Archaeological LiDAR has evolved into an indispensable component of archaeological prospection and landscape archaeology. However, it is frequently employed as a black-box digital method, which confines it to the realm of a specialized field. Making scientific publications more accessible, transparent, and reproducible is one of the steps required to turn LiDAR into a background method for all archaeologists. This is possible, according to our proposal, through the Executable Map Paper concept. This concept can be understood as a type of executable paper that pursues Open Science's goals. The proposed technical solution consists of a PDF frontend, a persistence layer, and a hyperlinked interactive map. Executable Map Paper is applicable to all map-dependent sciences, including geography, geology, and any geoscience. In this study, the stages of creating a dynamic map in Microsoft Excel with the rapid prototyping instructional design model developed by Tripp and Bichelmeyer are explained to support and improve students' global awareness in social studies lessons in Turkey. The dynamic map was created in four general stages in the study, in which the waterfall design model was adopted. First, the needs and content analysis of the study were conducted for this aim. In the second stage, an algorithm was created in line with the determinations of the first stage, and, within this framework, the prototype of the dynamic map was designed in Microsoft Excel. In the third stage, the working status of the dynamic map was checked, the design process was completed, and the distortions on the coordinate system were eliminated. In the last stage, the dynamic map was evaluated by three experts, and the final prototype was created based on their feedback. The study was conducted using action research, the reflections of the acquisitions in the dynamic map are evaluated descriptively, and the opinions about the dynamic map are evaluated with content analysis. According to the obtained results, the dynamic map can reflect the acquisitions, concretize the content, and increase students' map literacy levels, but it also requires teacher support. In addition, the map also supports the competencies in teaching programs with mathematics and learning skills. Suggestions based on these results are also provided for educators and researchers. This short paper, analyzes "a situation of open education" using a relational map constructed in collaboration with a group of open educators as part of a larger study of the implications of scale within the field of open education. Applying situational analysis research methodology with its feminist and post-structural underpinnings, the purpose of this study is not to seek a "right" or "wrong" approach to scale but instead to invite a small group of open educators to deconstruct the concept of scale. This research approach is qualitative, critical and tentative and is written in the first person in alignment with the belief that research is neither objective nor neutral. The relational map presented offers insight into the desires of open educators to increase access, enact social justice, extend beyond the course and reach wider audiences in ways that consistently reject mass standardization. It also highlights the ways in which their efforts are constrained by overwork, a constraint that compels some open educators to adopt large-scale technologies and approaches. Building the foundation for the next stages in the larger research project, it highlights open educators' complicated relationships with scale. This paper concludes that there is a need to better differentiate the mechanisms of scale through which transformation with open education might be achieved.

This research study focuses on preservice teachers' (n=66) inspection of pedagogical connections between geography and geometrical reasoning. The aim of this study was to empirically investigate the use of mathematical analysis to enrich the social studies topics of the distortion of country sizes on the world map. The analysis of data collected from the 66 participants generated seven specific pedagogical strategies and covered nine identified mathematics and social studies topics during their lesson concepts for introducing the world map to elementary students. Results from this study reveal that after being corrected regarding this misconception, the participating preservice teachers were successful in developing learning activities to address this topic, employing student-centered strategies including technology-based, paper-based, hands-on, and feet-on approaches.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce citation networks, a novel method for identifying field connections, and to elaborate a theory of spatiality that deploys the metaphors of bubbles and foams to imagine space and change. After introducing the method and theory that guide this investigation, the author will introduce and describe the foams of the research published in the "Journal for Research in Mathematics Education" ("JRME") and "Educational Studies in Mathematics" ("ESM") during the 2010s. In doing so, the author will show what topics of inquiry constitute the dominant research foci of the field, or at least of the field as it is published in these mainstream mathematics education journals. Then, using Larnell and Bullock's (2018) socio-spatial urban framework as a lens, the author provides a critical reading of the bubbles and foams to discern what is marginalized or excluded, namely the urban. After investigating the inclusion of "urban," the author concludes by situating the role of the "Journal of Urban Mathematics Education" ("JUME") as a place to blow bubbles and reconfigure what can be seen, said, thought, and done in the name of (urban) mathematics education research.

Introduction: Technological advances have introduced three-dimensional (3-D) printing as an option for creating tactile maps for people with visual impairments (that is, those who are blind or have low vision), diversifying the types of map products that are available. At the same time, it presents a challenge to map makers to implement designs across multiple production methods. We evaluated map symbols to determine their discriminability across three different materials: microcapsule paper, 3-D printer plastic, and embossed paper. Methods: In a single session lasting less than 90 minutes, participants completed a matching task and provided informal feedback regarding their preferences. We measured speed and accuracy to establish discriminability of map symbols on each of the materials. Eighteen participants were recruited from a referred sample among attendees at the American Council of the Blind annual convention in 2013. Results: Response times were significantly different across the three materials (p < 0.001). Without sacrificing accuracy, response times were faster for the 3-D printed graphics than for either the microcapsule paper (p < 0.001) or the embossed paper (p < 0.001). User preference was divided across the three materials. Some people disliked the "sharp" corners of the 3-D printed symbols, while others preferred their "crisp" edges. Discussion: Our results demonstrate faster discriminability of a set of tactile symbols produced on a 3-D printer compared to those same symbols printed on microcapsule paper, the material for which the symbols were originally designed. Participant feedback reflected preferences both in favor of and against reading symbols produced on the 3-D printer. Implications for practitioners: This article discusses the functional equivalence of tactile symbols produced across multiple production technologies. It addresses two considerations when using 3-D printing to make tactile maps: preparing digital files for printing and the printing work flow. Digital files ready for printing on each of the three materials are available for download (Brittell, Lobben, & Lawrence 2016).

I present my perspective on the design process in this article, arguing for a focus on student learning and "slow design" that stems from knowledge of mathematics and their support system in the learning process. I have a question about the design process academization and task design research direction. Numerous examples from my work at the Freudenthal Institute are used to illustrate this paper.

Visual mapping is a method of presenting course material in a visual format to aid comprehension. This paper looks at applications of visual mapping in post-secondary courses to engage university students more deeply from the very beginning of a course, through creating visuals to which students can be constantly referred. We discuss our efforts to design visuals of learning outcomes, objectives, concepts, and processes in multiple courses. We will highlight the process we used to build the graphics and keyways these graphics improve the communication and understanding of learning outcomes, content, themes, and processes, primarily via knowledge visualization and visual perceptual learning. We also discuss sharing our discoveries with colleagues to help further develop our understanding of this approach.

Augmented reality (AR) technology enables paper maps to dynamically express three-dimensional geographic information, realizing the fusion of virtual and real information. However, in the current mainstream AR development software, the virtual information usually consists of prefabricated components (prefabs), and the content creation for AR maps heavily relies on manual prefabrication. It leads to repetitive and error-prone prefabrication work, which restricts the design of the dynamic, interactive functions of AR maps. To solve this problem, this paper explored the possibility of automatically generating AR map prefabs using object detection models to establish a data conversion interface from paper maps to AR maps. First, we compared and analyzed various object detection models and selected YOLOv8x to recognize map point symbols. Then, we proposed a method to automatically generate AR map prefabs based on the predicted bounding boxes of the object detection model, which could generate prefabs with corresponding categories and positional information. Finally, we developed an AR map prototype system based on Android mobile devices. We designed an interaction method for information queries in the system to verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper. The validation results indicate that our method can be practically applied to the AR map prefabrication process and can quickly generate AR map prefabs with high information accuracy. It alleviated the repetitive workload established through the manual prefabrication method and had specific feasibility and practicality. BACKGROUND: The importance of data quality whether in collection, analysis or presenting stage is a tangible and undeniable scientific fact and the main objects of researches implementation. Objective: This paper aims at explaining the main problems of the Iranian scientific papers for providing better data in the field of national and sub-national prevalence, incidence estimates and trends of obesity and overweight. METHODS: To assess and evaluate papers, we systematically followed an approved standard protocol. Retrieval of studies was performed through Thomson Reuters Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, as well as Iranian databases including Irandoc, Scientific Information Database (SID), and IranMedex. Using GBD (Global Burden of Diseases) validated quality assessment forms to assess the quality and availability of data in papers, we considered the following four main domains: a) Quality of studies, b) Quality report of the results, c) Responsiveness of corresponding authors, and d) Diversity in study settings. RESULTS: We retrieved 3,253 records; of these 1,875 were from international and 1378 from national databases. After refining steps, 129 (3.97%) papers remained related to our study domain. More than 51% of relevant papers were excluded because of poor quality of studies. The number of reported total population and points of data were 22,972 and 29 for boys, and 38,985 and 47 for girls, respectively. For all measures, missing values and diversities in studies' setting limited our ability to compare and analyze the results. Moreover, we had some serious problems in contacting the corresponding authors for complementary information necessary (Receptiveness: 17.9%). CONCLUSION: As the present paper focused on the main problems of Iranian scientific papers and proposed suggestions, the results will have implications for better policy making. Rainbow colour maps are known to be problematic yet remain widely used in scientific communication. This study extends work by Stoelzle and Stein (2021) to investigate the extent of their use in geoscience publications. It is found that over half (55 %) of all papers surveyed from six geoscience journals from the years 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 (n=2638) contained at least one visualisation that uses rainbow or red–green colour schemes and are therefore potentially misleading and colour-inaccessible. Recent changes to the submission guidelines for all European Geosciences Union (EGU) journals would seem to place greater responsibility in the future with editors and reviewers to identify and correct colour issues as part of the review process. Geographic skills area major competency that must be developed through spatial thinking. This paper describes whether learning material questions about Geographic Information System (GIS) in geography textbooks contains components of spatial thinking: concepts of space, use of representation tools, and reasoning processes. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis design. We conducted the evaluation of learning material questions about GIS on four geography textbooks of senior high schools in Indonesia by coding using taxonomy of spatial thinking. The 92 questions evaluated in this study contained multiple choice and essay practice questions. We identified questions by the following steps: 1) classifying concepts of space questions into non-spatial, spatial primitives, simple spatial, complex spatial; 2) determining the nature of tools of representation in the questions--use and non-use; 3) classifying processes of reasoning from each question into input, processing, and output. The results showed that the majority of GIS learning material questions are not based on spatial thinking. Seventy-one percent of questions are non-spatial, 73 percent of questions did not use maps to represent spatial thinking, and 67 percent of questions are low-level reasoning process (input). These findings indicate that GIS learning material questions in geography textbooks do not include the complete spatial thinking component. As a result, the lack of a complete spatial thinking component in GIS learning material questions in geography textbooks results in less developed geography competency among students. Learning material questions should contain the components of spatial thinking at a high level, such as using complex spatial on concepts of space, using tools for representation, and using output for reasoning processes. Therefore, for geographic textbooks, the National Education Standards Agency must develop standardized questions focused on spatial concepts to represent high-level spatial thinking.

In this paper, we examine the conceptual understanding and experiences that students in German secondary schools have of boundaries. For our research we conducted qualitative interviews and surveys (interviews n=20; surveys n=21) with children (aged 14-17) born both in Germany and with refugee backgrounds. We asked for the children's conceptual understanding of the emergence and function of boundaries and their personal encounters with them. We studied the results of these interviews using qualitative content analysis to learn more about the conceptual understanding and experiences of students. Our findings on the emergence of borders show that students have limited understanding of boundaries and differing spatial concepts that exist for them. We also observed interesting distinctions between personal experiences of borders. The results may provide a base for further research and development in terms of conceptual-change-based methods for geography education on the topics of territories, borders and boundaries.

Topographic maps comprise a rich data source for the processing and analysis of geographic information. However, the management of paper topographic maps is still dominated by an inefficient manual method, and there is no counting equipment for topographic maps that is suitable for narrow map warehouse passages. The existing algorithms relating to paper counting require paper hardness and cannot directly obtain the internal information of topographic maps. To address the above problems, using a map inventory machine transformed from a paddle-type paper counting machine to perform a preliminary count and obtain the video data of the counting progress, an automatic counting algorithm for topographic maps for map management is proposed in this study. First, the periodic feature changes of all the targets and each individual target in the videos are analyzed. Second, a deformable parts model accelerated by fast feature pyramids and by reducing the region of interest is used for the object detection of mechanical wheels. The grayscale variance function is selected to quantify the quality change in the images. Finally, a fusion window counting model is constructed with the adaptive window and fixed window methods. The experimental results show that the average counting accuracy of the model is about 95%, which can verify the initial counting results of the machine and provide high-quality keyframes for the subsequent sheet designation recognition. Traumatic haemorrhage is a prevalent clinical condition, and effective and timely haemostasis is crucial for the preservation of patients' lives. In recent years, injectable hemostatic materials have gained significant attention due to their excellent hemostatic efficacy, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, making them widely applied in the treatment of incompressible traumatic haemorrhage. Systematic analysis of injectable hemostatic materials is crucial for research in this area. This article provides a comprehensive review of the development and research trends of injectable hemostatic materials over the past 20 years using visualization techniques. Analysis of collaboration and co‐citation networks revealed localized research collaboration networks, highlighting the need for enhanced international collaboration in the field of injectable hemostatic materials. Current research focuses primarily on hemostatic materials, hemostatic processes, and hemostatic mechanisms. Injectable hemostatic materials with excellent performance offer promising strategies for wound healing. This review provides a comprehensive and systematic summary of injectable hemostatic materials, offering valuable guidance for the development and clinical application of novel injectable hemostatic materials. Additionally, visualized methodology and mapping analysis are effective data mining methods that provide approaches and strategies for clear knowledge network analysis. These methods facilitate better understanding and interpretation of research dynamics in the field of injectable hemostatic materials, thereby guiding and inspiring future research. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was impossible to carry out on-campus teaching and examinations as planned for the first-year elementary school Bachelor's degree teacher training courses during the summer term of 2019/2020. Therefore, we moved our on-campus STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) related courses to schooling at home. For their course examination, students designed outdoor trails in groups with the educational technology MathCityMap based on an integrated STEAM approach. Hence, they combined STEAM with real-world situations (e.g., monuments, marketplaces, playgrounds). The tasks within the trails required the use of technologies such as augmented reality (AR), digital modelling (e.g., GeoGebra 3D Graphing Calculator), and GPS. Analogue measuring tools (e.g., triangle ruler) were also used in the task designs. We collected data from 21 trails with 259 tasks from 49 pre-service teachers to analyse the effects on professional growth in STEAM education. Through hierarchical cluster analysis we identified three different clusters with patterns regarding STEAM in outdoor trails. This paper will describe a pedagogical framework for the integrated STEAM approach to designing and evaluating outdoor trails. Furthermore, we will explain patterns pre-service teachers developed during this professional development.

Communities around the world have distinctive ways of representing language use across space and territory. The approach to and method of mapping languages that began with nineteenth-century European dialectology and colonial boundary making is one such way. Though practiced by relatively few linguists today, language mapping has developed considerably from its roots yet remains stymied by problems of ideology, representation, and data quality. In this paper, we argue that digital language mapping in hyperdiverse cities can both contribute to overcoming these problems and bring visibility and resources to communities using Indigenous, minority, and primarily oral languages. For these communities, official surveys like the census are often inadequate, leaving a gap that communities, linguists, and mapping experts working in partnership can address. Urban language mapping as a field should make space for Indigenous, minority, and primarily oral languages through geospatial visualization -- in terms that the communities themselves recognize and with a public policy agenda. As a case study, we present our ongoing efforts with LANGUAGEMAP.NYC to map the most linguistically diverse urban center in the world: New York City.

This article reports the results of an experimental study that investigated the effectiveness of Google Earth and Wiki tools in improving the oral presentation skills of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and boosting their motivation for learning. The participants (n =81) are enrolled in writing classes at two English-medium institutions. The study employed the factorial mixed methods pre-test/post-test control group experimental design. The experimental conditions included the experimental group's use of Google Earth and Wiki dynamics in conducting research and delivering oral presentations whereas participants in the control group were given the regular oral presentation and the research paper instruction. The findings of the study underscored the effectiveness of the integration of Google Earth and Wiki into classroom practices. Google Earth and Wiki allowed active learning with information. As such, Google Earth and Wiki improved learners' oral presentation skills and perceptions. Wiki visualization devices and structure could increase scaffolding and collaboration. Google Earth could facilitate critical thinking and true spatial analytical operations. The integration of Google Earth and Wiki could promote student-centered learning and motivation.

The relevance of the problem of organizing blended learning for students is related to the sharpening contradiction between the high potential of this educational technology and the poor methodological elaboration of its use in actual learning practice. With regard to this, the paper is aimed at providing grounds for the methodological system of blended learning for students with learning roadmaps and bringing it to life. The leading idea of the methodological system consists in creating a special subject information environment that enables each student to design their own roadmaps for mastering certain subjects that fulfill the principles of blended learning. Theoretical justification of using the learning roadmaps in teaching the students has been given and blended learning in conditions of subject information environment has been performed in practice. It is shown that the students' blended learning model based on the course learning roadmap promotes the successful acquisition of IT subjects. The suggested method of organizing the students' blended learning is of interest for the contemporary theory of learning as well as for teachers implementing the elements of e-learning in their educational process.

Aboriginal people in Alice Springs mapped the safe places in their Town Camps. This participatory research led to the implementation of safety features. Safety mapping was developed in response to deficit-based research which pathologized Aboriginal people in Alice Springs. Safety mapping was conducted with Aboriginal people in Town Camps to identify safe places and improve safety. A strengths-based approach showed that problems and their solutions are known, and there are considerable safety assets within Town Camps. The safety mapping centred the voices and experiences of Aboriginal people to produce research that was of benefit to Town Campers, over which Indigenous people retained ownership. This paper highlights that an Indigenist approach to participatory action research is strengthened by Indigenous knowledge in driving social justice.

In this paper, we provide a design-actuality gap-analysis of the internet infrastructure that exists in developing nations and nations in the global South with the deployed internet computer technologies (ICT)-assisted programs that are designed to use internet infrastructure to provide educational opportunities. Programs that specifically pinpoint females' access to schooling are foregrounded in this paper. For our research, we aggregated data on internet infrastructure and data on where ICT-assisted educational endeavors were being deployed in order to create a technography--a series of maps--that would illustrate where there is internet infrastructure that might support ICT-assisted educational programs, where ICT-assisted educational programs are being deployed, and where there is a design-actuality gap. Our research highlights two types of design-actuality gaps: there are places where there is access to internet infrastructure, but very little access to ICT-assisted educational programs; and there are also places where ICT-assisted educational programs have been deployed, but there is very little access to the kind of internet infrastructure that is necessary to support these programs.

Outdoor, hands-on and experiential learning, as opposed to instruction-based learning in classroom, increases student satisfaction and motivation leading to a deeper understanding of the subject. However, the use of outdoor exercises in undergraduate biology courses is declining due to a variety of constraints. Thus, the goal of this paper is to describe a convenient, no-cost and flexible exercise using an on-campus botanical tour for strengthening specific knowledge areas of major plant groups. Its assessment on conduct and coverage, and student-perceived and actual knowledge gain is also described. Data presented derived from traditional biology undergraduates in sophomore year over nine fall and three spring semesters. Conduct and coverage was assessed using a summative survey including open-ended questions administered to 198 students. A pre- and post-exercise survey addressing 10 knowledge categories was administered to 139 students to evaluate student-perceived knowledge gain. Quiz grades from the on-campus tour exercise were compared with average quiz grades from two in-class plant-related labs of 234 students to assess actual knowledge gain. Each student reporting on the conduct and coverage indicated either one or a combination of outcomes of the exercise as positive engagement, experiential learning, or of interest. Student-perceived improvement was evident in all ten knowledge categories with a greater improvement in categories learned anew during exercise compared to subjects reviewed. Quiz grades from the exercise were >11% greater than quiz grades from the two in-class plant-related labs. Active learning with interest likely contributed to the increased perceived and actual knowledge gains. Suggestions for adoption of the exercise in different settings are presented based on both student comments and instructor's experience.

The project "3D and 4D Simulations for Landscape Reconstruction and Damage Scenarios: GIS Pilot Applications" has been devised with the intention to deal with the demand for research, innovation and applicative methodology on the part of the international programme, requiring concrete results to increase the capacity to know, anticipate and respond to a natural disaster. This project therefore sets out to develop an experimental methodology, a wide geodatabase, a connected performant GIS platform and multifunctional scenarios able to profitably relate the added values deriving from different geotechnologies, aimed at a series of crucial steps regarding landscape reconstruction, event simulation, damage evaluation, emergency management, multi-temporal analysis. The Vesuvius area has been chosen for the pilot application owing to such an impressive number of people and buildings subject to volcanic risk that one could speak in terms of a possible national disaster. The steps of the project move around the following core elements: creation of models that reproduce the territorial and anthropic structure of the past periods, and reconstruction of the urbanized area, with temporal distinctions; three-dimensional representation of the Vesuvius area in terms of infrastructuralresidential aspects; GIS simulation of the expected event; first examination of the healthcareepidemiological consequences; educational proposals. This paper represents a proactive contribution which describes the aims of the project, the steps which constitute a set of specific procedures for the methodology which we are experimenting, and some thoughts regarding the geodatabase useful to "package" illustrative elaborations. Since the involvement of the population and adequate hazard preparedness are very important aspects, some educational and communicational considerations are presented in connection with the use of geotechnologies to promote the knowledge of risk.

Author Bryan Smith agrees that critiques of Sir John A. Macdonald, and Cornwallis as unworthy of public commemoration are warranted and necessary, particularly as each was instrumental in cementing settler-colonial projects of dominion and erasure of Indigenous populations. However, he observes that each figure is but one point (or multiple) in the web of articulations that comprise the city-texts of Canada. Drawing on the example of the city now known as Toronto, Smith shows how critically examining city-texts can provide a generative way to thwart the insidiousness of the colonial settler project. An appended street maps show a concentration of Indigenous toponyms concentrated at the corner of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue (West and East). The cluster of Indigenous toponyms--Nipigon, Abitibi, Athabaska, Otonabee and Madawaska--is concentrated at the literal margins of the city's politically defined space. Further, there is a particular scalar advantage afforded to "Yonge" and "Steeles" (named for English people (Wise & Gould, 2011)) that, by virtue of their arterial nature, enjoy greater prominence in popular language of space. While this map is only one example, it draws attention to how space can serve to, in quite literal ways, marginalize histories that don't fit with the banality of European commemorative privilege.

Supported by the omnipresent State in the past, French music education leans increasingly towards a more liberal and competitive model. In the current context of a decentralized economy and European integration, music conservatories are called upon to contribute to regional and municipal development and enhance European student mobility. How do conservatories react to the restructuring of the competitive field? How do they affect European territorial cohesion? Are they managing adaptive or hybrid strategies with new conceptions of music education? Alternatively, do they gradually move away from the marketplace and become an obsolete and difficult heritage to maintain? To answer these questions, it is necessary to analyze the current balance of power among the different elements of the French multi-level system of conservatories, including communal, inter-communal, departmental, regional, national and European institutions. By combining different sources of spatial and statistical data, this paper contributes to constructing a comparative institutional geography of French multi-level territorial divisions. Extraction and treatment of the "small data" with SPSS statistical software allowed us to build a number of small-scale datasets that were merged to broader geographical databases from the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). The geographical units that structure the INSEE databases (the zip and district codes, codes of regions, departments, GPS coordinates) made possible the location of each conservatory within municipal, departmental, regional and national spaces. A cartographic approach to studying music conservatories allows the identification of problems that deserve further detailed qualitative and statistical study in the future.

In this paper, a large class of contractions is studied that contains Banach and Matkowski maps as particular cases. Sufficient conditions for the existence of fixed points are proposed in the framework of b-metric spaces. The convergence and stability of the Picard iterations are analyzed, giving error estimates for the fixed-point approximation. Afterwards, the iteration proposed by Kirk in 1971 is considered, studying its convergence, stability, and error estimates in the context of a quasi-normed space. The properties proved can be applied to other types of contractions, since the self-maps defined contain many others as particular cases. Urban villages represent informal residential areas emerging since China's rapid urbanization process. Scientific map generalization of urban villages with scientific maps aids readers in discerning their distribution and making informed decisions concerning them. However, there is still a scarcity of research on the automatic extraction and generalization of urban villages from vector data, which needs to be studied to further improve the expression of maps. To address this problem, this paper presents a methodology for the extraction and generalization of urban villages from Digital Line Graphics. Firstly, a heuristic approach is employed to analyze the atypical morphological characteristics of urban villages. Then, indices based on computational geometry and the modified Hausdorff distance are utilized to quantify these traits. Lastly, an automatic generalization principle for urban villages is offered. The world of science is growing at an unprecedented speed with more and more scholarly papers produced each year. The scientific landscape is constantly changing as research specialties evolve, merge or become obsolete. It is difficult for researchers, research managers and the public alike to keep abreast with these changes and maintain a true and fair overview of the world of science. Such an overview is necessary to stimulate scientific progress, to maintain flexible and responsive research organizations, and to secure collaboration and knowledge exchange between different research specialties and the wider community. Although science mapping is applied to a wide range of scientific areas, examples of their practical use are sparse. This paper demonstrates how to use a topical, scientific reference maps to understand and navigate in dynamic research landscapes and how to utilize science maps to facilitate strategic thinking. In this study, the research domain of biology at Aarhus University serves as an example. All scientific papers authored by the current, permanent staff were extracted (6,830 in total). These papers were used to create a semantic cognitive map of the research field using a co-word analysis based on keywords and keyword phrases. A workflow was written in Python for easy and fast retrieval of information for topic maps (including tokens from keywords section and title) to generate intelligible research maps, and to visualize the distribution of topics (keywords), papers, journal categories, individual researchers and research groups on any scale. The resulting projections revealed new insights into the structure of the research community and made it possible to compare researchers or research groups to describe differences and similarities, to find scientific overlaps or gaps, and to understand how they relate and connect. Science mapping can be used for intended (top-down) as well as emergent (bottom-up) strategy development. The paper concludes that science maps provide alternative views of the intricate structures of science to supplement traditional bibliometric information. The teaching and learning of map reading and interpretation at senior secondary school level in Nigeria is now at lower ebb. Teachers seem to scarcely and scantly teach it and students seem to be seriously scared of it. Studies, personal encounter and Chief examiners reports of West African Examination Council have shown that students' performance in map reading is rather growing worse every year. This paper, based on empirical evidences, identifies causes for students' hatred and failure in map reading, and proffers solutions to them.

This paper investigates the Islam and Muslim life in German textbooks. The study is based on the analysis of current Geography textbooks in Bavarian secondary schools. As a first step, the authors developed a system for objective analysis of the textbooks that structures the content in categories. In a second step, the authors used the qualitative method. One category system was developed to analyze the didactical quality of the illustration to the theme Islam and Muslim life another category system was developed to analyze the different aspects of Islam and Muslim life in textbooks. Quantitative analysis shows that the book authors use a variety of illustrations, but especially photos followed by maps. The quality is generally good. Three aspects were selected for qualitative analysis: Spatial representations of Islam, Islam as a religion and Muslim people in Germany. The spatial representation of Islam across the different textbooks is very diverse. Islam is usually not presented as a European phenomenon. The presentation of Islam as an oriental phenomenon risks propagating the idea that there is no other religious group in this area. The information on Islam as a religion is often superficial and may cause students to falsely assume that Islam is a homogeneous religion. Overall, the reader is led to wrongly falsely assume that Muslim migrants, many of whom are living in the 3rd generation in Germany, are still not really part of German society. This is certainly not true for the majority.

The Traffic Light Report (TLR) project is an educational intervention designed for pharmacy undergraduates. This paper reports on analysis of TLR data specifically focusing on its potential as an innovative tool which combines Miller's pyramid, technology and student voice to examine a curriculum for Assurance of Learning (AoL). In 2014, educators mapped each summative assessment to the relevant National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia (NCS) alongside levels of expected performance on Miller's pyramid of clinical competence (Knows, Knows how, Shows how, Does). Simultaneously, students were invited to self-reflect using the same performance levels. The Miller's scale enabled a comparison between students' and their educators' understanding of the performance level demanded by assessments. Analysis highlighted a disconnect between students' and their educators' interpretations of the same assessed curriculum. The TLR facilitates quality enhancement by providing educators and their students with a logical meeting point for discussing foundation, scaffolding and integration of assessment across a course for AoL. This has portability to other professional disciplines.

The Patch workshop explores creative/critical analyses that can map the collectively relevant topoi of semiosis in linguistic texts according to the three ecologies as articulated by Félix Guattari. As creative pedagogues both in service and critical of creative economics, we valourize a generative practice, one that results in successive creative readings, writings, visualizations, sonifications and audiovisual artifacts. The Patch is a human-computer procedural algorithm, engaging a series of recursive and recombinant processes that utilize several software programs, collaborative writing and performance practices to bridge analogue and digital literacies. A total of 80 teacher education students, graduate students and faculty, working with a single input text, provided the data reported in this paper.

The present paper demonstrates that insights from the affordances perspective can contribute to developing a more comprehensive model of grammaticalization. The authors argue that the grammaticalization process is afforded differently depending on the values of three contributing parameters: the factor (schematized as a qualitative-quantitative map or a wave of a gram), environment (understood as the structure of the stream along which the gram travels), and actor (narrowed to certain cognitive-epistemological capacities of the users, in particular to the fact of being a native speaker). By relating grammaticalization to these three parameters and by connecting it to the theory of optimization, the proposed model offers a better approximation to realistic cases of grammaticalization: The actor and environment are overtly incorporated into the model and divergences from canonical grammaticalization paths are both tolerated and explicable.

Almost every component of the information society is influenced by elements built on communication technology. Learning also tends to be related to the dynamic usage of computers. Nowadays, a number of applications (online or offline) are also available that engage large groups of potential users and simultaneously provide a virtual environment to facilitate learning. This study introduces the self-developed interactive blind map teaching-examining e-learning system of the University of Debrecen. Results of testing the system with a control group are also presented. Both experimental and control groups of students were required to sita test of topographic knowledge following a semester of study. The pass mark for the test was 80%. The experimental group used the new digital environment to study, while the control group prepared for their exam using paper maps in the traditional way. The key research questions addressed by the study were to determine whether exam results obtained by the group using the "digital" method better than those of the control's; and if there were a difference between the exam performances of the two groups, was this statistically significant and, therefore, likely to occur in other similar scenarios?

High-definition (HD) maps serve as crucial infrastructure for autonomous driving technology, facilitating vehicles in positioning, environmental perception, and motion planning without being affected by weather changes or sensor-visibility limitations. Maintaining precision and freshness in HD maps is paramount, as delayed or inaccurate information can significantly impact the safety of autonomous vehicles. Utilizing crowdsourced data for HD map updating is widely recognized as a superior method for preserving map accuracy and freshness. Although it has garnered considerable attention from researchers, there remains a lack of comprehensive exploration into the entire process of updating HD maps through crowdsourcing. For this reason, it is imperative to review and discuss crowdsourcing techniques. This paper aims to provide an overview of the overall process of crowdsourced updates, followed by a detailed examination and comparison of existing methodologies concerning the key techniques of data collection, information extraction, and change detection. Around the world, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) play a fundamental role in the economic, social, cultural, and ecological ambits of local communities. Today, the most important uses of MAPs are their applications in the pharmaceutical, perfume, cosmetics, toothpaste, soap, beverage, and food industries. At the same time, the expression MAPs is often used with a plurality of meanings that are not always clear and well-defined. Thus, the paper aims to answer two research questions: (1) to understand how the expression MAPs has been meant over time by scholars, and (2) to realize the weight that socio-economic research regarding MAPs has assumed in this context. To these ends, a literature review was conducted using the scientific database Scopus. The results highlight that researchers started talking explicitly about MAPs in the 1950s, and the geographical focus of the literature on this theme is in India, followed by China. Researchers have published studies concerning the agronomic aspects, cultivation, characterization, and germination techniques of MAPs, but the most cited articles concern the health and beneficial properties of their essential oils. At the same time, nobody has ever wondered what MAPs are, and since 1977, the World Health Organization definition has been taken for granted, and any species with medicinal or aromatic functions is considered to be a MAP. Regarding the socio-economic weight of the research conducted on MAPs, they represent only 1% of the total academic publications, but from them, it has emerged that, especially in rural areas, MAPs depict important sources of income for several local communities. At the same time, there is a need to increase the estimation of the ecosystem services that MAPs offer, the analyses of consumer preferences in the search for new business opportunities, and the environmental impact assessment of the entire supply chain. This paper proposes a new methodology to improve territorial cohesion in clustering processes where many variables from different topics are considered. Clustering techniques provide added value to identify typologies, but there are still unsolved challenges when data contain an unbalanced number of variables from different topics. The territorial feature selection method (TFSM) is presented as a method to select the representative variable of each topic such that the interpretability of resulting clusters is preserved and the geographical cohesion is improved with respect to classical approaches. This paper also introduces the thermometer as a new knowledge acquisition tool that allows experts to transfer semantics to the data mining process. TFSM proposes the index of potential explainability ( E k ) as the criteria to select the most promising variables for clustering. E k is based on the combination of inferential testing and metrics such as support. The proposal is applied with the INSESS-COVID19 database, where territorial groups of vulnerable populations were found. A set of 195 variables with 21 unbalanced thematic blocks is used to compare the results with a traditional multiview clustering analysis with promising results from both the geographical and the thematic point of view and the capacity to support further decision making. The paper describes a workflow to flatten 3D photogrammetric models of undevelopable surfaces into unfragmented 2D texture maps. The aim is to create a texture map with reduced fragmentation compared to typical photogrammetric texture files associated with 3D models. Geometric reformatting of the mesh is required to achieve an unfragmented final texture image with enough visual quality to allow for its use in 2D editing software (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). With a lighter model and defragmented texture, graphic documentation of conditions, treatments, or other relevant information can be performed directly. The approach considers both simple and complex architectural surfaces, with particular attention to elements that cannot be developed without introducing distortions. In the case of historic buildings, such surfaces constitute the majority, especially in the case of decorative elements and irregular vaulted systems. The approach extends to full 3D models, particularly those where orthomosaics would result in stretched details. We will discuss two methods: the first is particularly suitable when the photogrammetric project (oriented images) is still available, and the second applies to generic 3D models without the availability of the original images. A seismo-tectonic map depicting the principal structural elements of the northern Central American region has been meticulously crafted to characterize the tectonic setting and the individual seismo-tectonic structures of this area. This region is subject to heightened seismic activity, with a large number of medium-high Magnitude occurrences transpiring annually. This map is presented alongside an informative dataset wherein fault trace locations, geometry and kinematics descriptors and other available metadata have been stored. Therefore, the map offers a detailed and up-to-date depiction of the brittle deformation across the region, serving as a valuable resource for a comprehensive assessment of the seismo-tectonic framework. Moreover, the map and its accompanying database summarize fault characteristics for seismic hazard analysts and for civil protection workers, proving to be useful instruments in pinpointing areas where urgent fault research should be conducted from a seismic risk standpoint. Overtaking on a dual-lane road with the presence of oncoming vehicles poses a considerable challenge in the field of autonomous driving. With the assistance of high-definition maps, autonomous vehicles can plan a relatively safe trajectory for executing overtaking maneuvers. However, the creation of high-definition maps requires extensive preparation, and in rural areas where dual two-lane roads are common, there is little pre-mapping to provide high-definition maps. This paper proposes an end-to-end model called OG-Net (Overtaking Guide Net), which accomplishes overtaking tasks without map generation or communication with other vehicles. OG-Net initially evaluates the likelihood of a successful overtaking maneuver before executing the necessary actions. It incorporates the derived probability value with a set of simple parameters and utilizes a Gaussian differential controller to determine the subsequent vehicle movements. The Gaussian differential controller effectively adapts a fixed geometric curve to various driving scenarios. Unlike conventional autonomous driving models, this approach employs uncomplicated parameters rather than RNN-series networks to integrate contextual information for overtaking guidance. Furthermore, this research curated a new end-to-end overtaking dataset, CarlaLanePass, comprising first-view image sequences, overtaking success rates, and real-time vehicle status during the overtaking process. The analysis of neurons that exhibit receptive fields dependent on an organism's spatial location, such as grid, place or boundary cells typically begins by mapping their activity in space using firing rate maps. However, mapping approaches are varied and depend on multiple tuning parameters that are usually chosen qualitatively by the experimenter and thus vary significantly across studies. Small changes in parameters such as these can impact results significantly, yet, to date a quantitative investigation of firing rate maps has not been attempted. Using simulated datasets, we examined how tuning parameters, recording duration and firing field size affect the accuracy of spatial maps generated using the most widely used approaches. For each approach we found a clear subset of parameters which yielded low-error firing rate maps and isolated the parameters yielding 1) the least error possible and 2) the Pareto-optimal parameter set which balanced error, computation time, place field detection accuracy and the extrapolation of missing values. Smoothed bivariate histograms and averaged shifted histograms were consistently associated with the fastest computation times while still providing accurate maps. Adaptive smoothing and binning approaches were found to compensate for low positional sampling the most effectively. Kernel smoothed density estimation also compensated for low sampling well and resulted in accurate maps, but it was also among the slowest methods tested. Overall, the bivariate histogram, coupled with spatial smoothing, is likely the most desirable method in the majority of cases. Studying these neurons often begins with the creation of a firing rate map: a statistical representation of the cell's activity in space. Different methods, relying on different parameters, are commonly used to generate these maps. These parameters can have a huge impact on the maps created and, in turn, any results derived from them. Yet, very little quantification of these parameters has been attempted and they are almost universally chosen based on qualitative, study-dependent assessments. In this paper we quantify the 'best' combinations of parameters for each method and provide a way for researchers to calculate these for their own data. Using parameters that are both consistent across studies and quantifiably demonstrated to be the most accurate will reduce the variability between future studies while improving the validity of their results. Dyspnea is a common emergency requiring urgent care, and a variety of factors may mislead emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Typically, EMT education uses traditional lectures with paper books. The effect of interactive eBooks on EMT learning has not been explored. This study aims to develop an interactive eBook in dyspnea assessment and management and to evaluate its learning effect. A quasi-experimental design with three repeated measures was used. A total of 117 EMTs were recruited and assigned to the experimental group (eBook, n = 56) and the comparison group (paper book, n = 61). Questionnaires were administered to both groups at three time points. The results show that both materials can improve cognition and that the interactive eBook has better effects than the paper book. The interactive eBook motivated EMT to learn more than the paper book, but motivation did not last for five weeks. The long-term effect of the interactive eBook on confidence compared to the paper book is significant. The eBook can include real cases, concept maps, videos, quizzes, and instant feedback to meet learner needs. The InSAR technique is known to be a powerful tool for precise monitoring of wide areas in terms of displacements. It is conceivable to also use this technique to monitor landslide areas, but geometrical distortions due to ground morphology and land cover could make InSAR processing ineffective for such applications. Because of the computational burden of InSAR processing, it is important to have preliminary knowledge about the possible suitability of the technique for the inspected area before acquiring and processing the data. This paper aims to perform a preliminary analysis of the InSAR sensitivity for the specific case of landslide monitoring. A new approach is proposed considering aspects specific to landslide displacements, which are basically tangent to the slope direction. Pre-processed coherence maps were used to account for the impact of land cover. The whole analysis can be carried out without acquiring cumbersome SAR datasets and can be used as a preliminary step. The Italian Emilia-Romagna region has been considered as the study area, with landslide areas accounting for more than 12% of its territory. The outcomes show that the inspected area has favourable morphological conditions, mainly thanks to its mild slopes and the limited number of landslides facing north, but the land cover has a strong negative impact on the InSAR sensitivity. A YOLOv5 aluminum profile defect detection algorithm that integrates attention and multi-scale features is proposed in this paper to address the issues of the low detection accuracy, high false detection rates, and high missed detection rates that are caused by the large-scale variation of surface defects, inconspicuous small defect characteristics, and a lack of concentrated feature information in defect areas. Firstly, an improved CBAM (Channel-Wise Attention Module) convolutional attention module is employed, which effectively focuses on the feature information of defect areas in the aluminum defect dataset with only a small amount of spatial dimension. Secondly, a bidirectional weighted feature fusion network is utilized, incorporating a multi-scale feature fusion network with skip connections to aggregate various high-resolution features, thus enriching the semantic expression of features. Then, new size feature maps that have not been fused are introduced into the detection layer network to improve the detection effect of small target defects. Experimental results indicate that an average detection accuracy (mAP) of 82.6% was achieved by the improved YOLOv5 algorithm on the aluminum surface defect dataset. An improvement of 6.2% over the previous version was observed. The current defect detection requirements of aluminum profile production sites are met by this enhanced algorithm. This paper describes the nine sixteenth-century maps, texts, and globes that showed Sir Francis Drake's route of circumnavigation of the world. It shows the relationships between these nine artifacts and suggests the year of disclosure for each. The oldest of these is the Whitehall map, which was the direct or indirect precursor of the Drake-Mellon map, the French-Drake Van Sype map, the Dutch-Drake map, and the Hondius Broadside map. Most world maps published between 1561 and 1588 have a huge bulge on the coast of Chile. Rapid technological advances in recent decades have led researchers to refine the accuracy of their studies. In the field of acoustics, the impact of new devices is noticeable, especially in the investigations of cultural heritage buildings. The selection of a seat in theatres and concert halls has always been a concern, since the live experience of artistic performance depends on the quality of hearing and sight view. This paper deals with the elaboration of 360° acoustic maps made in the National Theatre of Zagreb, one of the opera theatres investigated with the Sipario project. The analysis of the main acoustic parameters has been carried out, starting with site measurements describing the acoustic response at various representative points of the main hall by covering the audience area. In addition, acoustic maps have been created for some selected positions based on a 3-degree-of-freedom (3dof) technique that allows a panoramic visualization of the impulse responses (IRs). This methodology completes the determination of early and late reflections that contribute to the acoustic quality of a place. In addition to the interest of experts in acoustics, this methodology can also be adopted by music lovers who can find a reasonable explanation for seat selection when booking their tickets. The Algonquian Linguistic Atlas (www.atlas-ling.ca) is an online multimedia linguistic atlas of Algonquian languages in Canada, built based on a template of conversational topics. It includes Algonquian languages primarily from the CreeInnu-Naskapi continuum, but also from Blackfoot, Mi'kmaw, and Ojibwe (including Algonquin), with other languages in progress. In this paper we discuss how the data collected for the Algonquian Linguistic Atlas was used to conduct a bottom-up study of dialectal boundaries in Cree-Innu-Naskapi and their degree of relatedness to neighboring Algonquian languages. By studying the coincidence of phonological, lexical, grammatical, syntactic, and semantic isoglosses drawn from the Atlas data, we hope to show the research potential coming out of tools developed for pedagogical purposes. This research can in turn further guide the development of new terminology and more pedagogical resources, as well as lead to better understanding of dialectal differences and similarities across the language family.

The application of AR to explore augmented map representation has become a research hotspot due to the growing application of AR in maps and geographic information in addition to the rising demand for automated map interpretation. Taking the AR map as the research object, this paper focuses on AR map tracking and registration and the virtual–real fusion method based on element recognition. It strives to establish a new geographic information visualization interface and application model. AR technology is applied to the augmented representation of 2D planar maps. A step-by-step identification and extraction method of unmarked map elements are designed and proposed based on the analysis of the characteristics of planar map elements. This method combines the spatial and attribute characteristics of point-like elements and line-like elements, extracts the color, geometric features, and spatial distribution of map elements through computer vision methods, and completes the identification and automatic extraction of map elements. The multi-target image recognition and extraction method based on template and contour matching, and the line element recognition and extraction method based on color space and area growth are introduced in detail. Then, 3D tracking and registration is used to realize the unmarked tracking and registration of planar map element images, and the AR map virtual–real fusion algorithm is proposed. The experimental results and results of an analysis of stepwise identification and extraction of unmarked map elements and map virtual–real fusion reveal that the stepwise identification of unmarked map elements and map model virtual–real fusion studied in this paper is effective. Through the analysis of map element step-by-step recognition efficiency and recognition rate, it is proved that the element step-by-step method in this paper is fast, its recognition efficiency meets the AR real-time requirements, and its recognition accuracy is high.
