Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are playing a pivotal role in the power sector with potential applications, such as interfacing renewable energy sources with the grid and several industrial drive applications. MLIs with a smaller number of switching devices are more promising due to their compact size, reduced cost, and higher efficiency compared with their traditional counterparts. This paper, therefore, presents a new three-phase seven-level inverter. This topology is a combination of two cascade-connected two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and H-bridge cells with flying capacitors (FCs). This paper presents the operating principle and the balancing technique for the dc-link capacitors and FCs. The generation of various output voltage levels and the limitation of the sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation control for FC voltage balancing is also presented. The number of components in the proposed circuit configuration and their voltage ratings are considerably lower compared with the recently proposed topologies. The behavior of the proposed circuit configuration is first assessed with simulation studies and is then tested with a laboratory prototype. This paper presents a neutral-point deviation and ripple compensating control method applied to a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The neutral-point deviation and its harmonic components are analyzed with a focus on the average current flowing through the neutral-point of the dc link. This paper also proposes a control scheme compensating for the neutral-point deviation and dominant harmonic components under generalized unbalanced grid operating conditions. The positive and negative sequence components of the switching functions and ac input currents are employed to accurately explain the behavior of three-level NPC converter. Current harmonics are ubiquitous in dual three phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives. Due to back electromotive force (EMF) distortion, significant current harmonics are generated in the DTP-PMSM system. The influence of back EMF harmonics is investigated in this paper and a novel switching-table-based direct torque control method to compensate the selected current harmonics caused by the back EMF harmonics is proposed. It shows that by employing different optimal action time durations for voltage vectors in the z1z2 subspace and setting the synthetic voltage vectors to non-zero, the stator flux harmonics caused by the back EMF harmonics can be selectively compensated, as verified by experiments. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a promising candidate in high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission systems. Due to the features of simple structure, low cost, and low power losses, half-bridge (HB) is usually adopted as the submodule circuit in the traditional MMC. However, an HB submodule circuit-based MMC does not have the capability of blocking dc short-circuit fault, which obstructs the development of low-cost HVdc systems with overhead lines. In order to solve this problem, an MMC with active clamped T-type submodule (ACTSM) to own dc fault blocking capability is proposed in this paper. Compared with other submodule circuits, the proposed ACTSM has many features, such as symmetrical blocking capability, low power losses, low voltage stress, and low amount of independent drive signals. The topology, operation principle, dc fault blocking capability, and distribution of power losses of the ACTSM are presented in this paper. The pump-back test is widely adopted in the industry for characterizing and qualifying high-power converters. One popular pump-back test configuration is to tie the dc links of two converters together and circulate the current through the inductor connected between the ac terminals. In this configuration, one of the converters operates in the voltage mode to generate the virtual grid and the other converter regulates the circulating current, where hysteresis control could be applied. However, the switching characteristics of hysteresis control are unique due to the pulsewidth modulation type voltage being the virtual grid. This paper contributes to analyzing the switching frequency characteristics of the hysteresis control in this pump-back test configuration. The switching frequency tracking phenomenon is revealed and reported in this paper for the first time. Dual-comparison one-cycle control for the bidirectional power flow in single-phase grid-connected converters is proposed in this paper. Advantages of dual-comparison one-cycle control when compared to conventional one-cycle control is that it does not give any steady-state dc offset, no light-load instability, and implements unipolar pulsewidth modulation without having to sense the grid voltage. Addition of a fictitious current term, which is generated from the gating signal of one of the active devices, using a bandpass filter, enables the bidirectional power flow. The quality factor of the bandpass filter is shown to impact the total harmonic distortion in current, fundamental displacement angle, and steady-state dc offset. The optimal value of a quality factor, obtained with aid of simulations, gives a superior performance. The current drawn or injected into the grid is seen to lag the grid voltage. The reason for a nonunity displacement power factor is analyzed and a compensation to achieve a unity displacement power factor is also proposed in this paper. This paper presents a single-stage nonisolated switched capacitor ac–dc converter for power-factor correction (PFC). This converter features reduced passive components, single switch, transformerless high voltage gain, and improves the power factor, reduces total harmonic distortion, and voltage stress across the switch. The peak current mode with a dynamic resonant perturbation scheme compensates the subharmonics that exist at zero crossing of the source current is implemented for PFC. The neutral-point voltage-balancing control is a critical issue of a neutral-point-clamped converter. The conventional control strategy is to inject the specific zero-sequence voltage to regulate the redundant vector, but it is unacceptable to the three-phase four-wire system. This paper provides a neutral-point voltage-balancing control by the dipolar modulation, and the control freedom of the zero-sequence voltage is flexible. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for both three-phase three-wire and three-phase four-wire systems. Besides, the proposed method improves the control dynamic in a reactive power system. The operating principle of the clamp circuits like clamping diodes and flying capacitor in three-level LLC converter is different from other three-level converters, because the mean value of the resonant tank current is always zero and pulse-frequency modulation control is generally used instead of pulsewidth modulation control. And the converter with only the clamping diodes or flying capacitor is difficult to realize voltage balance. In this paper, the characteristics of the three-level LLC converter with single clamp circuit are first analyzed. Then, the operation principle of the hybrid-clamped circuit under the unbalanced voltages on input capacitors is described with the mode analysis, based on which the mechanism for voltage autobalance is elaborated and the effects of two clamp circuits are derived. Then, the design of the clamping diodes and the flying capacitor is also involved. This paper introduces a generalized control method based on the finite control set-model predictive control for a single-phase N-level flying capacitor multilevel rectifier used for solid state transformers. Unlike the conventional finite control set-model predictive control, the proposed method does not use the switching function to calculate the predicted value of the grid current. The proposed method also predicts the dc-link voltage without switching function so that it enables each leg voltages to be controlled stably and independently. Therefore, the number of states to be considered is significantly reduced, in addition to the computational time; and the level expansion of the flying capacitor multilevel rectifier is facilitated. In addition, since the cost function for controlling the grid current and that for controlling the voltage of the flying capacitor is separated, weighting factors are not required. The validity of the proposed method was verified by a simulation of a single-phase 11-level flying capacitor multilevel rectifier using Powersim software, and an experiment on a single-phase 5-level flying capacitor multilevel rectifier prototype. An improved bridgeless (BL) Cuk converter-based electric vehicle (EV) battery charger with high power factor and increased efficiency is designed and developed in this paper. It provides low cost and high-power-density-based charging solution for the EV. This charger incorporates less number of devices operating over one switching cycle, which reduces the additional conduction loss incurred by a diode bridge rectifier of the conventional charger. Hence, it improves the charger's efficiency. The added advantage of the proposed topology is that the unwanted capacitive coupling loop is removed, as well as the unwanted conduction through the body diode of the inactive switch in the previously developed BL Cuk converter is avoided. This significantly improves the charger's efficiency. For the constant current and constant voltage charging, the commands are synchronized by a flyback converter. The proposed charger draws a sinusoidal current from ac mains and the total harmonic distortion in the supply current is reduced to the limits specified by the IEC 61000-3-2 guidelines. This paper proposes a novel open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with dual two-level converters in order to reduce the converter rating and switching frequency for large-scale wind turbine applications. The new converter topology is equivalent to a three-level converter directly connected to the control winding of typical BDFRG. The OW-BDFRG system with this topology structure requires lower converter rating and switching frequency, and has a more flexible control mode, better operation performance, and fault redundancy capability. For the OW-BDFRG, this paper also proposes a new control scheme combining direct power control (DPC) with sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) control to implement the power tracking. The voltage-vector switching table of DPC is redesigned according to the error signals of active and reactive powers of the power winding, as well as the sector location of control winding flux. The active and reactive powers of the OW-BDFRG can be directly decoupled and independently controlled by properly selecting the switching voltage vectors. The novelty of this paper lies in an OW-BDFRG topology driven by dual two-level converters to improve the system characteristics, and the use of SMVS control to improve the DPC accuracy and robustness to parameter variations. The hybrid modular multilevel converter with cascaded full bridges (HMMC-CFB) is a recently proposed dc fault tolerant converter topology for high-power applications. It has a director part (DP) consisting of a series of connected half-bridge submodules, and a wave-shaping part (WSP) composed of a series of connected full-bridge submodules (FBSMs). The submodules in DP avoid high voltage stresses and improve synchronization between DP and WSP by slowing down the change rate of DP output voltage. This slowdown is achieved by using a trapezoidal reference signal for DP. The WSP attenuates the voltage harmonics produced by DP. However, the energy exchanged by WSP changes with modulation index, which may cause improper voltage regulation of the submodule capacitors. This paper proposes a new control technique to regulate the energy exchanged by WSP, which uses a variable slope trapezoidal reference signal of DP. To obtain this slope, the feedforward and feedback controllers are used. The feedforward controller gives the value of slope depending on the modulation index (mv) to keep the energy exchanged by WSP nearly equal to zero, whereas the losses and nonideality of the converter are taken care of by the feedback controller. This technique guarantees proper voltage regulation of the submodule capacitors for all modulation indices. The efficacy of the proposed technique is confirmed using simulations and experimentations. This paper also presents a circulating current suppressing controller for HMMC-CFB. The control of an ultracapacitor (UC)-based dc–dc power supply is crucial to provide reliable energy backup to critical loads in the case of momentary power main failures. In this regard, smooth and seamless transition between charging and discharging controls of UC stack is of paramount importance. For ride-through applications where charging and discharging times are critical, provision of different control structures for charging and discharging subsystems is crucial. The conventional control techniques, though ensure seamless mode transition, does not allow different control structures for both the subsystems. This paper proposes an independent switch control strategy, which ensures seamless transition between charging and discharging control modes. The proposed control is based on pulse-width modulation blocking and is shown to ensure the fastest mode transition between control modes. The proposed control also elucidates an accurate method for identification of control modes, which is important to independent switch control. The advantages of the proposed control compared with conventional controls is presented in this paper. This paper presents an isolated auxiliary power supply for medium-voltage power electronics systems. The proposed converter comprises two stages: a non-isolated ac/dc stage that connects directly to the medium-voltage line, and an isolated dc/dc stage that provides 100-W output power at 24 V, with 10 kV isolation. The proposed modular ac/dc stage uses just one active semiconductor device per module, features an internal capacitor voltage balancing, and achieves power factor correction by employing predictive current control. High switching frequency operation of both converter stages enable a reduction in system size and weight when compared to traditional low-frequency transformer-based approach. This paper deals with the control and implementation of solar photovoltaic (PV) array-based multi-objective bi-directional charger beneficial for electric vehicle (EV), household load, and utility. For EV, the charger provides the charging facility. For household load, the charger acts as a standalone inverter, and for utility the charger acts as an active power filter. However, for providing the multi-functionality and the multi-mode operation capability of the charger, a reconfigurable control strategy is proposed. Moreover, an adaptive dc-link voltage strategy is proposed for achieving the optimum voltage at dc link under all voltage conditions for achieving minimum ripple in grid currents. The charger also uses a voltage synchronization strategy for achieving the seamless mode transition between the grid-connected and standalone modes. In grid-connected mode, the charger uses a double second-order generalized integrator-based positive sequence estimator along with the improved linear sinusoidal tracer-based algorithm for generating the balanced and sinusoidal reference grid currents, under the unbalanced and distorted grid voltages. Three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are being widely adopted in low-voltage low-power applications. For an intended application, the modulation strategy and the operating conditions are the two key factors that highly influence the major performance indices of the NPC inverter, such as efficiency, harmonic distortion, and voltage oscillations at neutral point (NP). Considering dynamic loading applications where the operating point varies significantly, this paper proposes an improved adjustable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy for a three-level NPC inverter that can alter its modulation pattern to meet desired performance objectives for the full operation range. It has been shown that by varying two control parameters namely discontinuity control parameter and bias control parameter, the proposed modulation strategy changes its pattern between the most efficient generalized discontinuous PWM to NP oscillations-free partial dipolar PWM strategy. Additionally, to obtain a tradeoff between the performance parameters—efficiency, NP oscillations, and waveform quality—The proposed strategy has the ability to settle at the intermediate modulation patterns by transforming into a hybrid modulation signal. Furthermore, considering NP voltage unbalance mitigation as major technical challenge in adjustable modulation strategy, a voltage unbalance compensator that exhibits satisfactory balancing performance for the entire variations of modulation patterns and operating conditions has also been presented. The performance of the proposed modulation strategy in conjunction with voltage unbalance compensator has been evaluated in simulation by widely varying the speed and load of induction motor, and verified in experimentation. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. Three-phase voltage source pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rectifiers can achieve constant dc voltage and sinusoidal grid currents under ideal grid voltages. However, under unbalanced grid voltage conditions, there are ripples at twice the grid frequency in the dc voltage, and the grid currents become highly distorted. To address the aforementioned problems, control methods developed under ideal grid voltage conditions should be modified. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature to calculate the new current reference or power reference. However, most methods use conventional pq theory and only consider the grid-side power control. Hence, the dc voltage ripples are not completely eliminated. Furthermore, the derived mathematical expressions for reference calculations are usually very complicated. In contrast to current methods, this paper proposes a very simple yet effective direct power control (DPC) method based on extended pq theory. By analyzing the instantaneous extended power of the line inductance, a simple and concise power compensation is analytically derived and added to the original power references. As a result, the dc voltage ripples are significantly reduced, and the grid currents remain sinusoidal even under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. In this paper, a highly reliable back-to-back (BTB) power converter is proposed for doubly fed induction generator-based wind turbines (DFIG-WTs). When a power switch open-circuit fault is encountered in either the grid-side converter (GSC) or the rotor-side converter (RSC), a four-switch three-phase (FSTP) topology is formed to avoid using redundant bridge arms, which reduces the power circuit complexity and minimizes the conduction and switching losses. A simplified space vector pulsewidth modulation technique is used to eliminate sector identification and complex trigonometric calculations. In addition, the influence of dc-bus capacitor voltage unbalance on the electromagnetic torque is analyzed in detail. The offset current components are calculated, and they are deducted from the reference values in the modified control strategies to suppress the dc-bus voltage deviation. Moreover, the power loss model of a BTB converter is analyzed in detail, and the efficiency study is performed in various post-fault situations. Simulations in MATLAB/Simulink are carried out to verify the performance of a DFIG-WT based on a FSTP BTB converter. Furthermore, the control hardware-in-the-loop setup with RSC and GSC separately simulated in a digital real-time simulator is applied for experimental verification of the proposed control strategy. Low-voltage dc distribution systems have gained significant attention over the last years, since they provide simpler and more efficient integration of distributed generators and storage devices, establishing a pathway to net zero energy buildings. In low-power units, transformerless utility interface is preferred to reduce footprint and losses. However, the lack of galvanic isolation introduces a common-mode (CM) path between the dc distribution bus and the utility service grounding, leading to the presence of high CM voltages at the dc bus feeders. The attenuation of the CM voltage reduces the touch voltage amplitude and leakage current, contributing to a safer environment. In this paper, a feed-forward active compensation of the CM voltage is proposed. It relies on utility voltage parameters, estimated by a phase locked loop, to generate a counter CM voltage; hence, it does not require previous knowledge of the system CM path model or the addition of voltage sensors. Experimental results show that this technique can attenuate the CM voltage to non-dangerous magnitudes without interfering with the microgrid differential mode behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper extends the application of a frame-angle-based (FAB) direct torque controller (DTC) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives to low and very low speeds. The FAB-DTC is intended for PMSM drives that are fed by $3\phi$ six-pulse wavelet-modulated dc–ac converters. The foundations of the FAB-DTC are based on regulating the $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages, in response to variations in the load torque and/or drive speed. The adjustments in $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages are created by changing the angle $\vartheta$ of the frame spanned by the $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages. In order to extend the FAB-DTC to low and very low speeds, the changes in $\vartheta$ are accompanied by changes in the maximum scale. The values of maximum scale and $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages are used to update or change the reference signals employed by the wavelet modulation to generate switching pulses to operate a $3\phi$ dc–ac converter. The complete PMSM drive system incorporating the modified FAB-DTC is implemented for a 10-hp PMSM drive system. The performance of the FAB-DTC is investigated for different changes in the command torque for various low and very low speeds. This paper proposes an improved second-order generalized integrator with frequency-locked loop (ISOGI-FLL) based control scheme for a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed voltage source converter (VSC) to mitigate the power quality problems. The steepest descent algorithm based maximum power point tracking is used to achieve the crest power from a solar PV array to improve solar power generation (SPG) into the grid as well as to maintain dc bus voltage of the VSC. The ISOGI-FLL-based control scheme is very effective for grid currents balancing and harmonics mitigation, at a variation of SPG and unity power factor operation. Simulated results are demonstrated using MATLAB/Simulink for load unbalancing and variation in solar insolation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated based on comparative performance with conventional algorithms. Test results of a developed prototype show satisfactory performance for different operating conditions like grid currents balancing, photovoltaic-distribution static compensator (PV-DSTATCOM) mode, and DSTATCOM-PV mode at variable solar insolation. The switched shunting resistor circuit is a classical and practical passive equalization scheme that nevertheless suffers from the voltage imbalance after the charging process. It results from the discrepancy of the shunting resistor and the physical characteristics of supercapacitor (SC) cells. In this paper, the distributed voltage equalization control strategies with the proportional-integral (PI) observer for the switched shunting resistor circuit are analyzed and compared. First, the charging and equalizing system is modeled as the switched system and the system observability is proved. The decentralized control and consensus control are analyzed and their shortages are presented. Then, the leader–follower cooperative control is proposed to improve the charging time while keeping the equalization performance. Meanwhile, the PI observer is designed to estimate the internal capacitance voltage of an SC precisely to avoid the effect of equal series resistance. The control convergence is proved by using the Lyapunov stability and switched system theory. This paper presents a new islanding detection method for synchronous distributed generation (DG). The proposed method is developed based on the combination of rate of change of exciter voltage (RCEV) and open–close circuit breaker (OCCB) at a DG connection point. Whenever the RCEV parameter is not sufficient enough to detect an islanding condition efficiently and correctly, the OCCB strategy will be triggered. The proposed OCCB strategy sends a switching command to one phase of the three-phase circuit breaker (CB), which connects the DG to the grid. In this way, the CB will be immediately opened and then closed. This switching condition will cause a variation in the value of RCEV. This variation is small for the conditions when DG operates in parallel with the main grid, whereas it will be large during the occurrence of islanding. The implementation of the proposed strategy is cost-effective because it only uses the CB at the DG output and does not require any extra equipment. The proposed approach is tested on two different systems including a hypothetical power system and the IEEE 33-bus test system in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results show that the proposed method eliminates the nondetection zone and also reveals high accuracy compared with previously introduced methods. Many of the renewable energy resources, like offshore wind, utility PV farms, are located far away from the load centers, which requires dc power transmission system to efficiently deliver power. Voltage-source converter solution is required in many applications due to the stability and compensation requirement. This paper presents a new voltage source converter topology for medium to high voltage dc application, named modular embedded multilevel converter (MEMC). MEMC is based on a three-level topology structure and consists of series-connected insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) bridge stacks, like the popular modular multilevel converter (MMC) and series-connected thyristor or press-pack high voltage integrated gate-commutated thyristor or IGBT stacks. The basic operation principle, control solutions, and the methods to commutate the thyristors are explained in detail. Due to the three-level structure, the total number of IGBT stacks are reduced by half compared with MMC, leading to much lower energy storage, weight, volume, and system complexity. Also by replacing part of the IGBT stack in MMC with thyristor stack, both of the system conduction loss and switching loss can be further reduced. An adaptive control of DPWM implementable in clamped-three-level inverters with two strings of photovoltaic (PV) panels in cascaded connection is proposed in this paper. The proposed modulation is developed based on the so-called circuit-level decoupling concept. It is able to provide balance line voltage even under unbalanced dc links. The unequal dc voltages appeared due to asymmetric maximum point of power trackings (MPPTs) are controlled by proper injection of zero-sequence voltage to the common mode voltage, while the total dc voltage is regulated based on the voltage commands generated by the MPPT of each string. Thus, both PV strings are able to be operated based on their MPPTs while there is almost no low-order harmonic distortion at the inverter output current. This paper investigates ac–dc–ac multilevel topologies for three-phase four-wire applications obtained from an interconnection of three-leg voltage-source converters. The topologies can be applied in line voltage regulators, universal active power filters, and uninterrupted power supplies. Operating principles, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique, and an overall control strategy are developed. The PWM and control strategies are suitable to regulate the dc-link voltages and to reduce the harmonic distortion, switching stress, and power losses. Simulation results are used to compare the proposed configurations with a conventional solution in terms of harmonic distortion, semiconductor losses, and others characteristics. Experimental results are presented to validate the theoretical considerations and were obtained by using insulated-gate bipolar transistors with dedicated drives and a digital signal processor with appropriated plug-in boards and sensors. In this paper, a fifth-order boost point-of-load converter is developed by cascading a modified fourth-order boost converter with a combination of L–C and diode. This topology has the following salient features: Single-switch topology, common ground between source and load, low-voltage stress across intermediate capacitors, and voltage gain same as other reported fifth-order boost converters with no common ground. Steady-state and dynamic analyses demonstrate the proposed converter's boosting feature and dynamic performance, respectively. A contoured robust Bode plot methodology is employed to design the robust voltage-mode controller to ensure load voltage regulation in the presence of uncertainties. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the designed controller guarantees the load voltage regulation and robust stability are obtained. A step-by-step robust controller design procedure is outlined. The salient features of the proposed converter and its robust performance are studied analytically, using the MATLAB platform, and validated experimentally on a 60-W prototype module. This paper presents a dual output power factor correction (PFC) converter for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. Here, a modified single-ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is proposed for a wide range of speed control and to achieve PFC at ac mains. The switching frequency of the converter is considered to be 20 kHz. The converter is designed to operate in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of operation, which reduces the size of the output inductor. The DCM mode to obtain PFC also reduces the sensor requirement as compared to the continuous conduction mode (CCM), where two voltage sensors and one current sensor add to the drive cost. The drive is proposed for universal ac mains (90–270 V ac). Simulated and experimental results are demonstrated to validate the performance of the drive during different operating conditions. This paper presents a step in microlevel photovoltaic (PV) summation technology for combining unsymmetrical PV modules with differences in specification and age, relocation on nonfertile land, or multilocation mounting by designing an add-on modular hardware interface to a multi-input single-output (MISO) dc bus, using an MISO controller employing a suitable maximum power point (MPP) tracker under partial shading/long distance/mismatching PV module conditions along with a sensor-less PV vector control inverter (PV–VCI) driving a three-phase asynchronous squirrel cage induction motor dedicated to irrigation, with the facility of autoconfiguration/autotuning at the beginning. A PV source gets automatically added/removed in a ramp profile in proportion to the load in steps, thus keeping on only when required, enabling high efficiency, minimum heating, and prolonged life as that of a PV module. The contribution includes a reduced PV energy cost per watt by 24.10%, improved return on investment by 27.48%, improved water discharge yield by 11.06%, and improved MPP tracker impact by 14.59% with 90.88% MISO system efficiency compared to a normal scheme. This paper investigates an ac–dc–ac multilevel power converter. The studied configuration is composed of two single-phase ac–dc–ac three-leg modules and series-connected H-bridges in the shared part of system. Because the proposed converter has shared legs between the input and output, it is employed in applications with same input and output frequency. Uninterrupted power supply and unified power quality conditioner are application examples for this converter. Such multilevel topology has lower dc-link voltage rating, which, consequently, presents low switch blocking voltages when compared to conventional topologies. System model, a space-vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy to symmetrical and asymmetrical dc-link voltages, and an overall control strategy to adjust the system variables are presented. A power flux analysis shows the operation zone in which the individual dc-link voltage balancing is possible. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. The series connection of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) allows operation at voltage levels higher than the rated voltage of one IGBT and has less power semiconductor costs compared to multilevel topologies. However, voltage unbalance during the switching transient is a challenge for series-connected device application. This paper presents an field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based voltage balancing strategy for multiseries-connected high-voltage (HV)-IGBTs including an FPGA-based active voltage balancing control (AVBC) circuit integrated into the gate driver and the control for multiseries-connected IGBTs. An optimal current control strategy for asymmetrical hybrid multilevel inverters (MLIs) is proposed in this paper enabling their use on motor drives, static synchronous compensators, and photovoltaic and wind generators, where a fast and precise current regulation is required. A key feature of these highly efficient converters is that an ac machine (motor or transformer) operates according to an open-end winding configuration, connected on one side to a main MLI and, on the other side, to an auxiliary two-level inverter (TLI). The first efficiently controls the main power stream operating at a low switching frequency, while the TLI acts as an active power filter, exploiting a conventional high-frequency two-level pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique. The proposed control scheme optimally exploits the key features of the two inverters by suitably sharing the control task. In fact, a predictive current control is assigned to the MLI, which can be accomplished by low switching frequency operations, while the high switching frequency of the PWM-operated TLI is exploited to accomplish a fast and precise closed-loop current control, processing only a part of the power stream flowing through the system, thus producing low power losses. In order to prevent the power switching devices (e.g., an insulated-gate bipolar transistor, IGBT) from shoot-through in voltage-source converters during a switching period, the dead time is added either in the hardware driver circuits of the IGBTs or implemented in software in pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes. Both solutions will contribute to a degradation of the injected current quality. As a consequence, the harmonics induced by the dead time (referred to as “dead-time harmonics” hereafter) have to be compensated in order to achieve a satisfactory current quality, as required by standards. In this paper, the emission mechanism of dead-time harmonics in single-phase PWM inverters is, thus, presented considering the modulation schemes in detail. More importantly, a repetitive controller has been adopted to eliminate the dead-time effect in single-phase grid-connected PWM converters. The repetitive controller has been plugged into a proportional-resonant-based fundamental-frequency current controller so as to mitigate the dead-time harmonics and also to maintain the control of the fundamental-frequency grid current in terms of dynamics. Simulations and experiments are provided, which confirm that the repetitive controller can effectively compensate the dead-time harmonics and other low-order distortions, and also, it is a simple method without hardware modifications. This paper presents a hybrid pulse width modulation-based discontinuous modulation (D-HPWM) strategy with dc-link voltage balancing for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter drive. The results are then compared with continuous-hybrid-PWM (C-HPWM) to check the performance improvement. The HPWM strategy uses both the advantages of carrier- and space-vector-based PWM strategies. The duty cycles are generated using the carrier-based strategy to reduce the computational time and complexity of the system and redundant vector states are used to keep the two dc-link capacitor voltages balanced. As discontinuous PWM (DPWM) reduces the switching losses considerably compared to the continuous PWM, the DPWM strategy is developed in this paper for the HPWM-based strategy. Detailed comparison studies are then carried out in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS to show the conduction and switching loss distribution with change in modulation index for different power switches. A 54.0-kW surface permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is used for this simulation studies. Moreover, the total inverter loss and losses in each insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) are also compared. Detailed experimental performance analysis is also carried out with a scaled down prototype of a 6.0-kW surface PMSM, NPC inverter, and real-time emulator DSpace, to show the capacitor voltage deviation with both control strategies. This paper presents an improved dc-link voltage balancing algorithm for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter by considering phase current direction. Detailed studies on the effects of change in load current direction on the dc-link capacitor voltages are presented. A maximum value of power factor is numerically derived, above which it affects the capacitor voltage balancing capability. Compared with the previously presented research work, the inputs to the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation block are the three phase currents and the difference between the two capacitor voltages. Depending on the states of the two dc-link capacitor voltages and phase current direction, redundant voltage vector sequences are selected. The selected vectors keep the capacitor voltage deviations within 5% of the total dc-link voltage. Two zero switching vectors (i.e., PPP and NNN) are also removed from all subsectors of the earlier proposed strategy, which one used to produce higher common-mode voltages. Detailed simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper for a 6.0-kW surface permanent-magnet synchronous machine. This paper presents a novel finite-control-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) approach for grid-connected converters. The control performance of such converters may get largely affected by variations in the supply impedance, especially for systems with low short-circuit ratio values. A novel idea for estimating the supply impedance variation, and hence the grid voltage, using an algorithm embedded in the MPC is presented in this paper. The estimation approach is based on the difference in grid voltage magnitudes at two consecutive sampling instants, calculated on the basis of supply currents and converter voltages directly within the MPC algorithm, achieving a fast estimation and integration between the controller and the impedance estimator. A single-phase bridgeless Cuk ac/dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier with positive output voltage is proposed in this paper. For low output voltage product applications, the rectifier is designed to convert high input voltage to low output voltage. Due to no bridge diodes required and thus decreased input conduction losses, the proposed rectifier efficiency can be improved. The proposed rectifier operates in discontinuous conduction mode, and the current-loop circuit is hence not needed. In addition, only a single switch is used in the rectifier to simplify the control circuit design. A simple translation method to have the positive output voltage in the Cuk converter is presented in the rectifier to reduce the component counts and the cost. The operational principles, steady-state analysis, and design procedure of the proposed rectifier are addressed in detail in this paper. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 150-W rated prototype circuit with input of 90–130 Vrms, 60 Hz, and output of 48 Vdc have verified the validity of the proposed rectifier. This paper proposes a novel bidirectional inverter, named series ac-link inverter. This three-phase inverter belongs to a new class of partial resonant ac-link converters in which the link is formed by a series ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. The input and output of this converter can be either dc, ac, single-phase, or multiphase. Therefore, they can appear as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac configurations. In all of these configurations, the ac capacitor is the main energy-storage element, and the inductor is merely added to facilitate the zero-current turnoff of the switches and their soft turn-on. Due to the zero-current turnoff of the switches in the proposed converter, the use of SCRs with natural commutation is possible as well. Since the current and voltage of the link are both alternating, no bulky dc-electrolytic capacitors are required in this converter. This paper mainly focuses on bidirectional dc to three-phase ac conversion. This single-stage inverter can step up or step down the voltage in a wide range. If galvanic isolation is required a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. In the proposed inverter, the power can flow in both directions, and therefore, it is an excellent candidate for battery-utility interface and electric vehicle applications. This paper proposes a comprehensive and systematic approach in developing a new switching lookup table for direct power control (DPC) based on grid virtual flux estimation, implemented in a grid-connected three-phase ac-to-dc converter. The approach provides detailed information regarding the effects of a particular converter voltage space vector to the instantaneous input active and reactive power distributions in the converter system. Thus, the optimal converter switching states are able to be selected by the switching table, allowing the smooth control of the active and the reactive power for each sector. The usage of input ac voltage sensors for synchronization and input power calculation is avoided by applying a virtual flux concept in the control scheme. The grid virtual flux estimation technique is used to extract the grid voltage information from the converter switching states, line currents, and dc-link output voltage. Detailed explanation and analysis regarding the development of virtual flux DPC utilizing the proposed switching lookup table is given in this paper. Finally, the steady-state as well as dynamic performances of the proposed controller is tested both in simulations and laboratory experiments. This paper proposes a new circuit configuration and a control scheme for a single-phase current-source inverter with a power decoupling circuit which is called as the active buffer. The proposed inverter achieves a low-dc-input voltage ripple and also provides a sinusoidal current that can achieve unity power factor, without large passive components in the dc bus such as smoothing inductors and electrolytic capacitors. These components are conventionally required in order to decouple the power pulsation caused by the single-phase power source. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed inverter are demonstrated experimentally. From the experimental results, the input voltage ripple is 8.87%, and the output current total harmonic distortion is 4.24%. In addition, an output power factor of 99% and a maximum efficiency of 94.9% are obtained. Finally, it is confirmed that the maximum power densities of the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit are 2.75 kW/L at the switching frequency of 70 kHz and 4.86 kW/L at the switching frequency of 80 kHz, respectively. Multilevel converters are a proven solution for medium-voltage and high-power applications, including renewable energy conversion. Developing 6.6-kV converters is a key goal for the wind turbines industry. Considering the voltage rating of commercially available semiconductors, five-level converters are necessary to reach 6.6 kV. The five-level active neutral-point-clamped converter (5L-ANPC) is one of the most advantageous topologies among five-level multilevel converters. This paper presents a new 5L-ANPC topology that overcomes the features of the previously employed 5L-ANPC topology. Along this paper, the properties and working principle of this new 5L-ANPC are explained. Finally, the validity of the new converter is validated via simulation and experimental results. This paper presents the direct compensation of the switching interval error of the effective voltage vectors by the dead time of a pulsewidth modulation voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI). The output voltages of a three-phase PWM-VSI are distorted and have voltage errors from the dead time to avoid the shoot-through of inverter arms and the time delay of the gate drive. Voltage distortion increases the harmonics of the output voltages and decreases control performance. This paper presents a simple and direct compensation technique to solve this problem in a three-phase VSI. The practical switching output voltages are determined by the dc-link voltage, the switching signals of each phase, the dead time, the time delay, and the current polarities of each phase. For these reasons, output voltage errors are not constant. In order to analyze the dead-time effect in the actual switching voltages of each phase, the practical switching voltages in a sampling period of a space vector PWM (SVPWM) method are calculated according to the current polarity. In the calculation, the dead time, the time delay of devices, and the voltage drops on power devices are included to consider nonlinear voltage distortion. From these practical switching voltages during the switching intervals in a sampling period, the average output voltages of each phase can be derived, and the output voltage errors between the voltage commands and the average output voltages of each phase are obtained. The SVPWM switching intervals of each phase can be derived by the average output voltages that are calculated according to the current polarity and nonlinear voltage distortion to compensate for the output voltage errors. With the simple detection of the current polarity, the practical errors of the switching intervals of each phase can be compensated by the addition of the compensated switching time. As ac-to-ac power conversion becomes increasingly important in applications such as grid power control and motor control, demand for a plug-and-play converter has increased. Traditional voltage-source-inverter-based ac-to-ac power converters such as the back-to-back converter require dc-link capacitors that limit their reliability or significantly increase their size and cost. This paper examines a plug-and-play concept for achieving ac-to-ac power conversion via the direct-ac/ac power electronic building block (AC-PEBB). The AC-PEBB is a compact self-contained cell requiring no intermediate energy storage. It can be used in a variety of ac/ac power electronic applications such as matrix converters and controllable network transformers. This paper details the design of an 800-V 100-A AC-PEBB prototype to be used in a 13-kV 1-MVA application. This paper discusses the use of a cascaded multilevel converter for flexible power conditioning in smart-grid applications. The main feature of the proposed scheme is the use of independent dc links with reduced voltages, which makes such a topology an ideal candidate for medium- and high-power applications with increased reliability. The developed control strategy regulates independent dc-link voltages in each H-bridge cell, and allows the selective and flexible compensation of disturbing currents under a variety of voltage conditions without requiring any reference frame transformation. The selective control strategies are based on the decompositions proposed in the conservative power theory, which result in several current-related terms associated with specific load characteristics. These current components are independent of each other and may be used to define different compensation strategies, which can be selective in minimizing particular effects of disturbing loads. In this paper, a three-phase three-switch three-level boost (Vienna) type pulse-width modulation rectifier is proposed as an active front-end power factor correction (PFC) rectifier for power quality improvement in telecom load. A sensorless voltage control technique is proposed and it does not rely on any input voltage information results in reliable and robust operation. A brief description on the principle of operation and the most advantageous modulation method of the proposed system are discussed. The feasible switching states are identified for the proposed active front-end converter resulting in reduced switching stress and dc ripples. A triangular carrier based control logic is applied and the input current reaches sinusoidal shape without the need of sensing the input voltage. The detailed analysis of front-end PFC converter is carried out by equivalent circuit analysis. Also, the complete loss and efficiency calculation of the converter is explicitly carried out with the help of hardware design guidelines. The performance of the proposed system and its capability of operating satisfactorily in the event of failure of one phase of the mains is verified through MATLAB Simulation, and the results obtained are presented. The experimental setup rated for 9 kW is developed in the laboratory to validate the simulation results. This paper presents a variable switching point predictive current control (VSP $^2$CC) for the quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The proposed VSP $^2$CC aims to remove the output current error on the ac side, as well as the inductor current and capacitor voltage errors of the quasi-Z-source network on the dc side of the converter. Unlike the previously presented direct model predictive control (MPC) strategies for the qZSI, the proposed control scheme can directly apply the switching signals not only at the discrete time instants, but at any time instant within the sampling interval. Consequently, the shoot-through state can be applied for a shorter time than the sampling interval, resulting in lower output and inductor currents ripples. Experimental results based on field programmable gate array are provided to verify the effectiveness of the introduced control method. This paper presents a dc/dc buck–boost converter topology with high-voltage gain and dual outputs. Unlike many of the high step-down/step-up dc/dc converters, this topology uses a relatively ower number of LC components and three active semiconductor devices switched in a nonoverlapping way. Due to the duty cycle limitation, high gain (typically more than 4) is very difficult to achieve in a single-stage regular buck–boost dc/dc converter. In the proposed converter, the overall gains at both the output ports are nonlinear functions of duty-cycles of the power devices, which help achieve an overall step-down/step-up gain of 10–15. An experimental prototype converting 48 V dc to ±5 V dc at 100 W with closed loop control is developed in order to verify the operation and effectiveness of the proposed converter structure.
