Every spring a huge number of passerines cross the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea on their way to their breeding grounds. Stopover sites after such extended barriers where birds can rest, refuel, and find shelter from adverse weather, are of crucial importance for the outcome of their migration. Stopover habitat selection used by migrating birds depends on landscape context, habitat patch characteristics, as well as on the particular energetic conditions and needs of individual birds, but it is still poorly investigated. We focused on a long-distance migrating passerine, the woodchat shrike, in order to investigate for the first time the species' habitat selection at a spring stopover site (island of Antikythira, Greece) after the crossing of the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea. We implemented radio-tracking, color-ringing, and visual behavioral observations to collect data on microhabitat use. Generalized Linear Mixed Models were developed to identify the species' most preferred microhabitat during its stopover on this low human disturbed island. We found that high maquis vegetation surrounded by low vegetation was chosen as perches for hunting. Moreover, high maquis vegetation appeared to facilitate hunting attempts toward the ground, the most frequently observed foraging strategy. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of conservation practices for the woodchat shrike and their stopover sites on Mediterranean islands.

We examined ringing recovery data of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni in order to analyse its migration patterns and philopatry rates in Eastern Europe. In addition, we extracted counts of migrating birds from online databases and studied the use of the flyway as well as the phenology of both spring and autumn migrations through Greece. Birds appeared to migrate in the same mean direction in spring and autumn through the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas. During spring, movements took place on a broad front from March until mid- May with a peak in mid-April; in autumn, birds migrated through Greece on a narrower front from early August to early October, with most of individuals passing through Greece in mid-September. Finally, philopatry rates were higher for adults, while juvenile birds dispersed more often and at longer distances, up to 974 km away. Our results on migration patterns generally agree with those in other studies, but we found some evidence of long-distance premigratory movements towards mainland Greece that could also shape the narrower front migration in autumn. In addition, long distance dispersal movements of juveniles in southeastern Europe, where Lesser Kestrel populations show a fragmented distribution, could facilitate gene flow between populations, thus avoiding the negative effects of mating with genetically similar individuals.

In this study, we examined the spring migration phenology and arrival body mass and fat score of two long-distance migrants, the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler Phylloscopus orientalisand the Semi-collared Flycatcher Ficedula semitorquataat a small Greek island. Our data indicate a regular and early spring passage of both species through the area, with the Semi-collared Flycatcher peaking in late March and early April and the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler about a week later. The arrival body masses of both species were lower than any other mean value of body mass previously reported. This, along with the low fat loads of both species, indicates that the birds' reserves are depleted after crossing the Mediterranean Sea and suggests that they had probably not refuelled after the desert crossing.

With more than 80% of the species global population breeding in Greece, Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae) is reported to be the most important bird species in the country. A national population survey was conducted during the breeding seasons 2004–2006 in order to assess the species' breeding distribution and population size. This census was the first of its kind and was part of a global population survey, involving more than 80 field workers. Standard field protocols, described in the International Species Action Plan, and a GIS interactive database were developed. Data were stored and spatially explored in conjunction to historical information and past records. A total of about 17,660 falcons were counted or an estimated 12,300 breeding pairs, which were concentrated in six major regions, i.e., northeast Aegean, Sporades, east Cyclades, Antikythira, southwest Dodecanese and the satellite islets of eastern Crete. Compared to previous descriptions of breeding colonies and population status, spatial variation in site occupancy was detected with a population decline in one of the aforementioned regions and an apparent increase in all the rest. The results of this national survey, expected to be repeated every 10 years, provided guidance for reviewing the conservation status of Eleonora’s Falcon in Greece and baseline information for future monitoring of its population.
