In its theoretical dimension, this thesis aims to question the theoretical implications of developing a sociological understanding of the notion of an « economic alternative ». The answer to this question is provided by a sociology of knowledge of the economy perspective. Such perspective enjoins to understand economic life as comprised of multiple social forms of knowledge, articulated with each other and anchored in a given space’s sociohistorical peculiarities. This is offers a theoretical framework for understanding the economy as a social phenomenon producing knowledge as much as it is constructed through such knowledge. The empirical dimension of the thesis is then guided by this perspective. With an ethnographic approach, it studies non-profit food organisations of the Montreal district of Point-Saint-Charles. The inquiry combines the analysis of data stemming from several hundreds of hours of participant and non-participant observation, around thirty interviews with organization personnel, volunteers, members using the organizations’ food services, district’s residents, as well as various types of documents. The analysis identifies multiple social forms of knowledge, their social foundations, the ways in which the partake in constructing the investigated organizations as well as the ways in which they articulate with each other. In short, it describes the different ways in which « alternative » (non-profit) food organizations emerge, persist and transform. In doing so, it also opens up to insights regarding future possibilities regarding the generalization of an alternative form of food economy. While this study may serve to illustrate and support the theoretical foundations being mobilized, it is also heuristically and socially relevant in that it provides sociographic documentation of lived experiences, practices and various understandings of the economy coexisting in the investigated milieu.

The paper shows the development of a myth about Torockó in the literary works (fiction and scientific literature as well). The analysis follows the myth from its foundation in the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. Finally, the paper analyses the symbolic language of monument space as well. Our conclusion is that myth can be interpreted as the basis of cultural heritage space emerging after 1990. The myth fills up the architectural environments with social contents (narratives, memorial images etc.). In fact, the discourses react on the architectural forms as well. The founders of Torockó myth (e.g. Mór Jókai, Balázs Orbán) in the 19th century used a romantic language. They created a picture which influences the view about Torockó until today (for example “lunar landscape”). It is also important to mention that Torockó was a significant site on the “national map” of Hungary. After 1920, as part of Romania, Torockó became the symbol of minority life and the cultural exchange between Hungarians, Germans and Romanians (see the idea of “Transylvanism”). However, the authors continued the tradition of romantic language. Only the third generation – working during the communist dictatorship in the second half of 20th century – changed the language tools. They revised some basic elements of Torockó’s history (like the German origin, see by Zsigmond Jakó). The effect of their work is interesting in the sense that it has not decreased, but strengthened the myth. Finally, the paper shows the heritage transformations of the past two decades from the special aspect of the Torockó myth. This means an understanding of how the heritage protection displays the myth, as well as how the heritage space contributes to maintaining the myth. From this point of view, is important to interpret the reconstruction of mining houses of 17-18th centuries as an act remembering on myth of “freedom”; the renewing of houses from period 1860-1890 as a representation of myth of “German origin”, and so on. Thus, the monument protection of townscape is not only an architectural intervention but in the same time a creation of space of cultural heritage and a social fact of collective memory and historical identity.

This paper proposes a psychoanalytical interpretation of Karl Mannheim’s main work, Ideology and Utopia. Our hypothesis is that a kind of “socio-pathology” that is implicit in Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge can be put explicit by the interpretation of his conception of false consciousness as a synthesis of the eponym concept of Georg Lukács and of the Freudian notion of illusion. We than show that the often pointed aporetic character of Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge can be outrun if its key element, the freely attached intellectual, is conceived of by analogy with the position of the Ego in Freud’s second topic, defined by its specific relation to the Id, the Superego (considered respectively as the analogues of utopian desire and ideology) and “reality”.

However, they follow different logics: identities reproduce the differences that arise from subjective perceptions and confrontations of interests, while knowledge rests on ideals of universality and of objective reality. Through an extensive review of the literature, this thesis examines the growing permeability between identities and knowledge that has arisen from a recent, essentialized form of positioning we call "positionality". In particular, we question this contemporary ideological form in order to understand the origins of such essentialized identity positions as well as their consequences for both the development and mediation of knowledge. We establish that positionality relies on a constructivist approach to truth and power regimes as well as on partisan readings of critical theory’s legacies. We also highlight the political environment of the “post-truth era,” characterized by a devaluation of facts and the challenging of traditional epistemic authorities. Finally, we argue that the development of positionality, hastened by the post-truth era, reinforces neoliberal appropriation, or privatization, of knowledge heretofore understood as a public good. The topics addressed in this thesis lead us to think that the essentialization of identity positioning has moved from a strictly epistemological question to one concerning the accumulation and exclusive ownership of the means of knowledge production.

Maruyama Masao wrote his most politically engaged texts between 1946 and 1951. "en a 30-year-old scholar and recently returned soldier, he was popular with readers who had also fought in the war. Yet he never enjoyed the same level of influence as his more experienced peers in the intellectual community. He retired from the public debate in 1952 due to ill health and, except for a short period around 1960 when a new Japan-United States security treaty was signed, devoted himself to academic pursuits. Maruyama's fragmentary statements were widely reported and collections of his writings became bestsellers. He came to be seen, somewhat erroneously, as the representative thinker of Japan's postwar democracy. Ever since, the Maruyama legend has been the focus of both criticism and praise, going beyond his original intentions. Using an approach borrowed from the sociology of knowledge, this paper seeks to examine the issues of social cognition and political engagement in his work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research in the history of science and the sociology of knowledge, where science is understood as knowledge in circulation, has called attention to the importance of studying the translation of scientific works, which involves not only the social circumstances of their production but also how these works are received. The testimony presented here was given by the translators of the Portuguese version of Ludwik Fleck's Entstehung und Entwicklung einer wissenschaftlichen Tatsache (Genesis and development of a scientific fact), a work that probably influenced Thomas Kuhn's now classic The structure of scientific revolutions. Our goal is to offer resources for understanding Fleck's importance in Brazilian studies on the circulation of scientific knowledge.

In this article we realize a critical approach to the good savage myth as a cognitive distortion, paradigmatically represented by a Neil Young´s musical composition on Hernan Cortez figure. We use as a tool to do that criticism some relevant contributions from philosophy, social psychology and sociology of knowledge, specially that one elaborated by P.L. Berger. It’s shown myth inconsistence and their ideological supports and utilities and we conclude that one of the main functions of sociology is to unmask both descriptions and explanations of social world.

This paper raises the question of the character of Bernstein's theory. It draws upon a set of key concepts elaborated in some of his later papers, though we suggest that it is possible to discern the origins of these ideas in much earlier work. In the first section Bernstein's diagnosis of the sociology of education as a horizontal knowledge structure with a weak grammar is discussed and an apparent paradox identified: if the sociology of education has this form, how can we account for Bernstein's own theory? The remainder of the paper uses the case of Bernstein's own work as a way of exploring the conditions for knowledge growth in sociology as a vertical knowledge structure with a strong grammar.

The rise of interdisciplinary studies at the end of the 20th century took the form of a critical movement which arose as a reaction to subspecialisation and reflects a remarkable reform in the history of thought which, despite being slow and discrete, is nevertheless still active. The principal objective of this dissertation is to argue for the construction of a critical epistemology in interdisciplinary research oriented towards action. This project is justified in the first part of the work by considering the problem which constitutes the heart of this intellectual exercise, that is, the lack of a theoretical discussion capable of articulating a fecund relationship with the “mature” discipline—a reflection capable of integrating the second epistemological revolution of the 20th century and consequently justifying, in a coherent manner, recourse to interdisciplinarity (Lemay, 2017). The first part of the dissertation, devoted to deconstructionism, explores these discursive phenomena and their current state of research (Chapters 1 and 2). It also aims to understand the diversity and scope of the epistemological debates that animated the 20th century (Chapter 3). Following the deconstructionist review, the discussion adopts a constructive character, where considerations foundational to the development of a theoretical apparatus highlight clearly the intellectual importance of the deliberations of the Frankfurt School for the field of interdisciplinary studies (Chapter 4). The second part reaches its peak in the construction of a critical epistemology for interdisciplinary research in social action, which could serve as an epistemological model for praxeology and the social sciences in general (Chapter 5). This model is based on four pillars or components, which characterize interdisciplinary thought as an original and alternative mode for the production of knowledge: the interpersonal, the transformative, the transversal, and the intercultural. Finally, in the third part, I propose two examples where interdisciplinary epistemology can be applied, one related to artificial intelligence and the other to personalized medicine; two new fields born at the crossings of many paths and whose application increasingly affects our daily lives (Chapters 6 and 7). Three conclusions emerge from this discussion: interdisciplinary thought can be qualified as (i) an approach that is capable of handling the complexities of contemporary problems; (ii) as a resurgence of Critical Theory; and (iii) as the root and the application ground of new sciences linked to the development of Big Data and discoveries in the omic sciences.

- Author

partnership ,Quebec ,university ,epistemology ,sociology of knowledge ,Sociology (General) ,HM401-1281 - Abstract
This article firstly makes an effort to classify various practices taking place in Québec universities under the label of research in partnership. Without being the result of a systematic investigation, it examines a diversity of disciplines and research areas in the social sciences. A polarity seems to emerge out of these practices, apart from a common view on partnership: one that leans towards a « vision » of research as emancipatory while the other sees it as a tool for social innovation. The second part of the article singles out three challenges evolving from the growing interest in research in partnership within academia. These are: a marked tension with so-called “conventional” research practices, the issue of demarcation between social science and other forms of knowledge, finally questions resorting to social research ethics nowadays.

In this article we examine the status and the role of interpretation in the measurement process, from the point of view of mixed methods. Starting with Abraham Kaplan’s definition of “measurement as the assignment of numbers to objects (or events or situations) in accord with some rule defining properties that can be quantified”, we state that measurement is produced through a set of different interpretations at various moments during the research process. It cannot be seen only as a reduction of complexity and a quantification of reality since it is also a way of restoring complexity and quality. Measurement must be understood in relation with all the other knowledge operations.

To describe, understand, and explain, following the formula which expresses the purpose of the field of sociology, is here illustrated principally through the theories and approach of Pierre Bourdieu. On this basis, the article seeks to clarify the issues that these three key words raise in the process of developing sociological knowledge (the latter conceived of as the knowledge of how knowledge is constructed). In this perspective, the object of analysis appears to be the central epistemological opposition in Sociology constituted by the construction of theories on one hand and their explanation on the other.

The article discusses the heuristic concept of "temporalization" in the writings of social philosopher Reinhart Koselleck. It describes the ideas of contextualization, historical temporalities, and hermeneutics in Koselleck's book "Begriffsgeschichte," the epistemological problems associated with the study of history, and the use of relational ontologies to understand the course of modern history. Other subjects under discussion include the historicization of modern political language, the use of typology in social studies, and the historiography of political studies.

Abstract: Knowledge in the making can be regarded as a relational system. Through concepts and apparatus linked to them, the scientist build a relation with nature that fits with the idea she has about it. This model can be applied to consciousness in general, apart from that form of consciousness induced by scientific knowledge. Like scientists, our consciousness is built through a fusion-differentiation process from other people leading to the building of culture as an ethnotheory. This process leads to a “consciousness in action” depending from the success or the failure of expected roles and real behaviors of nature and the energetic balance of these cycles. This model fits with a specific contemporary psychotherapy. It leads to phenomenology and anthropological psychiatry. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article focuses on the works of professor Lorenza Mondada on science and society. She viewed science as a solidified knowledge which originated from social practices. Mondala stated that interaction between researchers lead to the emergence of knowledge sharing in social practices. He studied the role of conversational and language resources in scientific development. He also proposed the the four fundamental dimensions of the scientific practices. Interactional procedures, exchanged between the researchers, promoted the emergence of scientific knowledge in the society.

This study aims to demonstrate that the two examined texts, Le Goût des confitures by Bob Oré Abitbol and Tangers, les miens et les autres by Mary Abécassis Obadia, regardless of their style and intention, have as their source a collective memory, exile and the desire for integration into a new host country. The adventure of the writing thus becomes a part of a greater will where what is at stake is nothing less than the affirmation of a francophone and judaeo-sepharadic identity within a country that reveals a cultural and ethnic pluralism.
