Considered precursors of ḥadīth criticism, the opinions of ʿAlī b. ʿAbdallāh b. Jaʿfar al-Madīnī (161–234/778–849), extensively cited by later ḥadīth scholars, have given considerable weight to the credibility of a ḥadīth and its transmitters. Despite his centrality to the science of ḥadīth, there is not a single monograph dedicated to him and his intellectual output in the scholarly literature in English. This article presents a critical reconstruction of his life. Although the biographical sources on ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī are copious, the earliest details, especially on evaluation of his scholarly accomplishment, are often tendentious and contradictory. There is also a controversy related to his submission to the miḥna. Analysis of these biographical reports intimates that the questioning voices mainly came from the early Ḥanbalī circle, while other scholars, comprising Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn's disciples and non-Baghdadis, especially of Basran and Khurasani origins, tended to defend ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī. This paper argues that ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī's unfaltering status as a leading ḥadīth critic can be attributed to the geographical outreach of his supporters, whose overall attitude towards the createdness of the Qurʾān is more tolerant compared with that of the Ḥanbalīs. More importantly, ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī's contribution to the formation of ḥadīth criticism as a discipline was realized from early on, which is manifest in his knowledge of ʿilm al-rijāl and mastery of ʿilal al-ḥadīth. His theorization of ḥadīth transmission through the framework of the madār al-isnād also laid the epistemological foundation for the following ḥadīth critics in their formulation of the disciplinary history. By the time Joseph Morgan died (ca. 1750), he had lived longer in, and written more about, North Africa than any other Briton. This paper examines his first published work after his return to England ca. 1720: a translation of the life of the Prophet Muḥammad which appeared in London in 1723 and 1725. While there had been previous biographies of the Prophet in English, Morgan's was the first that was completely based on an account by a Muslim Andalusian author, Mohamed Rabadan, who had written it in the first decade of the seventeenth century. It was partly based on the work of the thirteenth-century muḥaddith, Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad al-Bakrī and infused with Sufi imagery. The First World War career of R.H. Brand, 1st Baron Brand of Eydon, provides an important insight into a number of issues. An important financier (with Lazard Brothers) and an ardent Imperialist (a founding member of The Round Table), in 1915 Brand helped establish the Imperial Munitions Board (IMB), the Canadian branch of the Ministry of Munitions. After that time, until 1917, Brand served as the Representative of the IMB in London, acting as the key link between that body and the Ministry of Munitions. As such, he was at the centre of intra-Imperial relations and wartime finance and supply. In addition, Brand’s work involved him in Anglo-American relations, as Washington became an important aspect of finance and supply. Brand’s activities illuminate the difficulties involved in the attempt to coordinate the interests of Britain with the embryonic nationalist desires of Canada. They also underline the significance of the Dominion for the British war effort, both financially and in the production of munitions. In addition, Brand’s work makes evident the close ties between the Canadian war economy and the United States, making clear the need to look at both Ottawa and Washington when attempting to understand Britain’s North American economic and financial activities during the First World War. This paper offers a different approach to writing about oneself—Stanley Cavell's idea of philosophy as autobiography. In Cavell's understanding, the acknowledgement of the partiality of the self is an essential condition for achieving the universal. In the apparently paradoxical combination of the ‘philosophical’ (which is traditionally connected with a search for the objective and the universal) and the ‘autobiographical’ (which is conventionally associated with the subjective and the personal), Cavell shows us a way of focusing on the self and yet always transcending the self. The task requires, however, a reconstruction of the notions of philosophy and autobiography, and at the same time the destabilising of our conceptions of self and language. Cavell seeks to achieve this through the idea of finding one's voice, understood as an autobiographical exercise. This necessitates both negotiation of the inheritance from the past and innovation for the future, initiation into the language community and deviation from it. What this amounts to, in ways that the paper seeks to explain, is a process of the self and language in translation. This is a sense of ‘translation’ that is broader than the conventional understanding of the term. Such a conception can, it is argued, exercise a therapeutic effect on the self, destabilising the myth of self-identity. The article discusses English Reverend Richard Clarke (1723-1802), notable for his preaching in South Carolina in the 1750s. It is largely based upon information taken from the court records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, England regarding a probate case for the estate of haberdasher Kezia Sindram, the aunt of Clarke's fourth wife Sarah Lee, with additional information found in "The Papers of Henry Laurens," by British merchant and South Carolina politician Laurens. It discusses Clarke's career as an educator, writer, and minister; his family and relatives; and his associates.

Narrative literature is used to teach a variety of social work subjects; however, there are few studies that examine the impact on students. This article describes an assignment requiring the selection of a work of fiction or biography by undergraduate social work students enrolled in an interpersonal communication class at an Australian University. Books needed to contain a description of an individual whose life experiences were different from the student's. In an online learning group, students reflected on what they learned from the main character, on something they shared in common and whether they would look forward to serving the person if they met them in their professional social work roles. The author explores the historical source material that provided historian Sir Geoffrey Elton with his thesis regarding the modernization of the Tudor government during the monarchy of British King Henry VIII under the aegis of English statesman Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, based on his account in the 1953 book "The Tudor Revolution in Government" as well as his later writings. There is much to be gained from interpreting the tenth-century Exeter Book riddles as a characteristically biographical group of texts. They comprise a rich source of information for the study of Anglo-Saxon concepts of life courses and life stages, but have yet to be treated as such despite current enthusiasm surrounding the study of historical life cycles. Probably this is due to their status as biographies of largely non-human subjects. Equipped with the insights of life-writing scholarship, including Paul de Man's argument that all autobiography is prosopopoeia and personification, it becomes possible to see the riddles' value as discourses on life progression and indeed as early examples of life-writing and 'object biography' in the English vernacular. Building on a consideration of the riddles alongside their Latin analogues as well as influential contemporary schemes of the life course, this paper advocates the interrogation of such critical labels as 3'anthropomorphism' and 'personification', often applied to the riddles. After her depiction in Catullus 64, Ariadne became a model for the relicta , the abandoned woman. The tapestry that ornamented the wedding of Peleus and Thetis told exactly of her dismay and anger upon learning that Theseus left her. As far as the myth goes, following her abandonment, Dionysus took her as a wife. Modernist Brazilian author Hilda Hilst (1930–2004) revisits this portion of the tale in her cycle of ten poems Discontinuous and Remote Ode for Flute and Oboe. From Ariadne to Dionysus (1969). This introduces the poems as works of reception vis-à-vis the ancient figurations of Ariadne, as well as the context of Hilst's biography, it analyses them as reimaginations of the Roman elegy, and presents their first complete English translation, all original endeavours. On the surface, Hilst's Ariadne fashions herself as a learned poet who reads Catullus and rejoices in her abandonment. I argue that upon a closer look, however, this endlessly unrequited woman desires instead union and permanence. Hilst, herself an underappreciated and disreputable figure, unveils Ariadne's labyrinthic mind as she negotiates her devotion to poetry and her desire for the man she loves, revealing the afterlife of the myth of a heroine who found her own voice. This article seeks to record the various writings of A. J. A. Symons (1900–1941). While best known for his biography, The Quest for Corvo (1934) Symons wrote widely on biography and on bibliographical and bibliophilic matters. He also made many contributions to the various publications of the First Edition Club, of which he was Director. In addition, in his later years he wrote extensively on food and wine. The article details the legal problems encountered by African American foreign correspondent William Worthy when he traveled to Cuba from the United States and promptly returned using a birth certificate instead of a passport, in violation of the 1961 travel ban issued by the U.S. State Department and the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). As a reporter for the "Baltimore Afro-America" and an active member of the activist group Fair Play for Cuba Committee, it was reported the the U.S. government targeted Worthy for his public support of the administration of Cuban communist leader Fidel Castro.

When we consider classical receptions in terms of presences, we often think of how antiquity materializes visibly and/or substantially in the fabric of our histories, whether as physical remains or concrete traditions. Yet the search for the classical as a solid, conspicuous phenomenon reveals only one side of the fascinating story of how we can conceive its status and circulation across space and time. This article investigates some key examples across the period 1896–2017, from Argentine author J. L. Borges to British poet-translator Josephine Balmer, which disclose the flip side of this story—that of antiquity's existence on various levels of dispersal, silence, and occlusion at the intersections of poetry, mythopoeic biography, legend-making, and creative translation. It argues that, in their engagement with the Greco-Roman past, these examples both advance our understanding of absence as a critical idiom and question our sense of how antiquity makes its impact on our world as a 'classical presence'. The article discusses the attribution of a poem to Tudor woman author Margaret More Roper (1505-1544), daughter of English martyr Sir Thomas More. The poem appears in a manuscript at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and was attributed to Roper in an eighteen century miscellany by Elizabeth Bruce Boswell (1673-1734) as "Verses Writt by Sir Thomas Moore his Daughter when he was in prison, in Henry the 8s time." Biographical details are presented about Roper's education, writings, and her relationship with her father.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in the interaction between the urban milieu and the development of psychosis. While growing up in an urban environment constitutes a risk factor for developing psychosis, patients who develop a first episode of psychosis tend to avoid city centers and suffer from isolation. These observations have fostered emerging interest in ways of developing contexts in cities that are favorable to mental health and that may help service users in their paths to recovery. Building on work on place attachment as well as systemic therapy, we present a new approach to map the urban spaces experienced by service users. We propose two tools, the "place attachment diagram" and "life space network," to situate emotional bond and spatial dimension respectively at their center and help service users to map meaningful places in the city. We also suggest that different facets of the illness such as epidemiological risk factors (residential mobility, migration, urban living, trauma), early place attachment and abnormal space experience, may shape individual space and place experience in psychosis. Psychotherapeutic process with patients should aim at turning urban "spaces" into "places" characterized by a sense of familiarity, security and opportunity. In this paper we focus upon two collections of E. O. Hoppé's work from 1926, Picturesque Great Britain: The Architecture and the Landscape and London Types Taken from Life which we argue, register Hoé's ability to move across differing modes of photographic representation, and thus to respond effectively to contemporary market opportunities. We are concerned with how, in a British context, Hoppé was able to produce salable imaginary whilst seemingly aligning his work with other wider cultural forces. We argue that both London Types and Picturesque Great Britain are implicated within certain ideological tensions permeating British culture in the 1920s; the Hoppeé's work in these volumes is positioned within the realm of cultural problems as mush as that of aesthetic solutions. Seeking to elucidate the relation of imaginary and text, we discuss both works in terms of discourses circulating beyond the immediate spheres of photography and literature, situating London Types within contemporary ideologies of class, and Picturesque Great Britain within those of Englishness. Our subject, therefore, concerns a particular historical coincidence of culture, commerce and ideology within the problematics of an envisioned future and a mythic past. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a new knowledge-based approach for finding interesting semantic relations between resources in a knowledge graph (KG). The idea is to characterize the notion of 'interesting connection' in terms of generic ontological explanation patterns that are applied to an underlying linked data repository to instantiate connections. In this way, (1) semantically uninteresting connections can be ruled out effectively and (2) natural language explanations about the connections can be created for the end-user. The idea has been implemented and tested based on a KG of biographical data extracted from the life stories of 13,144 prominent historical persons in Finland, enriched by data linking to collection databases of museums, libraries, and archives. When Jephtha an Oratorio was published by John Walsh in April 1752, music allocated to the character Hamor was headed as sung by 'Mr. Brent'. William Barclay Squire began his Dictionary of national biography entry (1885) on the soprano Charlotte Brent by stating that she was the daughter of 'a fencing-master and alto singer, who sang in Handel's "Jephtha" in 1752', and this has been generally accepted. Charlotte's father, Charles, was a leading fencing-master, but he was in his late 50s at the time of the Jephtha premiere and his only known 'musical' appearance was as the player of the salt-box in a burlesque ode at his daughter's benefit at Ranelagh in 1763. Handel began composing the oratorio expecting that the alto castrato Gaetano Guadagni would create the role of Hamor, but when the premiere took place in February 1752 Guadagni was unavailable. For the revival of the oratorio in 1758 Hamor was sung by the 17-year-old Isabella Young, who probably also took the role in 1756. No male singer called Brent is recorded in concerts or on the London stage, so it is extremely likely that the singer at the premiere of the oratorio was the young Charlotte Brent. While generational and biographical approaches are well-established methods in historical scholarship, life-course approaches are less prominent. This article seeks to bridge that gap by applying all these methods to an examination of the early membership of the German labour movement in the 1860s and 1870s. It considers whether we can interpret the rise of the labour movement in the nineteenth century as a generational phenomenon and explain it in light of (work) experiences that were life-phase specific. We see that while life-course experiences were more decisive than generational factors for the making of the movement, the retrospective identification of a founding generation was significant for the creation of the identity of a united labour movement in the years of the Kaiserreich. On 4 June 1737, the celebrated artist Francois Lemoyne, first painter to king Louis XX committed suicide by violently stabbing himself to death with his sword. This article offers a forensically inspired art-historical narrative about a crime that took place three centuries ago. Using police records, medical reports, property inventories, eyewitness accounts, and the archives of the Academic Royale, this study pieces together the intriguing tale of Lemoyne's suicide, examining what drove him to such tragic extremes, and resolving the mystery of how he committed his bloody act. But even more fascinating than the story of Lemoyne's death is what the evidence uncovers about the ordinary details of Lemoyne's life, offering glimpses into private spaces, habitual routines, personal relationships, and professional ambitions. Showing how an investigation of Lemoyne's death reveals more than we might expect about the wider art world of eighteenth-century Paris, this article re-evaluates our art-historical aversion to biography. Borrowing methods from historical writing as well as looking for a distinctly art-historical approach, this article makes a case for the potential of microbiographical and object-driven modes of life-writing in social histories of art. The miraculous legend of the ninth-century poet Āṇṭāḷ’s love affair and eventual marriage to Viṣṇu of Srirangam is first recounted in the 13th-century Śrīvaiṣṇava Maṇipravāḷa hagiography, the Guruparamparaprabhāvam 6000 attributed to Piṉaḻakiya Perumāḷ Jīyar. Some three centuries later, Garuḍavāhana Paṇḍita of Srirangam elaborated on these brief biographical sketches of the āḻvārs in his Divyasūricaritam, a Sanskrit kāvya-hagiography. The five Sargas devoted exclusively to describing the birth, childhood, life, and marriage of Āṇṭāḷ depart radically from the concise narrative of its Maṇipravāḷa predecessor. In this article, I analyse the Divyasūricaritam’s Āṇṭāḷ story to argue that the text’s many inventions and elaborations encode articulations of Āṇṭāḷ’s place as a poet-saint-goddess within emerging Śrīvaiṣṇavism, particularly as it pertains to the female devotee’s ability to secure liberation for herself as well as for others.
