This study presents a land-use design model for transit-oriented development planning at the regional level. The proposed model allocates a city's residential, employment and recreational activities according to four objectives and six groups of constraints. In order to handle adequately the presence of uncertainty and the flexibility needed in practical planning, the inputs and outputs of the model can be grey numbers. To solve the proposed model and other grey multi-objective programming models, the Grey TOPSIS approach can be adopted. The model is applied to Taipei City. Recommendations are made regarding the case study and a sensitivity analysis informs policy formulation and parameters setting. Este estudio presenta un modelo de diseño de uso del suelo para la planificación de desarrollo regional orientado al tránsito de ámbito regional. El modelo propuesto asigna las actividades residenciales, laborales y de recreo de acuerdo con cuatro objetivos y seis grupos de restricciones. Para poder manejar adecuadamente la presencia de incertidumbre y la flexibilidad necesaria en la planificación práctica, los inputs y outputs del modelo pueden ser números grey. Para resolver el modelo propuesto y otros modelos de programación multiobjetivo grey, se puede adoptar el método Grey TOPSIS. El modelo se aplica para Taipei City. Approximately 40 years ago, I was fortunate enough to step into the field of diabetes. When I had my fellowship training in the USA, I learned how to ask a good scientific question and conduct clinical research. With collaboration with my mentors, Prof. Gerald R Reaven and Prof. Ida Chen, we participated in many clinical trials. We established the Taiwan Diabetes Registry (TDR) to track long‐term changes in diabetes profiles. The ultimate purpose of medical research is to provide benefits to patients. Using electronic medical records and point‐of‐care glucometers, we reduced inpatients' hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia greatly, which was also reflected by the reduction in hospital stays and readmission rates. With the advent of new technology and medications, we have to ponder where we are on the journey toward better diabetes care. We rigorously advocate diabetes care, hold many symposia and publish updated guidelines. We successfully hosted the congress of the 11th International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region & 8th Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes Scientific Meeting 2016 at Taipei, Taiwan. As the era of precision medicine is coming, Taiwan could be considered as one of the best places to run precision medicine. The Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative has enrolled more than half a million residents, and is currently conducting genotyping and data analysis. In conclusion. I witnessed the early days of simple and few choices for diabetes management to the current various modalities in diabetes care. As these new technologies have become available, patients will always remain at the center of the care model with warmth and humility. In this study, we propose a volume‐to‐point framework for quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) based on the Quantitative Precipitation Estimation and Segregation Using Multiple Sensor (QPESUMS) Mosaic Radar data set. With a data volume consisting of the time series of gridded radar reflectivities over the Taiwan area, we used machine learning algorithms to establish a statistical model for QPE in weather stations. The model extracts spatial and temporal features from the input data volume and then associates these features with the location‐specific precipitations. In contrast to QPE methods based on the Z–R relation, we leverage the machine learning algorithms to automatically detect the evolution and movement of weather systems and associate these patterns to a location with specific topographic attributes. Specifically, we evaluated this framework with the hourly precipitation data of 45 weather stations in Taipei during 2013–2016. In comparison to the operational QPE scheme used by the Central Weather Bureau, the volume‐to‐point framework performed comparably well in general cases and excelled in detecting heavy‐rainfall events. By using the current results as the reference benchmark, the proposed method can integrate the heterogeneous data sources and potentially improve the forecast in extreme precipitation scenarios. Plain Language Summary: Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is a method of approximating the amount of rain that has fallen at a location or across a region. In most use cases, weather service providers use radar signals to estimate the amount of precipitation through the formula describing the relationship between radar reflectivity and the size of raindrop particles, Z–R relation. The state‐of‐the‐art QPE methods with adjusted Z–R relation are robust and accurate in general. Yet, they consider only the radar signal at a given location, which represented a point‐to‐point framework. In this study, we proposed a volume‐to‐point alternative that estimates the amount of rain by considering the signals in a broader spatial region and a longer time‐span. By using a deep neural network to process the large data volume, we demonstrated that the proposed method performed comparably well in general cases and excelled in detecting heavy‐rainfall events. This method could improve advanced warning for flash flooding and make water resource management more effective. In ongoing research, we seek to extend our approach to integrate the heterogeneous data sources and to be applied to precipitation forecasting. This article focuses on the 1993 Far Eastern Meeting of the Econometric Society which will be held at Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan during June 25-27, 1993. The meeting will be organized in cooperation with the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica; the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research; and the Chinese Economic Association. The Co-Chairs of the Program Committee are T.S. Yu and Cheng Hsiao. Prospective contributors are requested to submit three copies of a one-page abstract as soon as possible. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is December 20, 1992. Three copies of the full manuscript should be submitted no later than February 20, 1993. Final decisions will be based on full manuscripts. This article presents information on the Second Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival, held in Taipei, Taiwan, from October 3-7, 2003. Each ethnographic film festival has its own special character and flavour, deriving as much from the location and time where it takes place as from how it is organized, the films that are shown and the people who attend. For the second Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival the weather was hot and clammy, the city of Taipei throbbing with life and air conditioners. Films from the four different sections were juxtaposed in the programme in a thought-provoking way, intriguingly bridging disparate times, places, peoples and events. Jean Rouch's classic film, "Moi un Noir," made in the 1950s, and then saw "Experimental Taiwanese," filmed half a century later by Wu Mi-Sen, a young Taiwanese filmmaker. Culture as persuasive performance was apparent in many films, particularly those falling under the migration theme.

The article announces the holding of the Far Eastern Meeting of the Econometric Society on June 25 to 27, 1993 at the Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. The meeting is organized in cooperation with the Institute of Economics the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research and the Chinese Economic Association. T.S. Yu and Cheng Hsiao were appointed as co-chairmen of the Program Committee. The availability of limited travel funds for those presenting papers is also announced.

The article discusses the first report of rust disease in Plumeria rubra, an ornamental tree, caused by Coleosporium plumeriae in Taipei, Taiwan. In December 2003, stages of a rust fungus were found on leaves of Plumeria rubra growing at the Taipei Botanical Garden. The rust generated orange to yellow sori in leaves, and, in severe infections, caused early leaf abscision. The morphology of the stages of the specimens seen on P. rubra is similar to previous descriptions of Coleosporium plumeriae.

Considerable change in the romantic and sexual behaviors of Asian young people may be occurring as traditionally Confucian societies modernize and increase outside contacts. This study explores the dimensions and context of this change in three sites at different stages in the process of modernization: Hanoi (early), Shanghai (intermediate), and Taipei (later stage). A survey was conducted of 17,016 males and females aged 15-24 in urban and rural settings in three large metropolitan areas. Survival analysis and Cox regressions were performed to explore ages of respondents at key transitions and the significance of differences between two age cohorts: 15-19 and 20-24. Significant differences are found in levels of sexual and other transitions, even within the narrow time span reflected by the age cohorts. The findings highlight the differential impact of modernization on adolescent sexual behavior as traditional societies undergo social change, and they underline the importance of context in exploring youthful transitions. ABSTRACT: This study compared consistency of age- and gender-specific self-reported height and weight and calculated body mass index among a sample of high school students in Taipei County, Taiwan to reference values for Taiwanese school-aged youth obtained through national studies. Taipei high school students provided self-reports of height and weight that were similar to national reference values. Use of self-reported height and weight in this sample appeared warranted and may reliably be used to calculate aggregate indices of body mass, overweight, and obesity. This study compared prevalence of overweight and obesity in the current sample with other adolescent populations using international criteria (International TaskForce on Obesity). Using these criteria, 17.6% of boys and 9.4% of girls met the definition of overweight and 3.7% of boys and 1.6% of girls met the definition of obesity. While use of self-reported height and weight appears justified in this sample, researchers should not assume self-report measures will always be accurate. Researchers considering use of self-reported height and weight should compare their results to normative reference values when possible to increase confidence in using self-report measures of height and weight. The article offers information on the "Fourth Biennial Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival" which was held from September 28-October 2, 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan. Indigenous films from the U.S., China, Nepal, Madagascar, and Taiwan were the main focus of the festival. The indigenous filmmakers Victor Masayesva of the Native American Hopi and Mayaw Biho of the Taiwanese tribe of Pangcah received special commendations and showed some of their work.
