This paper summarizes the work performed by the Task Force —within Performance Characteristic Subcommittee of IEEE PES Transformers Committee— to investigate potential revisions to IEEE Std C57.142-2010. Although the scope of this document does not implicitly exclude HV and EHV systems, the existing document primarily includes examples and information on distribution voltage systems. A Task Force was formed to investigate the need to include information about power system transient events on HV systems more explicitly in this existing document. The Task Force was charged with the following tasks:-Establish system voltages encompassed by C57-142-2010 Guide. -Gather field data, reports, and literature on HV and EHV failures related to substation transients and transformer interaction. -Solicit input from the other technical committees on this subject. -Review IEC and CIGRE work in this area. -Recommend course of action on revision of the present Guide. -Recommend high level changes to the Guide. -Prepare final paper for the Subcommittee. In the course of this work several failure scenarios were identified. These are categorized and the failures are described in this paper. The final recommendations to the Subcommittee are summarized and recommendations are presented for the course of action on the revision/addition of HV and EHV material to the current C57.142 Guide. Since the wide application of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs), the power grid faces great challenges in the safe and stable operation due to their limited thermal capacity and weak anti-disturbance ability. During transient period, for example, a fault occurs in the transmission line, the VSG may lose the transient angle stability and provoke the current hard limit. Even if the fault is cleared by tripping of line, it still faces the problem of instability and voltage dips. To address this problem, in this paper, the post-fault large-signal model of VSG is derived first via the travelling waves based fault information acquisition. Subsequently, with the effect of both active and reactive power loops taken into account, a two-stage simultaneous control scheme is proposed for improving the transient stability of VSG, while considering the current limitation during fault state and voltage support after fault clearance. This method is fulfilled by mode switching and an additional feedback control based on the fault signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults is verified. Moreover, the application of the proposed method in a multiple VSGs system is also verified. This paper reports the application of silicon bipolar junction transistor (BJT) modeling techniques to the modeling of dynamic behavior of high-voltage 4H-SiC BJTs, and the experimental validation thereof. High-voltage silicon BJTs are impractical due to their low current gain that requires a bulky base driver. Emergence of high-voltage 4H-SiC vertical NPN BJTs with a tenfold higher gain enables the application of efficient drivers, with ratings close to those of IGBTs. This paper demonstrates the advantages offered by 4H-SiC BJTs by means of wide-scale measurements at 800 V and 10 A in a range of temperatures up to 175 °C and adjusted base driver switching rates. This paper shows that the turn-off storage delay in the SiC BJT is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the silicon device. It also shows that the turn-on switching transients of SiC device are by an order of magnitude and the turn-off transients are by two orders of magnitude faster than that of its silicon counterpart, resulting in a tenfold reduction of the switching energy. It also demonstrates the temperature dependence of switching transients of the silicon BJT, and the relative temperature-invariance of the SiC device's performance. This paper concludes with validation of the transient models for the 4H-SiC NPN BJT, showing that the model is sufficiently accurate for transient switching and loss calculations. The three-phase dual active bridge (3p-DAB) converter is a promising topology for high power dc–dc conversion due to advantages of bidirectional power flow, inherent soft-switching capability, and reduced filter volume. This paper presents comprehensive analysis of the duty cycle control (DCC) for optimizing the performance of the 3p-DAB. Based on DCC, an optimized modulation strategy is proposed to minimize the conduction losses of the 3p-DAB in the whole load range. The proposed modulation strategy extends the soft-switching range of the 3p-DAB with large voltage variations simultaneously. It is established through loss analysis that the proposed modulation strategy boosts the efficiency of the 3p-DAB, especially at low loads. When the duty cycles change fast as a result of the abruptly changed transmission power, the transformer currents can become unbalanced, leading to the magnetic bias and oscillations in dc currents. This paper further proposes a fast transient current control (FTCC) method for the 3p-DAB with variable duty cycles. The FTCC enables the converter to transfer from one steady state to another within about one-third switching period, hence balancing the transformer currents rapidly and avoiding oscillations in dc currents. The device-level real-time simulation of power converters is constrained by the contradiction between the required short simulation time step to describe the transient behaviors and the large computational amount caused by the nonlinearities of switches’ models. In this paper, a novel low-latency device-level power converter modeling approach is proposed for field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based real-time simulation. A piecewise linear insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)/diode transient model is proposed based on the inductive switching behaviors. The switching transient is modeled into four phases, which are identified by the boundaries between three operating regions of IGBT and between two operating modes of a diode. Moreover, each phase is approximated by a linear continuous behavior in order to reduce the real-time computational amounts. Accompanied by the effective boundary identification, the device-level IGBT/diode model can be efficiently integrated into the real-time simulation with low computational latency. A dc–dc–ac topology model is implemented on the FPGA-based real-time platform, as a case study to verify the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed approach. With the help of circuit partitioning techniques, the device-level converter model can be simulated with a 50-ns time step on FPGA. This paper presents a methodology for generating restoration sequences in distribution systems and microgrids with emphasis on deriving optimal switching times for remote control switches. Microgrid architecture considered are assumed to be operating in islanded single master mode. Control methods for handling the unbalance inherent in distribution systems using single-phase controlled PQ inverters were developed and incorporated in the proposed method. The problem of considering simultaneously both energy optimization and dynamic stability of the system, which is lacking in existing methods, was addressed by studying the transient behavior of microgrids based on extended electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) simulations and then approximate and incorporate these behaviors into the optimization formulation for restoration. The approach is based on multi-objective optimization of final restored load and total restoration time. The methodology was studied on a modified IEEE 123 node test feeder. An EMTP simulation in PSCAD of the formed microgrids was used to validate the accuracy of the dynamic and steady-state characteristics of the resulting systems. By considering the transient behavior of distributed generators (DGs) during restoration, a better restoration sequence that does not trigger protection relays could be realized. Switching of shunt capacitors can cause transient overvoltage. The voltages are traditionally evaluated with electromagnetic transients (EMT) simulation programs. It is a very time-consuming process mainly due to the need to convert a power-flow (or short-circuit) case to the EMT case. This paper proposes an idea to conduct capacitor switching studies directly inside commercial power-flow/short-circuit tools such as PSS/E, thus avoiding the data-conversion process. The idea is to conduct switching studies in the frequency domain. The frequency response of the study network is determined using the short-circuit solution engine of the host commercial software. This paper presents the theory, unique issues, and implementation details of the idea. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results with those of the EMT simulations. Middle-point inductance ${{\boldsymbol L}_{{\boldsymbol {\text{middle}}}}}$ can be introduced in multiple-chip power module package designs. In this paper, the effect of middle-point inductance on switching transients is analyzed first using a frequency-domain analysis. Then a dedicated multiple-chip power module is fabricated with the capability of varying ${{\boldsymbol L}_{{\boldsymbol {\text{middle}}}}}$ , and extensive switching tests are conducted to evaluate the middle-point inductance's impact. Experiment result shows that the active mosfet's turn-on loss decreases at higher values of ${{\boldsymbol L}_{{\boldsymbol {\text{middle}}}}}$ , while its turn-off loss increases. Detailed analysis of this loss variation is presented. In addition to the switching loss variation, it is also observed that different peak voltage stresses are imposed on the active switch and antiparallel diode during the switching transients. Specifically, in the case of lower mosfet's turn-off, the maximum voltage of the lower mosfet increases as ${{\boldsymbol L}_{{\boldsymbol {\text{middle}}}}}$ goes up; however, the peak voltage of the antiparallel diode decreases significantly. The induced voltage spikes during upper mosfet turn-on process is also evaluated, and an opposite trend is observed experimentally. Analysis of the voltage overshoot variation is discussed. Flyback converters with universal serial bus power delivery (USB-PD) specification are widely used in low-power adapter application. The wide output voltage range operation of USB-PD makes the loop gain vary under different working conditions. To ensure stability in all working conditions, the loop gain has to be compensated based on the worst case of control-to-output transfer function. However, in other conditions, the crossover frequencies of loop gain are sacrificed, resulting in poor transient responses. This paper proposes an adaptive variable-frequency peak current mode control with constant crossover frequency to mitigate the tradeoff between stability and transient response while possessing the variable frequency characteristic to improve light load efficiency. The adaptive control law is derived from the proposed small-signal model. Experimental and simulation results verify the analysis. Traditional control strategy for a power decoupling circuit typically involves a dedicate ripple power control loop, which makes it hard to achieve satisfied transient performance. Meanwhile, traditional single-phase ac–dc converters achieve active power decoupling function with extra power switches, which inevitably increased the cost of the system. In this paper, a controller based on automatic power decoupling concept is proposed for a dependent power decoupling circuit with no extra switches. Compared with the existing methods, the system controlled by the proposed controller has superior transient performance with simplified controller's structure. The controller parameter's design procedures will also be illustrated step by step with the help of the bode diagram. This paper explores the large-signal and small-signal dynamics of a series-capacitor (SC) buck-type converter and introduces an optimal closed-loop control scheme to accommodate both the steady-state and transient modes. As opposed to a conventional buck converter, where time-optimal control is realized by a single on–off cycle, in the SC-buck topology, there is a need to distribute the switching phases to satisfy the charge balance of the SC. The new control method merges a voltage-mode controller for the steady-state operation and a nonlinear, state-plane based transient-mode controller for load transients. A detailed principle of the operation of the SC-buck converter is provided and explained through an average-behavioral model and state-plane analysis. The operation of the controller is experimentally verified on a 20 W 12 V-to-1 V converter, demonstrating voltage-mode control operation as well as minimum-deviation and time-optimal responses for load transients. This paper presents the analysis of possible transient overvoltages that can be generated during vacuum circuit-breaker (VCB) operation at the connection point of a photovoltaic powerplant. A typical switching event that is related to the VCB concerns energization and de-energization of the unloaded transformer. However, at the typical photovoltaic powerplant, the transformer is fed by an inverter equipped with LC (or LCL) filters that are necessary for limitation of harmonics and ripple in voltage and current. From the point of view of switching operations, the inductance and capacitance of the low-voltage (LV)-side connected filter affect the natural frequency of the transformer, which is reflected by different transient system response during VCB operation. In this paper, laboratory measurement of overvoltages generated during distribution transformer switching by means of VCBs is analyzed. The impact of the LC filter connected at the LV side on the overvoltages suppression was studied. This paper highlights an immediate need for renewable generation developers, manufacturers, utilities and industry standardization institutes to jointly address a challenge of capacitor switching transient immunity in inverter-based wind or solar farms. The need was identified from wide-area operation records which showed partial or full generation loss in coincidence with routine utility-owned capacitor switching. The lack of a clear industry guideline has caused confusion to all involved parties. This paper recommends all entities to address this challenge collaboratively through enhanced equipment specification, design, and test before a well-defined industry guideline becomes available. Linear small-signal models of a dc–dc converter often ignore switching dynamics; thus such models are insufficient to fully explore the performance objective under large signal transients. Linear/nonlinear hybrid controllers are promising alternatives; however, they require structurally different hardware resources along with extra antiwindup arrangements. This paper proposes a geometric tuning method in a digitally current-mode-controlled buck converter under continuous-conduction mode. This considers a proportional-integral voltage controller along with a load current feedforward in the digital domain, while the inductor current has a traditional analog implementation. This resembles a first-order switching surface with near load-invariant regulation; thus a (fixed) small integral gain is sufficient to minimize the steady-state error. Using phase-plane geometry, the objective is to tune the controller gain in a way to achieve proximate time optimal recovery using a fixed-frequency pulse-width modulator and also to retain the large-signal stability. Starting of an induction motor is a process that creates many challenging problems for the motor and operations of the power system. The induction motor can be damaged, characteristics can be changed, and performances of the motor can be worsened. Having a significantly higher starting current than the rated current can produce mechanical and thermal stress on the motor and the loads. High-voltage fluctuations, dips, and sags can occur in electrical power systems associated with the motor. Many different methods have been developed to address particular induction motor starting problems associated with motor size and the stability of the connected network. A soft starter is a relatively new device and is used for smooth start of induction motors, particularly medium voltage motors, and adds flexibility in the operation and the interoperability. It is an integration of complex power control apparatus for reducing starting current in a medium voltage solid state soft starter. Electrical transients during switching ON and OFF processes are a major concern for the silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs), current rise rate during switching ON—di/dt, and over voltages during switching OFF—dv/dt. During the transient process, the currents rise and di/dt passing through the SCRs can damage them. This paper is focused on identification of parameters of the transient process, protection, and limitation of di/dt by inserting an inductor in the soft starter circuit to limit di/dt to a safe level. This paper investigates the conditions for transformer winding resonances with an emphasis on oscillatory excitation voltages originating from various switching events in the power grids. A section of the Eastern Regional Power Grid in India has been simulated in this paper by using the Alternative Transient Program for the purpose of defining high-frequency transient voltages which may occur during various switching events. The investigation reveals that such oscillatory voltages could excite natural frequencies of a 400/220/132-kV power transformer, which closely matches the terminal excitation frequencies. Short time Fourier transform (STFT) has been used to analyze the frequency contents of the oscillatory terminal excitation as well as the voltage response of the windings. The results of the STFT confirmed the presence of resonant frequency in the oscillatory terminal voltage and in the 400-kV main and tap changer windings of the transformer. It has been demonstrated that the voltage stresses in the windings under certain critical switching operations can exceed the stresses developed under the standard 1.2/50-\mus lightning impulse at the transformer's basic insulation level voltage. The reduction in winding voltage stresses under resonance is possible by deploying some remedial measures involving winding design modifications which have also been suggested in this paper. Currently, many large and complex systems, such as telecommunication systems, power systems, and automated manufacture systems, require their distributed clocks to be synchronized to the master clock. This paper discusses implementation of a distributed embedded time-synchronized system, based on the IEEE 1588 standard. Two important requirements exist in time synchronization. One is that the clocks be synchronized at maximum speed. The other is that the clocks operate at optimum precision and accuracy over the long term. This paper proposes a switching controller, which combines a fuzzy control scheme and a traditional proportional integral (PI) control scheme to meet the aforementioned two requirements. The traditional PI control scheme was used in the steady state, whereas the fuzzy control scheme was adopted in the transient stage. The experimental results showed that in the fuzzy control scheme, transient time, which is the length of time in the transient state, was reduced to 50% of the transient time in the PI control scheme. When medium-voltage reduced-voltage autotransformer (RVAT) motor starters fail, also referred to as Korndorfer starters, particularly ones in which there is no clear failure to the core or tap-to-tap but just layer-to-layer deep down in the windings, the results are almost always catastrophic. An offshore platform is used as an example to discuss site-specific solutions that are based on the recently developed switching transient analysis, sweep frequency-response analysis, and state-of-the-art electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation techniques. This paper will explain how the power system, interrupter, and transformer interact and outline the steps to solve this long-standing problem as well as present the newly applied solutions. The nonlinear junction capacitances of power devices are critical for the switching transient, which should be fully considered in the modeling and transient analysis, especially for high-frequency applications. The silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET combined with SiC Schottky Barrier Diode (SBD) is recognized as the proposed choice for high-power and high-frequency converters. However, in the existing SiC MOSFET models only the nonlinearity of gate-drain capacitance is considered meticulously, but the drain–source capacitance, which affects the switching commutation process significantly, is generally regarded as constant. In addition, the nonlinearity of diode junction capacitance is neglected in some simplified analysis. Experiments show that without full consideration of nonlinear junction capacitances, some significant deviations between simulated and measured results will emerge in the switching waveforms. In this paper, the nonlinear characteristics of drain–source capacitance in SiC MOSFET are studied in detail, and the simplified modeling methods for engineering applications are presented. On this basis, the SiC MOSFET model is improved and the simulation results with improved model correspond with the measured results much better than before, which verify the analysis and modeling. This paper presents an average-value model of a line-commutated converter-based HVDC system using dynamic phasors. The model represents the low-frequency dynamics of the converter and its ac and dc systems, and has lower computational requirements than a conventional electromagnetic-transient (EMT) switching model. The developed dynamic-phasor model is verified against an EMT model of the CIGRE HVDC Benchmark. Simulation results confirm the validity and accuracy of the average value model in predicting the low-frequency dynamics of the ac- and dc-side quantities. This paper introduces a practical modification of the buck converter and a complementary controller that are well suited for point of load applications with highly dynamic loads. The presented flyback-transformer-based buck (FTBB) converter has faster transient response than the conventional buck, allowing for a reduction in the output capacitance without penalty in the size of the magnetic core. During heavy-to-light load transients, the FTBB converter also recycles excess energy stored in the magnetic component, providing a useful energy savings mechanism. In this modification, the conventional buck inductor is replaced with the primary winding of the flyback transformer, an extra switch, and a set of small auxiliary switches on the secondary side. During heavy-to-light load transients, the inductor current is steered away from the output capacitor to the input port, achieving both energy recycling and savings due to reduced voltage overshoots. The light-to-heavy transient response is improved by reducing the equivalent inductance of the primary transformer winding to its leakage value. A mixed-signal current-programmed mode controller regulates operation of the converter. The controller provides minimum output voltage deviation and ensures seamless transitions between different operating modes. The performance of the FTBB converter is verified with a 6-to-1-V, 3-W, 390-kHz experimental prototype. In comparison with an equivalent buck converter, the experimental system has about three times smaller maximum output voltage deviation, allowing for the same output capacitor reduction and, for frequently changing loads, about 7% decrease in power losses. In this paper, a new noncommunication-based scheme is presented for the protection of three-terminal transmission lines. Using this scheme, simultaneous operation of circuit breakers (CBs) at all terminals is provided for all internal faults. This scheme can discriminate between external and internal faults based on initiated transients by faults, considering the high-stop filtering property of busbars through modeling their stray capacitances and employing a newly defined mathematical morphology (MM) filter to analyze the captured transients. Moreover, the transients generated by lightning or switching are identified and prohibited to enter the algorithm. The presented scheme has been applied on one of three-terminal lines in Iran's Transmission Grid. The effects of fault resistance, fault inception angle, (internal) fault location, and fault type on the performance of the proposed scheme are evaluated, where the high dependability, accuracy, and speed are verified. The maximum closed-loop bandwidth of a dc-dc converter is restricted to a fraction of its switching frequency when governed by a conventional average-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controller. Even an advanced geometric control is limited by internal slew rates. The bandwidth can reach or exceed the switching frequency through converter augmentation; however, this requires a nonlinear control algorithm and circuit arrangements. This paper considers methods of augmentation and control for a fast buck converter. Conditions for time-optimal transient recovery are obtained for both instantaneous and delayed transient disturbance detection. Design tradeoffs and control issues related to augmentation are considered here. The main switch is controlled using a fixed frequency PWM current-mode control with load current feedforward, and augmented switches are controlled using frequency-limited bang-bang control based on a geometric approach. A small-signal model is obtained and extended control bandwidth is demonstrated. Fast transient recovery is achieved for both single- and two-resistance augmentation. A prototype augmented buck converter is tested. Output voltage and inductor current overshoot and undershoot can be lowered more than with previous methods. Switching transients associated with circuit breakers have been observed for many years. With the widespread application of vacuum breakers for transformer switching, recently, this phenomenon has been attributed to a significant number of transformer failures. Vacuum circuit breaker switching of electric arc furnace and ladle melt furnace (LMF) transformers raises concern because of their inductive currents. High-frequency transients and overvoltages result when the vacuum breaker exhibits virtual current chop and multiple re-ignitions. This paper will present a detailed case study of vacuum breaker switching of a new LMF transformer involving current chopping and restrike simulations using the electromagnetic transients program. A technique that involves a combination of surge arresters and snubbers will be applied to the LMF to show that the switching transients can be successfully mitigated. Electric power distribution systems of many commercial and industrial sites often employ variable frequency drives and other loads that internally utilize dc. Such loads are often based on front-end line-commutated rectifiers. The detailed switch-level models of such rectifier systems can be readily implemented using a number of widely available digital programs and transient simulation tools, including the Electromagnetic Transient (EMT)-based programs and Matlab/Simulink. To improve the simulation efficiency for the system-level transient studies with a large number of such subsystems, the so-called dynamic average models have been utilized. This paper presents the average-value modeling methodologies for the conventional three-phase (six-pulse) front-end rectifier loads. We demonstrate the system operation and the dynamic performance of the developed average models in discontinuous and continuous modes, as well as under balanced and unbalanced operation. In this paper, a new method is proposed that can be used to discriminate faults from switching transients. The method is primarily intended for use in systems where fast fault detection and fast fault clearing before the first peak of the fault current are required. An industrial system, in which high short-circuit power is desired but in which high short-circuit currents cannot be tolerated is an example of such a system. A phase-locked loop (PLL) is used to perform the discrimination. Computer simulations have been performed and it has been demonstrated that the output of the PLL is completely different for a fault compared to a switching transient. It is difficult to design a standard gate driver for optimal switching control of a static induction thyristor (SI-Thy) because of its unique internal structure and the direct commutation switching characteristic between the gate and cathode terminals during the transient turn-on and turn-off switching phases. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple and effective gate driver for achieving optimal fast turn-on and stable switching operations in an SI-Thy under hard-switching conditions. To achieve faster turn-on switching time with shorter gate delay time, impedance matching between the SI-Thy and the turn-on driving circuit component in the gate driver can be realized with additional circuit modification through this paper. To ensure higher stabilities in the turn-off switching phase, forced commutation techniques and additional auxiliary circuits in the gate driver have been devised to suppress the latchup and to eliminate potential ringing possibility. We have demonstrated that our designed and tested gate driver for realizing optimal switching characteristics of an SI-Thy is effective, particularly in the gate driving circuits for various pulsed-power switching applications. Switching transients associated with circuit breakers have been observed for many years. Recently, this phenomenon has been attributed to a significant number of transformer failures involving primary circuit-breaker switching. These transformer failures had common contributing factors such as the following: 1) primary vacuum or SF-6 breaker; 2) short cable or bus connection to transformer; and 3) application involving dry-type or cast-coil transformers and some liquid-filled ones. This paper will review these recent transformer failures due to primary circuit-breaker switching transients to show the severity of damage caused by the voltage surge and discuss the common contributing factors. Next, switching transient simulations in the electromagnetic transients program will give case studies which illustrate how breaker characteristics of current chopping and restrike combine with critical circuit characteristics to cause transformer failure. Design and installation considerations will be addressed, particularly the challenges of retrofitting a snubber to an existing facility with limited space. Finally, several techniques and equipment that have proven to successfully mitigate the breaker switching transients will be presented, including surge arresters, surge capacitors, snubbers, and these in combination. This paper describes two new approaches for the determination of the direction of switched capacitor banks as well as an efficient technique for estimating the distance of switched capacitors from the monitoring location in distribution systems. At first, two new indices based on branch voltage and current changes immediately after the capacitor switching instant are proposed for determining the direction of switched capacitor banks. The wavelet transform is used to detect the exact instant of switching. Then, a new technique based on linear circuit theory is proposed to estimate the distance of the switched capacitor bank from the monitoring location using capacitor switching transient data. Simulation results show that the error of the estimated distance is acceptable. A combination of the approaches for direction finding and the technique for distance estimation provide a novel method for determining the location of switched capacitor banks in real distribution systems. The method is valid in all normal, back-to-back, and abnormal switching of wye- and delta-configured capacitor banks. Also, the size of the capacitor bank has no effect on method accuracy. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated by using the IEEE 13-bus and 34-bus distribution systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
