Morris and Adams had not only common wardrobes and generational ties, they also have some other common characteristics as their love of people, their old black Nikons and their willingness to embrace their emotion and use the force of it to tell a good story. They had a spirit, a sheer will power, a psychological drive that fueled within them a relentless, unquenchable, life-long pursuit for the picture, on any story and on any given day. Both knew well the absolute power of a perfect photograph, one that tells everything in an instant.

Carolyn Cole of the Los Angeles Times has been named the POYi Newspaper Photographer of the Year, the contest's top honor in the newspaper division, and James Nachtwey of VII / TIME was named POYi Magazine Photographer of the Year by the Missouri School of Journalism in the 61st annual competition in Columbia, Missouri. Nachtwey's magazine win is an unprecedented eighth victory for the veteran photojournalist. His portfolio included stories about the Iraq war, with pictures that represent the points of view of both sides. Jacob Ehrbahn, a photographer with the Danish paper Politiken, received second place newspaper POYi. His portfolio contained a story about homeless children in Mongolia. Mark Zaleski, a photographer at the Press-Enterprise (Riverside, California) received third place newspaper POYi. His portfolio contained stories about an obese boy, another about the California wildfires and an essay on a morgue. Bryan Patrick, a photographer with The Sacramento Bee, won an Award of Excellence for his portfolio.
