This article profiles Truman K. Gibson, a top official of the International Boxing Club, who died on December 23, 2005, in Chicago, Illinois. Black soldiers during World War II remember Gibson as a man who traveled widely, using his position as a high level adviser from the War Department to defend them. Whether working on the ramparts in the fight against discrimination in the U.S. military or moving quietly behind the scenes as a member of U.S. President Harry Truman's "Black Cabinet," Gibson was a formidable force. He was among several unsung heroes in the developing civil rights movement that began its upsurge in the mid-forties.

Malcolm X, a follower of Elijah Muhammad decided to quit and found the Muslim Mosque Inc., reasons for which seem to be varied. Malcolm was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. At least some conspirators were members of the NOI and there's speculation that Louis Farrakhan, who was adopted as Elijah's successor after Malcolm left the NOI, had a hand in the murder.

Civil Rights Act was a turning point in the decades-long struggle against segregation and discrimination. When U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the legislation into law on July 2, 1964, America took one step closer to becoming a country which truly judges not by the color of skin but by the content of character. However, the Civil Rights Act was not something that simply happened, nor was it something that happened simply. It was one step in a long and difficult Civil Rights Movement, one stained with the blood and built upon the sweat of those Americans whose dedication to liberty and equality was stronger than that to their own self-preservation. The article presents information on the March for Women's Lives, a protest march organized on April 27, 2004 in Washington D.C. by a coalition of activist organizations, to protest the U.S. government's persistent effort to chip away at women's reproductive and health rights. February 21, will mark the 39th year since El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz popularly known as Malcolm X was gunned down at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City. He used to talk about the honor of being a mother and how the key to the future and the key to humanity, actually, was through the woman. A panel of women will discuss his legacy, and especially his transformation from an abuser of women to a strong and devoted family man. Aisha Al-Adawiya of the Schomburg Center and the Malcolm X Museum is the moderator. Veteran activist Yuri Kochiyama, who tried to aid the fallen Malcolm at the Audubon Ballroom and is presently living in California, will appear via videotape in an interview with Sam Anderson.

Students at Gregorio Luperon High School for Science and Math in Washington Heights, New York City have received a boost from the borough president of Manhattan C. Virginia Fields in their plight to ease the over-crowded situation at the school, as of December 25, 2003. They were joined recently by Fields as they delivered thousands of signed petitions to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein urging him and Mayor Bloomberg give them a new site for their school. Fields said that the signatures on the petitions were indicative of how strongly the students, their parents and the community feel about the need for a new location for the school.

The social and political paradigms within which these major reactions to America, then considered cataclysmic responses, were the signatures of a people who, at that time, believed that America could change. In a sense, these people believed more in America than America believed in herself. Thus, some people believe, it will once again require the potent voices from urban and rural Black America to rekindle the fire. Black folks, the civil rights bill notwithstanding, did not then, and have not now, as a collective community, participated in the greening of America.

In 1882, workers in New York City celebrated the very first Labor Day. It was a day to honor working men and women and to recognize the contributions that the labor movement has made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. The attacks on workers are coming all over the country on Verizon workers, on autoworkers at the Big Three in Detroit and on public sector workers here in New York City.
