- Abstract
Introduction: The article presents the results of a study on scientific collaboration between Spanish universities and private enterprise, measured in terms of the co-authorship of papers published in international journals. Method: Bibliometric analysis of papers published in journals listed in Scopus in 2003-2011. Indicators were calculated for output, collaboration, standardised impact and publication in highly reputed journals. Analysis: A number of dimensions were explored: (1) publication patterns among domestic companies; (2) subject matter distribution and impact of the papers published; (3) university-company partnering based on papers co-authored by university and private sector researchers; and (4) regional differences. Results: The three fields where production was most intense were biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, engineering and medicine. Research in collaboration with companies had a lower normalised impact than research conducted by universities alone. The highest volumes of private sector collaboration with Spanish universities were recorded for pharmaceutical companies. Conclusions: Companies' output was observed to decline across the period studied and their academic articles appeared to be less visible than the papers published by other institutions.

- Abstract
Overviews synthesising the results of multiple systematic reviews help inform evidence-based clinical practice. In this first of two companion papers, we evaluate the bibliometrics of overviews, including their prevalence and factors affecting citation rates and journal impact factor (JIF). We searched MEDLINE, Epistemonikos and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR). We included overviews that: (1) synthesised reviews; (2) conducted a systematic search; (3) had a methods section; and (4) examined a healthcare intervention. Multivariable regression was conducted to determine the association between citation density, JIF and six predictor variables. We found 1218 overviews published from 2000 to 2020; the majority (73%) were published in the most recent 5-year period. We extracted a selection of these overviews (n = 541; 44%) dated from 2000 to 2018. The 541 overviews were published in 307 journals; "CDSR" (8%), "PLOS ONE" (3%) and "Sao Paulo Medical Journal" (2%) were the most prevalent. The majority (70%) were published in journals with impact factors between 0.05 and 3.97. We found a mean citation count of 10 overviews per year, published in journals with a mean JIF of 4.4. In multivariable analysis, overviews with a high number of citations and JIFs had more authors, larger sample sizes, were open access and reported the funding source. An eightfold increase in the number of overviews was found between 2009 and 2020. We identified 332 overviews published in 2020, which is equivalent to one overview published per day. Overviews perform above average for the journals in which they publish.

In the space of four years, from 1826 to 1829, the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal published three anonymous articles seemingly advocating doctrines inspired by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Decades of scholarship have initially attributed the most outspoken of the three articles, the 1826 “Observations on the Nature and Importance of Geology,” to Robert Grant, and subsequently to Robert Jameson, thanks to a critical reassessment by James Secord (1991). More recently, scholars have also ascribed to Jameson an article published in 1829, “Of the Continuity of the Animal Kingdom by Means of Generation from the First Ages of the World to the Present Times.” A third short contribution, the 1827 “Of the Changes which Life has Experienced on the Globe” has been credited to the Franco-German Ami Boué. Research undertaken over several years has led to the identification of the three authors hiding behind the veil of anonymity. They were not the ones scholars have agreed upon, nor were they really “Lamarckians.” The discussion of the ways in which the three texts reached Edinburgh broadens our understanding of the daily working practices of contemporary periodicals and of the networks of circulation of texts at the Continental level. Finally, when considered within their proper conceptual and social context, the three articles throw light on the many ways in which, during the 1820s, European amateurs, naturalists, and journalists debated the succession of life forms throughout the history of the Earth.

- Abstract
The shortfall of young people, particularly women, in the field of Science, Mathematics and Engineering (SME) has been shown in many national studies. Schreiner and Sjoberg (2007) indicated that boys outnumber girls in physics and engineering studies, while the gender balance is shifted towards the girls in studies including medicine, veterinary medicine, environmental science and biology. This paper sets out to explore the issues, which are relevant to understanding these gender differences and the factors affecting students' career choices. The instrument called "Vilje-con-valg" was used to obtain data from 1635 first year students from eight different departments--mechanical, civil, computer, electrical-electronics, industrial, chemical, environmental and food engineering at 21 universities in Turkey. The results of this study showed that (i) most of the students decided on career options during their last grade level in high school or after graduation from high school, (ii) students were influenced by the jobs that they were interested in; their talents and abilities that they wanted to use and job prospects after graduation, (iii) internet, popular scientific magazines, books and movies were important factors in choosing their careers and (iv) the creativity and independence in the jobs are important considerations that influence career decisions. Potreban je kvalitetniji pristup pisanju medicinskih izvornih radova kao bi se održala i poboljšala znanstvena izvrsnost i kvaliteta hrvatskih medicinskih časopisa, a sve to evaluirati i pratiti sličnim znanstvenim radovima., Original scientific article presents a written review of original research results, which are supported by clear and statistically reliable data. The main aim of this study was critical analysis of quality in writing original research articles published in medical journals Liječnički vjesnik and Acta Medica Croatica in the five-year period (from 2009 to 2013 year). A total of 112 articles was procesed in which 56 of them were in Acta Medica Croatica and 56 in Liječnički vjesnik. Our findings showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the original papers published in Acta Medica Croatica and Liječnički Vjesnik in intelligibility and definition of the aim (λ2 = 1.104, df = 2, p = 0.576), no statistically difference in results in a user-friendly and appropriate answers to the aim of the paper (λ2 = 0.279, df = 2, p = 0.870) and no statistically diference in the conclusions of the appropriate results (λ2 = 1.958, df = 2, p = 0.376). Therefore, the present study suggests that we require more quality access in writing medical original papers in order to maintain and enhance scientific excellence and quality of Croatian medical journals. As well it is necessary to evaluate whole proces and monitor with similar scientific papers.

Certain rules on how to write original (scientific) papers are pointed out The structure of all mandatory sections of the paper (i.e. introduction material and methods, results and discussion), representing the IMRAD layout is described in detail. Apart from the general rules concerning the preparation of these sections, the importance of following precisely the instructions to authors published by journals is also emphasized. It is important to publish results of scientific research for many reasons. Some of the reasons are (1): Giving credibility to the research, informing a broad audience of the achieved scientific results, adding credibility to one's own reputation, improving chances for personal promotion, etc. After all, if scientific results were not published and available to a wide scientific audience, it would be as if they had never existed. Today, it is regarded that original (scientific) papers are the only acceptable way of publishing scientific results. A scientific paper is a written and published report describing original research results (2). However, this definition is quite short and should be supplemented by the fact that it has to be the first announcement of scientific results, capable of being repeated. It should also be noted that it has to be written in a certain way and validly published, i.e. in a primary journal having a respectable peer-reviewing process or other primary publication, which means that it will be accessible to a broad scientific audience. Scientific papers generally follow the IMRAD layout - the acronym that stands for four basic sections of the paper Introduction (What question was asked?), Material and method (How was it studied?), Results (What was found?) and Discussion (What do the findings mean?). The aim of this paper is to emphasize essential points of these basic sections.

10. Sex Stereotyping in Drug Advertisements: Evaluation of the Informal Curriculum.
- Author

Wolfe, Mary L.
- Abstract
A study to determine sex stereotyping in drug advertisements in five professional journals is reported. The first four studies examined advertisements from general medical journals; the fifth study obtained its data from a psychiatric journal. The journals are "Medical Economics,""American Family Physician,""Modern Medicine,""Journal of the American Medical Association," and the "Journal of Psychiatry." Research focused on relationships among the gender of the models, the type of drug advertised, and the kinds of activities engaged in by models. Results indicate that in spite of a decade of rapid social change, an important segment of the advertising industry persists in perpetuating outmoded stereotypes. The most persistent were advertisements depicting men as productive and active professionally and women as passive, sexual, domestic, and preoccupied with personal concerns. Of 77 models appearing as health professionals 62 were physicians, all male, and 15 were nurses, all female. A tendency was noted to overportray women in advertisements for psychotropic drugs and men in advertisements for hypertensive drugs. This tendency reinforces the notion that women's illnesses are largely emotional in origin while those of men are organic or due to work pressures. These implications are significant in that drug advertising is an informal but influential part of the continuing education of health professionals, and biased advertisements could possibly cause different behavior toward males and females. 17. New Ratings of Humanities Journals Do More than Rank--They Rankle
- Author
-
Howard, Jennifer
- Abstract
This paper reports that a large-scale, multinational attempt in Europe to rank humanities journals has set off a revolt. In a protest letter, some journal editors have called it "a dangerous and misguided exercise." The project has also started a drumbeat of alarm in this country, as U.S.-based scholars begin to grasp the implications for their own work and the journals they edit. The ranking project, known as the European Reference Index for the Humanities, or ERIH, is the brainchild of the European Science Foundation, which brings together research agencies from many countries. It grew from a desire to showcase high-quality research in Europe. Panels of four to six scholars, appointed by a steering committee, compiled initial lists of journals to be classified in 15 fields. Each journal was assigned to a category--A, B, or C--depending on its reputation and international reach. The denunciation of the project as dangerous appears in an open letter signed by more than 60 editors of journals devoted to the history of science, technology, and medicine. They also ask to have their journals removed from the rankings. The letter will be published in the first 2009 issues of those journals, which include "Centaurus, Perspectives on Science, Isis, Annals of Science," and "the British Journal for the History of Science".

The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and influence of predatory journals in the field of dermatology in Austria. A total of 286 physicians (50.5% men) completed a questionnaire. The vast majority of subjects read scientific articles (n = 281, 98.3%) and took them into consideration in their clinical decisionmaking (n = 271, 98.5% of participants that regularly read scientific literature). Open access was known by 161 (56.3%), predatory journals by 84 (29.4%), and the Beall's list by 19 physicians (6.7%). A total of 117 participants (40.9%) had been challenged by patients with results from the scientific literature, including 9 predatory papers. Participants who knew of predatory journals had a higher level of education as well as scientific experience, and were more familiar with the open-access system (p < 0.001). These results indicate that the majority of dermatologists are not familiar with predatory journals. This is particularly the case for physicians in training and in the early stages of their career. The paper is concerned with circulation of biopower in a printed media discourse; it is based on a study, which theoretically builts on Michel Foucault's approach to power as an omnipresent, polymorph and dynamic relation between energies, on a notion of socially constructive character of media representation and on an idea of human bodily existence not only as an individual, biological, but also as social and political phenomenon. Through the use of discourse analysis of four lifestyle periodicals' articles covering corporeality, the paper investigates displays of biopower -- a power over life and body -- within the involved discourse strategies of media representation of corporeality. Research findings depict media as a disciplinary apparatus of society, quasi particular kind of disciplinary institution touching the domain of corporeality. Textually constructed lifestyle magazines consumers' activity -- self-discipline and truth-telling, leading to normalization of their corporeality and satisfying disciplinary power, turns out to be the key process in the course of performing biopower. The study also confirms a strong position of expert knowledge, or interconnection of media and biomedicine discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Latin America generates a low proportion of the references quoted in Medline, the most popular health-related literature search database in the world. This paper explores references from and about Colombia in Medline during the period 1987–1996. Topics addressed, patterns of authorship and research locations are established. The number of Latin American journals indexed in Medline has been progressively reduced during this 10-year period, with Colombian journals completely excluded since 1991. During this 10-year period, the total output of Colombian research institutions in foreign journals consisted of 531 articles, 41% (219) of which come from the four leading universities. These figures are substantially lower than those from other countries of the region such as Venezuela or Chile. Despite some governmental efforts, Colombia continues to have a low scientific output and has yet to attract the interest of foreign researchers. Alternatives for development of Latin American research and publications are offered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN artificial insemination ,PERIODICALS ,PHYSICIANS ,REPRODUCTIVE technology - Abstract
Artificial insemination has been widely practiced for the past 60 years. Medical researchers have established the significant frequency of artificial insemination, estimating that by 1990 250,000 US citizens were the products of artificial insemination. Over 30,000 individuals are born each year as the result of donated sperm (Seibel, Crockin, 1996). It can be assumed that the majority of adult Americans are now aware of artificial insemination rudimentaries; for, when it is discussed in contemporary magazines, newspapers, and other public news forums, the ?basics? of artificial insemination are never mentioned. Media sources instead discuss topics related to artificial insemination: recent medical breakthroughs, its costs, and other related information. Whenever magazines reference artificial insemination related topics, the magazines concurrently portray specific populations as valid artificial insemination users. By leaving potentially-associated consumers out of the theoretical frame, magazines can show a group?s lack of validity, or their perceived insignificance. Indeed, some consumers may be ?beyond the pale? to periodicals? unrecognizable as artificial insemination users. While it is possible that all genres of print media (i.e., magazines aimed at females, homosexuals, or African-Americans) could identically frame artificial insemination consumers, I argue that distinct types of magazines call forth different types of artificial insemination populations. In this paper I contend that the imagined consumer of artificial insemination varies by magazine genre. That is, the separate magazines that I examined discussed artificial insemination as appropriate for only particular types of users. I believe that the type of discussion invoked indicates the limits of each periodical?s worldview. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper places 'Islam and bioethics' within the framework of 'religion and science' discourse. It thus may be seen as a complement to the paper by Henk ten Have () with which this thematic section in Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science opens, which places 'Islam and bioethics' in the context of contemporary bioethics. It turns out that in Zygon there have been more submitted articles on Islam and bioethics than on any other Islam-related topic. This may be a consequence of the global nature of the bioethical issues, driven by advancement in science and technology, which allows for conversation across cultural and religious boundaries even when the normative references and argumentative methods are tradition-specific. TELEMEDICINE ,PERIODICALS ,MEDICINE - Abstract
We searched the MEDLINE database for publications about telemedicine from 1966 to 2003. Only publications with a first institutional address in Spain and from journals listed in the JCR Science Edition 2002 were included in the study. A total of 118 publications were found. The first publication appeared in 1988 and publication output showed a sudden increase starting in 1995, reaching a maximum in 2002 with 21 publications. The number of authors per publication in non-multicentre studies ranged from 1 to 14 (median 6.5). Most authors (79%) contributed to only a single publication; 10% of authors participated in three or more publications. Most publications were full papers (88%). The most active Autonomous Community in the number of publications relative to inhabitants was Galicia (0.91 publications per 100,000 inhabitants). The Community that produced the highest absolute number of publications was Madrid (29% of the total). The mean impact factor of the journals in which the publications appeared was 0.961. Production of telemedicine publications in Spain has followed the same temporal course as has been observed worldwide. There is an unequal geographical and institutional distribution of publications. The highest production is concentrated in a few institutions and only a small number of authors show steady research activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DENTAL research ,DENTAL extraction ,DATABASES ,PERIODICALS ,MEDICINE - Abstract
Data sourcesJournal selection was from the 2003 Journal Citation Reports Science Edition (for dental journals) and the 2005 Journal Citation Reports Science and Social Science Edition (for the non-dental journals). The database searched was the Ovid version of Medline.Study selectionStudies had to be in English, with a predominantly qualitative approach, published between 1999 and 2004 (for dental journals) and between 2002 and 2006 (for non-dental journals)Data extraction and synthesisArticles were screened by a research team experienced in sociology, psychology and oral health qualitative research. Two researchers independently appraised each paper and reached consensus, involving a third researcher to resolve disagreements where necessary. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) appraisal framework for qualitative research was used to assess the quality of the papers and this was one of the outcomes. The main outcome was the percentage of the CASP criteria which were fully met for each study, and these were then grouped under journal impact factor range.ResultsForty-three qualitative research papers were appraised. Twenty-five were in dental journals and 18 in non-dental journals. There was a gradient in the number of studies published according to the journal impact factor, with the highest impact factor journals publishing the least qualitative research. There was a general lack of detail in reporting within the papers, with 35% of the studies providing little or no details about the analysis process, such as the stages involved or derivation of themes. Methodological rigour was considered deficient in many of the studies and in a number of areas: eg data saturation was mentioned in only 25% of studies; how contradictory data were managed was discussed in 25%; and a third of the studies gave little justification for the methods chosen.ConclusionsThe quality of much of the published qualitative dental research is mediocre when assessed using the CASP framework, and several specific areas have been identified for targeting improvement, including better methodological rigour and increased detail in reporting.
