Nanocrystals with a size in the regime of vanishing quantum confinement, or bulk nanocrystals (BNCs), have emerged recently as viable solution processable optical gain materials in the green part of the spectrum. Here, we show that these properties can be extended to the crucial red region using CdSe BNCs. Through quantitative time-resolved spectroscopy, we can model these nanocrystals as bulk semiconductors, thereby revealing that the gain originates from an unbound electron-hole plasma state. The gain is broadband in nature and is not capped by Auger processes, but by a slower second-order recombination resulting in nanosecond gain lifetimes. Finally, optically pumped lasers under femtosecond pulsed and quasi-continuous wave operation are demonstrated using a photonic crystal surface emitting laser cavity, thereby stretching from 635 to 720 nm. Our results indicate that compositional variation can indeed provide spectral versatility to the BNC concept, while preserving the excellent gain metrics associated with it.

Alignment tolerant coupling interfaces are an important feat for mid-IR waveguides when moving closer to real-world sensing applications, as they allow for an easy and fast replacement of waveguides. In this work, we demonstrate the alignment tolerant behavior of a germanium-on-silicon trenched waveguide platform with monolithically integrated microlenses using backside coupling of an expanded beam for evanescent field sensing between 6.5 and 7.5 μm. The chip with a propagation loss of approximately 5 dB/cm was mounted and aligned, using active alignment, in a sample holder that could be moved in all three dimensions to induce misalignments with a precision of the manual actuator of 1.3 μm. Using this setup, the in-plane 1 dB alignment tolerances were measured to be ±16 μm, while the 1 dB alignment tolerances in the longitudinal direction were found to be larger than ±150 μm. Without the addition of the microlenses, we expect an in-plane 1 dB alignment tolerance of ±3 μm based on simulations. Optical absorption plays a central role in optoelectronic and photonic technologies. Strongly absorbing materials are thus needed for efficient and miniaturized devices. A uniform film much thinner than the wavelength can only absorb up to 50% of the incident light when embedded in a symmetric and homogeneous environment. Although deviating from these conditions allows higher absorption, finding the thinnest possible material with the highest intrinsic absorption is still desirable. Here, we demonstrate strong absorption by artificially stacking WS 2 monolayers into superlattices. We compare three simple approaches based on different spacer materials to surpass the peak absorptance of a single WS 2 monolayer, which stands at 16% on ideal substrates. Through direct monolayer stacking without an intentional spacer, we reach an absorptance of 27% for an artificial bilayer, although with limited control over interlayer distance. Using a molecular spacer via spin coating, we demonstrate controllable spacer thickness in a bilayer with 25% absorptance while increasing photoluminescence thanks to doping. Finally, we exploit the atomic layer deposition of alumina spacers to boost the absorptance to 31% for a 4-monolayer superlattice. Combining integrated optical platforms with solution-processable materials offers a clear path toward miniaturized and robust light sources, including lasers. A limiting aspect for red-emitting materials remains the drop in efficiency at high excitation density due to non-radiative quenching pathways, such as Auger recombination. Next to this, lasers based on such materials remain ill characterized, leaving questions about their ultimate performance. Here, we show that colloidal quantum shells (QSs) offer a viable solution for a processable material platform to circumvent these issues. We first show that optical gain in QSs is mediated by a 2D plasma state of unbound electron-hole pairs, opposed to bound excitons, which gives rise to broad-band and sizable gain across the full red spectrum with record gain lifetimes and a low threshold. Moreover, at high excitation density, the emission efficiency of the plasma state does not quench, a feat we can attribute to an increased radiative recombination rate. Finally, QSs are integrated on a silicon nitride platform, enabling high spectral contrast, surface emitting, and TE-polarized lasers with ultranarrow beam divergence across the entire red spectrum from a small surface area. Our results indicate QS materials are an excellent materials platform to realize highly performant and compact on-chip light sources.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have become a versatile optoelectronic material for emitting and detecting light that can overcome the limitations of a range of electronic and photonic technology platforms. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs), for example, face the persistent challenge of combining active materials with passive circuitry ideally suited for guiding light. Here, we demonstrate the integration of photodiodes (PDs) based on PbS QDs on silicon nitride waveguides (WG). Analyzing planar QDPDs first, we argue that the main limitation WG-coupled QDPDs face is detector saturation induced by the high optical power density of the guided light. Using the cladding thickness and waveguide width as design parameters, we mitigate this issue, and we demonstrate WG-QDPDs with an external quantum efficiency of 67.5% at 1275 nm that exhibit a linear photoresponse for input powers up to 400 nW. In the next step, we demonstrate a compact infrared spectrometer by integrating these WG-QDPDs on the output channels of an arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexer. Nanophotonics can boost the weak circular dichroism of chiral molecules. One mechanism for enhanced chiral sensing relies on using a resonator to create fields with high optical chirality at the molecular position. Here, we elucidate how the reverse interaction between molecules and the resonator, called chirality transfer, can produce stronger circular dichroism. The chiral analyte modifies the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the resonator, imprinting a chiral response on an otherwise achiral resonance. We demonstrate that silicon nanoparticles and metasurfaces tailored for chirality transfer generate chiroptical signals orders of magnitude higher than the contribution from optical chirality alone. We derive closed-form equations for the dependence of chirality transfer on molecular chirality, molecule-resonator distance, and Mie coefficients. We propose a dielectric metasurface for a 900-fold circular dichroism enhancement on the basis of these principles. Finally, we identify a fundamental limit to chirality transfer. Our findings thus establish key concepts for nanophotonic chiral sensing.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are nanostructured semiconductors with prospects in optoelectronics and photocatalysis. Several bottom-up procedures to synthesize such materials have been developed yielding colloidal transition metal dichalcogenides (c-TMDs). Where such methods initially yielded multilayered sheets with indirect band gaps, recently, also the formation of monolayered c-TMDs became possible. Despite these advances, no clear picture on the charge carrier dynamics in monolayer c-TMDs exists to date. Here, we show through broadband and multiresonant pump-probe spectroscopy, that the carrier dynamics in monolayer c-TMDs are dominated by a fast electron trapping mechanism, universal to both MoS 2 and MoSe 2 , contrasting hole-dominated trapping in their multilayered counterparts. Through a detailed hyperspectral fitting procedure, sizable exciton red shifts are found and assigned to static shifts originating from both interactions with the trapped electron population and lattice heating. Our results pave the way to optimizing monolayer c-TMDs via passivation of predominantly the electron-trap sites.

Tailoring the interaction between light and sound has opened new possibilities in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that range from achieving quantum control of light to high-speed information processing. However, the actuation of sound waves in Si PICs usually requires integration of a piezoelectric thin film. Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is a promising material due to its strong piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling coefficient. Unfortunately, the traditional methods to grow PZT on silicon are detrimental for photonic applications due to the presence of an optical lossy intermediate layer. In this work, we report integration of a high quality PZT thin film on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic chip using an optically transparent buffer layer. We demonstrate acousto-optic modulation in silicon waveguides with the PZT actuated acoustic waves. We fabricate interdigital transducers (IDTs) on the PZT film with a contact photolithography and electron-beam lithography to generate the acoustic waves in MHz and GHz ranges, respectively. We obtain a V π L ∼ 3.35 V·cm at 576 MHz from a 350 nm thick gold (Au) IDT with 20 finger-pairs. After taking the effect of mass-loading and grating reflection into account, we measured a V π L ∼ 3.60 V·cm at 2 GHz from a 100 nm thick aluminum (Al) IDT consisting of only four finger-pairs. Thus, without patterning the PZT film nor suspending the device, we obtained figures-of-merit comparable to state-of-the-art modulators based on SOI, making it a promising candidate for a broadband and efficient acousto-optic modulator for future integration., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are primed to realize a variety of photonic devices that rely on the transient properties of photogenerated charges, yet little is known on the change of the refractive index. The associated optical phase changes can be beneficial or undesired depending on the application, but require proper quantification. Measuring optical phase modulation of dilute 2D materials is, however, not trivial with common methods. Here, we demonstrate that 2D colloidal CdSe quantum wells, a useful model system, can modulate the phase of light across a broad spectrum using a femtosecond interferometry method. Next, we develop a toolbox to calculate the time-dependent refractive index of colloidal 2D materials from widely available transient absorption experiments using a modified effective medium algorithm. Our results show that the excitonic features of 2D materials result in broadband, ultrafast, and sizable phase modulation, even extending to the near infrared because of intraband transitions.

Merging of electronics with biology, defined as bioelectronics, at the nanoscale holds considerable promise for sensing and modulating cellular behavior. Advancing our understanding of nanobioelectronics will facilitate development and enable applications in biosensing, tissue engineering, and bioelectronic medicine. However, studies investigating the electrical effects when merging wireless conductive nanoelectrodes with biology are lacking. Consequently, a tool is required to develop a greater understanding of merging conductive nanoparticles with cells. Herein, this challenge is addressed by developing an impedimetric method to evaluate bipolar electrode (BPE) systems that could report on electrical input. A theoretical framework is provided, using impedance to determine if conductive nanoparticles can be polarized and used to drive current. It is then demonstrated that 125 nm of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) bipolar electrodes (BPEs) could be sensed in the presence of cells when incorporated intracellularly at 500 μg/mL using water and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as electrolytes. These results highlight how nanoscale BPEs act within biological systems. We report on a statistical tool based on partial least-squares regression (PLSR) able to retrieve single-component concentrations in a multiple-gas mixture characterized by spectrally overlapping absorption features. Absorption spectra of mixtures of CO-N 2 O and mixtures of C 2 H 2 -CH 4 -N 2 O, both diluted in N 2 , were detected in the mid-IR range by exploiting quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and using two quantum cascade lasers as light sources. Single-gas reference spectra of each target molecule were acquired and used as PLSR-based algorithm training data set. The concentration range explored in the analysis varies from a few parts-per-million (ppm) to thousands of ppm. Within this concentration range, the influence of the gas matrix on nonradiative relaxation processes can be neglected. Exploiting the ability of PLSR to deal with correlated data, these spectra were used to generate new simulated spectra, i.e., linear combinations of the reference ones. A Gaussian noise distribution was added to the created data set, simulating the real QEPAS signal fluctuations around the peak value. Compared with standard multilinear regression, PLSR predicted gas concentrations with a calibration error up to 5 times better, even with absorption features with spectral overlap greater than 97%.

Naturally occurring paramagnetic species (PS), such as free radicals and paramagnetic metalloproteins, play an essential role in a multitude of critical physiological processes including metabolism, cell signaling, and immune response. These highly dynamic species can also act as intrinsic biomarkers for a variety of disease states, while synthetic paramagnetic probes targeted to specific sites on biomolecules enable the study of functional information such as tissue oxygenation and redox status in living systems. The work presented herein describes a new sensing method that exploits the spin-dependent emission of photoluminescence (PL) from an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond for rapid, nondestructive detection of PS in living systems. Uniquely this approach involves simple measurement protocols that assess PL contrast with and without the application of microwaves. The method is demonstrated to detect concentrations of paramagnetic salts in solution and the widely used magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent gadobutrol with a limit of detection of less than 10 attomol over a 100 μm × 100 μm field of view. Real-time monitoring of changes in the concentration of paramagnetic salts is demonstrated with image exposure times of 20 ms. Further, dynamic tracking of chemical reactions is demonstrated via the conversion of low-spin cyanide-coordinated Fe 3+ to hexaaqua Fe 3+ under acidic conditions. Finally, the capability to map paramagnetic species in model cells with subcellular resolution is demonstrated using lipid membranes containing gadolinium-labeled phospholipids under ambient conditions in the order of minutes. Overall, this work introduces a new sensing approach for the realization of fast, sensitive imaging of PS in a widefield format that is readily deployable in biomedical settings. Ultimately, this new approach to nitrogen vacancy-based quantum sensing paves the way toward minimally invasive real-time mapping and observation of free radicals in in vitro cellular environments.

Superlattices of epitaxially connected nanocrystals (NCs) are model systems to study electronic and optical properties of NC arrays. Using elemental analysis and structural analysis by in situ X-ray fluorescence and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering, respectively, we show that epitaxial superlattices of PbSe NCs keep their structural integrity up to temperatures of 300 °C; an ideal starting point to assess the effect of gentle thermal annealing on the superlattice properties. We find that annealing such superlattices between 75 and 150 °C induces a marked red shift of the NC band-edge transition. In fact, the post -annealing band-edge reflects theoretical predictions on the impact of charge carrier delocalization in these epitaxial superlattices. In addition, we observe a pronounced enhancement of the charge carrier mobility and a reduction of the hopping activation energy after mild annealing. While the superstructure remains intact at these temperatures, structural defect studies through X-ray diffraction indicate that annealing markedly decreases the density of point defects and edge dislocations. This indicates that the connections between NCs in as-synthesized superlattices still form a major source of grain boundaries and defects, which prevent carrier delocalization over multiple NCs and hamper NC-to-NC transport. Overcoming the limitations imposed by interfacial defects is therefore an essential next step in the development of high-quality optoelectronic devices based on NC solids.

The development of a dual-gas quartz-enhanced photoacoustic (QEPAS) sensor capable of simultaneous detection of water vapor and alternatively methane or nitrous oxide is reported. A diode laser and a quantum cascade laser (QCL) excited independently and simultaneously both the fundamental and the first overtone flexural mode of the quartz tuning fork (QTF), respectively. The diode laser targeted a water absorption line located at 7181.16 cm -1 (1.392 μm), while the QCL emission wavelength is centered at 7.71 μm and was tuned to target two strong absorption lines of methane and nitrous oxide, located at 1297.47 and 1297.05 cm -1 , respectively. Two sets of microresonator tubes were positioned, respectively, at the antinode points of the fundamental and the first overtone flexural modes of the QTF to enhance the QEPAS signal-to-noise ratio. Detection limits of 18 ppb for methane, 5 ppb for nitrous oxide and 20 ppm for water vapor have been achieved at a lock-in integration time of 100 ms.

A plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) process to deposit metallic gold is reported, using the previously reported Me 3 Au(PMe 3 ) precursor with H 2 plasma as the reactant. The process has a deposition window from 50 to 120 °C with a growth rate of 0.030 ± 0.002 nm per cycle on gold seed layers, and it shows saturating behavior for both the precursor and reactant exposure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that the gold films deposited at 120 °C are of higher purity than the previously reported ones (<1 at. % carbon and oxygen impurities and <0.1 at. % phosphorous). A low resistivity value was obtained (5.9 ± 0.3 μΩ cm), and X-ray diffraction measurements confirm that films deposited at 50 and 120 °C are polycrystalline. The process forms gold nanoparticles on oxide surfaces, which coalesce into wormlike nanostructures during deposition. Nanostructures grown at 120 °C are evaluated as substrates for free-space surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and exhibit an excellent enhancement factor that is without optimization, only one order of magnitude weaker than state-of-the-art gold nanodome substrates. The reported gold PE-ALD process therefore offers a deposition method to create SERS substrates that are template-free and does not require lithography. Using this process, it is possible to deposit nanostructured gold layers at low temperatures on complex three-dimensional (3D) substrates, opening up opportunities for the application of gold ALD in flexible electronics, heterogeneous catalysis, or the preparation of 3D SERS substrates.

Single-photon sources and detectors are indispensable building blocks for integrated quantum photonics, a research field that is seeing ever increasing interest for numerous applications. In this work, we implemented essential components for a quantum key distribution transceiver on a single photonic chip. Plasmonic antennas on top of silicon nitride waveguides provide Purcell enhancement with a concurrent increase of the count rate, speeding up the microsecond radiative lifetime of IR-emitting colloidal PbS/CdS quantum dots (QDs). The use of low-fluorescence silicon nitride, with a waveguide loss smaller than 1 dB/cm, made it possible to implement high extinction ratio optical filters and low insertion loss spectrometers. Waveguide-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors allow for low time-jitter single-photon detection. To showcase the performance of the components, we demonstrate on-chip lifetime spectroscopy of PbS/CdS QDs. The method developed in this paper is predicted to scale down to single QDs, and newly developed emitters can be readily integrated on the chip-based platform.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading global cause of death from a single infectious agent. Registered incidence rates are low, especially in low-resource countries with weak health systems, due to the disadvantages of current diagnostic techniques. A major effort is directed to develop a point-of-care (POC) platform to reduce TB deaths with a prompt and reliable low-cost technique. In the frame of the European POCKET Project, a novel POC platform for the direct and noninvasive detection of TB in human urine was developed. The photonic sensor chip is integrated in a disposable cartridge and is based on a highly sensitive Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) transducer combined with an on-chip spectral filter. The required elements for the readout are integrated in an instrument prototype, which allows real-time monitoring and data processing. In this work, the novel POC platform has been employed for the direct detection of lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a lipopolysaccharide found in the mycobacterium cell wall. After the optimization of several parameters, a limit of detection of 475 pg/mL (27.14 pM) was achieved using a direct immunoassay in undiluted human urine in less than 15 min. A final validation of the technique was performed using 20 clinical samples from TB patients and healthy donors, allowing the detection of TB in people regardless of HIV coinfection. The results show excellent correlation to those obtained with standard techniques. These promising results demonstrate the high sensitivity, specificity and applicability of our novel POC platform, which could be used during routine check-ups in developing countries.

We have designed multifunctional silver alginate hydrogel microcontainers referred to as loaded microcapsules with different sizes by assembling them via a template assisted approach using natural, highly porous calcium carbonate cores. Sodium alginate was immobilized into the pores of calcium carbonate particles of different sizes followed by cross-linking via addition of silver ions, which had a dual purpose: on one hand, the were used as a cross-linking agent, albeit in the monovalent form, while on the other hand they have led to formation of silver nanoparticles. Monovalent silver ions, an unusual cross-linking agent, improve the sensitivity to ultrasound, lead to homogeneous distribution of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles appeared on the shell of the alginate microcapsules in the twin-structure as determined by transmission electron microscopy. Remote release of a payload from alginate containers by ultrasound was found to strongly depend on the particle size. The possibility to use such particles as a platform for label-free molecule detection based on the surface enhanced Raman scattering was demonstrated. Cytotoxicity and cell uptake studies conducted in this work have revealed that microcontainers exhibit nonessential level of toxicity with an efficient uptake of cells. The above-described functionalities constitute building blocks of a theranostic system, where detection and remote release can be achieved with the same carrier.

The controlled wetting and dewetting of surfaces is a primary mechanism used by beetles in nature, such as the ladybird and the leaf beetle for underwater locomotion.1 Their adhesion to surfaces underwater is enabled through the attachment of bubbles trapped in their setae-covered legs. Locomotion, however, is performed by applying mechanical forces in order to move, attach, and detach the bubbles in a controlled manner. Under synthetic conditions, however, when a bubble is bound to a surface, it is nearly impossible to maneuver without the use of external stimuli. Thus, actuated wetting and dewetting of surfaces remain challenges. Here, electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) is used for the manipulation of bubble-particle complexes on unpatterned surfaces. Bubbles nucleate on catalytic Janus disks adjacent to a hydrophobic surface. By changing the wettability of the surface through electrowetting, the bubbles show a variety of reactions, depending on the shape and periodicity of the electrical signal. Time-resolved (μs) imaging of bubble radial oscillations reveals possible mechanisms for the lateral mobility of bubbles on a surface under electrowetting: bubble instability is induced when electric pulses are carefully adjusted. This instability is used to control the surface-bound bubble locomotion and is described in terms of the change in surface energy. It is shown that a deterministic force applied normal can lead to a random walk of micrometer-sized bubbles by exploiting the phenomenon of contact angle hysteresis. Finally, bubble use in nature for underwater locomotion and the actuated bubble locomotion presented in this study are compared.

The cooling dynamics of hot charge carriers in colloidal lead chalcogenide nanocrystals is studied by hyperspectral transient absorption spectroscopy. We demonstrate a transient accumulation of charge carriers at a high energy critical point in the Brillouin zone. Using a theoretical study of the cooling rate in lead chalcogenides, we attribute this slowing down of charge carrier cooling to a phonon scattering bottleneck around this critical point. The relevance of this observation for the possible harvesting of the excess energy of hot carriers by schemes such as multiexciton generation is discussed.

We present a compact, cost-effective, label-free, real-time biosensor based on long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) gold (Au) waveguides for the detection of dengue-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody, and we demonstrate detection in actual patient blood plasma samples. Two surface functionalization approaches are proposed and demonstrated: a dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) functionalized surface to capture dengue-specific IgM antibody in blood plasma and the reverse, a blood plasma functionalized surface to capture DENV-2. The results obtained via these two surface functionalization approaches are comparable to, or of greater quality, than those collected by conventional IgM antibody capture enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (MAC-ELISA). Our second functionalization approach was found to minimize nonspecific binding, thus improving the sensitivity and accuracy of the test. We also demonstrate reuse of the biosensors by regenerating the sensing surface down to the virus (or antibody) level or down to the bare Au.

Using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrate that lead chalcogenide nanocrystals show considerable photoinduced absorption (PA) in a broad wavelength range just below the band gap. The time-dependent decay of the PA signal correlates with the recovery of the band gap absorption, indicating that the same carriers are involved. On this basis, we assign this PA signal to intraband absorption, that is, the excitation of photogenerated carriers from the bottom of the conduction band or the top of the valence band to higher energy levels in the conduction and valence band continuum. We confirm our experiments with tight-binding calculations. This broadband response in the commercially interesting near- to mid-infrared range is very relevant for ultra-high-speed all-optical signal processing. We benchmark the performance with bulk Si and Si nanocrystals.
