The article presents information on the papers from the Second Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Symposium. The topic of the symposium was principles of programming languages. It was sponsored by ACM Special Interest Group on Automata and Computability Theory and ACM Special Interest Group on Programming Languages. The organizers of the symposium believed that this joint effort will result in to increased, productive understanding of many topics. The topics studied in the papers for the second symposium included topics like including: proving assertions about programs and data, optimization techniques, the computational complexity of testing grammars for certain key properties, automatic choice of data representations, exception handling, and various new approaches to programming language semantics. The program committee received 107 abstracts out of which 22 papers were selected for presentation. The papers represented almost all areas of current research. All papers were reviewed by referees in the normal fashion.

The article presents information on the professional activities of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Papers describing original research are sought for the Fifteenth ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, which is scheduled to be held from April 25, 1983 to April 27, 1983 in Boston, Massachusetts. Typical, but not exclusive, topics of interest include: algorithms and data structures; automata and formal languages; computability; complexity theory, etc. A call for participation has been issued for the Tenth Annual Conference of the ACM's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics, which is scheduled to be held from July 25, 1983 to July 29, 1983 in Detroit, Michigan. Submissions are invited for both technical program paper and panel sessions. Previously unpublished papers in all areas of computer graphics and interactive techniques are sought. Appropriate topics include display techniques; graphics software systems and languages; graphics hardware; robotics; and any applications of graphics. Video or film material that is an integral component of the work must accompany the paper.

With advances in base technologies for moving objects, many studies have been conducted on the construction of databases of the trajectories of moving objects, including the diverse applications related to the trajectories. Most previous studies deal with whole trajectory matching, which finds the trajectories T in the database similar to a given query trajectory Q 'as a whole.' However, we often want to find those T containing the sub-trajectories T sub (⊆ T) that are similar to Q. This problem is known as sub-trajectory matching and is more complicated than whole trajectory matching since the query trajectory Q can be of any length and the matching sub-trajectories T sub can be at any position in the data trajectories T. In this paper, we present a novel indexing-based sub-trajectory matching algorithm using multi-segment approximation. Our algorithm partitions a data trajectory into multiple component segments and then stores the individual segments in an index. The query trajectory is also partitioned into its component segments, and the search for similar segments for each query segment is efficiently performed using the index. The sub-trajectories similar to the query trajectory are reconstructed by our 'stitching' algorithm using the individual segments retrieved from the index. Our stitching algorithm is novel and innovative in the sense that it facilitates segment-wise partitioning and indexing of data trajectories. Without stitching, only trajectory-wise operations would be affordable, which causes severe storage space overhead and degradation in search performance. Our study is the first that uses indexing in sub-trajectory matching. We define a (multi-segment) trajectory similarity measure that extends a widely used single-segment similarity measure proposed by Lee et al. (in: Proceedings of ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data (SIGMOD), 2007; in: Proceedings of IEEE international conference on data engineering (ICDE), 2008; Proc VLDB Endow (PVLDB) 1(1):1081–1094, 2008) by using the Hausdorff distance. We perform extensive experiments to compare our method with EDS (Xie, in: Proceedings of ACM SIGMOD international conference on management of data (SIGMOD), 2014), which has been proved to outperform all representative point-based measures in terms of accuracy and performance. The accuracy of our similarity measure is better than EDS by up to 52.0%, and our algorithm significantly outperforms that using EDS by up to 22,543 times. The performance of our algorithm is linearly scalable in the size of the database, which is an essential property for handling large-scale databases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONFERENCES & conventions , *PERIODICALS , *DIGITAL libraries , *COMPUTER systems , *INFORMATION resources management - Abstract
The article presents information on the advantages of using services provided by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM, IEEE/CS, and USENIX organize conferences and sponsor journals and magazines. ACM shoulders the responsibility for the financial health of a conference, maintains the history of financial transactions, signs contracts with vendors, prints and produces promotional materials, and so forth. The cost of such services is built into the conference budget as administrative fees. This is basically overhead for ACM to pay staff to support conferences. Unlike university-based overheads, which are typically fixed at about 50%, ACM's overhead is based on a sliding scale depending on the size of the conference, but it is closer to 15%. ACM publishes nearly 40 periodicals in addition to sponsoring 140 conferences and workshops each year. Another benefit of ACM sponsorship is that all conference and periodical papers are available via ACM's Digital Library. The DL is one of ACM's crown jewels, and is unquestionably popular and affordable to both individuals and institutions.

The article focuses on the 29th annual meeting of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The ACM 74, to be held at the San Diego Convention Center, in November 1974, promises to be one of the most accommodating and exciting conferences ever held. The technical program chairman, David Bulman has designed the program to inform through controversy as well as exposition. ACM 74 will be a particularly well-balanced conference with virtually each special interest group (SIG) sponsoring one or more technical sessions. However, unlike previous ACM conferences, this one has more sessions provided through the SIG for Business Data Processing. The ACM SIG for Computers and the Physically Handicapped will underline the role of the computer in medicine with papers on "Modes of Information Presentation for the Blind Programmer," and "Computer Applications in Artificial Limb Research." For the fifth year, ACM will host the annual U.S. Computer Chess Championship Tournament in which computer programs meet in open competition.

This article reports on the proceedings of an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)'s SIGFIDET Workshop on Data Description, Access and Control which was convened in Ann Arbor, Michigan, during May 1-3, 1974. The convention featured a debate on the differences and similarities between the data structure set model and the relational model for data management systems. Educators C. W. Bachman and E. F. Codd were the two principals in the debate who were joined by E. Sibley and J. Lucking, on the one side, and V. K. Whitney and D. Tsichritzis, on the other. The moderator was R. Rustin. The discussion ranged over most of the relevant issues and topics, except possibly one posed by the moderator beforehand, that is, "Do databases eat their young?" Bachman took the position that the two points of view are perhaps two sides of the same coin, and that which is more natural depends on stylistic preferences. Other sessions on several related subjects featured contributed papers.

This article presents biographies and statements of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) candidates for Central Region Representative. Lee J.White has been a full member of ACM since 1969. White is a author of over 50 refereed technical papers. White suggests the increased scheduling of joint conferences, symposia and workshops in ACM. This will allow the travel dollar of members to go further, attending several collocated events of interest. David S.Wise attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (B.S. 1967) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S. 1969 and Ph.D. 1971). Within ACM Professor Wise is a member of Special Interest Group (SIG) Board, Publications Board, the Executive Committee of USACM. According to Wise, ACM must lead in launching on-line products, while still sustaining the respect that the ACM imprimatur has earned. As a federation of semi-autonomous local chapters and SIGs, whose liveliness stems from localized management, ACM must shape its global future from local spirit.
