The arrest of activist Josef Cardinal Mindszenty starts round three of the political battle between church and state in post-war Hungary. In round one, which took place in 1945 immediately after the war, the long-overdue Hungarian land reform was fought tooth and nail by the Catholic church under the leadership of Cardinal Mindszenty. In round two, which was fought in the summer of 1948, the issue was the control of Hungary's public schools. The Cardinal lost that round on June 15, when the Hungarian Parliament decreed that all non-state schools, student homes and nurseries, with the exception only of schools specifically dedicated to religious instruction, theological seminaries and certain institutions of the Protestant Diacenese, would be taken over by the state.

In all the churches of the Western World, what used to be called the Christian Social Movement, has now come to a dead end, and its leaders, themselves announcing and lamenting this fact, are casting round to find the way out of it. They would not do this if they did not believe that there was such a way, or, conversely, if they thought that their work was finished and done.
