Cet article examine les pages de garde contenues dans des reliures cartonnées et brochées de cinq textes du dix-huitième siècle français. Ces spécimens démontrent qu'il y des livres qui se doivent d'être conservés intacts comme artéfacts, étant donné que leurs feuillets jaunis par le temps peuvent fournir des indices sur le lieu et l'époque où ils ont été reliés, produits et diffusés, voire même donner un aperçu sur l'exercice de la censure. Il en va de même pour le travail de reliure le plus routinier pratiqué sur des ouvrages anciens, lequel peut faciliter notre compréhension des opérations commerciales jadis en vigueur. Le premier spécimen à l'étude est l'Histoire critique de la philosophie de Deslandes publiée par Jean Nourse à Londres en 1742. La typographie indique toutefois que l'ouvrage fut imprimé en Hollande. Même si ce livre fut frappé d'interdiction par le gouvernement français, les pages de garde donnent à penser qu'il fut relié en France. Le deuxième exemple est un pamphlet politique clandestin intitulé Influence du despotisme de l'Angleterre [1781] imprimé probablement à Neuchâtel et Besançon. La page de garde placée à la fin du livre est une page de titre de l'édition de 1779 ou 1780 de La Boussole imprimée par le même imprimeur de Besançon, ce qui suppose que la reliure fut fabriquée à cet endroit. Le troisième ouvrage est une traduction du Tableau de l'Angleterre et de l'Italie par Archenholtz et publiée à Strasbourg en 1788. Si l'on se fie à des événements survenus en septembre 1793 et rapportés par des journaux français de l'époque, la datation des pages de garde coïncide avec une période trouble de l'histoire politique et économique du pays, ce qui explique en partie la mauvaise qualité de la reliure. Le quatrième texte est l'Analyse des ouvrages de J.J. Rousseau publiée par la Veuve Duchesne à Paris en 1785. Comme l'ouvrage comporte un feuillet tiré d'un roman raté d'un dénommé Monvel publié par Duchesne une décennie plus tôt, on peut présumer que la reliure fut réalisée à Paris. Enfin le cinquième spécimen et non le moins intéressant est un pamphlet royaliste daté de 1789. La page de garde se trouvant à la fin du livre consiste en un feuillet tiré de la première édition in-octavo des Mémoires de Saint-Simon publiés par Buisson en octobre 1788. Si l'on compare cet exemple avec une édition in-douze de Buisson (1788), il appert que le censeur fit plus de coupures dans l'in-octavo que dans le format plus petit. La reliure fut sans doute réalisée à Paris au début de l'année 1789. Les feuillets supprimés auraient été probablement vendus à un cartonnier comme c'était l'usage à l'époque mais, dans ce cas-ci, ils furent utilisés par un relieur de manière que le texte censuré soit aisément lisible. Plusieurs explorateurs et voyageurs ne furent publiés qu'une seule fois au cours de leur carrière. Il était aussi normal pour eux de se faire aider par un rédacteur. En fait, le terme « rédacteur » avait alors un sens plus étendu que ce n'est le cas aujourd'hui. Jusqu'à quel point le rédacteur jouait-il un rôle dans le processus de publication d'un récit de voyage ? Il est crucial d'aborder cette problématique en privilégiant le cas par cas. Souvent, plusieurs versions d'un même récit existent, allant du journal de bord ou des notes de terrain au livre publié. Dans cet article, l'auteur décrit le processus de publication de ces récits et chacun de ses stades, lesquels ont leurs propres caractéristiques (et peut-être même leurs propres auteurs). En dévoilant les différentes étapes de ce processus, l'auteur remet en question l'hypothèse répandue que l'observateur ainsi que l'artiste /l'auteur publié n'étaient qu'une seule et unique personne. Par l'analyse des cas d'un explorateur (Captain Cook, un navigateur du dix-huitième siècle) et d'un voyageur (Paul Kane, un artiste du dix-neuvième siècle), l'auteur met au jour l'instabilité de l'autorité textuelle de l'époque. Dans cet article, l'auteur analyse les relations d'auteurs canadiens, de 1890 à 1990, avec leurs agents littéraires. Le vingtième siècle a été témoin de changements énormes en ce qui concerne le statut et la définition de l'auteur canadien. Or, l'examen des relations entre les auteurs et les agents littéraires met en lumière de tels changements et permet de mieux comprendre comment la littérature canadienne a été produite et diffusée. A biography is presented for Sir William Osler, born in Ontario in 1849, son of an Anglican missionary. He studied medicine at the Toronto School of Medicine and McGill University, studied in Europe, and was named Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at McGill at age 25. He then taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins medical school, then was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University in 1905. He died in 1919. His book collection was the foundation of the Osler Library at McGill.

Digital publishing is still in its infancy, but it is useful to relate what might be called the prologue to the history of digital publishing in French in Quebec. This article presents the actors who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to the transition from print to digital culture in Quebec. It offers a panoramic view of this transition in the various publishing genres from newspapers and magazines, to journals, books, theses, dictionaries, bibliographical databases, and legal texts. A typology of the actors working in these different genres emerges, comprising publisher, aggregator (general or specialist), distributor, production technician, retailer, and librarian. The builders of Quebec's digital publishing milieu are acknowledged through brief descriptions of their projects and enterprises. Many of them have displayed a notable capacity to engage in the development of new models for the production and diffusion of culture and research. The article discusses both print and electronic book versions available for the works of Roman philosopher and political theorist Marcus Tullius Cicero. Texts by Cicero were traditionally used for two purposes, for the study of Latin language and culture, and by more experienced scholars in fields such as rhetoric and political philosophy. A discussion of the history of printed works of Cicero from the nineteenth-century to the present, including topics such as the digitalization of books by Project Gutenberg, Amazon.com, and how Portable Document Format (PDF) files changed the effectiveness of reading electronic books, is presented.

The article provides an overview of the history of the Scholarly Digital Editions, a small academic publisher focused on producing electronic versions of scholarly books. Topics considered include the sale of electronic texts on CD-ROMs, the advent of the World Wide Web, and the author's work on the Canterbury Tales Project, scholarly research which started with the Hengwrt manuscript held at the National Library of Wales of Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." Steele was a former member of the North West Mounted Police and was notable for his military service in the Red River Expedition of 1870 and the second Boer War in South Africa. American journalist Mollie Glenn Niblett was hired in 1912 as a literary agent and editor for Steele's manuscript in Great Britain, choosing Seeley Service and Co. in London, England in 1913. The book was eventually published in 1915 by Herbert Jenkins of London, England.

The article focuses on Graphic Press, which is credited as being the first publisher in Canada specializing in books that were written principally by Canadian authors. Graphic Press was founded in 1924 by Henry C. Miller. Particular attention is paid to the Canadian author Alex Philip. His works include "The Crimson West," "The Painted Cliff," and "Whispering Leaves." The author contends that Philip's works are interesting due to their portrayals of the Canadian West; however, they are also seen by the author as containing racist and sexist language. The article also discusses the adaptations of these novels into motion pictures and the distinctive bindings and illustrations of these books.

Like the text books they complement, dictionaries are widely used tools in schools. This article examines which dictionaries were authorised for use in schools from 1880 to 1960 by the Department of Public Instruction, the definitive authority for education in Quebec in the absence of a government department, and what use was made of them. During the period examined in this study, dictionaries had to receive endorsement, in the same manner as all text books for francophone public schools, from the Catholic Committee of the Council of Public Instruction, which was comprised half of Catholic bishops from Quebec and the other half from the Catholic laity. Text books and dictionaries were subjected to the meticulous and critical examination of the clerical authorities, who had the text modified or removed illustrations that did not seem to conform to orthodoxy in their eyes before granting their approval. Even though other dictionaries were circulating in Quebec, notably those of the publishers Mame, Quillet-Flammarion, and Hatier, it is the Larousse dictionary, particularly the Dictionnaire complet de la langue française with Canadian supplement, that dominated the period and that made the Montreal publisher Beauchemin its fortune. This study shows that the imported French book could only be distributed in Quebec and in Canada as long as the content met the moral standards of the Catholic Committee of the Council of Public Instruction. The article discusses the history of the book in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Three periods are discussed: early settlement through early 19th century; the 19th century up to the time Newfoundland joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949; and, briefly, contemporary history. Topics discussed include books brought into the colony from the late 16th century, the predominantly religious nature of early reading habits, the establishment of the first printing operations in 1807, and developments in the 20th century.

The article discusses a notebook from mid-19th-century Newfoundland and Labrador obtained by the author. Its physical description is presented, followed by its contents, which indicate it was owned or used by at least two people in Newfoundland, Michael Coady of St. John's and John Murphy of Chapel's Cove. The surveyor's notes taking up most of the pages are described, as is a section entitled "1848 Catalogue of Books," followed by a list of works, seen as indicating an exception to the dominant oral tradition of the day.

Emily Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) fut au début du vingtième siècle l'artiste de la scène la plus célèbre au Canada. The article discusses the highlights of the Fourth National Conference on the State of Canadian Bibliography in 2008. Information is given on some issues raised in the conference, including the interdiciplinary nature of book history, periodization, and the role of bibliography in book history.
