The article presents a profile of U.S. Navy surgeon William Paul Crillon Barton and his attempts to get officials in the U.S. Navy to adopt a policy which would add citrus juices to the daily rations of sailors. It overviews the differences between several written recommendations Barton submitted to the Navy between 1811 and 1814 highlighting the health benefits of citric acid for sailors and explores reasons why this approach to preventing scurvy, which had been adopted in Great Britain in the late 1790s, failed to gain popularity and status in the U.S. as an antiscorbutic.

Dr. Annie Alexander (1864-1929) of Charlotte, North Carolina, was an early general practitioner specializing in the diseases of women and children in the U.S. South. Her life and career were marked by a sense of duty to her community, as an elite southern white woman and physician. The interplay of gender, class, race, and profession can be traced through Alexander's extensive unpublished essays, medical case records, correspondence and personal papers, and the published reactions of her (largely male) contemporaries. The article discusses the case of Dr. Frederick Homer, Jr. of Fauquier County, Virginia who resigned his naval commission at Washington due to alleged insanity. The author states that the naval inquiry sought to determine whether or not Homer had been insane at the time of his resignation. Dr. James H. Clark and family physician, Dr. Robert E. Peyton, provided the principal evidence for insanity. The insanity plea was ruled out by Dr. Henry H. Smith, Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.
