Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor. An extensive revision of the IEEE C37.011 ‘Application Guide for TRV for AC High-Voltage circuit Breakers’ has been in process for the last four years. The main aim was to introduce the two- and the four- parameter description of the transient recovery voltage (TRV) as used in IEC Switchgear standards that have been introduced in the revisions of Standards C37.04 and C37.06. These two standards are being concurrently revised, but IEEE C37.011 provides the necessary explanations on TRV characteristic in advance. This paper presents an online method to monitor the conditions of the substation grounding grid. The proposed method utilizes phase-to-ground faults occurring in downstream feeders as test current sources and the neutral of a specially selected feeder as the electrode for GPR (ground potential rise) measurement. The measured fault currents and GPRs are then used to estimate substation grounding grid impedance. The method, once established, can monitor the grounding grid impedance continuously and automatically, and the trend of the impedance change can be observed. As a result, the proposed method can yield much more reliable information on the substation grounding conditions. The method also overcomes many disadvantages of the offline methods. A modular multilevel converter control system, based on converter energy storage, is proposed in this paper for two different control modes: active power and dc voltage. The proposed control system decouples the submodule (SM) capacitor voltages from the dc bus voltage. One of the practical applications is the management of active redundant SMs. A practical HVDC system with 401-level MMCs, including 10% redundancy in MMC SMs, is used for validating and demonstrating the advantages of the proposed control system. This paper also presents a novel capacitor voltage balancing control based on \max–\min functions. The surface voltage of an insulator assumes importance for understanding tracking and flashover characteristics. Until now, determination of surface voltage of insulating surfaces is left to simulation software and such simulations are left unverified experimentally, leading to uncertainty of the results, which may sometimes be erratic with improper choice of boundary or initial conditions or inaccurate material properties, nonlinearities etc. The paper presents a novel method, using which the surface voltage of any insulating surface such as insulator strings or transformer bushings can be measured. Unlike a conducting surface, the measurement of insulating surface voltage using voltage dividers would be erratic as the measuring arrangement itself will vary the voltage division due to the local unknown impedance between the insulated surface and hv conductor. Recently a method for measurement of surface voltage of an insulated conductor using cylindrical strips was reported. In this paper, based on analytical derivations, a more generalized method of measurement, applicable to any point on an insulating surface of arbitrary geometry is proposed using circular-disc strips. The proposed experimental method is applied to insulator strings and transformer bushings and validated by simulation of the entire systems. Electrical equipment of the floating nuclear power plant operates in a long-term vibration environment. Ground faults occur frequently and are often accompanied by arc, a reliable arc suppression algorithm for the generator stator winding is necessary. In this paper, an active arc suppression method is proposed by connecting a controllable voltage source to the generator neutral point. Through regulating the neutral point voltage to be equal in amplitude and opposite in phase to the fault potential, the fault point voltage can be clamped to a low level to achieve arc suppression. Since the generator's phase potential contains certain harmonic components, the controllable voltage source includes fundamental and third-order harmonic components. To accurately calculate the output voltage, online calculation methods for the fault location, fault potential and grounding capacitance are proposed. The accuracy of the fault location method is verified by simulation and dynamic test. And simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC software show that the proposed method can achieve effective arc suppression at different ground fault conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct lightning poses a serious threat to the safety of power systems. In recent years, the lightning fractal model, which can reflect the fractal characteristics and randomness of lightning leaders, has been gradually applied to direct lightning protection for substations, transmission lines, etc. However, since few studies have linked simulations with experiments, the reliability of the lightning fractal model in terms of attachment probability prediction lacks experimental verification. In this paper, a series of attachment tests are carried out under a rod-rod gap. The equivalence between simulation tests and natural lightning is discussed, and the influencing factors of the attachment results are investigated. The attachment probability is simulated and compared to the test value under each test configuration. The test results show that the fractal dimension of discharge channel is consistent with the observation results of natural lightning. Under different configurations, the test value of attachment probability basically conforms to the simulation value. In general, the dispersion of the test results is slightly greater than the simulation results, but the average probability differences are all within 10%. The test results strongly indicate that the lightning fractal model is of good reliability in the prediction of strike probability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Phase–locked loop (PLL) is commonly used for the grid-connected voltage-source converter (VSC) to synchronize with the grid. Under weak grid conditions, it has been found that the frequency-dependent characteristic of the network impedance inherently introduces a positive feedback loop into PLL. Previous studies focused on the PLL analysis intuitively believe that the positive feedback loop will deteriorate the dynamic performance of the PLL. However, this conclusion is not rigorous since only the dynamic of the PLL is considered and the theoretical analysis is insufficiency to reveal the influence of the positive feedback loop on system stability. In this paper, the impact of the frequency-dependent network on VSC stability is quantified in terms of the overall system based on the damping torque analysis. It is found that the influence of the positive feedback loop on stability depends on the parameters of the PLL and the damping of the dominant eigenvalues. Besides, an angular frequency feedback scheme is proposed to eliminate the adverse effect of the frequency-dependent network and enhance the stability of the VSC under weak grid conditions. This paper presents the induced voltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when triggered lightning taking place at a distance of 40 m. It is shown that the induced voltage waveforms exhibit three components including a slow increase preceding the initial negative peak, following a rapid polarity reversal and the attenuated oscillations. The waveform parameters are defined in this paper. The observed negative peak value ranges from −47.1 kV to −7.5 kV. The positive peak value ranges from 5.3 kV to 20.9 kV, and the peak to peak value ranges from 12.8 kV to 63.2 kV. The test results show that the negative peak value of the induced voltage at the terminal of distribution generated by nearby negative triggered lightning generally exceeds the positive peak value, and in some cases the negative peak value even reaches twice the positive peak value. The negative 10%-90% rise time ranges from 2.3 μs to 88.5 μs, and the average oscillation period is about 18 μs. Both negative and positive peaks of induced voltages show good linear relationship with the peaks of lightning return stroke current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Point-on-wave (POW) is a single-event characteristic of voltage dips, influencing the performance of sensitive equipment, such as AC contactor and wind turbines. However, definition and calculation of POW are unsolved issues. The existing definition of POW is for single-phase dips; it does not consider three-phase dips. Moreover, existing POW calculation methods are inaccurate. This paper proposes a definition of POW as a single-event characteristic for three-phase voltage dips. Then, it proposes a POW calculation method based on space vector, including POW detection and angle calculation. The proposed method is based on the ellipse characteristics during the dip-stage and non-dip stage. The proposed method does not depend on zero crossing for angle reference. To verify the performance of the proposed method, a power-system simulation model is built to generate voltage dips with different origin. An ion-flow field is very important for the design of an HVDC transmission line. Due to the space ions resulting from corona discharge, there are few practical methods to measure the space electric fields around HVDC transmission lines. In this paper, a compensation method is presented to measure the space potential in the ion-flow field. The space potential can be obtained by applying an adjustable voltage source to a suspended conductor, increasing the voltage step-by-step and measuring the current flowing through the voltage source or the ground-level ion current density under the suspended conductor. When the current is equal to zero or the ground-level ion current density is equal to that without the suspended conductor, the output voltage of the voltage source is the space potential to be measured. The paper first introduces the principle of the measurement method. Then, the feasibility of the method is testified on unipolar and bipolar reduced-scale models. This paper investigates the voltage profiles and harmonic impacts of high-speed trains on the traction power-supply system (TPSS) and primary utility system. Power-quality (PQ) assessment has become not only a computing tool for TPSS design and planning, but also an indispensable technique for utilities to estimate the accurate PQ impacts from the railway systems. Therefore, to achieve comprehensive PQ assessment in TPSS, a dynamic fundamental/harmonic power-flow (DF/HPF) method is developed in a companion paper, while further application of the technique is described in this paper. The fundamental and harmonic results calculated in a 24-h period, such as loading levels, voltage profiles, unbalance, power loss, and harmonic distortions have been computed. In addition, the statistical measured background harmonics of the utility system are represented by Weibull function and considered in the harmonic evaluation. The unbalance and harmonic impacts are investigated and checked with national standards in this paper. IEEE Standard 1547 defines grid connection standards for distributed resources (DRs). This standard sets requirements for harmonic performance, which are particularly relevant when converter-interfaced DRs are considered. Specifically, the standard limits the allowable harmonic current injected by a DR, assuming grid voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) is harmonic free. In this paper, it is demonstrated, both mathematically and experimentally, that the harmonic current injection of a converter-interfaced DR depends highly on the level of PCC background voltage. This paper presents a mathematical formulation that enables the impact of PCC voltage harmonics on the harmonic current injection of a converter-interfaced DR to be determined via experimental identification of the converters frequency coupling matrix. Experimental tests show that an IEEE 1547-compliant solar inverter with measured total demand distortion (TDD) of 0.66% for an undistorted PCC can produce TDD levels in excess of 20% in the presence of 3% voltage distortion. It is concluded that TDD metrics, as employed in IEEE Standard 1547, provide little insight into the field performance of converter-interfaced DRs when background voltage harmonics are present. Powers of three-phase aggregates of single-phase static linear loads supplied with a nonsinusoidal voltage are the subject of this paper. It is demonstrated in this paper that the supply current of such systems with a nonsinusoidal voltage can be decomposed into six mutually orthogonal components associated with distinctive physical phenomena in the load, two of which do not exist at a sinusoidal voltage. Such decomposition enables evaluation of contribution of these phenomena to the supply-current rms value increase and the power factor decline. A power equation and definitions of powers in such systems in the presence of voltage harmonics are proposed. Digital relays are capable of computing the negative-sequence current on both primary and secondary sides of the transformer along with the phase difference between these two negative-sequence currents. By using both phase and magnitude information, negative-sequence current could be used to detect minor turn-to-turn faults involving 3% of the transformer's windings or more. Turn-to-turn faults may still occur even if no current is flowing on one side of the transformer, such as during energization. With no current flowing in the secondary windings of the transformer, negative-sequence current-based algorithms become insensitive. This paper introduces a relay prototype, using both negative-sequence current and negative-sequence voltage, which retains its sensitivity during energization. The relay's performance for several commonly encountered system scenarios, such as overexcitation, current-transformer saturation, nonzero fault resistance, transformer energization, and external faults were also examined. The experimental results presented in this paper indicate that the algorithm proposed in this paper is faster and more sensitive than restrained current differential protection and is capable of detecting turn-to-turn faults occurring during transformer energization. This paper proposes a time-domain method of characteristics to simulate the impulse corona with background space charge, and derives the ordinary differential equations of the space charge generated by the impulse corona along the electric field line. The corresponding boundary conditions, the selection of time step and space step, and the update strategy of space charge are given. The calculation result of the impulse corona onset voltage is consistent with the test result, proving that the background space charge has almost no effect on the impulse corona onset electric field which is obtained by Kaptzov's assumption. The q-u curve obtained by simulation is compared with the test results to verify the effectiveness of the simulation method. The simulation method is used to obtain the development process of space charge during the application of the opposite polarity impulse voltage. By analyzing the space charge distribution during the process of impulse corona, and the corresponding microscopic charge distribution and macroscopic charge amount at different corona states, the characteristics of impulse corona are explained. Determining the Marx generator configuration, including the values of series and parallel resistors as well as the number of series and parallel stages to obtain standard lightning impulse (LI) waveforms, is usually done in a trial and error process in the high voltage test fields of power transformer manufacturers. This practical process may take excessive time and is boring for test engineers. In this paper, a simple simulation method is proposed to model the LI test circuit of the transformer by computer, which is helpful in identifying the Marx generator set up. This method is based on modeling the LI test circuit as well as the transformer's high frequency impedance in discrete frequency domain. The measured frequency response of the transformer is used to model its high frequency characteristics. Digital signal processing methods are used to simulate the circuit and obtain waveforms. This paper analyzes the effects of shunt capacitors installed on the low voltage sides of 10/0.4 kV distribution transformers on the operation of these transformers. Using the results of an extensive measurement campaign, this paper compares: real and reactive power losses, secondary-side current, and primary-side apparent power before and after the installation of transformer capacitors. The following four cases of reactive power compensation are considered and discussed: adequate, conditionally adequate, and total compensation, as well as overcompensation. The presented analysis helps to identify transformer substations where the initial compensation should be changed or adjusted, in order to improve transformers’ operational performance. Voltage dependencies of real and reactive power demands of the transformer-supplied loads are taken into account, based on the previously identified load characteristics in the considered networks as well as voltage dependence of reactive power of shunt capacitors. This paper introduces an averaging control strategy of the phase-unit losses of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The quantitative analysis of the MMC phase-unit loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions is carried out by investigating the individual component of the MMC arm currents. It shows that the unbalanced arm currents will result in unbalanced phase-unit losses. To address this issue, this paper proposes a predictive closed-loop-control-based zero-sequence voltage injection method that results in much averaged loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions. The essence of the new method is that it adjusts the three-phase sinusoidal references so that the unbalanced arm currents are fully utilized to average phase-unit losses. In the event of a single line to ground (SLG) fault in a non-effectively grounded distribution network, the faulted current is weak (only a few amperes or less) and the existing devices cannot accurately judge the faulted feeder. In this paper, we proposed algorithms that combine complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and Hilbert transform to construct a multi-criteria comprehensive voting method. First, CEEMDAN algorithm is used to decompose the zero-sequence current to obtain the IMF1(the first intrinsic mode function) component and the Hilbert transform is used to calculate the instantaneous amplitude and instantaneous phase. Then, according to the three largest instantaneous amplitudes information, we constructed the characteristic instantaneous phase, characteristic instantaneous energy relative entropy and characteristic instantaneous zero sequence current polarity criteria from the phase, energy and polarity, respectively. Finally, we proposed a comprehensive voting method, which is specifically shown as follows: when two or more criteria show that one feeder or the bus has an SLG fault, it is voted that the feeder or the bus has an SLG fault. In contrast, if the judgment results of the three criteria are inconsistent, then we would return to recalculation and then vote. A novel traveling-wave-based fault-location algorithm for multiterminal transmission lines is introduced in this paper. Existing traveling-wave fault-location methods that based on the data measured at line terminals lack reliability and accuracy because time synchronization is needed, which brings error. To solve this problem, the complex structure of multiterminal power system is divided into several fault identification branches, current at the midpoint of each branched is measured, a novel fault-location algorithm is proposed, and the time synchronization error is eliminated. A line-based device is designed to measure the current at the midpoint of each branch. An accurate value of the traveling wave speed can be obtained by merely applying the data record in one measuring device. Thus, the fault-location accuracy is improved. The system model applied in this paper comprises one transmission line and two tapped lines, and the proposed method applies to networks with more terminals. On transmission lines where switching surges are not mitigated with closing resistors and/or surge arresters, high-speed reclosing on a line with trapped charge will produce high overvoltages that have been measured above 3 p.u. Careful simulations of these switching events using available electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs consistently produce significantly higher voltages than the measurements. This indicates a phenomenon present on the line that acts to reduce the switching surge magnitudes but is not typically modeled. This paper aims to identify the required simulation practices in reproducing the field measured overvoltages in EMT simulations and investigates the sensitivity of results to modeling approaches and electrical parameters. Field measurements from a switching surge test of a 230-kV line without surge mitigation have been used for model comparisons. Variations in frequency-dependent line modeling, ground resistivity, skin effect, shunt conductance, parallel lines, and source-side detail have been tested in an unsuccessful attempt to decrease the difference between the field measurements and the higher simulation overvoltages. It is demonstrated that even though the pattern of the transient voltage waveforms can be reproduced very well using frequency-dependent line models, the magnitude of the maximum overvoltage is significantly overestimated unless the effect of corona is considered. Two types of corona models are tested, and both demonstrate that corona is the primary factor that allows the simulations to correctly reproduce high peak overvoltage measurements. Harmonic loads and unbalanced loading in a distribution transformer lead to higher losses, an increase in temperature that leads to premature failure, and a shorter lifetime. To prevent these difficulties, the rated power of a transformer supplying nonlinear loads or unbalanced load is reduced; commonly known as derating. In this paper, an alternative to traditional loss based derating is proposed. It is shown that derating might actually not be required when contrasted with the traditional approach. A perspective is presented on how to make the kVA rating “adaptive” and utilize the same kVA rating with or without harmonics. Actual field data are presented to support this viewpoint. One of the most widely used installation types of power cables is inside nonmetallic ducts. Ampacity calculations for this type of installations were summarized back in 1957 by Neher and McGrath. The method has been standardized in the IEC 60287 family of standards. It is shown in this paper that there is a noticeable mismatch between the IEC standard calculations for steady-state conditions with experimental tests and finite-element method simulations. After an in-depth investigation, it was found that the source of the discrepancy between reality and the standard is an inaccuracy in the calculation of the heat transfer of the air between the cable surface and the internal duct surface. The standard calculations simplify the problem too much, resulting in relative large errors. A more precise formulation, yet simple enough for computer implementation, is proposed in this paper. The accurate calculation of the steady-state temperature is obtained from first heat transfer principles. Inrush currents in transformers can have very disruptive effects, such as voltage sags, false tripping of the protective devices, and mechanical stresses in the transformer windings. This paper shows that there are operating situations that may cause a transformer to draw abnormally high inrush currents. Examples include the normal operation of offline uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) systems, interruptions, voltage sags, and notching. These conditions may produce inrush-like currents of more than twice the value of the “normal” maximum inrush caused by energizing at voltage zero-crossing. For this condition, the term “phase-hop” is used in this paper. Laboratory experiments were performed on four different transformers (1 kVA) with varied characteristics and show the impact of phase-hop in the magnitude of inrush currents. The experiments are also used to validate the Electromagnetic Transients Program model used for the analysis of multiple cases. In addition, the behavior of the magnetic flux in a transformer under phase-hop is investigated and compared with different operating conditions using finite elements. Voltage imbalances are one of the most severe challenges in electrical networks, which negatively affect their loads and other connected equipment. This paper proposes a voltage support control strategy to mitigate the voltage imbalance in inverter-based low voltage distribution networks. The control scheme is derived taking in mind the following control objectives: a) to increase the positive sequence voltage as much as possible, b) to decrease the negative sequence voltage as much as possible, c) to inject the power generated by the primary source, and d) to minimize the output current of the inverter. The innovative contribution of the proposed solution is based on the design of a control algorithm that meets the aforementioned objectives without resorting to communications with other grid components. This paper presents a new multilevel cascaded-type dynamic voltage restorer (MCDVR) with a fault current-limiting function. This topology can operate in two operational modes: 1) a compensation mode for voltage fluctuations and unbalances and 2) short-circuit current-limiting mode. The current-limiting function of the MCDVR is performed by activating antiparallel thyristors during the short-circuit fault, and deactivating them during normal operation. The mathematical model of the MCDVR system is also established in this paper. The control scheme design and optimal parameter selection are outlined based on the detailed theoretical analysis of the converter. The transient states of the MCDVR in the compensation mode and current-limiting mode are also analyzed. Series impedance and shunt admittance parameters of transmission lines are fundamental data for various online and offline power system studies. This paper shows that the active power, reactive power, and voltage magnitude (P, Q, V) data measured at the two ends of a transmission line are sufficient to determine the positive-sequence line parameters. The phase-angle information is not essential. Since the P, Q, and V data are readily available from the supervisory control and data-acquisition systems, the proposed method can be easily implemented in existing control centers. Algorithms, characteristics, performances, and potential applications of the proposed method are presented in this paper. This paper proposes solutions to the problem of voltage sags caused by distributed generators anti-islanding protection. This is a recently identified power-quality (PQ) concern resulting from the increasing penetration of distributed generators into distribution networks. This problem has been previously investigated by the authors and it was revealed that it can seriously affect PQ indices as well as distributed generators reconnection procedures. However, no solutions have been formerly proposed or investigated. In this context, this paper investigates several potential solutions to be adopted by the utility and/or by the DG owners and presents a thorough evaluation of their main advantages and disadvantages. Besides this investigation, simple step-by-step procedures for assessing the effectiveness of each solution are described. The presented studies and procedures will guide the utility engineers in decision-making process associated with the choice of reasonable mitigation techniques to this problem. Electrical parameter estimation of the soil is an essential step for the design of grounding systems, and is based on optimization techniques that minimize the error between a theoretical function and the field measurements. The determining factor for reaching the most adequate solution depends on a method for solving the indefinite integral of the theoretical function, as well as the accuracy and performance of the parameter estimation. This paper presents a precise and tested technique for achieving these goals known as Chebyshev polynomials. This paper also introduces an error calculation procedure for the truncation of the Chebyshev series. Besides this, this paper points toward an optimization algorithm for estimating soil parameters by use of measurements associated with differential evolution. Low-voltage (LV) feeder voltage magnitude and unbalance are often the constraining factors on a feeder's capacity to absorb rooftop photovoltaic (PV) generation. This paper presents a new probabilistic method for voltage management in distribution networks through the placement of distribution static compensators (dSTATCOMs) and on-load tap changers (OLTCs) considering the reactive capability of PV inverters in multiple LV and medium-voltage distribution networks. The method uses a modified particle swarm optimization. In this paper, several scenarios for the placements of multiple dSTATCOMs with and without embedded energy storage systems using both reactive and real power compensation are investigated in combination with an OLTC equipped with independent per-phase tap-changing control. The voltage constraints in the proposed method are statistically defined using three duration curves. These are the voltage unbalance, maximum voltage, and minimum voltage duration curves. The method is comprehensively tested for varying load and PV generation based on data from a real Australian distribution network with considerable unbalance and distributed PV generation. An online approach based on application of search coil for transformer winding fault detection is presented in this paper. Earlier attempts report use of search coil for the detection of transformer interturn fault. This paper extends application of search coil for detection of winding displacement in addition to interturn fault identification. Experimental results based on specially designed 10-kVA transformer are presented to analyze search coil voltages during healthy and faulty conditions. The algorithm detects phase ($U$ , $V$, $W$), side (LV, HV), and precise location of the fault. Discrimination between interturn fault and winding radial displacement is also achieved by search coil voltage analysis. The results are experimentally verified based on impedance analyzer plots. Experimental analysis indicates that the proposed method is independent of load on the transformer, vector group, nature of winding, balanced or unbalanced source voltage, source voltage harmonics, inrush, and overexcitation conditions. In this paper, the finite-elements method was used to analyze the approximation being typically used in the international standards for the calculation of the touch voltage, appearing at earth faults in power networks. The calculations in this paper were performed on the series of earthing systems applied in practice and the results are compared with the results of the widely accepted approximate method from standards. The origin of discrepancy in the results is analyzed and evaluated. The outcome of this paper is the justification of the application of Thevenin's theorem and the development of the higher accuracy equations for the resistance between feet and remote earth in case of the application of high resistivity additional surface material. This paper presents a new control strategy for a distributed static compensator (also known as distributed STATCOM or DSTATCOM), configured to regulate the reactive (VAr) flow at a point in a transmission system. This new control strategy takes into account the operating VAr limits of that reactive flow in determining the steady-state output of the DSTATCOM. The new control strategy applies a slow reset regulator (SRR) to slowly bias the VAr set point of the DSTATCOM master controller to maintain its steady-state output within a target bandwidth. The operating result maintains an appropriate VAr reserve level from the DSTATCOM for dynamic events in the system. This paper also presents a new algorithm to calculate the operating constraints of the SRR that reflect the VAr flow at the local or remote point in the transmission system and the allowable VAr thresholds for that flow. These allowable thresholds can be utilized to the full extent to lower the steady-state output of the DSTATCOM, maximize its VAr reserve for dynamic events and reduce equipment and associated system operating losses. In this paper, a new islanding detection method (IDM) is proposed to dynamically estimate islanding occurrence. The proposed dynamic estimators estimate amplitudes and phase angles of the current injected by the grid at the point of common coupling with the distributed generation (DG) in addition to the DG's bus voltage. A distributed two-level algorithm is proposed to detect an islanding condition for single and multi-DG configurations. Analytical design and transient analysis are carried out for the islanding detection problem to determine the nondetection zone (NDZ) of the proposed islanding detection algorithm. A local low-frequency meshed communication network is sufficient to achieve distributed islanding detection capability for a general multi-DG network with negligible NDZ. This paper describes the application of the finite-elements method for determining the distribution of losses over windings and a detailed thermal-hydraulic network model for determining the value of the hot-spot factor and the hot-spot temperature. The influence of nonuniform losses in the conductor of the windings and the influence of nonuniform cooling are clearly separated. A detailed discussion of the components included in the hot-spot factor is given in this paper, enabling proper understanding of this complex and important quantity. The case study transformer was a 100-MVA oil power transformer with oil-directed water-forced cooling. The method was applied within the scope of the project of increasing the power of a hydro power station by 12%. The task was to calculate the temperatures and to recommend whether the reconstruction of the transformer is necessary. The developed calculation method and software were hitherto used for transformer design (in the production or the reconstruction stage of transformers) and it is the first application to give an answer as to whether it is possible to increase the power of an existing transformer. This paper applies a con-resistant trust mechanism to improve the performance of a communications-based special protection system to enhance its effectiveness and resiliency. Smart grids incorporate modern information technologies to increase reliability and efficiency through better situational awareness. However, with the benefits of this new technology come the added risks associated with threats and vulnerabilities to the technology and to the critical infrastructure it supports. The research in this paper uses con-resistant trust to quickly identify malicious or malfunctioning (untrustworthy) protection system nodes to mitigate instabilities. The con-resistant trust mechanism allows protection system nodes to make trust assessments based on the node's cooperative and defective behaviors. These behaviors are observed via frequency readings which are prediodically reported. The trust architecture is tested in experiments by comparing a simulated special protection system with a con-resistant trust mechanism to one without the mechanism via an analysis of the variance statistical model. In this paper, typical strengths, fault levels, and source impedances are thoroughly analyzed and calculated for the study of quality of supply in 230/400 V 50 Hz distribution systems. Considering all the disparity in distribution network design, this study is based on a comprehensive database containing typical arrangements and equipment in U.K./European systems, as well as on fully documented generic network models supplying four residential load subsectors in the U.K., i.e., from metropolitan to rural areas. Thus, this paper proposes an alternative method for determining reference values of network supply impedances and short-circuit fault levels at different points and locations of the medium-to-low voltage distribution system. The aim of this study is to provide a wider range of benchmark values than those stipulated in the IEC 60725 Standard, which only defines a single-reference threshold of public supply impedances for all types of distribution systems and residential customers. This paper proposes a novel layout for a grid-connected DC wind farm (DCWF) and investigates the performance under continuous operation and direct lightning strikes particularly for high soil resistivity. The DCWF employs internal dc grid that supplies generated power to the host AC utility through high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link. The proposed layout ensures sustainability of power supply against potential interruptions of DCWFs either during normal conditions or lightning incidents to comply with grid codes regulations. During continuous operation, the proposed layout safeguards the entire DCWF cables against flow of return currents to avert derating of conductor ampacity. Besides, protects WT nacelle switchgear and entire interface converters against hazards of surge currents. Furthermore, an effective grounding system design is proposed to introduce a low impedance path for system return currents, minimize voltage drop across grounding impedance and thus maximize DCWF delivered power to the grid. A detailed system that sufficiently represents models of system cables, grounding network and interface converters is built to verify the proposed scheme significance. The obtained results assure the capability of proposed layout to cease return currents via cable sheath during continuous operation and provide superior mitigation of lightning-associated transient voltages and currents. An electric potential appears at floating wires located within a strong electric field. This phenomenon can be used to supply small isolated communities situated close to Extra-High Voltage transmission lines. This non-conventional distributed generation system has been studied for the last years. However, to improve the power generation system the optimal position of the floating wires, number of wires used, bundle radius, and type of wires must be properly identified. This paper presents a mathematical model solved with genetic algorithm to design a collector system with optimized induced voltage and minimized project cost, identifying the optimal reactor used for voltage regulation. The algorithm was applied to design a collector system that can tap-off 100 kW from a 230 kV transmission line. The trade-off between objectives and the Pareto optimal solutions were evidenced via several simulations using the weighting sum approach. Incipient faults in underground cables are often resulted from electric stress and cable aging. If such faults occur as current spikes in short periods, permanent faults may appear. Moreover, incipient faults may disturb electricity transmissions because of detection delays and thus, precise well-timed protection decisions cannot be made. Therefore, one of the most important considerations of utilities in the monitoring process is to recognize this type of faults from other conditions as soon as possible. In this paper, a precise approach based on CUmulative SUM and ADAptive LInear NEuron has been proposed. In addition to its high-speed detection ability, the practical on-line implementation of the proposed approach is simple as well. The simulation results in EMTPWorks environment demonstrate that the proposed approach has a strong capability in distinguishing the cable incipient faults from other similar conditions in distribution systems. In this paper, a new synchronous machine model is developed for electromagnetic transients program type simulations. The stator circuit is expressed in the abc phase domain. The machine model is represented as a Norton equivalent with a current source in parallel with a constant Norton admittance. The machine equations are reformulated so that the computational effort required for the modeling of the machine is reduced. Test studies demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed synchronous machine model and show that the proposed model is computationally more efficient than the existing constant conductance phase domain model and voltage-behind-reactance model. A method is proposed in this paper to determine the harmonic impedances in low-voltage networks in a stochastic way. The consequences of resonances for harmonic propagation and stability of power converters are summarized. By using Monte Carlo simulation, the method includes the uncertainties in customer impedances, specifically due to electronic loads and local generation. The uncertainty in customer impedance is included by considering probability distribution for the resistive, inductive, and capacitive parts of the impedance. The concept of transfer impedance is used for phase-to-neutral connections. A method is developed and applied to two existing low-voltage networks in Sweden. Results show that, for these two networks, the resonant frequencies decrease around 28% once photovoltaic panels are installed. This paper addresses the resonance problem in a parallel-inverter-based grid-connected system. Harmonic interactions between inverters and the grid exhibit various number of complicated characteristics that threatens the system stability and power quality. In this paper, a method of harmonic resonance analysis is proposed to investigate the resonance problem in a multi-inverter grid-connected system based on resonance modal analysis (RMA) and participation factor (PF) calculations. Initially, an impedance-based analytical approach is employed and expanded to an electricity distribution network that is dominated by multiple inverters with LCL filters and proportional resonant controllers. Then, the RMA is introduced to investigate the resonant interactions among inverters and the grid. Specifically, harmonic resonance characteristics are addressed through transfer functions and the proposed method considering variation of inverter number, different inverter combinations, and critical system components. Harmonic distortions at a point of common coupling (PCC) are caused by the harmonic sources in both supply system and customer facilities. In order to verify compliance with harmonic limits for an operating facility, it is essential to determine the contribution of a facility to the harmonic distortions measured at the PCC. Over the past many years, a significant amount of research work has been conducted in developing different harmonic analysis methods and especially harmonic contribution assessment methods. A common need of this line of research is consistent test systems that can be used to verify/validate a proposed method or to compare different approaches. To address this gap, a benchmark test system representing a typical medium-voltage/low-voltage network supplying industrial loads is proposed in this paper. Foil-winding transformers with high currents in low voltage winding normally have copper/aluminum bars as leads of the coils. A practical solution for locating bar leads without increasing the size of the active part is to flatten the coil in the leads zone causing a deformation. Abnormalities in the leakage reactance have been identified in this type of transformers. In order to take this effect into account, this paper proposes a correction to the mathematical formulation for calculating the leakage reactance in transformers with deformations in the low voltage winding. Three methods for calculating the leakage reactance have been compared for four real case studies: the proposed formulation, the commonly used formulation, and detailed simulations with the finite element method in three-dimension (FEM3D). The leakage reactance calculated with the proposed method has been found to have an improved accuracy compared with the one calculated using the formulation without correction in all case studies. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed correction in the formulation makes it possible to increase the accuracy in the calculation of leakage reactance, avoiding the need to resort to detailed simulations with FEM3D. In high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems comprising overhead line (OHL) sections as well as cable sections, the dc cable system is exposed indirectly to lightning strokes. In case of HVDC cable systems with extruded insulation the present test recommendations do not specify lightning impulse test levels related to rated system voltage. Instead, preliminary electromagnetic transient studies are required to determine the absolute maximum lightning impulse voltage the cable might experience. Within this paper, the general lightning behavior of OHL-cable mixed systems subsequent to the occurrence of a backflashover as well as a shielding failure is investigated for a 525 kV HVDC transmission scheme. This paper presents a modeling method to calculate occurring lightning overvoltages along a dc cable embedded between OHL sections. Based on a detailed parametric study using time-domain simulation, maximum lightning impulse voltages along the cable system are determined, and evaluated with regard to impulse level and polarity.
