Graphene oxide (GO) was applied as adsorbent to efficiently eliminate the heavy metal ions from wastewater because of its large amount of functional surface groups and high surface areas. However, the contribution of different functional surface groups on the high preconcentration of heavy metal ions to GO is still unclear. Herein the GO was applied as adsorbent for the efficient preconcentration of Co(II) and the effect of functional surface groups on Co(II) removal was studied by batch sorption experiments. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities of Co(II) on GO, NGO, MGO and NMGO were 43.6, 27.3, 23.2 and 14.6 mg/g, respectively. The elimination of Co(II) was significantly influenced by ionic strength and pH, indicated that the interaction mechanism was primarily controlled by strong surface complexation. The DFT calculation further evidenced that the oxygen-containing surface groups could form shorter bond distance with Co(II) ions than the nitrogen-containing functional groups, and the calculated adsorption energies ( E ad ) for GO–COOH–Co (44.05 kcal/mol) and GO–OH–Co (16.44 kcal/mol) were much higher than that for NGO–Co (6.33 kcal/mol). The density of states (DOS) and charge density differences of combined complexes further illustrated the strong surface complexes were formed between Co(II) and the oxygen-containing surface groups of GO surfaces. This work highlighted that the oxygen-containing surface groups played a vital role in the formation of surface complexes with Co(II) on GO, which is crucial for the preparation and application of GO in the radioactive pollution cleanup. The nanoscaled zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported zeolite MCM-41 composites (nZVI/MCM) were synthesized, and applied for the immobilization of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The precise role of MCM-41 and nZVI in the immobilization and reduction of Cr(VI) was characterized using SEM, TEM, HRTEM, HRTEM-EDS, XPS and EXAFS techniques. Comparing to the bare nZVI nanoparticles, the as-synthesized nZVI/MCM composites showed higher efficiency on Cr(VI) immobilization due to the high synergistic effect of Cr(VI) reduction by nZVI and sorption by MCM-41. The morphology and visualizing analysis indicated that nZVI was uniformly distributed on the surfaces of MCM-41, which reduced the aggregation of nZVI apparently and thereby increased the reduction activity. XPS and EXAFS analysis showed that nZVI could promote Cr(VI) reduction into Cr(III), and the sorption and reduction reactions were occurred on bare nZVI. MCM-41 acted as a scavenger for the insoluble products, which could improve the reduction activity of nZVI. The high performance of nZVI/MCM composites showed the promising strategy for the efficient decontamination of Cr(VI) pollution in environmental pollution cleanup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel low-cost, effective and environmental-friendly laminated carbon nitride decorated with polydopamine (PDA) and grafted with polyethyleneimine (PEI) brush ( l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI 3 ) was successfully synthesized and applied as environmental cleaner for removing U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions under various environmental conditions. The adsorption isotherms fitted well by the Langmuir model, suggesting that the removal of U(VI) on l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI 3 was monolayer coverage. The effects of different PEI contents were also investigated and the results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of U(VI) on l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI x decreased at higher content of PEI. Typically, various cations (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) and SO 4 2− could inhibit the adsorption through competitive coordination with U(VI), while CO 3 2− promoted U(VI) sorption owing to the formation of indissolvable complexes. The main driving force between U(VI) and l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI 3 was surface complexation with various functional groups (C C, C O, N C C, and C C or C H) and electrostatic attraction. According to the analysis of EXAFS spectra, the occurrence of U-C and U-U shell revealed that inner-sphere complexation and surface co-precipitation dominated the adsorption of U(VI) on l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI 3 at pH 5.0. The composites were also applied to remove 243 Am(III), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions at different pH values, and similar results were also found for these metal ions. Such a facile synthesis method and efficient removal performance suggested that the l -C 3 N 4 /PDA/PEI 3 materials might be a promising adsorbent for efficient elimination of radionuclides and heavy metal ions in environmental pollution management. Hierarchical silicon dioxide-@-layered double hydroxide (SiO 2 @LDH) nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile in situ co-precipitation method, and characterized by XRD, FESEM, FT-IR and XPS in detail. The sorption of uranium (U(VI)) and methyl orange (MO) on SiO 2 @LDH were investigated as a function of pH, ionic strength, contact time and temperature. The results indicated that the sorption of U(VI) and MO were strongly dependent on pH, and weakly dependent on ionic strength, demonstrating that the interaction of U(VI) was mainly dominated by inner-sphere surface complexation and the sorption of MO was mainly attributed to electrostatic attraction due to the high removal efficiency (∼98% within 4 h for U(VI) ions, and ∼92% within 10 min for MO). The kinetics sorption of U(VI) and MO both followed the pseudo-second-order model well, suggesting that the sorption processes were chemical sorption. The sorption isotherms of U(VI) and MO on SiO 2 @LDH were well fitted by the Langmuir model, and the maximum sorption capacities of SiO 2 @LDH were calculated to be 303.1 mg·g −1 for U(VI) and 166.1 mg·g −1 for MO. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the sorption of U(VI) and MO was spontaneous process. Integrating the experimental result analysis, the hierarchical SiO 2 @LDH may be a promising material for the efficient elimination of radionuclides and dyes from aqueous solutions in natural environmental pollution cleanup. In this paper, nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI), which has great potential in environmental purification is introduced. However, NZVI is easy to accumulate and oxidize, which limits its ability to remove pollutants. Hence several modified NZVI are proposed to overcome its shortcomings in this paper. The heavy metal ions, radionuclides and organic pollutants in the environment are removal by NZVI based materials, and their removal behaviors had been analyzed. This paper also reviews the factors affecting the removal of pollutants by NZVI-based materials, such as pH, ionic strength, contact time, reaction temperature, interfering ions and humic acids. In addition, it is also introduced that NZVI is toxic in the environment, and it also can be recovered and has different removal effects in different water environment. In short, this paper gives a comprehensive summary of NZVI, including its modification methods, pollutants removal, influencing factors of pollutants removal and implication to environment. It provides a strong theoretical basis for the future development of NZVI based materials. A novel noncovalent surface modification of commercial single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was successfully carried out by using ball grinding technology between SWCNTs and mixed dispersants (polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and alkanolamine), affording a highly homogeneous and stable PA-SWCNTs dispersion in water. The homogeneous dispersibility and long storage stability were systematically investigated by transmittance spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, zeta potential analyzer, sedimentation photo and transmittance electron microscopy. Under the optimized conditions, the PA-SWCNTs dispersion modified with 0.7 wt% PVP and 0.25 wt% alkanolamine under the condition of total 6 h ball grinding time using paint shaker can be easily well-dispersed in water and has good storage stability, and no sedimentation is observed more than one month. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify which of the risk factors would contribute to the contralateral fracture in very elderly patients after intramedullary nail fixation., Methods: Clinical data of 227 intertrochanteric fracture patients aged 80 years or older were retrospectively reviewed. Intramedullary nails (IMNs) were used on all of the patients. Potential risk factors for contralateral hip refractures were determined using univariate and logistic regression analyses., Results: Contralateral hip refractures occurred in 11 patients (4.84%). Univariate analysis revealed that age, gender, body mass index, fracture classification, hematocrit, D-dimer, and CRP level were not associated with contralateral fractures ( P  > 0.05). However, neurological diseases, cardiovascular disease, and visual impairments were significantly associated with contralateral fractures ( P  < 0.05). Male infertility is a major and growing health problem with an estimated global prevalence of 4.2%. The current therapy is limited by the unknown etiology of MI, emphasizing the critical requirement forward to a more efficient method or medication. Through thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been shown to be effective in treating MI effectively. However, the components, mechanisms and functions of TCM prescriptions on MI are still obscure, severely limiting its clinical application. In order to discover the molecular mechanism of TCM against MI, our study presents a comprehensive approach integrated data mining, network pharmacology, molecular docking, UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS, and experimental validation. Here, we begin to acquire 289 clinical TCM prescriptions for MI from a TCM hospital's outpatient department. Then, Core Chinese Materia Medica (CCMM) was then retrieved from the TCM Inheritance Support System (TCMISS), which was utilized to discover the underlying rules and connections in clinical prescriptions. After that, 98 CCMM components and 816 MI targets were obtained from ten distinct databases. Additionally, the network pharmacology methods, including network construction, GO and KEGG pathway enrichment, PPI analysis, were utilized to reveal that kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, and beta-sitosterol are the core components of CCMM in treating MI. The mechanisms and functions of CCMM against MI are hormone regulation, anti-apoptosis, anti-oxidant stress, and anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, the strong connections between four core components and six key targets were verified using a molecular docking method. Following that, the core components of the CCMM extract were identified using UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis. Finally, in vivo experiments demonstrated that CCMM and four core components could improve the density, motility, viability of sperm, lecithin corpuscle density, decrease the rate of sperm malformation and testis tissue damage, and regulate the protein expressions of AKT1, MAPK3/1, EGFR, and TNF-α in a mouse model of MI. UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis and in vivo experiments further validated the results of data mining, network pharmacology, and molecular docking. Cold atmospheric plasma has been widely applied in medical treatment clinically, especially skin diseases. However, the mechanism of cold atmospheric plasma on the treatment of skin diseases is still undefined. In this study, dinitrofluorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis mice model was constructed. Cold atmospheric plasma was able to decrease skin cells apoptosis, relieve skin inflammation, ER stress and oxidative stress caused by dinitrofluorobenzene stimulation, which was mediated by cold atmospheric plasma-induced MANF expression. In terms of mechanism, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α expression was increased intracellularly after cold atmospheric plasma treatment, which further bound to the promoter region of manf gene and enhanced MANF transcriptional expression. Arsenic (As) contamination in aqueous solutions has become an increasing public concern due to the immense harm to human health. Herein, bioaccumulation of arsenate (As(V)) by Rhizopus oryzae in aqueous systems was investigated under different environmental conditions, such as different pH's, ionic strengths, mycelia dosages, mycelia growths, and temperatures. The results showed that As(V) could be bioaccumulated efficiently by R. oryzae , and the maximum bioaccumulation capacity of As(V) in R. oryzae was 52.4 mg/g at T = 299 K, which was much higher than that for other biomaterials under similar conditions. R. oryzae generated a higher content of thiol compounds under As(V) stress to immobilize As(V) from aqueous solutions. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy analysis indicated that As(V) was partly reduced to As(III) with increasing contact time, which increased As(V) bioaccumulation in mycelia. In addition, extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that the As-S complex played an important role in As(V) immobilization by mycelia. This study provided an in-depth investigation of intracellular As speciation and coordination in R. oryzae on the molecular scale, which was crucial to understand the interaction mechanisms of As(V) with fungi during environmental cleanup., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

A highly sensitive label-free immunosensor for the detection of kanamycin had been developed using silver hybridized mesoporous ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (Ag@Fe₃O₄ NPs) and thionine mixed graphene sheet (TH-GS). TH was used as an electron transfer mediator. The electrical signal was greatly improved in the presence of GS due to its good electron-transfer ability. With the advantages of large specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity, Ag@Fe₃O₄ NPs could immobilize more antibodies of kanamycin and promote the electron transfer. Cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry were used to characterize the recognition of kanamycin. The proposed immunosensor showed good performances such as low detection limit (15 pg mL⁻¹), wide linear range (from 0.050 to 16 ng mL⁻¹), short analysis time (3 min), high stability, and good selectivity in the detection of kanamycin. Eight low-passage-number Streptococcus pneumoniae clinical isolates, each of a different serotype and a different multilocus sequence type, were obtained from pediatric participants in a pneumococcal vaccine trial. Comparative genomic analyses were performed with these strains and two S. pneumoniae reference strains. Individual genomic libraries were constructed for each of the eight clinical isolates, with an average insert size of approximately 1 kb. A total of 73,728 clones were picked for arraying, providing more than four times genomic coverage per strain. A subset of 4,793 clones were sequenced, for which homology searches revealed that 750 (15.6%) of the sequences were unique with respect to the TIGR4 reference genome and 263 (5.5%) clones were unrelated to any available streptococcal sequence. Hypothetical translations of the open reading frames identified within these novel sequences showed homologies to a variety of proteins, including bacterial virulence factors not previously identified in S. pneumoniae. The distribution and expression patterns of 58 of these novel sequences among the eight clinical isolates were analyzed by PCR- and reverse transcriptase PCR-based analyses, respectively. These unique sequences were nonuniformly distributed among the eight isolates, and transcription of these genes in planktonic cultures was detected in 81% (172/212) of their genic occurrences. All 58 novel sequences were transcribed in one or more of the clinical strains, suggesting that they all correspond to functional genes. Sixty-five percent (38/58) of these sequences were found in 50% or less of the clinical strains, indicating a significant degree of genomic plasticity among natural isolates.
