Hydrogen is vital for sectors like chemicals and others, driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions. Proton Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) is a key technology for the production of green hydrogen under fluctuating conditions of renewable power sources. However, due to the scarcity of noble metal materials, the stability of the anode catalyst layer under dynamic operating conditions must be better understood. Model-aided investigation approaches are essential due to the back-box nature of the electrochemical system and the high costs of experimental long-term testing. In this work, a temporal multiscale method based on a Heterogeneous technique is applied to reduce the computational effort of simulating long-term degradation, focused on catalyst dissolution. Such an approach characterizes the problem in fast locally periodic processes, influenced by the dynamic operation and slow processes attributed to the gradual degradation of the catalyst layer. A mechanistic model that includes the oxygen evolution reaction, catalyst dissolution and hydrogen permeation from the cathode to the anode side is hypothesized and implemented. The multiscale approach notably reduces computational effort of simulation from hours to mere minutes. This efficiency gain is ascribed to the limited evolution of Slow-Scale variables during each period of time of the Fast-Scale variables. Consequently, simulation of the fast processes is required only until local periodicity is achieved within each Slow-Scale time step. Thus, the developed temporal multiscale approach proves to be highly effective in accelerating parameter estimation and predictive simulation steps, as could be verified through the results of this article. The pressure-correction method is a well established approach for simulating unsteady, incompressible fluids. It is well-known that implicit discretization of the time derivative in the momentum equation e.g. using a backward differentiation formula with explicit handling of the nonlinear term results in a conditionally stable method. In certain scenarios, employing explicit time integration in the momentum equation can be advantageous, as it avoids the need to solve for a system matrix involving each differential operator. Additionally, we will demonstrate that the fully discrete method can be expressed in the form of simple matrix-vector multiplications allowing for efficient implementation on modern and highly parallel acceleration hardware. Despite being a common practice in various commercial codes, there is currently no available literature on error analysis for this scenario. In this work, we conduct a theoretical analysis of both implicit and two explicit variants of the pressure-correction method in a fully discrete setting. We demonstrate to which extend the presented implicit and explicit methods exhibit conditional stability. Furthermore, we establish a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) type condition for the explicit scheme and show that the explicit variant demonstrate the same asymptotic behavior as the implicit variant when the CFL condition is satisfied.

Dynamics at low Reynolds numbers experiences recent revival in the fields of biophysics and active matter. While in bulk isotropic fluids it is exhaustively studied, this is less so in anisotropic fluids and in confined situations. Here, we combine the latter two by studying the rotation of a disk-like inclusion in a uniaxially anisotropic, globally oriented, incompressible two-dimensional fluid film. In terms of a perturbative expansion in parameters that quantify anisotropies in viscosity and in additional linear friction with a supporting substrate or other type of confinement, we derive analytical expressions for the resulting hydrodynamic flow and pressure fields as well as for the resistance and mobility coefficients of the rotating disk. It turns out that, in contrast to translational motion, the solutions remain well-behaved also in the absence of the additional linear friction. Comparison with results from finite-element simulations show very good agreement with those from our analytical calculations. Besides applications to describe technological systems, for instance, in the area of microfluidics and thin cells of aligned nematic liquid crystals, our solutions are important for quantitative theoretical approaches to fluid membranes and thin films in general featuring a preferred direction., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

In this work, we present a comparison between color spaces namely YUV, LAB, RGB and their effect on learned image compression. For this we use the structure and color based learned image codec (SLIC) from our prior work, which consists of two branches - one for the luminance component (Y or L) and another for chrominance components (UV or AB). However, for the RGB variant we input all 3 channels in a single branch, similar to most learned image codecs operating in RGB. The models are trained for multiple bitrate configurations in each color space. We report the findings from our experiments by evaluating them on various datasets and compare the results to state-of-the-art image codecs. The YUV model performs better than the LAB variant in terms of MS-SSIM with a Bj{\o}ntegaard delta bitrate (BD-BR) gain of 7.5\% using VTM intra-coding mode as the baseline. Whereas the LAB variant has a better performance than YUV model in terms of CIEDE2000 having a BD-BR gain of 8\%. Overall, the RGB variant of SLIC achieves the best performance with a BD-BR gain of 13.14\% in terms of MS-SSIM and a gain of 17.96\% in CIEDE2000 at the cost of a higher model complexity., Comment: Accepter pre-print version for ICIP 2024

Adaptive finite elements combined with geometric multigrid solvers are one of the most efficient numerical methods for problems such as the instationary Navier-Stokes equations. Yet despite their efficiency, computations remain expensive and the simulation of, for example, complex flow problems can take many hours or days. GPUs provide an interesting avenue to speed up the calculations due to their very large theoretical peak performance. However, the large degree of parallelism and non-standard API make the use of GPUs in scientific computing challenging. In this work, we develop a GPU acceleration for the adaptive finite element library Gascoigne and study its effectiveness for different systems of partial differential equations. Through the systematic formulation of all computations as linear algebra operations, we can employ GPU-accelerated linear algebra libraries, which simplifies the implementation and ensures the maintainability of the code while achieving very efficient GPU utilizations. Our results for a transport-diffusion equation, linear elasticity, and the instationary Navier-Stokes equations show substantial speedups of up to 20X compared to multi-core CPU implementations.

This work reviews goal-oriented a posteriori error control, adaptivity and solver control for finite element approximations to boundary and initial-boundary value problems for stationary and non-stationary partial differential equations, respectively. In particular, coupled field problems with different physics may require simultaneously the accurate evaluation of several quantities of interest, which is achieved with multi-goal oriented error control. Sensitivity measures are obtained by solving an adjoint problem. Error localization is achieved with the help of a partition-of-unity. We also review and extend theoretical results for efficiency and reliability by employing a saturation assumption. The resulting adaptive algorithms allow to balance discretization and non-linear iteration errors, and are demonstrated for four applications: Poisson's problem, non-linear elliptic boundary value problems, stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and regularized parabolic $p$-Laplace initial-boundary value problems. Therein, different finite element discretizations in two different software libraries are utilized, which are partially accompanied with open-source implementations on GitHub.

To make progress towards the development of a theory on the motion of inclusions in thin structured films and membranes, we here consider as an initial step a circular disk in a two-dimensional, uniaxially anisotropic fluid layer. We assume overdamped dynamics, incompressibility of the fluid, and global alignment of the axis of anisotropy. Motion within this layer is affected by additional linear friction with the environment, for instance, a supporting substrate. We investigate the induced flows in the fluid when the disk is translated parallel or perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy. Moreover, expressions for corresponding mobilities and resistance coefficients of the disk are derived. Our results are obtained within the framework of a perturbative expansion in the parameters that quantify the anisotropy of the fluid. Good agreement is found for moderate anisotropy when compared to associated results from finite-element simulations. At pronounced anisotropy, the induced flow fields are still predicted qualitatively correctly by the perturbative theory, although quantitative deviations arise. The cryosphere plays a significant role in Earth's climate system. Therefore, an accurate simulation of sea ice is of great importance to improve climate projections. To enable higher resolution simulations, graphics processing units (GPUs) have become increasingly attractive as they offer higher floating point peak performance and better energy efficiency compared to CPUs. However, making use of this theoretical peak performance, which is based on massive data parallelism, usually requires more care and effort in the implementation. In recent years, a number of frameworks have become available that promise to simplify general purpose GPU programming. In this work, we compare multiple such frameworks, including CUDA, SYCL, Kokkos and PyTorch, for the parallelization of \nextsim, a finite-element based dynamical core for sea ice. We propose the structure and color based learned image codec (SLIC) in which the task of compression is split into that of luminance and chrominance. The deep learning model is built with a novel multi-scale architecture for Y and UV channels in the encoder, where the features from various stages are combined to obtain the latent representation. An autoregressive context model is employed for backward adaptation and a hyperprior block for forward adaptation. Various experiments are carried out to study and analyze the performance of the proposed model, and to compare it with other image codecs. We also illustrate the advantages of our method through the visualization of channel impulse responses, latent channels and various ablation studies. We describe and analyze a hybrid finite element/neural network method for predicting solutions of partial differential equations. The methodology is designed for obtaining fine scale fluctuations from neural networks in a local manner. The network is capable of locally correcting a coarse finite element solution towards a fine solution taking the source term and the coarse approximation as input. Key observation is the dependency between quality of predictions and the size of training set which consists of different source terms and corresponding fine & coarse solutions. We provide the a priori error analysis of the method together with the stability analysis of the neural network. The numerical experiments confirm the capability of the network predicting fine finite element solutions. We also illustrate the generalization of the method to problems where test and training domains differ from each other.

We present a priori error estimates for a multirate time-stepping scheme for coupled differential equations. The discretization is based on Galerkin methods in time using two different time meshes for two parts of the problem. We aim at surface coupled multiphysics problems like two-phase flows. Special focus is on the handling of the interface coupling to guarantee a coercive formulation as key to optimal order error estimates. In a sequence of increasing complexity, we begin with the coupling of two ordinary differential equations, coupled heat conduction equation, and finally a coupled Stokes problem. For this we show optimal multi-rate estimates in velocity and a suboptimal result in pressure. The a priori estimates prove that the multirate method decouples the two subproblems exactly. This is the basis for adaptive methods which can choose optimal lattices for the respective subproblems.

We extend and analyze the deep neural network multigrid solver (DNN-MG) for the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions. The idea of the method is to augment a finite element simulation on coarse grids with fine scale information obtained using deep neural networks. The neural network operates locally on small patches of grid elements. The local approach proves to be highly efficient, since the network can be kept (relatively) small and since it can be applied in parallel on all grid patches. However, the main advantage of the local approach is the inherent generalizability of the method. Since the network only processes data of small sub-areas, it never ``sees'' the global problem and thus does not learn false biases. We describe the method with a focus on the interplay between the finite element method and deep neural networks. Further, we demonstrate with numerical examples the excellent efficiency of the hybrid approach, which allows us to achieve very high accuracy with a coarse grid and thus reduce the computation time by orders of magnitude., Comment: 40 pages, 24 figures, 11 tables. In this work, we propose and computationally investigate a monolithic space-time multirate scheme for coupled problems. The novelty lies in the monolithic formulation of the multirate approach as this requires a careful design of the functional framework, corresponding discretization, and implementation. Our method of choice is a tensor-product Galerkin space-time discretization. The developments are carried out for both prototype interface- and volume coupled problems such as coupled wave-heat-problems and a displacement equation coupled to Darcy flow in a poro-elastic medium. The latter is applied to the well-known Mandel's benchmark and a three-dimensional footing problem. The quasi-random discrete ordinates method (QRDOM) is here proposed for the approximation of transport problems. Its central idea is to explore a quasi Monte Carlo integration within the classical source iteration technique. It preserves the main characteristics of the discrete ordinates method, but it has the advantage of providing mitigated ray effect solutions. The QRDOM is discussed in details for applications to one-group transport problems with isotropic scattering in rectangular domains. The method is tested against benchmark problems for which DOM solutions are known to suffer from the ray effects. We analyze a hybrid method that enriches coarse grid finite element solutions with fine scale fluctuations obtained from a neural network. The idea stems from the Deep Neural Network Multigrid Solver (DNN-MG), (Margenberg et al., J Comput Phys 460:110983, 2022; A neural network multigrid solver for the Navier-Stokes equations) which embeds a neural network into a multigrid hierarchy by solving coarse grid levels directly and predicting the corrections on fine grid levels locally (e.g. on small patches that consist of several cells) by a neural network. Such local designs are quite appealing, as they allow a very good generalizability. In this work, we formalize the method and describe main components of the a-priori error analysis. Moreover, we numerically investigate how the size of training set affects the solution quality.

Deep learning based image compression has gained a lot of momentum in recent times. To enable a method that is suitable for image compression and subsequently extended to video compression, we propose a novel deep learning model architecture, where the task of image compression is divided into two sub-tasks, learning structural information from luminance channel and color from chrominance channels. The model has two separate branches to process the luminance and chrominance components. The color difference metric CIEDE2000 is employed in the loss function to optimize the model for color fidelity. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach and compare the performance to other codecs. Additionally, the visualization and analysis of latent channel impulse response is performed.

Non-intrusive model reduction is a promising solution to system dynamics prediction, especially in cases where data are collected from experimental campaigns or proprietary software simulations. In this work, we present a method for non-intrusive model reduction applied to Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems. The approach is based on the a priori known sparsity of the full-order system operators, which is dictated by grid adjacency information. In order to enforce this type of sparsity, we solve a local, regularized least-squares problem for each degree of freedom on a grid, considering only the training data from adjacent degrees of freedom, thus making computation and storage of the inferred full-order operators feasible. After constructing the non-intrusive, sparse full-order model, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is used for its projection to a reduced dimension subspace and thus the construction of a reduced-order model (ROM). The methodology is applied to the challenging Hron-Turek benchmark FSI3, for Re = 200. A physics-informed, non-intrusive ROM is constructed to predict the two-way coupled dynamics of a solid with a deformable, slender tail, subject to an incompressible, laminar flow. Results considering the accuracy and predictive capabilities of the inferred reduced models are discussed.

Due to their high resolution, dynamic medical 2D+t and 3D+t volumes from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance tomography (MR) reach a size which makes them very unhandy for teleradiologic applications. A lossless scalable representation offers the advantage of a down-scaled version which can be used for orientation or previewing, while the remaining information for reconstructing the full resolution is transmitted on demand. The wavelet transform offers the desired scalability. A very high quality of the lowpass sub-band is crucial in order to use it as a down-scaled representation. We propose an approach based on compensated wavelet lifting for obtaining a scalable representation of dynamic CT and MR volumes with very high quality. The mesh compensation is feasible to model the displacement in dynamic volumes which is mainly given by expansion and contraction of tissue over time. To achieve this, we propose an optimized estimation of the mesh compensation parameters to optimally fit for dynamic volumes. Within the lifting structure, the inversion of the motion compensation is crucial in the update step. We propose to take this inversion directly into account during the estimation step and can improve the quality of the lowpass sub-band by 0.63 and 0.43 dB on average for our tested dynamic CT and MR volumes at the cost of an increase of the rate by 2.4% and 1.2% on average.

Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) pose computationally expensive problems of high practical interest to several engineering fields. In this work we develop a non-intrusive, reduced-order modelling methodology for two-dimensional (2D) VIV simulations. We consider an elliptical, non-deformable solid mounted on springs, subject to a laminar, incompressible flow. Approximating the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) formulation, a discrete-time, quadratic-bilinear data-driven model structure is assigned for the velocity flowfield prediction. The full-order, data-driven model operators have a predefined sparsity pattern, following the adjacency-based sparsity of the discretized ALE-NS operators. Thus, the data-driven operators inference requires solving many low-dimensional least squares problems, isolating the contribution of "nearest neighbours" for each degree of freedom. Numerical aspects such as data centering and regularization are extensively discussed. With this approach, Dirichlet boundary conditions at the inlet and the fluid/solid interface can be enforced on the full-order, non-intrusive level. Consequently, a non-intrusive reduced-order model (ROM) for the velocity flowfield is obtained after linear projection. The resulting ROM is coupled with the first-principle, 2D solid oscillation equations and is simulated using an implicit time integration scheme. The coupled solution is then mapped on the deformed grid through the inverse ALE map. This methodology is showcased for two testcases, at different Reynolds numbers (Re = 90, 180). Numerical results indicate a successful coupling between the data-driven velocity flowfield and the solid oscillation, with prediction errors of less than 3% for both the flowfield and the solid oscillation. A comparative study with respect to the ROM dimension indicates the robustness and potential of the approach.

Factorized in the lifting structure, the wavelet transform can easily be extended by arbitrary compensation methods. Thereby, the transform can be adapted to displacements in the signal without losing the ability of perfect reconstruction. This leads to an improvement of scalability. In temporal direction of dynamic medical 3-D+t volumes from Computed Tomography, displacement is mainly given by expansion and compression of tissue. We show that these smooth movements can be well compensated with a mesh-based method. We compare the properties of triangle and quadrilateral meshes. We also show that with a mesh-based compensation approach coding results are comparable to the common slice wise coding with JPEG 2000 while a scalable representation in temporal direction can be achieved.

Lost image areas with different size and arbitrary shape can occur in many scenarios such as error-prone communication, depth-based image rendering or motion compensated wavelet lifting. The goal of image reconstruction is to restore these lost image areas as close to the original as possible. Frequency selective extrapolation is a block-based method for efficiently reconstructing lost areas in images. So far, the actual shape of the lost area is not considered directly. We propose a centroid adaption to enhance the existing frequency selective extrapolation algorithm that takes the shape of lost areas into account. To enlarge the test set for evaluation we further propose a method to generate arbitrarily shaped lost areas. On our large test set, we obtain an average reconstruction gain of 1.29 dB.

Lossless image coding is a crucial task especially in the medical area, e.g., for volumes from Computed Tomography or Magnetic Resonance Tomography. Besides lossless coding, compensated wavelet lifting offers a scalable representation of such huge volumes. While compensation methods increase the details in the lowpass band, they also vary the characteristics of the wavelet coefficients, so an adaption of the coefficient coder should be considered. We propose a simple invertible extension for JPEG 2000 that can reduce the filesize for lossless coding of the highpass band by 0.8% on average with peak rate saving of 1.1%.

For scalable coding, a high quality of the lowpass band of a wavelet transform is crucial when it is used as a downscaled version of the original signal. However, blur and motion can lead to disturbing artifacts. By incorporating feasible compensation methods directly into the wavelet transform, the quality of the lowpass band can be improved. The displacement in dynamic medical 3-D+t volumes from Computed Tomography is mainly given by expansion and compression of tissue over time and can be modeled well by mesh-based methods. We extend a 2-D mesh-based compensation method to three dimensions to obtain a volume compensation method that can additionally compensate deforming displacements in the third dimension. We show that a 3-D mesh can obtain a higher quality of the lowpass band by 0.28 dB with less than 40% of the model parameters of a comparable 2-D mesh. Results from lossless coding with JPEG 2000 3D and SPECK3D show that the compensated subbands using a 3-D mesh need about 6% less data compared to using a 2-D mesh.

The prediction step is a very important part of hybrid video codecs. In this contribution, a novel spatio-temporal prediction algorithm is introduced. For this, the prediction is carried out in two steps. Firstly, a preliminary temporal prediction is conducted by motion compensation. Afterwards, spatial refinement is carried out for incorporating spatial redundancies from already decoded neighboring blocks. Thereby, the spatial refinement is achieved by applying Non-Local Means de-noising to the union of the motion compensated block and the already decoded blocks. Including the spatial refinement into H.264/AVC, a rate reduction of up to 14 % or respectively a gain of up to 0.7 dB PSNR compared to unrefined motion compensated prediction can be achieved.

Multi-view image acquisition systems with two or more cameras can be rather costly due to the number of high resolution image sensors that are required. Recently, it has been shown that by covering a low resolution sensor with a non-regular sampling mask and by using an efficient algorithm for image reconstruction, a high resolution image can be obtained. In this paper, a stereo image reconstruction setup for multi-view scenarios is proposed. A scene is captured by a pair of non-regular sampling sensors and by incorporating information from the adjacent view, the reconstruction quality can be increased. Recently, it has been shown that a high resolution image can be obtained without the usage of a high resolution sensor. The main idea has been that a low resolution sensor is covered with a non-regular sampling mask followed by a reconstruction of the incomplete high resolution image captured this way. In this paper, a multi-frame reconstruction approach is proposed where a video is taken by a non-regular sampling sensor and fully reconstructed afterwards. By utilizing the temporal correlation between neighboring frames, the reconstruction quality can be further enhanced. Increasing spatial image resolution is an often required, yet challenging task in image acquisition. Recently, it has been shown that it is possible to obtain a high resolution image by covering a low resolution sensor with a non-regular sampling mask. Due to the masking, however, some pixel information in the resulting high resolution image is not available and has to be reconstructed by an efficient image reconstruction algorithm in order to get a fully reconstructed high resolution image. In this paper, the influence of different sampling masks with a reduced randomness of the non-regularity on the image reconstruction process is evaluated. Simulation results show that it is sufficient to use sampling masks that are non-regular only on a smaller scale. These sampling masks lead to a visually noticeable gain in PSNR compared to arbitrary chosen sampling masks which are non-regular over the whole image sensor size. We introduce an unfitted finite element method with Lagrange-multipliers to study an Eulerian time stepping scheme for moving domain problems applied to a model problem where the domain motion is implicit to the problem. We consider a parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) in the bulk domain, and the domain motion is described by an ordinary differential equation (ODE), coupled to the bulk partial differential equation through the transfer of forces at the moving interface. The discretisation is based on an unfitted finite element discretisation on a time-independent mesh. The method-of-lines time discretisation is enabled by an implicit extension of the bulk solution through additional stabilisation, as introduced by Lehrenfeld & Olshanskii (ESAIM: M2AN, 53:585-614, 2019). The analysis of the coupled problem relies on the Lagrange-multiplier formulation, the fact that the Lagrange-multiplier solution is equal to the normal stress at the interface and that the motion of the interface is given through rigid body motion. This paper covers the complete stability analysis of the method and an error estimate in the energy norm, under an assumption on the discrete interface velocity. This includes the dynamic error in the domain motion resulting from the discretised ODE and the forces from the discretised PDE. To the best of our knowledge this is the first error analysis of this type of coupled moving domain problem in a fully Eulerian framework. Numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.

We analyze neural network solutions to partial differential equations obtained with Physics Informed Neural Networks. In particular, we apply tools of classical finite element error analysis to obtain conclusions about the error of the Deep Ritz method applied to the Laplace and the Stokes equations. Further, we develop an a posteriori error estimator for neural network approximations of partial differential equations. The proposed approach is based on the dual weighted residual estimator. It is destined to serve as a stopping criterion that guarantees the accuracy of the solution independently of the design of the neural network training. The result is equipped with computational examples for Laplace and Stokes problems.

Geometric confinements play an important role in many physical and biological processes and significantly affect the rheology and behavior of colloidal suspensions at low Reynolds numbers. On the basis of the linear Stokes equations, we investigate theoretically and computationally the viscous azimuthal flow induced by the slow rotation of a small spherical particle located in the vicinity of a rigid no-slip disk or inside a gap between two coaxially positioned rigid no-slip disks of the same radius. We formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic problem as a mixed-boundary-value problem in the whole fluid domain, which we subsequently transform into a system of dual integral equations. Near a stationary disk, we show that the resulting integral equation can be reduced into an elementary Abel integral equation that admits a unique analytical solution. Between two coaxially positioned stationary disks, we demonstrate that the flow problem can be transformed into a system of two Fredholm integral equations of the first kind. The latter are solved by means of numerical approaches. Using our solution, we further investigate the effect of the disks on the slow rotational motion of a colloidal particle and provide expressions of the hydrodynamic mobility as a function of the system geometry. A temporal homogenization approach for the numerical simulation of atherosclerotic plaque growth is extended to fully coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. The numerical results indicate that the two-scale approach yields significantly different results compared to a simple heuristic averaging, where only stationary long-scale FSI problems are solved, confirming the importance of incorporating stress variations on small time-scales. In the homogenization approach, a periodic fine-scale problem, which is periodic with respect to the heart beat, has to be solved for each long-scale time step. Even if no exact initial conditions are available, periodicity can be achieved within only 2-3 heart beats by simple time-stepping.

We investigate scaling and efficiency of the deep neural network multigrid method (DNN-MG). DNN-MG is a novel neural network-based technique for the simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations that combines an adaptive geometric multigrid solver, i.e. a highly efficient classical solution scheme, with a recurrent neural network with memory. The neural network replaces in DNN-MG one or multiple finest multigrid layers and provides a correction for the classical solve in the next time step. This leads to little degradation in the solution quality while substantially reducing the overall computational costs. At the same time, the use of the multigrid solver at the coarse scales allows for a compact network that is easy to train, generalizes well, and allows for the incorporation of physical constraints. Previous work on DNN-MG focused on the overall scheme and how to enforce divergence freedom in the solution. In this work, we investigate how the network size affects training and solution quality and the overall runtime of the computations. Our results demonstrate that larger networks are able to capture the flow behavior better while requiring only little additional training time. We consider non-spherical rigid body particles in an incompressible fluid in the regime where the particles are too large to assume that they are simply transported with the fluid without back-coupling and where the particles are also too small to make fully resolved direct numerical simulations feasible. Unfitted finite element methods with ghost-penalty stabilisation are well suited to fluid-structure-interaction problems as posed by this setting, due to the flexible and accurate geometry handling and for allowing topology changes in the geometry. In the computationally under resolved setting posed here, accurate computations of the forces by their boundary integral formulation are not viable. Furthermore, analytical laws are not available due to the shape of the particles. However, accurate values of the forces are essential for realistic motion of the particles. To obtain these forces accurately, we train an artificial deep neural network using data from prototypical resolved simulations. This network is then able to predict the force values based on information which can be obtained accurately in an under-resolved setting. As a result, we obtain forces on very coarse and under-resolved meshes which are on average an order of magnitude more accurate compared to the direct boundary-integral computation from the Navier-Stokes solution, leading to solid motion comparable to that obtained on highly resolved meshes that would substantially increase the simulation costs.

The simulation of partial differential equations is a central subject of numerical analysis and an indispensable tool in science, engineering and related fields. Existing approaches, such as finite elements, provide (highly) efficient tools but deep neural network-based techniques emerged in the last few years as an alternative with very promising results. We investigate the combination of both approaches for the approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations and to what extent structural properties such as divergence freedom can and should be respected. Our work is based on DNN-MG, a deep neural network multigrid technique, that we introduced recently and which uses a neural network to represent fine grid fluctuations not resolved by a geometric multigrid finite element solver. Although DNN-MG provides solutions with very good accuracy and is computationally highly efficient, we noticed that the neural network-based corrections substantially violate the divergence freedom of the velocity vector field. In this contribution, we discuss these findings and analyze three approaches to address the problem: a penalty term to encourage divergence freedom of the network output; a penalty term for the corrected velocity field; and a network that learns the stream function, i.e. the scalar potential of the divergence free velocity vector field and which hence yields by construction divergence free corrections. Our experimental results show that the third approach based on the stream function outperforms the other two and not only improves the divergence freedom but in particular also the overall fidelity of the simulation.

We evaluate a number of different finite element approaches for fluid-structure (contact) interaction problems against data from physical experiments. For this we take the data from experiments by Hagemeier [Mendeley Data, doi: 10.17632/mf27c92nc3.1]. This consists of trajectories of single particles falling through a highly viscous fluid and rebounding off the bottom fluid tank wall. The resulting flow is in the transitional regime between creeping and turbulent flows. This type of configuration is particularly challenging for numerical methods due to the large change of the fluid domain and the contact between the wall and particle. In the numerical simulations we consider both rigid body and linear elasticity models for the falling particles. In the first case, we compare results obtained with the well established Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) approach and a moving domain CutFEM method together with a simple and common approach for contact avoidance. For the full fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem with contact, we use a fully Eulerian approach in combination with a unified FSI-contact treatment using Nitsche's method. For higher computational efficiency we use the geometrical symmetry of the experimental set up to reformulate the FSI system into two spatial dimensions. Finally, we show full three dimensional ALE computations to study the effects of small perturbations in the initial state of the particle to investigate deviations from a perfectly vertical fall observed in the experiment. The methods are implemented in open-source finite element libraries and the results are made freely available to aide reproducibility.

An accurate prediction of the translational and rotational motion of particles suspended in a fluid is only possible if a complete set of correlations for the force coefficients of fluid-particle interaction is known. The present study is thus devoted to the derivation and validation of a new framework to determine the drag, lift, rotational and pitching torque coefficients for different non-spherical particles in a fluid flow. The motivation for the study arises from medical applications, where particles may have an arbitrary and complex shape. Here, it is usually not possible to derive accurate analytical models for predicting the different hydrodynamic forces. However, considering for example the various components of blood, their shape takes an important role in controlling several body functions such as control of blood viscosity or coagulation. Therefore, the presented model is designed to be applicable to a broad range of shapes. Another important feature of the suspensions occurring in medical and biological applications is the high number of particles. The modelling approach we propose can be efficiently used for simulations of solid-liquid suspensions with numerous particles. Based on resolved numerical simulations of prototypical particles we generate data to train a neural network which allows us to quickly estimate the hydrodynamic forces experienced by a specific particle immersed in a fluid.

The settling process and wall impact of large spherical particles in a stagnant, highly viscous fluid has been observed by means of high-speed shadow imaging. The particles included in this study vary in size and material properties: steel, polytetrafluorethylen (PTFE), polyoxymethylen (POM), or rubber. The corresponding terminal Reynolds numbers range from 333 to 4012, covering in principle the transitional and Newton regime for drag forces. For collision studies, the Stokes number just before impact is also relevant, and lies in the range 50 < St < 2250. The settling curves obtained experimentally are compared with numerical and analytical solutions. The latter has been derived on the basis of nominal terminal velocity and relaxation time for the Stokes and Newton regimes. A deviation between experimental results and analytical solution was observed in all cases where the terminal Reynolds number is larger than 300 and smaller than 1100. In this flow regime, the settling process of the spheres is already affected at a long distance from the impact object, leading to an early but significant deceleration. Moreover, a reduced settling velocity was observed along the whole trajectory for the PTFE particles with the lowest terminal Reynolds number. All processed datasets are available via the Mendeley Data repository. Two additional effects have been observed during this study. First, a bright region was detected around all PTFE spheres. It finally was found to be due to total light reflection around the sphere, but, to the best of our knowledge, this peculiarity has never been reported before. Being purely optical, this does not effect the settling behavior for PTFE. On the other hand, partial absorption of liquid at the particle surface was observed for rubber, leading to a reduced sedimentation velocity.

We present the deep neural network multigrid solver (DNN-MG) that we develop for the instationary Navier-Stokes equations. DNN-MG improves computational efficiency using a judicious combination of a geometric multigrid solver and a recurrent neural network with memory. DNN-MG uses the multi-grid method to classically solve on coarse levels while the neural network corrects interpolated solutions on fine ones, thus avoiding the increasingly expensive computations that would have to be performed there. This results in a reduction in computation time through DNN-MG's highly compact neural network. The compactness results from its design for local patches and the available coarse multigrid solutions that provides a "guide" for the corrections. A compact neural network with a small number of parameters also reduces training time and data. Furthermore, the network's locality facilitates generalizability and allows one to use DNN-MG trained on one mesh domain also on different ones. We demonstrate the efficacy of DNN-MG for variations of the 2D laminar flow around an obstacle. For these, our method significantly improves the solutions as well as lift and drag functionals while requiring only about half the computation time of a full multigrid solution. We also show that DNN-MG trained for the configuration with one obstacle can be generalized to other time dependent problems that can be solved efficiently using a geometric multigrid method., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

Fluid-structure interaction models are used to study how a material interacts with different fluids at different Reynolds numbers. Examining the same model not only for different fluids but also for different solids allows to optimize the choice of materials for construction even better. A possible answer to this demand is parameter-dependent discretization. Furthermore, low-rank techniques can reduce the complexity needed to compute approximations to parameter-dependent fluid-structure interaction discretizations. Low-rank methods have been applied to parameter-dependent linear fluid-structure interaction discretizations. The linearity of the operators involved allows to translate the resulting equations to a single matrix equation. The solution is approximated by a low-rank method. In this paper, we propose a new method that extends this framework to nonlinear parameter-dependent fluid-structure interaction problems by means of the Newton iteration. The parameter set is split into disjoint subsets. On each subset, the Newton approximation of the problem related to the upper median parameter is computed and serves as initial guess for one Newton step on the whole subset. This Newton step yields a matrix equation whose solution can be approximated by a low-rank method. The resulting method requires a smaller number of Newton steps if compared with a direct approach that applies the Newton iteration to the separate problems consecutively. In the experiments considered, the proposed method allows to compute a low-rank approximation up to twenty times faster than by the direct approach., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

The locally modified finite element method, which is introduced in [Frei, Richter: SINUM 52(2014), p. 2315-2334], is a simple fitted finite element method that is able to resolve weak discontinuities in interface problems. The method is based on a fixed structured coarse mesh, which is then refined into sub-elements to resolve an interior interface. In this work, we extend the locally modified finite element method {in two space dimensions} to second order using an isoparametric approach in the interface elements. Thereby we need to take care that the resulting curved edges do not lead to degenerate sub-elements. We prove optimal a priori error estimates in the $L^2$-norm and in a discrete energy norm. Finally, we present numerical examples to substantiate the theoretical findings.

We consider the dynamics of a parabolic and a hyperbolic equation coupled on a common interface and develop time-stepping schemes that can use different time-step sizes for each of the subproblems. The problem is formulated in a strongly coupled (monolithic) space-time framework. Coupling two different step sizes monolithically gives rise to large algebraic systems of equations where multiple states of the subproblems must be solved at once. For efficiently solving these algebraic systems, we inherit ideas from the partitioned regime and present two decoupling methods, namely a partitioned relaxation scheme and a shooting method. Furthermore, we develop an a posteriori error estimator serving as a mean for an adaptive time-stepping procedure. The goal is to optimally balance the time step sizes of the two subproblems. The error estimator is based on the dual weighted residual method and relies on the space-time Galerkin formulation of the coupled problem. As an example, we take a linear set-up with the heat equation coupled to the wave equation. We formulate the problem in a monolithic manner using the space-time framework. In numerical test cases, we demonstrate the efficiency of the solution process and we also validate the accuracy of the a posteriori error estimator and its use for controlling the time step sizes.

We investigate theoretically on the basis of the steady Stokes equations for a viscous incompressible fluid the flow induced by a Stokeslet located on the centre axis of two coaxially positioned rigid disks. The Stokeslet is directed along the centre axis. No-slip boundary conditions are assumed to hold at the surfaces of the disks. We perform the calculation of the associated Green's function in large parts analytically, reducing the spatial evaluation of the flow field to one-dimensional integrations amenable to numerical treatment. To this end, we formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic problem for the viscous flow surrounding the two disks as a mixed-boundary-value problem, which we then reduce into a system of four dual integral equations. We show the existence of viscous toroidal eddies arising in the fluid domain bounded by the two disks, manifested in the plane containing the centre axis through adjacent counterrotating eddies. Additionally, we probe the effect of the confining disks on the slow dynamics of a point-like particle by evaluating the hydrodynamic mobility function associated with axial motion. Thereupon, we assess the appropriateness of the commonly-employed superposition approximation and discuss its validity and applicability as a function of the geometrical properties of the system. Additionally, we complement our semi-analytical approach by finite-element computer simulations, which reveals a good agreement. Our results may find applications in guiding the design of microparticle-based sensing devices and electrokinetic transport in small scale capacitors.

We consider systems of ordinary differential equations with multiple scales in time. In general, we are interested in the long time horizon of a slow variable that is coupled to solution components that act on a fast scale. Although the fast scale variables are essential for the dynamics of the coupled problem, they are often of no interest in themselves. Recently we have proposed a temporal multiscale approach that fits into the framework of the heterogeneous multiscale method and that allows for efficient simulations with significant speedups. Fast and slow scales are decoupled by introducing local averages and by replacing fast scale contributions by localized periodic-in-time problems. Here, we generalize this multiscale approach to a larger class of problems but in particular, we derive an a posteriori error estimator based on the dual weighted residual method that allows for a splitting of the error into averaging error, error on the slow scale and error on the fast scale. We demonstrate the accuracy of the error estimator and also its use for adaptive control of a numerical multiscale scheme.

We study the impact of using fluid-structure interactions (FSI) to simulate blood flow in a large stenosed artery. We compare typical flow configurations using Navier-Stokes in a rigid geometry setting to a fully coupled FSI model. The relevance of vascular elasticity is investigated with respect to several questions of clinical importance. Namely, we study the effect of using FSI on the wall shear stress distribution, on the Fractional Flow Reserve and on the damping effect of a stenosis on the pressure amplitude during the pulsatory cycle. The coupled problem is described in a monolithic variational formulation based on Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) coordinates. For comparison, we perform pure Navier-Stokes simulations on a prestressed geometry to give a good matching of both configurations. A series of numerical simulations that cover important hemodynamical factors are presented and discussed.

We describe a temporal multiscale approach for the simulation of long-term processes with short-term influences involving partial differential equations. The specific problem under consideration is a growth process in blood vessels. The \emph{Candy Wrapper Process} describes a restenosis in a vessel that has previously be widened by inserting a stent. The development of a new stenosis takes place on a long time horizon (months) while the acting forces are mainly given by the pulsating blood flow. We describe a coupled pde model and a finite element simulation that is used as basis for our multiscale approach, which is based on averaging the long scale equation and approximating the fast scale impact by localized periodic-in-time problems. Numerical test cases in prototypical 3d configurations demonstrate the power of the approach.

For the first time we introduce an error estimator for the numerical approximation of the equations describing the dynamics of sea ice. The idea of the estimator is to identify different error contributions coming from spatial and temporal discretization as well as from the splitting in time of the ice momentum equations from further parts of the coupled system. The novelty of the error estimator lies in the consideration of the splitting error, which turns out to be dominant with increasing mesh resolution. Errors are measured in user specified functional outputs like the total sea ice extent. The error estimator is based on the dual weighted residual method that asks for the solution of an additional dual problem for obtaining sensitivity information. Estimated errors can be used to validate the accuracy of the solution and, more relevant, to reduce the discretization error by guiding an adaptive algorithm that optimally balances the mesh size and the time step size to increase the efficiency of the simulation.

We analyse a Eulerian Finite Element method, combining a Eulerian time-stepping scheme applied to the time-dependent Stokes equations using the CutFEM approach with inf-sup stable Taylor-Hood elements for the spatial discretisation. This is based on the method introduced by Lehrenfeld \& Olshanskii [ESAIM: M2AN 53(2):585--614] in the context of a scalar convection-diffusion problems on moving domains, and extended to the non-stationary Stokes problem on moving domains by Burman, Frei \& Massing [arXiv:1910.03054 [math.NA]] using stabilised equal-order elements. The analysis includes the geometrical error made by integrating over approximated levelset domains in the discrete CutFEM setting. The method is implemented and the theoretical results are illustrated using numerical examples.

Parameter-dependent discretizations of linear fluid-structure interaction problems can be approached with low-rank methods. When discretizing with respect to a set of parameters, the resulting equations can be translated to a matrix equation since all operators involved are linear. If nonlinear FSI problems are considered, a direct translation to a matrix equation is not possible. We present a method that splits the parameter set into disjoint subsets and, on each subset, computes an approximation of the problem related to the upper median parameter by means of the Newton iteration. This approximation is then used as initial guess for one Newton step on a subset of problems., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
