With increase in the number of photovoltaic system installations, the prospect of voltage deviation from the acceptable range in a distribution system is increasing. Voltage distribution can be controlled using step voltage regulators (SVRs) and static var compensators (SVCs); however, for their coordination, it is necessary to stringently adjust the set value for each distribution line. In this study, a method of applying model predictive control to the coordination between an SVR and an SVC is investigated. Integrated photovoltaic (PV) distribution systems voltage stability is of great significance in supporting all connected equipment smooth functioning in the distribution network. Voltage profile maintenance is one of the challenging tasks in PV integration. To maintain a constant voltage profile to a sensitive load of 22 kVA is the main idea of this study. A single‐phase PV‐integrated distribution system is selected for the study. The novelty is that differential inverters are used for dynamic voltage restorer and distribution static synchronous compensator of the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). Active power decoupling facility is the main advantage using the differential inverter. The research work objective is to synchronise a 10 kW solar PV system to the distribution system using this new UPQC. The research work discusses and derives the most suitable control strategy for the UPQC with battery energy storage system. A 20 kVA UPQC is designed for the PV integration and to increase voltage stability of the distribution system. The frequency, voltage and reactance/resistance ratio of the distribution system is assumed to be constant. A prototype model of differential UPQC is developed. In this study, model predictive control (MPC) with constant switching frequency is proposed for four‐leg distribution static compensator (FL‐DSTATCOM) to compensate the current related power quality issues. MPC techniques having many advantages compared to conventional pulse width modulation and hysteresis control techniques. In MPC, the future behaviour of the controlled variable is predicted using the model of the system and a cost function is formed using reference and predicted variable. MPC for DSTATCOM applications consider the difference between the reference and actual DSTATCOM current as a cost function and selects the switching state which minimises the cost function. However, while using MPC, the switches of DSTATCOM operate in variable switching frequency and sometimes the values are also very high. Due to this reason higher switching losses, unequal stress appear across the inverter switches and it also reduces the lifetime of the switch. Therefore, in this study, the concept of three‐dimensional space vector modulation is adopted to achieve a constant and user‐defined switching frequency MPC for FL‐DSTATCOM to conquer the limitations of conventional variable switching frequency MPC. The variable step size modified least mean square (VSSMLMS) learning algorithm based multifunctional double‐stage grid interactive photovoltaic (PV) system is implemented in this paper which feeds power to the grid and the load, ensures unity power factor operation and compensates reactive power. Along with this, it mitigates high grid neutral current during unbalanced loading condition. This algorithm uses variable step sizes to have a smooth dynamic and steady state performances. The boost converter (booster) is used in the first stage to extract peak power from a PV array using perturb and observe peak power point tracking technique. Next to this, a four leg voltage source converter (VSC) is placed to interlink the solar PV system to the grid and the loads. VSSMLMS‐based control technique is used to filter the fundamental component of load current and hence gate pulses are generated for the four‐leg VSC. This system is simulated in SIMULINK/MATLAB software under several working conditions and the obtained simulation results are validated on a developed laboratory prototype. This study presents the control of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using band‐dependent variable step size (BD‐VSS) individual weighting factor with sign error based adaptive filter for power quality improvement in a weak distribution grid. Here, the proposed algorithm is used for estimation of fundamental active weight components from the distorted load currents in order to generate the reference grid currents to mitigate the grid currents power quality issues. This new control algorithm is proposed for fast and accurate estimation of active weight components with low steady‐state error, without dynamic oscillation at fast convergence speed. Moreover, the frequency locked loop‐double self‐tuning second‐order generalised integrator based voltage filter is used to extract the positive sequence voltages of the distorted grid voltages for estimating the harmonics, and noise‐free voltage unit templates. Therefore, the DSTATCOM with the proposed control algorithm is capable of mitigating the harmonic currents, providing reactive power compensation and operating at unity power factor in a weak distribution grid. In this study, the design and implementation of a new hybrid soft computing control technique called Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation (LMBP)‐based icosϕ is proposed. Two different compensation techniques are evaluated for the performance analysis of three‐phase three‐wire (3P3W) voltage source converter (VSC)‐based DSTATCOM. The first one is the conventional icosϕ control technique whereas the other one is called the LMBP‐based icosϕ control technique. The better power quality of the system is obtained using the proposed control algorithm by maintaining a less voltage across the capacitor as compared to the conventional one. So, the reduction in the size of the DSTATCOM is realised by the LMBP‐based control algorithm. Furthermore, the performance parameters such as load balancing, harmonics elimination, power factor improvement, and voltage regulation are evaluated under both balanced and unbalanced loading conditions as per the IEEE guidelines. This paper presents the voltage‐controlled oscillator (VCO) less phase‐locked loop (PLL)‐based control of voltage source converter. It is used in the distributed power generation system for improved power quality. This control extracts the fundamental component from the sensed load current using three phases to alpha–beta transformation without using VCO, unlike synchronous reference frame–PLL, where fundamental component extraction needs two transformations with the use of VCO. Owing to the absence of VCO in the proposed method, the computational burden of trigonometric operations is very less that results in a faster dynamic response under variable conditions. This characteristic makes it suitable for the distributed power generation system, where fast changes occur frequently. In this study, wind‐based distributed generation system has been taken for study, which comprises of self‐excited induction generator feeding non‐linear load with varying electrical conditions. Using the proposed control, the reactive power compensation, harmonics reduction and load balancing are carried out in the system. In addition to it, neutral current compensation is also accomplished with the help of star–delta transformer connected at the load end. In this study, model predictive control (MPC) of the three‐phase split capacitor (TPSC) distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method is proposed. Power quality improvement using MPC involves the selection of switching state which minimises the difference between reference and actual DSTATCOM currents. However, the limitation of MPC is higher switching frequency and limitation of TPSC DSTATCOM is voltage divergence of dc‐link capacitors. To alleviate these problems, one constraint is to suppress the voltage divergence and the other is to reduce the switching frequency is included in the cost function using weighting factors. Optimal selection of switching state for minimisation of a multi‐constraint cost function is depending on the weighting factor; however, its tuning is a challenging task. In this study, the simplification of weighting factor tuning is achieved using the VIKOR method and it further selects the optimal switching state based on a specific measure of closeness to the ideal solution and multi‐criteria ranking index. The advantages of the proposed work are compensation of power quality issues, balance the dc‐link voltages, switching frequency reduction of inverter and simplification of weighting factor tuning. In this study, a ring‐type multi‐microgrid (MG) system comprising of three MGs with solar energy‐based generation, wind energy‐based generation, and static synchronous compensator as primary sources along with batteries as emergency back‐up is proposed. The voltage‐source converters at the individual MG level serve as the interface between the neighbouring MGs and the grid. An augmented proportional sliding‐mode‐control‐based approach is proposed in the primary control level to improve the power quality of the system during balanced and unbalanced loading conditions. A negative‐sequence controller is also included to mitigate the negative‐sequence voltage from the inverter output voltage. The multi‐MG (MMG) system is capable of operation in grid‐connected, islanded, or interconnected mode with balanced and unbalanced loads. The bidirectional DC ‐DC converters interfacing the batteries at the DC link is controlled by a hysteresis‐function‐based sliding‐mode control. A comparison of the proposed inverter primary control with proportional ‐integral controller, quasi‐proportional ‐resonant controller, and hysteresis‐band current controller is carried out. The comparison reveals that the total harmonic distortion and voltage unbalance factor improves by employing the proposed control when compared with conventional control. The penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) in distribution systems faces many issues due to their output uncertainty resulted from climate conditions. The uncertainty impacts on the voltage fluctuations are reduced by using a proposed bi‐stage method. At first, the system voltage is controlled by determining the optimal setting of voltage‐regulating devices such as voltage regulators, transformer tap changers and static VAR compensator. Then, the dispatchable distributed generation (DDGs) units are accompanied by the voltage regulating devices to achieve more reduction in the voltage fluctuations. In this line, unbalanced backward–forward sweep load flow method is formulated to analyse the unbalanced operation of three‐phase distribution systems. The main objectives of the proposed method are to reduce voltage fluctuations to maintain voltage profile within its permissible limits. In addition, the cat swarm optimiser (CSO) is implemented to obtain the optimal planning of voltage regulating devices and DDGs to achieve the lowest uncertainty influence on the voltage fluctuations. The proposed method is applied to a real unbalanced IEEE 34‐bus distribution test system. The highest capability of CSO algorithm, i.e. CSO provides the highest reduction on the voltage fluctuations, is proven compared with particle swarm optimisation, harmony search and water cycle algorithms. The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) has attracted considerable attention because it can stabilise severe transients that are caused by power system disturbances. This study presents a novel interval type 2 fuzzy control system (IT2‐FCS)‐based controller for the STATCOM to stabilise bus voltages that are caused by faults or forced wind farm outages in a smart grid. Two IT2‐FCSs are presented to tune increments of the proportional integral (PI) controller, which are optimised by the gradient descent method. The IT2 fuzzy rules, involving upper and lower membership functions, result in a fast and stable system response. Since many possible scenarios may arise in the power system, the Taguchi method is used to design experiments using an orthogonal array, in which all scenarios are mutually independent. A distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is implemented at distribution level for overcoming several power quality problems commonly encountered today. Some of these problems considered here deal with issues of harmonics, unbalancing of loads, meeting reactive power demand of the load for improving power factor to unity and regulating the voltage. A new technique is proposed based on affine projection control algorithm and its design and implementation on a shunt compensator are discussed. The proposed control approach estimates the fundamental weight values of load currents. These weights are utilised to compute the magnitude and phase of reference grid currents and consequently gating pulses for three‐phase voltage source converter (VSC). The control approach is based on the convergence of the weighted values and is independent of the property of the input signal. This control approach has characteristic of updating weights on the basis of multiple, delayed input signal vectors. Fast convergence of active and reactive weighted values is added advantage of the proposed control approach with the above‐mentioned characteristics. A working prototype of the DSTATCOM is implemented using three‐phase VSC and digital signal processor (DSP) (dSPACE 1104). Hydro‐Québec has identified wide‐area control system as a key initiative able to significantly increase the voltage stability of its grid. In this context, an innovative project for wide‐area and local voltage control of shunt compensators was initiated. Its main objective is to implement a closed‐loop control system on Hydro‐Québec's network to optimise the reactive power support from the dynamic shunt compensators. The outcome of this project is the 'global and local control of compensators' (GLCCs) system which is based on synchrophasor technology and intelligent electronics devices. Applied to each shunt compensator of Hydro‐Québec's network, this robust voltage control system measures voltage variations in the load area and adjusts the operation set point of each shunt compensator accordingly, thus avoiding voltage collapse resulting from extreme contingencies. The GLCC control solution was intensively tested in simulation using PSSE software. Moreover, a pilot project was commissioned on a test bench replica of the system and also tested in real time using Hydro‐Québec's Hypersim digital simulator. Field tests of the GLCC were conducted on a −230/ + 660 MVars static vars compensator. This manuscript presents a decentralised control scheme for coordinated SVC (CSVC) of large‐scale power networks. In this way, for each area of the power grid, a model predictive controller (MPC) which modifies the set points of reactive power compensators participating in CSVC algorithm is designed. The proposed controller takes into account reactive power limits of these compensation devices. The novelty of the method lies in the consideration of measured reactive power deviation on tie‐lines between neighbouring areas as measured disturbance and compensation of the disturbance by regional MPC controllers. As another contribution of this work, the validation of the proposed algorithm is done in real‐time simulation environment in which the decentralised MPC controllers are run in parallel on separate computational cores. The stability and robustness of the presented algorithm is validated for a large‐scale realistic transmission network with 5000 buses considering standard communication protocols to send and receive the data. Simulation results show that the proposed method can regulate the voltages on the pilot buses at the desired values in the presence of load variations and communication delays. A distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is used for power quality improvement in the distribution system. In the conventional DSTATCOM, the dc voltage is kept constant and it is selected based on rated reactive load. Under light load or reduced load conditions, the compensator works perfectly even though the dc voltage is reduced from its rated value. Maintaining the dc voltage constant under reduced or light load conditions leads to unnecessary voltage stress across the switching devices. Therefore, in this study, a simple dynamic dc voltage regulation is proposed to reduce the voltage stress across switching devices under the reduced load conditions. The proposed algorithm optimises the value of dc voltage based on reactive load without compromising the performance of the DSTATCOM. To validate the proposed method, simulation and experimental studies were carried out on the three‐phase two‐level split‐capacitor DSTATCOM for harmonic mitigation, reactive power compensation and load balancing. Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), a shunt type flexible AC transmission system device, is used to control the voltage at different locations within a power system by absorbing/injecting reactive power. The dynamic control action associated with the operation of STATCOM in both capacitive and inductive modes is the reason for varying system condition and failure of different relaying schemes. Directional relaying is affected by the reactive current contributed by STATCOM in wide range of inductive to capacitive mode of operation. Further, single pole tripping (SPT) condition during STATCOM operation leads to mal‐function of the directional element due to phase change in sequence components of voltage and current. In this study, directional relaying is addressed for different types of faults in the presence of STATCOM connected at different locations during single phase auto reclosing period. Proposed directional relaying technique is based on the phase angle between positive sequence fault and pre‐fault apparent powers. Performance of the proposed scheme has been investigated for different types of faults for single and double circuit lines during SPT using simulated data of different power networks using PSCAD/EMTDC software. This research work introduces a new hybrid technique called quasi‐Newton back‐propagation based i cosϕ control algorithm. Its structure is constructed on the concept of biological features like input neuron, target neuron, weight correction and more attractive due to its parallel computing, learning capability behaviour. Systematic step‐by‐step procedures are represented by mathematical equations in the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The fundamental weighted values of active and reactive power components of load currents are extracted using the proposed control technique to generate the reference source currents. Further, the reference source currents are used to generate switching pulses for voltage source converter (VSC) of the distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM). It is capable enough to perform several functions such as harmonic mitigation, power factor correction, load balancing and voltage regulation which further reduce the DC link voltage across the self‐supported capacitor of the VSC. SUMMARY Recent years, installation of photovoltaic (PV) system is active by the environmental problem and feed in tariff system. Due to PV's output fluctuation, the static var compensator (SVC) made by power electronics technology is planning to install in distribution system. The SVC is expected for maintain the voltage. But SVC differs in a theory of operation of the existing voltage controller load ratio control transformer (LRT) and step voltage regulator (SVR). Because the SVC operation makes the system impedance changes, the existing voltage controller may not operate effectively. In this study, the intelligent-control method which used the radial basis function (RBF) network is proposed. This method can reduce the effects of the SVC operation by including the performance characteristics of SVC in the conventional method. This study investigates the impact of different flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices on critical power quality (PQ) phenomena including voltage sags, harmonics and unbalance from the perspective of both mitigation effect and potential negative impact. The FACTS devices, including static VAR compensator, static compensator (STATCOM) and dynamic voltage restorers, are modelled in commercially available software PowerFactory/DIgSILENT to study their impacts on the critical PQ phenomena. Two control strategies, voltage regulation and reactive power compensation, are considered for STATCOM. For DVR, a PI‐controller is developed for the purpose of voltage sag mitigation. The merit of the proposed controller is presented by the dynamic response of during fault voltage and the capability of post‐fault voltage recovery. The study is carried out on a large‐scale generic distribution network. The impact of various devices on PQ phenomena is assessed using appropriate evaluation methodologies, and the results obtained with and without mitigation are presented and compared using heatmaps. This study proposes a novel method to partition volt/VAR control areas in bulk power systems using spectral clustering. By revealing the internal connectivity structure of the network considering the power‐flow‐based volt/VAR model, an undirected edge‐weighed graph is formed according to the defined electrical distance. On the basis of the graph theory, a novel approach is proposed through appropriate volt/VAR control area number selection, quality factor design, subspace projection, and spectral clustering. The approach is to partition the system into multiple volt/VAR control areas that have strong internal connections but weak external connections. Meanwhile, the proposed approach maintains the reactive power balances in each individual area and the minimum reactive power flow between those areas to facilitate area voltage regulations. Simulation results based on the New England 39 and IEEE‐118 test systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, the Union for the Coordination of the Transmission of Electricity system is further employed to evaluate the performance in practical bulk systems. Aiming at the problems that static var compensator cannot suppress the voltage flicker and the cost of static synchronous compensator is expensive, a three‐layer hybrid reactive power compensation scheme was proposed in this study based on the expert‐decision, differential‐slope voltage regulation, and the expert‐decision subsystem combining with fuzzy self‐tuning proportional–integral (PI) control. By switching in a dynamic load which can always change the bus voltage, the whole system was simulated under the much reactive power shortage and the less shortage. This study presents a hybrid compensator based on distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) and thyristor switched capacitor (TSC), which is intended to continuously compensate reactive power with higher quality and lower cost. The proposed coordination control strategies, in essence, are to continuously assign the reactive power between the DSTATCOM and the TSC. Usually, the fast response characteristic of the DSTATCOM will be lost for that the output of the DSTATCOM is limited by the conventional coordination control strategy. In order to improve the transient performance of hybrid compensator, the fast voltage control strategy is proposed to fast respond to the demand, and reactive power reserve control strategy is proposed to restore the capacity. The operation principle, control algorithm, and design procedure of a prototype are described. In this study, shunt compensation using conventional split capacitor‐based distribution static compensator is presented. A new state feedback‐based switching control is proposed to avoid capacitor voltage divergence and to achieve load compensation, simultaneously. Compared with conventional control used for dc‐link voltage regulation, the proposed control reduces the requirement of proportional–integral controllers. The proposed control also nullifies high‐frequency components from the source and neutral current with minimum total harmonic distortion, provides precise dc‐link voltage regulation, thus, minimising the dc power loss. The reference generation for control variables along with the switching control is discussed. To demonstrate the superiority of aforementioned scheme, three‐phase four‐wire distribution system with shunt compensator under steady state as well as transient condition, is considered. To show the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed control, simulation studies are performed along with the frequency‐response analysis using MATLAB environment. A variable learning rate least mean‐square (LMS) based on hyperbolic tangent function is used to enhance the rate of convergence and to suppress the existing noise in the system for the control of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) consisting of a three‐leg voltage source converter (VSC) with a zig‐zag transformer to eliminate the significant neutral current caused by non‐linear unbalanced loads in a three‐phase four‐wire supply system. Simulation is made for the proposed control algorithm in three‐phase four‐wire DSTATCOM system and its performance is compared with the conventional Adaline‐based LMS control algorithm. It is also shown that the convergence rate of the proposed control algorithm is quite faster in comparison with the conventional control algorithm. A prototype of DSTATCOM is developed and the real‐time implementation of the proposed control algorithm is performed on a digital signal processor. In this study, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) along with a variable frequency drive (VFD), is proposed for voltage and frequency control of a small‐hydro turbine driven self‐excited induction generator (SEIG) system. STATCOM is used to control SEIG terminal voltage through variable reactive power injection. A control algorithm based on adaptive noise cancellation filter is proposed for STATCOM control. A field oriented controlled VFD feeding an induction motor is used to control system frequency. The VFD consumes active power in excess of consumer loads and thereby it regulates the system frequency. The excess power consumed by the VFD is utilised for pumping water to either an overhead storage tank or irrigation purposes. Besides the voltage control as primary objective, the STATCOM also provides harmonic currents compensation and load balancing under unbalanced non‐linear loads. The proposed method of voltage and frequency control using STATCOM‐VFD combination is implemented on a 3.7 kW SEIG and the test results are presented to demonstrate its performance. Flexible AC transmission system devices provide the opportunity to improve the usage of the current transmission facilities by controlling network flows and nodal voltages. The optimal steady‐state settings of these devices can be determined using optimal power flow calculations. However, this requires knowledge of the system parameters, generation settings and loads. A two‐stage regression‐based control scheme is proposed to determine the optimal settings of thyristor‐controlled series compensators (TCSCs) with the objective to optimally utilise the current transmission system in the presence of renewable energy resources. A regression function describing the relationship between a set of key measurements and the optimal device settings is determined in the offline simulation. This function is then used to calculate the optimal device settings by only receiving the information from a limited number of key measurements without solving the OPF problem in the online operation. Studies are carried out with TCSCs in three‐test systems, the IEEE 14‐bus system, a 28‐bus system and the IEEE 118‐bus system. This study presents a secondary voltage control based on an optimisation algorithm to locate the control buses and regulate the voltage. Control buses are the buses where compensators will be installed on these buses to regulate voltage and avoid voltage violations. Firstly, partitioning algorithm using fuzzy C‐means has been implemented on the power network. Partitioning techniques split the power system into regions to avoid the propagation of disturbances between regions by using local controllers. Then, a number of buses are labelled as control buses displaying the critical point for voltage control in each region. The control algorithm is a decentralised controller which tries to eliminate voltage violations in power system resulting from load variations and disturbances. The decentralised controllers are implemented using flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The methodology is applied to the IEEE 118‐bus network. The results show the performance and ability of the partitioning algorithm and bus control selection to regulate the voltage and avoid propagation of disturbances between regions. SUMMARY: The voltage variation in a remote system is large when the system is connected by long‐distance AC cables due to the cable capacitance. In Japan, the longest 54‐km 66‐kV AC submarine cable interconnection between the Kyushu mainland and Goto Islands was commissioned in 2005. It was requested to mitigate the voltage variation caused by switching off and on one circuit of the two circuits in the AC cables when a fault occurs. Since the conventional voltage control methods such as transformer tap changer or shunt capacitor and reactor banks are not sufficient because of their slow response time, a static var compensator (SVC) was installed on the Goto Islands. In such an application, an SVC control method should be developed so as not to override the existing voltage control systems. This paper describes the SVC control method developed for the Goto Islands AC interconnection project, which can be applied to similar situations. The effectiveness of the control method was verified by the results of effective value simulation and of field testing, which was implemented before the SVC was commissioned in 2007. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
