Abstract

Ti carbide layers are synthesized by multipulse excimer laser (lambda = 308 nanometers) irradiation of Ti samples in ambient CH4 gas at superatmospheric pressure. Nonstoichiometric carbides with low carbon content are observed by the bulk of the samples. The laser fluence/number of pulses' combination is optimum. Large perturbation of the sample's surface is observed by an increase in the number of applied pulses. A model is proposed to explain the properties of the laser.

Abstract

Highly pure and hard face centered cubic (fcc) TiN films, deposited on cold silicon wafers, promotes Ti target ablation, which occurs under multipulse excimer laser irradiation in a low pressure atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The ablation of Ti targets does not require any thermal treatment. An increase in the surrounding temperature causes a degradation of the crystallinity of the TiN films, although the films are stoichiometric.

Abstract

The effect of Ti indiffusion into a LiNbO3 substrate during multipulse free-running ruby laser irradiation was investigated. The results showed that multipulse free-running ruby laser irradiation of the LiNbO3 samples resulted in efficient Ti indiffusion with minimum perturbation. The implanted zones exhibited characteristics which are applicable for the formation of optical devices.
