Declines of pollinators and high mortality rates of honey bee colonies are a major concern, both in the USA and globally. Long-term data on summer, winter, and annual colony losses improve our understanding of forces shaping the viability of the pollination industry. Since the mass die-offs of colonies in the USA during the winter of 2006–2007, generally termed “Colony Collapse Disorder” (CCD), annual colony loss surveys have been conducted. These surveys gage colony losses among beekeepers of all operation sizes, recruited to participate via regional beekeeping organizations, phone calls, and postal mail. In the last three years, these surveys include summer and annual losses in addition to winter losses. Winter losses in this most recent survey include 5,937 valid participants (5,690 backyard, 169 sideline, and 78 commercial beekeepers), collectively managing 414,267 colonies on 1 October 2014 and constituting 15.1% of the estimated 2.74 million managed colonies in the USA. Annual losses are typically higher than either winter or summer losses, as they calculate losses over the entire year. Total reported losses were 25.3% [95% CI 24.7–25.9%] over the summer, 22.3% [95% CI 21.9–22.8%] over the winter, and 40.6% [95% CI 40.0–41.2%] for the entire 2014–2015 beekeeping year. Average losses were 14.7% [95% CI 14.0–15.3%] over the summer, 43.7% [95% CI 42.8–44.6%] over the winter, and 49.0% [95% CI 48.1–50.0%] over the entire year. While total winter losses were lower in 2014–2015 than in previous years, summer losses remained high, resulting in total annual colony losses of more than 40% during the survey period. This was the first year that total losses were higher in the summer than in the winter, explained in large part by commercial beekeepers reporting losses of 26.2% of their managed colonies during summer, compared to 20.5% during winter. Self-identified causes of overwintering mortality differed by operation size, with smaller backyard beekeepers generally indicating colony management issues (e.g., starvation, weak colony in the fall), in contrast to commercial beekeepers who typically emphasize parasites or factors outside their control (e.g., varroa, nosema, queen failure). More than two-thirds of all beekeepers (67.3%) had higher colony losses than they deemed acceptable.

The landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision outlawed public school segregation and was the catalyst for the nonviolent civil rights movement and some positive change for African Americans. However, in 1967, race riots broke out in largely African American urban districts across America, leading President Lyndon Johnson to form the Kerner Commission to determine the underlying causes of the riots. This paper explores the causes of the riots and the government’s response to them after the Kerner Commission’s findings, and then uses critical race theory as a theoretical framework to determine why institutional racism continues to be pervasive in society. The author focuses on three main areas: school desegregation; mass incarceration and police brutality; and sports, race, and activism to discuss the lack of progress between the Kerner Commission report and today.

Recent high-profile killings of unarmed Black males underscore a stark reality in America: though Black men have the same constitutional rights as all other citizens of the United States, in practice their rights are often violated. The negative stereotype that all Black males are criminals has created an environment that perpetuates the killing of unarmed Black males by police officers as justifiable self-defense. In this article, critical race theory (CRT) provides a theoretical lens to examine and understand the persistent racism underlying the social inequities that have been thrust upon Black males in the United States of America. The authors conclude with implications and recommendations for social work education.

Managed honey bee colony losses are of concern in the USA and globally. This survey, which documents the rate of colony loss in the USA during the 2015–2016 season, is the tenth report of winter losses, and the fifth of summer and annual losses. Our results summarize the responses of 5725 valid survey respondents, who collectively managed 427,652 colonies on 1 October 2015, an estimated 16.1% of all managed colonies in the USA. Responding beekeepers reported a total annual colony loss of 40.5% [95% CI 39.8–41.1%] between 1 April 2015 and 1 April 2016. Total winter colony loss was 26.9% [95% CI 26.4–27.4%] while total summer colony loss was 23.6% [95% CI 23.0–24.1%], making this the third consecutive year when summer losses have approximated to winter losses. Across all operation types, 32.3% of responding beekeepers reported no winter losses. Whilst the loss rate in the winter of 2015–2016 was amongst the lowest winter losses recorded over the ten years this survey has been conducted, 59.0% (n = 3378) of responding beekeepers had higher losses than they deemed acceptable.

There is limited evidence on the acceptability, feasibility and cost-effectiveness of task-sharing interventions to narrow the treatment gap for mental disorders in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this article is to describe the rationale, aims and methods of the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health (AFFIRM) collaborative research hub. AFFIRM is investigating strategies for narrowing the treatment gap for mental disorders in sub-Saharan Africa in four areas. First, it is assessing the feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of task-sharing interventions by conducting randomised controlled trials in Ethiopia and South Africa. The AFFIRM Task-sharing for the Care of Severe mental disorders (TaSCS) trial in Ethiopia aims to determine the acceptability, affordability, effectiveness and sustainability of mental health care for people with severe mental disorder delivered by trained and supervised non-specialist, primary health care workers compared with an existing psychiatric nurse-led service. The AFFIRM trial in South Africa aims to determine the cost-effectiveness of a task-sharing counselling intervention for maternal depression, delivered by non-specialist community health workers, and to examine factors influencing the implementation of the intervention and future scale up. Second, AFFIRM is building individual and institutional capacity for intervention research in sub-Saharan Africa by providing fellowship and mentorship programmes for candidates in Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Each year five Fellowships are awarded (one to each country) to attend the MPhil in Public Mental Health, a joint postgraduate programme at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. AFFIRM also offers short courses in intervention research, and supports PhD students attached to the trials in Ethiopia and South Africa. Third, AFFIRM is collaborating with other regional National Institute of Mental Health funded hubs in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, by designing and executing shared research projects related to task-sharing and narrowing the treatment gap. Finally, it is establishing a network of collaboration between researchers, non-governmental organisations and government agencies that facilitates the translation of research knowledge into policy and practice. This article describes the developmental process of this multi-site approach, and provides a narrative of challenges and opportunities that have arisen during the early phases. Crucial to the long-term sustainability of this work is the nurturing and sustaining of partnerships between African mental health researchers, policy makers, practitioners and international collaborators.

SummaryFor the past six years in which overwintering mortality of honey bee colonies has been surveyed in the USA, estimates of colony loss have fluctuated around one-third of the national population. Here we report on the losses for the 2012–2013 seasons. We collected data from 6,482 US beekeepers (6,114 backyard, 233 sideline, and 135 commercial beekeepers) to document overwintering mortality rates of honey bee colonies for the USA. Responding beekeepers reported a total 30.6% (95% CI: 30.16–31.13%) loss of US colonies over the winter, with each beekeeper losing on average 44.8% (95% CI: 43.88–45.66%) of their colonies. Total winter losses varied across states (range: 11.0% to 54.7%). The self-reported level of acceptable winter loss was 14.6%, and 73.2% of the respondents had mortality rates greater than this level. The leading self-identified causes of overwintering mortality were different according to the operation type; backyard beekeepers generally self-identified “manageable” factors (e.g., starvation, weak colony in the fall), while commercial beekeepers generally identified non-manageable factors (e.g., queen failure, pesticides) as the main cause of losses. For the first time in this series of surveys, we estimated mortality during the summer (total loss = 25.3% (95% CI: 24.80–25.74%), average loss = 12.5% (95% CI: 11.92–13.06%)). The entire 12-months period between April 2012 and April 2013 yielded a total loss of 45.2% (95% CI: 44.58–45.75%), and an average loss of 49.4% (95% CI: 48.46–50.43%). While we found that commercial beekeepers lost fewer colonies than backyard beekeepers in the winter (30.2% (95% CI: 26.54–33.93% vs 45.4% (44.46–46.32%) respectively), the situation was reversed in the summer where commercial beekeepers reported higher average losses than backyard beekeepers (21.6% (95% CI: 18.4–24.79%) vs 12.1% (11.46–12.65%)). These findings demonstrate the ongoing difficulties of US beekeepers in maintaining overall colony heath and survival.

Various instruments and contract services can be used to calculate degree-days. This study compared instruments and services to the Wescor Biophenometer, an instrument used by cooperators of the Southeast Pennsylvania IPM Research Group (SE PA IPM RG) throughout Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania for 10 years. Instruments evaluated in the study were the Wescor Biophenometer Datalogger, Avatel HarvestGuard, Avatel Datascribe Junior, Davis Weather Monitor II, Accu-Trax, and the HOBO H8 Pro Temperature Data Logger. The services were SkyBit and national weather data. Different combinations of instruments and services were used at three locations in Pennsylvania and four locations in Delaware over a 2-year period. We checked the degree-day accumulation of each instrument and service weekly and made statistical comparisons among the instruments and services at each site. To further construct a comparison of the instruments, we noted distinctive qualities of each instrument, interviewed the manufacturers, and received feedback from SE PA IPM RG members who used the instruments. We evaluated the instruments' algorithms, durability, cost, temperature sampling interval, ease of use, time input required by the user, and other distinctive factors. Statistically, there were no significant differences in degree-day accumulations between the Biophenometer, HarvestGuard, Datascribe, Weather Monitor II, Skybit, or weather service data. However, cost and time required to access/interpret data and personal preference should be major considerations in choosing an instrument or service to measure degree-days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between plasma protein binding and the pharmacokinetic disposition of saquinavir during a normal and elevated alpha-1-acid glycoprotein condition. The extent of plasma binding of [14C]saquinavir to human plasma, human albumin, and human alpha-1-acid glycoprotein was also assessed. Transgenic mice, which overexpress plasma alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, and control mice were given a single intravenous injection of saquinavir (10 mg/kg) and plasma samples were harvested as a function of time. The extent of [14C]saquinavir (0.5-30 microg/ml) plasma protein binding in each group of mice was determined by ultrafiltration. Plasma saquinavir concentrations from in vivo administration were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Saquinavir binding in human plasma and control mouse plasma was similar (approximately 3% unbound). In contrast, the extent of binding was significantly increased in transgenic mice (1.5% unbound). Furthermore, saquinavir was more extensively bound to alpha-1-acid glycoprotein than to albumin (2.1 versus 11.5% unbound). The systemic clearance and volume of distribution of saquinavir were significantly reduced in transgenic mice compared with control mice. The results of this study show that alpha-1-acid glycoprotein is the predominant plasma protein to which saquinavir binds. In addition, elevations in plasma alpha-1-acid glycoprotein considerably alter the pharmacokinetic disposition of saquinavir. This is consistent with the observations that systemic exposure to saquinavir in human immunodeficiency virus patients is greater than that in healthy volunteers and that alpha-1-acid glycoprotein levels increase with the degree of HIV infection.

Face-to-face assessment of research outcomes is expensive and may introduce bias. Postal questionnaires offer a cheaper alternative which avoids observer bias, but non-response and incomplete response reduce the effective sample size and may be equally serious sources of bias. This study examines the extent and potential effects of missing data in the postal collection of outcomes for a large rehabilitation trial.

Aims To evaluate the effectiveness of home visiting programmes on parenting and quality of the home environment. Design Systematic review of the literature of randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies evaluating home visiting programmes involving at least one postnatal visit. Subjects Thirty four studies reported relevant outcomes; 26 used participants considered to be at risk of adverse maternal or child health outcomes; two used preterm or low birth weight infants; and two used infants with failure to thrive. Only eight used participants not considered to be at risk of adverse child health outcomes. Results Seventeen studies reported Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) scores, 27 reported other measures of parenting, and 10 reported both types of outcome. Twelve studies were entered into the meta analysis. This showed a significant effect of home visiting on HOME score. Similar results were found after restricting the analyses to randomised controlled trials and to higher quality studies. Twenty one of the 27 studies reporting other measures of parenting found significant treatment effects favouring the home visited group on a range of measures. Conclusions Home visiting programmes were associated with an improvement in the quality of the home environment. Few studies used UK health visitors, so caution must be exercised in extrapolating the results to current UK health visiting practice. Further work is needed to evaluate whether UK health visitors can achieve similar results. Comparisons with similar programmes delivered by paraprofessionals or community mothers are also needed.

Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of home visiting programmes on the uptake of childhood immunization.
Methods. A systematic review was carried out of the literature of controlled studies evaluating home visiting programmes involving at least one post-natal visit, which included tasks within the remit of British health visiting and reporting outcomes relevant to British health visiting. Eleven studies were considered, nine of which used socio-economically disadvantaged families. The outcome measure was uptake of a range of childhood immunizations.
Results. Eleven studies reported uptake of immunization. Effect sizes from nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. Fixed effects models demonstrated a significant effect of home visiting for all studies and also for several subgroups of studies, but with significant heterogeneity of effect sizes. A random effects model failed to demonstrate an effect of home visiting.

Imipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant known to be bound in the serum primarily by alpha-1-acid glycoprotein. The present study examined the effect of changes in serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein levels on the pharmacokinetics and antidepressant activity of the drug by utilizing a novel set of transgenic mice in which the steady-state level of alpha-1-acid glycoprotein is significantly elevated over normal. The pharmacokinetic disposition was characterized after i.v. and i.p. injections in transgenic and control mice. In transgenic mice, there were significant decreases in the serum unbound fraction (0.62+/- 0.38 vs.2.48 +/- 0.43%), Vd (9.0 +/- 2.5 vs. 22.4 +/- 3.2 liters/kg), T1/2 (35.0 +/- 7.6 vs. 65.3 +/- 7.6 min) and fraction of dose excreted unchanged in urine (0.14 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.70 +/- 0.20%) with no significant alterations in systemic clearance (204.7 +/- 56.1 vs. 292.8 +/- 58.4 ml/min/kg) compared to control values. The antidepressant activity of imipramine was measured by a swimming-immobility test 30 min after either imipramine (30 mg/kg i.p.) or saline treatment. After saline treatment, there were no significant differences in the duration of swimming despair between transgenic (183 +/- 24 sec) and control (175 +/- 12 sec) mice. Imipramine treatment resulted in reductions in the duration of immobility in both transgenic (130 +/- 21 sec) and control (54 +/- 33 sec) mice. The extent of reduction was significantly less in transgenic animals than in control animals. These alterations in the antidepressant action appeared to correlate with the unbound drug concentration but not with the total drug concentration.

This study was conducted as part of the MRC cognitive function and ageing study. It aimed to estimate the lifetime prevalence of self reported physical illnesses and other health related events, and the prevalence of limiting disability in people over 65 in six areas of England and Wales.

A group of behaviorally treated abstainers, controlled drinkers and relapsers who had been followed up for a minimum of 1 year were compared on eight treatment and 11 posttreatment variables. Discriminating characteristics of abstainers were their goal of abstinence at discharge and length of attendance at aftercare facilities. Controlled drinkers had a goal of controlled drinking and were most likely to have had controlled drinking training during treatment. Relapsers were most likely to have been discharged from treatment prematurely, to receive further treatment and to use psychotropic medication. No controlled drinkers attended Alcoholics Anonymous or received residential care during follow-up in contrast to a small proportion of abstainers and relapsers who did. Some aspects of the drinking behavior of controlled drinkers and relapsers were also studied. Controlled drinkers were more likely to have a period of initial abstinence and for a longer period of time. Of the controlled drinkers, 66% drank at least once per week and 86% set themselves drinking limits; average consumption of alcohol was 48 and 32 g/day by men and women, respectively. The majority of controlled drinkers changed their preferred beverage and their social and physical drinking environment after treatment in accordance with therapeutic advice.

Improvement in dental and/or facial aesthetics does not necessarily lead to an increase in self esteem.

Localization of rhodopsin and its position in the membrane has been the subject of numerous studies. Most recently, immunocytochemical techniques have been employed to localize the opsin component of the molecule in in situ rod outer segments. Due to the problems inherent in localization procedures (penetration and mechanical interference) we have utilized isolated, osmotically intact rod outer segment discs in this study. Specific antibodies to chromatographically pure rhodopsin were prepared and enzymatically digested to their Fab components. The univalent Fab antibodies were conjugated to horseradish peroxidase and used to label the isolated rod outer segment discs. Discs treated with anti-opsin conjugate stained uniformly and heavily on their interdisc surfaces. Reaction product was also present on the intradisc surface in a thinner but still uniformly distributed layer. Controls treated with preimmune Fab - horseradish peroxidase conjugate showed no deposition of reaction product.

In laboratory mice we previously defined a gene, rol (resistance to osmotic lysis), based on its effect on erythrocyte osmotic fragility. Here we report a physiological characterization of rol gene action utilizing congenic strains developed for the purpose; these two strains have a common genetic background and differ only by the two alleles of rol, susceptible (rols) or resistant (rolr). In comparison to rols/s erythrocytes, rolr/r cells have a reduced mean cell volume, a higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and hemolytic volume, and respond differently to swelling induced by ion influx. Rolr/r erythrocytes also have reduced cell water and K, which are associated with a threefold higher activity of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter (measured as ouabain-resistant, bumetanide-sensitive 86Rb influx) and 30% higher Na pump activity. Apart from differences in ion transport and water content, the content of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) in rolr/r cells is 15% lower than in rols/s ones. Analyses of membrane structural components revealed no rol-associated differences in their phospholipid or fatty acid content, nor were strain differences evident among the membrane and cytoskeletal proteins and their posttranslational modifications (phosphorylation and fatty acylation). Rol is not the structural gene for either the alpha- or the beta-chain of hemoglobin and has no effect on erythrocyte production or destruction. The concerted effect of rol variation on erythrocyte volume, water and cation content, cation cotransport, and 2,3-DPG levels is similar in many ways to the variation observed among individual humans for the same characteristics.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Fifty successful controlled drinkers, 45 abstainers and 44 relapsers who had been followed up intensively for a minimum of 1 year were compared on 32 pretreatment variables in an attempt to isolate those which would be predictors of outcome type. Treatment was behaviorally oriented, and all subjects except for those with liver damage were left to make their own choice of treatment goal. The results showed that the best predictors of abstinence were: previous contact with Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.); medium period of previous abstinence; having been initiated to seek help by a specialist; having been a periodic drinker, and drinking exclusively alone or socially. Controlled drinkers were more likely to be continuous drinkers, were not likely to have attended A.A. or to have abstained for a significant period of time, were likely to have relatives with a drinking problem, to have been motivated to seek help by a friend or a relative and to be less discriminating about the social drinking environment. Relapsers were more likely to be unemployed, to have a history of A.A. attendance and to have had a short period of previous abstinence. They were most likely to have liver damage and therefore advised to abstain. The results were interpreted as suggesting that outcome is likely to be influenced by the subjects' cognitions, by past behavioral expectations and experience of abstinence, as well as having the freedom of a choice of goals for recovery.

The diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure amido complex (SR)-(η⁵-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(&Numl;HCH(CH3)Ph) ((SR)-5) converts to (RR)-5 (inversion at rhenium, retention at carbon) in THF-d8 at 49.4 °C with k1 = 2.34 × 10^-4 s^-1 and k-1 = 0.90 × 10^-4 s^-1. Similarly, (SS)-5 converts to (RS)-5 with k1 = 0.90 × 10^-4 s^-1 and k-1 = 2.30 × 10^-4 s^-1. Both epimerizations give equilibrium ratios (RR/SR or SS/RS) of 70:30. Reactions with HOTf yield [(η⁵-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(NH2CH(CH3)Ph)]⁺TfO^-, and subsequent additions of Et4N⁺CN^- afford (η⁵-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CN) and NH2CH(CH3)Ph (all steps with retention at rhenium and carbon). Enantiomeric purities and absolute configurations are assayed by chiral NMR shift reagents and (−)-menthyl chloroformate derivatives, respectively, establishing configurations of epimerized 5. Reaction of (SR)-5 and P(p-tol)3 in THF-d8 at 49.4 °C gives (η⁵-C5H5)Re(NO)(P(p-tol)3)(&Numl;HCH(CH3)Ph) (50:50 (t0) → 66:34 (t∞) RR/SR) with k = 4.6 × 10^-4 s^-1, twice that for the conversion of (SR)-5 to (RR)-5. Rate data for the latter at 32.3−59.1 °C give ΔH^&thermod; = 26 kcal/mol and ΔS^&thermod; = 6 eu. These results are best modeled by mechanisms involving initial and rate determining PPh3 dissociation, with anchimeric assistance by the amido lone pair, to give an intermediate that is trigonal planar at rhenium and combines with PAr3 without significant diastereoselectivity. Reactions of n-BuLi with 5 and related complexes give &Numl;LiR species from which PPh3 is lost at lower temperatures, and are presumed to be much less configurationally stable.

Among normal mouse strains, natural genetic variation offers the potential to investigate the structure and function of cell membranes. One such polymorphism between C57BL/6J and DBA/2J is a difference in erythrocyte sensitivity to osmotic lysis. The genetic basis for erythrocyte osmotic fragility differences between mouse strains C57BL/6 and DBA/2 was examined through analyses of their serial backcross progeny, recombinant inbred (ri) strains (BXD), and congenic C57BL/6 strains with allelic differences at Hbb or Fv-2. The data indicate that the fragility difference between C57BL/6 and DBA/2 is the result of allelic differences at a minimum of two segregating loci. One of these might be linked to, but is not identical with the gene encoding the beta chain of hemoglobin (Hbb). Allelic differences at Fv-2, a gene known to control the proportion of erythroid precursors in the S phase, and at Hba, the structural locus of hemoglobin alpha chain also appear to exert no major influence on red cell osmotic fragility. Furthermore, the fact that red cells from one of the RI strans (BXD-31) are strikingly more resistant than those from the resistant parental strain DBA/2 leads to the conclusion that the degree of resistance/susceptibility for either strain is determined by the combined contributions of gene effects not all of which act in the same direction. We also found that red cells from strans C57BL/6 and DBA/2 differ in their uptake of 51Cr. This result suggests the possibility that red cell osmotic fragility differences may be due in part to differences in ion metabolism or membrane transport.

By the techniques of immunodiffusion and fluorescent immunohistochemistry we show that antibodies to both the native and the SDS-denatured forms of the proteins, paramyosin and myosin, react with the native, SDS-denatured and glutaraldehyde-fixed forms of their respective antigens. Anti-denatured myosin also binds to both native and denatured forms of the proteolytic subfragments of myosin: globular subfragment-1 and alpha-helical LMM. Anti-native myosin, on the other hand, while able to bind to both native and denatured LMM or rod and to native and glutaraldehyde-fixed S-1, does not bind to SDS-denatured S-1.

Summary The paper reviews the main studies using the AGECAT computerised diagnostic system for the diagnosis of dementia in community studies of prevalence and incidence. It is suggested that variations in reported rates may be due to the use of unstandardised methods, and the paper reviews the oldest established standardised interview: the Geriatric Mental State. The AGECAT system is outlined, and the studies of its diagnostic validity indicated. Arguments are presented against the inclusion of cognitive tests in such instruments, and for the critical evaluation of the concepts of mild dementia. The use of AGECAT in the US/UK Diagnostic Project, and in the Liverpool study of Continuing Health in the Community is described. In addition, preliminary information is given on the Liverpool ALPHA study, the MRC UK multi-centre study, studies organised by the Pan American Health Organisation (Argentina, Chile, Cuba), the Eurodem concerted action (based in Rotterdam) and the WHO multi-site studies. Individual studies in Spain and Portugal are also discussed.

Studies on the genetic regulation of growth are confounded by the multigenic basis of growth. There is a need to isolate simplified genetic systems for the study of growth. We compared two closely related mouse strains and their F1 hybrids with regard to birth and weaning weights. The strains we used were C57BL/6 (B6) and a congenic derivative of B6 (HW54) that contains a short segment of BALB/c chromosome 7 spanning the H-24 and Gpi-1 loci. Despite the genetic similarity of these strains, they differed significantly in both birth and weaning weights. At birth, B6 pups were on average as much as 6.6% heavier than were pups from HW54. By the time of weaning, this trend was reversed; HW54 pups were as much as 13.8% heavier than were B6 pups. (B6 x HW54)F1 hybrids were intermediate between the parental strains in birth weight but were identical to B6 animals at weaning. An analysis of the F2 generation suggested that postnatal growth differences between B6 and HW54 are probably dependent on the maternal genotype. These strain-specific growth rates result from polymorphism at a restricted portion of the genome and represent a highly simplified system for the study of the genetics of growth.

The limitations of establishing neuropsychological diagnosis through psychological testing and psychiatric examination by clinicians are discussed, along with the need to define cases of illness in a standardized way for research. The GMS-HAS-AGECAT package is a standardized assessment of mental state and historical information about onset of illness, from which data are used in a computer-assisted method to derive clinically based diagnoses of the principal types of dementia, depression and other mental illness. Recording is made of co-morbid states and levels of diagnostic confidence. Agreement between psychiatrists on AECAT diagnoses ranges from kappa values of 0.76 to 0.88, and validity has now been tested further by outcome studies. A short description is given of the Medical Research Council, EURODEM, World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization studies now using this method.
