The Glasgow Observer newspaper, founded in 1885 by and for the Irish community in Scotland regularly published both lengthy and brief funereal and elegiac obituaries of the Irish in Scotland in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They marshal an impressive, emotive and oftentimes contradictory body of evidence and anecdote of immigrant lives of the kind utilised, and as often passed over, by historians of the Irish in Britain. They contain, however, a unique perspective on the march of a migrant people bespoke of their experiences and, perhaps more importantly, the perception of their experiences in passage, in the host society and ultimately in death. Moreover, the changing sense of Victorian sensibilities over the solemnity, purpose and ritual of death into the Edwardian era finds a moot reflection in the key staples of Irish immigrant obsequies with their stress on thrift, endeavour, piety, charity and gratitude. This article explores Glasgow Observer obituaries from the 1880s to the 1920s to see what they say about the immigrants, their lives, work and culture, the Scots, migration itself, the wider relations between Britain and Ireland, and the place where Irish and British attitudes to death meet in this period. David Arnold has drawn attention to the ways in which accounts of European death in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century India, and of what he terms 'deathscapes', were put to rhetorical use in narrating, justifying and consecrating the colonial enterprise in the sub-continent. This essay examines a contemporaneous version of the colonial deathscape: the vogue in Calcutta for the collection and circulation of epitaphs and obituaries to European 'departed worth', culminating in 1848 in the publication of the Bengal Obituary, a volume its most recent editor, P. Thankappan Nair, dubbed 'the greatest storehouse of epitaphs and monumental inscriptions ... ever published in Bengal, if not in India' (P. Thankappan Nair, ed., The Bengal Obituary (Calcutta: Punthi Pustak, 1991), p. xxxvii). I argue that while the framework and idiom of the Obituary supports what Arnold calls the 'sentimental annexation of India', its local genealogy and format resist either a purely ideological or a straightforwardly sentimental interpretation. The Bengal Obituary, I suggest, offers itself to more localized, ambivalent and contingent ways of reading, proper to the dialogic relationship between colony and metropole, and to European Calcutta's fragile but emergent civic self-image. This paper honors E. Scott Maynes, who died on June 24, 2007 and had been a professor emeritus in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University. The paper describes Scott's scholarly legacy in research, highlighting four areas: survey research methods, research using data from Surveys of Consumer Finances, Scott's studies of local consumer markets, and two significant books Scott Maynes authored. The author of this memorial paper concludes that Scott's scholarly legacy is neither a new theory nor a new statistical technique but the importance of vision, passion, perseverance, commitment, and creativity for the applied social science researcher. The leaders of the new English convents founded in exile in the seventeenth century faced particular challenges. With limited resources they sought to establish high standards in their convents. Key to encouraging new members to aspire to devotion, discipline and fulfilling the rules and constitutions of the founders was the communal reading of texts of exemplary lives. Senior members of the convents displayed keen awareness of the kinds of texts most appropriate. In addition to external exemplars, obituaries recording the religious qualities of the newly deceased members and, where appropriate, praising their contributions to the life of the convent exist from the start. This article explores strategies for reading 'obits' from two orders of nuns (Benedictines and Poor Clares) in order to understand daily life for English women religious in the seventeenth century. Douglas Argyll Robertson (1837–1909) was the first surgeon in Scotland to practice entirely in the field of ophthalmology. He completed his medical education under von Arlt in Prague and Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin. He made major contributions to ophthalmic surgery. He described that in cases of spinal cord disease there may be loss of the pupil light reflex but retention of the response to accommodation. This condition was named the “Argyll Robertson pupil” which has become one of the best known physical signs in Neurology. Argyll Robertson can be credited with a large number of other original observations in neuro-ophthalmology and he made a particular contribution to the management of glaucoma both from the discovery of the action of physostigmine (extract of the Calabar bean) and as the first to recommend trephining the sclera in those cases of glaucoma where extensive degenerative changes in the iris made an iridectomy impracticable. Less widely known was the importance of his father (John Argyll Robertson) as a likely influence on his choice of career. The article traces the development of the field of study dedicated to naturalist Charles Darwin known as Darwin studies. Following Darwin's death in 1882, a wealth of information in the form of obituaries and biographies began to be published. The author discusses how, over the course of time, Darwin's notes, letters and other unpublished material began to be published and studied. This study examines online obituary pages at nine major U.S. daily newspapers seeking to understand how these sites use new technologies, and how they publicly portray people's lives and deaths. These mainstream dailies provide a forum, and potentially large audiences, for mourners who send messages to the dead, express emotion, and tell stories. They also facilitate connections between readers and build new kinds of virtual communities. This represents a departure from traditional obituary content. Indeed, the "cyber obit" now allows the bereaved to help frame the death stories and build the memorials, liberated from the linear, non-interactive formats of the past. Popularly considered a great equalizer, death and the rituals around it nevertheless accentuate social distinctions. The present study focuses on a sample (N = 2554) of death announcements in a major Turkish daily newspaper (Hürriyet) from 1970 to 2006. Out of the liminal position of Turkish death announcements between obituaries and death notices emerges a large decentralized collection of private decisions responding to death, reflecting attitudes toward gender, ethnic/religious minority status and cultural capital, and echoing the aggregate efforts of privileged groups to maintain a particular self-image. Class closures lead to openings for traditionally under-represented minorities, such as Jewish Turkish citizens and citizens of Greek or Armenian origin. Results reveal that signs of status and power in announcements are largely monopolized by men of Turkish-Muslim origins. Although the changes in the genre-characteristics of death announcements are slow, they correspond to major turning points in Turkish social history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Konrad B. J. Zembrzuski was born on March 3, 1915, in Serock and he died on March 16, 1986, in Warsaw. He completed the Piotr Skarga High School in Pułtusk on May 13, 1933. He began his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw in 1934 as a former student of the Sanitary Military College. When World War II broke out in 1939, he had completed his education at the University, but he had not received a physician's diploma. He participated in The Polish Defensive War of 1939. He was arrested in October 1942 in connection with the disclosure of the scout conspiracy and was imprisoned in Pawiak Prison and, following the investigation, he was sent to German concentration camps in Majdanek, Płaszów, Gross-Rosen and Lutomierzyce. He suffered from typhus in the last one. After the liberation of that camp by Soviet soldiers, Zembrzuski returned to Poland. He received a physician's diploma on August 11, 1945 from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw. On September 1, 1945 he was appointed commissioner-doctor for infectious diseases in the District of Mazury and epidemiologist in the Olsztyn Branch of the National Institute of Hygiene. On May 31, 1953 he moved to the Ministry of Health in Warsaw. From February 1, 1955 he worked as lecturer in the National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw. He specialized in epidemiology and was conferred the degree of Doctor of Medical Science on December 20, 1960. He was one of the organizers of scouting in Olsztyn. He published more than 70 papers about zoonoses and parasitoses (particularly taeniasis). Having retired from his medical career, he remained active in scouting. This article explores the emergence of the obituary in British eighteenth-century print journalism, at a moment when the verse epitaph was in irrevocable decline. The new form of death memorial that the obituary represents reflected a changing attitude to death, and a new phase in its relationship with fame. Many of the features of the present-day phenomenon of celebrity can be identified as emerging in the eighteenth century, and we recognize all too well today the explosion of commerce and the new forms of deregulated media that produced this phenomenon. Death became 'news' in the context of the new transience and mobility of printed text, and the dead gained renown not only for historically momentous acts, or lasting works of art or intellect, but also for ephemeral skills and talents such as acting, singing, sports and eccentric feats of memory or agility. Celebrity - short-lived fame - became a feature of British society, and the untimely or dramatic death began to create as well as test this new kind of fame. The obituary plays a key role in this process, this article argues, and represents an important mechanism for introducing modern notions of fame and celebrity into British society. This article analyses the obituaries of 100 academics published in the British quality press in 2007 to see what they tell us about the changing nature of contemporary academic work, and how it is presented in this particular genre of writing. It concludes that the influence of Oxbridge and the American higher education system, and the dominance of men, remain strong in the senior levels of academic life that make it into the obituary pages. The obituaries also illustrate the impact of global events and trends, such as world war and the international mobility of highly skilled labour, on academe. An essay is presented on the effect of images of dead people to the viewer, and the appropriate way to view said images. An overview is given of the 2005 bombing incident that killed 56 people in London, England and which influenced the author to write this essay. The scope of the press coverage and photographs of the results of the attack including the victims and the perpetrators, and the contents of the victims' obituaries are discussed. Likewise presented are the books of notable writers, and an analysis of what photographs represent to people.

This article analyses the expressions that indicates death in Tuhfa-i Hattateen, the bibliographic work by Mustakimzade Suleiman Sadeddeen Efendi. The book introduces approximately 2200 Turkish, Persian and Arab calligraphers and gives their death with different impressions that changes according to their temperament, fame, and the way or date of death. Sometimes the date of death is explained by enumeration in these expressions: and the use of the words "he/she died" is carefully avoided. Paul S. Minear was one of the pre-eminent American biblical scholars of the 20th century. He died just after his 101st birthday in February 2007. Minear retired as a professor in 1971 from Yale University Divinity School. He was a prolific author and a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches; President of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (1964-65); President of The American Theological Society (1965-66); and member of the committee that produced the New Revised Standard Version (1967-88). The article discusses the death of journalist Ridkard Kapuscinski in Ecuador. The author presents several interviews with students of the former journalist, including the Peruvian writer Julio Villanueva Chang who was a former pupil of Kapuscinski. Born into a poor Polish family in the 1930s, Kapuscinski had a passion for reporting on the common, marginalised peoples. In his eyes, journalism was not just a profession but rather a social mission. He states that working under the socialist regime in Poland was difficult due to the various measures imposed by the government to censure journalists.

Witness-participant in revolutionary struggles in France, Spain, Germany, and Russia, Victor Serge (b. Kibaltchich, 1890) was an anti-Stalinist writer who died in obscurity in Mexico in 1947. His memoirs and political works are frequently cited, and his seven splendid novels have been rediscovered by succeeding generations. Yet he remains marginalized, even in leftist academia. I describe an assignment for personality psychology or introduction to psychology classes in which students used the Five Factor Model of personality to analyze the personality of entertainer Johnny Carson through his The New York Times obituary. Students evaluated this assignment highly: A majority indicated that the assignment was interesting, enjoyable, and useful in helping them to understand and apply the Five Factor Model, and all agreed that the assignment was thought-provoking.
