This paper proposes a novel ground-fault location method in resonant grounded systems based on distributed modulation and compensation adjustment. After the permanent single-phase ground fault arc has been suppressed, the Petersen coil will be adjusted to make the zero-sequence currents at the upstream monitoring points of the fault point exceed a certain threshold and be modulated in situ. At this time, the corresponding modulated signals can be extracted from the neutral-to-earth voltage on the busbar for measuring these zero-sequence currents. Taking the carrier-frequency of every monitoring point as its identification tags and the variation characteristic of the zero-sequence currents along feeders as another detection criterion, the fault point can be determined online accurately without a high-performance real-time monitoring network. In this paper, the carrier-frequencies allocation and signal conditioning scheme are proposed for a good detection accuracy of the zero-sequence currents, then the signal detection principle with the control of Petersen coil is described in detail. The use of electronic equipment and other dc-compatible appliances in homes and offices is increasing at a very fast rate, as well as the distributed generation of energy. These two statements will most likely trigger, in a near future, the adoption of district-scale dc grids, connecting dc microgeneration plants and consumers, in an effort to cut the number of conversion steps required to deliver power to dc appliances. DC–DC converters will be fundamental in these systems, allowing the establishment of several voltage levels. The reliability of these converters plays a critical role, ensuring service continuity of the loads connected to them. With the increment of reliability in mind, this paper proposes a simple yet effective open-circuit fault diagnostic method suitable for interleaved dc–dc boost converters, but equally functional for other dc–dc converter topologies. The improvements introduced in this paper greatly simplify the diagnostic action, while making the correct diagnostic of faults independent of the switching duty cycle. Moreover, an alternative reconfiguration scheme is proposed to mitigate the adverse impacts of such faults. DC fault protection is the bottleneck that restricts the development of modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) is an ideal protection device that can significantly limit short circuit current and enhance the fault tolerance ability of MMC-HVDC system. At present, several topologies of SFCLs have been proposed, but there is no systematical study of their current-limiting characteristics in MMC-HVDC. This paper studies the development process of DC short-circuit faults in MMC-HVDC system, and analyzes its demand for fault current limiting. Then, resistive type, saturated iron core type and hybrid type SFCL are modeled and their limiting effect of critical fault current under DC pole-to-pole fault is tested. By comparison, the current-limiting characteristics of three types of SFCL are concluded. Results show that resistive SFCL has best performance in steady state, while saturated iron core SFCL has best performance in transient state. Currently produced insulating oils tend to generate gases at relatively low temperatures (90–200 °C). This phenomenon, defined by CIGRE as stray gassing (SG), can hinder the diagnostics of oil-filled electrical equipment based on the DGA method, because high amounts of hydrogen H2 and saturated hydrocarbons can sometimes occur in service without an actual fault. The aim and contribution of this article is to present how to distinguish such cases from electrical partial discharges or hot spots in paper, which may be risky for the safe operation of equipment and demand further investigation. Very high levels of H2 and high levels of C2H6 are observed recently in some families of HV transformers in Poland. This article presents DGA results of oil samples taken from these transformers together with results of laboratory tests of stray gassing of these oils performed according to CIGRE procedure. By using Duval Pentagon 2 it is possible to compare stray gassing patterns in the laboratory and in real transformers and evaluate the temperature range of possible defects. Stray gassing/overheating of oil in transformers, within this temperature range and whatever the possible other causes, is not a concern for their safe operation, according to observations published by CIGRE. Although FRA method is very popular and well-known for its accuracy in fault-detection in three-phase transformer, it has not become an adept so far in fault localization. Fault-localization in transformer winding is undoubtedly an important aspect in fault diagnosis and providing a solution to any extent for this problem would be certainly a worthwhile contribution. Towards this approach, even identifying the faulty winding could be a substantial contribution to enhance the diagnostic performance of FRA method. To this context, this paper presents an innovative FRA measurement technique to identify the faulty phase (whether the middle or either of the two outer phases) in ‘delta-connected’ HV windings. Proposed technique imposes an apparent ‘second-delta’ from the terminals together with the presence of original ‘delta’ inside and measures the two desired output current responses simultaneously for an excitation to the middle phase. A mere observation of symmetry or asymmetry between the two responses determines whether the fault exists in the middle phase or in any of the two outer phase windings. Proposed technique is first evaluated by the simulation results followed by experimental measurements on actual three-phase transformer windings. This paper describes the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) type A (ac only) ground-fault detection circuit and its limitations in accurately detecting electrical ground-fault currents in today's modern electrical installations. Discussed are the effects of waveform modifying power sources and the effect of the dc component on the efficacy of type A safety devices. Limitations of the UL1053 standard for ground-fault sensing and relaying equipment are discussed. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the performance of induction motors subjected to single phasing on the primary side of a distribution transformer that feeds the motors. While single phasing caused by, for example, loss of fuse or bad contact is permanent in nature, that caused by recloser operation is momentary and is the focus of this paper. Several motors and transformer connections were used to investigate the effects of the momentary interruptions of a phase on the performance of the induction motors. Scan-based tests that maintain close-to-functional operation conditions are important for avoiding overtesting of delay faults while achieving the fault coverage required for avoiding test escapes. For a measurable proximity to functional operation conditions, partially functional broadside tests have a known Hamming distance between their scan-in states and reachable states. Another parameter that is important for the discussion of overtesting is the switching activity. This paper suggests a combined metric, where a reduced switching activity is taken as a safety margin that allows a higher Hamming distance between the scan-in state and a reachable state. The metric is defined such that a value of 100% or lower is preferred. Cryptographic architectures provide different security properties to sensitive usage models. However, unless reliability of architectures is guaranteed, such security properties can be undermined through natural or malicious faults. In this paper, two underlying block ciphers which can be used in authenticated encryption algorithms are considered, i.e., light encryption device and high security and lightweight block ciphers. The former is of the Advanced Encryption Standard type and has been considered area-efficient, while the latter constitutes a Feistel network structure and is suitable for low-complexity and low-power embedded security applications. In this paper, we propose efficient error detection architectures including variants of recomputing with encoded operands and signature-based schemes to detect both transient and permanent faults. Authenticated encryption is applied in cryptography to provide confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity simultaneously to the message sent in a communication channel. In this paper, we show that the proposed schemes are applicable to the case study of simple lightweight CFB for providing authenticated encryption with associated data. The error simulations are performed using Xilinx Integrated Synthesis Environment tool and the results are benchmarked for the Xilinx FPGA family Virtex-7 to assess the reliability capability and efficiency of the proposed architectures. This paper develops a merging procedure for functional test sequences that achieves test compaction for a pool of functional test sequences by reducing the number of sequences in the pool. The procedure has the following new features: 1) in contrast to existing selection procedures, the merging procedure described in this paper increases the fault coverage of test sequences in the pool, thus enhancing the ability to reduce the number of sequences and 2) in contrast to existing procedures that concatenate or merge test sequences, the procedure described in this paper does not increase the lengths of the sequences it merges. The procedure is based on the concept of restoration of test vectors. In the context of test sequence merging, restoration consists of copying test vectors from a test sequence Tj into a test sequence Ti in order to allow Ti to detect faults that Tj detects. The merging procedure focuses on the removal of one test sequence Tj at a time by restoring test vectors from Tj into other sequences, allowing them to detect the faults that Tj detects. The penetration of inverter-based resources is growing rapidly around the globe. During a fault, the behavior of inverter-based resource is very different from a traditional synchronous machine based generation. As the penetration of inverter-based resources increases, there is an urgency for the industry to understand their behavior so that these resources can be accurately modeled and their impact on various protection schemes can be studied in detail. This path begins with standardizing the response of inverter-based resources to a fault. Additionally, this paper discusses issues with modeling inverter-based resources in a short circuit model which is developed for systems dominated by synchronous machines and finally a need for further research to understand impacts on traditional protection schemes as inverter-based resources continue to displace traditional generation. This paper proposes a novel simulation method to analyze the characteristics of the electromagnetic noise of claw pole alternators under stator winding interturn short circuit faults. For the two types of faults: short circuit between two wires of the same phase and short circuit between turns of the same wire, a general circuit model built in Matlab/Simulink was introduced to obtained the phase current and output current signals. The phase current was then used as current source and the claw pole alternator was simulated as an electric motor rather than a generator to analyze the magnetic force and electromagnetic noise by using 3-D finite element method and boundary-element method, respectively. A noise bench test was conducted to verify the simulation results. It is shown that under the stator winding interturn short circuit faults, the output current harmonics and electromagnetic noise of the three-phase 12-pole/36-slot claw pole alternator would increase greatly. The 12th order noise replaces the 36th order noise as the most dominant order noise at low speed. Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) impacts a power system by causing the circulation of quasi-dc Geomagnetically-induced Currents (GICs) in transmission lines and high-voltage transformer windings leading to transformer saturation, increased reactive power losses, and voltage regulation problems. Utility planners use various analysis methods and simulation tools to analyze GMD system impacts. These techniques can be broadly categorized into load-flow-based (LF), transient stability type (TS), and electromagnetic transient type (EMT) methods. These methods are based on different modeling assumptions and solution techniques. There is a need for evaluation of these assumptions and cross-examination of results to ensure their accuracy. Such an evaluation is essential to ensure that planners performing required GMD vulnerability assessments have confidence in the results. This paper evaluates the LF, TS, and EMT methods through cross-examination of their results. The objective is to identify their limitations, assess the consistency of their results, and provide assumptions on their use for analysis of GMD system impacts. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to introduce a new Stability Index (SI) for induction motors (IMs) three-phase fault recovery in industrial networks. The proposed SI is based on the steady-state model of induction machine as well as the usage of concepts related to stable and unstable equilibrium points. This index is evaluated by estimating the post-fault slip and is a function of the maximum slip and slips related to the induction motor operating point in pre-fault and post-fault torque-slip characteristics. Moreover, this index quantifies the amount of stability in addition to the stability state determination. The method is validated through comparison between the analytical and dynamic simulation results. Sensitivity analysis has also been used to describe the proposed index completely. This paper also presents a novel objective function by which the fault recovery process can be done optimally. Recently, the development of the electric power industry has led to an increase in the fault current when a fault occurs. It is important to reduce the fault current, since fault currents exceeding the capacity of protective devices can result in large blackouts. In order to reduce the fault current, there is a method to separate the bus line of main substation. However, this method has the disadvantage of complicating the power system. Another method is to install a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). The SFCL has the advantage that the fault current can be quickly limited within 1/4 cycle immediately after the fault occurrence without affecting the power system since its impedance is zero in a normal time. However, the application of SFCL affects the operation of the over-current relay (OCR) due to the reduced fault current such as trip time delay. The trip time delay of OCR was reported to be suppressed by using SFCL's voltage component in previous studies. In this paper, the impedance compensation method was suggested to exclude the effect of SFCL on OCR. To prevent OCR from the influence of SFCL, the component that can exclude the impedance of SFCL was considered to be added to the characteristic formula of OCR. In the family of the High-Luminosity LHC high order correctors, the skew quadrupole was the most critical magnet as three assemblies with different solutions were needed to meet the design specifications. This paper summarizes the prototyping phase of the magnet, discussing the observed nonconformities, the subsequent root cause analyses, and the adopted solutions. A first-hand experience showed us the importance of adopting rigorous quality assurance methods for the electrical insulation, aimed at the early defect detection, and implementing a consistent measurement-to-simulations chain for the optimization of the coils mechanical support. When a fault occurs on the dc side of the voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system, the fault current rises quickly due to the low damping of the dc system. Using a dc fault current limiter (DC-FCL) to limit the rise of the fault current can significantly reduce the breaking requirements of the DCCB. A topology of a bidirectional active dc fault current limiter (BA-FCL) based on coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. No expensive full-controlled power electronic devices are used in this topology. Only a few half-controlled power electronic devices are used to achieve active control of the current limiting unit. Compared with many topologies of current limiter at present, the fault current limiting effect of BA-FCL is improved significantly while the cost, volume, topology complexity, and control complexity are reduced. The stress analysis and parameter design of the proposed current limiter are carried out. Due to the complex structures and fault conditions, accurate fault sensing of the underground distribution cables is a difficult task. The distribution automation system (DAS) and fault indicator system (FIS) are only applicable to the severe faults. In addition, the current DAS and FIS are all based on the centralized data processing system (CDS), increasing the communication pressure and data processing time of the main station. Considering the advantages of edge computing, this paper investigates using the grounding line currents to sense the fault in distribution cable networks. First, an edge computing based fault sensing system (ECS) is designed. The equivalent time-domain distribution cable models considering multi-conductor mutual couplings are then established in both normal and fault cases. The time-domain features of the cable grounding line currents prior to and after the fault are analyzed to create the fault detection criterion. Combining the network topology, locations of the measurement units (MUs), and direction factor of the ground line current, a space matrix based algorithm is created to achieve fault cable section location at edge. Hybrid high voltage direct current systems utilized for bulk-power transmission have recently attracted more attention. The overhead lines (OHLs) are mainly used for the implementation of such systems due to their outstanding economic advantages. However, OHLs are vulnerable to temporary faults, jeopardizing the safe and reliable operation of the network. The resiliency to the line faults is of considerable significance to the power transmission. This paper proposes a fault property identification strategy based on the Pearson correlation coefficient for the LCC-MMC hybrid HVDC system which can differentiate temporary and permanent faults. To achieve this, a voltage signal is injected into the faulty line by decreasing the firing angles of the LCC-based rectifier. Based on the established OHLs model and the injected signal, an estimated backward travelling wave can be accurately calculated. The fault property is identified by comparing the wave difference of the real backward travelling wave and the estimated backward travelling wave. The proposed strategy has a high accuracy since all influencing factors including the fault resistance, fault distance, and line parameters have been taken into account. Finally, to verify the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, several simulations have been performed using PSCAD/EMTDC. Stray fluxes passing through the current transformer (CT) core produced by adjacent bus-bars and conductors or eccentric installation of primary conductors results in asymmetric magnetic flux distribution along the core. This may lead to exceeding the magnetic flux from its appropriate saturation level in some parts of the core, which is called partial saturation (PS) phenomenon. Under such a condition, CT error increases, and some relays maloperations may take place. This paper proposes a novel analytical approach to design flux equalizing winding (EW) for resolving such a problem. Moreover, PS occurrence in a core balance CT (CBCT) is analyzed using the finite element method (FEM), and its negative influence on a sensitive earth fault (SEF) relay is scrutinized as a case study. This paper proposes an approach to mitigate adverse effects of the fault management of closed/ring grids with high shares of distributed generation (DG). The approach refers to conventional distance protection relays in particular. The rising share of DG, especially in distribution systems, can lead to overloadings and intolerable voltages. Closed-ring structures increase the grid capacity for DG due to more balanced load and voltages profiles. However, malfunctions of protection relays may occur because fault locating and selective fault clearing can be disturbed. This paper presents a distance protection algorithm for feeder relays that complies with the requirements of closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds. The proposed current comparison method (CCM) bases on the comparison of negative/sequence currents. It needs no voltage measurement and remains unaffected from inter/infeeds and fault resistances. Additionally, for relays located at the ring coupler, where the ring can be opened, a coupling relay method (CRM) is proposed. It locates unsymmetrical faults in closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds and enables fast and selective opening of the ring. This helps maintaining reliable power supply for customers in closed rings. When a single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault occurs in distribution networks, the existing faulty feeder detection techniques do not present reliable detection results. This paper introduces a novel faulty feeder detection method based on transient energy and cosine similarity. First, the fault characteristics of transient zero-sequence current (TZSC) are analyzed. It is found that the fault transient characteristics of transient components decrease as the grounding resistance increases. Second, to fully maintain the fault transient features, a fundamental frequency component (FFC) shifting method is introduced to remove FFCs. Next, the transient currents without containing FFCs are utilized to generate two fault indicators: transient energy within the first half power cycle and cosine similarity after the first half power cycle. After that step, to effectively merge the two fault indicators, the Laplace distribution is utilized. The fault possibility of each feeder can be quantitatively estimated by calculating the cumulative density function (CDF). Finally, the feeder with the maximum fault possibility is determined as the faulty feeder. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed detection method are verified in the radial distribution network and the modified IEEE 34-bus distribution network. Fault response of an inverter based resource (IBR) is dictated by its control scheme, making it markedly different from the response of a synchronous source. This has led to misoperation of distance relays when fed by IBRs. Published literature is mostly focused on changing the control design of inverters, but this approach is not practical, as these controls are proprietary and beyond the reach of utilities. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a method for a source-agnostic distance relay that works in time-domain. Using only single ended measurements, the relay detects, classifies and locates any fault on the line it monitors. The method does not require any polarization technique. It is shown to work for unbalanced lines of any length, for transmission or distribution system with any number (even 100%) of IBRs, is immune to load encroachment, decaying dc offset and prefault currents. Multiphase drives with fault-tolerant capability are favored in high-reliability applications. In most fault-tolerant multiphase drives, the fault types and locations must be known prior to the fault-tolerant control. Therefore, fault diagnosis is an indispensable procedure. This paper proposes a generalized method to detect and identify the open-circuit faults (including open-switch and open-phase faults) in star-connected symmetrical multiphase drives with different phase numbers. The selected fault diagnosis signals are calculated solely from simple arithmetical operations of measured phase currents, resulting in easy real-time implementation. As fault detection signals are derived from the physical constraint imposed by the neutral point, the proposed method is naturally robust and not sensitive to operating points, machine transients and harmonics in stator currents. Therefore, a relatively small fault detection threshold can be used and fast detection can also be achieved. After the fault has been detected, the fault type is further identified according to the polarity of the integration of phase currents. This paper analyzes magnet defect fault signature in the surface-mounted permanent magnet motor (SPMM) using nonlinear analytical model considering the influence of magnet shape and magnetization direction. Based on the surface current method and conformal mapping technique, the magnet defect equivalent current and equivalent nonlinearity current are proposed to represent the magnet defect. Accordingly, the performance of SPMM can be obtained. The proposed model has great potential to investigate SPMM with non-uniform magnet defect and gives theoretical basis for fault diagnosis. The extra sensing coil is added to measure the voltage waveforms, which can also be predicted using the nonlinear analytical model and shows the influence of magnet defect fault. Digital relays are capable of computing the negative-sequence current on both primary and secondary sides of the transformer along with the phase difference between these two negative-sequence currents. By using both phase and magnitude information, negative-sequence current could be used to detect minor turn-to-turn faults involving 3% of the transformer's windings or more. Turn-to-turn faults may still occur even if no current is flowing on one side of the transformer, such as during energization. With no current flowing in the secondary windings of the transformer, negative-sequence current-based algorithms become insensitive. This paper introduces a relay prototype, using both negative-sequence current and negative-sequence voltage, which retains its sensitivity during energization. The relay's performance for several commonly encountered system scenarios, such as overexcitation, current-transformer saturation, nonzero fault resistance, transformer energization, and external faults were also examined. The experimental results presented in this paper indicate that the algorithm proposed in this paper is faster and more sensitive than restrained current differential protection and is capable of detecting turn-to-turn faults occurring during transformer energization. This paper discusses the protection requirements to interconnect a typical refinery to the utility system. However, the information provided is applicable to other industrial facilities that have generation. It covers applications involving service to a refinery that normally requires a transformation between the utility's supply voltage and the refinery's utilization voltage. This paper specifically addresses refineries with generation that are connected to utility transmission circuits. The protection discussed must protect the refinery from the effects of utility system faults, but must also protect the utility from the effects of refinery faults. Coordination between these two systems is essential to minimize the effects of fault-induced outages. This paper specifically addresses typical refinery–utility interconnections system one-line designs, determining utility supply performance expectations, impact of generation on interconnection protection, relay functional requirements for typical interconnections protection, relay communication requirements, and grounding of the interconnection transformer(s) and its impact on protection. Although the concept of a multiphase drive system dates back to the middle of the 20th century, the initial pace of development was rather slow, as witnessed by the first two surveys of the area published in the beginning of this century. However, considerably new developments have resulted in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of this century, leading to an authoritative survey of the asymmetrical six-phase drive control and subsequently of the review of the complete area. This also initiated the organization and subsequent publication of the first IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics "Special Section on Multiphase Machines and Drives" in May 2008, which commenced with another survey paper, and that contained 12 original research papers. Since the publication of this Special Section in May 2008, the level of interest and pace of developments in the area have further accelerated and substantial new knowledge has been generatedwith an ever-increasing number of published research papers and reported new industrial applications. Such a trend has been emphasized in a recent paper. It therefore seemed appropriate to revisit the area and organize this Special Section as a sequel to the first one. The call for the Special Section papers resulted in 51 submissions, almost twice as many as the total back in 2008, thus confirming a substantial growth of the area. Indeed, the amount of new knowledge acquired since the publication of the first Special Section in 2008 has meant that it was not possible to provide a complete and thorough survey of the field in a single review paper. The main objective of this two-part state-of-the-art paper called “Recent Advances in the Design, Modeling, and Control of Multiphase Machines” is to present latest contributions in the multiphase machines' field. The first part of this paper focuses on the recent progress in the design, modeling, and control, whereas the drive is in healthy operation. This second part presents relevant contributions in two not analyzed fields. The first is in relation with the use of the additional degrees of freedom of multiphase machines and the exploitation of their fault-tolerant capabilities without adding extra hardware. The second one analyzes multiphase generation, particularly in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems and stand-alone applications. This paper presents a new stochastic approach to the comprehensive assessment of the impact of voltage sags on large-scale power networks. The approach takes into account the stochastic nature of power system operation, including load variation, uncertainty of fault clearing time by protection relays, fault rates of network components, and the variation/uncertainty in equipment sensitivity to voltage sags. A new duration zone division method is used to derive sag duration and occurrence frequency based on the stochastic distribution of clearing time required by specific protection systems. The adopted probabilistic representation facilitates estimation of network performance based on a single-event characteristic, sag severity index (SSI), developed in the companion paper (Part I). Based on SSI, a new single-site index with respect to voltage sags (bus performance index BPI^S) is developed to comprehensively represent the overall bus performance with respect to voltage sags. The index is used to identify the areas of the network, called weak areas of the network in this paper, containing buses that are most exposed to potentially disruptive voltage sags. High resistance grounding (HRG) is a well-proven technology for improving electric reliability for many industrial and utility facilities such as used in petrochemical, automotive, and generating plants. Many such facilities require the increased reliability for production and operational reasons. This paper will discuss the improved personnel safety aspects of using HRG on low-voltage systems. In particular, this paper will discuss the following: 1) the probability of the three common faults occurring within an industrial plant, namely, three-phase, phase-to-phase, and ground faults; 2) how the probability of a ground fault can be used to improve electrical safety with HRG; 3) the impact of a ground fault on a system and the speed at which the ground fault on a solidly grounded system may propagate into a multiphase fault; 4) the risk reduction of a ground fault on an HRG system propagating into a multiphase fault; 5) the potential reduction in serious and fatal arc blast injuries through the use of an HRG system; and 6) potential single-pole breaker clearing issues when a second ground fault occurs on a second phase. Energization of the transformer leads to large magnetizing current called inrush current. It results in reduction in transformer life, reduction in circuit breaker life, and power quality issues in the system. For low and medium voltage level systems in generation and distribution, usually, gang operated circuit breakers are employed, which do not allow independent pole operation. This makes controlled switching more challenging in such systems. This paper proposes a controlled switching technique to minimize the inrush currents for a 3-phase transformer using gang operated circuit breaker. Optimum points for controlled closing and opening are obtained from a flux error function calculated from residual and prospective fluxes of the transformer. Practical challenges due to error in voltage measurements, variation in mechanical closing time, transients in flux, etc. and their solutions are also discussed in this paper. The proposed technique is validated by Controller Hardware-In-Loop (CHIL) test and a scaled-down laboratory test on 5 kVA, 210/400 V, Delta-Star transformer. In both cases, the inrush current is limited to 1pu, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, a field test is carried out on a 500 kVA, 6.6 kV/433 V, Delta-Star distribution transformer to confirm the viability of the developed switching technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a novel and applicable approach to calculate the reactive power loss of converter transformer under dc bias. By using this proposed method, only general information of the converter transformer and the network is needed for the calculation within a certain dc current range. Specifically, a three-dimensional model of ± 800 kV converter transformer model for simulation test is established by the finite element method. Through simulation test, the electromagnetic characteristics and reactive loss characteristics of converter transformer under dc bias can be obtained, and the relationship between the bias current and the reactive loss of ± 800 kV converter transformer is quantified. Mal-operation of distance protection relays during power swing (PS) condition can endanger the power system stability. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish between short-circuit faults and PS by a power swing blocking (PSB) function to prevent undesired tripping of distance relay. This paper develops a novel and straightforward PSB method based on the rate of impedance angle change (RIAC). Not only can the proposed approach fairly discriminate both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults from PS, but also it can appropriately preserve protection scheme security during PS under single-pole tripping (SPT) on a transmission line. Furthermore, there is no need to perform extensive dynamic stability studies for setting the PSB function parameters. Unlike the rate of impedance change approaches utilized two blinders, the developed approach only needs an inner blinder. Thus, it can be used for networks running near their operational limits. The proposed method is evaluated through a modified IEEE-PSRC benchmark system in PSCAD/EMTC environment. Although the harmonics interaction plays a vital role in causing commutation failure (CF) in an ultra HVDC (UHVDC) system with hierarchical connection, it has not been sufficiently considered in previous work. In this paper, the electric interaction among the inverter valves of the UHVDC system with hierarchical connection during receiving system fault transient process is demonstrated. Moreover, the mechanism of CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection is also investigated via the analysis of harmonics interaction. After the AC fault occurs, the appearance processes of the local commutation failure (LCF) and concurrent commutation failure (CCF) are divided into several stages and interpreted by schematic diagrams. And the characteristics of each stage are also concluded. In addition, a coordinated CF prevention scheme based on harmonics and DC current detection is proposed to mitigate the CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified via a $\pm 1100$ kV UHVDC transmission system under various short circuit ratio values and AC-side coupling strengths. Accurate fault location for underground cables in MMC-HVDC grids reduces the time finding faults as well as the system operational costs. For MMC-HVDC grids, the data window during faults is usually short. During such severe transients, the frequency dependent line parameters of the underground cables have strong influence on the fault location accuracy. In this paper, a novel fault location algorithm for underground cables in MMC-HVDC grids is proposed. First, a multi-layer model for the underground cable using partial differential equations is proposed, which considers the distributed and frequency dependent line parameters in time domain. Afterwards, the numerical finite difference solution of the multi-layer model is proposed to obtain the voltage distributions along the entire cable. Finally, the voltage method is applied to locate faults. Numerical experiments show that the multi-layer model accurately considers the frequency dependency of the cable parameters, and the solution of the model obtains accurate voltage distribution even during system transient. Extensive test cases prove that the proposed algorithm locates faults with less errors than the existing algorithm. To improve the reliability of power supply, reclosing schemes are required after transient faults, which commonly occur in overhead line based high voltage DC (HVDC) systems. However, in the event of permanent faults, the auto-reclosing scheme may cause a severe strike. To avoid the severe impacts caused by permanent faults, the fault type should be discriminated before activating the reclosing scheme. Therefore, an adaptive reclosing scheme based on phase characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the modulation of a periodic voltage by actively controlling the hybrid DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is introduced. Then, a cascaded π equivalent model and its decoupling algorithm are presented to analyze the frequency-domain characteristics of the measured impedance of the coupled overhead lines. From the frequency-domain characteristics, the frequency of the periodic detecting voltage is determined to analyze the phase features of the measured impedance at primary frequency. The permanent or transient faults can thus be accurately identified by using these different phase characteristics, with negligible influence on the healthy lines. The current-limiting inductors (CLIs) are commonly used to suppress DC fault current to safely trip DC circuit breakers in MMC-HVDC systems, but it significantly jeopardizes DC dynamics and causes instantaneous power mismatch between AC and DC sides of islanded rectifier station (RS), exposing MMC internal states to large disturbance. This paper firstly provides a detailed analysis of the influence of CLIs on AC fault, establishes RS mathematical representation including AC side dynamic, and reveals the mechanism of DC voltage oscillation, modulation saturation and PCC waveform distortion. The analysis shows that the AC and DC fault characteristics are decoupled under unsaturated AC modulation, but coupled under excessively low submodule capacitor voltage, where AC modulation is saturated and PCC waveforms are distorted. To solve this issue, a novel RS AC fault ride through method for MMC-HVDC system with CLIs is proposed to stabilize RS DC voltage, desaturate AC modulation and decouple fault characteristics by regulating the zero-sequence modulation of circulating current suppression. In addition, a current reference disturbance and an AC energy dissipation device coordinated control are designed, which adaptively recovers the submodule capacitor voltage. Contemporary and emergent automotive systems are heavily populated by complex integrated electronics. The number of safety-critical devices used in advanced driver-assistance systems or autonomous vehicles is growing with high-end models containing hundreds of embedded microcontrollers. Achieving functionally safe automotive electronics requires test solutions that might be costly to engineer. Therefore, to address challenges posed by high-quality and long-term reliability requirements, this article presents low-cost test pattern generation schemes for a scan-based hybrid logic BIST of automotive ICs. It may allow one to optimize test coverage and test time during in-system test applications. The first presented technique deploys a seed-flipping PRPG to periodically complement PRPG stages in a methodical tree-traversal manner. The second scheme is based on a seed-sorting approach that allows additional tradeoffs between test data volume and test coverage. As shown in this article, the proposed schemes can be easily integrated with a test compression environment and deployed in different modes of in-system testing, such as key-off, key-on, and periodic (incremental) online tests. The difficulty in acquiring fault label data is a major obstacle to the application of data-driven fault isolation in DC microgrids. To remove this barrier, this paper introduces an approach of generating synthetic data with the line currents measured during normal operation as the substitute for fault label data in training an ensemble model, which is aimed to isolate line short-circuit faults in DC microgrids. Based on a high-frequency model of DC microgrids, we prove that the line currents during the closing of unloaded DC lines have similar high-frequency features as those during a line short-circuit fault. On this basis, the synthetic data are obtained through performing discrete wavelet packet transform on the line currents measured during the circuit breaker operation. With normal operating data and synthetic data, an ensemble model is trained as the fault classifier. In the verification tests of different fault scenarios in a three-terminal DC microgrid model, the detection rates of the proposed ensemble model are over 90% while the false positive rates are below 0.5%. This paper presents a novel two-terminal fault location algorithm without using line parameters. The algorithm is formulated using unsynchronized voltage and current phasors of the fundamental frequency at both ends. The novelty of the proposed method lies in the fact that it takes into account different angles of synchronism mismatch in pre-fault and fault conditions while considering distributed parameter line model and its solution is in closed form. Simulation results and performance comparison with existing methodology are presented under different fault conditions. The simulations were performed on EMTP-RV platform. The algorithm has also been tested with practical data of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL). The test result shows the validity and accuracy of the developed fault location algorithm. The paper presents the results of experimental registrations and numerical simulations of the transient overvoltages caused by single phase intermittent arc earth fault in 35 kV network with isolated neutral. Experimental laboratory investigation is performed in order to implement appropriate arc fault model for arcs with low and discontinuous current. Single phase to earth arc fault is created in field in 35 kV network. Numerical model of the system is created in EMTP-ATP software. The missing capability of DC fault current limitation is an inherent disadvantage in the typical half-bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC), which restricts its application in long-distance high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. The full-bridge submodule (FBSM) and clamped double submodule (CDSM) topologies allow for fault current self-clearing, but also suffer from additional hardware cost and power losses. In this paper, an improved submodule topology utilizing the new reverse-blocking insulated gate bipolar transistor (RB-IGBT) is proposed to improve system economy without compromising its performance. The operating principles and DC fault characteristics of the proposed topology are analyzed in details, including comparison with various topologies in terms of cost, losses, fault current clearing speed and thermal. Compared with the traditional CDSM topology, the proposed RBSM can clear DC faults faster with reduced cost of switching devices. A DC fault protection strategy for MMC-HVDC system is also presented. Accurate faulty phase detection under single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault is the basis of the emerging voltage-based fault arc suppression technology. Most conventional faulty phase recognition criteria assume the distributed line-to-ground parameters are symmetrical, therefore suffering invalidity in actual distribution networks especially under high-resistance ground-fault conditions. This paper firstly analyzes the magnitude and phase angle variation models of the phase-to-ground voltages before and after the SLG fault. Considering the asymmetrical distributed parameters and the line impedance, the specific phase-to-ground voltage variation rules corresponding to SLG fault on each phase are then discussed. Based on the voltage variation rules, a robust and practical method for faulty phase identification is proposed, which does not need the distributed parameters. Finally, the correctness of the variation rules and the availability of the proposed method is verified by simulation. The high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable has shown promising prospects in megacities for the advantages of high transmission power density and low loss. However, when HTS cable is working on grid, various kinds of faults may cause irreversible damage, resulting in the failure of reclosing. In this paper, the resistive superconducting fault current limiter (R-SFCL) is introduced into the power system to cooperate with the HTS cable, so as to reduce the potential damage caused by fault current. Firstly, the equivalent circuit models are established, and then transient response of HTS cables under fault condition is analyzed, the recovery time of HTS tapes are used to define the design of R-SFCL. Transformers are utilized in generation, transmission, and distribution power system network, and face an enormous number of hazards during their course of operation. Frequency response analysis (FRA) is an inexpensive, accurate, and non-destructive technique to explore the transformer mechanical integrity very fast. However, FRA results interpretation is not being automated yet. This study introduces a new setup for FRA measurement that can assist to leave the conventional FRA data interpretation techniques and obtain smart interpretation. Hence, FRA setups and interpretation techniques are studied and formulated in this paper. A new measurement technique is introduced and discussed in detail. Practical studies are performed over distribution and power transformers and FRA data are recorded for inter-disk fault. The analysis of fault severity, which is obatined in this paper, is an advantage of the proposed measurement technique. In this regard, the techniques from machine learning and numerical analysis are employed to train a predictive engine for smart interpretation of FRA data. It is revealed that the proposed intelligent technique is capable of interpreting, detecting, and classifying the transformer winding inter-disk fault and its severity. A novel multi-function saturated-core fault current limiter (MFCL) with two operating modes is proposed in this paper. MFCL can achieve fault current limitation and power flow management by switching operating mode: current-limiting mode and power-flow-controlling mode, which realizes technology convergence. The MFCL consists of an iron core with rotatable magnetic valve, ac coils, dc coils, and a fault-limiting reactor. The operating principle of the MFCL and the design of the rotatable magnetic valve are analyzed in this paper. The finite-element analysis (FEA) model based on Maxwell is used to analyze the MFCL. The fault resistance and infeeded currents from tapped transmission lines are the two main challenges to establish correct fault location estimation in multi-terminal transmission lines. Also, fault location estimation in double-circuit lines is more complicated than single-circuit lines due to the effect of mutual coupling and inter-circuit faults. This paper proposes a negative-sequence network-based method to estimate the fault location of double-circuit multi-terminal transmission lines. In the presented method, signals are measured in the relay location and then, communication links are not required as it uses only one end measurements. Also, in conventional distance relays, six elements are needed to calculate the fault location in all types of faults. Furthermore, in this method, by using only one element for each transmission line, accurate fault location can be estimated. Also, high fault resistance, mutual coupling, and infeeded currents from tapped transmission lines do not have impact on the performance of the presented scheme. To investigate the effects of the line shunt capacitances on the proposed method, a PI model of the transmission lines is used in all the investigations. High-voltage power supplies (HVPSs) are widely used to supply vacuum tubes. The amount of delivered energy from the HVPS to the tube is an important issue during the vacuum arc in the tube. The conventional protection mechanism consists of a shunt crowbar which diverts the fault current from the tube to itself as a parallel path. The crowbar circuit is usually built of the devices without the turn-off capability. It is a drawback since the output of the power supply is shortened for a long time. Thus, the restoration time of these power supplies is excessive. This demerit can have detrimental effects on mission-critical applications. In this paper, the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based crowbar structure is studied to overcome this issue. In the proposed protection mechanism, the crowbar can be reopened intentionally after closing. A theoretical analysis is presented to compare power supply performance in the presence of the conventional crowbar with the IGBT-based crowbar. The experimental results are presented to demonstrate the practical considerations of the proposed crowbar structure and its appropriate performance.
