E-beam voltage contrast inspection is a very common method for in-line detection of many key defect types for rapid yield learning during technology development. Generally, the wafer surface is charged positive, but sometimes charging the wafer surface negative makes more sense. This paper reviews four advantages that negative charging may provide. Switching from positive to negative charging is typically achieved using landing energy and/or extraction voltage. A third control knob is introduced and demonstrated using three common inspection layers, contact chemical mechanical polish (CMP), 3D NAND wordline shorts and 3D NAND wordline opens. In this article, the dissipation of predeposited surface charges on the SiC/epoxy coated insulator is investigated. Similar to Part I of this study, the analysis is carried out for the system of a pair of finger-shaped metallic electrodes placed on flat material samples and different types of material precharging are considered. Specifically, two cases based on different types of electrode–sample contacts (Cases 1 and 2, similar to Part I) are examined as well as surface charging by external corona (Case 3). It is shown that surface charge dissipation in Cases 1 and 2 takes place in two stages, whereas three stages in the charge decay process are identified in Case 3. It is shown that the rate of charge dissipation is strongly affected by the increase of the content of SiC filler in the coating material. The experimental results obtained for different cases are compared and discussed by employing results of the calculations of the electric field in the experimental setups and surface conductivities and surface trap characteristics obtained in Part I. In this article, the influence of polishing orientation on surface charge accumulation and flashover characteristics of the basin spacer in a downsized dc-gas insulated transmission line (GIL) are explored by experiments. Results show that the surface charge distribution of the polished spacers is different from the untreated one. Heteropolar charges can be observed in the polished area and outward expansion area under prestressing condition. The flashover voltages of all polished spacers are decreased. The radial polishing (RP) has the greatest impact on the flashover voltage, and the flashover voltage of the radially polished spacer is decreased by 11% under positive prestressing condition. The metal dust adsorptions of the spacers are also measured, which shows that the radially polished spacer is easier to absorb metal dust and the metal dust diffuses in the radial direction. SEM and energy spectrum scanning of different spacers show that there are more exposed alumina particles on the surface of the polished area. The microdischarge induced by alumina particles is the source of heteropolar charges. When the polished area of the spacers is repaired with epoxy paint, heteropolar charges disappear on the surface of the repaired spacer. It is confirmed that charge accumulation and flashover along the spacer surface are mainly affected by the change of surface morphology on the polished area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the mechanisms of surface charging and surface modification of epoxy spacer affecting the lifting voltage and the motion trajectory of spherical metal particles in a downsized dc gas insulated transmission line (GIL) are investigated by simulations and experiments. Results show that the lifting voltage can be predicted with much accuracy by calculating the electric field distribution under the capacitive condition. Prestressing leads to a 27% decrease of lifting voltage, which is traceable to that surface charging making a major contribution to the enhancement of electric field force. Direct fluorination is proven as an effective modification method to improve the insulation performance of epoxy spacer again. The lifting inclination is significantly inhibited after treatment because of less surface charge accumulation and more rationalized electric field distribution. The trajectory simulation results indicate that more serious surface charging can activate more metal particles to lift up and drive them to more collisions. The lifting probability and velocity of metal particles around the epoxy spacer are markedly decreased by fluorination, which is a promising treatment for dc GIL/gas insulated switchgear (GIS) application. Surface charge accumulation on silicon carbide (SiC)/epoxy coatings with different contents of SiC filler, 3, 5, 7, and 10 wt%, is investigated using flat samples of epoxy substrate. In the experiments, a pair of finger-shaped electrodes was attached to the sample’s surface using direct pressing and conductive adhesive providing two different types of contacts and, respectively, surface charging methods. The electrodes were energized by applying dc voltage for various time intervals and resulted surface charge distributions between the electrodes were measured. It was found that depending on the contact type, charging duration, and filler content, different patterns of homocharge or heterocharge appeared on the material surface. Physical reasons for the observed effects are analyzed based on the calculated electric field distributions in the experimental setup, results of the auxiliary tests on material charging in a limited air volume, and surface trap energy distributions measured by utilizing the isothermal surface potential decay (ISPD) method. In this study, a downsized direct current (dc)-gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) model is applied to investigate the surface charging and discharging characteristics of the basin-type spacer in 0.1-MPa SF6 and air. Under a low electric field, the surface charge accumulation is dominated by the bulk conduction of the spacer. As the charging voltage increases, gas ionization occurs in the localized strong electric field, taking over the dominant position. In 0.1-MPa SF6 gas, flashovers typically develop along the convex surface of the spacer under both positive and negative voltages because the homo-charge accumulation induced by brush discharges on the concave surface aggravates the electric field distortion at the convex side. In air, the dc flashovers have the polarity effect. Under the negative voltage, the flashover development is similar to that in SF6 gas. But for positive polarity, the space charge region of positive polarity intensifies the electric field ahead of the corona region, thus promoting the air-gap breakdown at the concave side of the spacer. A novel electrostatic precipitator was developed for collecting and decomposing soot in exhaust gas from combustion devices, including diesel engines. In the precipitator, the dielectric surface works as a collection electrode.As one of the key processes in this technique is charging the dielectric surface, the surface potential distributions were first investigated using glass plates as the dielectric surfaces with a positively biased ac voltage applied to discharge electrodes placed on the glass plate. Results showed that positive ions created by the breakdown of air charged the surface, and the associated intermittent voltage was sufficient for building the surface potential. The area of PM adhesion was then investigated experimentally using real exhaust gas and numerically by simulating the trajectories of the charged particles. The results showed that the uneven surface potential was the essential factor involved in the collection of particles and that the unevenness was due to the intermittent voltage applied to the glass surface. Creating and utilizing the potential unevenness along the dielectric surface for particle collection made this system unique among ESPs (electrostatic precipitator) that have been researched. Space plasmas, though tenuous, can lead to the development of large magnitude potentials on spacecraft surfaces relative to the ambient plasma in a process known as spacecraft charging. This effect poses a threat to spacecraft when surfaces charge differentially as it increases the risk of electrical arcing. Spacecraft engineers have primarily focused on the mitigation of charging and not its exploitation. The potentials and current collected by the spacecraft present an opportunity to harvest power from the space environment. Although the current density and floating potential due to incident charged species in the orbit-motion-limited model are identical for all spacecraft surfaces with similar geometries, material property differences between surfaces or charge control devices break the symmetry and allow for net current to flow. Differences in the secondary electron yield, in particular, produce strong differences in floating potential even when the spacecraft is eclipsed or far from the sun. This article presents a theory for computing the power available to harvest from spacecraft charging given the parameters of ambient space plasmas and surface material properties. Given a load connecting two differentially charged surfaces, optimal power is harvested by matching the load resistance to the input plasma impedance. While this holds for any model of the ambient plasma, the orbit-motion-limited theory yields closed-form solutions to the charging equations for spherical and planar surfaces. These solutions provide an upper bound on generated power that scales with the density and temperature of the cold electron population. An environment-specific optimal anode-to-cathode area ratio exists that minimizes the input impedance to the harvesting circuit. Deployable anodes are recommended to satisfy this condition and increase the amount of power harvested. The superconducting magnet, as a main component of the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER), is critical to the ITER's long-term stability. Polyimide (PI) not only has excellent electrical properties at cryogenic temperature, but also has strong irradiation resistance, which has become the common choice of insulating materials for the superconducting magnet. Due to the pulsed power supply used in the ITER, PI is facing the dual challenges of cryogenic temperature and pulsed voltage. The surface charge characteristics of irradiated PI film by different doses of electron beam were studied in this paper. The surface charging is completed under the pulse voltage with 40% relative humidity. The partial discharge initial voltage (PDIV) and breakdown voltage in liquid nitrogen (LN2) were measured by electrostatic voltmeter. The findings indicate that proper irradiation can help to minimize charge accumulation and decrease the trap level. At the same time, the PDIV and breakdown voltage can be increased by irradiation. This article presents the derivation of semianalytic solutions to a new 1-D photoelectron sheath model near the lunar surface. The plasma species include the cold solar wind protons, drifting Maxwellian solar wind electrons, and Maxwellian photoelectrons emitted from the surface. The semianalytic model is then numerically solved to obtain profiles of quantities of interest as functions of the vertical distance from the surface. A fully-kinetic 3-D finite-difference (FD) particle-in-cell (PIC) code is then utilized to simulate the 1-D photoelectron sheath and the results agree well with the numerical solution to the semianalytic model. A $\kappa $ -distribution for solar wind electrons is also implemented to the FD-PIC code to compare with the Maxwellian distribution. Results show that photoelectron sheath may reach as high as close to 100 m above the illuminated flat lunar surface near the terminator region and up to about 50 m near the equator region. Our results show that under average solar wind condition, the photoelectron sheath profiles obtained with Maxwellian and $\kappa $ -distribution (with $\kappa = 4.5$) are very close for 1-D numerical results. In this paper, a novel modification method for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) membranes is proposed based on surface-grafting technology. The experimental results show that, compared with the pristine samples, the surface-grafted films show better breakdown strength under different voltage stress especially at higher temperatures (85 °C). The DC withstand strength of the surface-grafted PP membranes grows by 42.7% from 386.4 to 551.2 kV/mm. The breakdown strength climbs by 63.5% from 305.9 to 500.2 kV/mm under DC superimposed pulse voltage. Under DC superimposed harmonic stress, the breakdown strength is increased from 175.6 to 587.4 kV/mm by 234%. The influence of surface modification on charge transmission behavior is proposed based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation. Free metal particle can affect surface charge accumulation on epoxy insulator installed in gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) or gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), which results in reduction of surface flashover voltage thus threatening the safe operation of the power equipment. This article reports on the charge accumulation behavior on a real size epoxy insulator with bouncing metal particle under DC voltage. A coaxial electrode system was designed for the test under −30 kV, a metal particle-launching system was employed to inject the bouncing linear particle to the insulator surface. The charge distribution was measured by a Kelvin-type probe, and the influence of the particle on the charge accumulation was analyzed with the help of electric field simulation. The results showed that there were mainly two moving patterns of the bouncing particle: the charges were accumulated with speckle shape and the charged particle that hit the edge of electrode had more remarkable influence on the charge accumulation than other particles. An engineering approach to the computational prediction of surface charging during dielectric tests of medium voltage devices is presented. It is based on a formulation of the saturation charge boundary condition applied to an iteratively estimated area on the insulation surface. The simulation procedure is explained for a simple case study including a rod electrode, shaped barrier, and grounded enclosure. Surface charge accumulation on epoxy insulator installed in gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) and gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) has been recognized as a crucial factor for electric field distortion that results in the reduction of surface flashover voltage. This article reports on the gaseous ionization dependence of the charge accumulation pattern on a real-size epoxy insulator with multiarc surface profile by using various gas atmospheres. A coaxial electrode system was designed to investigate the charging behavior under dc voltages of −10, −20, and −30 kV. The insulator and electrodes were placed in a metal-enclosed test chamber, which was filled with 0.1 MPa air or 0.4 MPa SF6/N2 mixture to estimate the influence of the gas atmosphere on the charge accumulation behavior by a Kelvin-type probe. The accumulation mechanism and the electric field distortion induced by the charges were demonstrated based on numerical simulation. The results indicated that positive charges were accumulated in the shape of speckle on insulator surface in air, whereas both positive and negative charges were accumulated in SF6/N2 mixture and positive charge speckles appeared in SF6/N2 mixture only when the voltage raised up to −30 kV. It is considered that the charge accumulation behavior is determined by the competition result among the bulk, the gas and the surface conductions. As compared with the case in air, gaseous ionization in SF6/N2 mixture is more difficult to occur, which leads to the obvious difference in the charge accumulation pattern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for DC gas-insulated switchgear/gas-insulated transmission line (GIS/GIL) becomes more and more urgent in recent years owing to the rapid development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Insulators in DC GIS/GIL could easily accumulate a large number of charges on its surface during long-term operation, which might lead to overstressing of polymeric insulation or surface flashover. Therefore, it is of great significance to propose an effective method for dissipating extra surface charges. However, achieving charge dissipation without opening the tank is still a great challenge to SFC6-insulated equipment for a long time. In this paper, a novel method, which is named X-ray based non-contact charge dissipation method (XNCDM) for insulators in SF6-insulated equipment, is proposed. The effects of X-ray irradiation on the charges dissipation and the influences of irradiation dose were experimentally investigated in SF6. The mechanisms underlying are discussed in detail. Results show that surface charges on the insulator can be almost completely dissipated after short-time X-ray irradiation with enough dose, owing to the significant enhancement of electric conduction along the insulator surface and charge neutralization by gas ions near the gas-solid interface. This paper provides a novel technique for realizing rapid surface charge dissipation on the insulator, which is of great significance for a variety of engineering applications of DC GIS/GIL. Charges due to ionization at conductors at low electric field serves as the main source of charge carriers that is responsible for surface charge enhancement, especially for hetero-polar charges on the convex surface side of spacers inside DC gas-insulated transmission lines (GILs). In this paper, simulation results of charge generation processes from gas side, including natural ionization, micro-discharge and field emission, are presented. The results show that for the case where the electric field strength is -6.548 kV/mm and the gas pressure is 0.4 Mpa, when conductor roughness Ra is lower than 24.16 µm, natural radiation ionization is the main cause of the dark current. When Ra is between 24.16 µm and 188.59 µm, the dark current is dominated by micro-discharge. The Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) field emission occurs when Ra exceeds 188.59 µm. Considering the roughness of the conductor in the actual GIL, the increase in the dark current due to local roughness is mainly due to micro-discharge rather than F-N field emission. The results in this paper provide an important part for further determining of conductor surface conditions in high voltage direct current (HVDC) GILs and serve as an important reference for completion of the surface charging model of spacers under DC. In this paper, the transient process of negative DC corona generated with needle to plane electrode covered by polymer film is investigated by numerical simulation considering air plasma chemistry. The variation in plasma species in corona discharge and the transient process of charge accumulation on the film are examined. Moreover, the electric field and the mean electron energy distribution on the sample surface are discussed. Obtained results indicate that during the corona process, O 2 +, O 4 + and N 4 + are the dominant positive ions, O 2 − and O are the main negative ion and the neutral particle, respectively. The charge accumulation region expands along the radial direction and the charge density increases gradually. In addition, the discharge channel shape is changed from column to cone with time, which is attributed to the electric field modification achieved by the accumulated charges. In 2000 ns, the mean electron energy distribution on the polymer surface varies between 2.1 and 5.8 eV and finally stabilizes to 3.7 eV, thus the electrons can overcome the barrier at gas-solid interface and become injected into the polymer bulk. Surface charge accumulation on epoxy insulator installed in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) or gas insulated transmission line (GIL) has been recognized as an important factor for electric field distortion that results in reduction of surface flashover voltage. This paper reports on surface charge accumulation behavior on a actual epoxy insulator for 100 kV GIL prototype with multi-arc surface profile. A coaxial electrode system is used to investigate the charging behavior under DC voltages with metal particles positioned at various positions of the surface so as to estimate its influence on the charge accumulation behavior using a Kelvin type probe. The results show that positive charges are accumulated mainly on the nonplanar region around the high voltage electrode in the shape of speckles, and the average charge distribution along the radial direction presented a double-peak feature. Moreover, the charge accumulation is enhanced by metal particles contacting to the grounded electrode. Using a numerical simulation method, it is suggested that the charge accumulation is mainly determined by gaseous ionization which is enhanced by the metal particle induced electric field distortion. The accumulation of surface charges is a crucial challenge, especially for HVDC components. Accumulated surface charges can change the electric field distribution and generate weak points, especially in case of superimposed transient voltages and, therefore lower the performance e.g. of insulators. Hence, an accurate measurement of the surface potential and so the surface charges is necessary to optimize these components. Commonly, the surface potential is measured with an electrostatic voltmeter. In this study a procedure for determining the spatial impulse response of a compensating electrostatic voltmeter depending on only the surface to probe distance is presented. Based on the performed measurements a mathematical model is developed to describe the capacitive influence and significance of the local surface potential on the measurement result. The actual measurement value is a weighted and averaged value given by the actual position and its surrounding, which is also confirmed by numerical simulations. The performed procedure enables high accuracy of the measurement of surface potentials and so of surface charges using different types of electrostatic voltmeters and shows the limitation of the measurement procedure. When designing spacecraft with electric propulsion (EP) devices, it is important to assess spacecraft integration to ensure that the important components are not subject to significant sputtering by high-energy ions. In addition to the EP device and its plume, surface charging of spacecraft has to be modeled properly, as surface potential can directly affect the sputtering rate. Three surface charging models are incorporated into the spacecraft module of the numerical simulation framework–Thermophysics Universal Research Framework (TURF), and these include: 1) dielectric; 2) conductive; and 3) charge propagation models. The charge propagation model has been upgraded to solve the surface charge distribution implicitly, allowing a wide range of electrical conductivity values without causing the simulation to become unstable. Each of the charging models is verified against a simple problem where an analytical solution can be determined. Then, the coupling of the surface charging model and a hybrid particle/fluid model is tested in a more complex problem, where the floating potential on a sphere immersed in plasma is to be obtained. Finally, the surface charging model in an EP plume simulation is demonstrated. These problems are multiscale in that the charging model has to resolve an electron timescale (i.e., plasma oscillation) while the particle time step has to be orders of magnitude larger than the electron timescale in order to maintain a long enough sampling window for the ion current to effectively reduce the statistical noise. Dopant mapping using secondary electrons (SEs) in the scanning helium ion microscope is correlated with the surface charge distributions and electron inelastic mean free path. Numerical results show that the doping contrast is mainly a function of bulk built-in voltages modified by surface band-bending effects within a 3-nm-thick surface layer. The strong surface work function sensitivity of the SE yield and highly suppressed SE2/SE1 ratio militate the higher specificity to acceptors (donors), with surface charging constraining the threshold sensitivity to around 1017 cm−3 in thicker p-layers, compared to ~1015 cm−3 commonly attainable in the scanning electron microscope. To represent the time spent by space materials on ground before launch, the measurement of secondary electron emission properties is performed after long duration exposure to ambient atmosphere and humidity. The observed change with respect to pristine samples has an impact on the estimation of worst case surface charging levels in geostationary orbit, especially for a spacecraft in eclipse. This paper presents a simulation study of the dynamics of dust grains around a small asteroid. Plasma-asteroid interactions and asteroid charging are obtained from fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. Dust transport simulation takes into account the electrostatic force, solar radiation pressure, and the gravitational force. Both the result derived from laboratory measurements of regolith surface charging and the single dust charging model are considered for dust charging. For the small asteroid considered in this paper, we find that dust transport is mostly determined by the competition between the electrostatic force and the solar pressure and dust distribution is sensitive to both dust charging and dust grain size. For dust grains in the tens of micrometer size range, the solar radiation pressure dominates dust transport at small dust charge-to-mass ratio, whereas the electrostatic force dictates dust transport at large dust charge-to-mass ratio. High-level surface-charging events are frequently observed on spacecrafts in aurora region. Besides the sunlit condition, two major factors causing charging events are the ambient plasma density and the precipitating electron flux. For the first factor, when the ambient plasma density is relatively low due to weak solar UV output during solar minimum, more surface-charging events are reported to occur for polar satellite. Moreover, the increased energetic electron precipitation during high geomagnetic activities in solar cycle decent years, may also contribute to the charging events. To evaluate these two factors comprehensively, we present a statistical survey of over 2000 surface charging events recorded by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites over one solar cycle. The relationship between charging events and Kp index, F10.7 index, and monthly average sunspot number is investigated. It is shown that the occurrence frequency of charging events is larger at descending years of solar cycle. In addition, the conditional probabilities of the charging events increase as Kp increase. There is a threshold for Kp index, under which most of the charging events cannot occur, and this threshold grows as F10.7 increases. Finally, it is demonstrated that the surface charging potential is strongly correlated with the Kp index. Although there is no obvious correlation between the surface charging potential and F10.7 index, we still observe a decreasing trend of the surface potential range as F10.7 increases. This paper presents a 3-D, fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation study of plasma charging for small, irregularly shaped, composite asteroids in the solar wind. Three types of asteroid internal structures are considered: 1) a homogeneous composition of regolith; 2) a single hard rock; and 3) a composite of hard rock core covered with a regolith outer layer. The simulation model resolves the plasma flow field, asteroid surface differential charging, and asteroid internal electric field self-consistently. The results show that while the ambient plasma condition and surface property determine surface charging, the internal composition substantially affects the subsurface electric field inside an asteroid. We compare magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation results with observations from the Michibiki satellite, which is on the quasi-zenith orbit (QZO), to estimate the risk of surface charging. Surface charging results from plasma injection related to substorms. We simulated some charging events and compared the magnetic field variations causing the plasma injection. However, the magnetic field variations of simulation results tend to deviate from observations on QZO under a disturbed geomagnetic condition. We consider that the deviation under a disturbed geomagnetic condition is due to ring current enhancement in the inner magnetosphere. To produce the magnetic field variation due to ring current, we added an inner magnetospheric pressure model to the MHD simulation, which produces the ring current by artificially increasing the pressure in the inner magnetosphere. Then, we investigated the magnetic field variation causing the plasma injection. As a result, we found that the magnetic field variation causing plasma injection is reproduced in the simulation when we add the inner pressure model to the MHD simulation. This result suggests that the change in the magnetic field due to ring current in the inner magnetosphere affects the magnetic field variation of the plasma injection caused by nightside reconnection. The dynamic behavior of surface charging on spacers in DC-GILs can be influenced by multi-factors including the non-uniform distributed electric field as well as the time-varying temperature gradient. In this paper, the time-varying effect of surface charging phenomenon on spacers is studied and a time-varying mathematical model is established, based on the influence of temperature and electric field on the ion mobility at the gas phase and the bulk conductivity in the solid phase. The results verify that the bulk conductivity can be greatly influenced by temperature, which leads to an increase in the surface charge density on the spacer. This allows the surface charge accumulation to stabilize more quickly. However, the ion mobility from the gas phase is less affected by temperature. When the non-uniform distributed electric field changes from 1.3 to 6.4 kV/mm, ion mobility is less influenced and the surface charge density on the spacer varies slightly. Streamer behaviour near dielectric surfaces is an important characteristic of air-solid electrical insulation systems. Accurate predictions are important for dielectric design, but dynamic aspects such as surface charging during streamer propagation are not well understood. A drift-diffusion model is used here to simulate positive streamer behaviour in non-uniform fields. The 2D-planar simulation domain includes air gaps between a tip of a HV electrode and a dielectric barrier laying on a grounded plane. The resulting surface charge distributions approach saturation charge conditions, i.e. zero normal electric field on the air side of the boundary. Such charging behaviour was also reported in lightning impulse (LI) experiments. The simulations are also aligned with empirical streamer propagation range estimates. It is demonstrated that saturation charge levels are reachable within a few tens of nanoseconds of exposure to positive streamer channels. Ion drift is shown to be the dominating mechanism of surface charging during positive streamer propagation, although photoemission also plays an important role. Discharge suppression by streamer-deposited surface charge is also demonstrated. Furthermore, the influence of back discharges at the LI tail on the surface charge distribution is shown. Simulating realistic streamer surface charging behaviour with arbitrary electrode and dielectric shapes is an important step toward first principles discharge prediction models. Surface charge accumulation on polymer insulating material has been recognized as an important factor for electric field distortion that results in reduction of surface flashover voltage. This paper reports on the charge accumulation behavior between a pair of finger-shaped electrodes on epoxy/Al2O3 nanocomposites under dc voltage superimposed by repetitive pulses. The charge distribution was measured by means of an electrostatic voltmeter, from which the average charge density could be calculated. Effects of dc voltage, nanofiller content, and pulse voltage on charge accumulation behavior were investigated. Obtained results showed that with the increase in the filler content from 0 wt% to 5 wt%, the average charge density increased initially then appeared to decrease. The superposition of repetitive pulses on dc voltage led to a remarkable growth in charge accumulation as compared with that when only dc voltage was applied. It is suggested that the charges are originated from local gaseous ionization and/or electrode injection, which is determined by the combined voltage. The charge density is dependent upon the surface trap, which is affected by nanofiller content. Surface charge accumulation on epoxy based nanocomposites under DC stress with and without the presence of a magnetic field was investigated in this work. Two mm-thick sheet samples were prepared by adding 60 nm-Al 2 O 3 particles into epoxy with filler content of 1 to 5 wt%. A pair of finger-shaped electrodes was employed to introduce electric charges onto the sample surface under DC stress of ±5 and ±10 kV. The magnetic field was established by using a pair of permanent magnets, by which a magnetic flux density of 100 and 180 mT was achieved. Surface charge between the electrodes was measured by means of a Kelvin type electrostatic voltmeter, and the influence of nano-filler content and magnetic flux density on charge distribution as well as charge density was estimated. The results indicate that increasing nano-filler content from 0 to 5 wt%, the average charge density increased initially then decreased. The presence of a magnetic field results in a deflection of charge profile as compared with that formed without a magnetic field. The charge density increased as the magnetic flux density increased from 0 to 180 mT. It is suggested that the charge trajectory close to high voltage electrode varies by the combined electric-magnetic force, by which electric field recovery in such a region is facilitated thus more charges are encouraged to accumulate on the surface. Superconducting magnet is one of the core components of international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER). Due to the harsh operating environment, for the sake of ensuring the stable operation of the superconducting magnet, the superconducting magnet insulation is required to have excellent electrical and irradiation resistance. However, pure epoxy resin is difficult to adapt to the harsh environment in the ITER, so it needs to be modified to improve its insulation performance. In this paper, the epoxy/AlN nanocomposites with 1 wt% filler content of AlN nanoparticles were prepared, and the dispersion of nanoparticles was observed. High-energy electron beam was used to treat nanocomposites with the dose of 300, 500, and 700 kGy. The relative permittivity and conductivity of the nanocomposites after irradiation were tested. In addition, the data of surface potential were measured after surface charging for analyzing the dynamic behavior of surface charge and calculating the trap distribution of the nanocomposites with various irradiation doses. The flashover voltage of the nanocomposites influenced by irradiation in LN2 was also analyzed. Surface charge accumulation on the insulator surface and the resulting flashover voltage reduction are considered the primary factors to hinder the large-scale use of HVDC system, especially the gas-insulated system. In this study, Buckminster-fullerene C60 of different loadings is introduced into epoxy resin for the purpose of restricting the mobility of charge carriers within the material and thus suppressing the charge accumulation on the insulator surface under dc voltage. Experimental results have shown that with the addition of tiny amount of fullerene C60 into epoxy, the conductivity of the composites decreases significantly with the loading and reaches its minimum around 100∼200 ppm, which can be as low as 20% that of neat epoxy. By using the Kelvin-probe method and an advanced inversion algorithm, the surface charge distribution on the fullerene-filled epoxy resin insulators with different filler loadings are obtained. It is observed that the addition of 200 ppm fullerene C60 into epoxy resin can effectively suppress the charge accumulation on the insulator surface. The interfacial polarization model is adopted to interpret the mechanism of surface charge accumulation, which shows that reducing the bulk conductivity of the insulator can effectively suppress the surface charging. Surface charge accumulation of polymer insulating materials is harmful to the safe operation of electrical equipment, especially under DC electric field excitation. In order to ensure the safety and stable operation of HVDC power system such as Gas-insulated transmission line, it is necessary to understand the influence of the surface charge on the flashover and improve the surface charge dynamic characteristics. In this paper, Epoxy resin (EP) is deposited by SiOx thin films with different plasma treatment conditions. The flashover voltages are measured with and without surface charges. The results show that the flashover occurs at lower voltage due to the accumulated charges on the EP surface. In particular, the surface charge with the same polarity of flashover discharge can reduce the surface flashover voltage significantly. Moreover, the charge decay rate is increased up to 90% by plasma treatment of 3 min, corresponding flashover voltage is increased. In addition, the flashover voltages of samples during the surface charge dissipation are obtained. A spacer is a challenging part of high voltage direct current (HVDC) gas-insulated substations and gas-insulated transmission lines. This paper proposes a novel design of HVDC spacers by self-adaptively controlling the surface charge. The paper briefly reviews dielectric modification methods that aim to limit surface charge accumulation. A novel design of HVDC spacer is introduced that is based on the concept of adaptively controlling surface charges using nonlinear materials, and its surface charge control and regulation abilities are investigated. The surface charge accumulation and decay properties of the novel spacer are compared to a downsized spacer. The results show that the proposed model spacer can restrict surface charge accumulation in the charge adaptive control region of the spacer. Doping the nonlinear material can facilitate surface charge decay in the charge adaptive control region when the electric field exceeds a threshold. Laser-ablated template and fluoroalkyl silane modified composite coatings are used to prepare a micro- and nano-structure on silicone rubber surfaces. By testing the surface potential accumulation and dissipation process, we assess the suppression of surface charge on superhydrophobic silicone rubber. The surface physicochemical properties and resistivity are examined. The electron and hole trap distribution are analysed using isothermal current decay theory. Peak density of traps associated with the superhydrophobic surfaces are found to be promoted to lower energy levels relative to unmodified silicone. Surface micro-structure increases trap density and reduce trap depth; nano coatings are shown to further reduce surface trap depth. The improvements shown to suppress surface charge accumulation is beneficial to a range of electrical industries and helps mitigate surface flashover on insulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The surface charges that accumulate on polypropylene (PP) film can induce electrical field distortion and surface flashover, which accelerate the electrical aging of a capacitor. This paper investigated the effect of combined voltage on the surface charge behaviors and flashover voltage and a modification method to inhibit the accumulation of surface charge. The carrier mobility in different conditions was calculated using a surface potential decay process to analyze the transportation of surface charges. Samples that were fluorinated for 15, 30, 45 and 60 min and unfluorinated samples were prepared prior to experiments. The samples were corona charged with a pair of needle-plate electrodes by DC voltage and a combination of DC voltage and pulse voltage. The flashover experiments were performed under DC voltage, pulse voltage and superimposed voltage in atmospheric air. The results indicate that the maximum carrier mobility and maximum flashover voltage can be obtained when the samples are surface modified for 45 min. The surface charge density decreases with an increase in the carrier mobility under DC voltage. Under a combination of DC voltage and pulse voltage, the initial surface charge density is influenced by both the carrier mobility and the pulse voltage. The results suggest that surface modification for a certain time can significantly inhibit the surface charge accumulation, improve the carrier mobility and increase the flashover voltage. Recent data from the floating potential measurement unit (FPMU) on board the International Space Station have revealed floating potential transients that occur during certain high-voltage solar array operations. These transients are not well understood and are not predicted by the existing spacecraft–plasma interaction models. Herein, a new model is developed, which incorporates the important plasma interactions with dielectric surfaces that are believed to be the cause of these transients. The output of the preliminary model is compared to FPMU data, and parametric studies are performed in order to study the dependence of these transients on plasma characteristics and array operations. The model shows good agreement with FPMU data and indicates that the shape of the transient events is largely dependent on plasma density, temperature, array turn-ON time, and array orientation. Surface charge accumulated on insulators plays an important role in flashover process in vacuum, which has not yet been fully understood. In this paper, charging behaviors on insulator surface were experimentally examined under negative DC and impulse voltage. For the case of DC voltage, two charging stages were observed, i.e., the area near cathode was at first negatively charged under lower voltage (stage I) and then followed by a positively charged cathode-anode surface (stage II). Surface charging at stage I is considered to be caused by Schottky injection of homo-charges from electrode into sample surface layer. While at stage II secondary electron emission (SEE) process is responsible to the positively charged anode-cathode surface. However, charging at stage I is quite sensitive to pre-stress process, as well as the electrode-insulator interface conditions. The ongoing injection of electrons from cathode can lead to gradually decreasing in surface charge accumulation as the voltage duration increases. For the case of impulse voltage, Schottky injection of homo-charges has little influence on surface charging as the time is too short for charge injection and migration in surface layer. The SEE process will govern surface charging due to its extremely fast establishment process. A good linear relationship is obtained between saturated surface charge density and applied voltage, which is generally consistent with the numerical calculation result based on secondary electron emission avalanche theory. At last, it is confirmed that the ionization of desorbed gas from insulator surface and subsequent neutralization of electrons with positive surface charge is the main cause to eliminate surface charge in flashover. The Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment observes surface charge accumulation under DC or AC voltage in real operation, which could distort the electric field and incur flashover eventually. With a 3D high-resolution surface charge measurement system established on actual 220 kV GIS basin insulator, the present research captured the surface charge distribution characteristics of the insulator under DC and AC voltage through high-precision probe scanning on the insulator surface. The test results show that: 1) Surface charge demonstrates obvious polarity effect under DC voltage. Under positive DC voltage, there accumulated mainly positive surface charges. Under negative DC voltage, the polarity of accumulated surface charges is all negative. Regardless of charge polarities, the surface charge density increases as the voltage amplitudes mounts and the voltage application duration prolongs. 2) Surface charge accumulation also takes place under AC voltage application. All charges are negative and distribute in a uniformed manner but in smaller density comparing to the DC scenario. As the voltage amplitudes increase, the surface charge density first increases, then decreases and finally reaches a near saturation state. As voltage application goes on, the surface charge accumulation becomes more obvious. Above all, the insulation issues in relation to surface charge accumulation require due attention in the application and maintenance of GIS equipment, and the present research attempts to provide useful reference for the optimal design of GIS/GIL insulators. Polyimide (PI) films have excellent electrical, mechanical and thermal properties in aspect of resisting corona, aging and radiation. However, the pulse voltage combined with dc voltage often causes concentration of local electrical field, which makes the surface charge behaviors more complex and threatens the system. As a means of surface treatment, direct fluorination has been proved as an effective way to improve the polymer properties, without compositing the bulk characteristics. Therefore, this paper intends to reveal the effects of fluorination on surface charge coupling behaviors of the PI films under dc and pulse voltage combination. The PI samples fluorinated for 0, 15, 45 and 60 min were obtained. Surface corona discharging was stressed under the combination of dc and pulse voltage. The surface charge accumulation, decay and distribution were measured coupled with an analysis of trap distribution. The results show the surface charge dynamic behaviors are strongly correlated with the fluorination time, pulse voltage amplitude and polarities of the dc and pulse voltage combination. The trap distribution results imply that the effect of fluorination and charging condition attribute to the change of trap depth and amount. Epoxy resin is widely used in disc-type spacers of gas insulated switchgear (GIS). Surface flashover related to the existence of surface charge often occurs on the spacer, which is a great threat to the application of GIS and the safety of entire grid. Moreover, the influences on surface charge under pulse voltage produced by switch overvoltage, accompanying with the AC voltage, are still unclear. In order to research the comprehensive effect of AC and pulse voltage on surface charge, in this paper, epoxy resin sample was charged by a corona discharge system and the charge distribution was measured by an electrostatic voltmeter. The results are obtained from the research of different pulse amplitudes, pulse numbers and pulse polarities. The surface potential is a negative value after AC voltage applied for a period of time. When AC and negative pulse voltage are applied, smaller pulse voltage would push the original negative charges away. As a result, initial negative surface potential decreases. But bigger pulse voltage could increase the charge accumulation. When the pulse polarity becomes positive, surface potential at the sample center will be positive value at the beginning and then it gradually changes from positive to negative potential. In addition, the influence on surface charge decay rate will be enhanced with the increase of pulse number under the same pulse voltage. However, the pulse voltage from the converter often causes overvoltage and localized high electrical field in the insulation system. During applying the pulse voltage, charges accumulate on the surface of the insulator, which could affect the dielectric property and cause the breakdown of insulation. Direct fluorination is a method to modify the surface layer of the polymers without changing the bulk properties. As a result of the fluorination, hydrogen atoms are replaced by the fluorine atoms and the component of the polymer surface is changed, which can influence the surface charge accumulation and affect the electrical properties. The experiment in this paper was focused on the effect of pulse duration and pulse number on surface charge of the polyimide films. The polyimide films with the fluorination time of 0, 15, 45 and 60 min were prepared. Surface charging was performed by corona discharging using repetitive pulse power at the temperature of 20 °C with the relative humidity of ~15%. The repetition frequency was 1 kHz and the pulse duration was 50, 110 and 210 μs, respectively. The surface charge decay was measured using a specific probe coupled with an electrostatic voltmeter. In the bridged vacuum gaps, the secondary electron emission avalanche (SEEA) occurring along the surface of solid insulator and the resultant surface charging play a crucial role in the progress of surface discharge. In order to sophisticate the insulation design of high voltage vacuum devices, analysis and control of SEEA charging are of importance. Boersh et al. have proposed a boundary condition on the surface of an insulator to solve the charge distribution at an equilibrium state of SEEA charging. The boundary condition can be easily adopted for analyzing two dimensional SEEA charge distributions. However, the above condition by Boersh et al. cannot be applied in the case of three dimensional distributions. In this paper, the authors newly developed the boundary condition for three dimensional applications and created a numerical simulation code for analyzing three dimensional SEEA charge distributions. Two types of insulator were examined in this study; one was a solid cylinder and the other a hollow cylinder. In the case of the solid cylinder, electric field strength on the cathode was calculated and compared with the measurement. On the other hand, in the case of the hollow cylinder, the calculated result was compared with the charge distribution experimentally obtained by a movable electrostatic probe system. These calculation and measurement results have shown reasonable agreement and we have validated the newly developed numerical simulation method for three dimensional SEEA charge distributions. Silicone rubber (SiR), as a basic insulating material, is widely used in insulators for HVDC transmission lines. The prominent characteristics of the SiR coating are the hydrophobicity and the hydrophobicity recovery, which can suppress the development of leakage currents and dry-band discharges, and prevent the flashover incidents. Fluorination is a method to change the chemical component of the surface layer of polymers, which could induce the corresponding change in hydrophobicity and some electrical properties, thus influencing the dc surface flashover characteristics. Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) SiR samples were fluorinated in a stainless reaction vessel at about 298K (25°C) using a F2/N2 mixture with 12% F2 by volume and 0.05 MPa (500 mbar) for respectively 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes. The hydrophobicity of samples with different fluorination time was measured by the static contact angle tests after corona aging. The variation of hydrophobicity with the lapse of time was recorded. Dc flashover tests in different conditions were carried out between two plane electrodes on top of the material sample. The flashover voltage was found to be associated with the surface hydrophobicity status of samples. Obtained results showed the effects of the fluorination on the surface charge, hydrophobicity performance and dc flashover voltage. It is suggested that the appropriate fluorination can improve surface hydrophobicity and suppress surface charge accumulation, thus raising the dc flashover voltage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a comparison of different techniques for SiC high-voltage devices is performed using numerical simulations. In particular, the method of counter doping (CD) introduced in the junction termination extension (JTE) region to create a multizone termination effect is investigated. Simulation shows that compared with the other edge termination techniques, CD-JTE greatly reduces the sensitivity of breakdown voltage (BV) to JTE doses and surface charges. The multizone CD-JTE with outer rings shows that for a 30- \mu m thick epi-layer, 90% of the theoretical BV is achievable with a wide tolerance of 11\,\times \,10^{\mathrm {12}} /cm ^{2} to the JTE dose and 85% of the theoretical BV with an increased tolerance of 6.19\times 10^\mathrm 12 /cm ^2 to the positive surface charges, both superior to other JTE structures investigated in this paper. This paper tries to study the effect of fluorination time on surface charge accumulation and decay of room temperature vulcanized (RTV) SiR. The samples were fluorinated in a laboratory vessel at 298 K (25 °C) using a F2/N2 mixture with 12% F2 by volume at 0.05 MPa (500 mbar) for 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes. The sample surface chemical composition was analyzed by means of ATR-IR. The behavior of surface potential under dc voltage was recorded at room temperature with a relative humidity of ~ 40%. Obtained results show a dependence of the surface potential and the dissipation time upon the fluorination time, varying with the charging time. Epoxy is widely used in electronic and electrical devices because of its excellent insulation properties. The addition of nanoparticles to epoxy could change the material structure and then charge behaviors are altered as a consequence. The accumulation of surface charge may cause electric field distortion, which would lead to surface flashover. In this paper, the samples were made by dispersing nano-scale boron nitride (BN) particles in Epoxy with the weight ratios of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt%. The samples were charged by a dc corona triode system using needle-plate electrodes. The distribution of charges was measured with an electrostatic voltmeter and the effect of nanoparticles on charge accumulation and decay behavior was studied. A flashover test was carried out under a dc stress between two finger-type electrodes. The effect of nanoparticles on flashover characteristics and the relation between surface charging and surface flashover were also investigated. The results showed that the traps between nanoparticles and the polymer, which were introduced by the added nanoparticles, could cause surface charge accumulation. The development of electric fields in gas-solid insulation systems under dc voltage stress goes hand in hand with the accumulation and decay of charges on dielectric interfaces. The charge transport through the solid insulator and the gas is determined by the electric properties of the involved insulating materials. Therefore, the nonlinearly field-dependent volume conductivity of a gas, resulting from a constant charge generation rate by natural ionization has to be considered. The transient field distribution on insulators under dc voltage is investigated theoretically, using a gas model, which takes into account the physical characteristics of insulating gases like air and SF6 as well as the effects resulting from electron emission from the electrodes. The influence of the ion pair generation rate in the gas, the electric field strength, and the volume and surface conductivity of the solid insulating material on the development of the electric field is investigated on cylindrical and conical insulators which are typical for gas insulated systems. Results of calculations using the gas model are compared to simulations assuming constant gas conductivity.
