Chapter 10, "Addressing Unevenness" is the most attractive part here: it connects behavioural theory to (regional) economic development, transformation, and well-being. Chapter 8 is the crowning achievement to which the two preceding chapter built up: they provided an analysis how "culture and personality can be measured and examined as a process of co-evolution" (p. 191), and chapter 8 links the resulting "human agency potential" to entrepreneurship and innovation. Although these chapters read like earlier papers or reports that have now been integrated into the book, they still provide valuable inpiration for how the connection from agents to regions actually can work. Initially, Cavalli-Sforza pursued a least-squares distance algorithm--also a phenetic measure--whereas Edwards conceived an approach which he referred to as "minimum evolution", which, depending on which of his papers in the book you read, either is or is not the same thing as cladistic parsimony. Being ardent Fisherians, Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards also attempted to develop a maximum-likelihood estimator for their data, but these efforts were stymied by technical difficulties. Thus, working and reworking a single dataset, the narrative established in the book is that Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards ([5], [6]) managed to "invent" four different methods of phylogenetic inference in a fell swoop. Edwards hastened to distance himself from systematics: "Unlike contemporary practice in taxonomy, the new methods of phylogenetic analysis belonged to the quite separate tradition of genetical model building and statistical estimation theory used, for example, in genetic linkage" (Edwards, [11]). This short paper discusses Barry Morris's account of the 'riot' at Brewarrina, New South Wales, in 1987 and its legal aftermath, which continued for some years. An iconic event in Australian race relations, much can be learnt from its various dimensions, a fact that Morris amply demonstrates. Notwithstanding, this discussion questions a related narrative in his book, which interprets capitalism's impact on self-determination simply in terms of neoliberalism's 'political effects'. The book represents an ideal follow up to Edward Glaeser's (2011) I The triumph of the city i , where an optimistic view about the way urbanites currently benefit from living in cities was presented and documented. For each of those future strategies and policy options, Glaeser and Cutler provide guidelines based on their reading of the present crisis, in the light of their prior applied studies dealing with urban life from an urban and health economics perspective. Nevertheless, a sound policy reaction must be designed, lest funding for local policies substantially shrinks and the urban policies suggested in Glaeser and Cutler's book are literally choked. This paper takes as its starting point the interpretive puzzles presented to the reader by the highly mobile and elusive phenomenon 'Odradek' in Kafka's 'Die Sorge des Hausvaters'. It goes on to consider, on the one hand, Kafka's efforts in his aphorisms to build a metaphysical scheme centred on movement as a key feature of human existence, and, on the other hand, various elements in Kafka's writing which elude containment within that metaphysical construct. Philip Gorski's edited book engages the question of how Bourdieu's concepts can aid historical analysis, and in particular, account for change as well as reproduction. From a fascinating set of papers, this review essay takes special notice of two that theorize crisis. One, by Ivan Ermakoff, engages the question of whether disruption creates the opportunity for more conscious calculation on the part of actors; a second, by Gisele Sapiro, considers how a crisis reverberates through a specific field. ABSTRACT The recent facsimile edition of Henricus Glareanus's Chronology of Livy, prepared by Anthony T. Grafton and Urs B. Leu, provides access to a primary source that is unique from the point of view of the history of science and scholarship and of the book and reading. The basis of the edition, a copy of Chronologia annotated by Glareanus's disciple Gabriel Hummelberg II, now preserved at the Princeton University Library, serves scholars both as a point of departure for outlining hypotheses on the teaching methods of early modern humanists as well as the role of chronology in the humanist curriculum. My reading of their edition is based on three points. First, I put the primary source of their choice in a context that includes provincial early modern educational centers as I believe that their enterprise could clear the way for future narratives on forgotten scholars who dealt with the issues of technical chronology. Second, I show the importance of Grafton and Leu's thesis on the procedures of transmission of teachers' commentary, which, according to them, is documented by the Princeton copy of Chronologia. Third, I argue that the seemingly conservative decision to publish a paper edition of an annotated volume at the moment when state-of-the-art digital tools for such editions are being tailored through the alliance of scholars and IT specialists should open a discussion among historians of the book and reading, science, and education that would lead to the determination of standards for scholarly editions of libri annotati. This paper argues that Piketty's book should not simply be seen as that of an economist, but that it contains significant resources for sociologists to draw upon. These are firstly, this approach to social science and his use of visualizations which chime closely with recent claims about the power of description. Secondly I consider his conceptualization of time and history - which in rebutting epochal arguments about the speed of contemporary change allows for a much better appreciation of the 'long durée'; and finally his conceptualization of social classes and privilege through his elaboration of a sociology of accumulation and inheritance. Piketty's Capital (2014) primarily describes and analyses changes in the distribution of wealth and annual incomes. This paper focuses on his policy proposals that make up Part Four of the book. Piketty defends the 'social state' but he discusses it largely in terms of distribution and redistribution between tax units. This neglects the important role of social policy in promoting recognition and redistribution of income and opportunities that is related to gender, race, disability and sexual orientation. Nor does Piketty consider inequalities in health which effect life-time incomes, nor the impact of housing policies on house prices and the distribution of wealth. It is argued that Piketty's approach to social security is simplistic and plays down the complexity of competing policy goals. On taxation, Piketty defends progressive taxation and proposes a global capital levy. The latter proposal runs into formidable problems in seeking global taxation in a world of nation states. Rather than seeking a policy that is, for the foreseeable future, wholly politically impractical, a case is made for less idealistic but more practical and urgent tax coordination between nations to address the widespread avoidance of taxation that large corporations and the very wealthy are now permitted - taxation on which the future of the social state depends. The importance of human and social capital, which are largely set aside by Piketty, are discussed. Finally,it is argued that his approach to policy is to describe trends and propose amelioration of growing inequality rather than to identify causes of the trends and propose policies that might address the causes. The topic of phytopathogenic bacteria and plant diseases is a huge one, with hundreds of research papers published worldwide every month in this field, so the author, Professor B. S. Thind, formerly of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India, is to be commended on this impressive book. This pathogen is recognized as a significant threat to many other plant species beyond grapevine and citrus, such as in olive plantations in Europe, so by including it under its species name it might have made it clearer that this is a broad host-range pathogen.
