This publication examines the recent inflation in orange juice prices and consumer responses using Nielsen scanner and Orange Juice tracker datasets. Orange juice prices experienced high inflation, peaking at 14.1% in January 2023, leading to decreased sales in both volume and dollars. Consumers are aware of the ongoing inflation in orange juice prices and reduced their orange juice purchases in quantity and frequency instead of discontinuing consumption altogether. Despite the significant barrier of high prices, the proportions of active orange juice consumers and those with a positive perception of orange juice remained steady and strong. Marketing efforts emphasizing the health benefits of orange juice continue to be crucial in sustaining consumer perception and demand.

Martin County, Florida has a rich agricultural history with farming and cattle ranching being important economic drivers since the early 1930s. Nevertheless, the county struggles to meet the balance between food supply and demand. Farmers often face challenges finding sizable, secure, well-paying markets, and the most consumers do not participate in local food transactions. This article summarizes two studies conducted to examine agricultural production in Martin County and its food processing, distribution and marketing systems and infrastructure to better identify potential constraints and opportunities for the local food system.

Every year in the United States, numerous horses are found to be positive for equine piroplasmosis (EP). Most cases occur in Florida and the Southern United States, and most transmission occurs through needle sharing and contaminated blood products. EP is considered a foreign animal disease in the U.S., and suspect or confirmed cases of EP require notification from state and federal animal health officials. All horses imported to the United States must be tested for EP before release from quarantine. The recent rise in EP cases in the U.S. underscores the importance of early recognition and prevention. This article reviews the clinical signs, transmission, and prevention strategies for EP in horses.

This article provides an overview of Pigeon Fever in horses, an infectious condition caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. C. pseudotuberculosis is a gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria that can survive for weeks to months (or possibly even years) in the soil. While horses, cattle, and goats can all be infected with C. pseudotuberculosis, they are typically infected with different strains of the bacteria, and transmission between species is not thought to occur. Horses with pigeon fever develop large, painful abscesses in their muscles. There is a propensity for abscesses to develop in the pectoral muscles, giving the horse a “pigeon breasted” appearance, hence the name pigeon fever. It is important to note that birds are not involved in the transmission or pathogenesis of this condition. In Florida, the largest number of pigeon fever cases are typically reported in the dry months of fall and winter. In goats, the disease is known as “Caseous Lymphadenitis”, and affected animals develop abscesses in lymph nodes and under the skin (typically on the head, behind the ears, or on the neck, shoulder or flank).

Strangles is a disease caused by a bacterial infection of the upper airway and lymph nodes which is highly contagious in horse populations. This article describes the clinical signs, complications, diagnosis, treatment, management, vaccination, and prevention for non-veterinary audiences. Includes references. Colic is one of the most common equine health emergencies and is a leading cause of death in horses worldwide. While the vast majority of colic episodes are mild and resolve with medical treatment alone, some types of colic require surgical intervention for a successful outcome. Although most horse owners hope they never encounter colic in their horses, understanding what colic is and adopting strategies for its management and prevention are important parts of responsible horse ownership and management. A national study conducted by the USDA's National Animal Health Monitoring System in 2015 determined that colic was the leading cause of death for horses aged 1 to 20, accounting for 31.2% of deaths. For horses over 20 years of age, colic was the second leading cause of death (13.4%) behind old age (26.6%). A similar report in 2001 found that the incidence of colic was 4.2 events for every 100 horses per year, that 1.2% of colic cases will require surgery, and that 11% will be fatal. This article reviews the most common causes of colic in horses and provides information for horse owners regarding prevention and treatment strategies.

This study provides an overview of US food shoppers in 2017 and serves as a benchmark for analyzing consumer trends in the future. A nationwide sample of 5,993 adults, primary food shoppers in the United States completed a survey in 2017 to learn about food-related perspectives and trends. Consumers differ in food shopping outlets, grocery spending, response to food price increases, food-related attitudes, food and beverage consumption patterns, and nutritional perceptions.

Faced with reduced domestic supply, competition from imports, and high production costs, the Florida citrus industry and Florida growers need to understand how consumers perceive Florida-produced orange juice and whether they value it more than OJ produced elsewhere. We conducted a national survey to understand consumers' perceptions and confirmed that consumers have a superior perception of Florida OJ, which could lead to higher rates of willingness-to-buy and willingness-to-pay.

California has overtaken Florida to become the major US domestic mandarin producer. Despite a shift in consumer preferences toward the ‘Clementine’ mandarin that is widely grown in California, this cultivar is not well adapted to the subtropical climate of Florida. But in 2009, the University of Florida introduced the ‘Sugar Belle’, a cross between the ‘Clementine’ mandarin and the ‘Minneola’ tangelo. From 1998 through 2001, the Fresh Supersweet Corn Council promoted fresh sweet corn directly to consumers through a third-party communications agency. In 2001, the Council contracted with the Florida Agricultural Market Research Center at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences to conduct a consumer survey to evaluate existing and potential impediments to future market growth for both wholesale and retail stages and to make recommendations for specific marketing strategies that could increase Council members' profitability.
