The broad learning system (BLS) based on the random vector functional link neural network is a new versatile non-iterative neural network for rapidly selecting models. One of its fascinating features is the broad expansion, a dynamic adjustment strategy in the changing environment. However, the added enhancement nodes often suffer from information redundancy and loss, a failure in the broad expansion. Therefore, the factorization of enhancement nodes, which makes each code independent of others and achieves minimal redundancy and loss representation, is critical to successful broad expansion. Inspired by this idea, in this study, a factorial broad expansion (FBE) strategy is proposed to aid BLS (FBE-BLS) during broad expansion. The strategy is proposed as a component for reducing the information redundancy and loss in the classical BLS. This strategy is an adversarial framework to learn the factorial codes at the enhancement layer. The factorial and predictor networks adversarially learn factorial codes by chasing independence, minimizing predictability among enhancement nodes. In experiments, considering that few works focused on information redundancy and loss in the broad expansion of BLS, the FBE-BLS is compared with the classical BLS, and state-of-the-art methods are selected. Purpose: Smart homes are recent Internet of Things applications that aim to improve residents' quality of life. Despite its potential, the adoption of smart homes, in general, and its devices and appliances, in specific, is not reaching a mass market yet. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence residents' intention to buy smart homes devices in Jordan. Design/methodology/approach: This paper proposes a novel model to study users' intention to buy smart homes devices by following a quantitative method. Responses were collected and statistically analyzed from 375 households using structural equation modeling. Findings: Results show that user awareness, perceived cost, perceived enjoyment, personalization, user trust and social influences significantly influence the intention to buy smart home devices. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first study attempts to predict intention to buy smart home devices in Jordan. The R package planor enables the user to search for, and construct, factorial designs satisfying given conditions. The user specifies the factors and their numbers of levels, the factorial terms which are assumed to be non-zero, and the subset of those which are to be estimated. Both block and treatment factors can be allowed for, and they may have either fixed or random effects, as well as hierarchy relationships. The designs are generalised regular designs, which means that each one is constructed by using a design key and that the underlying theory is that of finite abelian groups. The main theoretical results and algorithms on which planor is based are developed and illustrated, with the emphasis on mathematical rather than programming details. Sections 3–5 are dedicated to the elementary case, when the numbers of levels of all factors are powers of the same prime. The ineligible factorial terms associated with users’ specifications are defined and it is shown how they can be used to search for a design key by a backtrack algorithm. Then the results are extended to the case when different primes are involved, by making use of the Sylow decomposition of finite abelian groups.
