A modular linear transformer driver (LTD) is a novel fast-discharge high-pulsed power source for primarily stored energy. In LTDs, a large number of stages (or cavities) can be connected in series or in parallel conveniently to directly generate high power pulses of 50–200 ns with the required voltage or current. This paper introduces an LTD stage developed by us recently. This LTD stage consists of 14 bricks in parallel. Each brick contains two 40-nF capacitors and a compact multigap gas spark switch in series. The switch is a modification of our original version, and the diameter and the height of which have been reduced to 98 and 127 mm, respectively. The circuit model of this stage is established in PSPICE, and its output parameters are obtained through simulation. Driving a rough-matched resistive load of 0.27 \Omega, its output current peak is 300 kA with an overall rise time of about 110 ns at a charged voltage of the capacitors of about \pm90 kV, agreeing well with its simulation result. Pseudospark switches are fast-closing low-pressure gas discharge switches with a hollow-cathode geometry. They can be triggered optically or by electron injection, where electrons emitted from a cold cathode emitter are accelerated in the electric field and initiate breakdown. The efficiency of charge carrier accumulation in the hollow-cathode structure determines the performance of the switch operation. The advantages of such switches include high hold-off voltage, high conduction current, fast current rise time, low delay and jitter time, and long lifetime. In this paper, the operating characteristics of a pseudospark switch, triggered by a carbon-nanotube (CNT)-coated electron emitter, are presented. The electron emitter is fabricated by coating randomly oriented CNTs on silicon substrate using chemical vapor deposition method. Field emission characteristics of CNTs are determined and then used as part of the trigger electrode which is integrated into an in-house constructed pseudospark switch. The operating characteristics of the switch are tested under different background pressures and different trigger voltages. Delay and jitter time under different working conditions are analyzed. In this paper, pulsed-power technology was applied to plasma printing, which is a maskless plasma patterning solution that is being developed for the fabrication process of printed electronics. A high-voltage pulse source was developed and applied to a high-speed plasma printer to improve the speed of plasma printing. Experiments on plasma printing were used to compare the performance of the pulse source with the currently used alternating-current source. From plasma experiments, an electrical plasma model was derived for the plasma printer. Different parameters were investigated, such as the plasma energy as a function of gap distance, applied voltage, and the total amount of plasma that was generated. From these experiments, a connection was made between the plasma energy and the print effectiveness to arrive at optimal parameter values for fast plasma printing. It was concluded that higher plasma energy leads to higher print effectiveness, which leads to an increase in plasma print speed by a factor of 10 when using the pulse source. Pulsed power technology is one of the technological foundations in high and new technology research, which has extremely broad development and application prospect. Gas switch is one of the key elements in pulsed power devices, and electrode erosion is a key restrictive factor in high-power gas switch development and application. According to the 1-D equation of heat conduction and thermal equilibrium equation near the electrode surface, this paper researches the electrode heat conduction mechanism, establishes the electrode erosion calculation model, calculates electrode erosion heat fluxes and their peak powers caused under different discharge conditions, and proceeds to calculate the depth of electrode etch pit. Calculation results indicate that arc joule heat is the main reason for electrode erosion when discharge current is not too high. In the light of different discharge parameters, that is, peak current, electric quantity, and current waveform, as well as single discharge electrode erosion experiments, the calculation formula of etch pit depth is fitted. The possibility of mode switching from one pulse to another in a 6-cavity gigawatt magnetron with axial extraction of radiation through a horn antenna (such a magnetron is known as the MDO, i.e., magnetron with diffraction output) using a weak (200–300 kW), short (15-ns), and single-frequency RF signal was demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulations in our earlier work. This mode switching exploits the symmetric nature of the MDO that facilitates the use of any eigenmode as the operating mode. All scenarios of mode switching were considered using common properties of dynamical systems with two stable states separated by an unstable saddle point. In this paper, we continue to study the problem of mode switching, but this time for a 12-cavity MDO, for which we found splitting of the radiation frequency for each eigenmode owing to its different longitudinal distributions. Since splitting manifests as a bifurcation of frequency for definite values of the applied axial magnetic field, scenarios of frequency switching for this 12-cavity magnetron are considered. In this paper, we describe a novel multiple-switch pulsed-power technology. The basic idea is that the heavy switching duty is shared by multiple switches. The multiple switches are interconnected via a transmission line transformer, in such a way that all switches can be synchronized automatically and no special external synchronization trigger circuit is required. It can produce either exponential or square pulses, with various voltage and current gains and with a high degree of freedom in choosing output impedances. The topology has been implemented on a prototype with ten spark-gap switches. Pulses with a rise time of 10 ns, a width of 55 ns, a peak power up to 810 MW, a peak voltage of 77 kV, and a peak current of 11 kA have been achieved at a repetition rate of 300 pps. The energy efficiency of the circuit is about 93%. In addition to spark gaps, any overvoltage-controlled switch can be applied in this topology. As an example, we demonstrate the synchronous switching of multiple thyristor switches for current multiplication. The triggering discharge behavior of the rail gap influences the jitter of discharge delay and inductance of the spark switch due to the formation of multiple spark channels in the rail-gap switch, which is related with the development of avalanche in the discharge process under the nanosecond triggering pulses. In this paper, the PIC/MCC method is used to investigate the avalanche development under a triggering pulse. A model of intershielding is proposed in the PIC/MCC method considering the effect of the space charges. From the simulation and experimental results, it has been clarified that the avalanche process can be controlled by the statistical delay time of the effective primary electrons. In order to investigate the different features of the positive leader propagation in the rod–plane and inverted rod–plane gaps, the discharge experiments in a 3-m rod–plane gap and a 3-m inverted rod–plane gap were carried out under switching impulse voltage. The positive leader propagation process was recorded by using a high-speed CCD camera. Some aspects to describe the positive leader propagation characteristics of the rod–plane and inverted rod–plane gaps are obtained and compared in this paper, including the critical corona radius, the average continuous leader inception voltage, the axial leader velocity, and the final jump length. In this paper, the circuit model capable of dealing with magnetizing characteristics of the magnetic cores and switch prefire is established for linear transformer driver (LTD) cavities in PSPICE. Through simulation, the effects of switch prefire on other components in LTD and its output current pulse have been analyzed associated with the variation of energy loss in magnetic cores. Simulation results indicate that a switch prefire in one cavity would produce oscillations added to the charge voltage of the other switches in this cavity and cavities adjacent immediately. The magnitudes of such oscillations have an intimate relation with the magnetic core loss equivalent resistance. The loss equivalent resistances in the range from 4 to 6 \Omega have produced moderate voltage oscillations. Experiments on the 300-kA LTD cavity developed by the Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology proved that such oscillations added to the charge voltage of other switches are likely to increase the breakdown probability of them. Modern pulsed power technology has its roots in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and it was driven overwhelmingly by applications in national defense carried out by several countries, especially the U.S., U.K., Russia, and China. The following decades, particularly the early 1990s, witnessed an increased interest in compact systems with pulse repetition rate that could be used in nondefense applications such as treatment of material surfaces by plasma and beam interactions, treatment of pollutants, food sterilization, medical applications, etc. This spawned a new generation of pulsed power components (solid-state switches) that led to completely solid-state modulators. This paper describes how the pulsed power technology used originally in beam sources and cathodic arcs has converged to produce power sources for plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) and related technologies. A new pulsed-power generator based on a Marx generator (MG) is proposed in this paper with a reduced number of semiconductor components and with a more efficient load-supplying process. The main idea is to charge two groups of capacitors in parallel through an inductor and take advantage of the resonant phenomenon in charging each capacitor up to twice as the input-voltage level. In each resonant half-cycle, one of those capacitor groups is charged; eventually, the charged capacitors will be connected in series, and the summation of the capacitor voltages are appeared at the output of a pulsed-power converter. This topology can be considered as a modified MG, which works based on the resonant concept. The simulated models of this converter have been investigated in a MATLAB/Simulink platform, and a laboratory prototype has been implemented in a laboratory. Metal–oxide–silicon (MOS)-gate-structure-based power semiconductors, such as MOS field-effect transistors, insulated-gate bipolar transistors, and MOS controlled thyristors, are widely used as high-voltage switch and power modulator components in pulsed-power applications. The power semiconductors are generally connected in series and in parallel in order to increase their maximum switching voltage and current, respectively. It is important to suppress overvoltage or switching stress on power semiconductors connected in series and parallel during an extremely short switching time and at fast operating frequency. Generally, gate drive control techniques and methods for the suppression of high voltage are required. To suppress overvoltage and switching stress, this paper proposes a simple and effective active clamping method rather than the use of a snubber circuit with free switching condition modulation. Based on comparative switching experiments, the active clamping method is expected to suppress switching stress and overvoltage while load and switching conditions are changed without modification of the high-side auxiliary circuit for pulsed-power applications. When small currents are interrupted by a vacuum switch, it is well known that the chopping current and the associated overvoltage are observed. Many investigations on the current-chopping phenomena in alternating-current (ac) circuits have been carried out, but there are no data available on inverter circuits in spite of their recent wide application to synchronous motor systems. In this paper, chopping-current levels and the overvoltages in an inverter circuit under a simple three-level pulsewidth-modulated control are investigated. As a result, the mean chopping-current level is three to four times higher than that in an ac circuit. In particular, high chopping currents occur only when the timing of the current interruption by the vacuum switch synchronizes with that of the inverter's switching, which we call “double chopping.” High chopping current due to double chopping might be harmful since the high overvoltage proportional to the chopping-current level could damage the insulation of electric equipment. In this paper, a new way for high-voltage \mu\s -range quasi-square pulse generation based on a ns source pulser and a chopping spark gap is introduced. The source pulser delivered high-voltage source pulse with front edge at ns range to the chopping gap, and the chopping gap chopped the long flat back edge of the source pulse, so that a quasi-square pulse was formed on a high-impedance load. The breakdown-delay characteristics of the chopping gap, which was the most important, were studied in detail. Results of the experiments showed that when the pulse voltage peaked by the first peaking gap was a little lower than or approximate to the breakdown voltage of the chopping gap, the chopping gap broke down at the back edge of the peaked pulse so that the breakdown-delay time can increase from 30 ns to several \mu\s. The breakdown-delay time of chopping gap is confined to the flat top of the peaked pulse. By using this mechanism of breakdown delay, a quasi-square pulse with pulse width of 1.95 \mu\s, amplitude of 55 kV, and front edge of 22 ns was produced on a 1.15-\k\Omega load. Repetitive chopping pulses at 0.2 Hz were provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the chopping gap. By contrast to the conventional chopping, four essential conditions were concluded. Based on these results, a controllable trigatron-type chopping gap system is introduced to ensure chopping stability. A compact wideband antenna integrated with a pulse-forming line for transient pulse radiation is proposed in this paper. It can be used in the fields such as ultrawideband (UWB) radar, ground-penetrating radar, UWB communications, etc. This antenna is integrated with a solid-state switch and a planar Blumlein pulse-forming line. The dimension of the antenna is 300 mm \times 300 mm \times 3 mm. In the experiment, the switch was triggered by a laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm. The peak power of a single antenna was 14.45 MW when the applied voltage was 17 kV. A Gaussian doublet pulse with a duration of 1.5 ns and a peak–peak amplitude of 305.7 V/m at a distance of 2 m from the antenna along the main beam direction was recorded in the experiment. It is difficult to design a standard gate driver for optimal switching control of a static induction thyristor (SI-Thy) because of its unique internal structure and the direct commutation switching characteristic between the gate and cathode terminals during the transient turn-on and turn-off switching phases. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple and effective gate driver for achieving optimal fast turn-on and stable switching operations in an SI-Thy under hard-switching conditions. To achieve faster turn-on switching time with shorter gate delay time, impedance matching between the SI-Thy and the turn-on driving circuit component in the gate driver can be realized with additional circuit modification through this paper. To ensure higher stabilities in the turn-off switching phase, forced commutation techniques and additional auxiliary circuits in the gate driver have been devised to suppress the latchup and to eliminate potential ringing possibility. We have demonstrated that our designed and tested gate driver for realizing optimal switching characteristics of an SI-Thy is effective, particularly in the gate driving circuits for various pulsed-power switching applications. This paper presents a frequency-tunable high-power mesoband microwave radiator that uses a switched quarter-wavelength oscillator and a patch antenna. The oscillator is charged and then switched by an annular electrode between the inner and outer conductors. The length of the oscillator is adjustable by moving the electrode in order to generate different frequency resonances. A coupler with a quasi-constant coupling coefficient was employed to output a high-power mesoband microwave. A novel high-power wideband patch antenna with a bandwidth of 64% and a maximum gain of 8.1 dB was used to radiate the generated mesoband microwave. The experimental results of the radiation factor were as high as 182 kV at 333 MHz, and the measured center frequency of the radiated mesoband microwaves ranged from 227 to 345 MHz. In this paper, starting from the project requirements, a 1.2-MJ pulsed power supply (PPS) module for a high-power laser system has been developed. The main circuit of this module consists of a high energy density capacitor bank, a spark gap switch, a magnetic switch, a trigger generator, and a load subsystem. Due to the superiority in the stability and service life, the two-electrode construction for the spark gap switch, high peak currents, and rise time of the currents is selected. Since a two-electrode spark gap switch has no separate trigger electrode and must be directly overvolted by the trigger generator, a small Marx generator has been designed and constructed for the advantage of the proven compactness and electrical performance. The effect of the magnetic switch represents a couple of functions. One is to block the triggering pulse produced by the Marx generator. Another is to permit the discharging current coming from the main capacitor bank. Finally, the measured discharge current waveform of the 1.2-MJ capacitive PPS module is demonstrated to be over a 300-kA peak current and a 500- \mu\s pulsewidth. This paper details the testing of a commercially available gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) for application in inductive-store power supplies. GTOs have been used as a component of inductive-store systems directly and as part of compound switches. These GTOs are generally available commercially and typically have extensive datasheets. However, the inductive-store application differs significantly from conventional switching applications, which significantly reduces the utility of the datasheets; GTOs are typically used at 100–1000 Hz in a fairly continuous manner, whereas in an inductive-store system, a GTO may be conducting for a relatively long time before doing a single turn off. Switch is one of the key issues in the pulsed power generation and applications. The closing switch is an essential part in capacitor-based energy-storage systems, and the spark-gap switches are a popular choice. These switches have very limited lifetime due to electrode erosion resulting from localized arc heating in high current. To extend the switch lifetime by minimizing electrode erosion, rotary arc gap (RAG) switches are proposed in previous literatures. The rotation of the arc can be achieved by providing magnetic field from external or self-induced by arc current. This paper investigates a RAG switch working in open air. It has a coaxial cylindrical structure. The arc is driven by an axial magnetic field which is generated by the coils that are placed both at the top and bottom of the switch. The coils are connected with an inner electrode. The switch can operate in a wide voltage range of 0.5–24 kV, and its specifications of current and coulomb per shot can reach 320 kA and about 730 C, respectively. The results of high-current experiments show that the electrode erosion is slight. Rotating arc velocity is measured by B-dot probes. The relationship between arc velocity and the current and magnetic flux density is obtained from the experimental data. The switch voltage drop is also measured in these experiments. The electrode erosion is a serious problem for pulsed power switches working under high current. A rotary-arc gap switch (RAG) is the switch form that can reduce the electrode erosion through the fast rotation of the arc. A RAG with a coaxial cylindrical structure is designed in this paper, mainly composed of two electrodes and two coils. The finite-element-analysis software Ansoft is used to simulate and analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of the switch. The simulation shows that the distribution of the magnetic field generated by the coils is symmetric and is with a mirrorlike structure. The existence of the electrodes will weaken the magnetic field because of the reaction of the eddy currents. Cutting the electrodes is the way to solve the problem, and cutting the outer electrode is much more valid than cutting the inner electrode. However, the number of slots in the outer electrode does not influence much. When the RAG works, the arc will rotate fast around the inner electrode due to the action of a Lorentz force under the axial magnetic field, as is convenient to reduce the electrode erosion and prolong the life of the switch. A triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is an important component in pulsed power systems due to its quick switch, rapid dielectric recovery, small volume, convenient trigger system, simple structure, etc. A sample of field-breakdown TVS is fabricated, and its turning-on process is described in this paper. The initial plasmas play an important role in the process of TVS operation; its development includes two parts: 1) generation and 2) expansion. Based on the field breakdown principle, an electron emission model is chosen to describe the generation of initial plasmas. This paper presents a novel crowbar system of 10/350-\mu\s pulse current. The crowbar pulse current system includes a crowbar pulse current waveform forming circuit, a controlling unit, and a measuring unit. The crowbar pulse current circuit consists of a main air triggered switch, a triggered vacuum switch (TVS) which is used as the crowbar switch, and two trigger signal generators. A kind of TVS is designed and fabricated. Its triggering characteristics are tested, and experimental results show that, compared with other reported similar switches, the TVS has excellent characteristics such as wide operating voltage scope from 1.3 to 120 kV, short discharging delay time with maximum delay time at 400 ns, and its jitter at \pm10 ns. Based on the TVS, the crowbar 10/350- \mu\s pulse current circuit and its controlling circuit are designed. With a 36-\mu\F storage capacitor C and a 6-\mu\H waveform forming inductance L, a 10/350- \mu\s pulse current waveform with a maximum of 150 kA can be generated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a high-voltage pulsed-power system based on low-voltage switch–capacitor units that are connected to a current source for several applications such as plasma systems. A modified positive buck–boost converter topology is used to utilize the current source concept, and a series of low-voltage switch–capacitor units is connected to the current source in order to provide a high voltage with a high voltage stress (dv/dt) as demanded by the loads. This pulsed-power converter is flexible in terms of energy control because the stored energy in the current source can be adjusted by changing the current magnitude to significantly improve the efficiency of various systems with different requirements. Solid-state modulators based on pulse transformers offer the advantage that, with the turns ratio of the transformer, the primary voltage could ideally be adapted to available switch technology, and a series connection of switches could be avoided. To increase the power level, several semiconductor switches must be connected in parallel, and a balancing between the different switches must be guaranteed. Here, the matrix transformer concept, which is based on multiple primary and/or secondary windings, as well as flux adding, offers superior performance with respect to the achievable rise times. However, the influence of the parasitic elements on the voltage and current distribution is quite involved. In this paper, the influence of the parasitic elements of the matrix transformer on the current balancing and on the winding voltages is investigated based on reluctance models. Additionally, the inherent current balancing of the matrix transformer for windings mounted on different cores is explained. It is our interest to design and develop a high-power pulser system employing an electrical discharge in a spark gap. The type of discharge generates short electric pulses capable of both the characteristics of a fast rise time and a high repetition rate. Such a switch pulser has wide applications in the industry. To generate the electrical discharge in the spark gap in an efficient manner is very important for the switching operation. The regime of the operation utilizes the residual plasma in the interpulse recovery of the spark gap to increase the repetition rate. Therefore, the mechanisms of the discharge in a controlled manner following the electrical breakdown of the spark gap, such as the plasma generation in the spark channel and the dielectric recovery process as well as the residual plasma in the post-spark-discharge period, are of great importance. The understanding of the type of the spark-gap discharge for the switching at a high repetition rate beyond 1 MHz has been the primary goal. The typical voltage and current ratings are below 1 kV and several amperes, respectively. In many pulsed-power applications, the flatness of the output pulse is an important characteristic to enable proper system operation, whereas a pulse flatness within less than a few percent has to be achieved. In power modulators based on capacitor discharge, this voltage droop is mainly defined by the input capacitance. In order to overcome this problem, in power modulator systems, compensation circuits are added, whereby in spite of a smaller storage capacitor, a flat pulse top is achieved. Depending on the pulse duration, different approaches for voltage droop compensation exist. For short pulse durations, in the range of several microseconds, only passive solutions or bouncer circuits are applicable. In this paper, the design and optimization of a two-winding inductor bouncer circuit are presented in order to achieve an output voltage droop of less than 1%. Due to the realized galvanic isolation, a new degree of freedom is obtained, which allows an adaptation of the bouncer circuit's voltage and current ratings to standard semiconductor switches. With an optimal design of the two-winding inductor bouncer circuit for the existing system, the volume of the input capacitor is reduced by a factor of 10.5, and the stored energy is decreased by a factor of 24 compared to a system without a bouncer circuit. Enabling technologies are being developed at Sandia National Laboratories to improve the performance and flexibility of compact pulsed-power drivers for magnetically driven dynamic materials properties research. We have designed a modular system that is capable of precision current pulse shaping through the selective triggering of pulse-forming components into a disk transmission line feeding a strip line load. The system is composed of 240 200-kV 60-kA modules in a low-inductance configuration that is capable of producing 250–350 kbar of magnetic pressure in a 1.75-nH 20-mm-wide strip line load. The system, called Genesis , measures approximately 5 m in diameter and is capable of producing shaped currents that are greater than 5 MA. This performance is enabled through the use of a serviceable solid-dielectric insulator system which minimizes the system inductance and reduces the stored energy and operating voltage requirements. Genesis can be programmed by the user to generate precision pulse shapes with rise times of 220–500 ns, allowing characterization of a range of materials from tungsten to polypropylene. In this paper, a novel six-channels annular plasma-jet chamber is designed and embedded in the trigger electrode of the three-electrode gas switch to generate multichannel plasma jets without air flow, which is used to trigger the gas switch to form multichannel discharge. This paper describes the construction and experimental tests of a 12-kV high-voltage high-action generator based on reverse-switching dynistor (RSD) assembly. The main RSD unit consists of seven 76-mm-diameter dynistor pieces connected in series with a blocking voltage of about 2.4 kV, a magnetic switch based on a 1K101 amorphous alloy core, the trigger system based on a saturable transformer, and a 16-mm RSD assembly; the trigger current could reach 2 kA in amplitude with 1-\mu\s duration under 10 kV. The working voltage rate of this RSD unit is about 8–12 kV. Experiment on a 2.2-mF capacitor test bed under 12 kV working voltage, the switch current amplitude reached 150 kA with 300-\mu\s duration; the transferred charge is about 26.5 C and the action is 2.94 \MA^2\s, respectively. In this paper, dc arc characteristics in different high pressure gas atmospheres were studied, both in pure N2 and in mixed gases of 20%N2 and 80%H2 at 5 atm. The experiments were conducted in a demountable arc-quenching chamber with double contacts and a transparent glass shield in a 270 V dc circuit. With a high-speed camera, the arc motion is analyzed. The results indicate that H2 and N2 mixed gases have better performance for dc arc extinguishing. Images of pure N2 and 20%N2–80%H2 mixed gas dc arc appearances are presented. Particle-in-cell simulation method is used to integrally study the operation process of a low-density plasma opening switch (POS) with or without external applied magnetic field. The experiment has successfully simulated the space–time variety of electromagnetic field and kinetic behavior of electrons in the POS. The phenomena that happened in the operation process of POS, such as magnetic field penetration, magnetic insulation, irregular movement of nonuniformity particles, and aberrance of the field in electromagnetohydrodynamic operation process, were analyzed to investigate the open process of POS based on the characters of electromagnetic field. The analysis results proved that angle magnetic field which had the same direction with the drive current magnetic field can improve the performance of the POS. The conclusion of this paper provides a general solution method to optimize the configurable parameters and the controllable movement of plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
