At the interface of the geography of health and environmental geography, this paper aims to balance an exclusively positive point of view of the forest by focusing on a vector-borne disease transmitted by ticks found in temperate forests. The transformation of our way of life, promoting free-time and leisure activities, have enhanced the attractiveness of spending time in forested areas. For that reason, they are the most popular recreation areas attended by the French, with more than a billion annual visits. For city dwellers in search of nature, forests, especially near cities, are now seen as sources of relaxation and well-being where people draw the energy for their everyday urban life. To better understand the links that these citizens have with the forest, the French National Forestry Office (ONF) led an extensive study of the practices and representations of the forest. Upon completion of the study, two types of representations stand out clearly: the forest as breakout space outside the city, and as a space of sociability and sharing. But this stereotyped or frozen representation of the forest, which revolves around the concepts of wellness and pleasure, maintains a distorted perception of the potential risks incurred by forest users. If users know only the idyllic picture of the forest, it is our responsibility to inform them of these risks. The presence of suitable vector habitats, especially ticks, whose role is significant in the spread of a broad spectrum disease (Lyme borreliosis or Lyme disease), is in fact largely underestimated by forest users who neglect preventive measures to avoid their bite. A main pathology transmitted by ticks, Lyme borreliosis, is transmitted tens of thousands of times each year. Meanwhile, it remains largely unknown to the general public that this disease is becoming more common and widespread in our latitudes, as evidenced by the numerous instances in the literature. In France, some 27 000 new cases are identified each year by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS), an average annual incidence rate estimated at 43 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. This number has almost tripled in ten years, from about 10 000 to 27 000 new cases per year between 2003 and 2013 (InVS, 2013). Well known in rural areas, Lyme borreliosis is an endemic disease in the regions of eastern and central France (figure 1). However, in recent years, the disease tends to be urbanized by approaching large cities (Amat-Roze, 2004). A survey conducted in 2010 in the suburban forest of Senart (25 km south-east of Paris, Île-de-France) has allowed us to know the level of knowledge of forest visitors on Lyme borreliosis and tick populations. It turns out that more than half of respondents have never heard of this disease and that only fifty were able to describe and name its vector. If the majority of people do not associate the disease to the meeting with a tick, many people neglect the basic preventive measures. When an activity brings a user into contact with an infectious tick – that means a tick has bitten him/her and s/he got a disease – the image of the forest changes as a result, in practices and behaviors, as a risk avoidance strategy. The welcoming image of the forest is thus replaced by a risky and insecurity picture. This confirms the findings of a previous study. Indeed, Aurélien Ponce (2011) had collected testimonies from people with Lyme borreliosis (or healed from Lyme borreliosis) to analyze their perceptions and practices of the forest. It appears that all respondents had an idyllic vision of the forest before being bitten by an infective tick. He identifies two types of behavior depending on the severity and persistence of symptoms of the disease. A) persons whose behavior has not (or almost not) changed: these people continue their outings in the forest as before but however are more attentive, especially ride back. It is cured persons or people whose health condition has improved since the first symptoms of the disease; B) persons whose behavior has changed: this translates into a fear of returning to forest and go as before. These findings show the importance of the memory of the risk in the construction process of representation. No improvement in health and security can dispense with these representations, for it is through them that users’ resistance to preventive measures intended for them is expressed. If these elements enable better targeting of policy instruments to promote effective information to the population, this paper opens a reflection on communication strategies for a particular public: the forest users.

Abstract: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) represent globally 10% of human births and their major complication, preeclampsia, 3 to 5%. The etiology of these HDP remains still uncertain, however major advances have been made these last 25 years. The Sixth International Workshop on Reproductive Immunology, Immunological Tolerance and Immunology of Preeclampsia 2008 celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Reunion-island (French overseas Department in the Indian Ocean). Over this decade, these six workshops have contributed extensively to immunological, epidemiological, anthropological and even vascular debates. The defect of trophoblastic invasion encountered in preeclampsia, intra-uterine growth retardation and to some extend also preterm labour has been understood only at the end of the 1970''s. On the other hand, clinical and epidemiological findings at the end of the 20th century permitted to apprehend that “preeclampsia disease of primiparae” may in fact well be the disease of first pregnancies at the level of human couples. Among the important advances, immunology of reproduction is certainly the topic where knowledge has literally exploded in the last decade. This paper relates some major steps in comprehension of this disease and focuses on the interest to follow these immunological works and their new concepts. It seems, at the beginning of the 21st century, that we are possibly closer than ever to understand the etiology of this obstetrical enigma. In this quest, the immunology of reproduction will certainly come out as one of the main players. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The information provided by pollen counts cannot be ignored by allergists and allergic individuals, but the divergence sometimes observed with clinical observations has led the réseau national de la surveillance aérobiologique (RNSA) to initiate the monitoring network of allergens by immunosampling (Monalisa) project. Moreover, some recent papers has shown the influence of pollution in the region and even of the year on the content in pollen allergens, particularly that of birch pollen. Thus, the goal of the Monalisa project was to set up a measuring system based on an immunological method that would result in validation of this new way of measuring airborne pollen counts. This European Life Environment project includes nine partners: Bertin Technologies (France), RNSA (France), NPARU (England), UCO (Spain), UTU (Finland), UAM (Poland), UEVORA (Portugal), AIA (Italy), and Meteoswiss (Switzerland). The results obtained during the 2006 season and then in the 2007 campaign, after modifications made in the sampler, were not very good. The principal results concern the measurement of birch and olive allergens, captured essentially in the prepollination period and sometimes in the postpollination period. Detection of these allergens may be due either to their presence on submicroscopic particles emitted independently of pollination, these allergens cross-reacting with birch and olive allergens. The difficulties encountered in this study lead us to say that pollen counts, phenological observations and clinical data are still the best way to assess the effects of airborne pollen. International audience; Our research addresses an increasing interest of companies in the adolescent target group. This interest can be explained by a combination of three factors: increasing purchase potential by teenagers, strong influence on other family members and the importance of identity construction at this age. As female teenagers as a target group are very promising, companies have to deal with two challenges: first, the volatility in purchase behaviour at this young age, and, second, a high influence of members of the teenager’s peer group on the purchase decision. Furthermore, many consumer choices result from the desire to match the consumer’s identity with their chosen brands to positively influence their identity through the chosen brand. However, a tension might exist between motives of consumer’s consumption for themselves and for members of their peer group as consumers want to match both motives. To derive managerial decisions for this target group it is highly important to gain knowledge on which factors impact the construct of social identity. Against the existing literature on the social identity construct this paper fills a research gap by applying a quantitative approach. Based on the paradigm of Churchill (1979) this paper is first to develop a measurement scale of social identity for female teenagers as an important target group. Finally, we are able to prove the validity and reliability of this new measurement scale based on a sample of 1,028 female teenagers. Furthermore, by applying this new measurement scale to luxury brands we are able to derive highly managerial relevant implications based on the identification of four different profiles of female teenagers.; Notre recherche résulte d’un constat de l’existence d’un succès grandissant de l’intérêt des entreprises pour la cible adolescente.

- Abstract

In Sweden, since the 1990s, various reforms have sought to transfer hospital care to ambulatory care in primary care centers and to home care. In 2010, a reform of the primary health care system generalized the possibility for swedes to choose the primary care center where to be treated. The reform also gave caregivers in primary health the free choice of location of their establishments on the territory. Since this reform there is a competition between health care providers, as the payment received by the primary care centers depends on the number of patients and the on their profiles. Sweden has a low population density, especially in its northern part (less than two inhabitants per square kilometer in some territories) and the population is aging, even from a European perspective. In northern municipalities, between 25 and 30 per cent of the population is over 65 and in some municipalities more than 10 per cent of the population is 80 years old or more. One of the challenges of the Swedish health system is to maintain or even improve access to care in northern areas where needs are high, due to an elderly population prone to chronic diseases. In order to promote retention or installation of centers in low-density areas, which are not attractive to healthcare institutions despite significant care needs, a financial compensation system was implemented with the reform. The health policy is based on a payment by capitation, where the compensation varies according to the profiles and needs of the populations and the characteristics of the territories. Despite this arrangement, many territories fail to attract new centers, which partly explains why other strategies have been developed to reduce inequalities between territories in terms of access to care. These include a set of solutions that challenge the very definition of accessibility to care, disconnecting the place of care and caregiver, with the development of remote consultations and monitoring. The current paper examines the consequences of the primary health care reform and the development of e-health care on geographic accessibility to care. The systematic search for equity in access to health care and effectiveness of the health care system is clearly a response to current trends of population aging and stagnating budgets. A specific focus on the sparsely populated county of Västerbotten reveals a development strategy of innovative remote health care solutions. Since 2013, four consultation rooms have been equipped with videoconferencing equipment and measuring instruments and offers thus remote consultations and new virtual care centers are under implementation. The presence of virtual health care centers in the county of Västerbotten significantly reduces the distance between the inhabitants and the centers allowing access to a consultation with a specialist physician (figure 1). For example, without the existing and planned virtual centers, 10 per cent of the population is located more than 100 kilometers from a county hospital. The spatially regular distribution of the future virtual centers in the hinterland clearly improves the access to a specialist physician, since “only” 4.6 per cent would live more than 100 kilometers from one of the current or planned virtual health centers. The provision of remote care and on-site facilities for a virtual consultation with a medical specialist can replace a round trip to the regional hospital in Umeå. These centers therefore improve the situation in strict terms of accessibility to specialist and to primary care, when the virtual health room is spatially disconnected from a primary health center like the virtual health room in Slussfors (figure1). The aim of the development of remote monitoring, consultation and care centers is not to replace traditional care with the physical presence of a physician, but to supplement the service of traditional primary or specialist care units. There are, however understandable reservations about the extent to which particularly vulnerable and isolated populations who do not readily consult physicians for cultural, social or health-related reason might be disadvantaged by the development of remote health care.

This paper questions health system organization, and especially first line care, given the context of occupation and fragmentation of the Palestinian territory. It asks whether the geopolitical context is the source of specific changes? We studied the activities of general practitioners (GPs) in the West Bank by identifying external factors which influence their practice. Methods A field survey (3-16 March and 01 July-31 August 2014) employed a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with GPs. Physicians had to have obtained the Bachelor Degree of Medicine to practice medicine in Palestine (no family medicine speciality is required). They had to work in primary health care and the four main types of health provider were represented (Ministry of Health, UNRWA, NGOs and the private sector). Various health actors were also interviewed. Data analysis (figure 1) was based on the method described by Miles and Huberman (2003). In total, 35 interviews were conducted, 11 during the first period of the field survey and 24 during the second period. 23 GPs were interviewed (1 GP was interviewed at each period). The mains geographical and demographic characteristics of their places of practice are set out in the table I. Their places of exercise are represented on the map 1 Results Palestinian GPs integrate the psychological and environmental aspects of their patients’ experience. They provide joint missions: community-based and first line care, resolution of all undifferentiated health problems, prevention, and health education. The occupation of the territory isolates populations and prevents any territorial continuity. The governorates are fragmented and the health care system cannot develop homogeneously on the territory since institutions can be implanted only in area A or B defined by the Oslo Accords (urban hubs and their close suburbs). The geopolitical, economic and structural context of Palestine impacts their professional practice: physicians are isolated on the territory and in the health system. Health resources are difficult to access: they are not available in all governorates and the coordination between health providers is insufficient to promote community-based care. Primary care physicians respond with difficulty to the health problems of Palestinians given their limited use collective and complementary practices and their missing link with the secondary sector (which exists but is hardly accessible). The permanence and continuity of care are unpredictable as they depend on physicians and patients travelling to facilities; they are often forced by the checkpoints regime and other obstruction means on Palestinian roads. The comings and goings of patients from one health care provider to another on the territory also complicate their aftercare in the long term and the continuity of care. The instability of the situation, at the root of armed conflicts or altercations, also brings GPs to heal wounds “of war”. Discussion and Conclusion Our study shows that GPs practice is strongly constrained by the Palestinian geopolitical context and the health care access is inseparable from the territorial issue. Since 2014, family medicine is growing in Palestine with the support of WHO and other foreign institutions. A homogeneous discipline in primary care, would promote a fair access to quality health care for Palestinians. The development of the discipline should take into account the practice conditions of GPs in order to settle in primary care. The occupation of the territory, the instability of the situation and the absence of a Palestinian state are among the factors behind a specific type of practice of family medicine in this part of the world.

While A. Testart attempted to construct a dialogue with specialists of the Paleolithic period many times, only a few of them responded. In this paper, we try to continue these exchanges by responding to A. Testart's invitation: organize the few archeological observations that would potentially allow us to reconstruct social facts, with the objective to understand the evolution of societies in the very long term. We examine here the end of the Late Paleolithic in Western Europe, from the Magdalenian to the Mesolithic, a crucial time during which A. Testart suggested placing the shift from hunter-gatherers of type A (with lifelong obligations to the mother-in-law) to hunter-gatherers of type B (with temporary service to the father-in-law). In the present state of knowledge, it is difficult to fit the archeological data from this period with Testart's nonetheless attractive model. This pushes us to widen our geographical and chronological focus and look for other moments of technical—and thus maybe social—shift among prehistoric hunter-gatherers., Il y eut de la part d'A.

The company’s brand image and its reputation go through several channels of communication. The reputation of a brand or a person is no longer done by traditional wordof-mouth only, it is also done online. And it is called the “e-reputation”The purpose of this paper is to answer the following questions : Does the reputation of the company impact the attitude of potential candidates ? Can it also influence the attractiveness of the company ? To do this, we developed a research model that we tested with a sample of 370 future graduates in management studies. This research yields two interesting results. The reputation of the company presents as two-dimensional : the first dimension relates to e-reputation driven by social networks and the Internet and the traditional reputation conveyed by traditional channels of communication such as wordof-mouth. The results also show that the e-reputation of the company (on social networks and Internet) significantly impacts the overall attitude towards the company rather than its attractiveness as an employer. The impact of classical reputation on the attractiveness of the company as an employer is stronger compared to the e-reputation impact.; L’image de marque de l’entreprise ainsi que sa réputation passent par plusieurs canaux de communication.

International audience; Role of chemokines in the development of age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the main cause of irreversible blindness in industrialized nations. Recent research has emphasized the importance of inflam-matory processes in pathogenesis of this disease. Chemotactic cytokines also named chemokines are important mediators of inflammation and might have a role in development of this disease. They appear to be crucial in the subretinal microglia / macrophage accumulation observed in AMD and may participate in the development of retinal degeneration and in choroidal neovascularization. This paper reviews the possible implication of chemokines in the development of AMD.; La dégénérescence maculaire liéeà l'âge (DMLA) est la principale cause de cécité irréversible dans les pays industrialisés.

This paper presents the results of recovering horse oocytes by aspiration and maturation in vitro for 24, 30, 36 or 42 h. A total of 522 oocytes were recovered from 221 ovaries (2.4 per ovary) and 271 oocytes (51.9%) were selected for in vitro maturation (IVM). Oocytes were cultured in maturation medium (TCM 199 + estrus cow serum [ECS] + follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] + 17 beta-estradiol + gentamycin). One hundred and seventy oocytes were cytogenetically analysed (68.3%). Cytogenetic analysis showed that the stage of maturation (first telophase-TI or second metaphase-MII) for fertilization was achieved in 42.2% of oocytes after 24 h, 70.4% of oocytes after 30 h, 75.0% of oocytes after 36 h and 74.4% of oocytes after 42 h of in vitro maturation.

The spread of HIV infection into leishmaniasis endemic areas has increased the incidence of immunosupressed patients with kala-azar in Portugal. The dermotropic zymodeme MON-24 of Leishmania infantum has been already isolated from a Portuguese AIDS patient, as in some other Mediterranean countries. In this paper we report the isolation of L. donovani MON-18 from a drug addicted Portuguese patient with clinical visceral leishmaniasis and AIDS, that suggests a mechanically transmitted infection by the use of a shared needle or syringe. publishersversion published

This paper reports a statistical study of mortality in about 2 500 premature mice at birth and during neonatal development. The premature mice were removed by caesarean section and reanimated for 30 min.; surviving mice as well as newborns delivered vaginally on day 20 of pregnancy (control mice) were raised from birth to day 20 by nursing mothers spontaneously delivered at the same time. The mortality rate in the premature mice and control newborns was estimated immediately after birth by caesarean section and 30 min. after reanimation or parturition, 6 h after birth and at 9 h every day from neonatal days 2 to 20. The caesarean section did not cause mortality. The chances of the survival of premature mice at birth depended on both gestational age and birth weight. Premature mice could not survive if their gestational age was less than 19 days and their birth weight less than 33% of that of newborn mice at term. There was no relationship between mortality and the number of newborns per litter. Two types of mortality were observed in premature mice, mortality at reanimation and breeding mortality. Mortality at reanimation was about 13%; breeding mortality, occurring only during the first 3 neonatal days, was of two types: primary neonatal mortality (10.9%), occurring from the end of reanimation up to 6 h after birth, and secondary neonatal mortality (6.9%) which appeared from days 2 to 3. The role of some factors causing mortality has been discussed.

To get out of despair to survive and fight the constant opposition to recognize the right to use French at school and at church, those men decided to use the tools used by their adversaries. They opted for a new leadership, a discret action in the frame of a secret society with an authoritarian superior council, the chancellerie, and local cells, the commanderies. Their first revendications were for use of French, just representation in civil, politic and religious fields, in civil service, and also in school board, and University of Ottawa. The action of Ordre, will soon spread among Canada français, as a whole.

This paper analyzes L’Entraide missionnaire from the perspective of its networks which became international over the course of the 1960s. This internationalization was most visible in the collaborations established with Third world theologians and practitioners. From 1968 onwards, L’Entraide radically changed its worldview, taking sides with the poor and marginalized. Notions like consciousness-raising, dialogue, inculturation, and liberation were at the heart of the organization’s activities hundreds of Quebecois committed to sociopolitical change and community organizations attended. Thus, L’Entraide acted as a catalyst for Quebecois to become familiar with different schools of thought and practices, but also to integrate these new ways of thinking collectively about the contemporary world.

Nos recherches permettent de découvrir un organisme plus festif et plus récréatif que ce que l’on a pu supposer jusqu’à maintenant., The purpose of this article is to shed light on the more playful dimension of the Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne-française (ACJC) by analysing activities of the Langevin Circle. The Langevin Circle was established in 1910 in the parish of La Nativité, in Hochelaga (Montreal, Quebec). While belonging to the very militant and combatant ACJC, its activities left some room for moments of leisure and fun. Its members expressed both a desire for ideological purity and a playful spirit that is characteristic of youth. In order to better highlight these two facets, the present paper focuses on the first ten years of the circle's existence (1910-1920), since our interpretations can rely on information garnered from the circle's magazine, La Semence, as well ACJC archives. Our research uncovers an organization that was more festive and recreational than has been assumed to date.

This paper deals with the relative significance given to the religious founding figures of Montreal and of Nouvelle-France in general, as well as what sort of representations are proposed of these figures, in the teaching books of Quebec’s Ethics and Religious Culture Program in those chapters where religious heritage is addressed. We shall try to identify the essential qualities of the memory that is transmitted to today’s young generations of the religious project which was that of Quebec’s original settlers, in today’s profondly secularized Quebec society, as well as to what extent the deep motivations driving these founding figures can be understood today.

When Bishop Charbonneau arrived in Montréal, the situation of immigration was a unique occasion to express his social convictions and his open mind on matters of housing and catholic action network. His pragmatic attitude was different from the ideological attitude of traditional nationalists. This paper first reviews how perspectives adopted on immigration had changed since the economic crisis of 1929, leading Charbonneau and the catholic action movements to pay attention to the concrete and human aspects of housing. Meanwhile, a real fight of power took place between the network of specialised movements of catholic action, approved by the archbishop, and more nationalistic associations like Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne (ACJC), under Jesuit leadership since the beginning of the 20th century.

The first Inuit catechisms were organized by the Wesleyan and the C.M.S. missionaries in Fort George. Following this experience, this paper sheds light on both the C.M.S. and the Oblate missionaries methods of teaching catechism. The comparison makes clear that many differences can be noticed, the Anglican missionaries promoting a scriptural and indirect catechism while the Oblates granted a privilege to a verbal and direct catechism. However, several similarities can also be brought out: thorough understanding of the inuktitut language, common promotion of the prayer as a medium of intercession, common use of music and image. All these elements played a major part in building a new Christian imaginary among the Inuit.

This paper focuses on the early stages of the Missionary Sisters of our Lady of Africa (White Sisters), from the point of view of women. From a feminist and gender studies perspective, this study illustrates how socio-ecclesial roles assigned to women give them (or not) a peculiar character, in the context of the foundation of a missionary institute. The relations of these women with their founder, as well as with the White Fathers, who also bear the weight of socio-ecclesial roles imposed on them as men, are analysed. Concepts of authority and obedience are considered as well as the effects of the shock from the missionary experience itself.

This paper examines three points related to this question: first, a critical look at two books by Benoît Lacroix, whose titles lead us to expect mistakenly that the religious experience of women shall be treated; second, the definition of gender, as a historical category, laid out by Joan W. Scott's theories; third, a short survey of recent historical books on Quebec religious history, illustrating the shortcomings in our insight of the past created by the absence of the gender perspective.

The Catholic Church’s contributions to French language minority groups throughout North America are numerous, but to what extent has the Church left its mark on these groups’ historic accounts? This paper investigates the clergy’s pioneering role in the emergence of a French-Canadian historic discourse in northern Ontario, paying special attention to its involvement with the newly-founded Société historique du Nouvel Ontario in 1942. The publications of two of its prominent members, Lorenzo Cadieux and Stéphane Côté, will be examined in depth. By relating their historical accounts to the broader regional historiography, we hope to gain a better understanding of the emergence, in the society’s early years, of an identity discourse firmly rooted in the past.

Its authors belong to the circle of Catholic intellectuals critical of the Church’s institutional presence in Quebec in the 1950s and 1960s. The present article seeks to present their analysis of Quebec’s religious decline and highlights how their theological ideas influence their stance in favour of the secularization of the province’s public institutions. Through this, it will become evident that secularization is Maintenant’s answer to the religious crisis of the 1960s and 1970s; its authors see it as the only way forward for Catholicism in the modern age.

In this paper, the fabric is seen as an economic agent managing monies received by the parish. It spends these on liturgical services, on maintaining and improving the religious assets which are related. It can also invest in other sectors of cultural life, however, to pastoral and ecclesial concerns. Thus, like a small business, it contributes to the economic life of the microcosm to which it belongs.

In the history of Quebec's school system, some educational projects attempted to take up the challenges of industrialization, urbanization and modernity of society. The Christian Brothers' educational project is one of these. This paper examines it's realization in the city of Quebec. From the second half of the 19th century to the 1940's, this educational initiative has been carried out with much controversy.

During the sixties, the Diocese of Quebec proceeded with a large missionary operation among its population, called "Grandes Missions". The main inspiration came both from the Roman Catholic tradition of internal missions and the French post-war experience of missioning rural and proletarian populations. While reminding the intellectual context of the Quebec experience, the paper points out the confrontation of various influences, between the specific concern of the missions and the attitudes of mind of that time, including the context of conciliar reforms.

This paper analyses moral attitudes of catholic priests and laymen toward marital sexual practice, in Montréal, in the sixties essentially. It considers the diversity of priest behaviours as well as the ways some of them compromised with the rigidity the law, as strategies to reduce moral tensions among married couples and to keep up religious practice. It also discusses means used by the faithful to get round the moral law and to baffle their confessor. It shows that right and wrong in that kind of moral issues was not delimitated by a clear cut division, and that room was left for negotiation between priests and faithful.

Through the concept of popular religion, this paper highlights the essential contribution of secular subjects for the Catholic education of Quebec’s prospective elites. By a careful analysis of Catholic contents from 170 textbooks, we will show that all education contributes to the moulding of model, pious and informed Catholic elites. Thus, the Catholic school of the turn of XXth century reconciles a type of popular religion with a decidedly elite teaching. We will argue that the results of this training play a decisive role in the sustainability authority of Catholicism throughout much of the XIXth and XXth centuries.

This paper identifies several impacts cultural transfers operated by Quebec missionaries from 1945 onwards had on their society and Church of origin, especially with respect to recent immigration. More specifically, it deals with the work achieved by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) towards African immigrants through the Afrika Centre they found in Montreal in 1989. This case study exemplifies the dynamic relations that exist between Quebec missionary experience and the challenges posed to socio-ecclesial integration by a growing ethnocultural diversification of the Catholic population in Quebec.

Il semble dès lors juste de parler d’une censure totale, c’est-à-dire d’une censure qui gouverne l’esprit avant la lettre., Numerous instances of clerical censorship conclusively demonstrate that, at the turn of the 20th century, the Roman clergy were determined to control literary output. But it does seem rather hazardous to speak of censorship — even less total censorship — as still being exercised by the clergy during the years 1920-1929, since not a single overt act of censorship took place during the ten-year span. All the same, we must not conclude that censorship didn't exist any more. As this paper will show, a new form of censorship was instituted, of an altogether more pervasive kind. It aimed at homogenizing the productions of the creative spirit, thereby prompting the rise of a literature singularly lacking in variety, and whose very sameness was calculated to stifle debate. We cannot be far wrong in regarding this censorship as total, since it sought dominion over the mind rather than the printed page.
