This paper addresses the stability issue of a class of delayed switched cascade nonlinear systems consisting of separate subsystems and coupling terms between them. Some global and local asymptotic stability sufficient conditions are proposed, drawing stability conclusion of the overall cascade system from those of separate systems. These results essentially rely on the following observation: For a general delayed switched nonlinear system being asymptotically stable, the trajectories of the perturbed system asymptotically approach zero if so does the perturbation. In this paper, we propose new algebraic Gramians for continuous-time switched linear systems, which satisfy generalized Lyapunov equations. The main contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we show that the ranges of those Gramians encode the reachability and observability spaces of a switched linear system. As a consequence, a simple Gramian-based criterion for reachability and observability is established. Second, a balancing-based model order reduction technique is proposed and, under some sufficient conditions, stability preservation and an error bound are shown. This paper addresses robustness to external disturbances of switched discrete and continuous systems with multiple equilibria. First, we prove that if each subsystem of the switched system is input-to-state stable (ISS), then under switching signals that satisfy an average dwell-time bound, the solutions are ultimately bounded within a compact set. The size of this set varies monotonically with the supremum norm of the disturbance signal. These results generalize existing ones in the common equilibrium case to accommodate multiple equilibria. Then, we relax the (global) ISS conditions to consider equilibria that are locally exponentially stable (LES), and we establish practical stability for such switched systems under disturbances. Our motivation for studying this class of switched systems arises from certain motion planning problems in robotics, where primitive movements, each corresponding to an equilibrium point of a dynamical system, must be composed to obtain more complex motions. As a concrete example, we consider the problem of realizing safe adaptive locomotion of a three-dimensional biped under persistent external force by switching among motion primitives characterized by LES limit cycles. This paper considers the optimal control for hybrid systems whose trajectories transition between distinct subsystems when state-dependent constraints are satisfied. Though this class of systems is useful while modeling a variety of physical systems undergoing contact, the construction of a numerical method for their optimal control has proven challenging due to the combinatorial nature of the state-dependent switching and the potential discontinuities that arise during switches. This paper constructs a convex relaxation-based approach to solve this optimal control problem by formulating the problem in the space of relaxed controls, which gives rise to a linear program whose solution is proven to compute the globally optimal controller. This conceptual program is solved using a sequence of semidefinite programs whose solutions are proven to converge from below to the true solution of the original optimal control problem. Finally, a method to synthesize the optimal controller is developed. This paper introduces a new, reference trajectory following, sliding-mode control strategy for disturbed discrete-time systems. The strategy uses an external trajectory generator based on a switching type reaching law. The trajectory following strategy not only ensures all the properties of the quasi-sliding-mode as defined by Gao et al., but with a certain choice of the control parameters it also guarantees a significant reduction of the quasi-sliding-mode band width and the errors of all the state variables. This paper also considers the problem of error calculation in the discrete-time, reaching law based sliding-mode control systems. It is shown that the limitation of the sliding variable in the sliding phase directly results in bounded errors of all state variables. The results are verified with a simulation example. In this paper, we study attitude synchronization for elements in the unit sphere in $\mathbb {R}^{\scriptscriptstyle {\scriptscriptstyle {3}}}$ and for elements in the three-dimensional (3-D) rotation group, for a network with switching topology. The agents’ angular velocities are assumed to be the control inputs, and a switching control law for each agent is devised that guarantees synchronization, provided that all elements are initially contained in a region, which we identify later in the paper. The control law is decentralized and it does not require a common orientation frame among all agents. We refer to synchronization of unit vectors in $\mathbb {R}^{\scriptscriptstyle {3}}$ as incomplete synchronization, and of 3-D rotation matrices as complete synchronization. Our main contribution lies in showing that these two problems can be analyzed under a common framework, where all agents’ dynamics are transformed into unit vectors dynamics on a sphere of appropriate dimension. This paper studies the consensus tracking problem of uncertain Lagrangian systems. In contrast to the existing results where the command signals are sufficiently smooth, we consider a class of nonsmooth command signals generated by a switched command generator, which might be more realistic from the perspective of practical applications. The main technical innovations of this paper are threefold. First, to enable a rigorous problem formulation, some piecewise decaying function sets are defined to precisely describe the steady-state behaviors of the tracking errors. Second, to ensure the stability of the switched nonlinear closed-loop system, a system-based scaling method with the establishment of several lemmas is developed to determine the minimal dwell time of the switching signal. This paper presents iterative sequential action control (iSAC), a receding horizon approach for control of nonlinear systems. The iSAC method has a closed-form open-loop solution, which is iteratively updated between time steps by introducing constant control values applied for short duration. Application of a contractive constraint on the cost is shown to lead to closed-loop asymptotic stability under mild assumptions. The effect of asymptotically decaying disturbances on system trajectories is also examined. To demonstrate the applicability of iSAC, we employ a variety of systems and conditions, including a 13-dimensional quaternion-based quadrotor and NASA's Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft. Each system is tested in different scenarios, ranging from feasible and infeasible trajectory tracking to setpoint stabilization, with or without the presence of external disturbances. In this paper, we consider the distributed filtering problem for continuous-time stochastic systems over sensor networks subject to Markovian switching topologies. Due to limited communication energy and bandwidth, an event-based communication scheme is proposed with the aim to decrease the transmission frequency. An individual triggering condition is put forward to regulate the communication rates for each component of the system state in order to better reflect the engineering requirements. The aim of this paper is to design a distributed filter over sensor networks with Markovian switching topologies such that the dynamics of the estimation error is exponentially mean-square bounded. It is shown that, with the proposed event-based distributed filtering algorithm, the exponential mean-square boundedness of the estimation errors is guaranteed if the sensor network is distributively detectable and the combined communication topology is strongly connected. This paper addresses the actuator fault estimation sliding-mode observer (SMO) design problem of linear continuous-time systems over digital communication channels. This problem frequently occurred in a network environment where data has to be quantized before being transmitted via digital communication channels. Traditional observers (linear Luenberger observer, Walcott–ZaK SMO) are not effective to solve this design issue since the effects of signal quantization will degrade estimation performances evidently. In this paper, a new descriptor SMO method is presented to overcome this difficult problem. It is shown that, if the quantizer density is larger than $\sqrt{2}-1$ , the designed observer can compensate quantization errors completely, and the fault vector can be reconstructed despite of signal quantization. This paper presents results to assure the almost sure stability of switching stochastic nonlinear systems. The switching rule governing the parameters of the system is driven by independent and identically distributed random variables. In this scenario, we prove that the switching nonlinear system is almost surely stable when appropriate matrices have spectral radius less than one. The result is particularly useful for applications, as shown in the paper by the application for an automotive electronic throttle device. The objective of this paper is to generate planar patterns using an autonomous agent modeled as a unicycle. The patterns are generated about a stationary point referred to as the target. To achieve the same, the paper proposes a family of control inputs that are continuous functions of range, which is the distance between the unicycle and the target. The paper studies in detail a characterization of the resulting trajectories, which are a plethora of patterns of parametric curves (circles, spirals, epicyclic curves like hypotrochoids) and more. These appealing patterns find applications in exploration, coverage, land mine detection, etc., where the target represents any point of interest like a landmark or a beacon. The paper also investigates the necessary conditions on the control laws in order to generate patterns of desired shapes and bounds. Furthermore, to generate desired patterns with arbitrary initial conditions, a switching strategy is proposed which is illustrated using an algorithm. This paper addresses the problems of determining the \mathcal H_2 norm and the root mean square (RMS) gain of continuous-time switched linear systems. A novel class of Lyapunov functions is proposed for reaching this goal, called homogeneous rational Lyapunov functions (HRLFs). It is shown that sufficient conditions for establishing upper bounds of the sought performance indexes in the case of arbitrary switching can be given in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI) feasibility tests by searching for an HRLF of chosen degree. Moreover, it is shown that these conditions are also necessary by searching for an HRLF of degree sufficiently large. It is worth mentioning that necessary and sufficient LMI conditions have not been proposed yet in the literature for the considered problems. Hence, the paper continues by considering the case of switching with dwell time constraints, showing that analogous LMI conditions can be obtained for this case by searching for a family of HRLFs mutually constrained by the dwell time specification. This paper investigates the secure state estimation problem of multiagent systems with misbehaving agents. Compared with the existing works which only consider malicious behaviors generated elaborately, a class of faulty behaviors generated randomly is also taken into account. By assuming that faulty behaviors cannot be altered by the adversaries, the notion of orthogonal complement matrix is introduced to characterize the state observability of the multiagent systems with both faulty and malicious agents. It is shown that more misbehaving agents can be tolerated by distinguishing faulty agents from malicious ones. Then, for single agent, two algorithms are provided to estimate the state based on its own value and the measurements obtained from its neighbors. This article considers a nonlinear filtering method for handling outliers. The presence of outliers that are gross observation errors can greatly reduce the accuracy of filtering methods that assume Gaussian distributed errors. There are some existing methods that assume a Gaussian observation error, and estimate the error covariance matrix at each time step to avoid overfitting to the outliers. However, the estimates of the covariance matrix under such methods can become unstable. This results in underfitting or overfitting to observations when filtering. This paper presents a new method for handling outliers in nonlinear filtering problems by extending the unscented Kalman filter. In this method, two Gaussian observation error models with distinct covariance matrices are used: one for observations with regular errors, and another with a larger variance specified by a scale parameter for outliers. In addition to the system state, this method estimates an indicator variable that switches between the two models and the scale parameter for outliers. With the inclusion of the indicator variable and scale parameter, the estimated error covariance matrix can handle both regular observations and outliers appropriately at each time step. Furthermore, by estimating the scale parameter, the proposed method can be applied to a dataset without additional tuning to account for outlier characteristics. This paper addresses the event-triggered dynamic output feedback control for switched linear systems with frequent asynchronism. Different from existing work, which limits at most once switching during an interevent interval, we adopt the average dwell time approach without limiting the minimum dwell time of each subsystem, and thus frequent switching is allowed to happen in an interevent interval. Since the difficulty in acquiring the full information of system states, the dynamic output feedback controller is taken into account to stabilize the switched system. By employing a controller-mode-dependent Lyapunov functional, stability criterion is proposed for the resulting closed-loop system, based on which the dynamic output feedback controller together with the mode-dependent event-triggered mechanism is codesigned. Besides, the existence of the lower bound on interevent intervals is attentively discussed, which gets rid of the Zeno behavior. In this paper, we propose a state-dependent switching controller for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) bilinear systems with constant delays in both the state and the input. The control input is assumed to be restricted to take only a finite number of values. The stability analysis of the closed loop is based on a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, and the design is reduced to solve a system of linear matrix inequalities. This paper employs detectability ideas to decide uniform global asymptotic stability (UGAS) of the trivial solution for a class of switched nonlinear time-varying systems when the trivial solution is uniformly globally stable. Using the notion of limiting behaviors of the state, output, and switching signals, the concept of a limiting zeroing-output solution is introduced. This leads to a definition of weak zero-state detectability (WZSD) that can be used to check UGAS, (uniformly for a set of switched signals). En route to establish this, a number of new stability results are derived. For example, under appropriate conditions, it is feasible to decide UGAS even when the switching signal does not satisfy an averaged dwell-time condition. It is also shown that WZSD of the original switched system can be verified by detectability conditions of much simpler auxiliary systems. Moreover, UGAS can be guaranteed without requiring that in each allowable system (without switching), the trivial solution is attractive. In this paper, we propose continuous-time and sampled-data output feedback controllers for nonlinear multi-input multi-output systems with time-varying measurement and input delays, with no restriction on the bound or serious limitations on the growth of the nonlinearities. A state prediction is generated by chains of saturated high-gain observers with switching error-correction terms and the state prediction is used to stabilize the system with saturated controls. The observers reconstruct the unmeasurable states at different delayed time-instants, which partition the maximal variation interval of the time-varying delays. These delayed time instant depend both on the magnitude of the delays and the growth rate of the nonlinearities. We also design sampled-data stabilizers as zero-order discretization of a hybrid modification (with continuous-time states and discrete-time control and innovations) of the continuous-time stabilizers. This paper considers the problem of efficiently and securely controlling cyber-physical systems that are operating in uncertain, and adversarial environments. To mitigate sensor, actuator attacks, and performance loss due to such attacks, we formulate a secure control algorithm that consists of a proactive and a reactive defense mechanism. The proactive mechanism, which is based on the principles of moving target defense, utilizes a stochastic switching structure to dynamically and continuously alter the parameters of the system, while hindering the attacker's ability to conduct successful reconnaissance to the system. The unpredictability of the current actuator and sensor is optimized using an information entropy measure, which is induced by probabilistic switching. The reactive mechanism on the other side, detects potentially attacked components, namely sensors and actuators, by leveraging online data to compute an integral Bellman error. A rigorous mathematical framework is presented to guarantee the stability of the equilibrium point of the closed-loop system, and provide a quantified bound on the performance loss when utilizing both reactive and proactive mechanisms. This paper is concerned with state estimation for a class of hidden semi-Markov jump linear systems governed by a two-layer stochastic process in the discrete-time context. A semi-Markov chain and an observed-mode sequence constitute the lower and upper layer of the process, respectively. With the aid of the emission probability, a novel filter, which is dependent both on the elapsed time within the activated mode and on the observed mode instead of the system mode, is constructed and called observed-mode-dependent (OMD) filter. A modified $\sigma$ -error mean square stability ($\sigma$ -MSS) is proposed by considering the weight of expected operation time in each actual system mode. Based on the new $\sigma$ -MSS, together with a class of Lyapunov functions depending on both the system modes and the corresponding observed ones, numerically checkable conditions on the existence of the OMD filter are presented such that the estimation error system is $\sigma$ -MSS with a prescribed $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ disturbance attenuation level. Based on the P-type composition of Petri nets (PNs) defined in this paper, a framework for a structural control of discrete event systems (DESs) is constructed such that a closed-loop PN is obtained by composing a plant PN and a controller. As for a disjunction or conjunctive normal form (CNF) of linear constraints, a new approach is proposed to design a structural controller in this framework. First, a switching-net is defined for a disjunction of constraints, and an extended plant is obtained through the P-type composition of a plant PN and switching-net. Second, the disjunction of bounded constraints is transformed into a conjunction of switching-constraints on the extended plant. Third, a controller is synthesized by designing monitors for conjunctive switching-constraints according to a supervision-based-on-place-invariant method. Fourth, in a similar manner, a controller is also designed for a CNF of bounded constraints. The resulting controller is maximally permissive if each disjunction of constraints meets the jump-free condition, and its size grows polynomially with the number of constraints. This paper deals with the problem of sliding mode control design for nonlinear stochastic singular semi-Markov jump systems (S-MJSs). Stochastic disturbance is first considered in studying S-MJSs with a stochastic semi-Markov process related to Weibull distribution. The specific information including the bound of nonlinearity is known for the control design. Our attention is to design sliding mode control law to attenuate the influences of uncertainty and nonlinear term. First, by the use of the Lyapunov function, a set of sufficient conditions are developed such that the closed-loop sliding mode dynamics are stochastically admissible. Then, the sliding mode control law is proposed to ensure the reachability in a finite-time region. This paper presents a systematical reduced-order observer design method for a class of switched descriptor systems containing unknown inputs (UIs) in both the dynamic and the output equations. Generally speaking, when the output of the system contains UIs, the reduced-order observer design will become much more challenging. In order to overcome the difficulty brought by the UIs in the output, first, by introducing a new UI vector, a new equivalent system is obtained, which does not contain UIs in the corresponding output any more. Then, for the purpose of reduced-order observer design, the observer matching condition (OMC) and the minimal phase condition (MPC) are discussed, and it is shown that the new general system maintains both the OMC and the MPC. Subsequently, based on the discussions on the existence conditions, a reduced-order unknown input observer is developed to asymptotically estimate the state of the original system. In this paper, input-to-state stability (ISS) for discrete-time switched nonlinear time-varying (SNTV) systems is investigated. Starting with discrete-time nonlinear time-varying (NTV) systems, some improved sufficient conditions are proposed to verify the ISS of systems by using the weak implication-form ISS (WI-ISS) Lyapunov function, weak dissipative-form ISS (WD-ISS) Lyapunov function, and interval descent technique. Then, the results obtained are extended to study the ISS of discrete-time SNTV systems, several relaxed conditions are given by using piecewise WI-ISS and WD-ISS Lyapunov functions, minimum dwell time, and infinite switching methods, respectively. Comparing with the existing results, the obtained conditions release the requirement on negative definiteness of the differences of (piecewise) Lyapunov functions, moreover, all subsystems are allowed to be unstable in the case of infinite switching. This paper focuses on the problem of output tracking with prescribed transient and steady-state performance for strict-feedback systems with unknown nonlinear functions and unmatched disturbances. In lieu of Nussbaum gain techniques, parameter estimation algorithms and switching control strategies, a continuous static low-complexity control solution is provided by means of a novel combination of smooth orientation functions and error transformation functions. The proposed method possesses inherent robustness against model uncertainties, disturbances, and virtual control signal derivatives, thus eliminating the needs to introduce extra robust control schemes and compute analytic derivatives. This paper is concerned with the fault and state estimation problem for Markovian jump systems (MJSs) with simultaneous actuator and sensor faults. To deal with the design issues, we propose a novel descriptor reduced-order sliding mode observer (SMO), based on which the estimation of the actuator faults, sensor faults, and the states can be obtained simultaneously. Compared with the traditional SMO design issues in MJSs, we reconstruct the actuator faults directly without employing the equivalent output error injection method. Thus, the reachability analysis of the sliding surface is not necessary. The superiority of this kind of the SMO method is that the sliding surface switching problem is avoided. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of linear continuous-time systems with stochastically switching delays are presented in this paper. It is assumed that the delay random paths are piece-wise constant functions of time where a finite number of values may be taken by the delay. The stability is assessed in terms of the second moment of the state vector of the system. The solution operators of individual linear systems with constant delays, chosen from the set of all possible delay values, are extended to form new augmented operators. Then for proper formulation of the second moment in continuous time, tensor products of the augmented solution operators are used. Finally the finite-dimensional versions of the stability conditions, that can be obtained using various time discretization techniques, are presented. The joint spectral radius (JSR) of a set of matrices characterizes the maximal asymptotic growth rate of an infinite product of matrices of the set. This quantity appears in a number of applications including the stability of switched and hybrid systems. A popular method used for the stability analysis of these systems searches for a Lyapunov function with convex optimization tools. We analyze the accuracy of this method for constrained switched systems, a class of systems that has attracted increasing attention recently. We provide a new guarantee for the upper bound provided by the sum of squares implementation of the method. This guarantee relies on the $p$ -radius of the system and the entropy of the language of allowed switching sequences. In this paper, we study a linear–quadratic mean-field-type game problem under jump–diffusion–regime switching state dynamics that include mean-field terms in the states and in the cost function. In the cost functional, we consider conditional variance of both the states and control actions, mean of both states and control actions, and covariance terms. In this paper, the stability and $L_2$ -gain properties of linear impulsive delay systems with delayed impulses are studied. Commonly employed techniques, in which the delayed impulses are treated using Newton–Leibniz formula, may not be applicable to $L_2$ -gain analysis, since they make the disturbance input appear in the impulse part. In order to circumvent the difficulty, we first augment the considered system to a time-delay system with switching nondelayed impulses. Due to the absence of delayed impulses, this new approach has advantages in constructing Lyapunov functions and handling the effects of impulse delays on the system performance. Switching-based time-dependent Lyapunov functions are introduced to deal with the resultant switching impulses of the augmented system. Sufficient conditions for exponential stability and $L_2$ -gain properties are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Secure state estimation for cyber-physical systems under sparse sensor attacks is the problem of estimating the state from the corrupted measurements. Although such problem can be addressed by brute force search, combinatorial candidates lead to excessive time requirement, which hinders the scalability. For reducing the computational complexity, this paper provides an alternative approach (called set cover approach) to reduce the number of candidates by at least half with the help of a greedy algorithm. Then, a switched observer, with less candidate observers, is designed to estimate the state from the corrupted measurements under the basic observability requirement. Meanwhile, a modified greedy algorithm is proposed to reduce the number of candidates further based on the observer design conditions. This paper studies the stability for impulsive switched time-delay systems with state-dependent impulses. Since the impulses and the switches are not necessarily synchronous, we start from a stability analysis of impulsive switched time-delay systems with time-dependent impulses. Sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the stability property, which extends the previous results for the synchronous switch and impulse case. For the state-dependent impulse case, using the B-equivalent method, impulsive switched time-delay systems with state-dependent impulses are transformed into impulsive switched time-delay systems with time-dependent impulses. The equivalence between the original system and the transformed system is established, and stability conditions are obtained for impulsive switched time-delay systems with state-dependent impulses. This paper deals with the dead-beat stabilizability of autonomous discrete-time switched linear systems. Based on a constructive necessary and sufficient condition for dead-beat stabilizability, we propose two algorithms. The first one is concerned with the problem of testing dead-beat stabilizability and computing the shorter stabilizing mode sequence, whenever it exists. The other one implements a method to construct a switched system whose shorter dead-beat stabilizing sequence has a prescribed length. This paper investigates the interaction between control and communications in networked systems by studying a class of stochastic approximation algorithms that accommodate random network topology switching processes, time-varying functions, nonlinear dynamics, additive and nonadditive noises, and other uncertainties. Interaction among control strategy and the multiple stochastic processes introduces critical challenges in such problems. By modeling the random switching as a discrete-time Markov chain and studying multiple stochastic uncertainties in a unified framework, it is shown that under broad conditions, the algorithms are convergent. The performance of the algorithms is further analyzed by establishing their rate of convergence and asymptotic characterizations. This paper addresses the stabilization problem for nonlinear Markovian jump systems (MJS) with output disturbances, actuator and sensor faults simultaneously. This kind of plants are common in practical systems, such as mobile manipulators with switching joints. In this paper, a sliding mode observer design scheme is proposed for a new descriptor augmented plant. By employing the developed observer, the effects of actuator and sensor faults can be eliminated. It is shown that the stabilization of the overall closed-loop plant can be guaranteed by the proposed fault tolerant control (FTC) scheme. In this paper we study the stability of nonlinear and time-varying switched systems under restricted switching. We approach the problem by decomposing the system dynamics into a nominal-like part and a perturbation-like one. Most stability results for perturbed systems are based on the use of strong Lyapunov functions, i.e. functions of time and state whose total time derivative along the nominal system trajectories is bounded by a negative definite function of the state. However, switched systems under restricted switching may not admit strong Lyapunov functions, even when asymptotic stability is uniform over the set of switching signals considered. The main contribution of the current paper consists in providing stability results that are based on the stability of the nominal-like part of the system and require only a weak Lyapunov function. These results may have wider applicability than results based on strong Lyapunov functions. The results provided follow two lines. First, we give very general global uniform asymptotic stability results under reasonable boundedness conditions on the functions that define the dynamics of the nominal-like and the perturbation-like parts of the system. Second, we provide input-to-state stability (ISS) results for the case when the nominal-like part is switched linear-time-varying. In this paper, we consider the l\infty gain characterizations of linear switched systems (LSS) and present various relevant results on their exact computation and optimization. Depending on the role of the switching sequence, we study two broad cases: first, when the switching sequence attempts to maximize, and second, when it attempts to minimize the l\infty gain. The first, named as worst-case throughout the paper, can be related to robustness of the system to uncontrolled switching; the second relates to situations when the switching can be part to the overall decision making. Although, in general, the exact computation of l\infty gains is difficult, we provide specific classes, the input-output switching systems, for which it is shown that linear programming can be used to obtain the worst-case l\infty gain. This is a sufficiently rich class of systems as any stable LSS can be approximated by one. Certain applications to robust control design are provided where we show that a switched compensation independently of the plant has no advantage over a linear time invariant (LTI) compensation, and further, if the plant is strictly causal, even a switched compensation which has a matched switching with the plant does not provide a better performance over an LTI compensation. Also, we present a new necessary and sufficient condition to check the stability of LSS in form of a model matching problem. On the other hand, if one is interested in minimizing the l\infty gain over the switching sequences, we show that, for finite impulse response (FIR) switching systems the minimizing switching sequence can be chosen to be periodic. For input-only or output-only switching an exact, readily computable, characterization of the minimal l\infty gain is provided, and it is shown that the minimizing switching sequence is constant, which, as also shown, is not true for input-output switching. This paper investigates standard $H_\infty$ control of switched systems via dwell-time switchings without posing any internal stability requirements on subsystems of the switched systems. First, a sufficient condition is formed by specifying lower and upper bounds of the dwell time, constraining upper bound of derivative of a Lyapunov function of the active subsystem, and forcing the Lyapunov function values of the overall switched system to decrease at switching times to achieve standard $H_\infty$ control of unforced switched linear systems. Then, in the same framework of the dwell time, sufficient conditions are given for that of the corresponding forced switched linear systems by further designing state feedback controllers. Controlled distinguishability of two dynamical systems is the property of the systems that guarantees the existence of a control input generating different outputs of the systems regardless of their initial state vectors. These inputs are referred in the literature as discerning control inputs. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition for controlled distinguishability of continuous-time bilinear systems is established. It generalizes the classic one provided in the literature for the class of linear systems and a method for designing discerning inputs of bilinear systems that stabilize the systems is also proposed. This paper considers the optimal control problem of linear switched systems with linear quadratic (LQ) cost or multiple LQ cost. By adopting an embedding transformation, the switching design problem is relaxed and transformed into a traditional optimal control problem. The bang–bang-type solutions of the embedded optimal control problems are obtained for both the positive definite LQ cost case and the multiple LQ cost case, which are the optimal solutions to the original problems. The switching sequence of modes and the switching instants can be calculated by solving a closed-form optimal switching condition. The optimal state feedback control law is determined simultaneously. This paper is concerned with the study of both, local and global, uniform asymptotic stability for switched nonlinear time-varying (NLTV) systems through the detectability of output-maps. With this aim, the notion of reduced limiting control systems for switched NLTV systems whose switchings verify time/state-dependent constraints, and the concept of weak zero-state detectability for those reduced limiting systems are introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the (global)uniform asymptotic stability of families of trajectories of the switched system are obtained in terms of this detectability property. These sufficient conditions in conjunction with the existence of multiple weak Lyapunov functions yield a criterion for the (global) uniform asymptotic stability of families of trajectories of the switched system. This criterion can be seen as an extension of the classical Krasovskii-LaSalle theorem. An interesting feature of the results is that no dwell-time assumptions are made. Moreover, they can be used for establishing the global uniform asymptotic stability of the switched NLTV system under arbitrary switchings. Existing results on cooperative control of multiagent systems with unknown control directions require that the underlying topology is either fixed with a strongly connected graph or switching between different strongly connected graphs. Furthermore, in most cases the graph is assumed to be balanced. This paper proposes a new class of nonlinear proportional-integral (PI) based algorithms to relax these requirements and allow for unbalanced and switching topologies having a jointly strongly connected basis. This is made possible for single-integrator (SI) and double-integrator (DI) agents with nonidentical unknown control directions by a suitable selection of the distributed nonlinear PI functions. Moreover, as a special case, the proposed algorithms are applied to strongly connected and fixed graphs. Finally, simulation examples are given to show the validity of our theoretical results. It is proved in this paper that the existence of suitable multiple Lyapunov functions is a necessary and sufficient condition for a discrete-time nonlinear switching system, with given switches digraph, to be globally asymptotically stable. This paper considers the input-to-state stability (ISS) of time-varying switched systems with time delays, where the upper bound estimation for the operator of Lyapunov function (UBEOL) is assumed to be time varying and mode dependent. The ISS and integral ISS are investigated for time-varying switched systems with time delays by using the Lyapunov–Razumikhin and comparison theorem methods. Since the coefficient in the UBEOL is time varying and takes a positive/negative value, the subsystems consist of both ISS and non-ISS subsystems, simultaneously. It is shown that our presented results have wider applications than some existing works. Two examples, including one of the consensus for time-varying multiagent systems with cooperative and competitive protocols, are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results. This paper studies an optimal control problem related to membrane-filtration processes. A generic mathematical model of membrane fouling is used to capture the dynamic behavior of the filtration process, which consists in the attachment of matter onto the membrane during the filtration period, and the detachment of matter during the cleaning period. We consider the maximization of the net water production of a membrane filtration system (i.e., the filtrate) over a finite time horizon, where the control variable is the sequence of filtration/backwashing cycles over the operation time of process. Based on the Pontryagin's maximum principle, we characterize the optimal control strategy and show that it exhibits a singular arc. Moreover, we prove the existence of an additional switching curve before reaching the terminal state, and also the possibility of having a dispersal curve as a locus where both the different strategies are optimal. This paper studies the consensus problem of nonidentical Euler–Lagrange systems with parametric uncertainties, under switching directed graphs. We present an adaptive distributed control algorithm that solves this problem in the leaderless scenario, under weak assumptions on the switching interconnection between agents. It is shown that the proposed consensus protocol achieves consensus without using neighbor's velocity information and accounts for the discontinuity of the input torque that results from the switching interaction between agents. In this note, we investigate the stabilization of discrete-time linear systems with an unknown time-varying delay. Existing literature on the stabilization of time-delay systems require some knowledge, such as an upper bound, of the delay. In this paper, by proposing a switched low-gain feedback control law, we are able to achieve asymptotic stabilization of the system without any knowledge of the delay. In addition, the proposed switched low-gain feedback law also significantly improves the closed-loop system performance in terms of overshoot and convergence speed in comparison with the traditional fixed gain design. This paper addresses the stability problem for linear continuous-time Markovian switching singular systems. Considering the inherent state jump behavior at the switching instants, a necessary and sufficient condition of exponential stability in the mean square sense for the Markovian switching singular system is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities by means of a stochastic Lyapunov approach. Based on the obtained stability result, sufficient conditions of exponential stability in the mean square sense for the Markovian switching singular system with uncertain and partly unknown transition probability are presented. This paper studies the stabilization problem via the co-design of controllers and a switching policy for a new class of nonstrict feedback switched nonlinear systems whose subsystems consist of a chain of integrators, feedback paths, and first-order feedforward paths. Designing only smooth feedback controllers cannot deal with the unstabilizable factors caused by feedforward paths. By exploiting the single control Lyapunov function method, an effective switching policy is co-designed to compensate the controllers. In addition, we present a generalized backstepping process, based on which the solvability of virtual controllers is guaranteed, the algebraic condition for stabilizability is identified, and the transient response of the closed-loop systems is improved.
