maximum porosity was found to decrease as the compaction load and sintering temperature increased. The mechanical strength of the membranes was found to increase as the compaction load increased. The hydrophilicity of the membranes remained unchanged after the addition of Ag particles. The developed membranes would be useful for removing a variety of contaminants from water.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were grown directly on a metal substrate with the assistance of Pt using a chemical vapor deposition method. In addition, the growth mechanism of Pt-assisted catalytic CNT was discussed. MWNTs were characterized by SEM, TEM, AFM, Raman, and EDS, and the field emission (FE) properties were investigated, comparing with the direct grown MWNTs. The results showed that CNTs could not been synthesized by Pt particles alone under the experimental condition, but Pt may accelerate the decomposition of the carbon source gas, i.e., assisting MWNT growth with other catalysts. The Pt-assisted MWNTs were longer with larger diameters of around 80 nm and possessed better structural qualities with very few catalyst particles inside. Improved field emission properties were demonstrated for the Pt-assisted MWNTs with lower turn-on fields (for 0.01 mA·cm−2 current density) of 2.0 V·μm−1 and threshold field (for 10 mA·cm−2 current density) of 3.5 V·μm−1, as well as better stability under a long-term test of 80 h (started at 3.0 mA for the Pt-assisted emitter and 3.25 mA for the direct grown emitter). This work demonstrated a promising approach to develop high performance CNT field emitters for device applications.

Using the method of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a comparative analysis of the structure and chemical state of multi-walled carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen during their synthesis, as well as by high-dose irradiation with nitrogen ions, is carried out. It is shown that the chemical state of nitrogen in the walls of MWCNTs doped with various methods differs significantly. It was found that the use of ion irradiation allows one to obtain MWСNTs with a higher nitrogen concentration in the structure of the outer walls. However, there is a significant increase in the degree of imperfection of the crystal structure of the walls of carbon nanotubes and the formation of oxygencontaining functional groups. The features of the chemical state of nitrogen in the walls of MWCNTs using various alloying methods are established. The results obtained in this work can be used to develop methods for modifying the electronic structure of carbon nanostructured materials.
