1. Compositional changes of dissolved organic matter during high flow events in headwater catchments along a gradient of climate and land use

Abstract

High flow events in headwater catchments are associated with changes in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition. The aim of this work was to determine whether these changes are characteristic of headwater catchments and similar to what has been observed in other catchments. The evolution of the DOM composition during flood events was studied for five catchments covering a range of climatic, soil and land use contexts. The DOM composition was analyzed by thermochemolysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, making it possible to perform a joint analysis of several biomolecule families, monitor the proportion of compounds derived from plant inputs (%VEG) and study the lignin composition through the C/V ratio. The %VEG increased for all flood events studied. As this parameter is linked to the aromaticity of DOM, these increases are in line with worldwide observations. However, observations of increases in DOM aromaticity during floods in tropical and arctic zones are few and contradictory. This observation seems to be a general feature of temperate climates. This increase in aromaticity was accompanied by an increase in the C/V ratio for all rainfall-related flood events, indicating the mobilization of less biodegraded dissolved lignins than during base flows. These observations are in line with those made in the United States of America and could be characteristic of headwater catchments.

This was quantified by statistically relating the isotopic and lipid composition of SOM to benthic nutrient fluxes in 200 intertidal mudflats sampled along the Brittany coast (France). The origin of SOM explained 24% and 31% of the variance of $\text{NH}_4^+$ and $\text{PO}_4^{3-}$ fluxes, respectively. The $\text{NH}_4^+$ fluxes were driven by the uptake by phytoplankton of dissolved anthropogenic N exported from agricultural catchments. Their sedimentation is favoured by low hydrodynamic conditions, enriching the sediments with labile OM. The $\text{PO}_4^{3-}$ fluxes were driven by the sedimentation of particulate P exported through agricultural soil erosion.

Abstract

A broad sampling program was carried out in the spring of 2019 on the Brittany coast to assess how the surface sediment characteristics drive the benthic effluxes of ammonium ($\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$) and phosphate ($\mathrm{PO}_{4}$) from intertidal mudflats. A total of 200 sediment samples were characterized by their porosity, grain-size, elemental composition and pigment contents, as well as the benthic fluxes of $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{PO}_{4}$ determined by core incubations. The results showed that (1) a high phaeopigment and iron-bound phosphorus content (Fe-P) and a low porosity were significantly related to the high $\mathrm{PO}_{4}$ flux, and (2) a high porosity and the TN:Org-P ratio in the sediment organic matter (SOM) were related to the high $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ flux. This indicated that $\mathrm{PO}_{4}$ fluxes would be more driven by the redox status of the sediment through the desorption of Fe-P under specific anoxic conditions during the algal decomposition. $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ fluxes would be more driven by high $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ recycling rates from SOM mineralization and high sediment–water exchanges, enhancing the diffusion of $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ to the overlying water. The present study allowed to highlight the large variability in the benthic nutrient fluxes at the regional scale, as a result of the connections between microbial (SOM mineralization), chemical (adsorption–desorption) and physical (diffusion) processes.

Abstract

The amber fossil record is distributed worldwide but mainly supported by Northern Hemisphere deposits.The Southern Hemisphere amber fossil record is relatively scarce, due to difficulties of access andprospection. The African continent recently revealed two new amber outcrops. Previously, fossiliferous andnon fossiliferous copals were known from Africa, as well as older fossilised resins lacking fossil inclusions1.The Cretaceous resin from Congo, and the Cenozoic resin from Ethiopia, are the first African ambers knownto display arthropod and botanical inclusions.When first mentioned in 20102, the Ethiopian amber was suggested Cretaceous. This dating was rapidlyquestioned by the modern lineage taxa, described from the fossilized resin3,4. Those rather display a Cenozoicassemblage. Palynological data and field observations corroborate this revision and further indicate aMiocene age of the amber. The resin originates from an angiosperm, probably Hymenaea (Fabaceae), assuggested by its chemical signal, and the associated botanical inclusions. Cryptogam and arthropod inclusions(mainly Hymenoptera and Diptera) already display a large diversity of modern taxa. All together, fossilisedspecimens illustrate a subtropical, hot and humid, swamp forest ecosystem. Similarities with the botanicaland entomofaunal composition of the contemporaneous Dominican and Mexican ambers, suggest anaffinities between African and American Miocene ecosystems.References1. Abstract

International audience; Storm events modify groundwater-surface dynamics, changing concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationships and thus nutrient export from watersheds. C-Q variations are helpful indicators of hydrologic and biogeochemical processes. The activation of new pathways, release of old water, and/or the chemical reaction of the material (rock, soil, organic matter) with new water explain these relations. However, due to the complexity of these systems, it is difficult to only use elemental concentrations to resolve the problem of changes in transport and/or reaction pathways. Reactive tracers such as isotope ratios “R” (e.g., silicon isotopes, δ30Si), can additionally provide fingerprints reflecting changes in flow paths or reactivity in response to hydrologic events.Here, we analyze in-stream δ30Si-C-Q relationships during a storm event in the agricultural headwater catchment of Kervidy-Naizin, part of the AgrHyS Observatory in France. Groundwater, soil porewater and stream samples were taken under baseflow conditions, in addition to high-frequency sampling of the stream during storm (1 sample/hour). Major cations and anions, metals, DOC and δ30Si were determined.Baseflow isotope data show that soil solutions have heavier δ30Si signature than groundwater, while stream water δ30Si is likely a mix of these two sources. During the storm, Si concentration exhibits a dilution pattern and δ30Si values decrease on the rising limb, and reverse on the falling limb. One explanation of δ30Si behavior could be the contribution of a higher fraction of groundwater into the stream. However, the strong dilution of NO3- (related to groundwater reservoir) rejects this hypothesis. In contrast the flushing behavior of DOC and metals, associated to the soil, suggest an increase of water flowing through the soil layer. The decrease of the δ30Si signature can be explained by the dissolution of clays in the soil, which is also supported by the decrease of Si/Al ratio and the increase of total Si exports during the storm. Our results point to changes in both water flow paths and reaction networks as drivers for the C-Q-R relationships.

Abstract

National audience; Pour caractériser les processus d’altération dans des contextes peu impactés par lesactivités anthropiques, nous proposons de les étudier à l’échelle de l’archipel desKerguelen, un des territoires émergés les moins impactés par l’activité humaine àl’échelle mondiale. Une campagne d’échantillonnage de rivières de cet archipel futréalisée en 2019/2020 (Talisker, IPEV 1077) pour constituer une base de données de lacomposition géochimique des rivières des Kerguelen. Quatre régions différentes ont étésélectionnées, marquées par des contrastes climatiques (pluviométrie essentiellement)et lithologiques (basaltes avec intrusions de roches plus ou moins différenciées)significatifs : Péninsule Courbet (rivière du Château), Plateau Central (rivièred’Armor), Nord-Est Cook (rivière des Monts Ballon) et Presqu'île de la Société deGéographie (plusieurs système hydrologiques).Les résultats montrent des variations de concentrations en éléments majeurs de ceseaux importantes de près d’un ordre de grandeur. Plus important, les données fontapparaitre une typologie assez nette de la composition chimique des eaux en fonctiondes régions étudiées. A l’échelle de l’archipel, ces variations ne peuvent pas s’expliquerpar une contribution de pluie variable d’une région à l’autre. Elles ne peuvent pass’expliquer non plus par la seule diversité des lithologies drainées et de la variation deleur répartition d’une région à l’autre. L’étude des caractéristiques géomorphologiquesde ces régions nous conduit à proposer que le contexte géomorphologique des rivièresest un paramètre à prendre en compte pour expliquer leur variation géochimique dansces régions volcaniques sous climat océanique sub-polaire. Plus spécifiquement nosdonnées indiquent qu’une part probablement importante de l’altération des roches sefait dans les zones de colluvions de fond de vallées et qu’à l’échelle de cet archipel lesprocessus d’altération chimique et d’érosion mécanique sont assez fortement découplésspatialement dans le bassin versant. Ces premières données nous conduisent àproposer un schéma conceptuel de la dynamique des processus d’altération et d’érosionà l’échelle de l’archipel, certainement applicable à d’autres contextes subpolaires, quidemande maintenant à être davantage testé.

Abstract

National audience; L’ambre est une formidable source de données pour la reconstitution des écosystèmesterrestres anciens, mais sa distribution géographique et stratigraphique demeurelacunaire. En Afrique, l’ambre est relativement rare et le plus souvent dépourvud’inclusions organiques fossiles. Le premier ambre crétacé fossilifère africain,découvert récemment dans la chaine du Mayombe, en République du Congo, estprésenté ici.L’ambre s’est accumulé avec des débris végétaux dans le terme argilo-dolomitique quiconstitue la partie supérieure de la Formation Chéla (un équivalent du membre Vembode la Formation Gamba du Gabon) et daté de l’Aptien moyen par l’étude de soncontenu micropaléontologique (palynomorphes et ostracodes). La caractérisation del’ambre par thermochimiolyse couplée à la spectrométrie de masse (THM-GC-MS)indique une résine de classe Ib typique des gymnospermes, et plus particulièrement desfamilles de conifères Araucariaceae, Cupressaceae, Podocarpaceae, etCheirolepidiaceae. Les bois fossilisés trouvés avec l’ambre sont attribuables aux genresAgathoxylon et Brachyoxylon, tandis que les gen- res Araucariacites et Classopollis(ce dernier abondant) sont présents parmi les palynomorphes, suggérant uneAraucariaceae ou une Cheirolepidiaceae comme plante source de la résine.L’ambre du Congo se présente majoritairement sous la forme de galets de couleur rougesombre, peu translucides. La prospection et l’étude d’inclusions fossiles, réalisées aumoyen de la microscopie standard et de l’imagerie synchrotron, ont permis ladécouverte d’une faune diversifiée d’arachnides (Acari: Gustavioidea, Anystoidea;Araneae), d’insectes (Hyme- noptera: Evaniidae, Platygastroidea; Hemiptera:Aleyrodidae; Psocoptera: Trogiomorpha; Diptera: Chironomidae), ainsi que denombreux débris végétaux, fongiques, et bactériens. Certaines de ces inclusions et laforme en galet des morceaux d’ambre suggèrent un piégeage dans la résinepréférentiellement au niveau du sol.Les études sédimentologiques et taphonomiques indiquent un dépôt de l’ambre et desdébris végétaux en milieu lacustre, dans un bassin interne connecté épisodiquement àl’océan, et sous un paléoclimat chaud avec une saisonnalité marquée.

Abstract

In coastal areas and estuaries, such as those encountered in the western part of France (Brittany region), the recycling of carbon and nutrients from sediments can participate in the development of micro and macro-algal blooms with harmful consequences for these ecosystems. One of the main processes controlling this recycling is the microbial mineralization of sedimentary organic matter (SOM). Mineralization is controlled by the origin, quantity and accessibility of the SOM, three factors whose relative importance remain, however, poorly quantified, mainly due to the great diversity of OM sources in coastal areas. The first objective of the present work was to assess the variability of the SOM origin at the regional scale representative of the complexity of the sources likely to be involved. The second objective was to determine the link between the SOM origin and its biodegradability, and how the OM sources can drive nutrient dynamics at the sediment-water interface. To this end, a broad sediment sampling campaign was carried out on Brittany mudflats, particularly affected by the eutrophication, during the spring period. A total of 200 samples were collected at 45 sites. They were characterized by their porosity and grain-size, as well as their chemical composition through elemental, isotopic and molecular biomarker analysis. A wide range of OM sources were identified in the sediments, including both natural (bacteria, algae, macrophytes, terrestrial plants), and anthropogenic (combustion products, crude oil, petroleum products – e.g. from the processing of crude oil at refineries- and fecal matter) sources. Sediment slurry incubations were carried out to determine the spatial variability of potential mineralization rates under oxic conditions. In addition, the measurements of NH4+ and PO4 fluxes at the sediment-water interface were made from sediment core incubations under realistic redox conditions of sediment. The physical and chemical sedimentary characteristics explained 58 % of the variability of mineralization rates under oxic conditions, with a negligible independent effect of the SOM origin (3 %). Conversely, under insitu redox conditions, the prevalent role of SOM origin over quantity/accessibility on the sediment biodegradability was highlighted with a significant effect 5 and 1.5 fold higher on the PO4 and NH4+ fluxes respectively. The anthropogenic inputs from the watershed to the coastal sediment, through agricultural runoff and/or sewages discharge, seem to significantly drive the nutrient dynamics at the sediment-water interface. Higher values of NH4+ and PO4 fluxes were measured for the sediment with a chemical composition impacted by human activities.

Abstract

Rhopalosomatidae, currently considered the sister group of the Vespidae, are an enigmatic family of aculeate wasps that originated in the Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous. Despite their considerable age, very few fossils of the family have been reported – all of them in amber (Miocene Dominican, Miocene Mexican, and mid-Cretaceous Burmese ambers). Here we report a new mid-Cretaceous rhopalosomatid wasp, Cretolixon alatum Lohrmann, gen. et sp. nov., from Burmese (Kachin) amber. This new genus has a unique mixture of characters, some of which are only known from the recent brachypterous genus Olixon and others of which are known only from the recent macropterous genera. Thus, Cretolixon Lohrmann, gen. nov. not only provides further evidence for the monophyly of the family but also contributes evidence for the monophyly of the Rhopalosomatinae. Key characters of the family are discussed, and an updated checklist of the world genera and fossil species and occurrences of Rhopalosomatidae is provided. Additionally, a chemical analysis was performed for three of the newly reported fossils as well as for the amber piece containing the rhopalosomatid larva described by Lohrmann and Engel (2017) to ascertain their amber vs. copal nature and their affinities with each other and previously described Burmese amber.
