The image of Prague and its literary presentation in the works of Cynthia Ozick and Philip Roth is at the center of this book which examines a topic that has only been superficially touched on by critical attention. The author posits the theory that Prague is one of the most important icons in the American literary imagination. The study is divided into six parts: an introduction to the topic; a presentation of the theory which forms the basis for the author's methods of analysis; a discussion of earlier European and American writings on Prague; an analysis of Cynthia Ozick's novel The Puttermesser Papers (1997); an analysis of Philip Roth's novel The Professor of Desire (1977) and his short novel The Prague Orgy (1985), the latter being an epilogue to Roth's trilogy Zuckerman Bound; a conclusion as well as a survey of American authors whose writings were inspired by Prague after the end of Communism. After the introduction to the study, Kraus describes the theoretical framework which focuses on the link between imagological and iconological aspects, including the relation between national identity, hetero-images, cultural differences, and urban space. By explaining Erwin Panofsky's methods of interpretation and W.J.T. Mitchell's definition of the term "image", she chooses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the symbolic power of Prague which is both a site of memory and a place of rebirth as well as renewal. The third part of the study is a comprehensive introduction to travel reports by European and American visitors to Prague which were written in the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By exploring the travelogues of prominent writers such as Fynes Moryson, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Washington Irving, Booker T. Washington, Marcia Davenport, and F.O. Matthiessen, the author shows that Ozick and Roth write in a long literary tradition dedicated to Prague. The fourth and fifth parts of the study present an analysis of the selected primary works. As Ozick time-travels to the Prague of Rabbi Loew and his golem, The Puttermesser Papers is the first work to be discussed. While each chapter of the analysis focuses on central Prague-related issues which are addressed by Ozick and Roth, Kraus also examines two central aspects: the term "American- Jewish author" which has often been linked to Ozick's and Roth's ways of writing, and the question if and how scholars have paid attention to Prague as theme and motif. In addition, the author provides characterizations of Ozick's heroine Ruth Puttermesser and Roth's protagonists David Kepesh and Nathan Zuckerman which help to explain why these individuals imagine Prague or why thy travel to Prague. The study of The Puttermesser Papers, The Professor of Desire and The Prague Orgy centers on the following topics: the creation of Puttermesser's golem Xanthippe, the role of Rabbi Loew, Walt Whitman's poem "Mannahatta", Hart Crane's long poem "The Bridge", Puttermesser's vision of New York as a 'New Prague'; David Kepesh's trip to 'Kafka's city' and the journey to his inner self; Nathan Zuckerman's notebooks in the context of Roth's trilogy Zuckerman Bound and the search for a lost manuscript in Prague. The study also investigates earlier references to Prague that run through many of Ozick's and Roth's writings. These include Ozick's short story collections (e. g. Levitation, The Pagan Rabbi and Other Stories) as well as her essays, and Roth's use of Franz Kafka as an intertextual and intratextual figure in his work (e. g. "'I Always Wanted You to Admire my Fasting'; or, Looking at Kafka", The Ghost Writer, The Breast). In the sixth part of the study, the author summarizes the most crucial aspects concerning her analysis of Prague as a major icon in Ozick's and Roth's works. She also draws attention to American writers who were inspired by Prague or who used Prague as a central theme in their novels after the fall of Communism: Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated, Arthur Phillips' Prague, and Gary Shteyngart's The Russian Debutante's Handbook. This new "expatriate generation" continued to write about a city that is more than Kafka's city and more than a 'broken' city of the Cold War. Prague has the restorative power for individuals who wish to connect with the past and who search for their identities as human beings, and, thus, hope to find meaning in their lives. Pedro Pietri's and Kamau Brathwaite's poems suggest that a transnational and translingual comparative approach to Caribbean literature will highlight similarities across nationalities born of parallel colonial histories and emigration experiences. While the texts themselves might not articulate a transnational or translingual perspective, their intertextuality suggests that such a relationship exists. This paper will focus explicitly on how history, language, and religion play out within poems about the emigrant experience in the metropolis. I will argue that colonialism and the transnational movement from the Caribbean to urban centers have fostered similar emigrant experience even among colonial subjects with different national identities.
