Three papers are presented From the first symposium on ethical issues in aggression research of the International Society for Research on Aggression held at the biennial meetings 1980 in Haren, The Netherlands. The symposium reflected a growing awareness of the society that their research is a matter for public concern and scrutiny, both for its potentially good uses, and for its potential misuse and misinterpretation. A paper by Santiago Genove´s, a Mexican anthropologist, outlined some of the issues concerning the dissemination of information and misinformation of aggression to the public, along with an extensive bibliography on the subject. A paper by Paul Brain, a British zoologist, addressed the issues surrounding the use of animals in aggression research and the arguments being used in public attacks upon it. Daniel Wikler, a practitioner of normative ethics from the United States, discussed ethics as theory and as practice and suggested some of the types of actions that the Society could consider undertaking. The article presents abstracts of papers presented at the 9th Annual Meeting of the Society for Cutaneous Ultrastructure Research, held at Leiden, the Netherlands, in April 1982. Fetal manifestation of bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma and prenatal diagnosis of the disease by means of electron microscopy of fetal skin biopsies was discussed. A female patient with a generalized congenital ichthyosis was presented. The clinical picture was characterized by a reticulate hyperkeratosis with a remarkable skin pattern. Immuno-electronmicroscopic study of Langerhans' cells was also presented.

Introduction: Characterizing somatosensory profiles or phenotypes in subgroups of patients may provide indirect insights into underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. The most common method for quantifying somatosensory function is quantitative sensory testing (QST). This paper describes a protocol for determining these somatosensory profiles in a breast cancer population. Methods: A standardized QST protocol is implemented including nine static and dynamic QST methods (mechanical detection-pain thresholds, pressure pain thresholds, thermal detection-pain thresholds for heat and cold, temporal summation and conditioned pain modulation) performed in the surgical area and more distant regions. The algebraic sign of the resulting z score is adjusted appropriately for clarity of data presentation (increased-decreased sensitivity to the tested stimuli). Results: The z-scores acquired with this protocol can inform at a glance whether there is a loss or gain in somatosensory function. Findings can be visualized using a scatter or bar chart. Discussion: Although this protocol was used to determine somatosensory profiles in a breast cancer population, the methodology for determining these profiles can be applied to data from other populations as well. Process evaluation: To correctly interpret QST results, data from a reference population that matches in QST method and test site is required. Background On August 5th, 2006, the third meeting of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID) Special Interest Research Group (SIRG) on Parents and Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities was convened in Maastricht, The Netherlands, coinciding with the 2nd International Congress of IASSID-Europe. The SIRG Parents and Parenting with Intellectual Disabilities membership includes scholars from a number of countries including the United States, Canada, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. These scholars come from a range of academic and professional disciplines, including sociology, psychology, education, nursing, social work and occupational therapy. Method This position paper developed by the Parenting SIRG brings into sharp relief the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted by the General Assembly in December 2006. The convention affirms the right of persons with disabilities to marry and found a family (Article 23, (1)(a)). Further, states parties are bound to ‘take effective action and appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities in all matters relating to marriage, family, parenthood and relationships...’ (Article 23 (1)), and ‘...render appropriate assistance to persons with disabilities in the performance of their child-rearing responsibilities’ (Article 23 (2)). Results This position paper synthesizes messages from research about the challenges that parents labelled with intellectual disability face, and how they can be assisted in their parenting role. In November 2004 the Dutch Presidency of the EU hosted a successful informal ministerial meeting on territorial cohesion. The paper discusses the concept of territorial cohesion and how it could be invoked, among others in relation to the Lisbon Strategy of turning Europe into the most competitive region of sustainable growth globally. This is put against the backdrop of previous Dutch involvement in the preparation of the European Spatial Development Perspective. The paper documents the preparation of the meeting and reports on the meeting itself and the conclusions of the Dutch Presidency. The meeting has generated commitment on the part of various Member States holding the EU Presidency (some of them with a long-standing involvement in such issues) between how and 2007 to pursue a common political agenda in so doing, these Member States signal their insistence in taking an active part in the preparation of any future EU territorial cohesion policy. Introduction: The Fear-Avoidance Components Scale (FACS) has been developed within the framework of the most current fear-avoidance model.1 This study aimed to translate the FACS into Dutch, and to investigate its measurement properties in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Methods: The original English FACS was translated in Dutch through forward-backward translation. The FACS-D's measurement properties were evaluated in 224 persons with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability and measurement error were assessed with the Cronbach's alpha coefficient (a), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest detectable change (SDC). Construct validity (including structural validity and hypothesis testing) was assessed through inter-item correlation analyses, exploratory factor analysis and by examining relationships between the FACS-D and other patient-reported instruments. Results: Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were high (a = 0.92; ICC = 0.92), and the SEM was 5.6 points. Regarding structural validity, low inter-item correlations were found for item 12. A two-factor model was found to best fit the data: one factor covered pain-related cognitions and emotions, the second factor covered items regarding avoidance behaviour. Five out of seven of the a priori-formulated hypotheses were confirmed. Discussion: The FACS-D has good reliability and validity, and can be used to evaluate fear-avoidance in persons with chronic musculoskeletal pain. It's a two-dimensional scale that assesses two clinically relevant constructs of fear-avoidance behaviour. One factor covers pain-related cognitions and emotions, while the other factor covers avoidance behaviour. Introduction: There is growing acknowledgement of the benefits of incorporating a bio-psychosocial model of understanding pain within physical therapist practice1. Consequently this has led to an increasing interest in interventions such Pain neuroscience education (PNE). However, pain management strategies developed by clinicians in one culture may not necessarily be understood, appropriate, or effective in another culture2 Methods: This study is part of a broader research in the development of culturally sensitive pain neuroscience education for the Lebanese population. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to first gain an in-depth understanding of the Lebanese physiotherapists' perceptions towards the management of chronic low back pain as well as the knowledge regarding PNE. A qualitative one-to-one semi-structured interviews with 10 practicing physical therapists were conducted. The transcribed text from the interviews was analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Several themes were generated, identified, and constructed by the researchers: (1) physiotherapists use of a biomechanical approach. (2) Poor knowledge about the bio-psychosocial approach or PNE. (3) Barrier and facilitation for the implementation of PNE. Discussion: The preliminary results showed a limited knowledge of the bio-psychosocial approach, or PNE, and that the Lebanese physical therapist use more a biomechanical approach in the treatment and assessment of people with chronic low back pain. Process evaluation: The results showed that training is needed for physiotherapists to deliver a broader model of care, and that future research should focus on developing a culturally sensitive PNE material. Introduction: Psychosocial factors predict recovery in patients with spinal pain. Several of these factors are modifiable. However, physiotherapists indicate that they do not feel sufficiently equipped to address these factors. We developed an eHealth intervention to support physiotherapists in managing psychosocial factors in patients with spinal pain. This paper describes the protocol for a pragmatic randomised clinical trial which evaluates the effectiveness of this eHealth intervention blended with physiotherapy compared to physiotherapy alone. Methods: Participants with non-specific low back pain and/or neck pain for at least six weeks who also experience psychosocial symptoms will be recruited in a pragmatic multi-centre cluster randomised clinical trial. The experimental intervention consists of physiotherapy blended with six online modules of pain education and behavioural activation. The control intervention consists of usual care physiotherapy. The primary outcomes are disability and perceived effect. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, and at 2, 6 and 12 months after baseline. The results will be analysed using linear mixed models. Results: At this moment, 357 patients were assessed for eligibility and 140 patients are included. Our hypothesis is that the blended intervention is more effective than usual physiotherapy at 12 month follow-up. Process evaluation: Inclusion of participants has proven challenging, we have extended the inclusion phase with 1.5 years and recruited more physiotherapy practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents information regarding the research papers presented in the 9th conference of the European Society for Psychosocial Oncology, Amsterdam, Netherlands. One of the papers studies the motivation for changing or maintaining sun tanning and protection behaviour among adolescents. It was a multiple-case study with semi structured qualitative interviews. The research population were 20 persons by the age of 15 to 27. The data material were divided into three groups according to position in a process of change of behaviour. The aim of this study is to register cancer patients evaluation of their quality of life (QOL) in the last period of their life. This type of registration is considered difficult because of the advanced disease of the patient. Therefore we also tested QOL assessment, performed by the patient's nurse.

This article reports on the 5th International PhD Symposium on Civil Engineering in Delft, The Netherlands. Earlier symposia were held in Budapest (1996, 1998), Vienna (2000) and Munich (2002). The symposium was organized by the Research School Structural Engineering, which is a joint institute for PhD candidates from the Universities of Delft and Eindhoven offering scientific education in the domain of structural engineering and construction. The symposium was visited by 166 authors and 90 guests from 28 countries. About 50% of the papers referred to concrete and its applications; 12% of the papers dealt with structural mechanics, 10% with steel and 10% with soil mechanics.

The article presents a report on the World Association of Public Opinion Research Annual Conference held in The Hague, The Netherlands on September 20-22, 1995, by Miguel Basanez of Mexico. The papers were extremely interesting and enable colleagues to feel proud of the interesting data the profession is yielding. The topics covered the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in child education, hunger and development; the relation of private, government and NGOs organizations, both in the North and in the South, as well as some very vivid illustrations from the work of Novib (one of the most important of Holland NGOs), World View, Pons Sènegal, Africa Harvest Mission, or the Comité Catholique contre la Palm et pour le Developpement. Surely a highlight of the Conference was to bring the Chairman of Greenpeace International, Daryl Upsall, for a joint presentation of their worldwide research on the environment. But these reports were not the only ones that made all of us that engage in either conducting or analyzing surveys feel proud.

The Dutch Society of Periodontology held its 40th Anniversary Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands during April 22-23, 1976. More than 400 participants from 15 countries attended it. The themes of the conference were present knowledge on immunology and periodontal disease, and the future of periodontal therapy, possibilities and limitations. Research and clinical papers were given by Dutch and British lecturers. The society extends a cordial invitation to attend the scientific program of its next annual meeting to be held in Amsterdam in March 1977.
