The article presents German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt's critique of cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith's 1810 New Map of Mexico by Aaron Arrowsmith and examines the critique. Topics of the critique include von Humbolt's experience of compiling a map of Mexico, Arrowsmith's copying of his work, and the changes that Arrowsmith have made on his map. It notes that the critique reflects the development of an attitude towards cartography that is scientific.

Matthäus Merian, a native of Basel, arrived in Paris in 1610 soon after the assassination of Henri IV, when the new king, Louis XIII, was only nine years old. At that time France was exhausted by war and famine, divided between Protestants and Catholics and struggling to recover. The regent, Marie de Médicis, soon to be confronted by public discontent, was urgently trying to consolidate the fragile Bourbon dynasty by rekindling the universal veneration of the late king for the benefit of the young monarch. Merian's plan of Paris was created with a similar objective. Rejecting the bird's-eye style of existing plans, he based his work on the rules of perspective as outlined in Jean Cousin's Livre de perspective (1560). The symbolic message conveyed through Merian's arrangement of the map's decorative elements was supported by the main axes of perspective in the city plan. Merian's map was copied on numerous occasions, but the updated decorations lost their natural link with the map. The copies reflect the shift from the concept of royalty incarnated within the king's person towards a more abstract notion of monarchy that refers to the state apparatus of government. The article highlights the 21st International Conference on the History of Cartography in Budapest, Hungary on July 17-22, 2005. About 250 participants met on the city on the Danube. The theme of the conference, "Changing Borders," was particularly appropriate in view of border shifts that have affected Europe over the countries.

The article concentrates on history of Cartography in the twentieth century. The implementation of road numbering during the 1910s and 1920s, for instance, allowed Americans to gain an integrated conception of their landscape as criss-crossed by a rational grid that encouraged automobile travel, and between 1916 and 1929 inter-city passenger miles leapt from 42 billion miles to 2 trillion. The relationship between cartography and the ideals of government has yet to receive much treatment in the history of cartography.

Although antiquarians, historians of cartography, palaeographers and art historians have written about the Hereford mappa mundi for more than three hundred years, we know little about its original placement or use. This paper relies on new masonry and dendrochronological evidence and the system of medieval ecclesiastical preferments to argue that this monumental world map was originally exhibited in 1287 next to the first shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe in Hereford Cathedral's north transept. It did not function as an altarpiece, therefore, but as part of what I call the Cantilupe pilgrimage complex, a conglomeration of items and images which was for a time one of England's most popular pilgrimage destinations. In this location, the map would have added to the complex's attractive power and served as a multi-media pedagogical tool. The eclipse of the city view by the geometric plan around 1700 is a well-documented phenomenon that traditionally has been explained by recourse to a meta-historical narrative about the progressive triumph of science over art. In actuality, throughout the early modern period the modes of representation available to the cartographer ranged from the geometric to the pictorial, and their employment was predicated on concerns that were more cultural and political than scientific. To show how these concerns contributed to the dramatic shift in the representation of cities which occurred at the outset of the eighteenth century, the content of the languages employed in the most famous early modern view (1627) and the plan of Naples (1775) is analyzed and the ways in which their respective strategies of representation explicitly sought to accommodate or challenge the political status quo are exposed. Le remplacement de la vue de ville par le plan géométrique vers 1700 est un phénomène bien documenté que l'on explique traditionnellement en recourant à un récit méta-historique sur le triomphe progressif de la science sur l'art. Throughout most of the sixteenth century, and despite objections from experienced navigators, cosmographers in Spain had been trying to introduce new methods of celestial navigation in an attempt to change navigation from a craft to an applied science. At the end of the century, a Portuguese-educated cosmographer, Andrés García de Céspedes, approached the issue of navigational techniques from a different perspective. He argued that charts should be adapted to the navigation methods preferred by pilots and that their reports could still provide reliable data about the location of places, so long as both reports and charts were properly interpreted. Driven more by the desire to validate Spanish territorial claims overseas than by navigational reform, he published a book explaining and justifying the charts used by the pilots and convinced a committee of expert cosmographers to approve the charts. In this paper, I show how the arguments chosen by García de Céspedes indicate the importance of boundaries and coordinate location to discussions of navigational methods and nautical cartography, even as Spanish cosmographers continued to debate the role of theoretical knowledge in the practice of navigation and cartography. Al final del siglo, el cosmógrafo portugués Andrés García de Céspedes, enfocó la cuestión de las técnicas de navegación desde una perspectiva diferente. Henricus Martellus's four world maps of c .1489 show a non-existent Asian peninsula east of the Aurea Chersonesus (the Malay peninsula). For some decades a group of scholars in Latin America has been claiming that this so-called 'Dragon's Tail' peninsula is really a pre-Columbian map of South America. In this paper, the cartographical and place-name evidence is examined, showing that the identification has not been proved, and that perceived similarities between the river and coastal outlines on this 'Dragon's Tail' peninsula and those of South America are fortuitous. Ptolemy's depiction of an enclosed Indian Ocean was invalidated when Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Consequently, a year or two later, Martellus adapted the east Asian section of Ptolemy's world map, providing China with an east coast and turning the southward extension of Asia into a peninsula. The non-Ptolemaic place-names on these maps were derived from Marco Polo's writings. Les quatre cartes du monde d'Henricus Martellus datées d'environ 1489 montrent une péninsule asiatique, qui n'existe pas, à l'Est de l' Aurea Chersonesus (péninsule de la Malaisie). Depuis quelques décennies un groupe de chercheurs d'Amérique latine a affirmé que cette péninsule dite en 'queue de dragon' était en réalité une carte précolombienne de l'Amérique du Sud. Dans cet article, le matériel cartographique et toponymique est passé au crible de la critique, montrant que l'identification n'a pas été prouvée et que les similitudes entre les tracés des rivières et des côtes figurées sur la péninsule en 'queue de dragon' et ceux d'Amérique du Sud sont fortuites. In diesem Beitrag führen kritische Untersuchungen der kartographischen Darstellung und des Namensgutes zu dem Ergebnis, dass eine derartige Zuordnung nicht bewiesen werden kann, und die erkennbaren Ähnlichkeiten bei Flüssen und Küstenabschnitten des "Drachenschwanzes" mit denen von Südamerika zufälliger Natur sind. Die Ptolemäische Darstellung des Indischen Ozeans als Binnenmeer war durch die Fahrt des Bartolomeu Dias um das Kap der Guten Hoffnung als falsch erkannt worden. Dementsprechend adaptierte Martellus die ostasiatischen Teile von Ptolemäus Weltkarte ein oder zwei Jahre später, indem er eine chinesische Ostküste einzeichnete deren südliche Fortsetzung er als Halbinsel ausbildete. Although the close association of word and image in medieval cartography is widely acknowledged, the significance of the relationship after the rediscovery of Ptolemy's Geography and throughout the Renaissance has been overlooked, despite Abraham Ortelius's choice of the term 'Reader' for users of the Theatrum orbis terrarum (1570). In this paper, the map of the world, which (as in Ptolemy's Geography ) opens Ortelius's Theatrum , is analysed to show how Ortelius's concept of space was very different from Ptolemy's. Attention is drawn to the content of the texts on the map, to Ortelius's notion of geography as the eye of history, and to the importance in the Renaissance of the emblem as a conceit, or device, in the system of acquisition and transmission of knowledge. As in emblems, the words on Ortelius's map are not there to explain or to comment on what is seen but to give the image meaning; the purpose of the map is to invite contemplation of God's world. The map is contradictory, however; for Ortelius's accurate and up-to-date presentation of the physical world is qualified by a verbal statement that the world is 'nothing', a mere pinpoint in the immensity of the universe. It is concluded that Ortelius was not a geographer in the same way Ptolemy was, and that Ortelius was using geography as a philosopher and his world map as an illustration of his moral and religious thinking. Daraus läßt sich schließen, dass Ortelius, trotz seiner Position als königlicher Geograph und obwohl er die erste neuzeitliche Zusammenstellung von Karten im modernen Sinne verwirklichte, nicht in der selben Weise Geograph war wie Ptolemäus. Vielmehr betrachtete er die Geographie vom Standpunkt des Philosophen aus und spiegelte in der Weltkarte seine moralischen und religiüsen Vorstellungen. Aunque la asociación entre palabra e imagen en la cartografía medieval está ampliamente reconocida, el significado de esta relación después del redescubrimiento de la Geographia de Ptolomeo al principio del siglo XV, ha sido pasado por alto, a pesar de que Abraham Ortelius utilizó el término 'lector' para designar a los usuarios del Theatrum orbis terrarum (1570). En este artículo, el mapa del mundo que (como en la Geograhia de Ptolomeo) abre su Theatrum y resume el contenido e importancia de la obra, es analizado para mostrar cómo el concepto de espacio visual de Ortelius y las palabras asociadas a él--las del verso del mapa, las del mapa en si, y las que lo rodean--eran muy diferentes al de Ptolomeo. The final volume of the Polyglot Bible, edited by Benito Arias Montano and printed in Antwerp by Christophe Plantin, was published in 1571-1572. Forming part of the Bible's Apparatus , the volume contains a number of essays, illustrations and maps by Montano relating to questions raised by the biblical text. Montano's maps were a product of his philological training in Oriental languages and exegesis, his profound interest in antiquarianism and geography and his practice of visualizing and tabulating knowledge. He designed his maps both as study aids and as devotional-meditative devices. Moreover, the maps reflect his wider philosophical outlook, according to which Holy Scripture contains the foundations of all natural philosophy. Montano's case encourages us to re-examine early modern Geographia sacra in the light of the broader scholarly trends of the period. Le dernier volume de la Bible polyglotte éditée par Benito Arias Montano et imprimée à Anvers par Christophe Plantin a été publié en 1571-1572. Formant une partie de l' Apparatus de la Bible, le volume contient un certain nombre d'essais, d'illustrations et de cartes conçus par Montano en relation avec des questions soulevées par le texte biblique. Les cartes de Montano sont le fruit de sa formation philologique dans les langues orientales et dans l'exégèse, de son profond intérêt pour les antiquités et la géographie et de son habitude de mettre en images ou en tableaux les connaissances. Il concevait ses cartes à la fois comme des aides à l'étude et comme des supports de dévotion et de méditation. En outre, ces cartes reflètent une conception philosophique plus large, selon laquelle les Saintes Ecritures recèlent les fondements de toute philosophie naturelle. Montanos Karten waren ein Produkt seiner philologischen Ausbildung in orientalischen Sprachen und in Bibelauslegung, seinen tiefgehenden Interessen auf dem Gebiet der Altertumskunde und Geographie sowie seinen Erfahrungen in der Visualisierung und tabellarischen Darstellung von Wissen. Er konzipierte seine Karten sowohl als Hilfsmittel für das Studium als auch für religiöse Meditation. El último volumen de la Biblia Políglota, editada por Benito Arias Montano e impresa en Amberes por Christophe Plantin, fue publicado en 1571-1572. Este volumen, que formaba parte del Apparatus de la Biblia, contiene varios ensayos, ilustraciones y mapas hechos por Montano, sobre cuestiones planteadas por el texto bíblico. Los mapas de Montano fueron un producto de su educación filológica en lenguas orientales y en exégesis, su profundo interés por la geografía y lo antigua, y de su costumbre de representar imágenes y organizar conocimientos. El erudito español dibujó sus mapas como ayuda para el estudio de la Biblia y como instrumentos de devoción y meditación. Sus mapas reflejan, además, su amplia perspectiva filosófica según los fundamentos de filosofía natural de la Sagrada Escritura.
