• Human resources development aided the developing space program of the Philippines. • Most of the selected personnel for training came from the academia. • Trainees taken from the industry followed later to support the push for space. • Most of trained personnel opted to stay in the country to support the space program. The Philippines has experienced a shift of interest in space technology development and utilization over the past decade, culminating with the establishment of its national space agency in 2019. In cooperation with different universities in Japan, the Philippines successfully developed and launched two microsatellites, DIWATA-1 and DIWATA-2, and six nanosatellites, MAYA-1 to MAYA-6. By sending personnel to Japan and other space-faring countries, the country was able to rapidly ramp up its satellite development and utilization capabilities. In this paper, we examine and evaluate the complex human resources development efforts conducted by the country to support the creation of a local space ecosystem and ensure its long-term sustainability. Through a careful review, we identify how many people benefited from training programs, studies abroad or other forms of capacity building, and how these skilled individuals were retained in the budding Filipino space sector. Precisely, we looked at the backgrounds of the different people trained by the country, what type of training they received (funding, location, and duration), and how they are supporting the local space ecosystem at the time of writing this paper. How does a country embark on large-scale R&D programs? Among R&D programs, this is an intriguing question for large scale Science and Technology (S&T) projects such as space programs, because of the necessity for large resource commitments, and the difficulty of being accountable to the taxpayers when the outcome is not always known. It can be assumed that engineers, scientists, bureaucrats, and politicians play respective roles. This paper aims to shed light on the specific role of politics, through the examples of policies of and decisions by NAKASONE Yasuhiro. Nakasone was the minister for science and technology (1959–1960, 1972), and later became the prime minister (1982–1987). He played a crucial role in establishing the Science and Technology Agency and the National Space Activities Council in the 1950s, which would be the foundational institutions responsible for space policy for the next half century. As prime minister, he decided to participate in the Space Station program. Within his vision for Japan for the 21st century, he emphasized the need for radical change in economic policy, education, defense and S&T investment. He was one of the few politicians that had vision to promote S&T and recognized the strategic value to the nation. He was able to explain to the nation why Japan should promote the development of a launch vehicle, when the engineers faced development difficulties in doing so. Thus, he was influential both in the policy layer and in promoting specific programs to support his national vision. Politics intersects with S&T projects because of the uncertainty and tradeoffs associated with these efforts. Japan did not address space programs for national security and commercial space for a long time. It is a politician's role to create institutions, to allocate resources and, more importantly, to explain to the taxpayers why policy measures or programs are necessary. R&D investment is a societal activity: it reflects the social, political, and economic situation, as well as being important for diplomacy and international relations. Bearing in mind that it would be misleading to attribute the initiation of largescale S&T projects to the leadership of a single individual, this paper will attempt to show the driving forces behind, and fundamental objective of Japan's space policy, in addition to the historical shift in that policy by examining the influence of this notable politician. • Nakasone played the key role in establishing institutions promoting space development in post-war Japan. • Nakasone made the best use of close relationships with the U.S. in promoting Japan's space activities. • Nakasone made decisions on space policy process, resource allocation with vision, thus integrating the stakeholders. Nowadays, satellite data is an appropriate and undeniable source for studying earthquake precursors due to their diversity, wide coverage, being up to date and low cost. Time series analysis of satellite data plays an important role in the process of detecting seismic anomalies in earthquake warning systems. But in order to reduce uncertainty during the seismic anomalies detection, it is necessary the use a variety of satellite data, although it leads to increase of data size and processing time. This paper aims to explain the role of Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform in considerable progress of seismo-Lithospheric Atmospheric Ionospheric (LAI) anomalies detection in earthquake early warning systems. Among the different studied earthquakes, for example two recent powerful earthquakes in Japan (13 February and 20 March 2021) have been discussed. Deduced time series of three precursors (i.e. Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), Chlorophyll and Ozone) from GEE platform were investigated using Median method and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to detect potentially seismo-LAI anomalies. Our satisfactory results show that with the addition of other various satellite data and also known predictors intelligent algorithms such as deep learning to GEE platform, we will see a significant leap forward in studies of earthquake precursors. • RF conditioning of RFQ of IFMIF/EVEDA accelerator (LIPAc) reached stable CW at 80 % of nominal voltage at the end of 2021. • Conditioning towards nominal voltage at CW was stopped in March 2022 because of vacuum leak from one of the O-Ring of the RF windows, damaged by high temperature. • Several coupled RF and thermal simulations of the couplers of the RFQ were performed with FEM codes. Thermal weak point was identified in the contact between the anchor of the RF window and the cooled inner conductor of the coupler. • A solution to improve cooling of the RF window that could be implemented quickly with minor modifications of the RF windows parts of the couplers was found. • After the testing and validation of the modification in a prototype, the couplers with the modified parts were successfully installed in RFQ and RF conditioning of RFQ resumed in June 2023. Under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement, the Accelerator Facility validation activities aim at demonstrating the acceleration of 125 mA D+ beam up to 9 MeV. This is the main goal of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) under installation and commissioning in Rokkasho, Japan [ 1 , 2 ]. The LIPAc commissioning by accelerating the beam through the entire line is currently on-going at Rokkasho Fusion Institute [ 3,4 ]. Other than the beam commissioning, in 2021 and 2022 extensive conditioning experimental campaigns have been carried out on the Radio Frequency Power System (RFPS)-RFQ system to reach CW [5]. The RFPS-RFQ is composed of 8 RF-RFQ tetrode based chains injecting RF power into the RFQ by 8 couplers. The target of the RFQ conditioning campaigns is to reach CW operation at nominal vane-voltage of 132 kV. RFQ could achieve CW field of 105 kV at the end of 2021 [ 5,8 ]. During the RFQ conditioning campaigns in 2022, the conditioning was stopped because of abnormal increase of vacuum pressure due to a leak from one O-Ring of the couplers. The 8 couplers are equipped with a ceramic window (vacuum barrier) using O-ring for sealing purposes [ 9 ]. Extensive simulation and design studies have been carried out and an upgraded design of the parts near the RF window of RFQ coupler has been proposed and validated for implementation. This paper will focus on the RFQ couplers technical issue, analysis of the design upgrade, implementation of the upgraded solution and perspective for future improvements of the RFQ couplers designs in view of FNS and DONES application. This paper presents comprehensive parametric analyses on the behavior of damage-repaired steel-concrete composite girders using CFRP sheets. Cross-sectional loss was considered on the lower steel flange at midspan to replicate corrosion damage in the girder. Damage was repaired using CFRP sheets to the underside of the lower flange. Non-linear Finite Element (FE) analyses were conducted on the repaired and intact composite girders. The FE models were validated using experimental results and a parametric study was carried out considering the variables such as number of CFRP sheets, CFRP elastic modulus, damage amount, epoxy resin elastic modulus, concrete strength, flange strength, and CFRP bonding area. The effect of parameters on failure components was studied for Limit States 1, 2, and 3 defined in the revised Design Specification for Highway Bridges in Japan (JSHB) (2017). Limit States 1 and 3 correspond to the service limit and ultimate Limit States in AASHTO, respectively. However, Limit State 2 is JSHB unique Limit State located between 1 and 3 in terms of functionality. Regression models were proposed to determine the load-carrying capacity of the repaired composite girder for 3 Limit States. Comparison between the proposed equation and FE-predicted values showed good agreement with prediction errors of ±10% to ±19%. The study showed that to restore the stiffness and load capacities for Limit State 1 high-modulus CFRP sheets and resins are more suitable options than the low-modulus sheets and resins. Because transport in the port hinterlands heavily depends on roads with negative externalities, much social interest has been in modal shifts (MSs) to rail and shipping with lower environmental impact. Currently, leading industry sectors to ambitiously embrace technological innovations to decarbonize—consequently, in line with these changes, the significance of MSs should change; however, no previous studies have comprehensively presented the overall CO 2 emissions and transport mode shares for future regional cargo transport. This paper presents a scenario analysis of CO 2 emission reductions in the Japanese domestic hinterland of international maritime container transport based on future scenarios of technological innovation and change in shipper behavior. The simulation results using the global logistics intermodal network simulation model showed that up to 87% CO 2 reduction is possible, and the primary driver for this is technological innovation. Moreover, the significance of MSs fluctuates depending on the advancement of technological innovation, suggesting that MSs hold a degree of import as a decarbonization measure during the transitional phase toward carbon neutrality (CN) as technological innovation advances. Ongoing climate change has increased the impact of landslides and related slope disasters on infrastructure and human lives. Microwave satellite remote sensing, particularly interferometric analysis of synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data, is a powerful tool for routine monitoring of the displacement of slopes on small wavelength scales, independently from solar illumination and cloud coverage. Although various sophisticated techniques for time-series InSAR have been developed, practical application in conjunction with geological analysis to reveal intrinsic and triggering factors of slope displacement is still limited. In this paper, we describe a practical case of time-series InSAR analysis with a special focus on its geological implications in northwestern Kyushu, a high-risk area for slope-related disasters in Japan. The extracted susceptible polygons from the InSAR results show accuracy comparable with that of other recent research on landslide mapping. Intrinsic factor analysis based on a geographic information system reveals that the displacement occurs on relatively gentle slopes instead of steep areas, corresponding to the transient zone of Paleogene-Neogene sedimentary rocks and basalt. Triggering factor analysis based on correlation coefficients reveals a significant link between some displacement areas with mean and/or maximum precipitation for each observation duration. Those findings confirm the importance of carefully accounting for the geological background for landslide susceptibility assessment and policy making, apart from topographic and meteorological conditions. • The blanket testing facility for WCCB TBM was newly built in Rokkasho Fusion Institute, Japan. • An apparatus for flow accelerated corrosion testing under coolant condition of TBM was installed. • An apparatus for high heat flux testing under cooling with pressurized water using electron beam gun was installed. • An apparatus for ingress testing of pressurized water inside TBM was installed. • An apparatus for evaluating characteristics of beryllium-water reaction was installed. Intensive research and development activities have been conducted for designing a water-cooled ceramic breeder (WCCB) blanket system. In this system 325 °C/15.5 MPa of pressurized water removes heat injected and accumulated in blanket containers made of a reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel, F82H. The container has lithium ceramics and beryllium pebbles as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier, respectively. In order to demonstrate performance of the system, especially for high-temperature pressurized water coolant, experimental apparatus have been installed in Rokkasho Fusion Institute, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, Japan. These apparatuses enable to conduct the following experiment on full-scale mockups: 1) high heat flux (HHF) test to demonstrate heat removal of surface heat flux by electron beam gun simulating plasma, 2) flow assisted corrosion, 3) coolant ingress into dummy pebble beds, and 4) beryllium-water reaction between the coolant and the pebbles. The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is a science mission led by the European Space Agency, being developed for launch in 2023. The Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) is an instrument onboard JUICE, whose main scientific goals are to understand ice tectonics based on topographic data, the subsurface structure by measuring tidal response, and small-scale roughness and albedo of the surface. In addition, from the perspective of astrobiology, it is imperative to study the subsurface ocean scientifically. The development of GALA has proceeded through an international collaboration between Germany (the lead), Japan, Switzerland, and Spain. Within this framework, the Japanese team (GALA-J) is responsible for developing three receiver modules: the Backend Optics (BEO), the Focal Plane Assembly (FPA), and the Analog Electronics Module (AEM). Like the German team, GALA-J also developed software to simulate the performance of the entire GALA system (performance model). In July 2020, the Proto-Flight Models of BEO, FPA, and AEM were delivered from Japan to Germany. Employee engagement has become a critical issue in Japanese companies. One way to develop it is to improve the relationship among employees through gratitude expressions. In the post-COVID-19 remote work environment, digital devices are essential. This paper confirms that expressions of gratitude delivered via digital devices enhance the relationship between employees. We experimented in a small-town government office where participants (n = 88) were asked to (1) use the Thanks App, an app we developed to express gratitude, for two months and (2) respond to an engagement survey we developed before and after the experimental period. Through cross-analysis of the data from the app and questionnaire, we found that the "trust in colleagues" factor had a strong correlation (r = 0.80, p < 0.001) with our new index computed by the app's data. The results suggest that the use of the Thanks App may help visualize the trust relationship among teams. This study has a practical value in providing a new team management tool for visualizing team trust. The Broader Approach (BA) activities aim to complement the ITER project and to promote the early realization of fusion energy through research, development, and tests of technologies supporting the future demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO). These activities are implemented under the BA agreement, which was signed and ratified in 2007 between Euratom and the Government of Japan. In essence, the BA activities consist of three projects: a) The Satellite Tokamak Programme Project JT-60SA, the world's largest superconducting tokamak until ITER starts, aims to support the assembly, commissioning and preliminary operation of ITER, and carry out demonstration and optimisation of steady-state operation of advanced plasma configurations for DEMO; b) The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC), which comprises three different sub-projects: the DEMO Design Research and Development Coordination Centre to coordinate design and R&D on materials and components for DEMO, the Fusion Computer Simulation Centre for the simulations of fusion plasmas, the analysis of experimental data, modelling of ITER operation, and contribution to the design of DEMO, and the Remote Experimentation Centre to allow scientists to participate remotely in fusion experiments from its control room in Japan; c) The Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF/EVEDA) focused on the design and validation of key components needed for the future Fusion Neutron Source facilities to characterize materials envisioned for DEMO. After 13 years of fruitful collaboration, Euratom and Japan launched the second phase of the BA activities in 2020. It is focused on exploiting and enhancing the facilities that have already been built and on working more closely than ever with ITER as the latter advances towards the first plasma. In a fusion reactor, the plasma based on a deuterium-tritium reaction generates high energy neutron flux interacting with the materials of the plasma facing components. In order to study the irradiated behavior of these materials, the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) was conceived to generate these fusion relevant neutrons through d -Li stripping source. IFMIF is presently in its Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) phase under the Broader Approach agreement signed between EURATOM and Japanese Government in 2007. This agreement mandates the IFMIF/EVEDA project to validate the design of the different systems of IFMIF and to produce an integrated engineering design of IFMIF, together with the data necessary for future decisions on its construction and operation. While the Engineering Validation Activity (EVA) of the Lithium Target Facility and the Test Facility was completed by constructing prototypes, the EVA of the Accelerator Facility with the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) is still on-going at the Rokkasho Fusion Institute, Japan. JT-60SA is a joint international fusion experiment being built and operated in Japan under the framework of the Broader Approach Agreement and Japanese National Fusion Programme, aiming at an early realization of fusion energy by conducting supportive and complementary work for the ITER project, all towards supporting the basis for DEMO. In this context, a collaboration has been established via EUROfusion between Fusion for Energy and CEA to develop actively cooled targets of the JT-60SA divertor. The first Actively Cooled Divertor (ACD) target, planned to be operated in 2029, has graphite as armour material and TZM as heat sink material. To be DEMO relevant, ACD target with tungsten armour is planned to be operated in 2033, with either CuCrZr or TZM as heat sink material. This paper focusses on the choice of the design (material, dimensions) of these targets. Results of thermal and structural analysis of these targets are presented. The calculations, carried out in the environment of Ansys 2021R2 code, have taken into account the heat loading under plasma operation (with a peak heat flux of 10 MW/m2) and the electromagnetic loads from a representative plasma disruption (VDE 30 ms). In order to check the compliance with nuclear requirements, RCC-MRx 2015 has been used for the mechanical assessment of metallic components, while for the graphite the comparison between the maximum stress and the yield stress has been considered. The performed analyses show that the thermal load on target during the plasma heat loading drives target designs due to differential expansion at the interface between the heat sink and the flat tiles. Additionally, on-going assessments on these divertor targets are presented, focussing on experimental High Heat Flux testing, as well as computational thermal-hydraulic studies on enhanced target configurations. This paper presents a contrastive approach to speaker-audience interaction in political speeches, specifically, in relation to culture. It begins with a review of seminal and subsequent research based in the UK, which has shown how speakers use rhetorical devices to invite audience responses, typically applause. This is followed by evaluation of political speech research set in other nations – both Eastern (Japan and South Korea) and Western (USA and European), English-speaking and non-English-speaking – investigating how the behaviour of speakers and audiences contrasts across cultures. Proposals include, that whereas speakers in Western nations predominantly use rhetorical devices to invite audience responses implicitly , their counterparts in East Asian nations are more inclined to use explicit invitations. Furthermore, whereas invited booing is a salient feature from observations of American and French political speeches, the same cannot be said of others, particularly Japan, where such behaviour is reportedly absent. Speech-making was once regarded as monologic, but studies reported herein show how political speeches can be considered dialogic, akin to how people in conversations take turns. This paper examines the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and associated marginal costs (MC) in Japan when the government enhances the transition to battery electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) by implementing a rapid investment regime for charging stations and fossil-fueled vehicle bans. Important factors affecting BEV emissions are battery performance, battery production technology, electricity generation mix and battery minimum state of charge (SOC min). We find that in addition to a rapid investment regime, a fossil-fueled vehicles ban policy is necessary to significantly increase the uptake of BEVs and achieves the deepest reduction in life cycle GHG emissions. Under this policy, with carbon neutral electricity by 2050 and a low SOC min charging regime, life-cycle GHG emissions are reduced by 48% and the MC by 53% in 2060. A carbon neutral light transport fleet in 2050 will require carbon capture and storage to offset 24 million tonnes-CO 2 equivalent of emissions even if electricity is carbon neutral by 2050 and users adhere to a low SOC min charging regime. This study investigates the impacts of carbon pricing policies on firms' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We include two carbon pricing policies: carbon tax and emission trading scheme (ETS) at national and sub-national (province) levels, measured as policy existence (binary variable) and carbon price (continuous variable). Firms' GHG emissions are measured as total emissions and emission intensity. Using unique recent firm-level data from 2010 to 2021 from three East Asia countries (Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and the People's Republic of China (PRC)), we obtain the following key findings. First, the national carbon pricing policy significantly reduced firms' GHG emissions and GHG emission intensity in Japan and the ROK. The greater the carbon price, the greater the impact. Second, the subnational carbon pricing policies implemented in two provinces of Japan (Saitama and Tokyo) decreased firms' GHG emissions. Third, heavy industry sectors such as energy, utilities, and industrials experienced a substantial decrease in GHG emission intensity due to the carbon pricing policy. Finally, our main results are robust to different model specifications and various measures of firms' GHG emissions. Although literature studying the ex-post impact of carbon pricing on emissions at country and sector-level is abundant, this paper contributes to the existing literature providing empirical evidence of the impact of carbon pricing policies on firms' emissions using firm-level data, which is highly limited especially in Asia. Automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) plays a crucial role in enhancing the energy efficiency of air conditioning systems. Deep learning has emerged as a promising tool for image classification, and its application in the context of AFDD of HVAC systems is gaining traction due to its exceptional performance. However, the deployment cost of deep models in practical scenarios is increased due to the large number of parameters and the lack of interpretability. This paper focuses on improving the potential of deep learning models for AFDD in real HVAC systems. We use pruning to reduce the number of parameters in the model and use layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) to improve the interpretability of the model. The case study builds a simulation model and 31 kinds of fault data sets based on the actual HVAC in Japan. Based on the findings, Without loss of accuracy, the pruning method can reduce the model size by more than 99 % and maintain 90% classification accuracy. The Advanced Fusion Neutron Source (A-FNS) project is progressing at the QST Rokkasho institute, Japan. The A-FNS will conduct fusion neutron irradiation tests of materials for a fusion demonstration reactor (DEMO reactor). For these tests a high intensity deuteron beam accelerator is used to produce a high neutron flux with the neutron energies around 14 MeV. The accelerator system accelerates a deuteron beam to a beam energy of 40 MeV, guides the beam towards a liquid lithium target and shapes the uniform beam at the Li target using a magnet system. Two of the main considerations for the A-FNS high energy beam transport (HEBT) design are protection of the Superconducting Radio-Frequency linear accelerator (SRF) and vacuum system design for the interface of the HEBT and the target system. For the A-FNS, back streaming of Li vapor from the windowless free surface of the Li target is a concern. In addition, widely different vacuum pressure must be maintained between the accelerator system and the target system. The development of new technologies leads to the extensive use of abiotic resources and possible disruptions in the supply of material due to political, economic, and environmental reasons. To understand the impact of such disruptions on the economy, a comprehensive criticality assessment is necessary. As Japan is the third largest economy globally and heavily reliant of imports, the criticality of abiotic resources might become a pressing issue. However, previous criticality assessments of Japan have been limited in scope, failing to assess the overall supply disruption risks. Thus, this paper aims at identifying critical aspects of 35 abiotic materials used in the Japanese economy using the SCARCE method – an approach considering supply risk, vulnerability, social and environmental aspects to comprehensively analyse criticality. In the context of supply risk and vulnerability, the minerals niobium and phosphorus have been identified as the most critical. The criticality of niobium can be attributed to its significant trade barriers and production concentration, while that of phosphorus is primarily influenced by its high demand and lack of substitutes. Gold is the material with the highest criticality from environmental point of view due to the environmental implications related to its production. In the social context, the most critical mineral is antimony due to high level of small-scale and artisanal mining. In addition to the Japanese criticality, the results reflect the global one, showing the materials globally less critical and thus especially relevant to the Japanese economy. Next to providing results of 35 materials for evaluating their role in the Japanese economy, the underlying Python code is provided for adaptation for further criticality assessments of other regions. The ability of drones to access disaster areas has been proven powerful and flexible for acquiring first-hand optical imagery data for environmental observation. However, such imagery data usually undergo postprocessing, and the three-dimensional (3D) products are mainly for accurate land surveys. The postprocessing procedure is too time-consuming to meet instant decision support and rescue response requirements. Therefore, this paper intends to develop a systematic workflow that is able to achieve on-the-fly 3D reconstruction in disaster areas by optical imagery sequentially acquired by drones. This study proposes a strategy to spatially link sequential images (SLSI) for image localization and suitable stereopair selection. In addition, the criteria for valid epipolar stereoapair determination are developed to make the 3D dense reconstruction more automatic and effective. The 3D digital land surface can be gradually reconstructed and expanded in the computer system while the drone is capturing new images. This paper utilizes the imagery dataset of collapsed buildings induced by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan to simulate the more effective 3D reconstruction. Although the accuracy of the consequence is reported to be closely one meter, the mean data processing time for every image can achieve the level by approximately ten seconds while performing the proposed scheme on an iMac with Intel Core i5 and 16 GB random access memory (RAM). • The influence of openings on the strength and stiffness of cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls was experimentally evaluated. • The reduction in stiffness for CLT walls due to openings is relatively greater than that in strength. • Panels with rectangular openings with different orientations had different failure direction and reduction factors. The high in-plane shear strengths of cross-laminated timber (CLT) make it a good candidate for use as shear walls in buildings in areas of high seismicity such as Japan. One important aspect of CLT walls, and one that is presently poorly understood, is the influence of openings on the in-plane shear carrying capacity. The main purpose of this paper is to experimentally evaluate the effect of openings on the in-plane strength and stiffness of CLT panels with openings. In this study, 24 CLT panels were tested using a diagonal compression test configuration. In particular, they were three identical replicates of eight CLT panels. One of these eight panels was a solid panel, while the other seven panels had openings with different sizes and aspect ratios. The results showed that the panels with openings with the same area but different aspect ratios had different failure directions and reduction factors for panel shear strength and stiffness. Panels with rectangular openings with different orientations relative to the panel's major and minor shear direction had different failure direction and reduction factors. In addition, the effect of openings on the reduction of initial stiffness for CLT panels was found to be greater than their effect on the reduction of shear strength. Riverine source bordering dunes are formed by the interaction of fluvial and aeolian processes. Even in humid regions such as central Japan, small-scale, elongated aeolian dunes parallel to river channels occur intermittently; a typical example is identified where sand bars had formed along the left bank of the lower reaches of Kiso River. This paper presents the sedimentary characteristics and luminescence chronology of the aeolian dunes along the Kiso River. The sand constituting dunes is well-sorted, medium-grained and the grain size shows little variation with depth. The sand would be supplied from the riverbed via the bars by the strong west-northwesterly to westerly winds promoted by the monsoon in the dry winter when the water level of the Kiso River drops significantly. Fading corrected infrared-stimulated luminescence (IR 50) dating suggests that the dunes occurred and grew rapidly upward after about 600–700 yr ago. Increased sediment yield caused by human activities such as deforestation in the drainage basin, and the resulting increase in sediment supply to the lower reaches may have promoted the formation of dunes. However, with the construction of continuous levees, the reduced sediment supply related to dam construction, and the lowering of the riverbed, the connectivity between sand bars and dunes declined, and most of the dunes appear to have been stable for the past century. Fluvial sand supply influenced by human activities as well as strong winds during the dry season plays a crucial role in the formation of riverine source bordering dunes in humid regions. Large-scale seismic structural tests are crucial to validating both structural design methodologies and the effectiveness of seismic isolation devices. However, considering the significant costs of such tests, it is essential to leverage data from completed tests by taking advantage of numerical models of the tested structures, updated using data collected from the experiments, to complete additional studies that may be difficult, unsafe or impossible to test physically. However, updating complex numerical models poses its own challenges. The first contribution of this paper is to develop a multi-stage model updating method suitable for high-order models of base-isolated structures, which is motivated and evaluated through modeling and model updating of a full-scale four-story base-isolated reinforced-concrete frame building that was tested in 2013 at the NIED E-Defense laboratory in Japan. In most studies involving model updating, all to-be-updated parameters are typically updated simultaneously; however, given the observation that the superstructure in this study predominantly moves as a rigid body in low-frequency modes and the isolation layer plays a minor role in all other modes, this study proposes updating parameters in stages: first, the linear superstructure parameters are updated so that its natural frequencies and mode shapes match those identified via a subspace system identification of the experimental building responses to low-level random excitations; then, the isolation-layer device linear parameters are updated so that the natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes of the three isolation modes match. These two stages break a large-scale linear model updating problem into two smaller problems, thereby reducing the search space for the to-be-updated parameters, which generally reduces computational costs regardless of what optimization algorithm is adopted. Due to the limited instrumentation, the identified modes constitute only a subset of all modes; to match each identified mode with a FEM mode, the second contribution is a procedure proposed to compare each identified mode with a candidate set of FEM modes and to select the best match. Further, nonlinear isolation-layer device models are proposed, updated and validated with experimental data. This paper describes a framework for regional scale coseismic landslide evaluation that combines physics-based wave propagation simulation at a regional scale, with flexible sliding analysis at a site scale. The physics-based simulation incorporates fault rupture process, complex topography and dynamic site response. The sliding displacements of flexible masses are calculated by integrating seismic parameter k obtained from the physics-based simulation over seismic resistance. The framework is applied to the case study of coseismic landslides during the 2016 M w 7.0 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan, which has well documented fault mechanism, geologic information and landslide inventory. The performance of the model prediction is evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. This study highlights the near-fault effect and soil nonlinear effect on landslide distribution, and it is demonstrated that the landslide prediction can be notably improved with the consideration of topographic amplification of ground motions. Empirical correlations between topographic amplification of key intensity measures and parameterized topographic features are developed. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) specifies that an overall network of at least 40 International Monitoring System (IMS) stations should monitor the presence of radioxenon in the atmosphere upon its entry into force. The measurement of radioxenon concentrations in the air is one of the major techniques to detect underground nuclear explosions. It is, together with radionuclide particulate monitoring, the only component of the network able to confirm whether an event originates from a nuclear test, leaving the final proof to on-site inspection. Correct and accurate interpretation of radioxenon detections by State Signatories is a key parameter of the verification regime of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). In this context, the discrimination between the highly variable radioxenon background generated by normal operations of nuclear facilities and CTBT-relevant events is a challenging, but critical, task. To this end, the radioxenon background that can be expected at IMS noble gas systems must be sufficiently characterized and understood. All activities conducted to study the global radioxenon background are focused on the calibration and performance of the verification system as described in the Treaty. The unique CTBTO noble gas system network is designed to optimally covering the globe. By the end of 2019, 31 systems were put in operation, 25 of which being already certified. It took two decades from the first experimental setup of noble gas system in the field to reach this stage of maturity. In the meantime, it was an urgent need to gain empirical evidence of atmospheric radioxenon concentrations with the full spectrum of characteristics that IMS noble gas systems may be observing. This experience was significantly advanced through temporary measurement campaigns. Their objective was to gain the additional necessary knowledge for a correct understanding and categorization of radioxenon detections. The site selection for these campaigns put emphasis on regions with low coverage by the initially few experimental noble gas systems at IMS locations or where potential interferences with normal background might be observed. Short-term measurements were first initiated in 2008. Sites of potential interest were identified, and campaigns up to few weeks were performed. Based on the findings of these short campaigns, transportable systems were procured by the CTBTO. Longer temporary measurement campaigns were started afterwards and operated by local hosts in different regions of the globe. Site selections were based on purely scientific criteria. Objectives of the measurement campaigns were continually reassessed, and projects were designed to meet the scientific needs for radioxenon background understanding as required for nuclear explosion monitoring. As of today, several thousands of samples have been collected and measured. Spectra of temporary measurement campaigns were (and are still) analysed in the International Data Centre (IDC). As they are not part of the CTBT monitoring system, no IDC product is generated. Analysis results are stored in a non-operational database of the CTBTO and made available, together with raw data, to authorized users of States Signatories through a Secure Web Portal (SWP) and to scientific institutions for approved research projects through a virtual Data Exploitation Centre (vDEC) after signing a cost-free confidentiality agreement (https://www.ctbto.org/specials/vdec). This paper aims at providing an overview of the temporary measurement campaigns conducted by the CTBTO since the very first field measurements. It lays out scientific results in a systematic approach. This overview demonstrates the asset of radioxenon background measurement data that have been collected with a wide variety of characteristics that may be observed at IMS stations. It bears a tremendous opportunity for development, enhancement and validation of methodologies for CTBT monitoring. Motivated by the novel viewpoint that the two major corporate sustainability disclosure theories – that is, legitimacy theory and voluntary disclosure theory – are not exclusively competing, this study re-evaluates the two theories using our quality-based climate disclosure measures developed based on the 2018 CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) questionnaire. From Tobit and ordinal logistic regression analyses with the public chemical firms in the United States and Japan, we document that firms with higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are more likely to choose extensive low -quality climate change disclosure rather than high -quality. This finding supports the legitimacy theory that firms tend to utilize low -quality climate change disclosure to obfuscate and legitimize their GHG emissions. However, we do not find evidence supporting the voluntary disclosure theory that superior performers prefer extensive high -quality climate change disclosure rather than low -quality. This paper contributes to the literature by providing new theoretical insights on whether and how firms utilize quality-based climate change disclosure strategies in an attempt to achieve the goals accompanied by the two theories. Furthermore, our findings provide an important practical implication for regulators and policymakers that more concrete and stringent climate disclosure rules could effectively curb inferior performers' discretionary behavior to engage in low -quality disclosure. Topography results from the interplay between rock uplift and erosion, and studying river responses to active tectonics may enable the rates and spatial distribution of rock uplift to be inferred. Normalized channel steepness index (k sn) is widely used to infer rock uplift rates, and rock erodibility plays a significant role in determining the variation of channel steepness in response to external forces. Various measures may be applied to evaluate rock erodibility; however, since they are essentially qualitative, it is difficult to quantify relationships between rock mass strength and channel forms. In this study, we inferred long-term rock uplift rates along the Futagawa fault, an active normal-dextral fault, and the Idenokuchi fault, an active normal fault, in southwestern Japan, based on morphological characteristics of rivers across substrates with contrasting erodibility. The widely used detachment-limited model predicts that, when the rock uplift rate is spatially uniform, the ratio of erodibility of different rock types can be written by an inverse ratio of their k sn values. We employed this theoretical prediction to quantitatively calibrate the effects of rock mass strength on channel steepness. Within the study area, channel steepness was larger in the eastern part where volcanic rocks were exposed than in the western part where less resistant sedimentary rocks predominated. We calculated ratios of substrate erodibility using drainage basins close to the Futagawa fault that experienced similar rock uplift. Calibrated k sn exhibited a clear difference between the eastern and the western part of the fault, suggesting that contrasting erodibility alone cannot explain the observed channel steepness. We also confirmed that the observed channel steepness could not be explained without differential rock uplift, even when considering the combined effects of channel width, precipitation, and erosion process. The distribution of long-term rock uplift rates inferred from calibrated k sn and vertical slip rates of the fault compiled from published papers agree with the distribution of vertical displacement of the earthquake that occurred on the fault in 2016, suggesting that earthquakes similar to the 2016 event have occurred repeatedly in the study area. • We calibrated channel steepness based on the erodibility of substrate materials. • Spatial distribution of long-term uplift is inferred from bedrock river morphology. • Long-term uplift is similar to the vertical displacement of the 2016 earthquake. In general, preliminary or primary cost estimates are used to select contractors from among bidders in Japan. The primary cost estimate must be accurate, otherwise the contractor selected from the bidding process will lose profit. A general contractor in the world does not have a super-skilled engineer who can achieve the accurate primary cost estimates. The conventional primary estimate has a high error range and low reliability. An automated system converting detailed estimates to primary estimates has been highly demanded in the world. This paper presents a prototype AI converter that can accurately and automatically convert detailed cost estimates into primary estimates. Converting detailed cost estimates to primary estimates lies in a regression problem. This paper proposes a feature-elimination based data augmentation method for regression problems. The empirical experiment shows that the proposed data augmentation method is quite effective with an Extra-Trees ensemble method. The proposed method was empirically examined by using Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) dataset for accurately predicting constructions costs with the Extra-Trees algorithm and random forest algorithm respectively. During and after World War II, around 2.4 million Japanese died overseas. The bodies of nearly half of them are still missing as they remain in the field where they fell and have never been repatriated. The tasks of recovering and repatriating the remains of Japanese war dead started in 1953 by the former Ministry of Health and Welfare, and are now carried out by the Social Welfare and War Victims' Relief Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). In 2016, the "Act on Promoting the Recovery of the Remains of Japanese War Dead (Act No. 12 of 2016)" was enacted. The Act designates Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 (from April 2016 to March 2017) to FY 2024 as the period of intensive implementation and stipulates that the state shall establish a process to promote the identification of the war dead. In line with this Act, physical anthropologists were employed as full-time experts by the MHLW to conduct scientific analysis on the remains in the field, and since then, they have accompanied all overseas delegations for repatriation. The authors of this paper have been sent to the sites in the partner countries overseas such as the former Soviet Union, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, and nationally to Ioto (Iwo Jima) to analyze the minimum number of individuals (MNI), ancestry, age at death, and sex of the remains. Along with the morphological investigations, DNA analyses of mitochondrial polymorphism and Y-chromosomal/autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) have been applied for estimation of the ancestry and identification of the individual. By narrowing down the possible candidates based on the historical records such as name list of the missing, if individual identification of the remains is achieved, the remains are returned to the bereaved families, and if not, they are placed in the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery in Tokyo to rest in peace. Also, the implementation of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses with next generation sequencing (NGS) for ancestry is under discussion. 7-Methyl-2H-1,5-benzodioxepin-3(4H)-one (Calone®) is used in fragrances to impart a marine note. It is produced industrially at volumes requiring repeated dose and developmental/reproductive toxicology data (OECD TG 422) under European chemicals legislation (i.e., REACH). Additionally, Japanese chemicals legislation requires evaluation of Calone® biodegradability and identification of metabolites in an environmental biodegradation test. 7-Methyl-2H-1,5-benzodioxepin-3-ol (Calol) was the sole metabolite identified following biodegradation and a 28-day repeated dose toxicity study (OECD TG 407) would normally be required to support registration in Japan. The current paper presents results showing no adverse effects in the parental, reproductive, or developmental phases of an OECD TG 422 study following dietary administration of Calone® to rats at targeted doses of up to 1000 mg/kg/day. The No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) was the highest administered dose of 791 and 922 mg/kg/day for males and females, respectively. An i n vitro metabolism study conducted with rat and human liver microsomes demonstrated that greater than 90% of Calone® was metabolically reduced into Calol, the same metabolite observed in the environmental biodegradation test. Accordingly, the results from the OECD TG 422 study with Calone® are directly applicable to Calol and it would be expected to have the same NOAEL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Equations for predicting creep rupture life of grade 91 steel have been revised officially in Japan and European Union. First, the revised equations are examined with a large creep rupture database on the steel. The database consists of 2066 data points, and its longest creep rupture life is 232,833 h crept at 600 °C. The equations deviate from data points of the database in a long-term region beyond 30,000 h. Decrease in activation energy for creep rupture life in the long-term region is the cause of the deviation. A multi-region analysis of the database can be a probable way of reducing the deviation. However, some modifications of the analysis are necessary when applying it to the large database containing data points of multiple heats. A trial of the modifications is made in the second part of this paper. The equations obtained through the trial can well represent all the data points including the ones in the long-term region. • The equations for creep rupture life proposed are examined with a large database. • The database consists of 2066 data points and the longest rupture life is 233,000 h. • The ECCC and METI equations overestimate long-term creep rupture life of Gr. 91 steel. • Multi-region analysis is modified for applying it to the multiple-heats database. • The multi-region analysis can appropriately represent long-term creep rupture life. A probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis code PASCAL was developed in Japan for probabilistic integrity assessment of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) considering neutron irradiation embrittlement and pressurized thermal shock (PTS) transients. To strengthen the practical applications of PFM methodology in Japan, PASCAL has been upgraded to a new version, PASCAL5, which enables PFM analyses of RPVs in both PWRs and boiling water reactors (BWRs) subjected to a broad range of transients, including PTS and normal operational transients. In this paper, the recent improvements in PASCAL5 are described such as the incorporated stress intensity factor solutions and corresponding calculation methods for external surface cracks and embedded cracks near the RPV outer surface. In addition, the analysis conditions and evaluation models recommended for PFM analyses of Japanese RPVs in BWRs are investigated. With the frequent coastal activities of human beings, tens of thousands of tons of floating marine plastics pose a serious threat to marine ecosystems and human survival. This paper studies the feasibility of regional marine plastic garbage management, taking the Northwest Pacific as the research object. According to the Cobb-Douglas utility function of the costs and benefits of plastic processing in China, Japan and South Korea, the Shapley value method was used to analyze it. The study found that the data were substituted into the Shapley value model of cooperative game for calculation, and the results showed that any country joining the triple alliance U would create greater benefits, and obtain higher benefits than the sub alliance. It is a triple win situation for China, Japan and the South Korea to jointly manage marine plastic in the Northwest Pacific. The results of the model confirm that the three countries are willing to maintain long-term cooperation on marine plastic governance, this method can be used to solve the trans-national marine governance innovatively and promote regional ocean cooperation governance. China's economic growth has been progressively moving towards reducing carbon intensity. In parallel, Japan has long been regarded as the pioneer of energy efficiency worldwide. Why have these two economic giants had such different experiences of carbon intensity in the past decades? A closer examination in both countries may hold vital clues, which are still very unclear. This paper compares the patterns of carbon intensity between China and Japan, in which we propose a bilateral-country decomposition framework by combining production-theoretical decomposition analysis and index decomposition analysis. The decomposition highlights the effects of emission factor, energy structure, sectoral structure, substitution among labor-energy and capital-energy, and technological progress. The results show that the energy structure, sectoral structure, and capital-energy substitution are the main drivers behind that China is much higher carbon intensity than Japan, accounting for 26%, 25%, and 38%, respectively. Yet, these effects also narrowed the carbon intensity gap between China and Japan over the years. Furthermore, the labor-energy substitution effect has generally decreased the carbon intensity gap. Global trade not only brings about the exchange of goods and services, but also stimulates the transfer of carbon emissions. Given different economic development stages and industrial structures, global carbon inequality occurs due to the mismatch between trade-related carbon emissions and value added. Combining the multi-regional input-output model and regional environmental index (REI), this paper constructs an integrated research framework to trace the embodied carbon emissions and value-added among six regions from 2010 to 2015 to shed light on global carbon inequality from a multi-regional perspective. The results indicate that major carbon exporters are placed in inferior positions in global trade, rendering them victims of carbon inequality. The EU, Japan and the USA have been favored by global trade from both economic and environmental perspectives, and the advantaged position of the EU has improved whereas the positions of Japan and the USA have slightly decreased. For disadvantage regions, China and ASEAN10 has improved their situations, yet the inequality suffered by the RoW148 has deteriorated. Adjusting the export structure from primary to advanced products is an effective measure to mitigate global carbon inequality. One of the causes of the discoloration is thought to be nutrient depletion (oligotrophication) due to nutrient uptake by diatoms. The goal of our study was to elucidate the mechanisms underlying phytoplankton blooms and the effects of such blooms on comprehensive nutrient cycles in the benthic-pelagic ecosystem. We developed a new ecosystem model, EMAGIN-L.P., simultaneously representing phytoplankton life cycle and the benthic-pelagic ecosystem. The life cycles of four types of phytoplankton—dinoflagellates (DFL), small diatoms (SDA), Coscinodiscus wailesii (CDW), and Eucampia zodiacus (EZ)—were numerically modeled and incorporated into an existing ecosystem model, ECOHYM (Sohma et al., 2008a), representing the food web among the benthic and pelagic systems and carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus-oxygen-coupled cycles driven by biogeochemical and physical processes. The model was applied to the Harima-Nada Sea where the discoloration of nori frequently occurs. The model reproduced the differences in timing and scale of the four phytoplankton blooms, and each bloom could be explained by a combination of temperature suitability, light availability, nutrient limitation, and vertical mixing within the water column. Furthermore, through a sensitivity analysis, competition for nutrient uptake among different types of phytoplankton was observed in the model. That is, from June to October, when DFL and SDA blooms occur, the SDA nutrient uptake rate is high and SDA suppresses the DFL bloom, while from November to March, when CDW and EZ blooms occur, the nutrient uptake rate of EZ is high and the CDW bloom is slightly suppressed. The developed model representing the phytoplankton bloom mechanisms in the whole benthic-pelagic coupled ecosystem will be a useful tool for revealing the mechanisms underlying the nutrient cycle and the contribution of harmful diatom blooms to the discoloration of nori. The modeling approach presented in this paper (i.e., categorizing different types of major phytoplankton and incorporating their life cycle into the entire benthic-pelagic coupling ecosystem) can be an effective method to understand, predict, and manage the problems caused by harmful diatom blooms across different damage types, harmful diatom species, and ocean areas. This paper presents a new wave reduction method, called the Net Buffer Method, to reduce caisson joint waves for suppressing internal erosion and collapse behind seawalls and quaywalls. Caisson joints may fail or widen due to the repeated action of waves that pass though the joints. The new method, in which a net fiber material is installed within the joints, is capable of reducing such caisson joint waves by more than 80% in terms of the maximum and average wave pressures. Unlike previous countermeasures, it is applicable to joints of variable width and can autonomically adjust to changes in the configuration and surrounding environment due to continued wave impacts and other dynamic forcing such as earthquakes. This study considers the emissions implications of co-combusting imported ammonia in coal-fired power stations. The study adopts a supply chain approach, estimating the emissions reduction potential of 20% ammonia co-combustion in coal-fired power stations in the country of use, and the emissions associated with ammonia production in the country of origin. The paper considers the emissions implications of using different ammonia production technologies: Haber-Bosch (HB) ammonia production with hydrogen generated from steam methane reforming using natural gas (SMR), with and without carbon capture and storage (CCS); Haber-Bosch ammonia production with hydrogen generated from renewable sources; and fully renewable electricity generated ammonia. The empirical setting of the study is an ammonia supply chain encompassing Japan and Australia. The results show co-combustion of ammonia produced with SMR-HB provides no net benefit for the combined country emissions, as ammonia production related greenhouse emissions in Australia are equivalent to the emission reductions in Japan. In contrast, co-firing ammonia produced from fully renewable sources reduces emissions in the two countries in 2030 by 43 MT per annum. SMR-HB processes with varying levels of CCS reduce annual emissions by 16–34 MT. This paper focuses on the development and verification of a unified calculation method for estimating the yield of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, columns, and walls deformation considering flexural deformations, shear deformations, and bar slip deformations. Each component of yield deformation is considered independently, and the estimated yield deformation is the sum of these three parts. To verify the accuracy of this method, yield deformation results from a database of experimental results from tests performed in Japan on RC components was compared against those predicted by the proposed methods. The results show that the proposed method provides a reasonable prediction of the yield deformation and show that the proposed method has a better estimate of yield deformation than other previous methods. Sensitivity analysis on the influence of the rigidity reduction rate due to the shear effect, and the anchorage length in the bar slippage calculation, was performed. Until today, the volume and trade relationships of the global coal trade still follow an increasing trend, which adversely affects both the environment and coal supply security. However, whether the possibility exists to change this trend to a decrease in global coal trade competition remains unknown. If this were possible, the volume and relationships of coal trade would gradually decrease. To address this question, this paper applies the complex network model and comprehensively explores the dynamic competitive relationship and intensity among the global coal import trade. At the global level, the results indicate that more competitive relationships regarding coal imports emerge, and the coal import competition network has changed from a core periphery structure to a reticular structure. In addition, the competitive intensity of the global coal trade continues to rise. At the regional level, the role of the Asian-Pacific region, led by Japan and China, in the evolution of this competitive pattern is increasingly becoming prominent. In contrast, the competitive intensity of European importers has declined since 2007. At the national level, Japan bore the greatest competitive pressure among all coal-importing countries from 1998 to 2007, when it was replaced by China. The intensity of competition in China has increased fiercely, from seventh in 2009 to first in 2016. Finally, based on the results, meaningful policy implications are presented. For example, it is recommended that the result of record-high levels of coal competition in Asia should receive more attention, and a more appropriate use of coal should be developed. Microgrids are an attractive way to deal with energy depletion and environmental deterioration as well as grid pressure. However, the energy configurations of microgrids comprising various uncertain and variable resources are significantly sophisticated. Focusing on the peak shaving ability and carbon reduction effect of microgrids, this paper proposes a multi-criteria evaluation method that aims to maximize the comprehensive value of microgrids. To unify these criteria with different perspectives when solving the optimization problem, the peak shaving and emission reduction effects are converted into economies through peak load cost and carbon tax rather than using the weighting method. The results of a case study in Higashida, Japan obviously evidenced the superiority of multi-objective optimization. Although the improvement of the peak shaving ability and emission reduction effect was partially at the expense of system cost benefit, the total cost under multi-criteria was still reduced by 2.13%, which indicates that the balance and optimization of the economic benefit, peak shaving and carbon reduction were realized. The effect of each evaluation criterion on the optimal configuration was analyzed by comparing the optimization results under objective functions with different criteria combinations. • Temporal variation of atmospheric concentration of tritiated water vapor (HTO) in the vicinity of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is reported for the first time. • Monthly atmospheric HTO concentration during a period 2017–2019. • The atmospheric HTO concertation at different two sampling sites are compared. Continuous measurement of tritium in the atmosphere is important to evaluate the environmental impact of nuclear facilities and fusion facilities as well as to elucidate tritium behavior in the environment. A passive type sampler is powerful tool to conduct long-term monitoring because this does not require any power supply. This paper demonstrated the effectiveness of the passive type sampler for continuous measurement and characterized temporal variation of atmospheric concentration of tritiated water vapor around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The atmospheric concentrations were successfully obtained at two sampling sites and ranged within the variation in past observation although the concentration at one of the two sites was slightly higher than that of background level in Japan. Additionally, we measured the tritium concentrations of soil pore water and free water in pine needles. These values indicated the validity of the measured atmospheric tritium concentrations. Despite increasing attention in recent years, only a limited number of studies have investigated the determinants of landowner re-enrollment intentions in conservation incentive programs. However, none of these studies controlled for the potential self-selection of participants. The concern for a self-selection bias is policy relevant because researchers and policymakers investigate the determinants of re-enrollment not only to predict the retention rate of participants but also to promote the long-term success of conservation programs. This paper uses data on eligible landowners, consisting of both participants and non-participants, from a forest incentive program in Japan to examine the determinants of the participants' re-enrollment decision, controlling for a rich set of observable landowner attributes, and conditioning on the unobserved participants' attributes which are identified by modeling the re-enrollment decision jointly with the decision to participate. The empirical results indicate that the unconditional marginal effects from the separate re-enrollment model are biased by selection and underestimate the effects by between 12% and 48%. The results also show that the observable factors that attract landowners to participate also tend to encourage participants to remain in the program. With Japan's current plans to reach a fully decarbonized society by 2050 and establish a hydrogen society, substantial changes to its energy system need to be made. Due to the limited land availability in Japan, significant amounts of hydrogen are planned to be imported to reach both targets. In this paper, a novel stochastic version of the open-source multi-sectoral Global Energy System Model in conjunction with a power system dispatch model is used to analyze the impacts of both availability and price of hydrogen imports on the transformation of the Japanese energy system considering a net-zero emission target. This analysis highlights that hydrogen poses a valuable resource in specific sectors of the energy system. Therefore, importing hydrogen can indeed positively impact energy system developments, although up to 19mt of hydrogen will be imported in the case with the cheapest available hydrogen. In contrast, without any hydrogen imports, power demand nearly doubles in 2050 compared to 2019 due to extensive electrification in non-electricity sectors. However, hydrogen imports are not necessarily required to reach net-zero emissions. Structural engineers face a dilemma in assessing the residual seismic capacity of damaged buildings after an earthquake, especially for buildings with lightly to moderately damaged elements that might not need repair but require to be assessed for their performance in aftershocks and future major earthquakes. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of pre-damage levels on residual seismic capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) wall tests, by conducting quasi-static, cyclic loading tests of reinforced concrete shear walls. A comparison of the reduction in stiffness, deformation capacity, and strength to existing guidelines regarding residual seismic evaluation is investigated. This study presents experimental results of eleven ¼ scaled RC wall tests that were divided into three series based on the wall reinforcement ratio and the shape of the wall boundary elements. Within each series, the effect of four levels of initial damage on the wall performance was investigated. The specimens were designed to fail in shear to represent the shear walls in Onagawa nuclear power plant buildings in Japan. The results showed that no significant deterioration in ultimate strength and maximum deformation capacity due to slight to severe previous damage. In midsummer (July-August) of 2017, the high temperature (HT) frequency in China breaks the record since 1951. For each HT threshold from 35 °C to 40 °C, the frequency is beyond the normal by 2.58–3.46 standard deviations. Specifically, the HT events in southern China make major contributions to the new record, and they demonstrate obvious temporal variations. The strongest episode in southern China appears in mid-to-late July and lasts for nearly 20 days. The westward extension and intensification of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) is usually considered as the leading factor of the HT in southern China. However, the diagnostic analysis in this paper shows that the 2017 HT event does not correspond to the intensification of the whole WPSH but to its western part, and there is a cyclonic circulation anomaly over the western Pacific warm pool, which is closely related to the southward extension of the middle-latitude trough over the east side of Japan. This circulation pattern is favorable for the southward retreat of the WPSH northern boundary over the warm pool, which results in the shape change and even the split of the high. Then the west part of the high is incapable of withdrawing eastward, and it dominates over the southern China steadily, leading to the persistent HT events. This conclusion is further confirmed by the statistical analysis both of the multi-year circulations and the typical HT extreme case in 2013, which could provide reference for the sub-seasonal prediction of HT in southern China. • China suffered the record-breaking extreme high temperature event in July-August 2017 since 1951. • Middle-latitude trough over the East of Japan was first found in causing a constant westward WPSH. • The leading influence of the trough could be considered in the forecast of HT event in southern China. It is a widely recognized phenomenon that, in negative ion sources for NBI, the magnetic fields in the source cause an asymmetry of the current density at the meniscus, which affects the beam optics. In order to achieve a more realistic estimation of the negative ion beam optics, the ion current density profile at the beamlet meniscus is sometimes assumed to be non-symmetric with respect to the beamlet axis. The new hypothesis tested in this paper is an empirical law obtained by recent investigations on a similar Kamaboko ion source, which relates this asymmetry to the magnetic field strength at the meniscus and to the power injected in the ion source. For the first time this hypothesis is used to directly and correctly predict the value of the beamlet deflection. The MeV ion source Test Facility (MTF) is a high voltage negative ion beam accelerator dedicated to fusion experiments in QST, Naka, Ibaraki, Japan. MTF can be operated as a three- or five-stage multi-aperture accelerator with a configuration and beam energy comparable to the future ITER NBI. In 2019, experiments were conducted on MTF aiming at accelerating a H- beam with high energy and good optics for a long duration of the beam (around 100 s). These experiments allowed to measure the beamlet divergence and deflection as well as the heat loads due to particle impinging on the accelerator grids, over a wide range of operating parameters. The predictions of several beam simulation codes (Opera, COMSOL, SLACCAD, EAMCC3D) have been compared to the experimental measurements, which allows to obtain a good agreement in terms of beam optics and a fair agreement in terms of heat loads.
