Energy harvesting techniques provide solutions for powering battery-free circuits or even for charging storage elements such as batteries or super capacitors. In this paper a self-starting switched-capacitor approach based on three-stage charge pump that is appropriate to thermoelectric and photo-voltaic energy harvesting, is carried out in a 28 nm ultra-thin buried oxide (UTBB) fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) CMOS technology. By taking advantage of the FD-SOI substrate characteristics, the forward-body-biasing (FBB) technique is applied in order to improve switch conductances. In addition, a sizing exploration of standard N-type and flipped-well P-type devices operating as switches is advanced, in order to provide optimum balance between their conductances. Extensive simulation results validate the proper operation of the charge pump at a minimum input voltage of 150 mV, and show a maximum efficiency peak of 63.3% at an input voltage of 350 mV and load a current of 500 nA. This paper presents a low-profile and autonomous piezoelectric energy harvesting system consisting of an extraction rectifier and a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) circuit for powering portable electronics. Synchronized switch harvesting on capacitor-inductor (SSHCI) technique with its unique two-step voltage flipping process is utilized to downsize the ponderous external inductor and extend application areas of such harvesting systems. SSHCI implementation with small flipping inductor-capacitor combination enhances voltage flipping efficiency and accordingly attains power extraction improvements over conventional synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (SSHI) circuits utilizing bulky external components. A novel MPPT system provides robustness of operation against changing load and excitation conditions. Innovation in MPPT comes from the refresh unit, which continually monitors excitation conditions of piezoelectric harvester to detect any change in optimum storage voltage. Compared with conventional circuits, optimal flipping detection inspired from active diode structures eliminates the need for external adjustment, delivering autonomy to SSHCI. Inductor sharing between SSHCI and MPPT reduces the number of external components. The circuit is fabricated in 180 nm CMOS technology with 1.23 mm2 active area, and is tested with custom MEMS piezoelectric harvester at its resonance frequency of 415 Hz. It is capable of extracting 5.44x more power compared to ideal FBR, while using $100~\mu $ H inductor. Due to reduction of losses through low power design techniques, measured power conversion efficiency of 83% is achieved at 3.2 V piezoelectric open circuit voltage amplitude. This paper introduces a fully integrated switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC boost converter suitable for energy harvesting in miniature sensor systems with varying harvesting source and battery voltages. Unlike the conventional SC DC-DC boost converters, where efficiency is optimized only for a few topology-dependent voltage conversion ratios (VCRs), the proposed soft-charging-based SC converter achieved VCR-insensitive evenly high efficiency for a wide range of input and output voltages. A test chip was fabricated in 180nm process, and the measured peak efficiency and average efficiency are 85.3% and 83.6%, respectively, for 1.8V regulated output voltage and a wide range of input voltages (0.95–1.8 V). Also, a peak efficiency of 88.9% and average efficiency of 87.6% are achieved for a wide range of battery output voltages (3.0–4.2 V) and a 1.2V harvesting source input voltage. This paper presents a thermal/RF hybrid energy harvester. The energy harvesting system can scavenge energy from a thermoelectric generator (TEG) and a radio-frequency (RF) energy source simultaneously, and deliver the combined power to a single load. Two techniques are employed in the system to increase the end-to-end efficiency; the rectifying-combination technique is proposed to eliminate the power loss associated with a dedicated AC-DC converter before the combiner and an improved fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) maximum power tracking (MPPT) is considered for a high average efficiency. A dynamic power path control extracts the maximum RF power from a cross-coupled differential rectifier, and also behaves as an AC/DC energy combiner. The thermal/RF harvester system achieves a measured peak end-to-end power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 63.4%. The shorter sampling time of 26ms every 16s for the proposed FOCV MPPT method reduces the long charging tail required to refresh the sampling capacitor, resulting in a an improved average efficiency of 82.2% for the thermal harvester. Fabricated in 0.18 $\mu \text{m}$ CMOS technology, the prototype operates at a thermal input voltage ranging from 40 mV to 400 mV and an RF power from −18 dBm to −3 dBm and delivers an output voltage of 1.8 V. Low-power circuits often employ dynamic voltage scaling and energy harvesting. Such circuits need a power management unit that can convert the voltage source to a wide range of target voltages with high efficiency. Targeting such a power management unit, this paper presents a reconfigurable architecture of switched capacitor (SC) voltage converter. It introduces a design optimization methodology that can determine trade-off among design parameters to meet the goal. The proposed converter employs a reconfigurable topology with four capacitors. It provides 11 conversion ratios: 6 step-down and 5 step-up ratios supporting wide input/output voltage range. An analytical model for the output impedance of the proposed reconfigurable SC topology is presented. Using the model, the proposed optimization methodology can minimize the total power dissipation. To validate the proposed architecture and optimization methodology, the converter has been implemented in a 130-nm CMOS process using integrated capacitors of total size 2.2 nF. An efficient self-powered synchronous electric charge extraction CMOS interface circuit dedicated to piezoelectric harvesters is proposed in this paper. Self-powered peak detection (PKD) and switch circuits are used to reduce quiescent current so that the backup or pre-charged power can be saved. A new low phase lag (LPL) PKD circuit is designed to improve the synchronous extraction efficiency, which only requires one detection capacitor to perform positive and negative PKD. The circuit can be set at general mode (G-mode) or LPL mode (LPL-mode). Under LPL-mode, the phase lag can be reduced typically by 50%, the synchronous extraction efficiency can obtained up to 94%, while the output power can reach 659~\mu \textW when the piezoelectric transducer original open-circuit voltage V\mathrm{ oc,org}=5 V, which is 3.56 times of that of full-bridge rectifier standard energy harvesting circuit at the maximum power point. The minimum harvesting startup voltage is 1.7 V and is independent of the energy storage capacitor voltage V\mathrm{ DC} . The harvesting efficiency can still reach 71.3% at V\mathrm{ oc,org}=5 V. This paper presents a piezoelectric-based power management solution for battery-free wireless remote switches (BWSs). The proposed BWS IC, including a piezoelectric (PE) energy harvester and a buck converter, can collect the energy generated by a single PE-button press, and then supply that energy to a wireless transmitter to send a message. By combining a rectifier using the synchronized switch harvesting on inductor technique and a 6:1 series–parallel switched-capacitor converter, the proposed PE energy harvester can maximize the collected amount of energy, while supplying it at a low output voltage. In addition, by employing a switching-based start-up scheme and a variable ON-time pulse-frequency modulation scheme, the proposed buck converter can reduce the loss associated with charging the output capacitor during start-up, and then deliver the largest possible energy to the load, while maintaining low voltage ripples and high-power efficiency. A prototype BWS IC fabricated with high-voltage 250-nm CMOS technology was shown to be capable of harvesting a total energy of 246~\mu \textJ from a single button-pressing of a 300-mm2 lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate PE disc. In this paper, a novel thermoelectric energy harvesting system with a reconfigurable array of thermoelectric generators (TEGs), which requires neither an inductor nor a flying capacitor, is proposed. The proposed architecture can accomplish maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and voltage conversion simultaneously via the reconfiguration of the TEG array, and demonstrate significantly improved power conversion efficiency over the conventional switching converter and switched-capacitor architectures. Two systematical scaling approaches—powers-of-two scaling and maximum-factor scaling—are presented and analyzed to serve as the design guideline, catering for reconfigurable TEG arrays of different sizes. In order to optimize the chip area required, a custom-designed, multi-level hierarchy and systematically scalable switch array that requires a reasonable number of switches is also developed to enable the reconfiguration of the TEG array. The 16-node and 12-node versions of the proposed system have been implemented in a standard 0.35- \mu \textm CMOS process. This paper presents a piezoelectric energy harvesting circuit, which integrates a Synchronized Switch Harvesting on Inductor (SSHI) circuit and an active rectifier. The major design challenge of the SSHI method is flipping the capacitor voltage at optimal times. The proposed SSHI circuit inserts an active diode on each resonant loop, which ensures flipping of the capacitor voltage at optimal times and eliminates the need to tune the switching time. The diodes of the SSHI circuit are also used as a rectifier to further simplify the controller. The key advantage of the proposed circuit is a simple controller, which leads to low power dissipation of the proposed circuit to result in high efficiency. The proposed circuit is self-powered and capable of starting even when the battery is completely drained. The circuit was fabricated in BiCMOS 0.25~\mu \text m technology with a die size of 0.98 \times 0.76 mm2. Measured results indicate that the proposed circuit increases the amount of power harvested from a piezoelectric cantilever by 2.1 times when compared with a full bridge (FB) rectifier and achieves a power conversion efficiency of 85%. Energy harvesting is an emerging technology for powering wireless sensor nodes, enabling battery-free operation of these devices. In an energy harvesting sensor, a power management circuit is required to regulate the variable harvested voltage to provide a constant supply rail for the sensor circuits. The power management circuit needs to be compact, efficient, and robust to the variations of the input voltage and load current. A closed-form power expression and custom control algorithm for regulation of a switched-capacitor DC-DC converter with optimal conversion efficiency are proposed in this paper. The proposed regulation algorithm automatically adjusts both the voltage gain and switching frequency of a switched-capacitor DC-DC converter based on its input voltage and load current, increasing the power efficiency across a wide input voltage range. The design and simulation of a fully integrated circuit based on the proposed power managing approach is presented. This power management circuit has been simulated in a 0.25 \mum standard CMOS process and simulation results confirm that with an input voltage ranging from 0.5 V to 2.5 V, the converter can generate a regulated 1.2 V output rail and deliver a maximum load current of 100 \muA. This paper presents a highly efficient, ultra-low-voltage active full wave rectifier. A two-stage concept is used including a first passive stage and only one active diode as second stage. A bulk-input comparator working in the subthreshold region is used to drive the switch of the active diode. The voltage drop over the rectifier is some tens of millivolt, which results in voltage and power efficiencies of over 90%. The design was successfully implemented in an 0.35~\mu \m CMOS technology. The measured power consumption of the comparator is 266 nW@500 mV and the minimum operating voltage is 380 mV. Input voltages with frequencies up to 10 kHz can be rectified. In this article, first integrated circuit (IC) implementation of parallel synchronized switching harvesting on inductor (p-SSHI) is presented for triboelectric energy harvester targeting 1 Hz to 5 Hz mechanical motions. It is accompanied by on-chip buck and switched capacitor DC-DC converters, all capable of handling 70 V levels. Unlike piezoelectric harvesters, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can produce very high open-circuit voltages; thus, the proposed system utilizes this property within the technology limits to maximize the extracted power. An in-house manufactured TENG using steel and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is modeled for sub-5 Hz motions. The energy is extracted and stored in an external capacitance until its voltage reaches 70 V, which is achieved in three press-and-release mechanical cycles. 70-to-2 V down conversion is carried on by 70-to-10 V buck converter followed by a 10-to-2 V switched capacitor DC-DC converter. A chip is manufactured in $0.18~\mu \text{m}$ HV BCD process with an active area of 6.25 mm2. An active diode IC-based full-wave charge pump is presented. It interfaces to a vibration harvester designed for low acceleration non-periodic bridge vibrations. The charge pump’s unique architecture uses only two comparators to switch the charge pump’s eight stages. This architecture reduces power and allows for a novel passive diode switching technique that also enables a reduction in the turn-on voltage. This switching technique initially functions based only on the AC input without a DC supply. This architecture is used to enable cold start-up using the charge pump’s external 100~\mu \textF capacitors. These large capacitors create a stable power supply for start-up from one low voltage AC input based off of bridge vibrations that are random and infrequent. Its rectification circuitry is fabricated in 180 nm CMOS on a 1.2 mm2 die. The circuit inputs, generated using a shaker table, are periodic sine-waves or non-periodic mechanical frequency up-converted vibration harvester outputs. Measurements show that the diode drop reduction allows cold start-up and boosting to >1.5 V with low power ( \sim 8.5~\mu \textW ) non-periodic harvester outputs or 220 mV open circuit voltage periodic (~100 Hz) inputs. A single-cycle criterion maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is proposed to eliminate the need for bulky on-chip capacitors in the energy harvesting system for Internet of Everything (IoE). The conventional time-domain MPPT features ultra-low power consumption; however, it also requires a nanofarad-level capacitor for fine time resolution. The proposed maximum power monitoring does not rely on the time-domain, but on logic criterion that can be simply determined by a finite-state machine where the maximum photovoltaic (PV) power occurs at minimum conversion ratio and maximum switching frequency. Single-cycle is used as the criterion to determine the magnitude of the output power. Practical concerns, such as self-startup and self-sustaining capabilities are here addressed by proper design of the reconfigurable switched capacitor power converter. A hysteretic control not only regulates the output, but also avoids the loading condition in IoE applications. This harvester simultaneously addresses the challenges including self-startup, self-sustaining capability, and regulated output without using a storage capacitor. Compared with various PV cells, the power conversion efficiency has a peak value of 72%, which remains above 60% for a wide harvesting voltage and power range. The chip area is as small as 0.552 mm2. A high efficiency, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) power management unit (PMU), with 3.6 \mmb\mu\bf W quiescent power, aimed at a thermoelectric generator (TEG) array is presented. The proposed energy harvesting PMU is made up of a boost converter with a cascaded capacitor-less low drop-out (CL-LDO) voltage regulator. The segmented approach allows the PMU to match the TEG array's changing dynamic series resistance via the boost converter and simultaneously provide voltage regulation with adaptive, high switching noise rejection via the CL-LDO. The boost converter's switching frequency (f{sw}) is tracked via a Sense-and-Control loop which modifies the CL-LDO's power supply rejection (PSR) characteristics to place a notch in the PSR transfer function around the average f{sw}. Experimental results show an overall system efficiency better than 57% @ 1.6 V output voltage, PSR of 40 dB at f{sw}, and a notch-tuning range of 15–65 kHz. A self-sustainable sensing platform powered entirely by small-scale benthic microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for oceanic sensing applications is presented. An ultra-low power chip featuring an ARM Cortex-M0 processor, 3 kB of SRAM, and power management unit (PMU) is designed to consume 11 nW in sleep mode for perpetual sensing operation. The PMU includes a switched-capacitor DC/DC converter designed for efficient energy harvesting and step-down conversion for a wide range of input and output power. A small-scale MFC with 21.3 cm^2 anode surface area was connected to the PMU to charge a thin-film battery of 1 mAh capacity. A 49.3-hour long-term experiment with 8-min sleep interval and 1-s wake-up time demonstrated the sustainability of system-on-mud concept. During sleep mode operation, the system charges the 4 V battery at 380 nA from the micro-MFC generating 5.4 \muW of power, which allows up to 20 mA of active mode current with net energy neutrality.
