This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. This paper proposes a resonant switching cell model to analyze and design the single-ended resonant dc–dc converters. The single-ended zero-voltage switching (ZVS) converters such as the Class E converter are efficient for megahertz switching because they feature low turn-on and turn-off switching losses. Also, they use only a ground-referenced switch, allowing a simple gate drive circuit. In this paper, we investigate the single-ended resonant converter with the small input inductance, whereas the conventional Class E converter has a large input inductance. The main contribution of this paper is to propose the resonant switching cell as an analytic model that simplifies the analysis and the design of the resonant dc–dc converters. Furthermore, this paper presents the design method of the resonant switching cell model for minimizing the resonant current magnitude and conduction loss while the converter maintains ZVS property. The experimental results from a 10-MHz GaN-based prototype demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the analysis and design based on the proposed resonant switching cell model. This paper investigates the operation of the back-to-back neutral point clamped (BTBNPC) converters when the ac voltages on both ends are asynchronous. The zero-sequence injection (ZSI) technique has been used to extend the linear modulation range of the pulsewidth modulation operation. This paper investigates the ZSI of the BTBNPC to maximize the dc-bus voltage utilization while the ac voltages of both ends have different magnitudes and phases. This study further explores the reactive current injection to reduce the risk of overmodulation when grid voltages surge. The combination of these techniques can extend the operation range of the BTBNPC over varying ac voltages of both ends with the available dc-bus voltage. Four-level hybrid-clamped inverter is a newly proposed topology that can operate under a wide voltage range without switches connected in series. However, when it is applied in medium voltage high power conversions, the flying capacitors in each phase will occupy a huge volume and a high switching frequency is required to restrain the voltage ripples. In order to overcome this drawback, a four-level active neutral-point clamped inverter is discussed in this paper, which consists of only six switches and no diodes or flying capacitors are required. In order to balance the neutral-point voltages under the full power factor and modulation index range, a capacitor voltage balance method based on carrier-overlapped pulsewidth modulation is proposed in this paper. The upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection and the central dc-link capacitor voltage is balanced by adjusting the duty cycles of switching signals slightly. First harmonic analysis (FHA) is arguably the most widely used analytical technique for wireless power transfer (WPT) circuits due to its simplicity. Although FHA can provide closed-form solutions, the existence of rectifier diode forward voltage drop and higher order harmonics, especially the second and third harmonics at variable duty cycle operation, can significantly deteriorate its accuracy. This paper presents an accurate and efficient method called enhanced multiple harmonic analysis (eMHA) for the optimal design and optimal control of WPT systems. The eMHA method considers the nature of nonlinear rectification networks under nonsinusoidal current and reexamines the concept of the equivalent load. As a result, the rectified WPT system is transformed into a series of linear systems with complex load impedances. The steady-state electric quantities can be then explicitly calculated. This enables eMHA to seamlessly work with numerical optimization algorithms to facilitate the automated design and optimization of WPT systems. An example of optimal design and optimal control of a 10 W WPT system is demonstrated. The results obtained by eMHA and FHA are also compared. A prototype of the designed circuit was constructed. The accuracy and effectiveness of eMHA are verified by experimental measurements. With the increasing of switching frequency in pulsewidth modulated motor system, common mode current (CMC) seriously affects the reliable operation of motor system and it has become a problem that cannot be ignored. This paper proposes a mathematical model of CMC and conducts detailed time–frequency characteristics analysis of CMC. The influence of several key parameters of motor system, such as distributed capacitance, dc bus voltage, and inverter switching frequency, on CMC characteristics has been analyzed in detail, and the corresponding variation rule of CMC oscillation amplitude and attenuation period/time has been summarized. The experimental results are presented to verify the correctness of theoretical analysis. The paper confirms that removing antiparallel silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) from SiC-based inverters offers positive effects without critical impact on inverter loss and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues, moreover, the removal of SBDs reduces the inverter losses in many cases and noise emissions. This conclusion leads to the possibility to improve the power densities by removing SBDs. However, the removal of SBDs may cause some disadvantages such as an increase of the reverse conduction loss and influence of the body diode recovery phenomenon. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation of these advantages and disadvantages is necessary. In this paper, design criteria are proposed to clarify the conditions in which SiC-based inverters without SBDs have advantages over those with SBDs from the viewpoint of losses. On the other hand, to achieve the removal of SBDs, it is also necessary to confirm that removing SBDs does not cause severe EMI issues. The paper confirms that switching noises are reduced by the removal of SBDs; this is due to the larger damping effect of the SiC mosfets without SBDs than that of SiC mosfets with SBDs. This paper presents a fault-tolerant operation for dual three-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet machines (SPMSMs) that were both electrically connected on three winding phases and mechanically connected on one shaft. The open-phase fault-tolerant operation is considered in dual three-phase SPMSMs drive thus combining motor drive of three-phase and single-phase. The proposed method controls the torque of each motor with different phases using a single inverter. In order to control these motors, the torque and current are distributed between the motors with the specific ratio. Methods for minimizing torque ripple and copper losses and maximizing the output torque of the three-phase motor are stated in this paper. Accordingly, a system with cost-effective and enhanced reliability is proposed without any configuration adjustment or auxiliary switching devices. The mathematical analysis and experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. In an open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous machines drive with single dc voltage source, zero-sequence current (ZSC) can lead to a high current stress of power modules and loss of motor. Therefore, some modulation strategies have been employed to alleviate ZSC by suppressing zero-sequence voltage (ZSV). However, ZSC still exists in the system because ZSV can also be generated by other nonlinear factors of inverter such as the dead time of system. In addition, zero-sequence back electromotive force in the zero-sequence path can also enlarge torque ripple and ZSC. In order to deal with above problems, first, this paper proposes a full-order adaptive zero-sequence observer to estimate future ZSC and ZSV, which are able to compensate one-step control delay. Second, to achieve the maximum voltage dc bus utilization, this paper proposes a novel deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) scheme with alternate sub-hexagonal center pulsewidth modulation strategy to suppress ZSC and torque ripple simultaneously. Finally, this paper presents a comparative study of two types of methods, namely traditional DPCC scheme and the proposed DPCC scheme. In this paper, an overload and short-circuit protection method is proposed for voltage source inverter-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. In order to achieve high reliability and availability of the UPS, short circuit and overload protection scheme are necessary. When overload or short circuit happens, using the proposed control method, the amplitude of the output current can be limited to a constant value, which can be set by the customer to avoid the destruction of the power converter, and to obtain a faster recovery performance as well. The detailed principle of the proposed protection method is discussed in this paper. It mainly contains three parts in the control diagram for current limit, first is the anti-windup in the voltage and current controllers, then the feedforward of the capacitor voltage to the current control loop, the last is the fast reset of the resonant part of the current controller when overcurrent happens. This paper analyzes two fault-tolerant dual-multiphase motor drives, a series-connected topology, and a standard H-bridge topology. Previous studies have shown that the series connected topology is appropriate to an aerospace application and has lower peak current in degraded mode in comparison with the H-bridge topology, which may consequently diminish the system's weight and cost. This paper extends the study to compare different control strategies of these structures under two fault conditions: short-circuit of an inverter's switch and an open-phase of the machine. The control strategies analyzed in this paper do not impact the fundamental current or the torque generation, but the amplitudes of some harmonics in degraded mode are expected to be narrowed down in order to reduce the inverter's size. Some analyses of maximum voltage and peak current in degraded mode have been used for inverter dimensioning. This paper proposes a new methodology for automated design of power electronic systems realized through the use of artificial intelligence. Existing approaches do not consider the system's reliability as a performance metric or are limited to reliability evaluation for a certain fixed set of design parameters. The method proposed in this paper establishes a functional relationship between design parameters and reliability metrics, and uses them as the basis for optimal design. The first step in this new framework is to create a nonparametric surrogate model of the power converter that can quickly map the variables characterizing the operating conditions (e.g., ambient temperature and irradiation) and design parameters (e.g., switching frequency and dc link voltage) into variables characterizing the thermal stress of a converter (e.g., mean temperature and temperature variation of its devices). This step can be carried out by training a dedicated artificial neural network (ANN) either on experimental or simulation data. The resulting network is named as $\text{ANN}_{1}$ and can be deployed as an accurate surrogate converter model. This model can then be used to quickly map the yearly mission profile into a thermal stress profile of any selected device for a large set of design parameter values. The resulting data is then used to train $\text{ANN}_{2}$ , which becomes an overall system representation that explicitly maps the design parameters into a yearly lifetime consumption. To verify the proposed methodology, $\text{ANN}_{2}$ is deployed in conjunction with the standard converter design tools on an exemplary grid-connected PV converter case study. This study showed how to find the optimal balance between the reliability and output filter size in the system with respect to several design constraints. In order to improve the driving range and reduce the cost of battery electric vehicles through a higher efficiency, this paper proposes to adopt multilevel converters using low-voltage Si mosfets in the electric powertrains. A multilevel Si mosfet inverter, a conventional insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) inverter, and a SiC mosfet inverter are modeled and compared using a reference vehicle over various driving cycles. The costs of the three solutions are also compared. It is shown that the multilevel Si mosfet inverter has a rather high efficiency and realizes the lowest cost among the three solutions even when the worst case of cost is considered. Sensitivity analysis also shows that the multilevel Si mosfet inverter is suitable for a wide range of vehicle concepts in addition to the reference vehicle. Moreover, the multilevel topology also features lower electromagnetic interference and provides modularity. Therefore, Si mosfet-based multilevel inverters are proved in this paper to be an appropriate option to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of electric powertrains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial induction heating (IH) is a key manufacturing process due to its benefits in terms of efficiency, accurate output power control, and high performance. These features have made possible the extension of this technology to a wide range of industries from automotive to aeronautic, domestic, or renewable energies. One of the main challenges still present is the design of a high-performance and cost-effective process for those induction targets with complex geometries exposed to the magnetic field, being the most representative example gears present in most mechanical systems. Usually, in order to optimize the heating process, multifrequency IH systems are used, being often expensive and/or difficult to tune and control. The aim of this paper is, consequently, to propose a family of power converters able to supply the inductor system with two simultaneous frequencies in order to improve the heating process of the induction target. The proposed converter takes advantage of a multiresonant network allowing full control of the output power delivered at each frequency and, at the same time, a compact and cost-effective implementation. This paper proposes a high-efficiency single-phase T-type boundary conduction mode (BCM) microinverter. The conventional full-bridge BCM microinverter has achieved zero voltage switching (ZVS) and thereby improved the efficiency, but it suffers from high switching losses under light load conditions. The proposed T-type BCM microinverter reserves ZVS and uses a multilevel technique to further decrease the switching losses. The BCM operation with multilevel technique will have too low switching frequency when the grid voltage approaches half of the dc link voltage. To solve this problem, this paper adopts a third operation mode for the T-type switching leg to maintain the switching frequency above a minimum value. The corresponding mode transitions are also detailed to ensure a smooth operation. Because of the turn-offdelay of the freewheeling transistor, the actual lower current boundary deviates from the programmed one, which will distort output current. To address this issue, this paper also proposes a boundary compensation method. A prototype has been built for performance verification, which can test both full-bridge and T-type topology. This paper proposes a novel polygonal voltage space vector structure (SVS) having 30 sides, for a star-connected induction motor drive. The SVS eliminates the presence of harmonics up to 25th order from motor phase voltage throughout the entire modulation range, providing a torque profile devoid of lower order pulsations. Linear modulation is extended till 99.63% of base speed without exceeding the motor phase voltage rating. Topology consists of a dc-link fed primary inverter and two equal low voltage modular capacitor fed secondary inverters. Here the harmonics generated by the primary inverter is canceled by the secondary inverter which acts as a switched capacitive filter. In this paper, a dynamic model based on the sampled-data method is presented for a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The orders of the derived model are equal to the orders of a system. The modeling is different from the existing dynamic modeling for WPT systems, which almost double the model's order. Furthermore, the systematic analysis process is suitable for any WPT topologies and without the higher harmonics neglected and low-frequency approximation. Meanwhile, the state variables are allowed to vary up to twice the switching frequency, since the half-period symmetry property is exploited. In this paper, the series–series (SS) compensated WPT system is chosen as an example and the large-signal model and the steady-state operation point are determined. Wireless power transfer (WPT) via near-field magnetic coupling is an enabling technology for many applications. A few WPT standards are under development with frequencies ranging from kilohertz (kHz) to megahertz (MHz). Operation in kHz offers a higher power rating and that in MHz offers a smaller size. This paper presents a dual-band WPT architecture with novel transmitter and receiver topologies that can achieve high performance at both 100 kHz and 13.56 MHz with low component count and decoupled power delivery at different frequencies. On the transmitter side, we introduce an enhanced push–pull Class-E topology together with a reactance steering network (RSN), which can seamlessly compensate the load impedance variation for MHz wireless power transmitters. On the receiver side, we present a reconfigurable dual-band rectifier that can achieve a power density of 300 W/in $^3$ with low component count and low total harmonic distortion. A complete dual-band WPT system comprising an RSN-based dual-band transmitter and multiple reconfigurable receivers has been built and tested. The WPT system can simultaneously deliver a total of 30 W of power to multiple receivers (15 W maximum each) with 82.5% efficiency at 100 kHz and 74.8% efficiency at 13.56 MHz with 2.8 cm of coil distance and up to 5 cm of coil misalignment. Capacitor-current-feedback active damping has been widely used in LCL-type grid-connected inverters. However, the damping performance is deteriorated due to the negative equivalent resistance resulted by the digital control delays, and thus the grid-connected inverter is apt to be unstable under the grid impedance variation. To address this issue, this paper proposes the capacitor-current proportional-integral (PI) positive feedback active damping method that can ensure a positive equivalent resistance almost within the Nyquist frequency, i.e., the full controllable frequency range. In theory, the proposed damping method can be implemented by feeding back the capacitor current through a PI function. However, the integral term will continuously accumulate the noise and dc bias arising from the feedback signal. To overcome this drawback, a more practical implementation solution is drawn in this paper. Furthermore, a straightforward design procedure is presented for the convenience of selecting the proper controller parameters. With the proposed damping method and its practical implementation, high inverter robustness against the grid impedance variation can be achieved. This paper proposes a current control of dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) based on five-leg inverter. The five-leg inverter can be utilized to drive dual three-phase PMSM with full torque at slow speed when the conventional dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) has a faulty inverter leg. Usually, the common leg in the five-leg inverter may have severe current stress. By dedicated selection of which two phases as a pair to share the common leg, its current rating is approximately half of current rating of other legs. Meanwhile, the five-leg inverter can fully fulfill the vector space decomposition control for dual three-phase PMSM, which has the same dynamical performance as the conventional dual three-phase VSI. However, due to the asymmetry of five-leg inverter non-linearity, the currents of dual three-phase PMSM are unbalanced. To mitigate this issue, the five-leg inverter non-linearity compensation is also introduced and investigated in this paper, whose effectiveness is verified by comparative experiments on a prototype dual three-phase PMSM. In this paper, we design a voltage-modulated direct power control (VM-DPC) for a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) connected to a weak grid, where the phase-locked loop (PLL) system may make the system unstable if the conventional vector current control (VCC) method is applied. Compared with the conventional VCC method, the main advantage of the proposed VM-DPC method is that the PLL system is eliminated. Moreover, in order to inject the rated real power to the weak grid, the VSI system should generate some certain amount of reactive power as well. An eigenvalues-based analysis shows that the system with the proposed method tracks its desired dynamics in the certain operating range. This paper presents an adaptive multi-loop control scheme for inverters interlinking dc voltage sources to single-phase, low-voltage ac grids. Control self-adaptation is particularly useful in the case of weak grids that, due to frequent physical modifications (e.g., network reconfigurations and disconnection of generators/loads) and intrinsic lack of inertia, present strongly time-variant characteristics. The solution presented in this paper is based on a high-performance converter controller with auto-tuning capabilities. It is shown that the applied auto-tuning method can significantly widen the stability region of the interlinking converter, covering a broad range of grid impedance values. In addition, within the stable region, the controller maintains the nominal performance. Experimental results are reported validating the proposed approach in realistic operating conditions, including grid voltage distortion and variations of amplitude and frequency. In this paper, a current controller for a parallel operation of inverters is described. When inverters operate in parallel, it is a well-known fact that the inverter current is composed of the average current (AVC) and the zero-sequence circulating current (henceforth ZSCC), which inevitably flows between inverters under the parallel operation. Considering this, previous studies concentrated on reducing ZSCC. However, in this paper, it is found that the inverter current has another component, a differential current, in addition to the two components of AVC and ZSCC. Based on these three decomposed current components, three equivalent circuits are derived from n-paralleled inverters. To minimize the differential current and improve the regulation performance of the total output phase current, a decomposed current control scheme is proposed from equivalent circuit models. The proposed algorithm is applied to a system consisting of three paralleled two-level inverters with small shared inductance whose dc links are connected in common. Additionally, synchronous pulsewidth modulation is employed as the PWM method for each inverter. The proposed current controller is compared with two conventional current controllers, one where each inverter controls its own currents and the other where only AVC is controlled. Through experiments, it is shown that these conventional controllers have limitations and the proposed current controller overcomes these limitations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control scheme are verified through experimental results. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. This paper proposes a variable off-time control method for a single-phase microinverter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) for efficiency improvement. First, the fixed off-time control method is analyzed. The concept is to fix the off-time of the active switch throughout a line cycle for all output powers and scale the on-time of the active switch to shape a sinusoidal output current. Then, based on the fixed off-time control method, a variable off-time control method is proposed to modulate the preset fixed off-time in order to decrease the switching frequency during ac line zero-crossings and light load conditions. Compared with existed fixed-frequency DCM control or boundary conduction mode control, the variable off-time control is more flexible to optimize the efficiency under different load conditions as the switching frequency range can be automatically adjusted according to the output power. The switching frequency is high at heavy loads to limit the maximum peak current and is low at light loads to increase the light load efficiency. In addition, a predictive on-time method is adopted to simplify inverter control and reduce hardware costs. The parameter design principle is detailed in this paper. This paper provides an experimental and theoretical discussion on dynamic braking for a medium-voltage induction motor fed by a modular multilevel double-star chopper-cell (DSCC) inverter. It is intended to apply the motor drive to large-capacity fans and compressors with a large moment of inertia. Each chopper cell consists of a bidirectional chopper and a braking chopper connecting a single small-rated braking resistor in series with a single IGBT. This configuration results in a “distributed” dynamic brake that provides a distinctive welcomed side effect of protecting all the bidirectional-chopper cells against sudden overvoltage. An experimental system rated at 400 V and 15 kW is designed, constructed, and tested to verify operating performance of the distributed dynamic brake. Experimental waveforms, along with simulated waveforms, confirm firmly that the distributed dynamic brake is feasible and effective in an induction motor fed by a medium-voltage high-power DSCC inverter for fans and compressors. Finally, this paper gives a design example of a distributed dynamic-braking resistor for the 11-kV, 12-MW induction motor driving a large-capacity fan equipped with a large moment of inertia. A recent paper by M. Zaky & M. Metwaly (doi: 10.1109/TPEL.2016.2583660) proposed a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to mitigate the negative effects of motor parameter variation influence on indirect rotor field oriented control (IRFOC) without proposing a tuning method. However, neither rotor nor magnetizing inductances were investigated. Instead, the variation in stator resistance and load inertia—which have less effect on the orientation algorithm—is demonstrated. This correspondence introduces a typical system model with similar simulation platform and parameters. With identical tests, two errors to the original paper have been found. First, the reported speed which is in rev/min should be in rad/s. Second, the motor speed response to increasing inertia is opposite. A flyback converter that operates in the boundary conduction mode or discontinuous conduction mode has been widely used in microinverters. Placing two flyback converters in parallel and utilizing interleaving can extend the power range of microinverters. Interleaving phases between the two converters should be carefully regulated in order to reduce the switching current ripple. In this paper, two open-loop phase synchronization methods are put forward and compared for the interleaved flyback microinverters utilizing the master-slave control principle. The comparison result shows that stable phase regulation can be achieved if synchronization is triggered at the instant when the master converter's primary switch is turned OFF. However, the switching loss will be increased with the transformers' magnetizing inductances mismatch between the two interleaved converters. To solve this problem, a novel closed-loop interleaving phase synchronization control method is proposed in this paper to guarantee high efficiency and stable operation at the same time. Simulation platform together with a 200-W prototype have been built to verify the proposed control methods. These results demonstrate that the proposed closed-loop interleaving phase synchronization control method can achieve high efficiency while maintaining stable phase synchronization for the interleaved flyback microinverter. A robust field-weakening method for direct-torque-controlled (DTC) synchronous reluctance motors is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm achieves smooth transition between the constant torque and field-weakening regions. Maximum torque per ampere is utilized below base speed, while both the current and voltage limits of the drive system are satisfied in the field-weakening region. The proposed method is robust to the variations in the machine dq -axis inductances. This ensures the system stability during field-weakening operation, especially along the maximum torque per flux trajectory. The proposed algorithm is incorporated into the duty ratio regulation-based DTC to achieve high-performance torque and flux control in the field-weakening region. To reduce the computation burden and eliminate the weighting factor in conventional speed prediction control, a direct voltage-vector selection-based model-predictive direct-speed control (MP-DSC) method is proposed in this paper. An extended sliding-mode load–torque observer is designed to observe the motor speed and the load torque, which improves the robustness of the system and reduces the influence of measurement noise. Then, the reference voltage vector that includes the system speed and current information is predicted based on the deadbeat control principle. This reference voltage vector is used to construct a cost function, which only includes the error between the reference voltage vector and the candidate voltage vector. Thus, the weighting factor in conventional MP-DSC method is avoided in the proposed method. In addition, a voltage-vector selection method is developed to quickly determine candidate voltage vectors and to ensure the current does not exceed current limit. In modern power systems, the increasing penetration of renewables and power electronics, particularly inverter-based wind and solar power generation, is altering power system dynamics and bringing new stability concerns. One challenging issue that is attracting considerable attention is the wide range of power oscillations associated with multiple parallel grid-connected inverters. In such systems, the characteristics in terms of resonance and oscillation are significantly different from single-inverter systems. This paper investigates the mutual interaction and stability issues of multiple grid-interfacing inverters with LCL-filters in power-electronics-based power systems under various grid conditions. The investigation reveals that such interactions between power inverters and the grid may excite multiple resonances at various frequencies under certain grid conditions. The nodal admittance matrix concept, which was originally from power systems engineering, is adopted here. Moreover, this paper further develops an Interaction-Admittance model that can effectively describe these mutual interactions in terms of a physical network admittance. We apply our model to various scenarios such as stiff grid conditions and inductive grids with/without power factor correction capacitors. The results with the proposed framework demonstrate an intuitive interpretation of multi-inverter system resonance and instabilities. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. The instantaneous output power of the two-stage single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter pulsates at twice the line frequency ($2f_{{\text{o}}}$), generating second harmonic current (SHC) in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, which will affect the maximum power point tracking operation and deteriorate the overall conversion efficiency. The generating mechanism of the SHC is analyzed in this paper and it is pointed that in order to eliminate the SHC in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, the voltage loop gain of the front-end dc–dc converter should be high enough at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$. Since there is a −180° phase abrupt at the resonant frequency of the input side filter capacitor and the inductor, the system may be unstable. To cope with this problem, the inductor current feedback active-damping scheme (ADS) is adopted. For further improving the loop gain at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$ , proportional–integral–resonant regulator with ADS (PIR + ADS) is proposed in this paper. Besides, a step-by-step closed-loop parameters design method is presented. Finally, a 3-kW two-stage single-phase grid-connected PV inverter has been fabricated and tested, and the experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed control schemes. This paper proposes a new single-current-sensor (SCS) control method for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). In this method, the sum of two branch currents in the inverter is sampled by an SCS twice for one control period, under actions of two different shoot-through voltage vectors. Then, the three-phase currents of the motor can be reconstructed by these two sample values and can be later used for the current closed-loop control of the PMSM. In this paper, the feasibility of the SCS control method is analyzed thoroughly and a corresponding modulation strategy is given for the qZSI. Compared with the traditional SCS control methods, the new method fully eliminates the measurement dead-zone problem without any additional compensation strategy. The operation range of the PMSM extends and utilization rate of the input voltage improves. This paper proposes a novel method to determine and control active and reactive power output of the virtual ocillator control-based inverter in grid-connected mode. An analytical expression is introduced to describe the quasi-steady-state relationship between the parameters of the inverter including its controllers, and the power injection and voltage at the inverter terminals. We introduce a new, complex valued parameter (K) to the conventional virtual oscillator control (VOC) scheme in order to control the inverter output power. We compare analytic and numeric solutions of the above analytical expression with time-domain simulation results, using different K values and line impedances to validate the analytical expression. In the second part of the paper, we design a controller: we use the above expression to derive K for given reference powers and use adaptive integrators to compensate for the remaining errors. We compare this control scheme to a method that uses PI controllers, and also to a simple decoupling method for independent control of active and reactive power. The controller based on the analytical method exhibits very good dynamic and decoupling performance. In this paper, a generalized droop control (GDC) is proposed for a grid-supporting inverter based on a comparison between traditional droop control and virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. Both the traditional droop control and VSG control have their own advantages, but neither traditional droop control nor VSG control can meet the demand for different dynamic characteristics in grid-connected (GC) and stand-alone (SA) modes at the same time. Rather than using a proportional controller with a low-pass filter, as in a traditional droop control, or fully mimicking the conventional synchronous generator parameters in a VSG control, the active power control loop of the GDC can be designed flexibly to adapt to different requirements. With a well-designed controller, the GDC can achieve satisfactory control performance; unlike a traditional droop control, it can provide virtual inertia and damping properties in SA mode; unlike a VSG control, the output active power of an inverter with GDC can follow changing references quickly and accurately, without large overshoot or oscillation in the GC mode. Moreover, given specific controller parameters, the GDC can function as both a traditional droop control and a VSG control. The GDC's controller parameter design is more intuitive and flexible, and this paper provides a distinct design process. A new controller for a grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter is proposed in this paper. The system is described by its complex representation, and the controller is designed using the complex root locus method. The complex representation allows a considerable reduction in the order of the system, simplifying the design task and making it possible to use advanced techniques, such as the complex root locus. The new complex controller adds an extra degree of freedom that makes it possible to move the poles of the systems and to improve the stability and speed of response compared with the conventional controls. This paper analyzes the influence of phase-locked loop (PLL) on the stability of LCL-type single-phase grid-connected asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) with synchronous reference frame proportional-integral (SRF-PI) grid current control under weak grid scenarios. The ACHMI system is composed of power stage circuit and control system, where the control system contains the dual-loop current control strategy established in the hybrid reference frame, the SRF-PLL, and the hybrid modulation method employed to synthesize the multilevel output voltage. The small-signal model of the whole ACHMI system is first established by using a simple step-by-step derivation method, and then, the small-signal analysis method is adopted to linearize the ACHMI, which is then utilized to derive the impedance model of the ACHMI system. Furthermore, an improved impedance stability criterion is derived, which is then employed to analyze the system stability. By using this criterion, the stability of the ACHMI can be evaluated with the variation of the bandwidth of PLL, the output power factor angle of the ACHMI, and the amplitude of the grid current reference signal under weak grid conditions. In this paper, a systematic design procedure for the optimal selection of the PI controller of the PLL is presented, which guarantees the steady-state performance and dynamic response of the ACHMI system. With this design method, the dual-loop current control and PLL can be taken into account simultaneously when analyzing the stability margin of the ACHMI. Enhancement of dc bus voltage utilization for a five-level inverter with single dc source and capacitor-fed H-bridge (CHB) units is investigated in this paper. A carrier-based modulation technique is used for boosting the dc bus utilization, which is established by providing detailed mathematical analysis. The five-level inverter used here is realized by cascading a CHB unit to each phase of a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The increase in dc bus voltage utilization owes to the pole voltage redundancies offered by CHB units. The floating capacitors of H-bridge units are balanced within a quarter fundamental cycle using the switching state redundancies of pole voltage levels. The aforementioned modulation technique allows the inverter to enhance the dc bus utilization from 0.577 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ to 0.63 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ under unity power factor. This enhancement is obtained in the linear modulation range without increasing the dc bus voltage, and thus, the inverter can operate without the presence of low-order harmonics in its phase voltages. The strength of this paper lies in its detailed mathematical analysis for finding out the limiting modulation index and power factor condition in the light of floating capacitor voltage balancing issue. Simulation as well as experimental verification of the modulation scheme is carried out on an induction motor drive under various operating conditions. This paper presents a novel single-stage soft-switched high-frequency-link three-phase dc–ac converter topology. The topology supports unidirectional dc to ac power flow and is targeted for applications like grid integration of photovoltaic sources, fuel cell, etc. The high frequency magnetic isolation results in reduction of system volume, weight, and cost. Sine-wave pulsewidth modulation is implemented in dc-side converter. Though high-frequency switched, dc-side converter is soft switched for most part of the line cycle. The ac-side converter active switches are line frequency switched incurring negligible switching loss. The line frequency switching of ac-side converter facilitates use of high voltage blocking inherently slow semiconductor devices to generate high voltage ac output. In addition, a cascaded multilevel structure is presented in this paper for direct medium-voltage ac grid integration. A detailed circuit analysis considering nonidealities like transformer leakage and switch capacitances, is presented in this paper. A 6-kW three-phase laboratory prototype is built. This paper proposes a split-capacitor four-wire current source inverter, which is the dual of the split-capacitor four-wire voltage source inverter. Since the midpoint of the dc link is tied to the neutral point of ac filter capacitors, the common-mode voltage (CMV) is reduced significantly. Consequently, the leakage current issue is effectively addressed. The proposed circuit is cost-effective as no extra switch is added. This paper, first, establishes the equivalent common-mode circuit of the proposed inverter. The impact of the neutral line inductance on CMV is also analyzed. Then, a specific modulation is introduced to balance the dc-link voltages/currents. To achieve good input/output performance, a nonlinear control method is developed based on time-domain models. This paper proposes a new high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) converter for grid connection through a high-leg delta transformer. The converter is composed of a symmetrically connected boost converter and three half-bridge inverters. One of the three half-bridge inverters is connected to the boost converter, and the others are directly connected to the PV terminals. As a result, this circuit configuration enables to reduce the power losses in both boost converter and inverters. This paper also proposes a new cooperative control method between the symmetrically connected boost converter and inverter. The control method can reduce the average switching frequency to 75% of that in a conventional one, resulting in a great reduction in the switching power loss. Experimental results confirm that the proposed circuit configuration makes it possible to improve its European efficiency from 91.6% to 94.5%. Magnetically coupled resonant (MCR) wireless power transfer (WPT) is one of the most promising WPT technologies for its remarkable capability of simultaneous noncontact power transfer for multiple independent loads. Nevertheless, diverse energy requirements of different loads and efficiency quota make it difficult to design and optimize the multiload system. In this paper, a novel driver configuration for the MCR WPT system with multiple loads is proposed, in which the transmitting resonant tank is driven synchronously by multiple inverters operating at multiple switching frequency and sharing a common dc voltage source, then a multifrequency superposition methodology is presented to achieve high efficiency and targeted power distribution. The dominant features of the methodology are listed as follows: 1) the multifrequency power components from multiple inverters can be simultaneously delivered to multiple loads through a single transmitter; 2) the receiving coils are elaborately designed at different resonant frequencies that correspond to the operating frequencies of multiple inverters to achieve targeted power transfer and high efficiency; 3) the resonant frequency of the transmitter can be modulated within the adjacent area of multiple operating frequencies, and the power distribution to meet the requirements of selective loads will be realized; and 4) the resonant frequencies of receivers can also be adjusted to effectively realize the power distribution. In this paper, a double-frequency MCR WPT system with two loads is comprehensively investigated as a representative example, and the studied methodology has been experimentally verified by two prototypes of the proposed circuit configurations. This paper proposes a new fault-tolerant strategy to revamp performance of three-phase multilevel converters with a single faulty switch. The proposed fault-tolerant strategy is based on the application of a modified selective harmonic elimination (SHE) technique in conjunction with the fundamental phase-shift compensation method. The proposed fault-tolerant strategy makes the most use of the converter capacity in the faulty condition, generates balanced line voltages, and eliminates a wide range of lower order harmonics to limit the total harmonic distribution of the converter voltages in the faulty condition. This paper provides a theoretical discussion and comparison in energy balancing between a modular multilevel cascade inverter based on single-star bridge cells (SSBC) and that on single-delta bridge cells (SDBC). Attention is paid to applications involving asymmetric active-power generation in utility-scale grid-tied photovoltaic systems. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluation metrics to assess the energy-balancing capability are introduced and applied to both SSBC and SDBC inverters. As for the SSBC inverter, six zero-sequence voltage waveforms with different harmonic content enabling enhanced energy-balancing capability are analyzed and compared regarding their effectiveness. Paralleling is the development tendency of the auxiliary inverter. This paper analyzes the problems of the parallel process in detail. First, for inherent contraction between voltage regulation performance and current sharing performance, the paper adopts the resistive droop method. Second, the paper improves dynamic performance and reliability of the droop method by improving power calculation and introducing the whole cycle adaptive droop method. Third, in order to solve the unshared current problem caused by inconsistent parameters, the paper increases active power proportion droop coefficient, and introduces voltage compensation strategy to compensate voltage drop caused by increased proportion droop coefficient. With increasingly prominent role of rail transit in the entire urban transport system, an auxiliary inverter is used increasingly. The complicated and fluctuating load condition of the auxiliary inverter implies special designs about structure and control strategy are necessary. Multilevel inverters have created a new wave of interest in industry and research. While the classical topologies have proved to be a viable alternative in a wide range of high-power medium-voltage applications, there has been an active interest in the evolution of newer topologies. Reduction in overall part count as compared to the classical topologies has been an important objective in the recently introduced topologies. In this paper, some of the recently proposed multilevel inverter topologies with reduced power switch count are reviewed and analyzed. The paper will serve as an introduction and an update to these topologies, both in terms of the qualitative and quantitative parameters. Also, it takes into account the challenges which arise when an attempt is made to reduce the device count.
