An introduction is presented to the issue, which draws heavily from papers read at a 1979 conference held in Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Hull University in England.

Through the death in December 1969 of Lord Simey, Charles Booth Professor of Social Science in the University of Liverpool, the Board of Management of the Sociological Review has lost one of its most valued and distinguished members. The members of the Board wish to record their deepest regret at his death and their appreciation of his services as a colleague over so long a period.

The article focuses on the book entitled "The Sociological Imagination," by C. Wright Mills. It is a great advantage to have this stimulating and provocative book in paperback at last. Wright Mills hits out with splendid impartiality at both grand theorists and abstract empiricists. And those who see the main aim of sociology to lie in finding solutions to practical problems might ponder his comment that this means accepting the framework of his society that the sociologist cannot help but be committed in one way or another.

The article focuses on the book entitled "Towards a Sociology of Management," by Geoffrey Vickers. Despite its title, this collection of articles and talks contributes very little to the sociological study of management. Most of the material has been published previously, though not in sociological journals, and is a distillation of the personal views and judgments of Sir Geoffrey Vickers on such varied topics as organizational control, automation, incentives, and mental health in industry. The author shows little awareness of the considerable sociological literature on these topics and his personal views, however sincere and intelligent, are no substitute for professionally disciplined sociological inquiry.

This book includes some distinguished contributions, however, and is a more international collection, including French, Italian Dutch and British work, as well as the inevitable larger group of Americans.

Professor Cotgrove's new book is theoretically more sophisticated, and therefore more worthwhile for the modern course in sociology. It covers all the main areas of specialized study and a vast literature in a way, which would stimulate into further reading any student with a trace of intellectual curiosity.

The article focuses on the book "Dutch Society," by J. Goudsblom. This paperback is a good though not complete introduction to the Netherlands seen from a sociological perspective. It should serve well at the undergraduate level. The book is descriptive rather than theoretical; it focuses on some specific features of Dutch society rather than on general features of all societies. In particular those sections, which deal with the phenomenon of "verzuiling" are worth reading. "Verzuiling" can be translated as pillarisation, the idea of which is that the various blocs of the Dutch population are represented by pillars, which are based on religious and socio-economic differences. The author is able to point out that this phenomenon more or less monopolizes all expressions of organized conflict in Dutch Society. The book is well written and could provide a basis for further reading if so desired.

The article focuses on the book "Societies: Evolutionary and Comparative Perspectives," by Talcott Parsons. Readers who may hope that this will provide them with a simplified approach to the work of Parsons will be disappointed; his style is as turgid as ever, making this a doubtful member of a series of books for beginners. Nevertheless it is a shorter route to Parsonian ideas than most, and is much more rooted in empirical data than his other books. The societies under examination do not include those of modern Europe, which will be dealt with in a later volume.

The article focuses on "An Introduction to Sociology," by Bryan R. Green and Edward A. Johns. Although this book is very short and elementary, it does not therefore content itself with description, but tackles in an introductory way most of the core problems of sociological analysis. Thus there is quite a useful chapter on functionalism, and some of the main criticisms raised against it. There is also a bibliography, but this, for an introductory book, is far too brief. Greatly to be recommended to those contemplating or about to enter on a course in sociology, as giving them some idea of what the discipline is really about.

The article presents information on the book "The Ecological Perspective on Human Affairs," by Harold and Margaret Sprout. The book is extremely expensive and since its subject lies in an unfashionable and possibly marginal field of sociology, it may not receive the attention it deserves. The authors examine with considerable rigor various aspects of the ecological perspective, with particular reference to environmental determinism and later more refined forms of environmentalism.

It is organized around the central themes of social interaction and culture. The book is clearly written and well organized and has useful short bibliographies.

The article presents information on the book "Readings on Modern Sociology," edited by Alex Inkeles. The book is intended to accompany Professor Inkeles' highly successful "What is Sociology." It is a rather disappointing collection of papers, although one sympathizes with the author's difficulty in attempting to cover such a wide field.

The book gives a short account of some of the more commonly used techniques by social scientists. The ground covered is well trodden but it is welcome to find an author who stresses basic ideas rather than details of computation.

The article presents information on the book "A Dictionary of the Social Sciences," edited by Julius Gould and William L. Kolb. The definitions in the dictionary cover, with some minor exceptions, the fields of sociology, politics, social anthropology, social psychology and economics. Each entry gives one or more definitions and includes appropriate specific references to the literature. The dictionary should be on the shelf of every professional social scientist and available to students at university and college level.

The article presents information on the book "Racial and Cultural Minorities," by G.E. Simpson and J.M. Yinger. This is the third edition of a comprehensive and painstaking study of minorities. The great credit of the writers is not only that they treated their subject without favour to any special theory but that they have scrupulously applied a balanced sociological approach to its issues. The book could have been a good deal shorter but for the repetitions which were no doubt caused by the writers' sustained scrupulousness to recite all the arguments every time they seemed at all pertinent.

The article presents information on the book "On Theory and Verification in Sociology," by Hans L. Zetterberg. Zetterberg doesn't mind taxonomical exercises but in this book he is bent on pursuing more systematically organised lawlike propositions. The result of the abstractions which follow is not altogether surprising. The abstractions of sociological theory do not make exciting reading and, to use a phrase of the writer's, contemporary sociological theory is hardly "information packed."

This book is a collection of carefully written papers on economics, sociology, general and social psychology, politics and social administration, together with suggested reading and a note on degree and other courses in the social sciences. It should be required reading for careers masters in grammar schools.

The article presents information on the book "Social Change, Source, Patterns, and Consequences," edited by Amitai Etzioni and Eva Etzioni. This book is a useful selection of the classical and modern theories of social change beginning with well-known passages from philosophers like Herbert Spencer, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Max Weber, etc. Many of the contributions are familiar ones and easily accessible. In general this is a carefully selected collection which should prove extremely useful for teaching purposes. There are brief editorial introductions to each section which are worth reading as substantive contributions.

Smelser's selection is a particularly useful one, covering such suspects as political aspects of economic activity, production, exchange and consumption processes, stratification and economic life etc.

The book is a valuable selection of essays by Wirth, drawn from his work on social organization, particularly his well known studies of Jews and the Ghetto, on the sociology of knowledge, on community studies and in the applied field of social problems and planning.

The article focuses on the book "Education, Economy, and Society: A Reader in the Sociology of Education," by A.H. Halsey, Jean Floud and C. Arnold Anderson. This volume is a collection of 41 previously published papers by sociologists, economists and policy makers, concerning the relation of education in modern society to the economy and class structure. The papers are divided into six sections, The Consequence of Economic Change: Education, Social Mobility, and the Labour Market, The Selection Process in Education, Social Factors in Educational Achievement, The Changing Social Functions of Schools and Universities, and Teachers in Schools and Universities.

The article focuses on the journal "Études Rurales: Revue trimestrielle d'histoire, géographic, sociologie et économie des campagnes." The journal, first issued in April 1961, is edited by Georges Duby and Danki Faucher, it follows the great tradition of Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch in the width of its approach and its crossing of disciplinary boundaries. There are, for example, papers in the first three numbers on subjects as diverse as the use of aerial photographs in the history and geography of rural areas, personality characteristics of young children in rural society, centuriation and problems of Roman colonisation, and manors and peasant economy in the southern French Alps in 1338.

The article focuses on the journal the "Polish Sociological Bulletin." The journal provides information about the sociological research undertaken in Poland and to give our sociologists an opportunity to take part on their own ground in international discussion on some problems of social theory and methodology of the social sciences. It will be welcomed by social scientists unable to read Polish, who have until now had to rely on the English summaries published in reprint form by Przeglad Socjologiczny from 1957 onwards.

The article presents information related to sociology literature and research. A European Society for Rural Sociology was formed at castle Hoekelom near Wageningen on November 29th, 1957. Invitations are being issued to interested parties in all West European countries and it is intended to hold a conference next year, probably on migration from the countryside to the cities. The Society will issue a journal, establish a Centre of documentation for research publications in rural sociology; set up working parties.
