Researchers from Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in China have conducted a study on the V-myb myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) family and its role in plant development and abiotic stress responses. They discovered a novel 1R SHAQKYF-class MYB, called MaMYBR30, in mulberry. The researchers found that MaMYBR30 is located in the nucleus and belongs to a CCA-like subgroup with a conserved SHAQKYF motif. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the best combination of rootstock and training system for ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, in Jundiaí, state of São Paulo, Brazil. To assess the data, a randomized block design in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme was used, that is, two rootstocks (‘IAC 766 Campinas’ and ‘106-8 Mgt’) and two training systems (low and high espaliers), with four replications. The characteristics assessed were production, physicochemical analysis and concentration of bioactive compounds. With regard to the physicochemical composition of the grape must, the results indicated that the tested combinations are within the standard requirements for the winemaking industry; outcomes may change according to the rootstock used, i.e., an increase in production or an increase in the nutritional quality of the fruits. Nevertheless, ‘106-8 Mgt’ rootstock showed great yield in both training systems, that is, an increase of up to 80%. Finally, ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ must be grafted on to ‘IAC 766 Campinas’ rootstock through a low espalier system to achieve a high content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, and high antioxidant activity. Chardonnay cultivar has shown great potential of planting and development in sites above 900 m of Brazilian southeast for sparkling wines production. The quality of this product is related to vineyard climate and management, since both affect the vine development and grape composition. In this study, three defoliation orientations (east, west and east/west face), at veraison, and a group without defoliation, were compared in order to observe the impacts of this management on the productivity, grape and base wine quality. Yield, grape components, must and base wine composition were analyzed for two years. East/west defoliation increased alcohol content and decreased acidity in base wines, while the group without defoliation increased acidity, according to the higher and lower sun exposure, respectively. Defoliation at veraison increased the incidence of bunch rots. Differences in the aromatic composition of the base wines between the harvests were identified. The east/west defoliation treatment presented more intense fruity, citrus and tropical aromas. For regions characterized by subtropical highland climate (Cwb) in the Brazilian Southeast, late defoliation is not recommended since defoliated plants were more susceptible to fungus infection at flowering and berry formation. How do plants and animals translate their genes into the graceful curves of leaf and limb? Even though we have sequenced the entire genomes of several plants and animals, we don't understand how these linear strings of information produce the complex three-dimensional living forms we see around us. Central to the question of how genes control shape is how they influence the way tissues curve and bend as they grow. We know that genes are somehow involved because mutations in genes can change the shape of a structure like a leaf. Leaves need to stop growing after they have reached a certain size, and in many plants, this arrest does not happen simultaneously throughout the leaf, but occurs progressively. Even though some of life's growth processes may be simpler than they seem at first, we are still very far from being able to predict an organism's shape from the sequence of letters in its DNA. Enormous gaps remain in our knowledge of how genes influence properties of cells, and how cells signal and interact with each other within growing frameworks.
