This paper introduces a new model for transient moisture equilibrium in oil-paper insulation, easily applicable even in a continuous way, based on Fick's second law. According to the model, the moisture concentration in paper follows step response function, but the equilibration time constant changes with time since it depends on temperature, paper thickness, equilibration moisture in oil-paper insulation, and number of oil-paper interfaces. The effect of HV impulses on surface and cavity partial discharges (PD) of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated in this work, by subjecting specimens to impulse voltages superimposed on a continuous AC voltage. The superposition of transient and AC voltage is relevant to insulation systems in power-system equipment, which is exposed to transients such as lightning and switching impulses during its operation. For several different PD-generating defects in oil-impregnated paper, the PD behaviors before and after the impulse are compared. The influence of moisture content is studied by using OIP with moisture content <0.5%, 3.0% and 5.5%. The results show a distinctive behavior of PD due to the impulse for each defect and insulation condition, either by change in the PD rate and magnitude or by causing PD inception or extinction. Recordings of the voltage signals and associated PD measurements during and after the incidence of a high voltage transient are of potential use for condition assessment of the insulation of power transformers and their bushings, as a form of online diagnostics. The simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables can be a fundamental tool to support insulation system design when operation dynamics, which includes voltage polarity inversions and load variation, becomes significant during the expected cable life. The field behavior during voltage and temperature transients is associated with intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes that can affect the cable design life. Traditional models employed for electric field simulations consider only the non–linear, steady–state dependence of conductivity on temperature and field magnitude, but they neglect the transient behavior of permittivity and conductivity, that is, polarization and charge trapping phenomena. These processes impact on the duration of the field transient and thus ageing. This paper discusses the numerical implementation of an electro–quasistatic model that can be used to perform transient simulations of electric fields in HVDC cables insulation. With respect to the model traditionally employed, the presented one is extended with Debye's equations for dielectric polarization processes. The model is implemented numerically using finite differences, or the Occhini equivalent circuit: this paper demonstrates that the two approaches are equivalent. This paper addresses the interactions among the control loops of voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) embedded in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems and the impact of these interactions on the performance of individual control loops. Furthermore, this paper proposes a method to design the individual control loops, rather than the interconnected control system, such that the overall system stability is ensured in the presence of interactions. This paper addresses three aspects of the impact of control loop interactions on the overall control system of the VSC including stability, transient response, and steady-state response. To illustrate the impact of interactions on the VSC small-signal stability, stability regions of the interconnected control loops are obtained and compared against those of the various individual control loops. Then, a novel formulation of the VSC stability criterion is presented, and the small-gain theorem is utilized to determine a range of stabilizing gains for the interconnected control system. Moreover, new indices using the infinity norm are introduced to evaluate the impact of interactions on the transient response of the VSC. Finally, the DC gain of a certain set of transfer functions is used to assess the impact of control loops interactions on the set-point tracking capability of the VSC. The introduced indices along with time-domain simulations show that the transient response of the d-axis control loops is not impacted by the interactions, whereas that of the q-axis control loops is significantly impacted by the interactions. The study on the scattering mechanism of breaking ship waves provides important theoretical basis to the ship detection and radar imaging in a marine environment. This paper presents a new procedure for evaluating the electromagnetic scattering field of breaking ship waves over a perfect electric conductor sea surface. In this paper, different forms of the near-field ship waves are obtained by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, which provides a new means of analyzing a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction system in a detailed manner. Sufficient grids are used in the CFD numerical simulation to obtain the flow field information of the breaking waves. The accuracy of the breaking wave geometry has been improved obviously, which will lead to a better understanding of the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of breaking ship waves. Considering the multiple scattering between the ship hull and the breaking waves, the scattering field of the sea surface and the ship hull are evaluated by the forward–backward iterated physical optics algorithm. Both scattering characteristics of the breaking ship waves and distribution of the scattering coefficients are obtained. By comparing the bistatic scattering field in different situations, the numerical results show some important effects of the breaking ship waves, which are quite different from the effects of ship models. Transient stability of a power system can be significantly affected by wind power generators due to their stochastic power output and complex dynamic characteristics. This paper proposes a robust optimization approach for coordinating generation dispatch and emergency load shedding against transient instability under uncertain wind power output. The problem is modelled as a two-stage robust optimization (TSRO) model considering transient stability constraints, where the first-stage is to optimize the generation dispatch (preventive control) before a contingency and the second-stage decision is the emergency load shedding (emergency control) after the contingency occurrence under the worst case of wind power variation. To solve this TSRO problem, this paper also proposes a solution algorithm which integrates transient stability assessment and transient stability constraint construction in a column and constraint generation framework. The proposed method is validated on the New-England 39-bus system and the Nordic32 system, which shows high computational efficiency and stability robustness against uncertain wind power. Firing accuracy is a critical quantity of interest in the performance analysis of electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) exterior ballistics. Since the simulation technique is always used to simulate the complex physical system at a low cost, it is employed to evaluate the firing accuracy of railgun projectile with uncertainty in this paper. An exterior ballistics simulation model of the railgun, including 3-DOF flight mechanical model, relative kinematic model, and guidance law model, is developed to simulate the ballistics behavior in the missile target intercept mission. The firing accuracy is studied in this paper to compare the capability of EMRG with different ranges and muzzle velocities. In order to explore the firing accuracy of the guided projectile, the guidance precision analysis and ballistics uncertainty quantification are studied. In the guidance precision analysis, the shot range and efficiency are used to make a comparison. In addition, the sensitivity analysis and firing accuracy analysis are also performed in terms of uncertainty quantification. Locked-rotor testing is a common end-of-the-line check performed on most motors used in the petrochemical industry. Despite its popularity as a verification of rotor integrity and to confirm the current draw and torque produced at zero speed, there can be much ambiguity in how the test is performed. This test is not required by the National Electrical Manufactures Association Motors and Generators Standard (NEMA MG1) or the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard 112 (IEEE 112). IEEE 112 contains a locked-rotor test method, but there can be variations in the results based upon the test conditions (duration of voltage application and magnitude of applied voltage, for instance). The purpose of this paper is to describe how the test procedure employed affects the locked-rotor test results for both current and torque. Test generation procedures target a variety of fault models in order to produce test sets that are effective for defect detection. This paper considers the likely scenario where two-cycle skewed-load tests are generated to detect single transition faults, and the test set is complemented with tests for single stuck-at faults that are not detected by the transition fault test set. For this scenario, this paper makes several unique observations that can be utilized to produce a single compact test set that consists only of two-cycle skewed-load tests for both fault models. The first observation is that a single-cycle test for a stuck-at fault can be transformed into a skewed-load test that is guaranteed to detect the stuck-at fault without performing logic or fault simulation. The second observation is that skewed-load tests, which are transformed from single-cycle tests for stuck-at faults, sometimes detect more transition and stuck-at faults than tests that were generated for transition faults. The third observation is that a static test compaction procedure, which is based on the modification and removal of tests, is effective in this context because it allows tests for stuck-at faults to detect more transition faults and vice versa. Inverter-based resources respond differently than synchronous generation sources during power system faults, challenging line protection reliability. To understand the reliability challenges, Sandia National Laboratories and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) led a collaborative study with four inverter manufacturers (mix of Type 3 Wind, Type 4 Wind, and PV Solar) and two North American protective relay manufacturers. As part of this study, an electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) with “real-code” models representing inverter firmware was used to investigate the protective relay response to faults on the modeled power system with the different inverter types. The currents and voltages obtained from the study were then played back through line relay hardware with settings typical of systems with conventional generation. The protective relays exhibited the expected reliability challenges but provided insight into the behavior of inverter-based resources during power system faults. In this paper, we share some of the challenging cases with the responses of the different line protection schemes. This paper proposes a Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based method to construct composite indices to rapidly assess power system transient stability. By assigning appropriate weights to a few selected sub-indicators, a composite index can be constructed to guarantee a better coverage of worst-case stability scenarios of the power system. This paper provides an automatic method to construct a composite index with four sub-indicators calculated by the integral of acceleration, speed deviation and rotor angle of generators over a certain integration period using PCA. The effectiveness of the sub-indicators is validated first, followed by a comprehensive example of process of composite index construction, and the assessment of the influence of the effect of integration period on the performance of the composite index. This paper concerns the detection and identification of errors in the parameters of three-phase transposed as well as untransposed transmission line (TL) models used by various network applications. Such detailed models are increasingly needed in particular by power system applications where loads may not be balanced and/or TLs may not be symmetrical, and a full detailed three-phase solution may have to be obtained. To address this problem, the paper proposes an efficient algorithm for detection, identification, and estimation of parameter errors using synchronized phasor measurements. The suspect TL is detected using the modal domain networks in the first stage. The developed algorithm extends the previously developed largest normalized Lagrange multiplier (NLM) test for positive sequence parameters to the full coupled three-phase lines. An estimation method is also proposed for estimating the erroneous parameters, which takes into account the correlation of the parameters. This paper highlights an immediate need for renewable generation developers, manufacturers, utilities and industry standardization institutes to jointly address a challenge of capacitor switching transient immunity in inverter-based wind or solar farms. The need was identified from wide-area operation records which showed partial or full generation loss in coincidence with routine utility-owned capacitor switching. The lack of a clear industry guideline has caused confusion to all involved parties. This paper recommends all entities to address this challenge collaboratively through enhanced equipment specification, design, and test before a well-defined industry guideline becomes available. The objective of this two-part paper is to provide clarity to physical concepts used in the field of transformer modeling, to dispel common misconceptions regarding numerical instabilities, and to present unified modeling techniques for low-frequency transients. This paper focuses on proper modeling of nonlinearities (magnetizing branches) since these components are critical to determine the low-frequency behavior. A good low-frequency model should properly represent: normal operation, inrush currents, open and short circuit, out-of-phase synchronization transient of step-up transformers, geomagnetic-induced currents, ferroresonance, and harmonics. This paper discusses the derivation of electrical dual models from the equivalent (magnetic) reluctance networks and the direct application of the principle of duality. It is shown that different dual models need to be derived for different transformer geometries and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. This paper also compares double-sided versus single-sided dual models, and shows that the double-sided model is a more general approach. The mathematical equivalency of several leakage models (negative inductance, mutual coupling, and BCTRAN) is demonstrated for three-winding transformers. It is also shown that contrary to common belief, a negative inductance is not the source of numerical oscillations, but they occur due to the use of noncorrect topological models for representing the core. The risk of unstable subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) in DFIG-based wind parks radially connected to transmission lines with series capacitive compensation is typically assessed with numerous electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, which is a time-consuming process. However, not all operating scenarios present risk of SSO and require such a detailed investigation. This paper proposes two charts based on impedance equivalents of wind generators obtained through frequency scans to quickly map which combinations of parameters can create unstable SSOs and which combinations are risk-free. With the information, engineers can immediately filter out scenarios with no risk of instability and conduct detailed studies on fewer scenarios that are truly critical. These charts can be obtained with simple equations that use only information readily available in practice to engineers, without the need to run any computer simulation. The charts also reveal the key operating conditions that can increase the risk of an unstable SSO and provide real-time quantitative insights into how close a wind park is to an instability. Metal-oxide arresters (MOA) are widely used to protect equipment against transient electromagnetic disturbances (TED) like very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO), high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP), lightning pulse, et al. Researches on the performance of MOA under microsecond level rise-time TED are abundant, such as lightning pulse. However, when MOA is subjected to TED of rise-time at nanosecond level, the voltage/current responses of MOA are not fully studied due to the lack of a standardized and reliable test setup. In this paper, a test setup is proposed for acquiring the response behavior of MOA under nanosecond level pulse. The setup is comprised of a pulse generator, a two-branch transmission line system and a high voltage power divider. The generator can provide stable double exponential pulse with tunable rise-time ranging from 5 ns to 100 ns. The divider ensures an even distribution of voltage/current surge wave along the two-branch line. Through the numerical analysis, both impinging and residual surge waveforms could be retrieved from measurements. The use of synchronized measurement technology leads to a more reliable and secure operation of the power system. Phasor calculation is needed for all buses where a phasor measurement unit is installed, and fast and precise estimation is necessary for accurate monitoring, protection and control. The Prony algorithm is one promising method due to its capability to estimate phasor adaptively with changing frequency. The algorithm projects the signal on $L$ exponentially damped sine functions, where $L$ is the order of the Prony. However, the order under different conditions should be adapted automatically to reduce computation time. To adaptively specify the order, the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method is proposed in this paper to be combined with the Prony and named EMD-Prony. The EMD decomposes a signal into finite single oscillatory modes, representing the number of modes in the signal. EMD is also used as a pre-processing step to filter noise from an input signal of Prony. Therefore, EMD is proposed here as an assistant of Prony in a phasor estimation. Finally, the proposed method is tested on the benchmark signals proposed in the IEEE standard, signals obtained from a simulated power system, and measured data from a real-world power system. This paper presents an accurate and efficient model to represent the corona effect and frequency dependence of line parameters in electromagnetic transient simulations. The new method, named the voltage and frequency dependent line model (VFDLM), can be seen as a more general case of the well-known frequency-dependent (FD) or wideband (WB) line models, wherein the characteristic admittance and propagation function are considered voltage- and frequency-dependent parameters. The time domain traveling wave equations are solved using recursive convolutions and rational approximation through vector fitting (VF). Since the model can be represented by Norton equivalents, it is totally compatible with EMT-type programs. The model is validated through comparisons with three field measurement data available in the literature, and good agreement could be observed between them, showing that the VFDLM is a stable, efficient, and accurate approach to represent the corona effect in EMT-type programs. An electromagnetic transient study has been performed based on a practical 500 kV mixed transmission system. The system has overhead lines, submarine cables and underground cables. An exact expression of earth-return impedance for submarine cable has been developed. A new equivalent homogeneous earth method (EHEM) is also proposed based on the exact formula. The influences of air, seawater, seabed, wired armor structure and multi-layer seabed on series impedance and modal propagation constants of submarine cable are investigated. A novel modeling procedure on parametrical side of mixed transmission system is proposed in this paper. Moreover, the input sequence impedances of mixed transmission system are studied based on traditional Line / Cable Constant routines and the new method. Partial shading condition drastically reduces the maximum power output of photovoltaic array. Partial shading occurs due to several factors, such as flying birds, trees, and passing clouds. Many ways can be mitigated partial shading problems in photovoltaic (PV) array. One among the way is reconfiguration techniques, namely reconfigure the location of PV modules in PV array based on irradiance levels in order to distribute shading effects and increasing maximum power. This paper proposed an optimal SuDoKu reconfiguration pattern for $9\times 9$ total-cross-tied (TCT) PV array to improve maximum power under partial shading conditions. In this approach, the physical location of PV modules in TCT array are rearranged based on optimal SuDoKu style without altering the electrical connections, so that the shading effects can distribute over the array. Further, the performance of proposed pattern investigated with existing SuDoKu pattern under different shading conditions by comparing the global maximum power point, mismatch losses, fill-factor, and efficiency using MATLAB-Simulink. Based on the results of this paper, it concluded that the proposed optimal SuDoKu reconfiguration arrangement is reducing the wiring arrangement and increasing the shading distribution over the array as compared to SuDoKu arrangement. Railguns are current-driven guns that allow reaching large muzzle velocities and energies. In the military context, the long-range artillery scenario makes use of these two capabilities to enable the launch of hypervelocity projectiles to target distances above 100 km. As of today, the most advanced railgun project is conducted by the Office of Naval Research, Arlington, VA, USA, and features railguns with a muzzle energy of 32 MJ. Such large artillery railgun systems with efficiencies above 30% are fed by a pulsed power system with a nominal energy content of about 100 MJ. In contrast to this, experiments with French-German Research Institute’s (ISL) most powerful railgun, PEGASUS, have reached muzzle energies of 2 MJ, only. The nearer future ISL has to answer two questions: 1) is the railgun technology adequate for a long-range artillery scenario? 2) can the railgun launch a hypervelocity projectile which is being developed by other groups in ISL? To do so and to support the development of the hypervelocity projectile, a larger railgun installation with a significant increase of the energy and free flight capability is required. In this paper, three different railgun systems were investigated using an electric circuit simulation code. The systems are referred to by the energy being stored in the capacitors as 25, 50, and 100 MJ. The aim of this paper is to investigate what masses can be accelerated to the relevant velocity range for the long-range artillery scenario by these different primary energies. Co-simulation of heterogeneous systems allows for in-depth analysis of various aspects of power systems’ operation while staying within the environments of the simulation tools that are best fit to represent their respective domains. Equipped with a proprietary co-simulation platform, the paper focuses on the issue of power-conjugate coupling between parts of power grids modeled in transient stability and electromagnetic transient simulation tools. The problems of co-simulation stability and precision in presence of delays are tackled by means of designing a proper coupling interface. It is shown that two established interface methods – the V-I method and the Transmission Line Interface – are special cases of a generalized interface framework proposed in the paper. Moreover, a new interface algorithm is described by parametrizing the generalized framework. Analytical tools are also formulated to aid in the analysis of interface stability and precision via the concepts of passivity and transparency. Identifying sources of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) is crucial for understanding and mitigating incidents. Recent studies have shown that SSR impedance and power are effective indicators that can identify an SSR source. However, the calculation of two indexes requires SSR voltage and current phasors as the inputs, which are not directly available from existing online monitoring systems. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel method to calculate SSR impedance/power based on synchrophasors provided by a wide-area monitoring system. As a result, the online detection of SSR sources is enabled. Through mathematical derivation, it is revealed that a synchrophasor under SSR is dominated by four modes: two from the fundamental frequency and two from the SSR frequency. The problem thus can be transformed to a modal parameter extraction (MPE). Two classic MPE algorithms, Prony analysis and the matrix pencil method, are employed in this paper to extract the SSR parameters and calculate the SSR impedance/power. Their performances are verified using synthetic signals and electromagnetic transient simulations. Furthermore, the method is applied to an actual SSR incident involving 23 wind farms. The development of a revolutionary design for transmission lines was recently introduced by shifting phase configurations and sub-conductors into “unconventional” arrangements that were geometrically optimized to maximize natural power. The objective of this paper is to study the electromagnetic transients that result from the simultaneous and sequential line energization and re-energization of the previously developed unconventional high surge impedance loading (HSIL) lines. Statistical switching overvoltage (SSOV) studies are performed using a frequency domain method based on the inverse numerical Laplace transform. Compared to a conventional line, all unconventional HSIL line designs studied in this paper lead to very similar surges for long line lengths (400 km) and similar values for short line lengths (100 km), indicating additional advantages of these lines. The use of a frequency domain method for SSOV studies offers enhanced accuracy, simulation flexibility, and substantially lower computational burden compared with traditional time-domain methods. This paper summarizes the work performed by the Task Force —within Performance Characteristic Subcommittee of IEEE PES Transformers Committee— to investigate potential revisions to IEEE Std C57.142-2010. Although the scope of this document does not implicitly exclude HV and EHV systems, the existing document primarily includes examples and information on distribution voltage systems. A Task Force was formed to investigate the need to include information about power system transient events on HV systems more explicitly in this existing document. The Task Force was charged with the following tasks:-Establish system voltages encompassed by C57-142-2010 Guide. -Gather field data, reports, and literature on HV and EHV failures related to substation transients and transformer interaction. -Solicit input from the other technical committees on this subject. -Review IEC and CIGRE work in this area. -Recommend course of action on revision of the present Guide. -Recommend high level changes to the Guide. -Prepare final paper for the Subcommittee. In the course of this work several failure scenarios were identified. These are categorized and the failures are described in this paper. The final recommendations to the Subcommittee are summarized and recommendations are presented for the course of action on the revision/addition of HV and EHV material to the current C57.142 Guide. Online transient analysis plays an increasingly important role in dynamic power grids as the renewable generation continues growing. Traditional numerical methods for transient analysis not only are computationally intensive but also require precise contingency information as input, and therefore, are not suitable for online applications. Existing online transient assessment studies focus on the determination of post-contingency system stability or stability margin. This paper develops a novel graph-learning framework, Deep-learning Neural Representation or DNR, for online prediction, of the time-series trajectories of the system states using initial system responses that can be measured by phasor measurement units (PMUs). The proposed DNR framework consists of two sequential modules: a Network Constructor that captures network dependencies among generators, and a Dynamics Predictor that predicts the system trajectories. The key to improved prediction performance is the introduction of the spatio-temporal message-passing operations into graph neural networks with structural knowledge. Its effectiveness and scalability are validated through comparative studies, demonstrating the prediction performance under different contingency scenarios for systems of different sizes. This framework provides a solution to online predicting post-fault system dynamics based on real-time PMU measurements. Modal analysis in the continuous-time state-space is a mature and effective method for analyzing the subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) problems of power systems. But it has limitations on oscillation traceability analysis due to the loss of system topology information. To address this issue, a discrete-time domain modal analysis method is developed in this paper. It represents the target system as a networked discrete-time equivalent circuit and uses the nodal method to generate the state matrix, from which the discrete-time eigenvalues in the z-plane can be solved. Based on the oscillation frequency and damping ratio defined in the discrete-time domain, the stability of the oscillatory mode can be quantitatively analyzed. Then, participation factors analysis is carried out similarly to the continuous-time method to locate the contributive components. Most importantly, the distribution coefficients of branch currents/ node voltages are finally defined and derived for in-depth analysis of the oscillatory mode. With this index, the propagation path of the oscillation in the mesh power system is expected to be identified.The proposed method has been applied in several case systems with wind farms integrated. The periodic characteristic of modular multilevel converter (MMC), which originates from the multi-harmonic couplings among internal dynamics, results in challenges to develop the linear time-invariant (LTI) model of MMC. The linearization of MMC is inherently around time-periodic equilibrium trajectory. In this paper, two different methods to assess small-signal stability of MMC are compared. Both are based on the linear time-periodic (LTP) systems theory, but one is in the time domain (TD) and the other is in the frequency domain (FD). The LTP model of MMC is derived from the linearized arm averaged model. Then, an LTI model for the LTP system is constructed in the FD through the harmonic state-space method. Small-signal stability analysis based on Floquet theory and generalized Nyquist criterion, that accompany TD and FD, are introduced and compared. It is demonstrated that models developed in both domains can effectively capture the small-signal behavior of MMC. Third and higher-order harmonic components of the states have significant effect on the impedance-based stability analysis of MMC around mid-frequency range. When a single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault occurs in distribution networks, the existing faulty feeder detection techniques do not present reliable detection results. This paper introduces a novel faulty feeder detection method based on transient energy and cosine similarity. First, the fault characteristics of transient zero-sequence current (TZSC) are analyzed. It is found that the fault transient characteristics of transient components decrease as the grounding resistance increases. Second, to fully maintain the fault transient features, a fundamental frequency component (FFC) shifting method is introduced to remove FFCs. Next, the transient currents without containing FFCs are utilized to generate two fault indicators: transient energy within the first half power cycle and cosine similarity after the first half power cycle. After that step, to effectively merge the two fault indicators, the Laplace distribution is utilized. The fault possibility of each feeder can be quantitatively estimated by calculating the cumulative density function (CDF). Finally, the feeder with the maximum fault possibility is determined as the faulty feeder. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed detection method are verified in the radial distribution network and the modified IEEE 34-bus distribution network. The stability problem of low-voltage multi-terminal DC (MTDC) systems has drawn much interest. This paper focuses on the oscillation instability phenomenon of low-voltage MTDC systems and analyzes the interaction behavior between each voltage-source converter and the DC network oscillation mode. The typical structure and control strategy of a low-voltage MTDC system under master-slave control is first described, and its equivalent circuit is established. Then, an interaction behavior analytical model is proposed, and the source-network and network-load interaction characteristics are studied. Furthermore, a system stability analysis method is built based on the modularized modeling, which can solve the problem of how to address the complexity of high-order low-voltage MTDC systems. The transfer function of the whole system is conveniently established, revealing the system instability mechanism. The proposed method can provide effective stability assessment for low-voltage MTDC systems. Finally, the results are verified using electromagnetic transient simulation and experimentally validated using a low-voltage three-terminal DC system test platform with AC 0.4 kV/DC 800 V. The paper develops two computationally efficient models, namely a detailed equivalent model and an average-value model, with provisions for representation of the critical state of converter blocking, for modular multilevel converters with embedded storage. These models are indispensable in the simulation of dc faults. The developed detailed equivalent model provides accuracy that matches electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, with much reduced computational burden; the developed average-value model represents the averaged behavior of the converter by neglecting switching transients. Both models are extensively evaluated in the context of an HVDC system against benchmark results form a detailed switching model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. Deep learning (DL) techniques have shown promising performance for designing data-driven power system transient stability assessment (TSA) models. However, due to the deep structure of the DL, the resulting model is always a black-box and hard to explain, which hinders its practical adoption by the industry. This paper proposes an interpretable DL-based TSA model to balance the TSA accuracy and transparency. The proposed method combines the strong nonlinear modelling capability of a deep neural network and the interpretability of a decision tree (DT). Through regularizing DL-based model with the average DT path length in the training process, the proposed interpretable DL-based TSA method can visually explain the TSA decision-making process. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method can deliver highly accurate TSA results and interpretable TSA decision-making rules, which can be used for designing preventive control actions. This paper investigates on a new concept for very-fast transient overvoltages (VFTOs) attenuation in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The concept, first introduced by the authors in this paper, involves modification of the GIS disconnector contact system in order to dissipate the VFTO energy in damping elements placed inside the GIS busbar conductor. The concept is an alternative to the state-of-the-art method where magnetic rings are placed in the space between the GIS conductor and the enclosure. The proposed arrangement has no impact on the damping element on the dielectric design of the GIS busbar, and it highly reduces the impact on the GIS thermal design. To improve the reliability of power supply, reclosing schemes are required after transient faults, which commonly occur in overhead line based high voltage DC (HVDC) systems. However, in the event of permanent faults, the auto-reclosing scheme may cause a severe strike. To avoid the severe impacts caused by permanent faults, the fault type should be discriminated before activating the reclosing scheme. Therefore, an adaptive reclosing scheme based on phase characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the modulation of a periodic voltage by actively controlling the hybrid DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is introduced. Then, a cascaded π equivalent model and its decoupling algorithm are presented to analyze the frequency-domain characteristics of the measured impedance of the coupled overhead lines. From the frequency-domain characteristics, the frequency of the periodic detecting voltage is determined to analyze the phase features of the measured impedance at primary frequency. The permanent or transient faults can thus be accurately identified by using these different phase characteristics, with negligible influence on the healthy lines. Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations. Recently, a parametric average-value model (PAVM) has been presented for ac–dc rectifiers, which considers the internal faults of the converter. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to the dc–ac inverter systems, including the commutation failure of switches. The proposed PAVM also augments an automatic fault detection technique to determine the faulty switches. Using comprehensive simulation studies, the developed model is verified to accurately predict the commutation failure of switches and reconstruct the waveforms consistent with the detailed switching models of inverters while being computationally more efficient. Soil conductivity and permittivity have a substantial influence on lightning-electromagnetic transients in power system. In this paper, lightning-induced voltages are computed on a multi-conductor overhead line due to nearby first and subsequent return strokes. Besides, this study considers the longitudinal complex inductance of the line due to the penetration depth of electromagnetic fields through finitely conducting ground as well as the frequency dependent soil parameters using the finite-difference time-domain method. Various case studies in light of variations of return stroke velocity, line height, and soil conductivity are explored for thoughtful investigations. The obtained results reveal that the influence of this complex inductance on peak values of lightning induced voltages changes with varying the return stroke velocity. The fast development of renewable energies leads to an increase in the power electronics penetration in transmission systems. This is particularly true if one considers a 100% renewable energies power system, where wind and solar photovoltaic energies, which make most of the renewable energies connections today, are connected to the grid through power electronics converters. Because power electronics-based generators and synchronous machines-based generators have very different dynamic behaviours, some approximations usually used to run transient simulations of transmission systems might not be optimal for future grids. The systematic use of the phasor approximation applied to the power lines, implemented in most of the Transient Simulation Programs, is indeed not relevant any more. To avoid the use of Electromagnetic Transient simulations, that are resource-demanding and time-consuming, this paper presents a novel Model Order Reduction technique for large grids with a high penetration of power electronic devices. This paper investigates the transient stability of power systems co-dominated by different types of grid-forming (GFM) devices. Synchronous generators (SGs and VSGs) and droop-controlled inverters are typical GFM devices in modern power systems. SGs/VSGs are able to provide inertia while droop-controlled inverters are generally inertialess. The transient stability of power systems dominated by homogeneous GFM devices has been extensively studied. Regarding the hybrid system jointly dominated by heterogeneous GFM devices, the transient stability is rarely reported. This paper aims to fill this gap. It is found that the synchronization behavior of the hybrid system can be described by a second-order motion equation, resembling the swing equation of SGs. Moreover, two significant differences from conventional power systems are discovered. The first is that the droop control dramatically enhances the damping effect, greatly affecting the transient stability region. The second is that the frequency state variable exhibits a jump at the moment of fault disturbances, thus impacting the post-fault initial-state location and stability assessment. The underlying mechanism behind the two new characteristics is clarified and the impact on the transient stability performance is analyzed and verified. This paper introduces a novel frequency domain technique to globally evaluate the accuracy of electro-magnetic transient simulations. It is shown that simulation accuracy at low frequencies can sometimes be poorer than at high frequency. A modified approach which quantifies accuracy from a driving point as a function of frequency is also introduced that uses the Bilinear Transformation and Norton equivalents, to produce a “simulation accuracy spectrum”. This approach can be applied to large systems without explicitly forming state space equations. It also permits the accuracy analysis of networks with distributed components such as frequency dependent transmission lines. Two examples are used to verify the proposed technique, a small network with a frequency dependent transmission line modeled by the universal line model; and the IEEE 39 bus system connected with an LCC-HVdc system. The paper presents the results of experimental registrations and numerical simulations of the transient overvoltages caused by single phase intermittent arc earth fault in 35 kV network with isolated neutral. Experimental laboratory investigation is performed in order to implement appropriate arc fault model for arcs with low and discontinuous current. Single phase to earth arc fault is created in field in 35 kV network. Numerical model of the system is created in EMTP-ATP software. Prestrike phenomenon in circuit breakers (CBs) can cause electromagnetic transients in power systems. Therefore, the investigation of this phenomenon has considerable importance. The scope of this paper is to investigate the effects and importance of arcing contact shape on the prestrike in SF6 gas CBs. In order to simulate the prestrike with high accuracy, a multi-physics model is developed precisely. In this model, equations of motion of the SF6 gas, the electric charge conservation equation, turbulent equations, heat transfer equation in fluids, and the governing equations of an electric circuit in which the CB works are considered simultaneously. The numerical study is performed on a 72.5-kV single pressure puffer type SF6 CB. Three different types of arcing contacts are investigated in this paper. Determining the Marx generator configuration, including the values of series and parallel resistors as well as the number of series and parallel stages to obtain standard lightning impulse (LI) waveforms, is usually done in a trial and error process in the high voltage test fields of power transformer manufacturers. This practical process may take excessive time and is boring for test engineers. In this paper, a simple simulation method is proposed to model the LI test circuit of the transformer by computer, which is helpful in identifying the Marx generator set up. This method is based on modeling the LI test circuit as well as the transformer's high frequency impedance in discrete frequency domain. The measured frequency response of the transformer is used to model its high frequency characteristics. Digital signal processing methods are used to simulate the circuit and obtain waveforms. This paper proposes a novel comprehensive model of a rectifier-controlled induction motor drive for use in positive-sequence transient stability simulation (PSTSS) programs. The model is implemented to approximately capture the behavior of the point-on-wave drive model, and applied to investigate the dynamic performance of the advanced drive loads in system-level simulations. This positive-sequence drive model is systematically developed by reducing the detailed three-phase electrical and control representations into $dq$ axes positive-sequence formulations. For the positive-sequence model, the line-side rectifier is interfaced to the grid through a voltage source with separate $dq$ axes controls to regulate the active and reactive power of the drive. The machine-side inverter control system is represented based on rotor flux oriented control. The dc-link of the drive converter is implemented by employing the average model of the pulse width modulated converter, and is utilized to integrate the line-side rectifier and machine-side inverter. The proposed motor drive model is validated by comparing the performance with the electromagnetic transient point-on-wave drive model. The VAr support capability of the drive load model is investigated by incorporating the developed model into a composite load structure in PSTSS programs. Inrush currents in transformers can have very disruptive effects, such as voltage sags, false tripping of the protective devices, and mechanical stresses in the transformer windings. This paper shows that there are operating situations that may cause a transformer to draw abnormally high inrush currents. Examples include the normal operation of offline uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) systems, interruptions, voltage sags, and notching. These conditions may produce inrush-like currents of more than twice the value of the “normal” maximum inrush caused by energizing at voltage zero-crossing. For this condition, the term “phase-hop” is used in this paper. Laboratory experiments were performed on four different transformers (1 kVA) with varied characteristics and show the impact of phase-hop in the magnitude of inrush currents. The experiments are also used to validate the Electromagnetic Transients Program model used for the analysis of multiple cases. In addition, the behavior of the magnetic flux in a transformer under phase-hop is investigated and compared with different operating conditions using finite elements. The stability of power systems can largely limit the power transfer capability limit of transmission lines. The PV generator control is different from synchronous generator control. The impact of PV generator dynamics on the power transfer limit constrained by stability is not well explored in the literature. This paper focuses on improving the stability constrained power transfer capability limit of transmission lines emanating from PV generators. The PV generator is provided with dc link voltage and reactive power control and is equipped with low voltage ride through capability, voltage and frequency support functionalities. In this paper, Lyapunov function analysis based adaptive tuning laws are proposed for PV control parameters to improve the power transfer capability limit (constrained by stability) of transmission lines connecting PV generators to grid. The tuning laws are proposed for Phase Locked Loop (PLL), outer and inner control loop parameters. The proposed tuning laws have inherent robustness towards faults, changes in solar irradiation, changes in grid topology, network impedances, generation and loads in the system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated on a Single PV-Synchronous Machine system, modified IEEE-39 and IEEE-118 bus system. The performance of the proposed method is investigated considering various disturbances such as symmetrical and asymmetrical faults on transmission line, switching of a transmission line and change in solar irradiation of PV. Power system control and transient stability analysis play essential roles in secure system operation. Control of power systems typically involves highly nonlinear and complex dynamics. Most of the existing works address such problems with additional assumptions in system dynamics, leading to a requirement for a complete and general solution. This paper, therefore, proposes a novel control framework for various power system control and stability problems leveraging a learning-based approach. The proposed framework includes a two-module structure that iteratively and jointly learns the candidate Lyapunov function and control law via deep neural networks in a learning module. Meanwhile, it guides the learning procedure towards valid results satisfying Lyapunov conditions in a falsification module. The introduced termination criteria ensure provable system stability. This control framework is verified through several studies handling different types of power system control problems. The results show that the proposed framework is generalizable and can simplify the control design for complex power systems with the stability guarantee and enlarged region of attraction.
