This paper proposes a voltage-source parallel resonant Class E inverter. The proposed circuit has a shunt capacitor including parasitic capacitance of a switching device and achieves zero-voltage switching and zero-voltage derivative switching at turning-on like a classical Class E inverter. Therefore, high power conversion efficiency is achieved under high operating frequency. Unlike the other Class E inverters, the proposed circuit has no choke inductor or dc blocking capacitor. Moreover, it has a parallel resonant tank unlike the classical Class E inverter. Thus, a circuit protection is not required in a wireless power transfer system. Circuit analysis, circuit simulations, and circuit experiments were carried out. In order to provide high and extendable power levels for inductive power transfer (IPT) system, a parallel multi-inverter system based on modular inverter is presented. Various power requirements can be implemented by an adjustment of the number of paralleled inverters, which provides a high modularity. A master−slave scheme is employed for the switching-driver signals of parallel inverters, where one acts as a leader while others act as followers. Despite the master−slave scheme, the proposed circuit topology has natural robustness because of the equality in terms of the hardware configuration of each modular inverter. For proper parameters, the output phase (current lagging corresponding voltage) of an inverter is lower than the average of output phase of all inverters, when its output voltage lags behind others, and vice versa. Based on this approach, PI controllers are designed to implement phase synchronization for output voltages of all inverters. An IPT prototype supplied by the proposed parallel multi-inverter with three inverters was designed, built, and tested. Experiments show that the proposed parallel multi-inverter system has not only good circulating current suppression capacity but also excellent performance of phase synchronization. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. In this paper, a new Lyapunov-based model predictive controller is proposed for a 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) grid-connected inverter. A cost function of the proposed model predictive controller is designed from the system stability point of view, inspired by the Lyapunov control theory. The proposed controller eliminates the need for gains that are associated with cost function coefficients, as seen in classical model predictive control based controllers. Therefore, the control design problem is significantly simplified. In addition, the average switching frequency is also reduced, as shown in both simulation and experimental results, leading to a reduction in switching losses. Simulation and experimental tests, on a PUC7 lab prototype, demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control system, in terms of high disturbance rejection, robustness to parameter mismatches, and fast dynamic response. Three-level inverter has an outstanding performance and is more advantageous in the switching vector selection than two-level inverter. In particular, the neutral-point voltage unbalance and common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction of three-level inverter should be carefully regulated for the appropriate operation, both of which, however, are mutually coupled resulting that the conventional space vector modulation (SVM) scheme cannot deal with them properly. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an improved space vector modulation (ISVM) technique to reduce the CMV and neutral-point voltage imbalance simultaneously. The generating mechanism of neutral-point voltage oscillation is derived. Based on the analysis, the proposed ISVM method adopts four voltage vectors (large, medium, small, and zero vectors) with adjusted dwell times to eliminate the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage. Considering the occurrence of neutral-point voltage disturbances, the dc neutral-point unbalance voltage is controlled by selecting the P-type or N-type small vector and adjusting the dwell times of small vectors for neutral-point voltage recovery. In addition, a novel switching sequence arrangement method with the minimal number of switches transition in one switching cycles and between switching cycles is proposed to reduce the total switching loss. Theoretical analysis and verification results show that the proposed ISVM scheme can reduce the magnitude of CMV to half of value using the conventional SVM, and an accurate control of ac and dc unbalanced neutral-point voltage can be obtained. The magnetic resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a class E inverter has wide application in mid-range power transmission, especially for several megahertz scenario. However, it is cumbersome for the existing modeling and analysis methods to obtain the analytical solution to the system variables, which limits the evaluation of system characteristic. This paper proposes a nonlinear mathematical model for the WPT system with a class E inverter. The equivalent small parameter method (ESPM) is first adopted to solve the proposed six-order nonlinear model, and symbolic-form steady-state periodic solutions are yielded. During the whole solving process, only three iteration steps are needed for the proposed method. Compared with other existing modeling and analysis methods, the symbolic periodic results acquired by the ESPM exhibit sufficient accuracy by virtue of the combination of more higher harmonics. In this paper, a generalized switching modification method is proposed to reduce the root-mean-square (rms) current flowing into a dc-link capacitor in a dc–dc–ac structure consisting of a boost converter and a three-phase inverter. To analyze the current flowing into the capacitor, we analyze the currents at the respective converter and inverter sides. Based on this analysis, we derive an analytical method to find the modification time between the converter and inverter pulsewidth modulation (PWM) carriers through a Fourier series and approximation to facilitate real-time implementation. Real-time implementation of the modification time calculated by the derived method is described. To verify the validity of the proposed method, experimental results are presented based on a 1-kVA dc–dc–ac prototype. The proposed method has a better capacitor rms current reduction performance than the conventional method in various inverter power factors and PWM strategies. In this paper, a new space vector pulse width modulation method to extend the linear modulation range of a cascaded five level inverter topology with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the inverter can be controlled linearly and the peak phase fundamental output voltage of the inverter can be increased from 0.577 to 0.637 V\text{dc} without increasing the dc bus voltage and without exceeding the induction motor voltage rating. This new technique makes use of cascaded inverter pole voltage redundancy and property of the space vector structure for its operation. Using this, the induction motor drive can be operated till the full speed range (0–50 Hz) with the elimination of lower order harmonics in the phase voltage and phase current. The five-level topology presented in this paper is realized by cascading a two-level inverter and two full bridge modules with floating capacitors. In this paper, an improved direct torque control (DTC) technique of a two-level inverter-fed five-phase induction motor (FPIM) drive for low-speed operation is presented. The operation of the FPIM with distributed winding requires the elimination of third-harmonic voltage, which, if not taken care of, would generate distorted stator current. For this, the concept of virtual vectors (VVs) is utilized. Before selecting the VVs for the DTC operation, a theoretical analysis is carried out to find the effects of these VVs on the torque and flux response of the FPIM under different speed and loading conditions. It is found that the rotor speed plays a crucial role in the selection of VVs. A particular VV has different effects on the torque change as speed varies. This analysis helps in the selection of VVs, hysteresis torque bandwidth, flux bandwidth, and efficient formation of sectors. Furthermore, in this paper, the performance of the FPIM during low-speed operation is improved by avoiding the demagnetization of the stator flux. Increasing demands for power supplies have contributed to the population of high-frequency ac (HFAC) power distribution system (PDS), and in order to increase the power capacity, multilevel inverters (MLIs) frequently serving as the high-frequency (HF) source-stage have obtained a prominent development. Existing MLIs commonly use more than one voltage source or a great number of power devices to enlarge the level numbers, and HF modulation (HFM) methods are usually adopted to decrease the total harmonic distortion (THD). All of these have increased the complexity and decreased the efficiency for the conversion from dc to HF ac. In this paper, a nine-level inverter employing only one input source and fewer components is proposed for HFAC PDS. It makes full use of the conversion of series and parallel connections of one voltage source and two capacitors to realize nine output levels, thus lower THD can be obtained without HFM methods. The voltage stress on power devices is relatively relieved, which has broadened its range of applications as well. Moreover, the proposed nine-level inverter is equipped with the inherent self-voltage balancing ability, thus the modulation algorithm gets simplified. The circuit structure, modulation method, capacitor calculation, loss analysis, and performance comparisons are presented in this paper, and all the superior performances of the proposed nine-level inverter are verified by simulation and experimental prototypes with rated output power of 200 W. Three-phase voltage-source inverters typically feature a significant amount of dc energy storage to maintain a stiff dc bus. In these cases, the dc-link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. In this paper, we propose to reduce the size of the dc-link capacitor dramatically to store enough energy to provide just one high-frequency switching cycle of the ac output power. The dc bus is no longer stiff, and hence, classical sinusoidal pulse-width modulation cannot be used. However, the stored energy modulation (SEM) proposed herein synthesizes high-quality sinusoidal output voltage waveforms, even with such tiny dc-link capacitors. In SEM, the switching intervals of the interconnecting switches are carefully determined nonlinear functions of various operating parameters such as reactive component sizing, switching frequency, load levels, etc. This paper presents the analytical and detailed design development of the SEM approach along with circuit simulation, experimental results, and comparative evaluation of a dc-to-three-phase system example. One of the main challenges of the solid-state transformer (SST) lies in the implementation of the dc–dc stage. In this paper, a quadruple-active-bridge (QAB) dc–dc converter is investigated to be used as a basic module of a modular three-stage SST. Besides the feature of high power density and soft-switching operation (also found in others converters), the QAB converter provides a solution with reduced number of high-frequency transformers, since more bridges are connected to the same multiwinding transformer. To ensure soft switching for the entire operation range of the QAB converter, the triangular current-mode modulation strategy, previously adopted for the dual-active-bridge converter, is extended to the QAB converter. The theoretical analysis is developed considering balanced (equal power processed by the medium-voltage (MV) cells) and unbalanced (unequal power processed by the MV cells) conditions. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge Z-source inverter is proposed. The proposed topology has only one impedance network. Unlike to the conventional half-bridge inverter, the proposed topology can provide zero voltage level at the output. It also increases output voltage level and stabilizes it in the desired value. Capacitor voltage stress in the proposed topology is low, and, therefore, nominal voltage of capacitor and cost decreases. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the proposed inverter in two new operations which are named synchronous operation of diodes and asynchronous operation of diodes is conducted based on mathematics calculations. A method to obtain high-voltage gains by cascading the Z-network and combining middle inductors is presented that leads to cost, size, and weight reduction. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. This paper proposes a dual-space vector control scheme for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) drive fed by the dual inverter with a single dc supply. Potential zero-sequence current in the open-end winding drive system has to be considered since it causes circulating current in the winding and leads to high current stress of power semiconductor devices and high losses. Zero-sequence current in open-end winding ac motor drives is usually caused by the zero-sequence voltage, and therefore switching combinations which do not produce zero-sequence voltage are used to synthesize the reference voltage in existing methods. But even so, the zero-sequence voltage can also be produced by the dead time of the inverter. In order to suppress zero-sequence current in the OEW-PMSM drive, a dual-space vector control scheme is proposed and a novel dual-inverter space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) with the zero-sequence voltage reference is employed to regulate system zero-sequence voltage in this paper. Compared with existing dual inverter PWM strategies, the novel algorithm build a regulation mechanism for the zero-sequence voltage. In this paper, the near-state pulsewidth modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be implemented in dual-voltage-source inverter (VSI) fed open-end motor, is proposed with the aim of mitigating low-order harmonics (which lead to current total harmonic distortion (THD) minimization). The following two proposed methods are studied in detail: 1) fixing phase angle displacement (PAD) between two VSIs to 120° while adjusting the modulation index (MI); and 2) fixing MI to the predetermined value (wherein low-order harmonics are highly mitigated) while adjusting PAD. Furthermore, the proposed approaches enhance efficiency by limiting the number of commutations within the switching interval. The paper also presents the mathematical approaches to accurately determine low-order harmonic components and switching losses for dual-VSI structure. The experimental setup, including dual-VSI and open-end induction motor, is assembled in the laboratory to evaluate performance of the proposed method. Based on the Z-source inverter, this paper proposes a novel commutation torque ripple reduction strategy for brushless DC motor (BLDCM). The proposed strategy employs the same modulation mode in both the normal conduction period and the commutation period, and the commutation torque ripple is reduced by regulating the shoot-through vector and active vector duty cycles. The proposed detection method acquires the end point of commutation by comparing the clamped terminal voltages with reference zero level, and the signal-noise-ratio of the detection is improved by avoiding the attenuation of the terminal voltages. Furthermore, a certain pulse width of the shoot-through vector can not only reduce the commutation torque ripple but also provide a new opportunity to detect the end point of commutation. Moreover, Z-source inverter provides the buck–boost ability for BLDCM drive system, then the dc voltage utilization can be improved, and the safety of the drive system can also be improved. In several electrical dc–ac power conversions, the ac output voltage is higher than the input voltage. If a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is used, then an additional dc–dc boosting stage is required to overcome the step-down VSI limitations. Recently, several impedance source converters are gaining higher attentions [1], [2], as they are able to provide buck-boost capability in a single conversion stage. This paper proposes the merging of the boost stage and the VSI stage in a single stage dc–ac power conversion, denoted as split-source inverter (SSI). The proposed topology requires the same number of active switches of the VSI, three additional diodes, and the same eight states of a conventional space-vector modulation. It also shows some merits compared to Z-source inverters, especially in terms of reduced switch voltage stress for voltage gains higher than 1.15. This paper presents the analysis of the SSI and compares different modulation schemes. Moreover, it presents a modified modulation scheme to eliminate the low frequency ripple in the input current and the voltage across the inverter bridge. The paper proposes a method of active switching harmonics current reduction in the dc-link capacitor of a two-level, three-phase, back-to-back converter. Based on the derived analytical solution for switching harmonic currents in the dc-link, it is shown that by specific control over the pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) carriers’ phase angles, the targeted harmonics of the rectifier and the inverter can be synchronized in phase such that their cancellation occurs in the dc-link capacitor. This synchronization is provided by harmonic phase feedback control. A three-step procedure to implement the method is detailed in the paper. Aimed at the problem that the auxiliary commutation circuit (ACC) of auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) inverters has a high loss in commutation processes, this paper presents a novel modulation strategy with shunt dead time based on a double ARCP (DARCP) inverter. In comparison with the original modulation strategy, this modulation strategy cannot only achieve soft switching for all switches, but also avoid the superposition of resonance current and load current at commutation moments in double ACCs (DACCs) and make the maximum current through DACCs approximately equal to load current in commutation processes. So, the circulating current loss in DACCs and the current stress of auxiliary switches can be effectively reduced. According to the equivalent circuits in different operation modes under the novel modulation strategy, this paper analyzes the operation principle, soft-switching implementation condition, and optimal parameter design procedure of the DARCP inverter. Finally, a 10-kW–16-kHz DARCP inverter prototype with insulated gate bipolar transistor-based switches is built. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters have been widely applied for power processing, and they are typically the stems of other types of converters, such as quasi-resonant, Z-source, and switched-inductor hybrid converters. Development of PWM converters has been spanning over a century, starting from the buck converter. The well-known PWM converters include buck, boost, buck–boost, Ćuk, single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC), zeta, Z-source, quasi-Z source, etc. Many attempts have been proposed to develop these converters based mostly on canonical cell concepts and by introducing extra LC filters to the cells. This paper presents an enhancement to the layer and graft schemes by introducing the ideas of dc voltage/current offsetting, capacitor/inductor component splitting, diode grafting, and inverse operation of PWM converters. The PWM converters, which can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), therefore can be synthesized systematically according to decoded transfer gains. Decoding and synthesizing PWM converters uniquely bridge transfer gains to converter topologies and provide readers a comprehensive understanding of PWM-converter evolution from the original converter, the buck converter. Additionally, in this paper, the Ćuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters all with the same transfer gain of $D/(1 - D)$ are proved to be equivalent to the buck–boost converter with an extra LC filter. For further illustrating the proposed approaches, various types of Z-source converters, switched-capacitor/switched-inductor hybrid converters, and a single-stage interleaved converter are reviewed, and new PWM converters are developed. The increasing interest in multiphase drive systems has led to the extension of inverter topologies and pulse width modulation (PWM) methods from three-phase to multiphase occasions. Carrier-based PWM (CPWM) dominates space vector PWM when the phase number increases, because of its simple computation and modular implementation. Although intensive work has been done on modifying PWM methods to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV), not enough work has been done on CPWM methods with CMV reduction for multiphase drives. This paper extends the phase-shifted sinusoidal PWM (PS-SPWM) method for five-phase and six-phase two-level voltage-source inverters (VSI) and employs the intersection-plotting method and Fourier analysis to reveal the nature of the CMV. Both experiment and simulation results comply with theoretical analysis that compared with the conventional SPWM, the PS-SPWM can effectively reduce the CMV in peak-to-peak value and RMS value, though it leads to a higher phase current distortion. Two three-level inverters driving an open-end winding induction motor can generate equivalent voltage waveforms as a single five-level inverter-based drive. In addition, it can bring in benefits such as reduced dc-link voltage, less number of devices, and fault-tolerant capability, which is favored in high-power motor drive applications. The main challenge with this type of configuration is the appearance of large zero-sequence current circulating between the two inverters, which generates extra losses in the switching devices and the motor as well as affects the normal operation of the machine. Another challenge is to balance the dc-link neutral point voltage of the two three-level inverters. This paper has proposed a simplified decoupled space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) strategy to eliminate the averaged zero-sequence voltage in each switching cycle by the placement of redundant vectors of each individual inverter using a time shift. Neutral point voltage balance is further achieved by adjusting the time duration of the redundant vectors. In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to operate this kind of drive configuration with a single dc power supply and achieve averaged zero-sequence voltage elimination and neutral-point voltage balancing at the same time. Paralleled inverters have the merits of high power rating, improved reliability, and convenient maintenance. However, zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) will occur and lead to current distortion and system loss. The ZSCC control is more complicated when three-level topology is utilized and paralleled number is increased. Therefore, this paper proposes a simplified ZSCC suppression scheme for multi-paralleled three-level T-type inverters (3LT2Is). A novel equivalent model is developed and the ZSCC controller based on the new model is easier to implement. Thus, the number of paralleled inverters can be increased without complicating the control scheme and the inverters could be switched on or off optionally. Besides, Feed-Forward (FF) strategy is adopted to eliminate the ZSCC spikes caused by symmetrical three-level space vector modulation. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM) and virtual space vector pulsewidth modulation (VSVPWM) for neutral point clamped three-level converter are reviewed briefly in this paper. A novel modulation strategy is proposed to maintain unconditional neutral point voltage balance under the full range of power factor and modulation index. The proposed PWM strategy is featured with three switching actions in one switching cycle, which is named 3SNPBPWM hereafter. In 3SNPBPWM, one phase is clamped to a certain level without switching action, and the other two phases have one and two switching actions in one switching cycle (SC), respectively. Moreover, a neutral point voltage recovery algorithm for 3SNPBPWM is also proposed. This paper proposes a dual-function dynamic voltage restorer (DFDVR) with fault current-limiting capability. The new topology can operate under different modes: the short-circuit fault current-limiting mode and the compensation mode for voltage fluctuation. Different functions of the DFDVR are achieved by controlling a brake chopper circuit and antiparallel thyristors. During fault conditions, the antiparallel thyristors are deactivated to protect the dc-side capacitor, and the duration of the on- and off-periods of the semiconductor switch in the brake chopper circuit is controlled to adjust fault current amplitudes. During voltage sags, the antiparallel thyristors are activated, and the brake chopper circuit is turned off by controlling the gate turn-off thyristor in the brake chopper circuit, thus making the DFDVR similar to a conventional DVR. The control scheme and optimal parameter selection of the DFDVR are provided. The design methodology of the DFDVR was verified through simulations performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. This paper presents a novel model predictive control (MPC) for the T-type single-phase three-level inverters. The cumbersome procedure in tuning of weighting factors is eliminated so that the implementation of the proposed MPC becomes easy. The constant switching frequency is achieved during the control implementation in order to facilitate the filter design. In order to optimize the distribution of the output current harmonics, multiple voltage vectors are employed in each control cycle with their application times setting inversely proportion to the respective cost function. In this paper, a new multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dc–dc converter with high step-up capability is proposed for wide power ranges. Also, in order to increase each output voltage, diode–capacitor voltage multiplier (VM) stages are utilized in the proposed converter. The number of input stages, output stages, and VM stages are arbitrary and dependent on design conditions. At first, the general structure of proposed MIMO converter is presented. Then, in order to explain the converter operation, we walk through the design of a 1-kW four-input two-output example, including loss and efficiency calculations. When fast voltage control is used in a power factor control, the ripple of the dc link causes current harmonics. This paper proposes a method to reduce the harmonic content of a fast voltage loop in a power factor correction, which can both produce low distortion during steady-state operation and fast recovery from a load transient. The performance is achieved by using a Takagi–Sugeno-type nonlinear controller for dc-link voltage control. The proposed nonlinear control is compared with linear proportional–integral (PI) control, which is tuned to meet the standardized regulations for the harmonic content in a 3-kW single phase power supply. The results show that the presented nonlinear voltage controller can maintain the dynamic performance of the linear control with reduced current harmonics. This paper presents a new reconfiguration module for asymmetrical multilevel inverters in which the capacitors are used as the dc links to create the levels for staircase waveforms. This configuration of the multilevel converter makes a reduction in dc sources. On the other hand, it is possible to generate 13 levels with lower dc sources. The proposed module of the multilevel inverter generates 13 levels with two unequal dc sources (2VDC and 1VDC). It also involves two chargeable capacitors and 14 semiconductor switches. The capacitors are self-charging without any extra circuit. The lower number of components makes it desirable to be used in wide range of applications. The module is schematized as two back-to-back T-type inverters and some other switches around it. Also, it can be connected as a cascade modular which leads to a modular topology with more voltage levels at higher voltages. The proposed module makes the inherent creation of the negative voltage levels without any additional circuit (such as H-bridge circuit). Nearest level control switching modulation scheme is applied to achieve high-quality sinusoidal output voltage. A variable switching frequency space vector modulation control method is proposed in this paper. It is used to achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for two parallel 180° interleaved three-phase grid-connected voltage-source inverters at unity power factor. A wide range of ZVS can be achieved without any additional sensor, auxiliary circuit, or current zero-crossing detection circuit. The carrier wave frequency is easy to be calculated and updated with digital control. The current ripple is precisely predicted and controlled to minimize unnecessary circulation loss. The high current ripple at the inverter side can be considerably canceled by the parallel interleaved configuration. LCL filter is used to further attenuate the current ripple and improve the power quality at the grid side. The switching loss can be significantly reduced especially by using a wide bandgap device with low turn-off loss. The power density is greatly improved owing to the high switching frequency and low component parameters of the filter. SiC mosfets allow a higher frequency, lighter weight inverter over their Si counterparts for electric vehicle (EV) applications. However, using SiC-based EV traction inverters is likely to increase the shaft voltage in an ac motor drive system, which significantly affects the reliability of the system. This paper investigates the impact of high-speed switching of SiC devices and high switching frequency of SiC-based inverter on the common-mode voltage (CMV) and the shaft voltage. It is theoretically illustrated and experimentally demonstrated that the high switching frequency increases the amplitude of the shaft voltage, while the fast switching speed has limited influence on both CMV and the shaft voltage. Afterward, active zero state pulsewidth modulation (AZSPWM) and common-mode chokes are employed to mitigate the shaft voltage. The experimental results show that either the AZSPWM modulation scheme or common-mode chokes have the capability to minimize the shaft voltage. Better performance can be achieved by utilizing both techniques simultaneously. This paper introduces a new configuration of bidirectional multilevel converter in electric vehicle (EV) applications. It has multilevel dc–dc converter with a dc link capacitor voltage balance feature. The multilevel dc–dc converter operates in a bidirectional manner, which is a fundamental requirement in EVs. Compared to the conventional configurations, the proposed one only implements two extra power switches and a capacitor to balance the voltage of the T-type multilevel inverter (MLI) capacitor over a complete drive cycle or at fault conditions. Therefore, no extra isolated sensor, control loops, and/or special switching pattern are required. Moreover, the proposed configuration due to the high-frequency cycle-by-cycle voltage balance between ${C_N}$ and ${C_P}$ , the bulky electrolytic capacitors used in T-type MLI, are replaced with more reliable longer life film capacitors. This will result in a size and weight reduction of the converter by 20%. This allows more real estate for the EV battery in the chassis’ space envelope to increase its capacity. Due to the pulsating power at the inverter output terminals, the passive storage elements of the boost stage of the current-fed switched inverter (CFSI) contain a power frequency harmonic component (100 Hz), apart from dc and switching frequency components. In prior designs, the second harmonic component is suppressed by increasing the size of the input filter inductor and capacitor or by using additional circuits. This paper presents a complete characterization of a control-based approach to suppress the power frequency harmonic component in the input inductor current of a CFSI. It also presents a comprehensive characterization of the harmonic power redistribution. Using the proposed approach, it is demonstrated that the inductor value of a CFSI is reduced by 61% for the same peak-to-peak ripple. This leads to an improvement in the conversion ratio, efficiency, and power density of the overall converter. This paper presents a high-efficiency inverter with the aid of the soft-switching technology, which is accomplished by the resonance of the in-series inductance with the snubber capacitance. The equivalent circuit of the quarter-phase ultrasonic motor is initially deduced, based on which the topology along with the operations of the novel inverter is subsequently presented. The configuration of the new quarter-phase inverter shows its uniqueness in terms of the shared arms and the especially designed snubber capacitance in comparison with the existing inverters. The circuit analysis infers that the dead time of the inverter is the key factor to arrive at the zero-voltage-switching or the zero-current-switching operations. Experimental measurements have demonstrated that the efficiency of the whole drive increases by a factor of 1.25 after replacing the traditional inverter with the proposed one. It should also be noted that the proposed inverter in association with the design method of the dead time not only can work for the quarter-phase ultrasonic motor, but also can be applicable for other kinds of quarter-phase devices. The leakage current originated from the fluctuations of the common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue in a transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic system. In this paper, a modified space vector modulation based on the Fourier transform analysis is proposed to reduce the leakage current in a three-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The CMV harmonic content in a qZSI contains low- and high-frequency harmonics that cause safety and electromagnetic interference problems, respectively. By implementing the proposed modulation in a three-phase qZSI, the low-frequency harmonics of the CMV are mainly reduced. The distribution of the high-frequency harmonics is also modified in a way they can be simply filtered. Passive filtering in a qZSI using other modulation techniques is less effective than using this method. Applying the proposed modulation in the presence of a high-frequency inductive-capacitive filter results in the strong suppression of both high- and low-frequency harmonics (more than 90% in the investigated case). The new IEEE 1547-2018 standard includes dynamic Volt/VAr control for photovoltaic (PV) smart inverters. While recent research has addressed the problem of optimal inverter dispatch, the interaction between inverters and the classical Volt/VAr control (VVC) regulation system needs further study. This paper proposes an approach that builds on the classical VVC solution with PVs, by computing for each inverter a rule that modulates the smart inverter reactive power in function of its real power. Two approaches are presented for computing the inverter's reactive power equation slope: the first approach is based on the robust minimization of the absolute voltage magnitude deviation via a linear program, whereas the second approach yields closed-form solutions inspired from distributionally robust chance constraints. Numerical results are presented on weakly meshed distribution networks having up to 3146 nodes; they demonstrate that the voltage violations due to intermittent real power variations are significantly reduced by the decision rules as compared to maintaining the last computed VVC set-points, even when the inverters operate at constant power factor or with default Volt/VAr settings proposed in the literature; additionally, the reactive power decision rules maintain a network loss level that is close to the average from a centralized solution. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. In this paper, a new zero-sequence current suppression control strategy for the five-phase open-winding fault-tolerant fractional-slot concentrated-winding interior-permanent-magnet (FTFSCW-IPM) motor drive system with a common dc bus is proposed. By unequal distribution of the zero voltage vector, the proposed method can well suppress the zero-sequence current caused by the dead-time effect that the conventional eliminating method cannot be achieved. First, the dead-time effect to the zero-sequence current is discussed. Then the zero-axis controller is designed to obtain the reference common-mode voltage. This paper explores a power-conversion system for single-phase transformerless ac module application. A nonisolated high-gain dc–dc stage is coupled with a doubly grounded dynamic dc-link inverter to implement the microinverter topology. The front-end boost stage steps up the single-module voltage to a higher dc voltage, typically to 200 or 400 V as required for the following inverter stage. It is a hybrid of an interleaved boost and switched capacitor concept capable of achieving high gain while simultaneously maintaining reduced voltage and current stress, and thus lowering switching and conduction loss for most of the switches. By directly connecting the grid neutral to the photovoltaic (PV) negative, the doubly grounded voltage swing inverter has the advantage of zero capacitive-coupled common-mode ground currents, critical for transformerless PV inverters. The two dc links of the inverter stage share the double-line frequency power decoupling with a combination of higher value of mean voltage and relatively large 120-Hz ripple component–the dynamic dc-link approach. Through an optimization algorithm, the decoupling capacitance is minimized enabling an all-film capacitor implementation while satisfying the converter's operating constraints over a wide range of power factors. The development of a photovoltaic ac module composed of a high static gain nonisolated dc–dc converter with current source output characteristic followed by an unfolding low-frequency inverter is presented in this paper. The operation of the dc–dc converter with high static gain and with reduced switch voltage is obtained using the Cuk converter integrated with the switched-inductor technique. The nonisolated structure allows the elimination of the volume and losses of the power transformer and leakage inductance, and an output filter configuration is proposed to reduce the high-frequency ground leakage current. The grid-tied inverter operating in a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) allows a sinusoidal output current with low harmonic distortion (THD = 3.72%) to be obtained without current control loop and without the use of a current sensor at the output. The maximum power point tracking operation is obtained without the use of the current sensor. The DCM operation increases the current stress, but the proposed converter presents two switches and two input inductors sharing the input current in these components. This paper presents a five-phase dual random space vector pulsewidth modulation (FPDR-SVPWM) strategy with an optimized probability density function (PDF) for a five-phase voltage-source inverter, and its performance and evaluation are also analyzed. Based on the nearest four vectors modulation method, the FPDR-SVPWM strategy, combined with random switching frequency and random zero vector, is investigated to significantly reduce the amplitude of high-order harmonics near the switching frequency and its integer multiples. For the nonsinusoidal power supply, third harmonic injection is introduced in this modulation strategy as well. Considering the effect of random numbers on the performance, an optimized Beta distribution is studied in detail. In order to analyze harmonic dispersion degree qualitatively and quantitatively, the power spectral density and the harmonic spread factor are both employed to assess the performance of the FPDR-SVPWM strategy. To reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) and eliminate the CMV spikes for two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSIs), an improved model predictive control (MPC) based CMV reduction method is proposed in this paper considering dead-time effects. First, an improved voltage vector (VV) preselection strategy is proposed to reduce the CMV spikes caused by the dead time. Second, a new hybrid VV preselection strategy based on a delay compensation strategy and a modified current sector division strategy is proposed to completely eliminate the CMV spikes. In this paper, a fixed switching frequency model predictive current controller is designed and implemented on a sensorless five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter interfacing the utility. The predictive control methodology is based on a voltage vector generation technique for the cost function optimization by nullifying its derivative. The aim of the controller is to allow a fixed-frequency operation with no iterations while operating as a utility line current regulator. A pulsewidth modulator based on employing PUC5 redundant switching states fixes the PUC5 auxiliary dc bus capacitor voltage to its desired level with no necessity of a regulator; the overall technique reduces system complexity with less sensors and no loops in the predictive algorithm making it suitable for industrial applications. To solve the problem of poor robustness due to the high dependence of model predictive control (MPC) on the three-phase inverter model, the influence mechanism of the mismatch of circuit parameters R and L, the model discretization error, and sampling errors on MPC prediction error are analyzed in this paper. A feedback self-correction is proposed, which the next current errors are predicted and used to modify the model, based on the previous prediction errors. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. Wireless power transfer with a self-tuning LCC inverter using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controlled switched capacitor is proposed in this paper in order to compensate for the variations of Tx inductance. Usually, receivers contain magnetic and conductive materials for shielding and mechanical support. The inductance of the Tx coil is sensitive to the variation of Tx–Rx alignment because the interaction between the Tx coil and the Rx magnetic–conductive materials is also varied. It is shown that the detuning of the Tx inductance value exacerbates the losses in the LCC inverter. In the proposed method, the PWM duty ratio of a single capacitor adjusts the effective output impedance of the LCC inverter. The PWM feedback loop is designed such that the power factor and the real-part impedance of the LCC inverter are maximized. The PWM switch is turned on at zero voltage and turned off with low dv/dt, minimizing switching losses. Such a soft-switching tunable capacitor can handle higher power compared to the traditional hard-switching capacitor, p-n junction capacitor, or an analog IC capacitor. Another advantage of the proposed technique is the continuity in achievable capacitance value using only one capacitor. The feedback can be fully implemented by analog components, obviating the necessity of digital samplings, ADC/DACs, and microcontrollers.
