In this paper, which is a revised and modified version of the 2019 North American Society for the Sociology of Sport Alan Ingham Memorial lecture, the author shares four views, contributions, and opportunities that sports sociologists might consider useful in how to decolonize as well as indigenize our discipline together. The need to actively engage in the theory and practice of how to decolonize while understanding what it also means to work toward becoming an accomplice, activist, ally, or co-resistor are important threads underpinning the nature and scope of this paper. The author concludes with a plea to sports sociologists that decolonizing our minds is as much a collective effort as it is an act of reconciliation while maintaining the promise of inclusion, equity, and human rights. As sports sociologists, understanding what it means to be in "good relations" with Indigenous Peoples is fundamental to how we continue to build on and improve our discipline together. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the contributions of sport sociology to the marketing of sport and leisure organizations. In particular, the major steps that comprise the marketing enterprise are reviewed, from the identification of product marketing features to the monitoring of the marketing environment, and the potential contributions of sport sociology at each phase of the process are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to review and critique the major approaches to the analysis of participation in sport, and to present suggestions for new approaches offering more useful bases for the explanation and understanding of the participation phenomenon. Past research has focused on the characteristics and backgrounds of sport participants or on the process of socialization into sport roles. Employing the theoretical guidelines provided by Giddens, it is recommended that future research be based on a conceptualization of participation as a process by which men and women actively create their sporting lives within the constraints of particular social and political structures. This article focuses on papers presented at the first Olympic Academy. Papers were grouped under the following headings: Ancient Perspectives; Contemporary Perspectives; Feminine Perspectives; International Olympic Academy and the U.S. Olympic Committee; and Ceremonies of the First Session.

The article presents information related to research papers sports, published in different journals. "Performance productivity and quality of frontline employees in service organizations," by J. Singh adds to the discussion on the importance of frontline employees to the success of service organizations. The significant findings in this paper suggest that there is a distinction between productivity and quality, and when burnout increases, frontline employees tend to maintain their current productivity levels while quality declines. This paper was published in the Sociology of Sport Journal. The purpose of the research paper, "Sports marketing. Going for gold," by R. Gardyn, is to investigate the state of Olympic fandom and the various issues surrounding marketers' ability to make an impact with consumers during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. This article is published in the journal, American Demographics. The research paper by D. James, "The tipoff: How NBA can regain its game," published in the journal Marketing News, investigates the status of the National Basketball Association among fans and marketers. A number of factors are examined to shed some light on the apparent decrease in fan interest.

The relationship between sport and the modem state has been a focus of increased theoretical attention in recent years, particularly with respect to the role of sport in hegemony. At the same time there has been mounting interest in the significance of the body and bodily practices (including sports) as a site of political struggle. Yet, not much work has been done on the connection between these two projects. A monograph written in French and published in 1983 draws together many of these themes but has remained neglected in English-language sport sociology. The central question examined in this essay is whether there can be a distinctive feminist epistemology or theory of knowledge. If there can be, then what would it look like? The ensuing discussion focuses on why it is so important to comprehend this feminist challenge to the origin, nature, methods, and limits of knowledge that have shaped our understanding of social life and what implications this has for the social analysis of sport. The paper begins by noting that in order to answer our sociological questions about gender inequality in sport, it makes more sense lo view sex/gender as a system of social relations between females and males rather than treat them as dichotomous categories. Our questions therefore become relational rather than distributive. Four theoretical approaches to the sex/gender system (liberal, traditional Marxist, radical, and socialist) are outlined with particular attention being paid to the epistemological and methodological assumptions that stem from each variant. The notion of a standpoint, and in particular the standpoint of women, is introduced to show how it is possible for women to demystify their social reality and to begin the necessary reconstruction of the sportsworld so that women's interests are no longer subordinate to those of men. This paper seeks to analyze the contribution of sport to a common sense acceptance of the performance principle, and its associated discipline and accountability, as natural and indeed valuable features of social life. It will be our purpose, furthermore, to argue that a conceptual framework incorporating the ideas of "hegemony", "structure of feeling", and "dominant, residual, and emergent" cultures, offers significant analytical advantages over frameworks based on more straightforward notions of socialization and social control. Sport and communication have existed since humans began interacting with one another, with organized sport and planned communication formalized for hundreds of years. However, social science scholars have only taken a high-level of interest in sport communication over the past decade. Over the past 10 years, much has been written and researched in the field, and its formalization continues, justifying a need for a review of its current status and the articulation of its future directions. Thus, this article identifies and critically discusses the developments in the field of sport communication in terms of its academic infrastructures and the resulting body of knowledge. It also assesses how the field's developments are affecting scholarly advancements and identifies areas of "disciplinary pain." The work concludes by providing suggestions for future research. The present study involved three in-depth interviews with 10 informants who had voluntarily withdrawn from hockey, horse racing, football, and racquetball. The personal histories of the informants were examined for diversity and commonality of experience. A synthesized description of career change experience was written as a general story, identifying a sequence of experiential units that reflect the shifts in focus within the common experience. The general story indicated that withdrawal from sport was not simply an event but a process that began soon after the athletes became engaged in their career. This study supports and extends a model proposed by Schlossberg (1984) which attempts to account for diversity in the experience of transitions. The model is considered helpful in developing an understanding of the process of a transitional experience such as retirement from sport, considering the context in which the experience takes place, the meaning it has for the individual, and how it changes over time. The topic of risk is most often discussed in the literature on environmental, health, and technical hazards. More recently, however, it has become a topic of concern to social scientists who apply risk analysis to social relations and social structure. The concept of risk can be used in analyses of sport as a factor in analytical models and as a component of applied sport sociology. This article focuses on a cross-disciplinary analysis of the modern Olympic Games based on research in the social sciences and humanities. It includes original theoretical and empirical research on various aspects of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement. Issues and problems surrounding the Olympic Games have been investigated and a modernized social philosophical interpretation of the Games has been provided.

This article examines the organizational structure of sport programs in the Soviet Union. The following five aims of Soviet international sporting relations have been discussed: promotion of relations with pro-Soviet and potentially sympathetic groups abroad, promoting neighborly relations with border states, attaining world sporting supremacy, maintaining and reinforcing the unity of the socialist bloc, and winning support for Soviet policies among developing states in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

This article discusses the use of international competitive sport as a propaganda weapon. Incidents of disharmony during several past Olympics have been cited. It contends that international competitive sport has become an arena for ideologies mirroring the same tensions as are seen on the purely political plane.
