Background: As the global community begins recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges due to its aftermath remain. This health crisis has highlighted challenges associated with airborne pathogens and their capacity for rapid transmission. While many solutions have emerged to tackle this challenge, very few devices exist that are inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and versatile enough for various settings. Methods: This paper presents a novel suction device designed to counteract the spread of aerosols and droplets and be cost-effective and adaptable to diverse environments. We also conducted an experimental study to evaluate the device's effectiveness using an artificial cough generator, a particle counter, and a mannequin in an isolated system. We measured droplet removal rates with simulated single and repeated cough incidents. Also, measurements were taken at four distinct areas to compare its effectiveness on direct plume versus indirect particle removal. Results: The device reduced airborne disease transmission risk, as evidenced by its capacity to decrease the half-life of aerosol volume from 23.6 minutes to 15.6 minutes, effectively capturing aerosol-sized droplets known for their extended airborne persistence. The suction device lessened the peak total droplet volume from peak counts. At 22 minutes post peak droplet count, the count had dropped 24% without the suction device and 43% with the suction device. Conclusions: The experiment's findings confirm the suction device's capability to effectively remove droplets from the environment, making it a vital tool in enhancing indoor air quality. Given the sustained performance of the suction device irrespective of single or multiple cough events, this demonstrates its potential utility in reducing the risk of airborne disease transmission. 3D printing for fabrication opens the possibility of a rapid iterative design process, flexibility for different configurations, and rapid global deployment for future pandemics. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing indoor air quality has emerged as a crucial measure for preventing infections. Effective ventilation is vital in mitigating airborne pathogen transmission and maintaining a healthy indoor environment by diluting and removing infectious particles from enclosed spaces. However, increasing the supply of pathogen-free air to enhance infection control can lead to a rise in energy consumption. Nevertheless, evaluating the overall efficacy of ventilation-based infection prevention strategies while considering their energy requirements has posed challenges. This scientific paper introduces the ICEE (Infection Control's Energy Efficiency) index, a newly developed simple integrated index to assess the effectiveness of ventilation strategies in reducing infection risks while accounting for associated energy demands. The paper reviews the current understanding of ventilation strategies, their impact on infection prevention, and their corresponding energy consumption. By employing a straightforward analytical approach, this metric offers a comprehensive framework to optimize ventilation systems for both infection prevention and energy efficiency. To quantify infection risk, a simplified equation model is utilized, incorporating factors such as ventilation effectiveness and filter efficiency, in case of recirculation. Energy demand is determined using approximations and relevant values from existing literature. Reference cases are defined, distinguishing between natural and mechanically ventilated scenarios, as these reference situations influence the energy-related effects of any implemented measures. The paper outlines the methodology employed to develop the index and illustrates its applicability through exemplary measures. Air conditioning systems can play a positive or negative role in the spread of COVID-19 infection. The importance of sufficient outdoor air changes in buildings was highlighted by the World Health Organization, therefore these should be guaranteed by mechanical ventilation systems or adequate air conditioning systems. The proposed case study concerns the optimal number of outdoor air changes to limit COVID-19 contagion for a school building in Central Italy. The Wells–Riley model is used to assess the risk of airborne infection, while energy consumption is calculated by a dynamic energy simulation software. The scope of the paper offers an innovative method to define the optimal ventilation strategy for the building's HVAC system design to reduce the risk of infection with limited increases in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Results show that the desirable approach is the one in which the same low value of contagion risk is set in all rooms. This new approach results in significant energy savings, compared to the most common ones (setting the same high outdoor air rates for all rooms) to counteract the risk of infection. The paper presents a framework for probabilistic assessment of likelihood of infection from airborne diseases in confined spaces which are continuously occupied for relatively long periods (e.g., school classrooms). The proposed approach is based on a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) pre-calculations and analytical post-processing, to define relevant indices of infection probability. The practical applicability of the method is demonstrated through a case study, where different ventilation scenarios are considered for a school classroom. Corresponding infection probability indices are determined globally for the group of occupants. Furthermore, since the method does not rely on the well-mixing assumption, local probability indices are determined for each occupied location. The obtained results confirm the intuition that an increase of ventilation and/or air filtration reduces the overall likelihood of infection, though the observed positive effect is not uniform within the space. Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable, airborne infection caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is the most common presentation, although infection can spread anywhere to cause extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). In this paper, a novel fractional order mathematical model is designed for the transmission dynamics of tuberculosis. Uninfected vulnerable individuals are categorized into the following: susceptible with underline ailment and susceptible without underline ailment. The research seeks to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the proposed model and suggests comprehensive intervention measures for the control of tuberculosis among individuals with underline ailment. Some of the major highlights from the numerical investigation points out that TB vaccination is key to reducing the spread of TB among individuals with underline ailment. In healthcare settings, controlling airborne contaminants is crucial for ensuring the safety of healthcare workers and patients, especially in isolation rooms designed with negative pressure systems. This paper, a novel experimental study of the distribution of airborne contamination within an Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR) using tracer gas, identifies patients in Iraq to reduce the pollution and infection disease from a patient with COVID-19 or any other Respiratory patient disease by using a negative pressure room Terms of condition at three different Air Change (ACH) 6, 9 and 12 ACH. Concentrations of airborne contaminants in the breathing zone of surgical staff are measured, along with analyses of velocity, temperature, and humidity distribution in the patient's thermal plume. Negative pressure shows acceptable temperature and velocity variations according to the World Health Organization. Higher ACH and AC inlet velocities lead to decreased relative humidity and enhance heat removal efficiency, and air exchange efficiency. Contaminant removal, evaluated through the Contaminant Removal Effectiveness (CRE), exhibits superiority under high Air Conditioner AC inlet modes and increased ACH rates, recording values of 1.1 and 1.2. The study strongly recommends isolation rooms for respiratory patients in negative-pressure ventilated operating rooms to mitigate infection transmission risks to the surgical staff. Considerable loss of life, economic slowdown, and public health risk associated with the transmission of airborne respiratory pathogens was underscored by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Airborne transmission of zoonotic diseases such as the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has caused major disruptions to domestic and global food security. Current ambient air pathogen monitoring systems involves the collection of air samples from indoor settings suspected of viral contamination, followed by subsequent processing of capture samples to determine the presence and species of airborne viral matter. Nucleic acid amplification techniques are considered the gold standard for pathogen diagnostics. Currently, the necessary extraction and purification of viral RNA from air collector systems prior to sample analysis is both time consuming and performed manually. A monitoring system with separate air sampling and biochemical detection procedures is prone to delay the response to emergent viral threats. In this paper, we present a pathogen monitoring system that overcomes these limitations related to extraction and purification of viral samples and lays the groundwork for a real-time monitor for airborne viral pathogens. We demonstrate a high flow electrostatic precipitator system, that uses small collection wells as counter electrodes for pathogen collection. Integrated reverse-transcriptase loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) is used for detection of captured viral matter within wells. On-chip heating of collection wells is enabled by integrated planar heaters and small volumes of reagent (30 μ L) directly to the collection wells. Although mask-wearing is now widespread, the knowledge of how to quantify or improve their performance remains surprisingly limited and is largely based on empirical evidence. The objective of this study was to visualize the expiratory airflows from facemasks and evaluate aerosol transmission between two persons. Different visualization methods were explored, including the Schlieren optical system, laser/LED-particle imaging system, thermal camera, and vapor–SarGel system. The leakage flows and escaped aerosols were quantified using a hotwire anemometer and a particle counter, respectively. The results show that mask-wearing reduces the exhaled flow velocity from 2~4 m/s (with no facemask) to around 0.1 m/s, thus decreasing droplet transmission speeds. Cloth, surgical, and KN95 masks showed varying leakage flows at the nose top, sides, and chin. The leakage rate also differed between inhalation and exhalation. The neck gaiter has low filtration efficiency and high leakage fractions, providing low protection efficiency. There was considerable deposition in the mouth–nose area, as well as the neck, chin, and jaw, which heightened the risk of self-inoculation through spontaneous face-touching. A face shield plus surgical mask greatly reduced droplets on the head, neck, and face, indicating that double face coverings can be highly effective when a single mask is insufficient. The COVID-19 outbreak has shown the significance of ventilation and air conditioning systems in mitigating the transmission of the virus. Increasing air supply volume and utilizing indoor air purifiers are both effective measures to reduce the risk of infection. However, the specific air volume requirements in primary return air systems considering the impact of air purifiers installed within these systems have not been extensively studied. In this paper, the pathogenic aerosol emission rate was utilized to evaluate inhalation probability, taking into account the air purifier's removal efficiency. The notion of safe duration was additionally introduced as a criterion for quantifying indoor health and safety. A novel ventilation calculation method for different airborne infections to adjust safe duration was also presented. The findings suggested that the safe duration was mostly influenced by human-related factors, specifically occupant density and the effectiveness of facial masks in providing protection. When occupant density exceeded 0.35 people/m2, wearing facial masks with a higher protection coefficient was more effective in improving indoor safety and health than reducing occupant density. There has been an increasing awareness of indoor air quality (IAQ) management in green building designs, driven by the need to mitigate potential health risks and create sustainable and healthy indoor environments. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the critical role of ventilation and IAQ in reducing the risk of indoor airborne transmission. Governments and organisations worldwide have responded to this growing concern by implementing ventilation requirements and updating IAQ standards and guidelines. In the case of Hong Kong, a developed and densely populated city characterised by high-rise buildings, this study aims to provide a strategic framework for non-governmental agencies to address IAQ issues effectively. A comprehensive review of policies, regulations, and guidelines by international bodies and individual governments, along with an examination of the current IAQ management scheme in Hong Kong, has been conducted. Drawing inspiration from successful IAQ management strategies, the study aims to identify insights and potential pathways for the city's future development of IAQ management strategies. The airborne transmission of disease relies on the ability of microbes to survive aerosol transport and, subsequently, cause infection when interacting with a host. The length of time airborne microorganisms remain infectious in aerosol droplets is a function of numerous variables. We present measurements of mass and heat transfer from liquid aerosol droplets combined with airborne survival data for Escherichia coli MRE162, an ACDP category 1 microorganism used as a model system, under a wide range of environmental conditions, droplet compositions and microbiological conditions. In tandem, these companion measurements demonstrate the importance of understanding the complex relationship between aerosol microphysics and microbe survival. Specifically, our data consist of the correlation of a wide range of physicochemical properties (e.g., evaporation rates, equilibrium water content, droplet morphology, compositional changes in droplet solute and gas phase, etc.), with airborne viability decay to infer the impact of aerosol microphysics on airborne bacterial survival. Thus, a mechanistic approach to support prediction of the survival of microorganisms in the aerosol phase as a function of biological, microphysical, environmental, and experimental (aerosol-generation and sampling) processes is presented. Specific findings include the following: surfactants do not increase bacteria stability in aerosol, while both the bacteria growth phase and bacteria concentration may affect the rate at which bacteria decay in aerosol. Experimental studies can provide understanding, knowledge and real-case empirical evidence on the effects of building ventilation and environmental factors on airborne transmission in hospitals. Information obtained from existing studies gives insight into formulating engineering solutions and management practices to combat nosocomial airborne infections. A systemic review was conducted to summarize the experimental methods, research interests, useful results and limitations. With a steady but slow trend of increasing interest, experimental studies have been focusing mainly on the effects of ventilation systems, strategies and configurations on airborne transmission. The dispersion of bioaerosols under the combined effects of environmental factors, emission scenarios and human movement was investigated. Localized ventilation, air purifiers and disinfection technologies were also examined. The experimental techniques and some useful insights on optimal ventilation strategies and management practices were summarized and highlighted. Limitations of the empirical studies included sampling difficulties, limited scale and a number of testing scenarios, uncontrolled/unconsidered influencing factors and the media for experimentations. Using IoT-based sampling devices for experiments and real-time monitoring of bioaerosols or their surrogates, field surveys on a case-by-case basis in hospitals and interdisciplinary studies and collaborations could help overcome the research challenges and provide practical and effective solutions to minimize airborne transmission in hospitals. A well-ventilated room is essential to reduce the risk of airborne transmission. As such, the scientific community sets minimum limits on ventilation with the idea that increased ventilation reduces pathogen concentration and thus reduces the risk of transmission. In contrast, the upper limit on ventilation is usually determined by human comfort and the need to reduce energy consumption. While average pathogen concentration decreases with increased ventilation, local concentration depends on multiple factors and may not follow the same trend, especially within short exposure times over large separation distances. Here, we show through experiments and high-fidelity simulations the existence of a worst-case ventilation where local pathogen concentration increases near the receiving host. This occurs during the type of meetings that were recommended during the pandemic (and in some cases solely authorized) with reduced occupancy adhering to social distancing and short exposure times below 20 minutes. Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 aerosol remains contentious. Importantly, whether cough or breath-generated bioaerosols can harbor viable and replicating virus remains largely unclarified. We performed size-fractionated aerosol sampling (Andersen cascade impactor) and evaluated viral culturability in human cell lines (infectiousness), viral genetics, and host immunity in ambulatory participants with COVID-19. Sixty-one percent (27/44) and 50% (22/44) of participants emitted variant-specific culture-positive aerosols <10μm and <5μm, respectively, for up to 9 days after symptom onset. Aerosol culturability is significantly associated with lower neutralizing antibody titers, and suppression of transcriptomic pathways related to innate immunity and the humoral response. A nasopharyngeal Ct <17 rules-in ~40% of aerosol culture-positives and identifies those who are probably highly infectious. A parsimonious three transcript blood-based biosignature is highly predictive of infectious aerosol generation (PPV > 95%). There is considerable heterogeneity in potential infectiousness i.e., only 29% of participants were probably highly infectious (produced culture-positive aerosols <5μm at ~6 days after symptom onset). These data, which comprehensively confirm variant-specific culturable SARS-CoV-2 in aerosol, inform the targeting of transmission-related interventions and public health containment strategies emphasizing improved ventilation. SARS-CoV-2 can be spread by aerosols. Here the authors show that between 50-60% of ambulatory COVID-19 patients exhale culturable virus and that this is associated with lower neutralizing antibody titers and suppression of immune related transcriptomic pathways. To address the issues of signal waveform distortion and inter-symbol interference, both of which lead to performance degradation in airborne laser communication due to multipath transmission in airborne air-to-air channels, theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) simulation methods were employed. Based on airborne application conditions, this research conducted numerical simulations of the Gaussian beam multipath transmission in an air-to-air channel, with a focus on analyzing the impact of meteorological conditions, communication distance, transmitter power, and initial pulse width on the pulse time spreading characteristics of received optical signals. In addition, an analysis of these parameters' impact on the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and bit error rate (BER) was conducted. COVID-19 is an airborne disease, with the vast majority of infections occurring indoors. In comparison, little transmission occurs outdoors. Here, we investigate the airborne transmission pathways that differentiate the indoors from outdoors and conclude that profound differences exist, which help to explain why SARS-CoV-2 transmission is much more prevalent indoors. Near- and far-field transmission pathways are discussed along with factors that affect infection risk, with aerosol concentration, air entrainment, thermal plumes, and occupancy duration all identified as being influential. In particular, we present the fundamental equations that underpin the Wells–Riley model and show the mathematical relationship between inhaled virus particles and quanta of infection. A simple model is also presented for assessing infection risk in spaces with incomplete air mixing. Transmission risk is assessed in terms of aerosol concentration using simple 1D equations, followed by a description of thermal plume–ceiling interactions. With respect to this, we present new experimental results using Schlieren visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on the Eulerian–Lagrangian approach. Pathways of airborne infection are discussed, with the key differences identified between indoors and outdoors. In particular, the contribution of thermal and exhalation plumes is evaluated, and the presence of a near-field/far-field feedback loop is postulated, which is absent outdoors. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) disinfection technology is effective in inactivating microorganisms. However, its performance can vary against different microorganisms due to their diverse structural and genomic features. Thus, rapid predictions of UV (254 nm) inactivation kinetics are essential, particularly for highly infectious emerging pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2, during the extemporary COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, aiming at single-strand RNA (ssRNA) viruses, an improved genomic model was introduced to predict the UV inactivation kinetics of viral genomes using genome sequence data. First, the overall virus infectivity loss in an aqueous matrix was estimated as the sum of damage to both the entire genome and the protein capsid. Then, the "UV rate constant ratio of aerosol and liquid" was used to convert the UV rate constant for viruses in a liquid-based matrix to an airborne state. The prediction model underwent both quantitative and qualitative validation using experimental data from this study and the literature. Finally, with the goal of mitigating potential airborne transmission of ssRNA viruses in indoor environments, this paper summarizes existing in-duct UVGI system designs and evaluates their germicidal performance. The prediction model may serve as a preliminary tool to assess the effectiveness of a UVGI system for emerging or unculturable viruses or to estimate the required UV dose when designing such a system. The global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of indoor air quality and ventilation to mitigate the spread of respiratory viral infections. Schools, in particular, represent a vulnerable environment with high occupancy rates, prolonged exposure times and often inadequately ventilated rooms. This paper evaluates the functionality of different natural and retrofitted mechanical ventilation strategies in this context. An experimental setup, combining empirical measurements with building performance simulation and analytical risk analysis was used to assess key performance characteristics, including the energetic performance, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and the airborne infection risk of SARS-CoV-2. The results of this study underscore the need for a holistic approach to ventilation design in schools, taking into consideration the balance between energy performance, carbon emissions, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and associated health factors. We demonstrate that the risk of one or more long-range airborne infections, with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, can be reduced by >50% through appropriate use of natural, mechanical or hybrid ventilation in a classroom setting. Current models to determine the risk of airborne disease infection are typically based on a backward quantification of observed infections, leading to uncertainties, e.g., due to the lack of knowledge whether the index person was a superspreader. In contrast, the present work presents a forward infection risk model that calculates the inhaled dose of infectious virus based on the virus emission rate of an emitter and a prediction of Lagrangian particle trajectories using CFD, taking both the residence time of individual particles and the biodegradation rate into account. The estimation of the dose-response is then based on data from human challenge studies. Considering the available data for SARS-CoV-2 from the literature, it is shown that the model can be used to estimate the risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 in the cabin of a Do728 single-aisle aircraft. However, the virus emission rate during normal breathing varies between different studies and also by about two orders of magnitude within one and the same study. A sensitivity analysis shows that the uncertainty in the input parameters leads to uncertainty in the prediction of the infection risk, which is between 0 and 12 infections among 70 passengers. This highlights the importance and challenges in terms of superspreaders for risk prediction, which are difficult to capture using standard backward calculations. Transmission of an airborne disease can occur when an individual exhales respiratory particles that contain infectious pathogens. Surgical face masks are often used to reduce the amount of respiratory aerosol emitted into the environment by an individual while also lowering the concentration of particles the individual inhales. Respiratory aerosol generation is activity-dependent with high person-to-person variability. Moreover, mask fit differs among people. Here, we measure the efficacy of surgical masks (EN14683 Type IIR) in reducing both aerosol (0.3 − 20 µm diameter) and droplet (20 − 1000 µm diameter) emission during breathing, speaking and five speech and language therapy tasks performed by a human cohort. When participants wore a surgical face mask, measured particle number concentrations at the front of the mask were always lower than that for breathing without mitigation in place. For breathing and speaking, the through-mask filtration efficiencies were 80% and 87%, respectively, while for voice therapy tasks the through-mask filtration efficiencies ranged from 89% ("Hey!") to 95% (/a::/). Size-dependent through-mask filtration efficiencies were high (80 – 95%) for particles 0.5 − 2 µm diameter, with masks filtering a greater fraction of larger particle sizes. For particle sizes >4 µm diameter, filtration efficiencies of surgical face masks for all tested respiratory tasks were ∼100%. Surgical face masks significantly reduced the number of particles emitted from all respiratory activities. Airborne viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 are partly spread through aerosols containing viral particles. Inhalation of infectious airborne particles can lead to infection, a route that can be even more predominant than droplet or contact transmission. To study the transmission between a susceptible and an infected person, we estimated the distribution of arrival times of small diffusing aerosol particles to the inhaled region located below the nose until the number of particles reaches a critical threshold. Our results suggested that although contamination by continuous respiration can take approximately 90 min at a distance of 0.5 m, it is reduced to a few minutes when coughing or sneezing. Interestingly, there is not much difference between outdoors and indoors when the air is still. When a window is open inside an office, the infection time is reduced. Finally, wearing a mask leads to a delay in the time to infection. To conclude, diffusion analysis provides several key timescales of viral airborne transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
