The article identifies problems with the ways in which various U.S. colleges and universities quantify and evaluate faculty workload. While these measurement systems often focus on number of classes taught, grant money, and student evaluation scores, the author notes that many professors engage in field work, the supervising of graduate student dissertations, and research when not teaching. U.S. lawmakers' interest in faculty productivity is explained while their methods for measuring it are criticized. Emphasis is given to the measurement of productivity at the University of Texas.
